We finally had great weather for the annual Broad Ripple Village Association's Lights Up! Parade sponsored this year by Samaritan Ambulance. Residents lined the Village streets after visiting the firehouse for holiday activities, such as making wrapping paper and visiting with Santa. Following the parade was the tree lighting ceremony at the firehouse. mario@broadripplegazette.com United Package Liquors President Adam Hill recently discussed his company’s move in the Broad Ripple area to 1067 Broad Ripple Avenue. “The old store (at 1002 Broad Ripple Avenue) was 2,100 square feet and the new store will be about 3,200 square feet. We will have a much broader selection of wine and craft beer, in addition to more spirits. We’ll also have a large tasting bar inside the new store so customers can sample many of the products offered and attend our weekly tastings. This is all in addition to the everyday low prices and great customer service. Our overall goal is to totally enhance the customer experience inside the store,” Hill explained. UPL remains family owned and operated. “My grandfather, Leon Riggs, started the business in 1964 and turned it into something very special. Prior to coming on board

Happy holidays gentle readers. I love December in the Village. The lights, the shoppers, the window displays, the restaurants full of revelers, and music all warm my community minded heart. Gary Wasson is celebrating ten years of hosting Open Stage shows. If you’ve never been to one, they are a great way to hear several musicians in an intimate setting. Local and touring musicians sign up that evening for a time slot to play, so the lineup is always a fun surprise. The musicians are often trying out new songs or new lineups or dusting off old favorites. The camaraderie between musicians is always fun to soak in and I’ve seen bands form and songs written during the course of an evening. And if you’re lucky Gary will play a few tunes. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple will presented it's 2012 Service to Mankind Award to Tina M. McIntosh, President and CEO of Joy's House, Care and Community For Adults located at 2028 E. Broad Ripple Avenue. Tina founded Joy's House, an adult day service, in 1999 at the age of 27. For years she had dreamed of such a place--an inviting , warm and homelike facility to care for aging and challenged adults during the day. Butler Celebrates Hoosier Hysteria Day at Hinkle Dec. 22
Butler University will honor the legacy of Indiana high school basketball played in Hinkle Fieldhouse by holding Hoosier Hysteria Day, Dec. 22, at Hinkle. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has proclaimed a city observance of “Hoosier Hysteria Day at Hinkle” that Saturday. From 1928 through 1971, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) held its annual boys’ and girls’ basketball tournaments in Butler’s fieldhouse. Each March, thousands of spectators caught up in “Hoosier Hysteria” packed the fieldhouse to cheer on their teams in sectional, regional, and championship games. To celebrate that sports tradition, Butler invites fans of Indiana basketball—especially former players, coaches, officials, and other IHSSA tournament participants—to watch the Butler men’s basketball team play the University of Evansville in Hinkle at 2 p.m. Dec. 22. All Hoosier Hysteria honorees in attendance will be recognized during the game. The 2013 Home Show is right around the corner and is looking for volunteers to work as information personnel and show liaisons. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Backyard Birds Legend “How Santa Knows Who’s Naughty or Nice” One day, a chickadee lit on my feeder and began singing. His song told me a Christmas tale about the year Santa Claus lost the List. Goodness, Santa didn’t know who had been naughty or nice. There was no list! Three days before the big night, Santa was still searching his house, workshop and stable – no list. The Mrs. could be of no help because she had to bake her stollens and kugels to finish her holiday projects. Meanwhile, Santa bellowed, “Where is the List? There will be NO Christmas. I don’t know who has been naughty or nice!” After much rummaging and fretting, there was a peck, peck, peck at the window. Two snowy owls that lived in the hollow of the old tree outside the kitchen window pecked until they got Santa’s attention. “Can we help?” they asked. Santa replied, “Oh, if only. You see, I have no list. Without it, there will be no trip and no gifts!” The two wise owls put their heads together to try to save Christmas. They knew the reindeer could not help because they had to save their strength for the big night. The snowshoe hares were too small to hop very far. The seals only went as far south as the California Coast – not far enough. The elves were too busy making last minute gifts. Was there no one at the North Pole to help? Was there no magic left – no miracles? Finally, the aha! Only one group could help: the birds of the world. All the owls had to do was fly far enough south to issue the alert. Because birds inhabited almost every earthly corner, each bird could go to the home of a boy or girl and watch to see who was naughty or nice. Then the birds would report back so Santa could make the List again. That is exactly what happened. Christmas was saved. Santa wrote the List again because “a little bird told him so”… That is, who was naughty or nice. Because all the gifts were delivered on time that year so long ago, birds have been very much a part of every Christmas celebration ever since. Feeding the birds a special treat is an important part of the holidays – a sheaf of wheat, seed wreaths, fruit and nuts. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the middle section of the top row which contains 2-3-4-5-6. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space between the 4-6. The 7 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces on either side of the 3. The only place left is to the right of the 5. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. & Old Town of Broad Ripple Meeting Minutes The Town of Broad Ripple was incorporated in 1894, and started holding regular meetings at that time. In each issue, I will print my transcription of the old Town of Broad Ripple meeting minutes. These are taken from original, hand-written minutes that contain many spelling errors. I transcribed the records as they were entered, including errors. I will make some corrections/additions to the text in brackets [ ]. The original minutes books are at the Indiana State Archives at 6440 E. 30th St.
Here is the one-hundred thirty-eighth installment:
Street grading specification
Oct 10 1902 The entire width of each sidewalk grade to be covered with fine gravel to a depth of six (6) inches. The east sidewalk grade of Light Ave. to be eight (8) feet wide, the gutter edge to be made six (6) inches above the roadway grade and rise one and one half (1 ½) inches across the walk. Six (6) foot of this sidewalk grade next the property line to be covered with fine gravel to the depth of six (6) inches and the remainder of this sidewalk grade to be filled with earth to even with the top of the sidewalk gravel. In each gutter of Shelby Street, at the Morgan Street crossing shall be placed a culvert two (2) feet wide in the clear and one (1) feet high, to be of white or Burr Oak and to be constructed in a substantial and workman like manner under the direction of the Town Trustees. Between these culverts and (the street-car tracks and the culverts and) the sidewalks shall be filled with gravel, to even with the top of the culverts. Also at the corner of Shelby Street and Light avenue shall be placed a culvert to carry the water from the east and south gutters to the north side of the road and this culvert shall be constructed according to and under the directions of the Town Trustees. All materials furnished and all work done, to be to the entire satisfaction of the Town Trustees. Hervey B. Parking meter update
All Indianapolis parking meters will now allow for longer time limits, making visits to restaurants, theaters, and shops more convenient. Motorists may purchase up to three hours before 5:00 P.M. in the Downtown area and Broad Ripple, six (6) hours in the near downtown areas and up to 10 hours at all other meter locations.

This session looked for input from the residents about the desires for the area from 54th to 42nd in Meridian Kessler that can be incorporated into an updated neighborhood plan. On Saturday, December 1, Midtown Inc. held a re-dedication and tree lighting at Alice Carter Place, located in the triangle below the crossing of Meridian Street and Westfield Boulevard. The round seating area of the park, lined with bricks with messages from donors, had over 100 in attendance for the ceremony. Below, Cynthia Zweber-Free gave a short history of the park and introduced those who have worked so hard to make this park a reality.

Christmas party for the Kids at Noble The annual Christmas party for the Kids at Noble was held at noon, Wednesday December 5 at the Northside Knights of Columbus at 71st Street and Keystone Avenue. Noble serves those with intellectual disabilities in the community. Noble centers are located in Carmel and other locations in the Northern Indy area. This Christmas and Holiday luncheon, held for families and children of Noble is one of the oldest of the Noble and Sertoma traditions. The Broad Ripple Sertoma Club was started in 1958 and made its first contribution to Noble of $14,000 in December of 1959. Through the years the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club has provided to Noble of Indiana nearly $2,000,000 in support. The first Christmas or Holiday parties started in the early 1960s and continues still. It is a time when Noble hosts the Sertoma members and their wives to say "Thank You" for the many years of ongoing support. It is a time when the Sertoma organization provides direct support to some of Noble's neediest of families by presenting individual Christmas gifts. In addition, $14,000 was presented directly to Noble at the beginning of this luncheon. Noble and Sertoma members shared in the cost of the meal and the Sertoma members shopped for the children from the "wish list" which is provided by parents and Noble Staff. The Sertoma club allocated $2,000 to buy clothes and toys for 20 children. A time was set in late November for the members to meet at a local department store to buy the gifts all at one time. With the store discount the $100 allowed for each child actually buys close to $120 value or more in presents. At the time of the luncheon, and after the meal, Santa arrived and helped Sertoma members call out the names and identify the gifts for the different children. The Sertoma shoppers were matched to the families that they shopped for so that they could sit together for their meal. Several members have acknowledged that this celebration is both the highlight of the year and the main reason for their involvement, participation, and support of the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club.

One Wednesday morning last September, I was working with a couple of my favorite clients, when one of them mentioned going to Honduras to provide Christmas presents for a group of Honduran children. I mentioned how wonderful I thought that was and she nonchalantly asked “Do you want to come?” Ha, ha – What?! No way could I even consider doing something like that!! It’s so far out of my Broad Ripple bubble, my head might explode. I had gotten so into my daily routine of working people out, working myself out, and partying on the weekends that I had begun to become quite bored with myself. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job, but it was definitely time to think about something new. Weeks passed and my client asked again “Do you want to go to Honduras?” And without even thinking, I heard myself say “maybe”. Then “maybe” turned into “why not?” and then “yes, I am definitely going. This was in September, so late November/early December still seemed like light years away. As months went on and the time approached, meetings were held, and medications and vaccinations to escape hepatitis, mumps, measles, typhoid fever, malaria, etc. were administered. I thought “what have I gotten myself into?” I was scared and nervous and didn’t know at all what to expect. Turns out, it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life (which says a lot because I have had some pretty amazing experiences in my 42 years ). I learned a lot about the Honduran children of Pedro Atala, Nuevo Paraiso, and Flor Azul, and also about myself. Before this trip I was numb, but during I felt very much alive. Six women were at the airport at 5:00 in the morning (which meant getting up at 3:30 am), with 14 large bags filled with donations from sponsors. Our carryons were all we had for ourselves and sitting on the plane I thought “what are we doing and who are these people travelling with me?” We arrived at the Spanish speaking airport in Tegucigalpa, gathered our luggage, boarded the shuttle and headed immediately to have lunch with Sister Mary Rosa and tour her chapel. Hmm? Again, I thought “what have I gotten into?” Next we headed up the narrow mountain road where our bus driver flew up, down, and around curves with steep drop-offs, while passing vehicles with lightning speed. I was sure we were all going to die!! Finally arriving at Nuevo Paraiso, you would have thought we were Taylor Swift of Justin Beiber. There was a huge sign for us and the children ran up to give us hugs and introduce themselves. I did not speak Spanish, so communication was rough in the beginning, but didn’t matter much by the end of our trip. We stayed in Nuevo Paraiso which is a community of ten children’s group homes established by Sociedad Amigos de los Niños. There are nearly 120 children in this area, some are orphans, however the majority are either placed there due to abuse/neglect or at the request of their families due to extreme poverty. The next few days were spent taking inventory, measuring feet, shopping in Tegucigalpa (6 huge carts in Walmart, not to mention several other stores), and wrapping, wrapping, wrapping. It was hard work, starting everyday at 8 am and not finishing until after 11 pm. Happy Hour consisted of having a couple cocktails while wrapping (and one mishap with a cup of red wine ). Also, the best was spending time with the children when there was time. We also got to do some shopping for ourselves, visited Flor Azul (a farm where the older boys live), and enjoyed a movie and first communion mass with the children. They are poor, but happy. They do not live with their parents, but they are safe and getting an education. My heart goes out to them and I have fallen in love with several who I plan on sponsoring. I think they are grateful for being there and know that they are not one of the many children living in the small, dingy shacks lined all along that mountain road. On the flight back to Indy, I prayed that I would not lose what I had gained during that trip. I vowed to learn Spanish, go to church, be grateful for everything, especially my relationships, try to love with all my heart and not worry about the petty things. I have learned that we must continue to try something new to grow as a person, whether it is a new class, activity, volunteer work, and on and on. And, hopefully sometime soon hablaré español. Ken Lock and Alex Pucillo recently picked up their lives and moved to Broad Ripple, with dogs Rocco and Anita in tow. They wanted to be a part of the Village because they feel it is a great place to live and work, as well as the perfect place lay down roots and get involved in the community. Recently, Ken volunteered to fix and run the BRVA street sweeper to help the effort to beautify the Village. It has been out of service for a while, but now, thanks to Ken, it is ready for use!

Rob Sabatini has been a familiar face in Broad Ripple for more than 20 years. He can often be found hard at work in one of his bars, the Mineshaft Saloon, Rock Lobster, or Average Joe’s, all located on Broad Ripple Avenue. Rob is an active member of the BRVA Board of Directors and he is a founding member of the Broad Ripple Bar and Restaurant Association. One of his main concerns is safety in the Village. UPL Grand Opening Set December 21 United Package Liquors, a long-time fixture at Westfield Boulevard and Broad Ripple Avenue, is planning a move across the street to a new location at 1067 Broad Ripple Avenue in the Broad Ripple Station Shopping Center. A grand opening is planned for Friday, December 21, from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., just in time for holiday party planning. “The grand opening will feature special prices on products, as well as some cool vendor give-a-ways in the store,” said Adam Hill, president of UPL. “Customers will have the chance to sample many new products, as well. Our overall goal is to totally enhance the customer experience inside the store.” The new space is a large improvement over the old, with the key word being large, said Adam. The expanded space will allow UPL to stock more merchandise, such as an expanded selection of spirits, craft beers, and wines, and to offer more services. The store will feature a 14-foot long tasting bar where patrons can sample any number of beers, wines and spirits, during store hours. Additionally, there will be scheduled tastings of featured products every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Flat screen televisions throughout the space will add to the casual atmosphere but serve a practical purpose, allowing meet-and-greets in the store between customers and makers of UPL products. Through Skype, these interactive sessions will bring customers together with the wine makers, craft beer brewers and

UPL is one of three companies owned by Adam’s family; all three entities are actively involved in the Broad Ripple Village Association and neighborhood activities. UPL was founded in 1964 by Adam’s grandfather, Leon Riggs. In 1969, Mr. Riggs began LOR Corporation, a commercial real estate company that now owns the Broad Ripple Station Shopping Center. In 2005, Mr. Riggs started the not-for-profit United Hope Foundation as the company’s way to give back to the local community. Since that time, the United Hope Foundation has provided more than $1,250,000 to local individuals, families, and nonprofit organizations. United Hope Foundation puts on two events in Broad Ripple each year, the Indy Wine and Beer Fest and Indy’s Boofest. Through Indy’s Boofest 2012, United Hope Foundation donated $4,000 to BRVA which has been earmarked for public safety.
