mario@broadripplegazette.com Longtime Broad Ripple resident Adam Price and his wife Trinia are blazing a musical trail with their diverse band Naptown Boogie, covering a repertoire of rhythm & blues, top 40, pop, dance, soul and classic rock from the 1960s to present day music. Their set list includes songs from across the musical spectrum. “We play a lot of complex music, from Blood Sweat & Tears to Sade or a James Bond medley to Led Zeppelin, anything out there is fair game when it comes to this band and we add horns to everything! We played 51 shows in 2012, all high profile top end clubs, casinos and private events. Half the band reads music and half the band plays by ear. When it comes time to tweak a song, it makes great audio, having trained and untrained musicians, combining jazz, rock and classical musicians together is quite a concoction. It’s a fantastic mix of structure and improvisation,” Price explained. “We cover a tenth of what other local bands are playing. Audiences have really embraced it. Yes, we play the hits,” Price noted, “just not the same hits as our competitors ….why go see a band play the same set list as everyone else? It makes absolutely no sense to me.” Price was born into a musical family and took to drumming at an early age. “I was the founding member of a Led Zeppelin Tribute band called ‘Evermoore’ which was together for 15 years and toured all over the country. I shared the stage once each with David Clayton Thomas and Joe Cocker. I also toured with 3 Dog Night’s lead singer Chuck Negron for six weeks when I was hired as his drummer back in ’96 or ’97,” he recalled. Naptown Boogie is composed of Adam Price, band leader/drums. His wife Trinia is a long-time alumna of the Indy music scene. She is the female lead singer and flute player and in Adam’s opinion is one of the best front persons in the Midwest. In the past, she has been in such notable bands as: “Dr. Bop & Headliners, Rock Doll and founding member of Trinia & the Gypsies. She sang the National Anthem for the Indy 500 in 2005 and at the RCA Championships in the same year. Paul Schafer and Neil Broeker play alto and tenor saxophones, respectively. Neil formerly toured with the 5th Dimension and Paul appeared in a recording session with the Coasters and has spent 20 years with his other gig, Roadhouse. Chris Brown on trumpet performs with the Indianapolis Wind Symphony. Eric Evans, also on trumpet, toured with George Clinton and P-Funk. Bassist Leo Thompson has worked with Koko Taylor, Ronnie Mack, Roadmaster, Johnny Winter, Albert Collins and B.B. King. He has also worked on the soundtrack and was an extra in the movie Beautiful Dreamer. “I also have a keyboard player from Chicago by the name of Todd Brown who just joined us and he is fantastic! He was the longtime keyboardist in the band R-Gang - they were voted best R&B group in Chi town 12 years running and

Westfield Boulevard will be closed on or after February 18, 2013, between College Avenue and Broadway Street for the construction of storm sewers, curbs and sidewalks. The closure will last approximately 28 days. We’re the only band in town covering this much diverse material, including: Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago, Kool & the Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Steely Dan, Tower of Power, Marvin Gaye, Sade, Peter Gabriel, Joe Cocker and Sting, to name just a few of dozens we perform,” Price noted. Price discussed the band’s current project: “We are working on a new promotional video with the Glass Eye Group from Zionsville. They filmed us at Latitude 39 with multiple cameras. Glass Eye usually works with musical artists outside Indiana and abroad. They do, however, work with local corporations and businesses which include commercials and presentations, they’ve set a new standard in video production and we’re going to be a part of it.” An April 6th video shoot featuring 10 songs is planned to provide Naptown Boogie greater exposure. Their appearance at the Palladium’s amphitheater in Carmel for a Humane Society fundraiser last August caught the attention of Jill Purcell, who is the assistant to the president of WTHR Channel 13 and consequently landed them the gig as entertainment for the station’s Christmas party at IMS Pavilion, which was one of Naptown Boogie’s high points for last year. They also played at the Columbus Arts Council on the grounds of the state courthouse last September before 4,000 people. These events have broadened the band’s growing audience. Prime Source Entertainment in Nashville, Tennessee is also interested in booking Naptown Boogie for multiple events, “We work with all of the major agencies as well as book ourselves,” Price said, which is another aspect of the band that he is involved in. Their next scheduled shows are March 15 at Britton Tavern in Fishers and March 22-23 at Aztar Casino in Evansville, where they will play for the sixth time on a stage that has graced dozens of national acts. This summer, they return to Bella Vita’s on the marina (a personal favorite of the band’s) for multiple dates at Geist Reservoir starting June 1st. The Strugglers are part of Indianapolis music history. Jack Clarke, Dave Langfitt, Joe Langfitt, Kevin Hughey, Stanley Smith, and Scott Ballantine started playing together in 1969. Their sound was unique; a mix of roots rock, country, blues, and jazz. They were the house band at The Hummingbird (now Birdy’s) and the Patio (now LAVA). Stanley moved to Austin, TX in the late 1980s, and the band now only plays when Stanley is in town. Lucky us – he’ll be here for the show. Andra Faye is a real-life cover girl. Her beautiful self is on the cover of Mandolin Magazine. They The Strugglers crowned Andra the “First Lady of Blues Mandolin.” You might know Andra from her long-time stint in Saffire – The Uppity Blues Band. She’s now living in Indianapolis and has surrounded herself with a talented band. Andra Faye and The Rays are always a delight. Rounding out the evening is the talented Randy King and The New Positions. Randy is an excellent songwriter and I promise you’ll be bopping along to his songs. I got to see the Flea Bitten Dawgs the last time they were in town and I fell in love with them. Thom Pallozola and David Henry Spangler make up the ukulele duo. Yes, I said ‘ukulele duo.’ Voted “Best Old Band” in St. Louis in 2011, the Dawgs put their unique musical touch on jazz and rock favorites and are excellent songwriters. As a special treat, they’ll be joined by North Carolina percussionist, Lee Kram. The show is house concert style. Feel free to bring a dish for the pitch-in and your own drinks. Corps holds Indy North levee public open house By Martin Chittum
martin@broadripplegazette.com On February 7, from 5pm-7pm, the Indianapolis Department of Public Works, together with the US Army Corps of Engineers (Louisville District) held a public open house regarding the ongoing Indy North Levee project at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, located at 6050 N. Meridian. Representatives from the Department of Public Works and the Corps of Engineers were there to give information and answer questions regarding “Phase IIIB” of the Flood Damage Reduction Project. The intention of this project is to eventually provide “300 Year” flood protection from the White River to areas that are now considered at risk of flooding. The location of this stage of the project will be along the White River, between Kessler Boulevard on the north, and the Riviera Club on the south. The earthen levee will be 11 feet high, 75 feet wide, with a 12 foot crown. The project will have negligible effect on traffic in the area during construction. In some instances, this will be replacing inadequate levees which are already existing. Diagrams showing the visible height of the levee at various addresses along its path were on display. This project has met with some controversy because of the perceived lack of protection, and possible increased chance of flooding, to the Rocky Ripple neighborhood. Carol Labashosky of the Corps of Engineers addressed these concerns for residents of Rocky Ripple who still worry about the impact of this project. She stressed that this is an ongoing project of several phases with the end goal of flood protection for the entire affected area, including Rocky Ripple. Flood protection won't be fully realized until the levee is hydraulically connected to high ground at both ends. It is acknowledged that it will be some time in the future before this goal can be achieved. Availability of funding was cited as one of the reasons for the slow pace of the project. Residents of Rocky Ripple also expressed their concern that the ongoing construction may increase the chance of severe flooding in their neighborhood. By law, the Corps of Engineers cannot willingly do anything that would have a negative impact on the status quo of the neighborhood's current state. This was communicated to the residents, but they still seemed skeptical, citing a perceived increase in flooding in recent years which they believe may have been caused by various other unrelated constructions which have taken place upstream. Ms. Labashosky acknowledged that while it may be possible unrelated construction have affected floodwaters, she assured that the Corps of Engineers has taken every precaution to ensure their work has no negative impact on the neighborhood or the environment. If you regularly read my column you know I have a passion for three topics: veterans, pets and shopping local. So let’s tackle two of the three in one swoop – vets and pets. I missed seeing the New Year’s day Rose Parade on TV. Later I read in business publications that Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods long-standing tradition of having a float in the parade took it to another level. This year their float honored military dogs who risk their lives everyday protecting their handlers. The floral float, named CANINES WITH COURAGE, featured a replica of the new Working Dog Teams National Monument with dogs and handlers from every military service branch riding on it alongside the designer John Burnam, a Viet Nam veteran military dog handler. Burnam, who received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Purple Heart said of his dog…. “He saved my life and saved the lives of others by alerting on ambushes, snipers and booby traps. I wanted to give something back to these animals that have done so much and asked for so little, except for food and water and the love of their handlers.” Sculptor of the National Monument, Paula Slater, has depicted a Doberman, German Shepherd, Labrador Retriever and Belgian Malinois, all breeds used in wars. They are represented with a bronze handler standing more than 9 feet tall and weighing 1,500 pounds. Each dog is about 5 feet tall and weighs 550 pounds. The figures will stand on a pedestal with the words ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, COAST GUARD, MARINES. It will soon be in place at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio. The location was chosen as the site for the monument because that’s where most of the nation’s military dogs are trained. Legislation authorizing establishment of the monument was introduced in 2007, signed in 2008 by President George W. Bush then amended and signed by President Barack Obama. To raise funds for the monument and its maintenance, Natural Balance pledged more than one million dollars and created a jerky bark treat sold by Petco. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Central Indiana Wilderness Club will present a FREE backpacking class, which is open to the public, on Saturday, March 9th from 9:30 AM until 1:30 PM. 2013 "It Takes a City" Taylor Symposium
Exploring strategies to prevent bullying and encourage tolerance and respect is just one of the topics for discussion as Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis presents the 24th annual Joseph T. Taylor Symposium. The 2013 symposium takes place from 8 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the IUPUI Campus Center, 420 University Blvd. The theme is “It Takes a City: Toward a Diverse and Humane Community.” The symposium also focuses on the use of art, architecture, city planning and the Internet to bridge ethnic, religious, professional and lifestyle differences in order to bring back a sense of community in cities in an age of hyper-individualism. Speakers from IUPUI, Indiana University Bloomington, Butler University, Ball State University and Purdue University will participate in the event. Representatives of Big Car Gallery, the Indianapolis Urban League and the Bully Prevention Alliance will also be part of the
day’s sessions. Educator and civil rights and gay liberation activist Gaye Todd Adegbalola will address the symposium theme during her musical-performance-based keynote presentation at the symposium luncheon. Adegbalola, a celebrated singer and musician, strives to provide a voice for those marginalized by society. The luncheon also includes the presentation of the Joseph T. Taylor Excellence in Diversity Awards. The annual symposium honors Joseph T. Taylor, the first dean of the School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI. Taylor is remembered for his commitment to dialogue and diversity. The Excellence in Diversity awards acknowledge individuals, projects, programs and groups that exemplify Taylor’s commitment to diversity and dialogue. “Each year’s Taylor Symposium provides an opportunity to think about and discuss matters of importance to our city and all cities,” said William Blomquist, dean of the School of Liberal Arts. “How to promote and sustain the benefits we gain from our diversity and weave them into a stronger fabric of community is an ideal example of a vital topic for Indianapolis and elsewhere.” Before the luncheon, a poster session featuring research and information on building community in Indianapolis will take place from 11:15 a.m. to noon in Room 405 of the Campus Center. This ad for Broad Ripple Hobby Supply appeared in 1949. The shop became Ed Schock's Toy and Hobby and moved from 929 Westfield Boulevard to 6220 Carrollton Avenue [I4 on map], where Stretch Logistics is today. Ed Schock is behind the counter on the far right.

Love from Lidia: Lesson 101 and more to come! Most people know Lidia Bastianich from watching her PBS series "Lidia's Italy". Or cooking with her QVC line of bakeware. Or adding her Italian inspired line of food products to meals. Or dining at one of her 6 restaurants across the US. Or doing all of the above at her Shangri-La for Italian wanna be's and buys at "Eataly" in NYC . Plus she blogs and travels with consumers via her daughter Tonya's business. And her son Joe is running the thriving family wine business from her home land. And THEN there are her cook books.... When you go to her website www.lidiasitaly.com it is mind boggling at all of the things that this talented woman accomplishes. AND she blogs! But meet her in person and you know why. She truly DOES love to cook. And what you see/bake/eat/visit/read from her culinary empire IS the real deal. Because it all IS Lidia. I had the pleasure of meeting and interviewing her last week when she made her first visit to Indianapolis. And it was a whirlwind. And I got her in the eye of her Indy visit hurricane. She arrived on Thursday to lunch with local restaurant owners and sample them on her family's line of wines. (Bastianich Winery in Friuli region of Italy. Old world grapes blended with new world vines. Affordable. Made for food. And coming SOON to Indianapolis!! As soon as I can taste them, I will review and let you know when and where you can buy.) Then a meet and greet cooking demo for WFYI viewers/listeners at Clark's Appliance. Friday meant more interviews, photos and another VIP reception. Then it was off to Ontario, Canada. And she smiled the entire time! I asked her a plethora of questions all of which she delightedly and detailed for me in response. I don't want to use this entire issue to relate, so I will edit my column this week and continue to the next with highlights of this engaging conversation with this sincere and talented cook. AND probably what she wants to be known for most, as a loving and nurturing Nonna. Italian for "grandma". Lidia celebrates her 65th birthday this month and is letting her 5 grandchildren call the shots. So what are they doing? Taking her to Anguilla where they don't want Nonna to cook but rather to spend time with them. She said that will be hard to do as she loves to go into the kitchen wherever she goes and when a new cuisine is presented, she wants to taste and learn how and where and why it developed. She said she loves the energy of Indianapolis and its food scene. She thought the people she met were very friendly. One of her 6 restaurants is also in the Midwest, Kansas City, so she talked much about the delightful and delicious game in this area that can readily be incorporated into her easy to make, wonderful to eat dishes in her latest cookbook, Lidia's Favorites. She said staples in every kitchen to make ANYTHING taste great should include virgin olive oil, onions, garlic and dried legumes. She said that introducing those aromas and flavors are important for all families. For the adults and the children. She said the sooner babies learn to smell and know the aromas of foods, such as vegetables–the easier it will be when they start to eat them. Lidia came to America when she was 12 and both of her parents worked. She said her mother always started something simmering on the stove in the morning but told HER how to finish it when she and the rest of the family came home. This made Lidia learn how to cook and appreciate time, energy, and food. She says even in the 21st century whirlwind world we can do that too and teach our children the same lessons. Congrats to the Middle School Wrestling Team who defeated both John Marshall and Washington yesterday in dual meet competition. Eighth graders DaShawn Adams, Eloy Garcia, and Jordy Veras provided key middleweight wins. But the victories were secured by the points provided by Ben Grimm, Amil-lion Wilbur, Jonathon Akins, Brandon Vizuet-Diaz, Quentin Perkins, Craig Edwards and Jonathon Rojas. I’m excited to introduce a new way to get out and stay out of pain. My name is Arty Clark and I have been a massage therapist for 12 years. I am always on the lookout for ways to help people live better. The question I hear most often once I help people get out of pain is, “How do I stay out of pain?” Of course time and money always affect the answer. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter The Urge to Garden Now Because February can be such a cold, gray month for me, I start getting sentimental about my garden. The sore muscles, dirty fingernails, and soiled knees are just memories. Although February is late to start forcing some bulbs, I like tending to them as a way of giving my green thumb some exercise. Forcing bulbs is fun, takes little effort, and doesn’t require much gardening skill. I am partial to the amaryllis (showy, lush blossoms ranging from vivid red, peach, and apple blossom pink to snowy white). Narcissus (white, fragrant blooms) is another favorite. Once amaryllis bulbs bloom, I save them from year to year. I used to dig the bulbs into my garden so the green leaves could recharge, but more recently I have begun keeping them in their pots and then moving them outdoors once weather permits. When fall comes, I pull the bulbs from the pots, put them in a paper bag, and store them in the house to avoid frostbite. The leaves turn brown and crisp, ready to be discarded. Then all I have to do is remember where I stored them. Some years I have had to search. No matter whether I buy a new bulb or replant an old one, I always begin planting by putting a layer of styrofoam packing peanuts in the bottom of the clay pot for drainage (much lighter than rocks). I have taken to planting multiple bulbs in one pot because I like a profusion of blossoms. Then I put in a layer of soil and nestle in the bulb, covering only the bottom half with soil or moistened moss. I have learned amaryllis don’t need as much water when sprouting as they need when blooming. Once the bulb’s first green tip appears, I get excited to watch daily growth. Because I never label bulb colors from year to year, each blossom provides a surprise. I also save a few paper white narcissus bulbs. I know most of them are sold for Christmas, but when the grays of February and March drag on, a blooming flower is a breath of fresh air. Just a hint about growing these fragrant flowers so they don’t get so leggy that they fall over: Give them a nip of alcohol and keep them in the dark when rooting. I root my paper whites in gravel and fill with water just to cover the root level. Once the green shoots are about two inches high, I move the plantings into sun light, pour off the water, and add a solution of water and 4-6% alcohol. Yes, use booze. You can use any hard liquor (vodka, tequila, whiskey) or rubbing alcohol, but not beer or wine because of their sugar content. Here’s a formula I learned online: “To convert your booze to 5% alcohol, just divide the percentage alcohol by 5 and then subtract 1. That will tell you how many parts water to mix with your 1 part alcohol. Example: 40 divided by 5 = 8: 8 minus 1 = 7... 7 parts water to 1 part alcohol.” I make my mixture in an empty water jug and continue watering with the water/ alcohol solution for the duration. It seems that the solution stunts the green growth of the plant but not the bloom. While there are a few more hardy bulbs that can be forced indoors, I have not been as successful with tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, particularly starting this far into winter. If you do not have bulbs but want just something green, try growing wheatgrass. All you need is a pot, a bit of soil and water plus seeds. Most health food stores should have red wheatgrass. Soak the seeds for a few hours. Then spread them on top of the soil in a container. Keep them very moist for the first several days until sprouting occurs. Spring Infrastructure Improvements The City of Indianapolis’ Department of Public Works has released the following information about road closures for several infrastructure improvement projects this spring: Westfield Boulevard will be closed on or after February 18, between College Avenue and Broadway Street for the construction of storm drains, curbs and sidewalks. This segment of roadway is scheduled to be closed for approximately one month and will be coordinated with the construction of the mixed-use parking structure at the corner of Westfield Boulevard and College Avenue. In addition to the work scheduled for Westfield Boulevard, the rainbow bridge on Guilford Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic for maintenance. The closure will begin on March 1 and continue for approximately 75 days. Pedestrian traffic will be allowed throughout the project. The detour route for this closure is East Westfield Boulevard to Westfield Boulevard to East 64th Street.

The Gallery Tours feature galleries, boutiques and shops each hosting their own unique art exhibits. The exhibits are scattered throughout the Village making it a wonderful evening for attendees to come explore Broad Ripple and support the arts community. Businesses: The Spring and Fall Gallery Tours are a great opportunity for you to showcase your business, the community and provide a positive experience to visitors! There are many ways to participate… Be a Location on the Tour! Join the Gallery Tour! Any business is allowed to participate. The requirements are that you have an art exhibition at your location and you are open from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the evenings of the tours. Each location is in charge of coordinating their event so you may choose your own artist, install the artwork however you see fit, and provide your choice of food and drink and music! The participation fee is $275 for BRVA members / $350 for non-members and includes both the Spring and Fall Gallery Tours. If you would like to participate in only one tour, the cost is $175 for BRVA members / $200 for non-members. Money collected from participation fees and sponsorships are put towards organizing and promoting the event. Restaurants, Just for You! There are two opportunities for restaurants to be involved in the tour. BE AN OFFICIAL SPONSOR... You can be an official sponsor of the tour and be one of only five restaurants identified on Gallery Tour's promotional items, including the Gallery Tour Guide, the event website, poster and social media pages. Restaurant sponsorships are only $200 and include both the Spring and Fall Gallery Tours! OR
BE A TASTING PARTNER... You can get exposure at the event by offering tastings at one of the participating Gallery Tour locations. We will provide a location and table for you to distribute samples of your food and promotional materials (coupons, fliers, menus, etc.) to advertise your business. We ask that you provide at least 50 samplesized servings. It is free to be a Tasting Partner!
Neighbors: We all benefit from a successful Gallery Tour! Here's what you can do to help. The entire Village benefits from a successful Gallery Tour. Help us spread the word! Whatever you can do to encourage attendance is greatly appreciated and will certainly help attract more visitors and customers to the Village. Tell your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors! Connect with the Gallery Tour on Facebook and invite all of your friends! We can send you electronic fliers/posters and drop off posters, postcards and yard signs. Do you like to organize events? Join the Gallery Tour Committee! Work with fellow Broad Ripple neighbors and business owners to plan and implement the Gallery Tours. Tasks include coordinating participating locations, marketing and promotion, applying for permits, and coordinating sponsorships. There will also be a Public Meeting on Tuesday, February 26 at 5:30 p.m. at the Indiana School for the Blind Auditorium (7725 North College Avenue) for the Monon Trail Rehabilitation project. There will be a brief presentation at 5:30 p.m. followed by an open house. Attendees will have the opportunity to view the project plans and ask questions.
