BRHS Class of 1952 Reunion

by Alice Roettger

A doctor/state legislator, an Appalachian troubadour(ess), a writer/ book publisher, another writer who counseled college applicants on the “admissions game,” teachers, an Air Force One pilot, a dairy owner, a restaurant owner and graduate of the Cordon Bleu, a journalist, an entertainer, an orthodontist, a flute player and teacher, a Ph.D . . . These Broad Ripple High School representatives of the “boring 50s”

recently gathered at the Riviera Club to celebrate their 60th high school reunion. Of the 205 remaining or locatable members of the original class of slightly more than 300, nearly 60 attended the two-day event. Travelers came from the four corners of the United States – Maine, Washington, California and Florida, as well as the Carolinas, Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska and Ohio.

Broad Ripple Music Fest - Over 100 bands

In This

By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com The sixth annual Broad Ripple Music Fest is Saturday, October 13th where historic Broad Ripple Village will be the setting for over 100+ musicians performing at a variety of venues, including dance clubs, neighborhood watering holes and also family and children's venues. Last year’s event comprised 15 locations ranging from 38th Street to 71st Street that featured over 125 bands. Attendance exceeded 3,500 and received local media coverage by WRTV, WXIN (Fox 59), WTTS and NUVO magazine. “Broad Ripple Music Fest is a celebration of local and regional music, with a dash of national thrown in, too. BRMF takes over Broad Ripple Village all day and puts on musical acts of many genres -- rock, electronic, hip-hop, world music and more. The festival works with venues and promoters to put on an epic amount of music in bars, parking lots and record stores alike. We'll feature over 100 acts on over 12 stages,” explained Jack Shepler, who was recently named BRMF’s new Director after previously working as a creative resource, showcase planner and marketing consultant. Well known in the music community for his involvement as an event producer as well as for DJing (as Jackola), the festival is excited about the promotion and looking at a prosperous future. Shepler described his background with the event: “I have been involved since the beginning, in 2007, while working at SmallBox in Broad Ripple. Jeb Banner, the CEO, decided instead of doing a usual Musical Family Tree showcase, we would put our heads together to come up with a new festival. I've been involved every year as a promoter. We have presented the electronic dance music showcase every year as well as a lot of the marketing, such as graphic design, website and social media. Seeing this festival grow into what it has become, I’m extremely excited and honored to take the reins as festival director. This year we plan to extend the festival’s reach while honing in on local music from all sides of the musical spectrum. This year's festival is entirely within walking distance, all within two blocks of Broad Ripple Avenue. With so much amazing rock, hip-

hop, jazz and electronic dance music right here in Indianapolis, the future of Broad Ripple Music Fest is looking bright!” Shepler noted. He mentioned some of the venues already scheduled: “The Alley Cat Lounge will feature music from the Joyful Noise recording label. Peppers downstairs will have electronic dance music while Peppers upstairs features rock music from The-Instore.com. Kilroy’s will have electronic dance music while a Girl’s Rock theme will be at Indy CD & Vinyl. There are two tents at Connor’s Pub that are sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon and Butler Scion that will feature indie rock. A new venue, Sabbatical (located at 921 Broad Ripple Avenue) will showcase rock music." Music at Rock Lobster is sponsored by NUVO, featuring Oranje & Cultural Cannibals stages with jam bands and world music. Za Pizzaria Upper Room will have a Musical Family Tree showcase featuring acoustic music. Kilroy’s tent, which is sponsored by Upland Brewing Company, will have electronic dance music. Further updated information on bands and ticket information can be found at www.broadripplemusicfest.com. BRMF is a unique annual event to hear a variety of bands in diverse musical categories playing in and around Broad Ripple Village.

Above: A great turnout made the American Legion Riders' "RIDE TO DEFEAT A.L.S." and Hog Roast a huge success Saturday, September 22nd at the Robert E. Kennington Post #34 in Broad Ripple. A little chilly but all in all the sunny day went very well. With a live band and fire pits to warm us, a good time was had by all in attendance for this very worthy cause.

The Warrior on Wheels bike ride was held on September 15. Below IMPD officers lined up on the Monon Trail for a group photo. Proceeds from the event supported the David Moore Foundation.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Pink Boyd Thursday, October 4 Corner Wine Bar Cellar, 6331 Guilford Ave 21+, 8:00, free (but bring some cash for the tip bucket)

I boldly declared on facebook a few months ago that I would be okay if I never heard any Pink Floyd again. I have a feeling that I’ll feel differently about Pink Boyd. This will be the band’s inaugural show, and I promise it will be memorable. Pink Boyd is made up four very talented folks; Andra Faye, Scott Ballantine, Jeff Ayers, and Gary Wasson. They will play Americana music; encompassing oldschool country, western and Pink Boyd folk music. I can’t wait.

Wanda Jackson Daneil Romano, Bigger Than Elvis Friday, October 5 Radio Radio, 1119 Prospect Street 21+, $20 advance (my guess is that it will sell out), 8:00 pm

I readily admit that I don’t have any game when it comes to rock and roll history. I pretty much went from zero to punk rock my freshman year in college. At last year’s Austin City Limits Festival I wound up in the photo pit of Wanda Jackson’s stage mostly by the circumstance of logistics. Photographers are only allowed to shoot the first three songs and there is a limited amount of time to scoot from stage to stage. I had my strategy mapped out, but I had just the right amount of time to swing by her stage if I hustled. I’m glad I did. I was immediately smitten. She was delightful and talented and had just the right amount of sass. I knew that I was in the presence of someone special. And shame on me for not doing my research before I saw her. I was so anxious to try to photograph the upand-comers that I almost missed one of the icons of early rock and roll. Wanda is responsible for a pretty big chunk of the history of rockabilly and country music

and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. And she dated Elvis Presley for goodness sake! Wanda’s musician father gave her a guitar in 1953, when she was six years old. By the time she was 15, she won a local talent contest and was given a daily show on KLPR radio station. The program lasted throughout Jackson's high school years. Jackson recorded several songs with the Brazos Valley Boys, including "You Can't Have My Love," a duet with Billy Gray. The song, on the Decca label, became a national hit, and Jackson's career was off and running. She had wanted to sign with Capitol, Thompson's label, but was turned down due to her young age, so she signed with Decca instead. She insisted on finishing high school before hitting the road. When she did, her father became her road manager. Her mother made and helped design Wanda's stage outfits. "I was the first one to put some glamour in the country music — fringe dresses, high heels, long earrings," Jackson said of these outfits. When Jackson first toured in 1955 and 1956, she was placed on photo by Nora Spitznogle a bill with none other than Wanda Jackson Elvis Presley. The two hit it off almost immediately. Jackson said it was Presley, along with her father, who encouraged her to sing rockabilly. Her recording career bounced back and forth between country and rockabilly; she did this by often putting one song in each style on either side of a single. Jackson cut the rockabilly hit "Fujiyama Mama" in 1958, which became a major success in Japan. Her version of "Let's Have a Party," which Elvis had cut earlier, was a U.S. Top 40 pop hit for her in 1960. Jackson's popularity continued through the end of the decade. Wanda toured regularly, was twice nominated for a Grammy, and was a big attraction in Las Vegas from the mid-'50s into the '70s. She married in 1961, and instead of quitting the business — as many women singers had done at the time — her husband gave up his job in order to manage his wife's career. In 1971, Jackson and her husband became Christians. She released one gospel album on Capitol in 1972, Praise the Lord, before shifting to the Myrrh label for three more gospel albums. In 1977, she switched again, this time to Word Records, and released another two. In the early '80s, Jackson was invited to Europe to play rockabilly and country

festivals and to record. She's since been back numerous times. In 1995, she was featured on a rockabilly album, Rockabilly Filly, which she toured to support. It was her first secular tour in the States since the '70s, not to mention her first time back in a nightclub atmosphere. After releasing the critically acclaimed, "Heart Trouble", and "I Remember Elvis," Wanda continues to tour all over the world. In 2009, not only was she induced in to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she started work on new recording with Jack White. The resulting album, The Party Ain't Over, was released in January, 2011. It included a cover of the Bob Dylan rockabilly song, "Thunder on the Mountain" as well as a fiery cover of Amy Winehouse's hit song "You Know I'm No Good". I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith Really, could anything be more fun than a beauty contest for Bulldogs? You’ll just have to go to find out. The contest is the 12th annual Butler University Bulldog Beauty Contest which is being held October 20th. I have written often about my attachment to Butler – my parents are alums. As the owner of City Dogs Grocery, we have the honor of being a sponsor of this terrific event. I have my dad’s corduroy Butler jacket framed and hanging in my store along with his fraternity paddle. His was the class of 1932. The whole back of the jacket is hand embroidered with a Bulldog. This is a family homecoming festivity open to the public, complete with a bouncy house for kids. The word has gotten out and more than 100 dogs show up for the judging in eight categories. Although we have been a sponsor, it often conflicts with our trade shows and vacations. The first time I went, I vowed not to miss it and indeed missed the trade show instead. It was a good call. Sign-in time was 9:45 A.M. so I got there a little early. Mom and Dad are no longer living but as I walked across that campus on that cool morning, let me tell you, they were there with me in spirit. I absolutely felt it. In life, they would have loved this. I arrived to a great set-up. There was a big skirted stage with a great backdrop including blue and white balloons. Tents were set up as were lots of bleachers for onlookers. Crisp white stanchions were in place to keep dogs in line. And dogs there were! They came as cowboys, Indians, princesses, angels, football players, you name it. You see, there was a “best dressed” category. The first category was “the cutest” and everyone thought their dog was so all Bulldogs participated (French, English and American). As they paraded across the stage the standouts were puppies. Who can compete against a puppy? And the winner was…..a sweet little puppy wearing Angel wings. Follow-up categories were Meanest Looking, Best Trick, Best Butler Spirit, Oldest, Youngest, Best Dressed and Best Wannabe. The winners of each of these categories went head-to-head for Best of Show. That was years ago and now every year the bar raises a little higher. No longer is there a “wannabe” category open to all dogs who want to be a Bulldog for the day. It has evolved to Bulldogs only because the number of entrants has grown annually and it needed to be fine tuned. This year, as of this writing, details are still forthcoming. Go to Butler’s website to see what categories there are and how to register. As a spectator, just show up. It is at 2:00 PM on October 20th and is a free, hysterically good time. You will laugh your head off. The get ups that these dogs come in are a riot. There are great prizes per winning category. Holistic Select Dog Food is the chief sponsor giving goodie bags to all who register and a year’s worth of dog food to the winner. This is the food Blue II and Blue III are eating. It is made in Mishawaka, Indiana. Speaking of Blue III (Trip, as he is referred to), is the new Butler mascot who was introduced on campus last February. He is the understudy, or intern, and will assume the full role when Blue II retires. At nine months old, he is now bigger than his boss. Butler’s Michael Kaltenmark has done an outstanding job with these dogs and has made fun in our community for all to enjoy. It’s always refreshing to have some good, fun news in our day and the media loves Butler. So do I. Pets make you smile and at this special, free event they make you outright laugh. Don’t miss it. Susan Smith is a life-long area resident and is the owner of City Dogs Grocery located at 52nd and College and at 884 Massachusetts Avenue. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the middle section of the top row which contains 3-4-5-8-9. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 5. The 7 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the space above 3-5. The only place left is above the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

A converted 19th Century house that rests alongside the Central Canal in Broad Ripple Village has been the heart of a healthy community spanning 4 decades. 1974 marked the first year that a man by the name of Bob Landman stepped into The Good Earth. Like many he came to the store as a shopper of alternative products. From Shopper he became an Employee and eventually, Owner. For the next 34 years "Sugarbob" Landman worked 7 days a week building a store that wasn't just Natural Food, but so much more! He Literally brought Organic Produce to Indianapolis driving to the airport to pickup Fresh Fruits & Veggies from California. Landman introduced Central Indiana first to Kalso Earth Shoes and next Birkenstock Sandals. Customers. Sugarbob would greet shoppers of his store with a wry smile and a new song everyday! There was never a dull moment at Good Earth. Sadly and quite unexpectedly Bob Landman passed away December 6, 2008. For the next week and month and even years to come, patrons of the Good Earth would stop in to pass along a song or a story about their friend, Sugarbob. The thread that connected each of these stories was the unabashed Joy of living each and every day to its fullest potential! This Joy was contagious and has filled Good Earth since his untimely departure. The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

"Zork and Fork" I love the Zork. It is hard to beat the genuine cork wine closure and the stelvin/ screwcap top is perfect for those who need instant gratification. But when it comes to style, ingenuity and eco-friendly-function, the Zork is my favorite bottle stopper. It looks like a Champagne cork with a twisted tail attached that wraps around the neck of the bottle. You unwrap, pop and serve. Unlike a champagne cork, the Zork can be used again on the same bottle or others. It's kind of like a Cracker Jack surprise for grownups - a bottle of wine to enjoy now and a handy tool to use later. The Other Guys wine group in Sonoma, California, vints and bottles a number of food- and consumer-friendly wine brands that use the Zork, including Moo Buzz, Plungerhead and Hey Mambo along with Leese-Fitch, Pennywise and White Knight wines. The Other Guys is the 4th generation of the Sebastiani wine family in action. In 1895, Samuele Sebastiani immigrated to California from Italy and started making wine. In 2010, August Sebastiani created "The Other Guys" wine group to continue the family tradition with the 21st Century motto of "laid back guys, stand out wines". I would agree. The Plungerhead Zinfandel with the ZORK closure is a big, rich, full-bodied. black fruited, spicy Old Vine red. The Hey Mambo wines (most Zork corked) offer up an offbeat collection of blends including the sleek smooth Syrah based "Sultry Red" and the not too sweet, not too dry, just right sassy "Swanky White". The Hey Mambo Kinky Pink is a dry rose style blend that offers up aromatic and appetizing notes of red fruit–strawberry, raspberry, cherry with a dry finish. The Other Guys wine operation is located at 35 Maple Street in Sonoma, California. The address gives name to TOG's latest endeavor, craft spirits. Uncle Val's Botanical Gin gets its name from Sebastiani Italian Uncle Zio Valerio who loved to grow and cook from his herb garden in Tuscany. TOG celebrates that passion in its Uncle Val's Botanical Gin which uses California spring water as a

base in which to steep or ferment what it calls "immersion bags" of aromatic garden herbs including juniper, cucumber, lemon, sage and lavender. The result is nose and mind blowing. One whiff and you are immediately transported to an modern day botanical garden. The gin smells so good you almost want to WEAR it as a perfume. Ok, maybe just a dab or two behind the ear but don't miss the chance to DRINK it. Subtle undertone of juniper wrapped delicately by the other aromatics creates one amazing gin. If any of these wines or spirits sound like something you'd like to taste then mark your calendars for Monday October 15. The OTG Midwest Regional Manager, Michael Kasper will be in Indianapolis to share the wines and spirits of The Other Guys. Here is a look at the menu:

Monon Trail construction public hearing By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) held a public hearing and open house on September 18 at the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI) at 77th and College Avenue. About 30 were in attendance. DPW presented the proposed construction project and time line to repair a section of the Monon Trail approximately half a mile long starting at 75th Street going north. This rehabilitation project will repair the drainage along the trail, add new guard rails, and resurface the trail. The estimated cost of $350,000. The project is expected to close that section of the trail for two to three weeks. A detour will be in place during that time. Public input is requested on the start date of the project and the detour route. The options for starting the project are fall or spring. Winter is not available because the paving work cannot be performed at that time. For more information you can email RebuildIndy@indy.gov, or visit www.indy. gov/RebuildIndy, or call (317) 327-2656.

EASY

by Laura Minor IN THE MID EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS DR. HARVEY KERR WAS THE FIRST PHYSICIAN IN THE TOWN BROAD RIPPLE.

Victory of Da Feet! Anne Mahlum would head out on her daily run in Philadelphia and routinely pass a homeless shelter. What began as occasional waves and hellos, soon increased to friendly conversation. One day in 2007, an idea suddenly hit Anne. What is stopping them from running as well? Anne already was well aware with not only the fitness benefits but the vast mental attributes that regular exercise provides: increased confidence and self esteem, sense of accomplishment, elevated mood, and stress relief just to name a few..... And when done in a group setting, it also provides a social aspect and sense of community and belonging. Of course, the shelter gives the residents a roof over their heads and food, but adding a physical component to their lives could be exactly what they need for their bodies and may also give them life tools so they can get "back on their feet". Anne called the shelter and with an abundance of support from the community and the media, Philadelphia's first Homeless Running Program was created. The first run took place on Tuesday, July 3rd at 6 a.m.,and now the organization continues to grow and support its members and communities of each city in the program. Back on My Feet, now also has chapters in Boston, Baltimore, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, New York....and Indianapolis (yay!). Their website has a great explanation of the program's objectives: "The organization does not provide food nor shelter, but instead provides a community that embraces equality, respect, discipline, teamwork and leadership. Back on My Feet’s approach focuses on the very profound and innate desire for all of us – regardless of age, race, socio-economic status – to feel recognized, appreciated, valued and important. Through dedication and hard work, Members earn the opportunity to create a new road for themselves by advancing to the "Next Steps" phase of the program where they gain access to educational, job training and employment opportunities, as well as financial aid. In short, BoMF focuses on changing the direction of people’s lives by changing the way they see themselves." The BoMF program is much more than running as well. Each regular participant has access to the BoMF Next Steps program staff to develop a road map for developing an independent lifestyle. As the website explains "Members have access to educational and job training opportunities, and through dedication to the program, earn financial aid to help them move toward employment and permanent housing. Members can use financial aid to address barriers to selfsufficiency including outstanding fines, tools for a job, transportation, education, certifications and security deposits. On average, 75 percent of Members are in the Next Steps phase of the program – a true testament to the efficacy and sustainability of the program." Since the program was founded over 50% of participants go on to lead an independent lifestyle. Amazing! BoMF is always looking for volunteers and/or donations. Go to www. backonmyfeet.com for more information about this amazing program that not only changes the lives of the residents and volunteers, but also changes the community! Just another way that fitness and physical activity SAVES lives :)

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Word to the Wise: Water Has the drought worn on you like it has to me? I don’t remember a year like this, EVER! This year my garden has been a real challenge. Furthermore, I am anxious to see if my lawn will green up again, and I fear for the survival of trees and shrubs. If you look at our weather pattern, this is the third consecutive year we have had some degree of drought. This year in particular has been cataclysmic, and the cumulative impact is evident. We lost a 70-foot tulip tree because of last year’s dryness at the end of the summer. My goal for the summer of ’12 was to finally grow tomatoes in my shady yard. With the demise of the tulip tree, the yard was finally opened to receiving more sun. I was eager to try straw bale gardening, which involves hollowing out holes in a bale, inserting top soil, and planting seedlings. Each bale had two tomato plants and one zucchini plant with edges of basil. I also decided to tear up a perennial garden and turn it into an elevated vegetable garden. What a year to begin new gardens! Of course the biggest challenge immediately became watering. I was faithful and watered every three days. New hose connectors that let me clip on extensions or sprinklers were great helps. Luckily I am now harvesting tomatoes for the first time after 28 years of wishing. So it is sun and lots of watering that made the difference. As fortune would have it, I’ve long known the importance of water because it’s a key element to maintaining a habitat for birds and wildlife that I want for my yard. In fact, water is one of the requirements that has to be offered to become a Certified Wildlife Habitat for the National Wildlife Federation. This year’s drought has made it even more important to have water available. Through the summer, my yard has birdbaths stationed on all sides of the house. A small pond with a pump recirculates water. Also, I placed additional containers of open water on the edges of the yard for any wildlife that ventured through our property. The combination of rapid evaporation and lots of critters availing themselves of these sources reminded me to keep replenishing supplies on a daily basis. In addition to increased feeding (moisture in the seeds), birds thoroughly enjoyed the times my sprinkler was in use. I saw a myriad of different species darting in an out of the sprays. My suggestion to all who are reading this is to keep providing water through the fall and into winter. Plants and trees in the area are so stressed that they need prolonged watering. Supposedly grass can go dormant, but drought can be fatal to trees and shrubs. Garden centers and tree trimmers may be the only ones to come out ahead when all is said and done. As the season changes, don’t put the hoses away too soon. Give trees and shrubs sustained watering for as long as possible. Hopefully they will survive until spring to again begin the cycle of growth. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
