Adam and Rhet Lickliter of Little Super at 52nd and College Avenue.

Quality + Style + Affordability = Value. By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Since returning from Europe a few years ago, Indianapolis artist Rhet Lickliter has been thinking a lot about value - and how we practice it in our lives. How we value our time. How we value our work and the money we earn and spend from it. How we value our relationships. How we value the environment and our community. How we value what we choose to care about. In September, Lickliter opened Little Super at 5208 N. College Avenue as an extension of these 5208 N. College Ave. thoughts and considerations [PP23 on map] regarding value. Little (317) 374-5358 Super is a small, but well curated, second-hand store Tuesday - Thursday: 11 am to 7 pm offering quality clothing, Friday - Saturday: 11 am to 9 pm accessories and wares at Sunday: 12 pm to 5 pm very affordable prices. “It isn’t so much about www.little-super.com retail as it is about www.facebook.com/littlesupersobro wanting to be a part of this community, building twitter.com/littlesupersobr relationships and offering something the neighbors can appreciate, enjoy and find worthwhile,” he explained. About a year ago, with no real plan or expectations, Lickliter started buying and building his inventory. He went to flea markets, garage sales and thrift stores. He scoured Craigslist. He traveled to outlying towns and cities: Muncie, Kokomo, Anderson, Mooresville and New Castle. He recently made a trip to the east coast, but when he started buying, he wasn’t sure if or when he would even open a store. “It’s the way I tend to work and function best – organically. But last spring, with my studio full of second hand goods, I realized a retail spot might work. I realized I needed to take the next logical step. So I began to look for an available storefront in the SOBRO (South Broad Ripple) area,” Lickliter said. He feels very fortunate to have landed at the corner of 52nd and College. “I don’t think I could have wound up in a better location. I’m hunkered down between LUNA, National Moto and The Aristocrat. It’s perfect. And it’s where I grew up. I feel at home here.” While the store is new, it feels and looks as if it’s been here a long time. Lickliter worked on the interior for almost three months before opening - and he’s still working on it. The original wooden floors have been exposed. The clothes racks are built from raw 2x4s and dowel rods; there is a sitting area with a couch and a

Experience exhibit, is an area in the museum with large touch screen displays that allow visitors to explore the history of each county in Indiana. Recently, the scope of the project was increased to include neighborhood histories. Broad Ripple Village was lucky to be one of the first neighborhoods to be included. Here is a bit of background on how that happened... Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) board member Tom Healy visited the Destination Indiana exhibit in the Indiana Experience gallery at the Indiana Historical Society with his wife, Elsa Kramer. She had just taken a tour with her students, and hoped that Broad Ripple could have a video "journey" included. After enjoying the interactive exhibit, Tom agreed that it has great value in teaching Indiana history. Healy, who serves as president of the Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress, the BRVA's 501(c)(3) fund-raising arm, said, "When we learned that IHS wanted to include neighborhoods as part of the digital journeys in Destination Indiana, we thought it would be a great way to commemorate Broad Ripple's 175th anniversary. And thanks to the generosity of Bruce and Julie Buchanan and Richard Vonnegut, who underwrote production costs, and members of the BRVA's Committee for Historic Broad Ripple — especially Alice Roettger and Alan Hague — Broad Ripple became the first neighborhood video in the exhibit." Destination Indiana includes several seating areas with large-screen touchsensitive displays in a darkened room in the Indiana Experience section of the museum. Visitors choose their own journey by spinning the images on the screen to select a region of the state. Under the Central Indiana region, Neighborhood

Touch-screen panels allow visitors to select stories on all portions of the state.

Journeys can be found. Touching that icon displays an icon for Broad Ripple Village. The presentation on the story of Broad Ripple Village starts. Visitors can stop the presentation and move back and forth through it at their own pace,

Randy King Saturday, January 19 Big Mike’s Café Americana 9611 N. College Avenue - 7:30 pm, all-ages

You might remember Randy King from playing with his band, The Positions, at Crazy Al’s on College Ave back in the “skinny tie” days of the early 1980s. Or you may have seen him more recently playing as Randy King and The New Positions. Randy is a great songwriter – smart wordplay and fun music. This will be a rare chance to see Randy play a solo set. He is promising to play a bunch of songs that he likes but never had the guts to do, and a healthy dose of his own songs. You won’t want to miss this. And you can eat delicious pizza while you’re hanging out with the cool kids.

Souper Bowl Saturday, January 26 Second Helpings 1121 Southeastern Ave - 11:30 am – 2:00 pm, all-ages, $5 (5 years-old and under free)

Full disclosure – I’m lucky enough to be the Director of Programs for the amazing nonprofit agency, Second Helpings. We’re showing off our wonderful facility, showing off local ceramic artists and talented chefs.

The Spirtles started in 1978 as four friends that enjoyed playing and were influenced by the Grateful Dead and psychedelic music. They infused their own material and grew quite a following, both locally and across the country. The original line up; James Booth, Rick Freeman, Joseph Huber, and Tim Cooper were joined by other musicians over the years as the band grew, including Greg Ziesmer. The Spirtles have not played together for a decade. James Booth is visiting from his home in Wyoming and the time is right for a reunion show. And quite a show it will be – there will be beer and wine available (don’t forget your ID) and food vendors. The lineup is: 7:00 – Joseph Huber and Jim Callahan Next – Greg Ziesmer and Kriss Luckett And then – James Booth and Rick Freeman will kick off the show, and will be joined by the rest of the Spirtles. This promises to be a fun and twirly-dancy evening.

coffee table. A small kitchen has been exposed and serves as the checkout area. Many of the housewares are what might be called ‘vintage’ – but Lickliter doesn’t like that descriptor applied to his merchandise. “I’ve always been attracted to things of quality and things that seem to speak of their history. It just so happens things used to be made better – made to last and work for a long time. So I’ve wound up with a lot of items from some years past, but they all work. I’m into sturdy, well-designed, functional items when it comes to what I surround myself with,” he described. While Little Super is primarily a second-hand clothing store, it does offer some great rescued household items: toasters, blenders, irons, movie projectors, cameras, vintage paperbacks, ghetto blasters and lots of dishes, cups and glassware. Little Super’s hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and closed on Monday. Pictures of store items are at www.little-super.com and inquiries can be answered at 374-5358. The store’s moniker has a special story behind it. “The name Little Super comes from a country store my cousin Coy, who is like my brother, and I used to walk to when I was visiting him when we were boys. We bought candy and soda to eat and drink as we walked back to his house. It was called Mr. Ed's Little Super. It was in an old clapboard house at a crossroads out in the country near Mooresville. It holds great memories for me,” he recalled. Little Super also stocks a small inventory of military-issue goods such as wool blankets, gloves, duffel bags, satchels and even canteens. “I was really sorry to see Brooks Army Navy leave the corner at 54th and College. I went there a lot – mostly for the wool blankets. So I decided to try

and at least partially fill the void at Little Super. I hope to increase my military inventory over time. The quality is great,” Lickliter emphasized. Aside from the few years he spent living and traveling in Europe, Lickliter has been a lifelong resident of the Indianapolis and the Broad Ripple area. He fondly remembers playing basketball at the Optimist Club, riding his bike to Lobraico's Rexall Drug Store for an ice cream and buying his girlfriend perfume at Moorman’s on the canal. In high school and college he worked at Hardwicke's Pipe and Tobacco. “I had my first legal beer at The Red Key. I grew up and went to school with the Settles (owners of the Red Key) – so it only made sense. I used to buy my records at Second Time Around. It was our original used record store,” he mentioned. Music seems to be an important component of Little Super. Lickliter plays a

lot of jazz over his stereo in the store. It mixes well and adds to the relaxed atmosphere he’s created. “My grandparents were jazz musicians. My Grandmother played piano in a lot of clubs and remembered well the scene on Indiana Avenue. Her husband was from Chicago and was an accomplished trumpet and vibe player. There is a lot of musical talent in my family that was passed down. I didn’t get any, but I certainly developed an appreciation. I didn’t really have a choice. My mother played and sang along to artists like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra most days while she worked in our home when I was growing up. I’m still listening to the greats: Bill Evans, Miles, Coltrane. I really enjoy current artists, like Portishead, as well. I guess it’s the one drawback from being 15 steps from the best record store in the Midwest. I spend a lot of money on music.” While Lickliter may not have inherited any musical talent, he did develop his artistic skills as a visual artist. He has, and continues, to exhibit and sell his paintings and collages. He has work in private collections throughout the U.S. and Europe. A few of his pieces hang in Little Super and several of his works are currently on display in SOBRO Café. “Since the economy took a hit in 2008, a lot of the local, contemporary galleries shut down. I hope to eventually use Little Super as a venue for art-related exhibits and experiences. I would like to offer the walls to local artists, have open mic nights; perhaps show locally produced films and performances. I hope to stage arguments as well.” Currently, Little Super is displaying collages by David Mattingly and a large encaustic painting by Jon Black. Lickliter reflected, “It will be great if the second hand goods can cover the overhead so the art can be displayed and sold with no pressure. That would be the icing on the second hand cake.”

Eight Broad Ripple Collector pins now available! See all 8 pins in the set in color at www.broadripplegazette.com or at Chelsea's (902 Westfield Boulevard)

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Following the program, the IPS Crispus Attucks Museum, located at the high school, will present an award-winning video documentary and discussion on the life and legacy of Dr. King. Both programs are free and open to the public. IPS schools and district offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 21 in observance of the national holiday. However, the Crispus Attucks Museum will be open from noon – 5p.m. on King Day for tours.

Four IPS Schools Involved In Clothing Collection Initiative

Four Indianapolis Public Schools are collecting clothes for Goodwill as part of a pilot community service project. Students at Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities, Gambold Preparatory High School, Sidener Academy and Arsenal Tech High School are participating in the first-year project. “Community service projects offer a tremendous opportunity for our students to learn about being involved, in helping others. Goodwill and IPS are pleased to partner in this initiative. We know many of our school family’s benefit from the many services offered by Goodwill. This gives us a chance to give back,” said IPS Superintendent Dr. Eugene G. White. Through the end of this month, the schools will collect clothing and household goods and take them to one of the many Goodwill stores in the community. Each time a donation is made in the name of one of the participating schools, the school will receive credit. The school with the most donations at the end of the month will receive special recognition from Goodwill. Anyone can support this effort by making donations in the name of any of the four participating IPS schools. For more information, contact the IPS Office of School and Community Relations at 226-4649.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 7 in the right section of the bottom row which contains 2-3-5-8. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the space below the 2. The 7 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the 3 spaces in a column to the left of the 2-3. The only place left is directly above the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Another good reason to seek and find wines that win medals in wine competitions, rather than just relying on a wine critic whose tastes might not be similar to yours, and thus a wine they give a 92 and think is outstanding, you may hate. MORE numbers! I spent the week in charming Cloverdale, California, a town that reminds me of the TV series Northern Exposure. Day one started with a red carpet welcome for the judges. Literally. This contest started in 1970 as a small competition among local wineries. This year it once again racked up an impressive number of entries from all over the US. So our hosts decided to roll out the red carpet with a glass of bubbly to welcome us. My panel of 3 judged Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs on day one. About 100 total. Chardonnays and Zinfandels on day two. Just over 100 that day. And Pinot Grigio's and Ports on day three. 64 Pinot Grigios and 43 ports. SPITTING is the key to survival by day but savoring is the theme of the night. Day one, Tuesday is always a grand day. From the red carpet welcome to the homemade lunches to the easy going extra tasty BBQ dinner held at SFC Organizer Bob Fraser's home. It's always my favorite day. BBQ'd oysters filled with butter and chopped garlic were happily slurped and an array of wines were offered for judges to sample and SWALLOW with dinner that nite. Tri-tip, salad, potatoes, bread and a decadent caramel apple pie ( I am STILL swooning from that slice of heaven!) were on the menu along with time to relax and talk with fellow judges from all over the country. Friends and colleagues I have known for almost 13 years. So we couldn't let the nite end after the meal. We had to head to La Hacienda, a Mexican restaurant in Cloverdale that is a real hole in the wall with outstanding margaritas and platters of nachos. Cheers to the years of friendship. Each morning I woke early and took a mind calming walk thru the town that is nestled among mountains and creeks and rivers. The smells of wild growing lavendar, sage, olive trees, citrus trees fill the air as the morning fog creeps in. It is a visual and aromatic up lifting way to start your day. Day two's evening outing was the annual winemakers dinner hosted this year by DeLoach. This well known winery was bought several years ago by the Boisset Family of Burgundy, France. The Boisset's own dozens and dozens of wineries in France and with many new acquisitions in California they are creating a true world wine empire. 43 year old Jean Charles Boisset is the ring leader of the Boisset wine circus which features wines in all price ranges and styles. De Loach Winery in Sonoma County has a storied and rich history turning out outstanding vintages for years while owned by Cecil De Loach. Boisset bought the property in 2004 and started ripping up the vineyards to make them all biodynamic. This system relies on the cycles of nature and requires certification from the Demeter group. Its a big endeavour but nothing is TOO big for the Boisset clan. Jean Charles welcomed us to the barrel room with bubbles and appetizers and a Burgundian style "clapping song" that probably made more sense once one had consumed several glasses of wine but was all in good fun. We left the barrel room and went into the newly designed guest house, which is more like a guest manor. Floor to ceiling windows and tables set with multiple glasses and candles created a warm, inviting, elegant atmosphere for the food and wine to come. Wines sampled included the JCB 21 Cremant Bourgogne, the crisp, refreshing, rich bubbly. The JCB Chardonnay, oaky and buttery. Raymond Napa Valley Reserve Chardonnay, lush and rich. Raymond Napa Valley Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, fruity and smooth. Buena Vista "The Count", an EZ drinking red blend. DeLoach O.F.S. Pinot Noir, earthy and young. And the JCB 3 Pinot Noir, a pricey mix of old and new world style. The menu included a Sting Ray Ballotinne (a layered fish pate), Fingerling Potato Salad, Buffalo Cheeks and Venison Loin (!!) with Truffle Sauce, Celeriac Mashed Potatoes, Farro with Wild Mushrooms, and a Cold Hazelnut Souffle Opera Cake. Our judges reunion continued that night when we got back to the hotel and a dozen "wine geeks" gathered to share more conversation, stories, plus some harmonica and guitar playing. And wine. The SFC folks give each judge a "goody bag" when we arrive. Inside is a bottle of wine and an assortment of salty and sweet snacks to keep our energy up during the week ( the blueberry-pomegranate KIND bar is SO tasty). So each of us brought our bottle, opened it, and shared. Day 3 was bittersweet. I would leave early the next morning and thus miss the final round of sweepstakes judging so I had to say goodbye early to my

My glass of Italian white wine and a plate of perfectly grilled, tender smoky Calamari on a bed of fresh arugula and white beans with a lemon-olive oil dressing made for a divine ending to my week of wine, food and friends. by Susan Smith

Like many, I have been fighting the flu. I have found it a good time to catch up on reading my trade magazines. As a pet retailer, I get three a month. They pile up…three becomes six, six becomes nine, nine becomes a chore. I feel I need to read them to stay on top of what you, the consumer, is doing (shopping on smart phones, big box or hopefully local); what my industry is lobbying (puppy mills, internet sales tax, credit card swipe fees, Main Street fairness); what my manufacturers are introducing (foods, toys, shampoos) and updates on trade shows I attend (Chicago, Las Vegas, Orlando). While it is a chore to read them all at once, I find I have friends in those pages. I read the same columnists every issue and I have learned their passions and their personalities. One in particular, Dave Ratner, I gravitate to. He’s funny, witty and smart. I have resorted to emailing him for counsel on occasion. From his award winning monthly columns and the success of his independent Massachusetts stores, he has risen in the trade and is now on the board of directors of the National Retail Federation. He tells of meeting in Washington with CEOs of Macys, Neiman Marcus, Saks, BJs Wholesale Club and the Home Shopping Network. He says it is a thrill for a small business guy like him to hang out with some titans of industry and that actually he is the popular guy since he is the only pet person. (Don’t I always say pets make you smile?) It is a new year and my first column for 2013. Perhaps some of you are new readers of The Broad Ripple Gazette. I have been on board here for five years or so. The columnists here have their own unique passions and personalities and like my literary friend Dave Ratner and me, many of them are also small business owners. They live and/or work in the Broad Ripple area. I know them all because I am a faithful reader and have gotten to know them through their writings. I know them personally because our editor, Alan, annually brings us together for a holiday gathering to thank us for our volunteer contributions to the paper. Let me introduce you. Mario Morone: Mario works the hardest of all of us but has the easiest job. How is that so? The rest of us agonize about what we will write about. We run out of ideas and suffer from brain drain. We have to become creative and we wait until the last minute to meet deadline. We drive Alan nuts (or maybe that’s just me). But Mario is the man who has it dropped onto him. Every new business that opens, entrepreneurs, school events, Village Association stories – he’s on it. But that means he can’t work in his pajamas. He’s got to meet people and do interviews. Pictures have to be taken and he has to get it right. His column is not about opinions and commentary. He’s the fact guy. He’s the reason I read the Gazette. I want to know what’s going on here. Nora Spitznogle: Nora is the social butterfly, or bee that is. She writes the column Buzzing Around Town and boy does she. She makes me dizzy. She covers all the local music happenings and previews events around BR Village. Think about it. Nearly everything happens in BR so she is one busy lady. She has so much to write about that she usually takes a two page spread. She has become a VIP and gets to go behind stage to interview some great entertainment. She thrives on it. She is the director of the not-for-profit Second Helpings. Under her watch that organization has made giant strides and has gained much deserved publicity. She is amazing. I am in her awe. C.W. Pruitt II: C.W. is a throw back from the past. He is our hippy poet guy. As poets go sometimes you have to be a deep thinker to fully understand their art. He throws out all kinds of subjects, many about what have impressed him in his life. You got to love C.W. even if you don’t always understand him. He’s

www.broadripplegazette.com the contributor who leaves me wanting more. I’d like to get to know him better. Laura Minor: Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple is Laura’s column. She is a bright, pretty, fit woman. She owns So.Be.Fit Personal Training and Fitness Studio. I first met her when I became a client at her studio. I went weekly for about a year. I need to get back at it – it is a new year, after all. Read her column to inspire you to new beginnings. She is bubbly and passionate about good health. Her success led her to upsizing her studio which is located at the 54th Street Shops. Brandt Carter: Brandt is the one I can relate most to. We are the same age, we have lived and loved BR our whole lives and we could be historians for the community. We remember the same things and that is fun. She tells of her memories and brings you back to the times that were in her column Right in my Own Backyard. She is a nature lover and is an owner of Backyard Birds located at 54th & Keystone. Her column often centers us on the joys of nature and the pleasure of focusing on the small things in life. If you want to raise city chickens, she’s your go-to gal. She truly has a fabulous backyard. Jill Ditmire: Since I am supposed to be focused on the pet theme for my column I have saved introducing Jill last. She writes The Wine Scene. She calls herself the Broad of Ripple. She is a specialist who is an AWS-certified wine judge, traveling for her job to California and Europe. She owns a fabulous store called Mass Ave Wine Shoppe located where else but Massachusetts Avenue. I credit opening my second store on Mass Ave. to Jill. I went down to meet her in person, liked the location and was told by her that the store two doors down from her was closing. I moved in within three weeks. We have become good friends. I have been advising her on what to feed her senior dog as he has slipped into the inevitable decline of old age. We have tried many foods to keep him enticed. Until January 6th I did not know the full scope of her writing skills. On that date she sent me and our editor a lengthy epitaph of her dog Harp who had passed the day before. It was sad, warm, witty and touching. She emailed me again with her toast to the New Year that we should all make…… “We also made a pact tonight to live life like a dog - full on, with naps, treats, walks and as much unconditional love as we can give and take. Want to raise a glass and join that toast? Peace to all!” Rest in peace Harp. Love to you Jill. You were a great dog mama. Susan Smith is a life-long area resident and is the owner of City Dogs Grocery located at 52nd and College and at 884 Massachusetts Avenue. Every New Year brings its own array of fitness gadgets and diets with their promises of being THE new thing sure to change your weight and life forever. Most of which simply fade into the diet and fitness Bermuda triangle only to be seen when cleaning out the closet for Goodwill. Of course, being in this industry, I love to investigate each new claim and product and formulate my own opinion of its benefits and longevity. Today I want to take a look at the book entitled The 8 Hour Diet by David Zinczenko. In a nutshell, the former Men's Health editor and co-author of other bestsellers, including The Abs Diet and Eat This, Not That! series, suggests cutting back eating hours to just eight a minimum of three days a week for guaranteed weight-loss results. What you eat within the eight hour window is entirely up to you. For example, if you want to eat an entire pizza, and a bag of chips; great. The caveat, however, is the minute your eight hours is up, you are to fast for the following 16 hours. Their “theory” in this is that during the fasting phase, your body will digest the immediate food sources and then shift into fat burning mode. The book also suggests to exercise for 8 minutes before you begin the 8 hour feeding period. My take: • First and foremost, any diet that says you can eat anything you want and lose weight “without trying” makes me suspicious. Yes, you may lose weight initially following this program (or not depending on how much of worthless food you truly do eat); the idea behind this simply promotes our vanity approach to weight loss and not true health. And, once your 8 hour window eventually expands since would be very hard to maintain, you could form bad habits and dependency on poor food choices. • It is quite unrealistic given our average lifestyle. For example, if you eat anything around a typical breakfast time say 9:00am, you are to eat nothing after 5:00pm. So, if you are having a hectic week at work and have to work through lunch and until after 6:00pm, well, better put Domino’s on speed dial and grab a roll of paper towels while finishing your project! Therefore, this program promotes skipping breakfast unless you want to have dinner before returning home from work…neither of which, I feel, is healthy or easy to maintain long term. Think about it, it would be pretty challenging and a bit awkward to make and serve your family dinner while sipping on water. • It could slow down your metabolism and make you quite crabby. Once your body realizes that you will not be eating for the next 16 full hours, it is going to retaliate by burning calories more slowly during the fasting phase. Your metabolism reacts to the changes you make, and will slow or speed up according to blood sugar levels, hydration, vitamins and minerals, and fiber. And once you abandon this plan, your metabolism will have a lag time to speed back to its original level which could result in weight gain. • It devalues exercise and your heart. This program says to exercise just 8 minutes a day to promote further fat loss. What about getting the recommended 30 minutes a day for cardiovascular health? However, those that truly adhere to this 8 hour window may not even have enough energy to exercise much more than a very short period of time. If you ARE an avid exerciser, I would not recommend this plan. You may either eat your hand off, or end up with no friends  • It doesn’t account for those with eating disorders. Many people have an unhealthy relationship with food such as bulimia and chronic overeaters. This program would likely be a disaster for this population for many obvious reasons. In summary, I am going to be redundant in regards to past articles I have written on diets. Eat more fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and fiber. Eat less high fat, high sugar and processed foods. Watch portion sizes, and drink 60-90 oz. of water a day. The sooner we accept that a healthy diet truly goes back to these basics, the better off we will be. Remember any “diet” that promises guaranteed results without even trying sounds nice…and this is why the author makes a ton of $ off of it; but it is probably not going to provide long or even short term results. List making is one of my compulsions. Go to the grocery—make a list; get ready for the work week—make a list; entertain—make a list; go on a trip—make a list. I think making a list instead of New Year’s resolutions works for me. So I launched into this new year by making my list for 2013. It enumerates good TIPS (To Improve Personal Satisfaction in the year ahead). You might want to try one or two of the ideas or even make your own list. 1. Write notes. People enjoy being remembered the old fashioned way; don’t rely simply on e-mail. It’s easier to tuck a written note in a book or drawer so it can be reread months or years later. Have you sent a thank you for any gifts received this holiday season? How about just a note for the sake of a note to a family member or friend to recall a golden moment or express warm regards? 2. Take time to share a story or let conversation include listening to a story, stories enrich our lives. 3. Try something new in the January… a new restaurant, a new book, movie or play. 4. Support local retailers. Aim to buy local each week and tell a friend where you shop. 5. Visit one Indianapolis landmark this month. We do have gems here in the city. 6. Deliver a flower or sweets to a neighbor. 7. Clean out a drawer or closet. Send the leftovers to Goodwill. 8. If you feed the birds, add a peanut feeder to your yard. Birds love the shelled peanuts and stay at the feeder longer to pull out a morsel. Don’t forget heated birdbaths on these frigid days. 9. Turn the tables and thank your boss for your paycheck. They like to know you appreciate your job. 10. Read the history of Broad Ripple so you understand our community forefathers and your roots. www.broadripplehistory.com/ or polis.iupui. edu/RUC/Neighborhoods/BroadRipple/BRNarrative.htm (We will also reprint this in an upcoming Gazette series) 11. Send a Broad Ripple Gazette to a friend who has moved away. They will enjoy seeing what’s up. 12. Celebrate! Take note of as many holidays as you can. Make them a special occasion by creating appropriate menus, decorations, gifts, and traditions. 13. Wish as many people a “Happy New Year” as you can …even until the end of the month. After you read these TIPS, you can surmise that keeping positive thoughts and actions punctuate this new year with fulfilling moments. If you can keep the momentum going past January, I bet your year will reach new levels of personal satisfaction. In addition, if you make your own list, share it with someone. Encourage a friend or your family to make a list too. Happy New Year! Here’s to Lists! Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Welcomemat Services Meet Julie McCord, franchise owner of Welcomemat Services. Julie and her company specialize in helping small business grow by connecting them with new customers who are highly likely to be loyal to local businesses: new families in the community. These critical connections are made through a monthly welcome package full of gift certificates to local businesses. “Today’s lifestyles are so fast-pace, people don’t have time to drive around aimlessly searching for great businesses, especially new families who are unfamiliar with the community. Our welcome package brings businesses to them and invites them in.”, says Julie. Welcomemat has been serving local businesses in the Broad Ripple area for over a year now, with great results for clients such as Flatwater Restaurant, 3 Sisters Café, Good Earth Natural Food Company and many others. “Our passion is to promote small local businesses and help them grow. Of course our welcome package does exactly that, but we’ve also had fun finding creative ways to promote and support our clients in other ways as well.” Welcomemat offers businesses exclusive categories in their welcome package, giving your business an edge over your competitors. Businesses interested in learning more about how to grow with the Welcomemat program should contact Julie directly at (317) 418-2865.

Julie of Welcomemat Services in front of Flatwater Restaurant.

Julie and her husband, Matthew, have been operating Welcomemat Services for a year and a half. They work specifically with small businesses because that’s their passion. “When people say they get home sick, they don’t actually miss their home, they miss the relationships they used to have. People are attracted to Broad Ripple because of the feeling they get. There is no place like Broad Ripple for local and independent businesses and relationships.” “I love Broad Ripple. I am from Chicago, so for me growing up, everything was super local. When we moved to Indianapolis, we moved into Fishers and it doesn’t have the local, independent feel that I was used to.” Another aspect of Broad Ripple living that Julie really appreciates is that it is familyfriendly. “My kids know that there is a place and space for them here. They get to run around on the Monon Trail and get ice cream at brics.”
