mario@broadripplegazette.com National Moto + Cycle Co. (NMC) co-owner Matty Bennett’s trek into bicycling has crossed paths with history and design. “I’ve always been into bicycles. I’ve done a lot of BMX racing growing up and the pro downhill racing circuit with National Off-Road Bicycle Association (NORBA). Back then, there were a lot more sponsorships. I worked at bike shops while going through college at Herron School of Art for furniture design. I jumped ship my junior year, doing mural paintings and decorative finishes for designers and companies. I decided to focus on interior design on a full-time basis. We’ve designed restaurants in town and retail spaces. That whole design theme is a through line, a connective path to this business. As a creative rightbrain individual, you always have to be looking for new avenues. It’s been a big full circle transition. Racing became a little stressful, so I started looking at bicycles after a visit to Holland. It reset my white balance (perspective) on how bikes are part of their genealogy and how they operate in the community. We’ve always been sports-oriented on how bicycles can be utilitarian when used in a community. The average trip in the U.S. is about 29 miles by car. It’s important that these generations with kids see bicycles. My heart was telling me a few years ago to come back to bikes,” he explained. His company’s name is part of a historic Indianapolis icon. “National is from National Motor and Vehicle Company from around 1903 until they went into receivership in 1924. The National brand was started by Charles Test, a Woodruff Place resident and Arthur C. Newby. I was introduced to National and their factory at 22nd and Monon Trail. A charter school was located in their number four building. The first factory was building was built in 1903, but the next four buildings were established in 1911. For about two months, it was the largest 5206 N. College Ave. production facility in the United [PP23 on map] States. They built one of the first 6-cycle engines in the country in (317) 698-2418 this factory. A mentor of mine and owner of the factory was Mike www.nationalmoto.com Higbee, when William Hudnut was Mayor when we became the amateur sports capital of the world. He helped develop the Circle Center Mall, Pan Am Plaza and procure the Pan American Games. One direct connection is that he helped with the negotiation between CSX and the city to develop the Monon Trail. Higbee has always taken on the tough projects and bought this factory seven to eight years ago. His company, DC Development, is involved in urban planning and started Martindale on the Monon. He built over 40 homes before that Black Monday in real estate in 2007. Everything slowed down when Mayor (Bart) Peterson wasn’t re-elected and we re-branded the factory as the National Design Factory into condos and loft spaces. It’s a design-driven factory focusing on urban development. Construction on Phase II should begin in the spring/summer of 2013. It’s important that when

National shut down and went into receivership, it sat dormant where it was used for logistics and shipping. When you lose schools, crime increases and in the 1970s, there was a mass exodus of the neighborhood. Higbee and I looked at the factory as a beacon of light for the neighborhood and continuing support for the National Design District. With the factory, we copyrighted the National logo and cleaned it up. That’s why we’re named National Moto + Cycle Company.” Bennett described National’s beginnings: “They built electrobiles from 1897 to 1903 and went full combustion in 1905. They had Thomas Edison ceramic cell batteries. National was an elite group of men and women that won the second Indy 500 with the SX-1 race car in 1912. They were practically stock cars. They took off the back seat and modified the cars with higher performance. The SX-1

New BRVA meeting schedule The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) has changed its public meeting schedule for 2013. Instead of quarterly public meetings, then will be a spring and a fall meeting. The Spring meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 16. The Fall meeting that includes that annual board election will be held on Tuesday, October 15. Monthly BRVA board meetings are still held monthly on the first Tuesday of each month and are open to the public.

still holds the record for the largest cubic engine to win the 500. There are not many National cars found in the USA, about 15-17 today. As World War II hit, National Motor and Vehicle was selected by the government to provide cars to our military overseas to transport officers to the front lines. The peak production for National producing cars was about 2,700 units in 1915. They were a premiere motor company that also built taxis and limousines, but mostly civilian sedans and coupes. Draftsmen were racers and racers were mechanics, their job descriptions were wide open. Joe Dawson, who won the Indy 500 for National in 1912, later became the President of the American Auto Association (AAA). Charlie Merz, a National racer, went on to start Yellow Cab. At the turn of the century and through the 1920s, Indiana had 65+ auto manufacturers from Dusenberg to Marmon, Auburn, Cole and Packard. These are just a few of the automobiles manufactured.” “Unfortunately, they were so prejudiced with two-thirds of our state representatives being in the Klu Klux Klan, they didn’t embrace a diversified workforce. People went to Cleveland and Detroit seeking better opportunities, which accelerated the auto industry’s growth there,” he added. Before National, Bennett cited local businessmen who put Indianapolis on the global map. “In the 1890s, Arthur C. Newby built the Zig Zag Cycle Club here in town and the Newby Oval that was a 15,000 seat velodrome board track located at 30th and Central Avenue, one of the largest of its kind. Bicycles were all the craze then. They were just as important as a family member. People were dressed in their Sunday-best pictured with their bicycle. That’s where Arthur met James Allison, Carl Fisher and Frank Wheeler. They were into bicycling. Arthur also met Charles Test and they started Indianapolis Chain & Stamp Works. That’s where they saw a market and captured over 60 percent of the U.S. bicycle chain market. As they saw

the bicycle craze cool a bit, they sold the company that was later named Diamond Chain and Stamp. They stayed in business together and that’s when they started National and moved into electric cars. In November 1905, after National went full combustion and Fisher had developed the Presto-O-Lite technology, they saw an opportunity to break a 24-hour world record speed for distance. Wheeler, Allison, Fisher and Newby stood around a fire as two National stock cars attempted to break the world record at the Indiana State Fairgrounds that was lit up with Prest-O-Lite. The discussion for a super speedway or proving ground led to the conception of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. One of the cars wrecked, but the other kept on and broke the world record. Spending time with Donald Davidson, he spoke of the quality and craftsmanship at the National factory. In 1911, when the Marmon Wasp won the inaugural Indy 500, they never raced again since they were inundated with civilian sales. This was one of the first times when winning on the track led to civilian sales,” he said. “A.C. Newby was known in the community as the great philanthropist, donating money to Butler University, Riley Hospital and also saved Turkey Run State Park from being developed. He bought houses for people less fortunate. They were handed keys, but never knew the donor," Bennett noted. Visiting NMC’s shop is like walking into a museum. “We’re kind of a mixture of bike production and pre-war racing. With our Motobikes we make a connection between bicycles and early 1900s motorcycles. Some of the bikes are vintage in style, but the technology is new. We are in love with where bicycles became their big brother, the motorcycle. We operate as a midtown urban lifestyle bike shop, by offering commuter and city bike brands and accessories,” he mentioned. “We specialize in uncommon brands of bicycles, such as Vanmoof out of Holland (that integrates solar technology), Pedego electric bikes, Public city bikes, Stromer, a Swiss-design pedal assisted bike, folding bikes, RideKick electric pusher trailers, vintage bicycles and moped consignments. For example, a vintage Schwinn lady’s blue bicycle (from Mac’s Bike Shop on Westfield Avenue in Broad Ripple) made in Chicago is currently available for sale at NMC. It sat in storage for 30 years and is like new with only 920 miles on its odometer,” he described. NMC will be adding several bike lines to the arsenal come springtime. “In doing my Indianapolis Motor Speedway research I found that, technically,

the first race was a balloon race in 1909. The second race was a national motorcycle and race meet, as described on a vintage IMS postcard: “Motorcycles have played an integral part in the rich history of IMS. The first appearance of motorized vehicles at IMS took place on August 14, 1909 with 15 motorcycle races scheduled. After completing only seven of the races, the event was called off due to unsafe track conditions. The results of that weekend led to the installation of 3.2 million bricks, giving the nickname that remains today, ‘The Brickyard.’” NMC’s setting generates both pedestrian and vehicular traffic. “I had a couple of my studios in SoBro before it was a good location. NMC is located in the same spot at 5206 North College Avenue that our former design studio was. The reason I followed my heart back to cycling was that it is a community-driven business focused on a larger purpose, especially designing and producing the Motobikes from conception to the final product for each client. Hand-distressed models have become the new breed of vintage tribute, the NMC Motobike Collection. I’m excited about the future of integrating electrical technology with the gritty profile of the 1900s with sidecar capabilities. That is where I see us heading,” he projected. NMC’s hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. They are closed Monday and open Tuesday by appointment. Bennett co-owns NMC and Indie Bike with Brendan Fox. “Most of our sales for Indie Bike are on-line, but we are putting the ‘bike’ in Indie Bike come springtime. We ship all around the country. We took over in June of 2012 and have big plans for growth on-line and in-store. (The website) www.IndieBike.com started in 2008. We want to grow the on-line platform to facilitate a wider volume of products by introducing the lifestyle and utility brands of NMC into the Indie Bike.com arena,” he emphasized. Bennett mentioned recent NMC ventures. “We have been invited to be in the Orvis catalog in the coming year. We recently delivered our first bikes to their flagship store on 5th Avenue in New York City. In addition, NMC is now

officially licensed to produce a limited edition collection of IMS board racer style bicycles available springtime.” His grandfather, Bertie Bennett used a mechanic’s toolbox now seen in the store among other historic bicycling mementos. Bertie owned an antique shop, a Sunoco station along I-69 and Bennett’s Wrecker Service. His grandson’s mechanical savvy includes repairing and designing bicycles that follow his entrepreneurial footsteps. Matty Bennett and Brendan Fox’s journey of bicycling and design is writing a new chapter in National Moto + Cycle Co.’s history, making a springtime ride a memorable one from their south Broad Ripple location.

Indiana Leaders (Famous and Infamous)

1. This Miami Indian leader handed the United States Army its worst defeat by Native Americans in American history, when his forces killed 600 soldiers in a battle in 1791. 2. This former inmate of the Indiana School for Boys in Plainfield directed his followers to go on a serial-killing rampage in California in 1969. 3. In his book “One World,” this 1940 Republican presidential candidate from Elwood attempted to convince Americans to rethink their isolationist attitude toward the world. 4. 1. This author of the books Freckles and A Girl of the Limberlost was one of the first women to form a motion picture studio and production company. 2. This Broad Ripple-raised architect, known for his post-modern style, received the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal Award in 2001 and has designed buildings such as the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort Hotel and the Indianapolis Art Center. He has also designed appliances and kitchen tools for Target. 3. Widely regarded as the first law of its kind in the world, the state of Indiana created legislation in 1907 allowing the forced sterilization of certain criminals and selected mentally ill who were in the care of the Indiana state hospital system. Deciding who was “fit” or “unfit” to breed, this idea is called what? 4. This self-made female millionaire created a line of hair and beauty products produced in Indianapolis starting in 1910 and sold through sales agents around the United States.

Indiana Athletes

1. This Evansville slugger was a Major League baseball All-Star 6 times and 9 time Gold Glove winner with the New York Yankees, but never won a World Series. 2. This hockey legend attended Carmel High School while playing as 17 year-old for the Indianapolis Racers. 3. The first boxer to win the light heavyweight world championship three times (1979, 1980, and 1986) this Indy native had a professional record of 43 wins (35 by knockout) and 6 losses. He was inducted in the World Boxing Hall of Fame in 2008. 4. This Negro Leagues baseball team based in Indianapolis in the early 1950’s was known for its Harlem Globetrotter style of antic-based playing, yet was a serious contender against other Negro League teams such as the Kansas City Monarchs and Homestead Grays.

If Elvis Presley was still alive he’d be celebrating his 77th birthday. In honor of the King of Rock and Roll’s birthday, Wayne Bertsch hosts an annual concert to celebrate the music of the King. “I wanted to assemble a line-up that reflected the diverse sound that made Elvis a standout even amongst the other giants in the Sun records stable.” This year’s lineup includes as Andra Faye and the Rays, local soul legend Kenny Dodson, and Danny Thompson doing double duty playing with both Bigger Than Elvis and the Danny Thompson Trio. Andra Faye, of Andra Faye and the Rays, was formerly a member of Saffire - the Uppity Blues Women. Saffire won the WC Handy Award for best original blues song in 1990. I can’t wait to hear uber-talented Andra Faye’s take on Presley’s songs. Kenny Dodson has been singing R&B and Soul around Indianapolis for years. His 1970s single “Can’t You Understand” got a lot of spins on WTLC in the day. Most of Elvis’ early albums were R&B tunes remade for a mainstream audience, so Kenny bringing them back to their soulful roots should be a real treat. Danny Thompson is well known to punk fans as Danny Roadkill of the band Sloppy Seconds. This year’s Elvis Birthday Bash marks the first time he’s played sets with both his Bigger Than Elvis line-up and the Danny Thompson Trio. Both play the hot, rockin’ rhythm and blues that made the Sun Records music so dangerous in the minds of 1950s parents.

Annual Events: Record Store Day Saturday, April 20, 2013 Indy CD & Vinyl, LUNA music, Vibes - all-ages, free

This will be the sixth year for Record Store Day, an event created to celebrate independent record stores. According to the Record Store Day website, Indianapolis has seven indie record stores and three of them are in our neighborhood. How cool is that? In the past, Indy CD & Vinyl, Luna music, and Vibes have all participated and I imagine they will this year too. Recording artists produce special offerings (records, CDS, EPs) that can only be sold at the independent stores. In the first year of RSD ten musical artists participated, last year there were over 400. Not only do the stores have the RSD-exclusive music, they host in-store concerts and other activities from artesian craft fairs to cookouts. Record Store Day marks the start of springtime for me. It’s great to see everyone enjoying the day and our neighborhood.

The Broad Ripple Art Fair is typically the weekend after Mother’s Day and this year it falls on my birthday weekend (the 19th, in case you want to mark that on your calendar too). This is the 43rd year for the Art Fair and it keeps getting bigger and better each year. The weekend features over 200 artists, children’s activities, hands-on demonstrations, gourmet food courts, beer gardens, and music on four stages. Truly something for everyone.

54th Street and Monon Art Fair Saturday, June 1, 2013 54th Street and the Monon Trail - all-ages, free

I wasn’t able to confirm the date, but the 54th Street and Monon Art Fair is traditionally on the first Saturday in June, so I feel pretty confident. This is one of my favorite summer traditions. I love that it’s just a short walk up the Monon Trail and the neighborhood vibe of the day. This will be the thirteenth year for the Art Fair – I wonder how many free hotdogs they’ve grilled and how many gallons of lemonade they’ve given away? I always find something great to buy and the music is always wonderful.

If you’ve been reading this column for long you know that I’m an Indiana State Fair geek. If we’ve met you might know that popcorn is my absolute favorite food and that rarely a day goes by without me eating some. At work I’m teased for my popcorn breakfasts. You can imagine my delight when I heard that the Indiana State Fair 2013 will be the Year of Popcorn. Noblesville’s Weaver Popcorn, a family-owned business founded in 1928 is the presenting sponsor. Any wagers on exactly how many quarts of popcorn I’ll consume during the seventeen days of the Fair? There are a few changes in store for this year’s State Fair. There will be no ticketed concerts, but I’m hearing that the free stages will still host music. New for this year – an outdoor ice show -- in August, no less. Rosstyn Ice Shows has been touring the world for nearly 20 years presenting a variety of family-fun shows. They will have four daily performances taking place on the 40-by-40 skating rink in DowAgroSciences Celebration Park (NW side of the Grounds). The rink will be covered by a clear tent and have enough seating for 800 spectators. The shows will feature a number of skaters performing all sorts of stunts that combine music, pageantry, and comedy. Admission is free with paid admission to the Fair. Something else new for the 2013 State Fair is an 8,000 square feet exhibit in the Grand Hall exploring the world of animation. The interactive experience takes visitors back to the classic hand-drawn celluloid animation and brings them to the current day of computer animation. You’ll be able to learn to draw classic characters from an instructor and experience a 3-D Zoetrope that will bring characters to life in a spinning whirl of illusion. I can’t wait!

When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

How to Overcome the "Holiday Blues"

The holidays might seem like a time when worries can be put aside and people can relax, take time off from work and enjoy the season. Unfortunately, this is not the case for many as stress, anxiety and even depression can often take over when the holiday season comes around. When you add everything up, shorter days, financial concerns, loneliness, time pressures, family problems and setting expectations too high can all lead to what many term is the "holiday blues." Seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a type of depression that occurs at the same time every year, can also result in depression and feeling "blue" during the winter months. Some ways to cope with the stress of the holiday season include: Keeping expectations manageable and setting realistic goals, doing something for someone else such as volunteering at a shelter or wrapping an elderly personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s holiday gifts, enjoying activities that are free, spending time with supportive and caring people, saving time for yourself, limiting alcohol consumption. Mental health experts from Midtown Community Mental Health Center, a division of Wishard Health Services, acknowledge that some level of stress is normal during the holidays, but suggest when someone feels overwhelmed for an extended time help should be sought. Chronic stress may be a trigger for certain anxiety disorders and other illnesses. In addition, post-holiday blues can also develop after the hustle and bustle of the holidays subsides and families return to their homes leaving older relatives alone. Symptoms of depression include: loss of enjoyment in daily activities, sleep disruption, loss of appetite, feeling sad or empty, guilt, and even thoughts of dying or suicide. Stress can also be a very serious health issue. Headaches, upset stomach, heart palpitations, and nervousness are all symptoms of stress. Julie Szempruch, a mental health expert and associate vice president for Midtown Community Mental Health Center said that when left untreated, stress can also cause confusion, poor judgment, digestive problems and a suppressed immune system. "It is important for people to take a step back and put things in perspective. This seems to be especially important during the holiday season. With all the news about the economy being in trouble, it might also be wise to cut back and not overextend yourself," Szempruch said. "The holidays are typically seen as this wonderful time to be with family and friends, but when it doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t live up to this, it can result in feeling depressed or overwhelmed." Midtown Community Mental Health Center was established in 1969 as the first mental health center in Indiana. Midtown's philosophy of care stresses strength-based, familyand community-centered treatment. Care decisions are team-based and emphasize family and patient participation. Making connections in this manner can let other people know what career you are interested in. They may know of a hiring manager or company that could be looking for someone with your skills. Over half of today’s jobs are found through networking. There are several local networking groups, like Passport to Employment, (golove.org) which meets Monday evenings from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A faithbased ministry of Church at The Crossing, located at 9111 Haverstick Road, just west of the interstate near the Fashion Mall. Angel Employment Network (wwwsmgonline.org/AEN.htm) meets Tuesday mornings at 7 a.m. at Saint Maria Goretti Church. The Walk Sign Is On In the bright early afternoon light of Guilford Avenue, the gusting wind grabbed an empty red beer-drinking cup and bounced it down the pavement. Each bounce resulted in staccato bonks or skipping clicks or kak, kak, kaks mixed for best effect. That was in my right ear. In my left, the street-crossing timer beat out an enthusiastic ''donk..donk..donk.." as tempo. This went on for one unexpectedly melodic moment. Then I walked out of it, east into the lee of a building, deprived, I remember thinking, wanting to turn and hear the music again. But that red cup had grounded itself on some gravel by the curb and the timer's tempo had stopped to verbally chaperon walkers across the street. The free concert was over. Then I remembered. Sidewalk minstrels often unexpectedly appeared across the street in front of Starbucks and once more there would be music in Broad Ripple. - Larry W. Mitchell

“Re-solve” your New Year Another year has ended (wow that year flew by!), and now we are on the horizon of 2013, and most of us have the best intentions of starting a new good habit, or breaking a bad one…or quite possibly both. However, come March, often much of the steam has disappeared from these goals and can lead to feelings of disappointment and failure, which can result in an unwillingness to make future attempts to change or begin behavior(s). But fear not! There are few strategies you can use to tackle the waning motivation and increase the odds of success. • First, define the “why” do I want to change this behavior, in a healthful approach. And revisit this answer in times that you may be struggling. For example, if it is to lose 20 pounds, focus on how doing so will improve your health and give you more energy, rather than to be able to wear a size 4 jeans. • Make small, yet gradual, changes by setting weekly goals that are attainable and realistic. For example, if you are a couch potato and you want to run the mini, start by aiming to run a mile, then work your way up slowly to a 5K, etc. instead of focusing only on the 13.1 mile race. This way you will feel less overwhelmed and will celebrate your smaller goals along the way. • Use positive rather than negative language when thinking about your resolution. For example, rather than thinking "I can't be bothered going to the gym", think "I always feel so much better for going to the gym and I love that feeling." Emphasizing the benefit to you is far more motivating than focusing on the negative and self-defeating thoughts for not doing it as expected. • Find routine trigger points during your day for implementing your resolution, and plan ahead with how to tackle them when they arise. For example, if you can polish off a box of cookies in one sitting, think about that when you go to the grocery store. And I am not saying that you should never buy a cookie again. In this case I would recommend buying one or two cookies at the bakery instead of the entire box, so you still have what you enjoy without, well, eating the entire box (referring to point #2)! • React to your triggers by replacing them with a healthy alternative. Behavior does not simply go away…but it can gradually be replaced. For example, if after a stressful day at work you typically curl up on the couch with your favorite flavor of Ben N Jerry’s, plan to attend a yoga class or go on a 30 minute walk to clear your mind. • Vocalize your goal and be accountable. Tell someone you hold high in esteem about your plan. As a Personal Trainer, I have seen much success in clients that log a food journal, their workouts and have regular weigh-ins. Knowing someone is “watching” you in a respectful and healthy manner can be a huge key to your success and keep you moving forward. • Lastly, do not beat yourself up if you veer off your path. We cannot control everything in our life; we can only control how we react to it. So, if you have obstacles and struggles, step back and take a look at them and revisit the WHY… and if need be modify ☺

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Celebrating Our Backyards Even I find it hard to believe that I have written more than 150 columns. I began Right in My Own Backyard in November 2004. Writing a bi-weekly “think piece” keeps me attentive to thoughts of the day, the week, the month or the season and then committing them to paper. The column title reflects my having grown up in the Broad Ripple area with many of my childhood memories having been formed in my backyard. This title has given me the latitude to write eclectically about nature, Broad Ripple memories, bird feeding advice, gardening, and recollections of yesteryear. I have interviewed residents and guests of Broad Ripple, my family, and friends, researched at the library and on the internet to gather fodder to write my columns. I have celebrated Broad Ripple by reprinting James Whitcomb Riley’s poem about Broad Ripple. Now I want to share the lyrics to a ‘20s song recorded by notables including Ruth Etting, Al Jolson, Billie Holiday, Patti Page, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Jerry Lewis, and Jimmy Dean. In the midst of its sentiments comes the time-honored phrase “back in your own backyard.” Songwriters Billy Rose, Al Jolson, and Dave Dryer gave us enduring food for thought as they wrote:

I do find joy in my backyard where I can look out and see the future — new growth, new wildlife visitors, new experiences — or I can take a long breath and remember the past — the snows, visions of long-gone dogs, young children playing tag, all now called memories. My wish is that you will take time to reflect on your backyard. Delve into your memories and evoke your visions. Share them with family and friends; invite them to recount theirs in what can be a heart-warming conversation. And, thank you for reading this column.
