THE PARADE ROUTE The annual Broad Ripple High School homecoming parade will pass through the Village on Friday, September 21. The parade will leave the high school from the south exit at 3 P.M. Students have made floats for classes and clubs, and the marching band will perform. The parade stops briefly in front of 10-01 Food & Drink so that the band can play for the BRHS faculty that packs the outdoor deck. The Rockets will play Northwest in the homecoming football game at 7 P.M. The BRHS Alumni Association will be at the game and welcomes all alumni to come to the parade and the game to celebrate BRHS.

He would come home every night and find out what his stock prices were doing. Like Chris, I’ve always had an acclimation to it and I’ve always been aware of investments and their importance. As opposed to families who didn’t have an experience with investments, investments were always a background assumption for us. It was a business that we felt qualified to engage in, that gave us the ability to be independent, and in which independence is a virtue." A former Air Force intelligence officer, Douglas followed in family footsteps of business ownership. “My education had a strong finance-related component to it at the Wharton School, but when I first returned to Indiana, it was with an eye towards manufacturing. I represented an Indiana manufacturer in Asia, then I ran a small manufacturer which I attempted unsuccessfully image courtesy Douglas & Gray to buy. They graduated from North Central High School, but took separate paths to college. Douglas earned his Bachelor’s degree from Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, and an MBA from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Gray graduated from Northwestern University and also received a PhD from Princeton University in German Literature and Philosophy. “We fell out of contact and then resumed contact when I moved back in 2000. I worked on Wall Street from the fall of 1994 to the fall of 1999,” Gray mentioned. Earning a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1998, he was an international equities analyst with Dean Witter, Deutesche Morgan Grenfell, and Dresdner Kleinwort Benson. Douglas’ fluency in Mandarin Chinese began at an early age. “I decided to study Chinese at North Central when Deng Xiao Ping was Premier. I was about to go Princeton on an Air Force scholarship and thought if I studied Chinese, it would put me into a more interesting role in the Air Force. They gave me a scholarship for it..... then sent me to Alaska! Once out of business school, I traveled to China in the 1990s giving seminars in Chinese on the installation of electric motors made here in Indiana." A shared interest in investing was a catalyst in starting their investment advisory firm. Their staff includes investment advisor Doris J. Roberts, account administrator Misty Carmen and financial analyst Brian Rykovich. “I think that one thing that has contributed to this partnership is that we have the same sense of roots and ethics, and the same belief that we’re going to be here for a very long time to come. We don’t ever want to have a client wonder why we did something. Tom and I have complimentary styles. Gray noted a quote from the late economist John Maynard Keynes: “Markets can remain irrational longer than you can remain solvent.” "What inspired us to become independent a decade ago was a desire to avoid a lot of the conflicts of interest that we saw in the industry," said Douglas. We wanted to be fee-based, with a fiduciary responsibility to our clients rather than to any institution. I think that independence has served us well through the past decade. The value we add is to be able to think skeptically about the markets. There’s so much information out there. We're able to follow the theories and the trends, the competing and often differing opinions, in a way that our clients are not able to. It’s not that our clients couldn’t do this work, but they’ve got their own businesses to run. It’s tough to stay on top of it. We try to do that, but with humility. Studies show that the trait bad

Douglas described their financial services: “Our core strength is certainly assets and investment management, managing portfolios for households, an institution or two, and trusts. We do financial planning and provide insurance on an asneeded basis. We primarily use Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) to construct investor portfolios. There are times when it is appropriate to index and then times when an actively managed fund will get the job done better. Our fees start off at one percent and go down from there. When we first meet our clients, it is a bonding experience. We get to know their lives thoroughly, and learn what they want to accomplish in life, because money is a means to an end. "People shouldn’t be intimated by us. We’re members of the community,” Douglas emphasized. "And it's important work. We know we have clients' lives in our hands here. Douglas reflected on the domestic and international economy: “Europe is in recession and showing no signs of resolving its challenges. It's creating a drag not just for the U.S., but as significantly, for nations like China which have contributed so much to world growth themselves. So we have problems reverberating all across the globe, and in combination with our own political dysfunction. Under the circumstances, we, like most, anticipate relatively slow growth ahead, with a lot of volatility. From a long-term perspective, large company stocks appear to be reasonably valued provided that current earnings levels can be maintained. From a short-term perspective, there are several reasons to be concerned. A lot rides on what comes out of Washington." "We are cautiously optimistic,” Gray said. “Companies are looking at many hurdles out there; that’s why they’re sitting on hordes of cash.” Douglas added, "They’re also wondering where demand is going to come from.” "The Vanguard image of a sailing ship is apt for this business," Douglas observed. "We have winds and currents that shift. Seas that get rough. We’re constantly scanning the horizon for the next gust, the next calm, the next storm, and thinking how to adjust the sails to get our clients through as successfully as possible." Winners Named for 2012 Indiana Authors Award
Indianapolis author John Green is the National Author winner for the 4th annual Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Award, a program of The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation that recognizes the contributions of Indiana authors to the literary landscape in Indiana and across the nation. The New York Times bestselling young adult author was named by a nine-member statewide panel following a six-week nomination period. Green’s works, which include The Fault in Our Stars; Looking for Alaska; An Abundance of Katherines; and Paper Towns, have earned numerous awards, such as the Chicago Tribune Young Adult Fiction prize, the Michael L. Printz Award and the Edgar Award. The National Author award carries a $10,000 prize along with a $2,500 grant to a public library of the author’s choosing. It is given to a writer with Indiana ties, but whose work is known throughout the country. Past winners include Margaret McMullan (2011), Scott Russell Sanders (2010) and James Alexander Thom (2009). In addition to the National Author winner, Indianapolis author and current executive director of the Writers’ Center of Indiana Barbara Shoup has been named winner of the Regional Author award, presented to a writer who is well-known and respected throughout Indiana. Shoup will receive a $7,500 prize as well as a $2,500 grant designated to a public library of her choice. Shoup has authored numerous novels for adults and young adults, in addition to short fiction, poetry, essays and interviews. Her seventh novel, An American Tune, will be published in September. For the first time, a Lifetime Achievement award has been given to local author Dan Wakefield, whose bestselling novels Going All the Way and Starting Over were produced as feature films. Among his many works, he is the creator of the prime time television series, “James at Fifteen.” His memoir, Returning: A Spiritual Journey, was called by Bill Moyers “one of the most important memoirs of the spirit I have read.” Wakefield also will receive a $2,500 grant to designate to a public library. Also, finalists have been announced for the Emerging Author award, presented to a writer who has published no more than two books in his or her lifetime and within the last 10 years. The recipient also will receive a $2,500 grant designated to a public library. This year’s finalists are Christopher Coake, Sherri Wood Emmons and Douglas Light. Winners will be honored at the Indiana Authors Award dinner on Saturday, September 29 at Central Library in downtown Indianapolis, where Green will be the keynote speaker. Be a part of a very special tradition – 50 years in the making! It’s time for Indy’s own renowned holiday auditions. Quality Connection, IBEW 481, RTV-6 and Indianapolis Downtown, Inc. are seeking entertainers to perform at the 50th anniversary of the Circle of Lights® presented by the Contractors of Quality Connection and Electrical Workers of IBEW 481 on Friday, Nov. 23. Selected finalists from first auditions will be called back for a final audition. With more than 100 acts auditioning each year, a second audition allows judges to focus on the top acts and then select the finalists to perform in the live show. The chosen acts will have the opportunity to share the stage with Indianapolis native Angela Brown, renowned opera star and co-host of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s Duke Energy Yuletide Celebration. Audition details: First auditions will take place Tuesday, Sept. 25 and Saturday, Sept. 29 at the following locations: Tuesday, Sept. 25 from 4 – 8 p.m. IBEW Local 481 Hall, 1828 North Meridian St., and Saturday, Sept. 29 from 9 a.m. - noon Electrical Training Institute, 1751 S. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. Rocky Ripple Community 13th annual Art Festival
For 13 years, the Rocky Ripple Community Association has organized a free family-oriented music and art festival that has steadily grown in size and popularity. This year’s Rocky Ripple Festival will be held Saturday, September 29, from 11 to 6. “We have a great committee of volunteers who help make the Festival successful. Many of them have been part of the Festival organization since the beginning,” said Festival chair, Dhyana Raynor. “Rocky Ripple is such a great place to live, in part because of our parks and green spaces. The money we raise from this Festival supports our Community Association’s Parks Endowment Fund,” Raynor continued. The Festival is in the middle of the Town of Rocky Ripple, in Hohlt Park—which was donated to the Town by Mabel Hohlt over a decade ago. Mrs. Hohlt, who will be celebrating her 95th birthday in October, plans to attend this year’s event along with her daughter, son and grandson. It will be the second time that three generations of Hohlts will be at the park and festival at the same time. What attracts so many people to the Festival each year—besides the free admission—is the live music and expansive artists’ area (over seventy-five booths in 2011). Rocky Ripple resident Steve Hurt has lined up six bands: Andra Faye and the Rays, The Cosmic Preachers featuring Cathy Hurt, Seismic Souls, CW and the Working Class Trio, HyRyder, and Hurt’s band, Day Job Blues. Judy Hannah and the Midwest BellyDancing Superstars will be part of the entertainment throughout the day. Last year Steve Hurt said that it was the first time he had ever seen “belly dancers do a Cancan to Blues music. Only in Rocky Ripple!” The children’s activity area, directed by Kate Bullis, is fast becoming one of the largest family draws of any Indianapolis festival. This year her “Children at Play” area will feature a non-competitive sand sculpture event, hula hooping, bubble bonanza, an art station, face painting, and hair spraying. Mad Science returns to the festival, delivering “unique, hands-on science experiences for children that are as entertaining as they are educational”.

The Rocky Ripple Bat House Project is in its second year. Lowe’s Home Improvement on North Keystone Ave. has again donated building material and a group of RR residents held a “bat house raising construction party”. Six Rocky Ripple artists are decorating one or two bat houses each that will be offered at the festival silent auction. Please stop by to see at the Rocky Ripple Community Association booth. Fall is such a beautiful time of the year in Broad Ripple. The trees lining College Avenue display a glimpse of God’s art. I love Fall, yet dread the coming Winter. Since becoming bipolar I have struggled through Winter. The trees rustle and shed their wonderfully clad leaves. As Fall approaches I lament my losses and brace my self for another Winter which will assuredly bring hopelessness. Then a ray of light will break through my veil and Spring will come forth and I will be reborn again.

Local Poet Is An Inspiration To Many by Alan Hague
When I first met C.W. Pruitt at CATH Inc., he showed me the laminated poetry cards that he sold in the coffee shop. They were very cool - inspirational, colorful, and collectable. I sensed that this was someone special to Broad Ripple. CW was born in Grayson, Kentucky. His mother was an English teacher when he was young. CW recalls, “She encouraged us to use the English language creatively and correctly.” CW moved to Indianapolis during high school. He studied psychology at Ball State University, and was the president of the psychology honor society there. During his leadership the membership tripled. He graduated cum laude and went on to study for a masters degree in psychological intelligence testing. It was during grad school that CW became enamored with poetry. “I was searching my soul, trying to find my place,” said CW. “I saw Maya Angelou on television at the Clinton inauguration reading her poem, On The Pulse Of The Morning. I was transfixed. That night I started writing poetry while trying to finish my masters degree.” Later, CW was writing poetry and working as a crisis counselor downtown on the overnight shift. “On June 2, 1998, the poem Jesus In The Ghetto came to me in one second,” said CW. “I typed it out and it came to me. I laminated 144 copies of it and distributed them at 54th and College. It was very well received.” Since then, CW has had five trips to psychiatric hospitals to treat manic depression. It was during one of those hospital stays that he found a true friend in the reverend Richard Jones. “Richard visited me every day at the hospital,” recalled CW. “We now collaborate on the poetry. He keeps me centered.” CW is now sober, after a struggle with drugs and alcohol. “It is paradoxical,” said Richard. “The man who used to counsel people in addictions became a counselor in crisis.” Until it closed, CATH Inc. was where CW sold his laminated poetry. It was Richard’s idea to make the cards the same size as credit cards to easily fit in a wallet. Richard also designs and creates the artwork for each poem. The production process results in a dimensional look and feel to the cards. “Many times some one will come up to me and take one of my poetry cards out of their wallet,” said CW. “They say ‘I have carried this with me for six years’. That is a good feeling. It’s all about love.” When CATH Inc. closed, manager Nora Spitznogle carried the small easel holding the laminated cards across the street to Northside News. “It’s your turn now,” she said. CW’s poetry cards are now for sale at Northside News, 5408 North College Avenue. We will hear more from CW soon. We expect him to become a regular contributor to the Broad Ripple Gazette. We both have the same mission - It’s All About Love.

I’ve seen many events that tout themselves as an interactive art and music event, but Oranje means it. In fact it can be called an art and music explosion. This is the tenth year for Oranje and it keeps getting bigger and better, while staying fresh and contemporary. The venue changes every year, often held in empty buildings, and always some place that you might not get to see otherwise. This year’s extravaganza features over twenty artists and over twenty musical acts and DJs. There is truly something for everyone. And it is fun people watching, this is the night to see and be seen each year and the audience dresses accordingly. Some details: Parking is $5 at the Fairgrounds, but in my experience it’s a good night to plan ahead for a cab. Most artists will be selling their art, so plan your cash accordingly. The bars will also accept credit cards, and there will be ATMs onsite. Bring your ID, even folks in my age range get carded. Most of all – have a blast!

Celebration of Jane Sunday, September 23 The Jazz Kitchen - 5377 N. College Avenue - 3-7 pm
Jane Rulon was fabulous. Truly and genuinely fabulous. In the fifteen years or so that I had the honor of knowing her, my family always referred to her as “Fabulous Jane.” She had that certain flair that is hard to describe, but you know when someone has it. I was shocked when I found photos of her that she was not wearing a scarf. In my mind she always had one draped around her beautiful neck. I even imagined her at home with stylish silk scarf over her bathrobe. She wore her gorgeous grey hair with aplomb, making me wish that I had enough
nerve to do the same. All of her accessories had a lovely story. One of my favorite pieces was the glass ring that she purchased in France. She could make something funky sparkle. Jane was a familiar face at art, film, and music events. She and I had the same habit of dropping in on multiple events in the same evening. I was delighted when I’d see her twice in one night without making a plan. She was a marvelous conversationalist, I loved looking over at parties and seeing her deep in conversation with one of my siblings or neighbors. She made everyone feel special. Jane made everything seem like an event, whether she was popping in to my yard sale, celebrating a birthday, or bumping into her at the State Fair. She was a thoughtful gift giver and occasion-maker. When CATH coffeehouse closed, a group of regular customers put together a lovely celebration. Others provided the cake and food and keg. Jane arranged with the Mayor’s Office to decree it CATH Day and listed all of the things the coffeehouse added to the community, which helped soften the blow of the café closing. She made a fabulous toast at my fortieth birthday, and I was thrilled to celebrate my fiftieth with her. One of my favorite moments of that party was running into Jane and some other women in the washroom and having a great conversation. In case you’ve ever wondered what the inside of the ladies room at the Jazz Kitchen looks like, this photo was snapped there. She once gave me a gorgeous photo by Ann Cothron Jamie Ridpath, Nora Spitznogle, Jane Rulon paper crown made of sheet music and glitter labeled Queen Bee, just because it reminded her of me. Fabulous Jane died August 22, after a short illness. Her friends and family are hosting a Celebration of Jane at the Jazz Kitchen on Sunday, September 23. BRHS Alumni celebrate Poston's life Gene R. Poston, former Broad Ripple High School choral conductor, passed away August 12, 2012 at age 82. He was a graduate of Arsenal Technical High School and Indiana University. "Mr. P.," as students called him, began his teaching career in the early 1950's at Shortridge High School and joined the faculty at Broad Ripple in 1954. In 1960 he was appointed Chairman of the Music Department and Director of Productions. He retired from Board Ripple in 1980, and in 2007 the auditorium at the school was named the Gene R. Poston Auditorium. That same year the Gene R. Poston Legacy Foundation was established to enhance music education and commemorate his impact on his students' lives. Gene was and active participant in numerous local and statewide musical organizations and was named a Distinguished Hoosier by Governor Daniels. A memorial service was held September 2, 2012, at which several Golden Singer alumni and the Gene Poston from the 1964 yearbook. current Broad Ripple Wind Ensemble performed. BR Kiwanis hits 25 year mark By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com I met with past-presidents of the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club, Susan Neal and Chris Carlson, at the Pawn Shop Pub for lunch. The occasion was the 25th anniversary of the Broad Ripple Kiwanis. It was also 25 years ago when the Supreme Court ruled that service clubs must allow women as members. In 1987 Broad Ripple Kiwanis was one of the first clubs in the nation to start with women members. The Kiwanis Club at the Pyramids sponsored the new Broad Ripple club. Two of the charter members of that original Broad Ripple group are still members today - Susan Neal and Tom Bardach [of Bardach Awards, a long-time business once at the corner of Broad Ripple Avenue and Guilford]. Broad Ripple Kiwanis met at the Kennington Legion Post at 65th and Westfield Boulevard for many years. Don Glenn, the principal of Broad Ripple High School at that time, was the first president. Around 1999 the club moved to Calvin Hall at Northminster Presbyterian Church at 1660 Kessler Boulevard. Broad Ripple Kiwanis have been meeting at Binkley's, on the corner of Kessler and College, for the last six years. "Kiwanis is all about service," explained Susan Neal, "Community service. And Kiwanis International's primary focus is helping the children of the world." "Our club focus is the children in the area we serve, the Broad Ripple area," added Chris Carlson. One of the first fund raising events for the club was the Duckling Dash, chaired by Tom Bardach. The Dash was held for ten years and raised $10,000 each year. Broad Ripple Kiwanis sponsored newspaper recycling bins at Broad Ripple Park "before recycling was cool," said Neal. Currently, the bin behind Einstein Bros Bagels at Broad Ripple Avenue and Compton supports Broad Ripple Kiwanis. An upcoming fund-raising event is Pints for Half-Pints to be held at Bier Brewery, 6133 E. 65th Street, on October 6, from 6 to 10pm. (details in the next Gazette) Fund-raising allows the club to help local children, such as with the Dr. Lew Robbins Scholarships given out to two students at Broad Ripple High School each year. The club sponsors Broad Ripple Haverford Little League. They also partner with School 55 to help students with assignment notebooks and Science Fair supplies. All the projects to help children are far too numerous to list here. Kiwanis is for anyone who wants to do community service and meet people in the area. Many lasting friendships are made. Meetings are at Binkley's every Tuesday for lunch, and feature a guest speaker. Details can always be found in the Gazette on page 3. The meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to drop in for lunch to hear a speaker or to just meet a new friend.

BRVA Land Use & Development Aug. meeting By Martin Chittum
martin@broadripplegazette.com The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee held a meeting on August 28 at the Broad Ripple United Methodist Church. The meeting was called to order shortly after 6pm. The first petitioner was Mr. Thomas Vander Luitgaren, representing Dr. Gary Halberstadt, for the property at 6527 Carrollton Avenue. The property is currently vacant and contains two rental dwellings. Dr. Halberstadt plans to convert the building at the front of the property into a medical office for his pediatric practice. The building at the rear of the property will remain a rental. He requires approval of variances of both use and dimension to allow him to close on the purchase agreement on the property. The rear dwelling is currently in violation of the zoning ordinance for the required distance of setback from the right-of-way of Coil Street. The building, known locally as the Grist Mill (although historic research shows that this structure was not the grist mill, but instead a garage with a 2nd floor added in the 20's), was placed at that location many years before the ordinance was in effect. The city is requiring that the parking area be moved from the Carrollton side of the property to the side bordering Coil. To accommodate the number of spaces desired, the plan is to remove part of the privacy fence in front of the rear dwelling and extend the existing parking area east. This is the point where the Committee began to show its collective concerns. There are several trees and landscaping elements along the Coil side of the property that they would not like to see removed. There is also a utility pole which may need to be relocated or worked around. Instead of allowing pull-in parking from Coil, they would prefer that a sidewalk be put in along the Carrollton side with a driveway leading to the parking area from Carrollton. They would also prefer some kind of landscaping element along the southern perimeter to act as a buffer and screen the parking area from Coil. The intent is to preserve the “quaint” alleyway appearance of Coil Street. Mr. Luitgaren agreed that these are points on which Dr. Halberstadt would be willing to work with the Committee. Because of the upcoming deadlines, the Committee asked for a 30-day continuance to give them time to work with Dr. Halberstadt to come up with a good compromise that everyone could be happy with. Unfortunately, the purchase agreement expires before that and Mr. Luitgaren couldn't represent that Dr. Halberstadt would agree to a continuance, especially in light of the fact that the time had already been extended once before. After some discussion and working up a rough sketch of what they would like to see, they agreed to communicate their recommendations to the City Staff the next day in an effort to get the situation worked out before the deadline of September 4th. The next petitioner was David Gilman, on behalf of David DuBow, part-owner of Broad Ripple Ice Cream Station (BRICS). They plan to expand their outdoor patio deck to increase the total number of seats to 78. According to city ordinance, this would require 24 parking spaces. They currently have 9, and those are considered substandard due to the way cars are required to maneuver into the right-of-way of Cornell Avenue, so the city counts them as having zero spaces. This variance would allow for them to expand their seating as planned without any additional parking. And, unlike most restaurants, due to the nature of the refreshment served there, the majority of customers have a short stay. He is certain that the increased seating capacity wouldn't cause any additional strain on the parking situation. There was some discussion of the spaces nearby designated as public parking. These spaces are controlled by the Indy Parks and several Village businesses claim to be renting the spaces. Of these, 5 are designated as parking for BRICS and are included in their lease with the Indy Parks. Given the lack of evidence as to which other businesses have rights to spaces, the exact number of public spaces available was unable to be determined. Mr. DuBow assured the Committee that existing landscaping in the area to be developed will be moved and/or reused, and the overall standards of appearance will be maintained. After this,

the Committee affirmed their trust in his judgment and moved to support the recommendation for the variance. The motion passed unanimously. Following this, Committee member Tom Healy gave an update on the Envision Broad Ripple project he's been a part of. After four years of working on it, they are finally ready for their first public meeting to present the final plan. The meeting will be held on September 24 at 6:30pm at the Indianapolis Art Center. After this, it can go to the Metropolitan Development Commission, who will then make their recommendation to the City-County Council. After their committee debates it, the proposal will go back to the MDC. There will be opportunities for public input at each stage of the project. This project will present the “Master Plan” for the path the BRVA wants any future development in the Village to follow. The Committee members are very excited to see this finally coming together. Next, was discussion of the plans Lor Corporation has for its property at Broad Ripple Station. They are planning on installing a new sign, and there is an issue both with the BRVA and the City regarding it. Lor Corp. plans to include an electronic message screen as a part of the sign, and there is an ordinance against it in this neighborhood. Both the BRVA and City Staff do not want to allow a variance for this because not only do they find it aesthetically displeasing, they also do not want to set a precedent for other neighborhoods that have similar ordinances against such signs. Other than the electronic portion, the Committee found the general designs presented to be attractive. Finally, there was a discussion of the flood wall project and the levees that are being constructed to mitigate flooding in the neighborhood. Until the levee project is complete, Broad Ripple is considered to be in a flood plain, and therefore, any new construction projects must be built to those standards. There was discussion back and forth regarding the details of the levee designs. After agreeing that this is a contentious issue that will no doubt continue to be debated by all affected parties for quite some time into the future, they called for the meeting to be adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for September 25, 6:00pm, at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church.

FOR FOUR YEARS IN THE LATE EIGHTEEN NINETIES THE POST OFFICE KNEW BROAD RIPPLE AS JUST “RIPPLE”.
Don't Crash and BURN! Chances are, you are either do or see what I see on a daily basis: Large quantities of people clutching their energy drinks with no hesitation of any negative side effects or adverse reactions. The energy drink industry has risen to multi-million dollar status and it is no wonder. Millions of Americans, whether it be cramming college students, overworked employees, under-slept mommies, or just the average Joes who have become reliant on them during the mid-day slump, pay a good chunk of money on these caffeine power-charged beverages. And it isn't surprising since their savvy marketing techniques with promise of long lasting energy with no "crash" and many with added botanical extracts make them look quite attractive in our sleep deprived and energy sapping society. In fact, energy drinks are among the fastest-growing products in the beverage sector. U.S. retail sales of the drinks rose 16% last year to $8.9 billion, accounting for 12% of the carbonated-soft-drink category. And what's concerning about this fact; the drinks are regulated more loosely than traditional sodas such as colas. Certain ingredients such as botanical extracts are being added to beverages and foods beyond their traditional use, which raises questions about safety. Recent research in Australia has highlighted the risks with over-consumption of energy drinks. Listed in order of most common to least common. Palpitations / tachycardia Tremor / shaking Agitation / restlessness Gastrointestinal upset Chest pain / ischemia
Dizziness / syncope Tingling or numbing of the skin Insomnia Respiratory distress Headache
In my opinion, there are several red flags in regard to how energy drinks are regulated and perceived by the general population. First, the FDA doesn't define the term "energy drink" by any regulation, due to the widely varying ingredients. Pretty disturbing given the massive consumption of these products. Another shocking fact: The products' labels often don't say how much caffeine is contained in the drink. The label on Monster's 16-ounce can says it contains caffeine but doesn't say how much; 5-hour Energy doesn't say how much caffeine is contained in one bottle, but its website says it is about as much as a cup of coffee. I'm not sure how much I believe this one unless it is a 44 oz. cup!! What's more, the marketing is clearly directed more to a younger target market, and this age group may not be concerned with the high levels of caffeine and the habit forming tendencies of these products. Also, there have been several instances of college students mixing energy drinks with alcohol, cancelling the depressant effect of alcohol resulting in binge drinking. Some countries have taken notice; Australia, France and Denmark, for example have banned their sale, and a warning label was placed by the UK after finding it unsafe for children under the age of 18 due to the increase in blood stimulation and heart rate increases of the products. I am not necessarily stating that all energy drinks be banned. I do feel that the FDA needs to step in to require labeling, and regulate and cap the amount of caffeine in the beverages and the use of "exotic" chemicals. Although it may not remedy some of the problems, yet at the least give the consumer the right to know and the responsibility to choose how much of the substances they consume. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Wanna’ Dance? As lively as Broad Ripple is at night, I can’t help but think more options for dancing would be a wonderful addition. Moving to the groove appeals to all generations. I learned this early on in hearing my mother reminisce, “When I was a young girl (in the early ‘30s), I would dance away the evenings. We danced with everyone, and then capped off the evening with a nickel coke and conversation. A special place we went to was on the river in Broad Ripple. They had a great dance hall on the river’s edge!” She encouraged my dancing feet with early lessons with Miss Poston at Jordon College of Music. Donning black leotard, pink practice tutu, and ballet slippers, my schoolmates and I learned the elements of ballet. Lessons culminated in a yearly dance recital at Shortridge’s Caleb Mills Hall. Oh my, other than Halloween, that was my most glamorous brush with fashion. The costumes were beautiful. There was even a trip to a seamstress for a fitting with netting and satin. My dancing girl friends and I spent hours practicing with theatrical makeup. Getting dolled up and performing on stage was a big deal. I continued dancing in junior high and high school, but not ballet or tap. I was privileged to go to Mrs. Gate’s Cotillion. We met at the Riviera Club and later in Nora. Pretty dresses, gloves, and age-appropriate patent leather shoes made evenings of dancing with boys a bit more enticing. These occasions were often awkward. Gliding around the dance floor with one of the dance school assistants was always the preference to partnering with the boy who was too small for his suit and glasses. We learned the Foxtrot, Lindy, Cha Cha, and Waltz. All the while, Mrs. Gates was a stickler for manners and proper social protocol on the dance floor, continually coaching us on the fine points of etiquette. The best dances of the ballroom lessons were the Father-Daughter dances held each year. I loved the new dress and the opportunity to dance with my father. He had been a football player and was imposing on the dance floor. He was a good dancer thanks to my mother’s love of dance. Later dads were replaced by dates and dancing classes were replaced by proms. Although one time there was an Arthur Murray’s in Broad Ripple, I don’t remember dance being a Broad Ripple attraction in my era. There were great times dancing to recordings by Donna Summers, Bee Gees, ABBA, Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Barry White among others. Take note there is the Vogue, the place for dancing on Wednesdays (Retro Rewind) and Saturdays. Their in-house DJ spins songs from bygone eras and does provide a chance to trip the light fantastic. The bar scene and dining experiences are going strong in Broad Ripple, I have to believe visitors to the Village like to dance and might well enjoy additional opportunities for this great way to mix mingling exercise. A street dance, a dance hall, or more clubs with a dance floor would let the joy of dancing enliven the Village. Who’s up for the challenge? Marigold Celebrates 23 Years in Village Marigold Contemporary Clothing is noting its 23rd birthday this month by giving gifts to others. Marigold, located at 6512 North Cornell Avenue, is known for upbeat and lively fashions, and also for its commitment to Broad Ripple Village and the community. Owner Linda Shikany is an active member of the Broad Ripple Village Association, and is also involved in Midtown Loves Local initiatives, promoting both local businesses and the neighborhoods of Indy’s northside. “Part of our mission statement is that you have to become involved in the community you’re in,” explained Linda. “Second Helpings is an amazing organization, one that we’re always happy to help.” To celebrate the birthday and benefit the community, Marigold is now holding a food drive for Second Helpings. This not-for-profit organization “rescues” unused food from restaurants and transforms it into fresh, healthy meals for the needy. In this process, Second Helpings literally goes through tons of rice and pasta each year. “Second Helpings is always in need of these items, especially spaghetti and elbow macaroni,” commented Elizabeth Shikany, store manager. This is where the Marigold food drive comes in. Here is how it works. From September 12 through 16, shoppers are encouraged to bring pasta or rice to the shop. For a five pound donation, the shopper will be entered in a drawing for prizes from Marigold. The number 23 is the theme: the goal of the pasta drive is to raise 1,230 pounds of food for Second Helpings (although Linda and Elizabeth are hoping for 2,300
