Title Boxing Club offers strength/cardio training By Mario Morone
The February public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee was held on February 26 at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church. There were about 35 in attendance. Three items were on the agenda. First was for the property at 1002 Broad Ripple Avenue. This was the second time that this petition was presented to the committee. The plan is to build a 3-story building on the property bounded by Broad Ripple Avenue, Winthrop Avenue, and the Monon Trail. Previously, United Package Liquor was at this location, before moving across the street into the Broad Ripple Station shopping center. The ground floor of this new building is planned for a national chain quick-service restaurant. The upper two floors would be office space. The committee voted to support this petition. Second was for the property at 815 Main Street / 6340 Ferguson Street [E4 on map]. Audio Solutions, currently located at 6371 Guilford Avenue [E4 on map], is planning to move after renovating the structure at 6340 Ferguson Street, adding a second floor. There was a long discussion with the committee about structuring the sidewalks and parking to follow the recently approved Envision Broad Ripple plan. The committee decided to call for an automatic continuance of the Department of Metropolitan Development hearing to give more time for discussion with the petitioners.

Owner Dan Hannay described the Glendale location at 2625 East 62nd Street, Suite 1007. “It’s a fitness club, not a fight club, which includes boxing as a means of getting fit both with strength and cardio. We have sixty 100-lb. heavy punching bags. Our POWER HOUR includes a 15-minute warm-up with stretching and cardio, a 30-minute punching combination with 8 three-minute rounds with one minute of active rest in between rounds. The last 15 minutes is core work – using a medicine ball and working on the abdominal muscles. Using this POWER HOUR, you can burn up to 1,000 calories. We offer a free workout for anybody who wants to come in. We offer 31 classes per week. We have people of all fitness levels, skill levels and ages,” he explained. After a successful retail career, Hannay reflected, “I really wanted to do something in the fitness business and this was an ideal opportunity. Boxing has been around for hundreds of years. According to an ESPN study, boxers are the most fit athletes in the world. I was a Pacemate and transitioned into fitness. I studied with the American Council for Fitness on exercising and trained in cardioboxing and strength training. I taught for several years at a privately owned gym in Carmel in boxing where I boxed one-on-one. The format of the classes will always be the same, but the content will always be different,” she mentioned. TBC also has a line of fitness apparel in the club. “We have a retail section that has attire like t-shirts and hats. We also sell boxing gloves and hand wraps,” Ms. Troyer added. Last was for the property at 5901 College Avenue. This agenda item was a preliminary appearance by Fox Glass for information only. As of this meeting nothing had been filed with the City of Indianapolis. The plan is for Ambrosia Ristorante to move from the current location of 915 Westfield Boulevard [G5 on map] to the middle of three spaces in the Fox Glass building at the corner of Kessler Boulevard and College Avenue. Clair Fox Acheson announced that she is planning to retire after 39 years in business. The stained glass studio may continue in business at another location under the management of current employees. Ambrosia Ristorante owner Gino Pizzi said after 34 years in the restaurant business he was looking to downsize a bit and the Fox Glass location will work well. The next meeting of the committee is planned for March 26 at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church at 7pm.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, Monika Herzig has gathered a talented group of jazz artists to play music composed by women. Women are underrepresented in the jazz world – as in most music genres – even though there are gobs of talented women musicians in our town. The lineup for the show includes: Boeyink (bass) is a doctoral candidate at the IU Jacobs School of Music. She is a first-call jazz bassist in the Indianapolis/ Louisville area and a frequent clinician and adjudicator. Carolyn Dutton (violin) has spent more than thirty years in the New York music scene performing on Broadway and in countless musical ensembles. A decade ago, she returned to Indiana and earned a Masters in Jazz Studies from the IU Jacobs photo courtesy of Monika Herzig School of Music. Shawn Goodman (clarinet) has won numerous awards and scholarships and is currently an adjunct instructor of clarinet at Butler University. She is also the conductor and president of the Symphonic Youth Orchestra of Greater Indiana as well leader of her own jazz groups. Monika Herzig (piano) is an Owl Studios Recording Artist and Indiana University faculty member. Her music has won awards from Down Beat and Billboard magazines and she is also the author of David Baker – A Legacy in Music. Heather Ramsey (vocals) is the CEO of the Midwest School of Voice in Carmel. Together with Monika Herzig she also leads the “Girls Create Music” camps. The fabulous Wendy Reed (vocals) has been an in-demand entertainer in the Indianapolis area for several decades and she’s all kinds of awesome. Jordan West (drums) is currently finishing her music degree at Butler University. Her group “Trackless” recently released their first recording. This promises to be a great show.

I can’t begin to tell you how much I love Ryan Bingham. I was lucky enough to interview him and see him at Birdy’s in 2008, on his first national tour. He and his band were still hauling their own gear and camping in the van. My, how things have changed! Ryan has released his fourth album; won an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a Grammy for the song "The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart)," toured Europe and played to thousands of people at festivals. I’m excited that he’s coming back to our town. The tracks I’ve heard from his latest record Tomorrowland are a little less acoustic, photo by Nora Spitznogle a little more electric Ryan Bingham, Austin City Limits Festival guitar, more of an altrock feel vs. alt-country. I’m looking forward to hearing it live. Opening the show is the duo honeyhoney. Their sound is a mix of folk, pop, country and loveliness. This promises to be a great evening. I’ll be the one pretending like I’m not stalking Ryan.

RAINBOW unaBRIDGEd ? Sitting, outside enjoying the view, it's such a simple act & one we all take for granted, it's one of life's real pleasures. The Rainbow Bridge in the heart of the Broad Ripple village was built in 1906 in a much simpler time and most would agree it has seen better days. Some people walk or drive over it and don't give it a second thought rushing to get to work , home or a tasty snack around the village. I walk back & forth across rainbow bridge several times a day on my trips around broad ripple to the coffee shop or to feed the ducks, but I find the bridge to be one of the more interesting features of broad ripple (an asset that needs to be valued & improved as we go forward). On an very basic level it's just a "bridge" built to allows cars & pedestrians to cross the canal on Guilford street but it has a myriad of other higher uses & benefits & adds to the enjoyment & soul of Broad Ripple that I feel are threatened. The rainbow bridge has always served as a meeting/gathering place for people to sit & enjoy the canal & the green outdoors (and to be away from the noisy concrete main street) The bridge guard railing are used as sitting places to have lunch & chat with friends. Visitors like to congregate here in the warmer months, it's free & doesn't cost anything (as do the cafes & bars, which discourage people from hanging out if they are not buying anything) People from all walks of life gather here, mum's & dad's with their kids, workers, lovers on a stroll & teenagers on the fringe with no where else to go ! (but hey, that's the broad ripple spirit! a social environment where we all get along) The colorful look & rainbow name of the bridge even promotes the core Broad Ripple feelings of inclusion & community. The function of the bridge as a free meeting place also adds a feature to the village that is missing in other parts. (like a mini Artsgarden-style space creating a social space out of nothing!), it's Broad Ripple's equivalent of the "Spanish Steps" in Rome, Italy, or the Montmartre steps in Paris, France, in front of the Basilica of the sacre Cœur/Basilica of the Sacred Heart church. Spaces where people sit, play guitars & just enjoy life! There aren't many open spaces or parks in & around broad ripple that people can walk to & this canal area & bridge allow people to stroll & sit & enjoy just being outside & around Broad Ripple. The Rainbow Bridge on Guilford Street is scheduled for a much needed repair project starting on March the 1st. The bridge will be open to pedestrians but closed to cars for 70 days while work is completed. The plan is to restore the bridge by repairing the concrete structure, sidewalks & raising the guard railings (the same rails that are now used for sitting). It is this detail (raising the railings) that will take away the very feature about the bridge that most people enjoy & use, the ability to sit & relax on the bridge to take in the surrounds. The Indianapolis Department of Public Works who are undertaking the project & spending almost $500,000 want to raise the railing up to 18" (one & half feet) to their current standard for other bridges (mostly high speed bridges like Meridian Street bridge) even tho there has been no cases of people or cars falling off the bridge! I've lived in Broad Ripple for 18 years & worked as a designer for consumer electronics on 3 continents (Philips in Australia & Holland & GE & RCA in the USA) One thing I learned was for any design project to be "successful" you need to take into account the current needs & usage of its users. (I feel this hasn't been taken into consideration for the current development). If the bridge is to continue to be a functional place & space for people in broad ripple to enjoy the canal area, raising the railings another 1 1/2 feet above where they are now will only change the bridge forever, for the worse, it just won't be a place to sit & eat or enjoy the view. Just a bridge to walk or quickly drive over, without any sitting. Progress ? Raising the railing isn't sitting well with me ! Regards Brett Rathmell Broad Ripple business owner & concerned resident.

DPW meeting held for canal bridge closure By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) held a public meeting on February 22 at Broad Ripple Park to discuss the plans to rehabilitate the Guilford Street bridge over the canal. The plans call for a 75-day closure to vehicles on the bridge starting March 1. Foot traffic will be allowed when safe. The rehabilitation includes raising the existing oval-themed side railings to meet building codes, resurfacing the roadway, repairing the crumbling underside of the bridge, and reinforcing the canal banks under the bridge. Guilford will remain open to the north and south edges of the bridge to allow for access to the businesses along the canal. All bridge workers plan to park their vehicles on the bridge deck during the closure.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Call for Entries Now Open for 2013 Heartland Film Festival
Independent filmmakers can now submit films for consideration to the 22nd Annual Heartland Film Festival. The 10-day Festival, which will be held in Indianapolis, Ind., October 17-26, 2013, serves to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. Filmmakers participating in the Festival attend numerous screenings of their films and other special events designed to allow interaction between filmmakers and audiences. The Heartland Film Festival is a qualifying festival for the Annual Academy Awards® in the Short Films Category. This means that the winner of the Grand Prize for Best Narrative Short Film will qualify for consideration in the Short Films category of the Annual Academy Awards® without the standard theatrical run, provided the film otherwise complies with the Academy rules. Three 2012 Heartland Film Festival Award Winners were selected as nominees for the 2013 Academy Awards® and one, “Inocente,” won the Oscar® for Best Documentary, Short Subject. Filmmakers are invited to submit independently-produced feature length and short films in Narrative and Documentary categories. Student filmmakers are encouraged to apply for consideration within the standard field of competition. High school filmmakers are encouraged to enter their films in the High School Film Competition, now entering its fourth year. Submissions will be evaluated for their achievement of excellence in filmmaking and alignment with Heartland’s mission to inspire filmmakers and audiences through the transformative power of film. Submissions are accepted through Withoutabox.com. Volunteer screening committees will help narrow down the initial field of competitors. Juries comprised of individuals from the scholarly film community, local film critics and previous Heartland Film Festival filmmakers will review the submissions and select five narrative features, five documentary features, five narrative short films and five documentary short films including student films, as winners. Outstanding films will be recognized with Heartland Film Festival Awards and more than $125,000 in cash prizes, including a Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature, Grand Prize for Best Documentary Feature, Grand Prize

Completed U.S. and international feature length and short films may be submitted by May 1 for early consideration and a reduced submission fee. Studio Offering Art Classes for Kids & Adults Opens New Location in Broad Ripple
An Indianapolis-based art studio with locations in Zionsville, Noblesville, Carmel and Fishers has opened a new location in Broad Ripple. MyArt, which teaches the Monart method of art instruction to children and adults, is now located inside Paper & Pine at 6311 Westfield Boulevard in Broad Ripple. The Broad Ripple art studio offers weekly art classes for children ages 4 and older, along with teens and adults. Children’s classes include Getting Ready, an introduction to drawing, for ages 4-5; Basic Drawing for ages 6-8; and Drawing Fundamentals for ages 9 and older. Classes range from one to one and a half hours long for children. Teens and adults can participate in the Drawing for Teens & Adults class, which runs two hours each week. No previous art instruction is required for any classes and beginners are welcome. Classes are held weekly Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in the afternoon and evening. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the middle section of the top row which contains 2-3-5. The 8 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 2. The 8 in the center section eliminates the spaces below the 2. The 8 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 5. The only place left is directly below the 3. In the last issue I shared my recent interview with PBS Cooking Celebrity Lidia Bastianich. She made her first visit to Indianapolis a few weeks ago. In addition to talking about her cookbooks, her impressions of Indianapolis and her plans for her 65th birthday... we talked about her LATEST loves, Korean food and her family's wines. "They pickle vegetables--that Kimchi thing. We do that in my homeland in Italy. Pickle beets and vegetables. SO as I study Korean food I think about what Italian ingredients I already know how to do , how I can use in dishes to add a new flavor, " said Lidia with a smile of someone who loves discovering new cuisines as well as preserving the recipes of her Italian heritage. Lidia is passionate about her family's wines as well. The Bastianich wines are from the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region where Lidia grew up. She says they focus on preserving the grapes of the region and making food friendly blends from them. " I love our Vespa Bianco. It is blend of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Picolit". Picolit is a grape that is most often made into a dessert wine. So the added touch gives the crisp, fresh fruity white wine a hint of honeysuckle goodness. "The area is also known for its prosciutto, so a slice of prosciutto, maybe some figs, would be delicious with a glass of Vespa", says Lidia. The Bastianich wines also offer some red blends and straight varietals. "We are food people so our wines are meant to be enjoyed with food", said Lidia. Everybody to the table is Lidia's motto when it comes to wine and food. So I asked, if someone has a special meal to plan and prepare, what dish would involve "everybody"? She replied, "Hands on. Gnocchi. Italian potato filled pasta. Everyone rolls up the sleeves and digs in to the cooked mashed potatoes and flour and rolls and creates. Then a simple mushroom or game ragu. Perhaps someone in the group is a hunter and can contribute their venison or quail or rabbit. Fresh protein can be diced and chopped and sauteed in the aromatics...add a can of tomatoes because FRESH tomatoes are NOT in season and canned are just as good." Red Gold Tomatoes in Elwood, Indiana is a GREAT source for canned tomatoes found at most every grocery and always delicious. And the wine for this dish? "Aah, a lovely barbaresco or fruity primitivo," she said. Or one of the Bastianich wines which are just arriving in the Indianapolis market. The team entered 10 wrestlers in the city tournament and 8 placed. Remone' Clemmons and William Santiago competed well in their weight classes but missed placing by just one match. Ben Grimm, Amil-lion Wilbur, Craig Edwards, and Zak Abdul-Hakim all placed 4th. Quentin Perkins and Eloy Garcia placed 2nd. Brandon Vizuet-Diaz finished 1st in the 90 pound weight class by pinning 2 of his 3 opponents. DaShawn Adams kept his season undefeated and captured the 145 pound weight class title. In the finals, he pinned his opponent in 21 seconds. DaShawn was named the most valuable wrestler of the tournament. The coaches are very proud of this team. The future looks very bright for Broad Ripple Wrestling. Well done, gentlemen!

The old Broad Ripple McNamara Florist building has been razed to make way for the Monon Place Apartments expansion. McNamara started in that building in 1954. Before McNamara, a business that repacked journal bearings for railroad trucks was in the building.

Random Ripplings The Indianapolis Department of Public Works held a public meeting on February 26 at the Indiana School for the Blind auditorium. The meeting outlined the $250,000 Monon Trail rehabilitation project planned for a half of a mile section of the trail north of 75th Street. The trail is expected to be closed along this section for about two weeks in April. The exact dates have not yet been determined. Don’t Get SAD….Get Moving! It’s February as I write this….and by the time you read it, we will thankfully be past its last day. Personally, February is my least favorite month of the year (and thankfully it is the shortest month in the year). Besides my husband’s birthday and the Valentine’s Day “cheese”, I would actually prefer to sleep through it; and from what I hear from almost all of my clients it seems I’m not alone… and maybe you can relate as well? Yes, December and January are challenging as well, but between the holidays and the New Year, they seem to hold a higher esteem. February is like a big gray flat tire and people are “over it”! A more scientific name for a more severe form of feeling like a winter zombie is the term Seasonal Affective Disorder (appropriately named SAD). SAD is a form of depression that affects sufferers during the winter months (in most cases) in which there are fewer daylight hours. Because there is not as much daylight, circadian rhythms are disrupted, and those who have this disorder may suffer from sadness, lack of pleasure or lack of interest, excessive sleeping, weight gain, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. As with other forms of depression and psychiatric disorders, seasonal affective disorder is a real medical condition related to neurotransmitters. Hormones manufactured deep in the brain automatically trigger attitudinal changes at certain times of year. Experts believe that SAD is related to these hormonal changes. One theory is that reduced sunlight during fall and winter leads to reduced production of serotonin in the brain; the transmitter that which creates a soothing, calming effect. The result of there not being enough serotonin is feelings of depression along with symptoms of fatigue, food craving, and weight gain. Do you find that you can relate to some of these symptoms? Although I previously stated that I detest February, I have no choice but to live through it and have found ways to make it bearable. Here are some tips that I have personally found useful. First, either take a vacation (even if for just a night or two) or have things planned to look forward to; whether it be a Broadway play, a new art class or a 5K, having something you enjoy on the radar screen always seems to help and may hit your RESET button so to speak. And SPEAKING of exercise, evidence has shown that low- to moderate-level exercise, such as distance running, yoga, swimming, and cycling, can raise levels of serotonin in the brain. If you can bundle up, and god willing no ice…try getting outdoors. Exercising outside provides exposure to sunlight (lack of sunlight can cause an imbalance of the two key mood-regulating hormones serotonin and melatonin). It also improves your outlook by stimulating release of endorphins which helps you sleep better, elevates your mood and makes it easier to eat more healthfully — I can sure relate to this. Getting outside on what seems as a yucky day, turns out to be a great day! Also, eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies also promotes energy and mood. When we feel fatigued, we are likely to turn to more carb-based foods which will tumbleweed into just more tiredness. Feeling like a slug in the grey and blistering cold winter days is almost inevitable for most. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Making Way for Nuthatches Every season seems to present me with a project. It’s usually inspired by something I have seen in a magazine or on TV. Because I’m inclined to tell myself “I can make that, I don’t have to buy it,” I have welded, hammered, nailed, carved, and painted an amazing assortment of projects ranging from fences to headboards. One bubbled up from happening across imaginative recycled bird houses. I kept seeing these whimsical creations at various shows and craft fairs. I loved the old barn wood and the geegaws artisans incorporated. So it was that I set about making my bird house — absent pre-planned design of what it might become ― with a pile of old remnants and barn wood. As I surveyed the stash of wood, I figured I could make a three-story house. I cut the side, the holes in the face board, and the flooring. Assembling the sides and base tested my ability with a drill. I am not one of those DIY folks who have a tool for every project. I only have the basics: a scroll saw, electric drill, hammer, and screw driver. I had old tin ceiling tile with which to fashion my bird house roof, protection sufficient for any rainstorm. Then came the decorating fun. I had some old initial letters to personalize the house. I nailed on old garden rake tines, door knobs, old tools and topped it with a whimsical wooden bird. No perches on my house; I knew the birds didn’t need them. When finished, my bird “mansion” was three tiers and 42” high with 14 holes. It probably weighed about 40 pounds. Alas, I had to hire a handyman to get it fastened to the top of a 15-foot pole in my garden. To my excitement, the first visitors were nuthatches. Because they made this their home the first season, I named my creation “Nuthatch Inn.” Have you seen a bird creeping down a tree? If so, you’re probably watching a nuthatch. We commonly have one kind of nuthatch in the Broad Ripple area: the White-breasted Nuthatch. This small, blue-gray, black, and white bird loves to come to feeders that have peanuts, sunflowers, or suet. Our yard is a perfect habitat for them because they love woods and pine trees. One interesting fact about these small birds is they like to store food in tree crevices and bark, cracks in the ground, or under small rocks and can go back to their cache as long as a month later. They don’t use their tails for support, this allowing them to descend down trees head first. Another nuthatch you might see in the area is the Red-breasted Nuthatch. Although they usually do not frequent our area, we have spotted them about every other year recently. They were an oddity for me when I first saw them— a bit smaller than their cousin and marked with a decidedly rosy breast. This nuthatch irrupted in our yard when its food source became scarce further north. They predominately search for northern conifer seeds and visit Indiana when need dictates. Nuthatches nest in cavities. That’s why I think they were the first residents of my housing project. My bird house was more than spacious and had the scent of old wood. Thereafter, sparrows occupied the dwelling. And this year, I walked out after one of the fall storms and found my well-built condo lying on the ground. The bottom platform that attached to the base had rotted after 15 seasons. Now I’m deciding whether to repair and repost or create a new nesting box. Just maybe you’ll be contemplating picking up a hammer and getting creative too. Nuthatches might be our beneficiaries.
