Parcha Sweets - Chef Marion's bakery By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com Charlotte Sanders discussed the sweet aroma of success that lead her to Parcha Sweets, located at 2101 Broad Ripple Avenue. [Old-timers may remember Arthur Treachers Fish & Chips at this location in the 70s -Alan] “I started working here in April of 2011. I went to school at Ivy Tech for their baking and pastry program. Toward the end, I didn’t have any work experience, but went to the business, interviewed with Chef Marion (Mulero), became their baker and since have recently become the 2101 Broad Ripple Ave shop’s front-end manager. The store opened in November of 2010. She [II31 on map] trained me in how to bake everything (317) 254-2000 that appears in the store,” Ms. Sanders explained. www.parchasweets.com She described their desserts: “We have over 13 different varieties of cup cakes. We do mini Bundt Cakes, Coconut Macaroons, pies and a Puerto Rican style pastry called a Quesito. On a daily basis, we have those items and Mini-Pies, Chocolate Mousse and French Macaroons. Latin and South American countries have a dessert called Tres Leches (Spanish for “three milks”). We do our own version here with three types of milk and in-house made marshmallow fluff. One of our best selling items is our Ginger sandwich, which is a generous size Ginger Cookie filled with rich cream cheese. We offer dessert tables as well for the holidays, weddings and special occasions. We’re a small business with a lot to offer.” Her hobby proved to be the ideal recipe for a career. “When I was in college, it was something I enjoyed in my free time, baking cookies in a small oven. A couple of friends told me that I should have a small business. I decided to go to school and

All of my professional experience has been here at Parcha Sweets from selling kiddie cakes and couture purses. We try to stretch out and do different things,” she noted. Their European selection of menu items includes Tiramisu and Chocolate Truffles. In addition to ethnic items like Tres Leches, they have Puerto Rican style Bread Pudding and Mousse in assorted flavors. Their All-American selection includes Cranberry White Chocolate Pudding, Fudge Brownies and Chocolate Cake with Hazelnut Glaze, Mini-Pies and Fruit Tarts. Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Happy December! Don’t forget to add music to your holiday shopping lists. We are lucky to have three wonderful independent music stores in our neighborhood. They not only sell music in all forms, but they have great selections of music paraphernalia, record players, tee shirts, gift certificates, and other cool goodies. You can also purchase local singer-songwriter recordings at a cart in City Market on Wednesdays.

Melissa Ferrick, Anne Heaton Wednesday, December 5 The Irving Theater 5505 E. Washington St 8:00 p.m., $17 advance/$20 at door, all-ages
Since it’s been over eight years since CATH coffeehouse closed, I should give you some history. CATH was in a cozy renovated gas station on the northeast corner of 54th and College, where Fresh Market is now. The coffeehouse hosted at least 100 acoustic singer-songwriter shows a year. I had the pleasure of managing the coffeehouse and booking the music. And most of the musicians slept on my sofa on the way to their next gig. One of the most ardent music fans was Robin Coleman. After CATH closed Robin started booking the displaced musicians at various other venues and I gratefully passed the baton of “Godmother” of the folk music scene to her. She started Segment of Society and hasn’t looked back, booking hundreds of shows in the last eight years. Robin has been encouraging me to see Melissa Ferrick for a decade. She has
offered to drive me to Chicago, and various other cities to catch a show, but it never worked out. I can’t imagine how excited Robin is to have finally booked Melissa for a local show! Ferrick is often called a music icon. Her voice is instantly familiar and comfortable and photo courtesy of Melissa Ferrick her fierce guitar driven Melissa Ferrick folk rock cuts right to heart of her songs. Her impressive career longevity as an independent artist is well earned and speaks to her amazing talent. She has taken inspiration from the incredible artists she’s shared the stage with, including Morrissey, Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, and Weezer, I’m also looking forward to hearing Anne Heaton again. I was lucky enough to hear her play at CATH and she is an alumnus of my sofa. I’ve been listening to bits of her new record as I write this. Her voice is as strong as ever and her piano playing is the perfect accompaniment to her soaring voice and gorgeous songs. I can’t wait for the show. See you there!

I’ll see you out and about! -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. More than 100,000 people packed downtown Indianapolis for the annual fall parade. “The kids have much to be proud of. Many of them were fighting colds, and this was the first weekend of the fall break, so we could not be happier,” said Broad Ripple Band Director Thomas Ewigleben. An unexpected second “win” came when, due to a delay in the schedule, Broad Ripple was asked by event organizers to play again. Ewigleben then invited the Blue Devils band from Shortridge Magnet High School for Law and Public Policy to join the Rockets in a selection performed together. The combined Broad RippleShortridge band lined up, danced and played to a thrilled crowd.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Free Rain Garden and Native Planting Lunch and Learns
The City of Indianapolis’ Office of Sustainability will host three free Lunch-and-Learn sessions about the City’s rain garden and native planting area program for site designers, landscapers, landscape architects, nursery managers, plant suppliers and interested residents. The sessions will be held at the Department of Code Enforcement’s Vonnegut Conference Room at 1200 S. Madison Ave on December 4, 5, and 11 from 12pm to 1pm. Rain gardens are one type of green infrastructure the City is implementing for improved water quality, cost savings, and enhanced quality of life. Rain gardens with native planting allow for more infiltration than turf grass lawns or conventional landscaping. Storm water travels through the plant roots and the soil, filtering out contaminants, bacteria and nutrients typically found in storm water runoff. They reduce the amount of storm water runoff and reduce drainage and flooding concerns in neighborhoods. Lunch-and-Learn sessions require pre-registration to attend. Attendees will learn about water quality concerns in Marion County, how the rain garden and native planting area program works, how to register projects with the city and how a rain garden can benefit your business. Lunch will be provided for all registrants. Sign up to attend at the SustainIndy homepage or at http://tinyurl. com/RainGardenLunch. For more information on the rain garden and native planting area program and other green infrastructure projects visit www.indy.gov/sustainindy or follow us on Twitter at @sustainindy.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 6 in the left section of the top row which contains 1-2-7. The 6 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left and right of the 2. The 6 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 1. The 6 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space above and below the 2. The only place left is the top left corner, two space above the 1. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
My kind of Holiday Spirits Journeyman Distillery in Three Oaks, Michigan has some craft spirits that will bring plenty of HO and no HUMBUG to your holiday celebrations. The Distillery is located in an 1800's era building that once housed a factory that made corsets and buggy whips. (Think about THAT for a moment and you will understand why corsets are no longer the fashion). That sense of time, history and local influence is reflected by owner and distiller Bill Welter who is originally from nearby Valparaiso, Indiana. Bill uses organic grains from Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois to make his eclectic eco-friendly spirits. I recently tasted a few and so should you if artisan spirits are on your Santa's Wish List this season: * Roads End Rum–Made from black strap molasses; rich and oh so smooth. * Bilberry Black Hearts Gin–Bilberry is a crossbred fruit from blueberry and huckleberry. Great floral notes and subtle hints of juniper. * Buggy Whip Wheat Whiskey–Notes of butterscotch, caramel, and warmth. Delish! * Jalapeno–White rye whiskey distilled with jalapeno peppers grown in Welter's own garden The local cocktail culture continues to grow both downtown and in Broad Ripple. In case you want to make your own, or give some of these tasty "components" for the holidays, here are some other craft spirits that you can find on bar menus and local wine/liquor shoppes: Backbone Bourbon, Johnny Drum Kentucky Bourbon, Concannon Irish Whiskey, Dolin Vermouth, Hum Liqueur, Lazzaroni Amaretto, Sortilege Maple Whiskey, Square ONE Cucumber Vodka, Koval Ginger Liquor.

Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith There is always something going on in Broad Ripple. Businesses come and go and this publication keeps us posted. Not only do I write this column but as a reader it is how I keep up with our community. I have a business location downtown as well so I look to Urban Times to keep me abreast on what’s coming and going there. I am getting dizzy from all the changes. Downtown is on an apartment craze. Developers are building new properties in all price ranges. Suddenly it can be affordable to live downtown again. The condo building seems to be slowing in favor of apartments since the economy has taken a beating. There are some pricey apartments but then there are some that are affordable based on income. Six years ago I remember when that concept was introduced for the blighted corner at 49th & College by developer Leif Hinterberger. Neighbors and the neighborhood association opposed it. Meetings were held regularly to discuss the “affordable” apartments that were proposed. No one, at the time, could get past that word. Would it be government subsidized and “low” income? Hinterberger introduced us to TIF (Tax Increment Financing) and tax abatements which needed explaining because no one was familiar with it. While he and his supporters did all they could to bring forward thinking to the neighborhood other developers moved ahead with city planners and politicians and lo and behold his model has sprung up elsewhere, most notably in a project called Trail Side in the 800 block of Mass Ave. It is a four story building with 60 plus affordable apartments, underground parking for residents and commercial space for lease on the ground level. It is directly across the street from our downtown storefront and was in the planning stages when I signed the lease so I missed out on the meetings prior to construction. It was built in a year and became ready for occupancy last May. The apartments are full but no takers on the commercial space below. Fellow merchants understand. Developers do not. Rent
for commercial space has to be affordable as well. Parking for patrons has to be available. My observation shows that all of these new developments have ground floor commercial. Who do they think is going to fill it? Small retail business is drying up, as much as we tout “Shop Local”. Everyone wants unique, quaint businesses that give charm and character to their community but small business is in trouble due to the economy, government regulations, internet competition and even lack of support. The proposed development at 49th and College also had commercial space on the ground floor. As a resident and a business owner of that area, that is dubbed SOBRO, I am sad that TIF, tax abatements and political interest seem so focused on downtown and the Fountain Square area. It is amazing the changes occurring there and the blight that has been replaced. But as I drive home from my Mass Ave. store north on College I pass that corner and I wonder if it still sits locked in controversy and financial stalemate. Other neighborhoods seem to get things done but this one resisted change and a bright developer with ideas that others have copied. I hope to hear soon that the gridlock is broken and that corner will have a new lease on life with Hinterberger at the helm after all these years trying to make it happen. Aah… politics. I am out of the loop on the 49th and College corner now that I moved my store from there to 52nd and College three years ago….a corner with a whole hot bed of activity and its own share of comings, goings and politics. We are so grateful to have our anchor business, Aristocrat Pub, back and running. They reopened this month after a devastating fire closed them for more than a year. It is so good to see lights and action again. The street is jammin’. Their new bar is beautiful and friendly as it is configured in a big square serving 60 taps. The dining room side is family friendly and hopping. They had some kinks to work out as they were slammed with business by those who couldn’t wait for their favorite neighborhood haunt to reopen not to mention the curious from other areas. Things are settling and business seems rosy. As the literal dust settles more is falling as another bar/restaurant (maybe two) will be opening across the street. Food columnist Jolene Ketzenberger from the Indianapolis Star reported in August that it was to be starting construction in September as a restaurant and bar opening in January but in September the Indianapolis Business Journal reported (that what once was zoned for and approved by Meridian Kessler Land Use Committee) has now changed direction and become two different named restaurants in the same building with a shared kitchen due to parking concerns of the neighborhood. As for me, I’m just howling at the moon thinking is there no other use for old buildings but bars and restaurants? The old Monon Fitness Center at 5301 Winthrop has been proposed to be a microbrewery, beer garden and restaurant. It would seat 500 people indoors and out and accommodate another 500 for standing. The zoning hearing is December 13th. I grew up at 55th and Winthrop and that site used to be Lux laundry. It had a bad fire. This could be a big deal due to brown field issues. Couldn’t that become affordable apartments in a residential neighborhood? Now we’re dealing with more politics. Does anyone need pet therapy? Susan Smith is a life-long area resident and is the owner of City Dogs Grocery located at 52nd and College and at 884 Massachusetts Avenue. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter A Nifty Gift It’s gift-giving season again. If you’re like me, there’s a lot of thought behind each selection. What has pleased before, what might be appreciated this year, what has caught my eye — options race through my mind morning, noon, and night. In the midst of this year’s quandary, I hit on a bright idea: a gift that could give hours of enjoyment, entertain anytime, provide good mind exercise, invite solitude or collaboration, and be low-tech without need for batteries or connectivity. Aha, puzzles! Puzzles strike me as a sensational present. They come in variations to suit all ages and sidestep predictability, triggering surprise and fascination. Once this “light bulb” went on in my mind I got to wondering how long puzzles have existed. It didn’t take long to discover that a British mapmaker named John Spilsbury popularized puzzles around 1760. He cut maps into shapes and multiple pieces to teach children geography. In the 1880s the treadle saw was used to cut wood with a picture glued or painted on it. Pencil tracings were scribed on the back, and then the crafter would cut along the lines. Cardboard puzzles followed in the late 1800s, cut by dyes and large presses. They were still reserved for children and were largely what we would call visual aids and educational toys. The explosion of jigsaw puzzles came in the 1920s and ‘30s. Multiple companies produced a wide range of puzzles — some cardboard, some wood. Images included great artwork, maps, and pictures of technology. At the same time, more intricate and difficult puzzles gained wider appeal with children and adults alike. This was still the pre-television era, the time when radio provided a frequent backdrop for families to put puzzles together while listening to broadcasts. Also this was the day when companies used puzzles as premiums, thus making the game form all the more popular. Weekly puzzles were also created. For a few cents young adults, families, and teachers could buy hours of fun, concentration, problemsolving, and entertainment. Jigsaw puzzles fit the bill for multiple audiences. They could be done in a group, by one person, people of different languages and educational skills, day or night. Amazingly, jigsaw puzzle sales reached 10 million per week in 1933. What person reading this column who was alive then did not put together a United States puzzle while growing up? In just the past few years the Backyard Birds store has carried puzzles, noticing a significant uptick in sales. I asked some folks about the appeal of puzzles. “I love the pictures I can choose in a jigsaw puzzle. The colors are usually so vibrant.” “Our family always takes a puzzle to the lake. Surprisingly, we don’t tire of putting a puzzle together more than once.” “We like to put our puzzles together without looking at the box lid to add to the challenge.” These are a few of the comments from people whose favorite puzzles are Birds of the Backyard, Wildflowers, Flags of the U.S., Cardinals, and Barnyard scenes. 1000-piece puzzles are probably the most popular with 750, 500, 300 and 150-piece variations following in appeal for children. There are 3-D puzzles, puzzle globes, and puzzles with irregular border shapes. There are double-sided puzzles and monotone puzzles that make assembly daunting. Although I have not put one together, there are family puzzles with three different sized pieces ranging from large to small so puzzlers of all skill levels can work together. You can even make you own puzzle from your photo or drawing. I have had good luck with printerstudio.com and I understand shutterfly.com in addition to local photo developers provide do-it-yourself puzzles that can be ordered in different sizes and number of pieces. You can also create online jigsaw puzzles at sites like www.jigsawplanet.com. With all these possibilities, puzzles are a winning idea for this season’s gifting. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com. Email your bird questions to Brandt@BroadRippleGazette.com
