mario@broadripplegazette.com Barbara Shoup is one of Indiana’s most prolific writers. Her young adult fiction novels captivate readers and have won numerous accolades. The title of her new book, An American Tune, was inspired by one of the country’s great songwriters. “I had a friend in college who became involved in radical politics that changed her life pretty drastically. I’ve always been interested in how somebody believes in something passionately and then commits illegal acts that changes the course of her life forever. I’m interested in the idea of secrets and keeping them from the people you love. The books takes place in the run up to the Iraq war and seeing how many parallels there were to the Vietnam War and the secrets the character suppressed for a very long time. The character went underground in the 1960s and never told her family how things really were. It was different then because people my age were more innocent because we believed we could make a change. The title is from a Paul Simon song and all of the chapters have song titles. It’s got a lot to do with the feel of that sense of that period of time,” she recalled. Released in September, An American Tune can be found on amazon.com and at Indy Reads Books downtown. “I started the book in 2002 and it was published 10 years later. I did a lot of revisions and put it away. Books evolve when you put away a draft and see all kinds of things that need to be done. It is published by Indiana University Press from Breakaway Books,” Ms. Shoup said. Dan Wakefield, author of Going All The Way, praised her recent book: “Barb Shoup’s new novel, An American Tune brings to life an important time in our history that young people don’t know and older people would rather forget – the idealism and protests of ‘sixties youth against the war in Vietnam and the shadow it casts in today’s world.” She writes short fiction, poetry, essays and conducts interviews. Her young adult novels, Wish You Were Here and Stranded in Harmony were selected by the American Library Association Best Books for Young Adults. Vermeer’s Daughter was a School Library Journal Best Adult Book for Young Adults. She also has written a travel article about visiting Edith Wharton’s grave in France. Ms. Shoup mentioned a creative grant she recently received: “I won the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Regional Indiana Author Award for 2012 in September. The nice part of it was receiving a $2,500 grant to give to my favorite library (Indianapolis Marion County Public Library branch) at 4180 North College Avenue.” Her calling to write began at a young age. “I started writing as soon as I could write, but I had a funny experience when I wrote my first novel when I was 11 years old. It was about an African American girl who was escaping through the Underground Railroad – like escaping on a subway with dining cars. I submitted it to a publisher, but was rejected. I was so embarrassed that I just stopped writing and didn’t start again until my late 20s,” she recalled. “When I was a kid, I received books from my grandparents in London. My mom was a war bride (in the Royal Air Force) who met my father during World War II. My novel, Faithful Women, draws upon this period of time, although it is set in contemporary time,” she added. A renewed interest in writing began a new chapter in her life. “I took my first class at the Writers’ Center in 1979. It was originally part of the free university in Broad Ripple in the 1970s and later became a non-profit organization. I’ve always been involved in it and later became Executive Director of it. I always loved novels and 5 Random Rippling Aristocr.

loved to read them. I just write what is interesting to me. There are certain things that interest you in the way that you look at a story. I think that writers in general see the complexity of a situation that other people don’t see. As a teacher, I was always interested in finding those writers who didn’t think they were very good. I’ve stayed in touch with many of my students. That is a very rewarding kind of thing. I love to teach and I miss it when I’m not doing it,” she noted. Teaching students may have been a prelude to Ms. Shoup’s writing for them. “The young adult market (teens and twenties) was a market that I kind of got into accidentally. I taught writing at Broad Ripple High School in the Center for Humanities and Performing Arts for 20 years and was interested in high school kids. I wrote a novel, Wish You Were Here that was set in Broad Ripple Village and released in 1994 that had a high school student as a main character. I tried writing Stranded in Harmony as an adult book, but couldn’t get it to work, so I took an adult character from it and shifted them to a young adult book with his story. Some

things were left out and added. It was an interesting process,” she mentioned. “A fiction writer’s job is to be someone else and make it believable. You get to try on a lot of different identities. A good fiction novel expresses a truth that is beyond fact. You’re trying to figure out how to create that time on the page. It’s rewarding just being in the story. I love to sit down and enter that world of my novel, which seems very real to me. Time will go by and I love to be involved in it and solve the problems that come up along the way,” she said. In addition to being Executive Director of the Writers’ Center, located at the Indianapolis Art Center in Broad Ripple Village, Ms. Shoup is an associate faculty member at Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis. She is also an associate editor with Other Voices Books. It was originally a literary magazine, but is now a publishing company where she does screening (as a first reader) and proofreading of submitted works. When a manuscript arrives, it is read by a team. “You need to be prepared to do a lot of revisions because nobody gets it right the first time. Learn how to write and worry about getting published later and come to the Writers’ Center. It’s important to have a community of writers. It can be lonely work and you can find a group of kindred spirits who can be friends. That’s one of the things that we do at the Writers’ Center. We can find support groups that help them along their path,” she advised. “The Writers’ Center has classes for aspiring writers and we do outreach programs for children and adults. Our annual gathering is Saturday, November 10 at Indiana Landmarks Center, located at 1210 Central Avenue. We’ll have a keynote speaker (Allison Joseph) and several writers from around Indiana speak as well. Part of the job of the Writers’ Center is to recognize and promote writers from around Indiana,” she said. Those interested can register at: www.indianawriters.org or call 255-0710. Ms. Shoup has long standing ties to the community. “I’ve been a Broad Ripple resident since 1969. This is my community and I really love living in Broad Ripple. When I was teaching at BRHS, I did a project (about five or six times) with juniors who researched businesses where they interviewed proprietors. We put together books about the businesses. It was a great way for the kids to get out of school and gain an appreciation for the small businesses in Broad Ripple and their history. The stories include Lobraicos, Fire Station #32, Stationers and French restaurant Renee’s on Westfield Boulevard. The things about Broad Ripple that was so great was that the students could walk out and be within the community. A lot of people that owned businesses also lived in the area,” she noted. Writing is a dominant theme in her family. One of her daughters is a freelance writer who also writes books and is a jazz dancer who does a lot of community theatre. Her other daughter is an attorney who drafts documents. Synopsis of Ms. Shoup’s books can be read at www.barbarashoup.com. Her blog is www.barbarashoup.blogspot.com. Her teaching and writing has inspired many potential authors to take the next step pursuing their craft.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle
I always say that all of my roads lead to Broad Ripple. This column marks my seventh anniversary of writing for the Gazette. I clearly remember running into Alan Hague at the Broad Ripple Farmer’s Market back when it was held at the Indianapolis Art Center. He mentioned something about wanting to write about me and I told him that I’d rather write. And the rest is history. I’ve met all sorts of amazing folks and have heard hundreds of great and some not-so-great bands since Buzzing Around Town started. Writing this column has opened many doors for me, including freelance gigs for NUVO newsweekly and Ghettoblaster Magazine. Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Austin City Limits Festival and spent a good chunk of my time in the photo pits talking about Broad Ripple and the music that I’ve seen in the Village. It was great to see the Avett Brothers on a large stage. I first saw them play on the porch of the Jazz Cooker in 2005 for the Midwest Music Summit, and
handful photographers allowed to shoot their show. I was telling the kids from the college papers that I first saw the Chili Peppers in 1985 at the Patio. There are several grainy YouTube videos of the show (yes, there was video back in the day). I was in college then and I remember finishing my waitressing shift at Arni’s, driving the hour it took to get from Purdue to Indianapolis, changing out of my polyester uniform in the car, and spending my tip money on the cover charge and two beers. It was a crazy show. The band was all over the stage and in various stages of dress – there were tube socks involved, if you know what I mean. Anyway, in the past 27 years I’ve seen them in increasingly larger venues to arena stages. If anything the remaining band members – Anthony Kiedis and Flea – are in better shape now. Drummer Chad Smith joined the band in 1989; guitar player Josh Klinghoffer has been part of the lineup since 2009. For the record Klinghoffer was six-years old the first time I saw the Chili Peppers. There were teenagers in the ACLF crowd that had been in the front row since 11:00 that morning that hadn’t been born when the band formed. The Red Hot Chili Peppers arrived on stage to thousands of fists pumping and screaming fans, and they started out with the energy to match the crowd. They started with “Dani California” and played with an intensity reserved for younger men. Ironically Klinghoffer, the youngster, is nursing a broken foot and played a good part of the show from a chair, but couldn’t help jumping up and joining the fray several times. The band ran through several of their hits, “Otherside,” “Suck My Kiss,” “Tell Me Baby,” “Under the Bridge,” By the Way,” and “Give it Away” during their two-hour set. I can’t imagine that everyone didn’t have a great time. I know I did. And part of my fun was thinking about that fun night at the Patio. All roads do lead to Broad Ripple. I’ll see you out and about! -Nora

have been smitten ever since. The band has matured since then, but they haven’t lost their enthusiasm and charm. They drew a big crowd at the festival despite competing with Iggy & The Stooges playing at the other end of the park. The Avett Brothers have made bluegrass-tinged pop cool, as evidences by the thousands of 20-somethings singing along and dancing. I was lucky enough to be picked by the Red Hot Chili Peppers as one of the

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
Taste of South America: A Culinary Adventure for a Great Cause What do WTHR Weatherman Chuck Lofton, Chimichurri sauce, and wines of South America have in common? The Ronald McDonald house of Indianapolis of course! It's time once again for the annual wine and food event that benefits the essential work of the Ronald McDonald House on the IUPUI campus. Each year guests have the opportunity to "taste" their way thru a culinary and musical presentation of a foreign land. This year it is South America. I have traveled to the wine regions of both Chile and Argentina where the land is lush and exotic and the food is fresh and delicious and the people are welcoming. Oh yes, the wines. Well- some of the most ripe and ready for enjoyment with friends and food. That is how I would categorize them. And I would return to those countries in a moment. And you can get a "taste" of it all without the jet lag or airport hassle next month. On Friday November 2 at the Indiana Roof Ballroom guests will sample dozens of wines from Argentina, Chile and Brazil while they indulge in exotic and delicious dishes from these countries including Papas Fritas; Skirt Steak with Chimichurri & Empanadas; Espetinhos - Brazil's version of shish kabob;and the Sweet Essence from Paradise, -- Plantains, Mangos and Passion Fruit . While you eat and drink you can also SHOP! The Mercado del Puerto Silent Auction Market Place will offer over 95 tantalizing packages of fine wine collections; travel escapes to Martha’s Vineyard, Chicago, New York, Hawaii; *Broadway shows, Colts tickets and sports collectibles; unique Chef’s dinners and in-home wine tasting experiences; holiday décor and gifts; gourmet goodies; tastes and treasures from around the world. Entertainment will sizzle with performances from recording/performance artist Anita Hall and Brazilian pianist Eugenio Urrutia-Borlando. Cathy Morris will once again dazzle guests with her Brazilian jazz showcasing Argentine violin and guitar. And get a lesson in the tango from the 5 Star Dance Studio. And don't forget Chuck! Emceeing the evening and leading the Brazilian Carnaval Dessert Parade will be WTHR SkyTrak weatherman for Eyewitness News Sunrise, Chuck Lofton. There are still seats available and can be purchased on line at www.rmh-indiana. org or by calling 317 267 0605 ext. 227. This is truly one of the best wine/food combinations in the city. I will be there pouring wine and marching in the parade with Chuck. Jill A. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Carbon Cycle: Indiana and the World Breathe Together Adults are invited as Indiana University geography professor Dr. Faiz Rahman returns to present new results of his NASA-funded carbon cycle research in the Morgan Monroe State Forest during the program, “The Carbon Cycle: Indiana and the World Breathe Together,” on Tuesday, October 30 at 6 p.m. at the Glendale Branch, 6101 N. Keystone Avenue. Learn how the early spring and record summer heat are affecting forest productivity and how the research can influence key public policy decisions. Dr. Rahman is principal investigator of two large NASA research projects. In a highly-visual presentation, he will share an updated overview of what we know, and what we still don’t know, about the carbon cycle. He will also discuss research on other forested areas in the U.S. and in rapidly-disappearing mangrove swamps in southeast Asia. Dr. Rahman will return in spring 2013 to share what he and his team are learning in their research and why it matters to residents of Indiana. His presentations offer a fascinating glimpse into science and its impact on our daily lives. This program is co-sponsored by NASA, Indiana University and the Monroe County Public Library. Monon Drainage Improvements Project Update The Department of Public Works and Indy Parks have determined that the Monon Drainage Improvements Project will be slated for construction in spring 2013. During the public meeting held on Sept. 18, additional drainage issues were brought to our attention along 75th St. In order to complete a more comprehensive drainage improvement project, our engineers and designers are working to add more improvements to the project scope. This additional work will be done outside of the Monon Trail area and will not interrupt trail usage. Plans are still in place for construction on the trail and any closure time will be limited to two to three weeks, as previously discussed. We anticipate that plans will be in place for construction to begin in early spring of 2013, starting with work along 75th St and then moving to the Monon Trail. To keep up with the project, please visit us at www.indy.gov/Monon. Regards, RebuildIndy
A general loosening can be helpful. It is easy to get hemmed in by habits. The same recapitulates the same. Rigidity sets in. Magic ceases. A capricious roll of the dice may be in order.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the right section of the top row which contains 1-6-9. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 6. The 7 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The 7 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above the 6. The only place left is to the right of the 1. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

I have opted not to write a new column but to rerun my column from this time last year. Many of my readers told me how much they enjoyed it. I enjoyed writing it so if you missed it this time around it is for you. If you are a veteran or family of a vet……Thank you! Veterans Day is November 11th. Our wars and our conflicts have been many and have strung on too long. Perhaps we should follow suit and string Veterans Day longer. Maybe we should devote the whole month of November to these noble people who serve our country. If October can be Breast Cancer Awareness Month scattered with pink ribbons why not November with yellow ribbons? Has your workplace shown special gratitude? For several years my husband’s place of employment has had a recognition celebration with cake, candy, flags, photos and personal thank yous. He says there are about 8-12 that are honored. At our church veterans are recognized and asked to stand. I am always so proud. At one time I would have seen three of my own standing….my dad, husband and son. Dad is gone now. WWII vets are fading from us fast. Korean War vets are with us and Viet Nam vets. I don’t know much about the Korean War. I have no relatives from that conflict. Viet Nam was a draft situation and my friends and husband served. I was the bride of two weeks when my husband (who volunteered with the Navy) left me in tears at the airport. There were no emails, Youtube, cell phones or Skype. We talked once when he made his way through a long line at a pay phone in Japan. Once in a while I would receive in the mail a roll of film in a canister that I would immediately have developed. We wrote letters every day. As I remember, daily the Indianapolis Star would run a column on the back page of the front section honoring a fallen Hoosier Soldier. Could it really have been daily? It certainly seemed so. Then one day I saw David Robert’s name. He was my senior prom date. Looking at that back page daily reminds me of the movie Gone With the Wind when Scarlett rode her wagon in to Atlanta to join others to read the posted list of the dead and wounded fighting in the Civil War. I have a great grandfather who fought in the Civil War. At the time he was the youngest to graduate from Michigan’s med school. He was a young doctor on the front lines who kept an in depth journal that we have copies of. It is fascinating. What a trip through time to the “shock and awe” of the missiles watched on TV of the Gulf War, the war in which my son served. My mother traced my family veterans back to the Revolutionary War and urged me to join The Daughters of the Revolution. I did not. Have you thought far back in your family and preserved any letters or medals from your relatives? I decorate my Dad’s, Father-in-law’s and Uncle’s graves with small flags on Memorial and Veterans Days. Once at Fort Harrison the traveling replica of the Viet Nam War Memorial was on display. This is the wall that is in sections that has every fallen vets name listed. It is huge and takes a book to look up a name to find where on the wall the name is located. I found David Roberts. I cried. It makes you cry even if you don’t know any of them. Did you know that Indianapolis has the most monuments of any city other than Washington DC? As an owner of a retail pet supply store I jumped at an opportunity one of my vendors presented. The purchase of their products help to pair wounded veterans with service dogs. Here’s how…. The program is called Carolina Canines for Veterans (CFV), a 501(C)3 non-profit organization that operates solely on private donations. Go to WWW. CANININESFORSERVICE.ORG . It is a triple win. CFV rescues dogs from shelters, saves their lives, and gives them a purpose by training them to serve wounded veterans. The program trains military prisoners to raise and train the service dogs provided to the veterans with disabilities, thus enhancing military inmates’ rehabilitation. After 11 months of training, the rescue-turned-service dogs are able to perform 70 commands that assist with everyday tasks, helping return independence to our veterans, many of whom come home with serious physical and mental injuries. A CVF service dog is valued at $40,000 and placed at no cost with the veteran. Thank a vet today (and everyday). I personally like to thank the folks at American Legion Post #34, on Westfield Blvd., for remembering our Missing in Action. Right inside their door is a table set for one, waiting for a return. It is so touching. Go have dinner there. It’s open to the public. They advertise in the Gazette. This year they are smoke free…..yeah! As an aside, this year while on vacation in Hilton Head, SC I met a woman who lived there. She and her husband had retired there seven years ago. I asked where they had lived before retirement and learned that he was a New York City fireman. We spoke gingerly about 911. I felt humbled just being in her presence, having some inkling of what that must have been like since it was aired on TV persistently. While not a veteran in the military sense the service that those responders tendered to our nation is unforgettable. We are not the same and never will be. Pets (and vets make) you smile. EASY
by Laura Minor GUILFORD AVENUE WAS KNOWN PREVIOUSLY AS BELLEFONTAINE (PRONOUNCED BELL FOUNTAIN) AND CHERRY STREET BEFORE THAT.
So Easy Even a Caveman can do it? Every couple of years a new diet emerges with promises of being the new BIG cure to obesity and other weight/diet related health woes. And many people jump on the bandwagon without truly educating themselves about the ins and out of the diet's pros and cons. Therefore I am going to start choosing a different diet to profile every few issues and give my two cents on the bonuses and minuses of the program. No, I am not a registered dietician but I have been helping people with lifestyle modifications for over 10 years, and think I have heard just about everything under the sun when it comes to the varying opinions on what is "healthy" and what truly is. This issue I am going to explore the Paleo Diet. The Paleo Diet is based on the idea that we should eat like our caveman ancestors, who consumed what they could catch and kill, pull out of the sea, and gather from trees and bushes. By most accounts, this is not bad advice. No question that it’s healthier to eat fresh food that is close to its natural state, that is unaltered in any way and unprocessed; Unargueably better than a diet rich in than a daily diet based on sugary cereals, candy bars, burgers, soda, and fried foods. Duh? However, when we dive deeper into what this exactly means things get a little more sticky, and challenging. Paleo blacklists dairy products, legumes (e.g., peas, beans, peanuts), and grains. The premise is that none of these were part of our diet before we began to domesticate animals and farm crops. The argument is that we’re not genetically adapted to eating these foods and they therefore lead to disease and obesity. While I do agree with fresh foods are best when compared to processed, I do have a couple of points of issue. First, all human ancestors did not eat the exact same things based on culture, geographic location, etc. Clearly there wasn't one diet back then which equates to the current paleo diet. For example, I read that the diet of one African tribe called Maasai used to be primarily meat, whole milk, and blood. Whereas, Northern Europeans adapted to a diet high in dairy products with very low levels of lactose intolerance, while more than 90 percent from most African and Asian countries can’t handle dairy products. So, there truly isn't ONE paleo diet in this regard. Secondly, I warn against a diet that strictly labels foods as "bad" and completely off limits. This entirely disallows for vast amounts of food which in great moderation are a nice diversion from a faithfully healthy diet. Sure, I avoid processed foods for the most part, but do I enjoy and pizza and a scoop of ice cream here and there? Sure! And the case against legumes being off limits...? I would struggle very hard not to have my nearly daily dose of hummus! The truth is that people who are physically active and consume a nutritious, portion-controlled diet can accommodate occasional servings of what fanatics consider bad foods. Thirdly, the paleo diet highly restricts carbohydrates. The problem with this is that the word "carb" has been highly abused. People have been brainwashed to think that if they have a single bite of a carb they will turn into a blimp immediately. Fact is, some carbs provide more nutritional value than others. If I want to be healthy and energetic, I’m going to eat more whole grains, fruits and veggies than chocolate cake. So, my take-away on the Paleo diet is this: Following the general guidelines of the paleo diet should be fine for most people, but dairy is fine in moderation for those who are not lactose intolerant. Also, steer away from completely eliminating certain foods and/or carbs altogether. Stay active, eat healthy, and allow yourself a treat here and there!...as long as HERE isn't far more often than THERE :) Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. BRVA elections held at October meeting The annual election / quarterly public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) was held at the Indianapolis Art Center on October 23. About 50 were in attendance to vote for candidates for BRVA board positions. A new feature of this quarterly BRVA meeting was a 30 minute social time at 7 pm, with the meeting starting at 7:30 pm. First on the agenda was the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department. There was a discission of the late-night loitering problem in the Village. IMPD has been bringing 25-50 officers in on the weekends to keep people moving and to patrol the streets. The importance of lighting was stressed. Residents can help by leaving on porch lights and can even add IPL lights to nearby poles. While North District statistics were not handed out, it was stated that in the past 28 days only one strong arm robbery occurred in the Broad Ripple area. Mark Wolf then gave a run-down of the BRVA's past year accomplishments. Finally, each of the eight candidates for the board introduced themselves. There were four open board positions. The four candidates voted in: Helen Carroll, Resident Member Adam Hill, Business Member, LOR Corporation Ben Shine, Business Member, Indianapolis Art Center Justin McKeand, Business Member, BMO Harris Bank The next BRVA public meeting will be January 15, 2013, at the Indianapolis Art Center.
