Were you a swimmer in the 1960s, ’70s, ’80s or ‘90s? If you swam competitively or needed a swimsuit anytime of the year, you would probably remember Kelleher Swim Shop at their first location on 38th and Illinois street or later years at 1908 E. 62nd street next to the Tin Star Restaurant. Dick and Norma Kelleher started Kelleher Swim Shop back in the 1960s out of their family’s love for swimming. Their daughter, Jodi Shircliff, tells the story. “Summer days were always spent at the Riviera Swim Club with their three daughters, Patty, Janey and myself from sunup to sundown and we were usually the last to leave! You could always find the latest Speedos (Kelleher Swim Shop was one the first retailers in the U.S. to sell them) or the very fancy “fashion” suits and cover-ups. You could get all of your swimming needs at Kelleher’s - goggles,

kickboards, beach towels, and stylish swim caps. You probably remember being greeted by Dick, Norma, and their little white dog, Kelle in the tiki hut-style atmosphere with the cabana dressing rooms to try on your suit. During the busy summer months, extra girls were hired to help with out-of-town mail orders from swim teams, local swimmers getting outfitted for team suits, and stopwatch rentals for swim meets,” Ms. Shircliff recalled. “Dick and Norma started out selling swimming pools. It was called Lancer Pools by Kelleher operating out of our home. The pools were a fiberglass shell that would be inserted into the ground and then landscaped around it as usual. It didn’t really make a big “splash,” but did warrant a pool in their yard for demonstration purposes!” she noted. “During that time, Speedo swimsuits were also being sold from their home. Tank suits were quite new at the time and came in only a few colors! The shop was eventually opened at 38th and Illinois Street. They traveled to the Summer Olympics in Mexico and had pictures of the Olympians on display at the shop outfitted of course, in Speedo swimwear. “Kelleher Swim Shop was open year-round, 6 ½ days a week. Sundays were for pool time in the summer. Dick passed away in 1979. Norma continued running the store until 1994 when their nephew, Scott Conder, bought the store that he eventually moved to the Monon Bike Trail in Broad Ripple. It has since closed. Norma passed away at the end of 2012 in Cincinnati. If you’ve spent any time in Broad Ripple, chances are you’ve run across Rusty Redenbacher. If you’ve been hanging around the Broad Ripple music scene for the twenty or so years that Rusty has been entertaining us and pushing the musical envelope, lucky you! Rusty is celebrating the release of his third solo album, Lower, with an evening full of music by Rusty and friends - Mr. Kinetik, The Native Sun, Echomaker, MC Sparkplug and DJ Ganzarelli. Rusty was recently named as one of Indiana’s top 25 musicians by Indianapolis Star music writer, David Lindquist. He’s in pretty remarkable company on that list, right up there with Cole Porter, Wes Montgomery, Paul Mahern, and Michael Jackson. You might remember Rusty (then known as Russell Johnson) from his days as part of the rock groups, Birdmen of Alcatraz and Lazarus, and the hip-hop group The Mudkids. Each of the bands had a large local following and gained regional and national attention. I’m always amazed how Rusty attracts music fans of all ages and backgrounds, and is respected and loved by his fellow musicians. The show promises to be great. The price of admission includes a copy of the album.

In this case the “pits” are doggies, pit bulls to be exact. The night will feature two sets from the Ultraviolet Blues Band and yummy tapas-style food from the talented folks at Sabbatical. All donations and a portion of the night’s sales will be donated to benefit the dogs of Casa Del Toro Pit Bull Education and Rescue. Ultraviolet Blues Band is celebrating the release of their new album, Un-Solid State Blues. Band members include Johnny Ping, Matt Riegel, Matt Kennicut, and John Jett. The band is lead by Johnny Ping and is a showcase of his almost two decades worth of blues material. Their inspirations include Elmore James, Hound Dog Taylor, and John Lee Hooker.

You Can Get There From Here: Transit Options in Broad Ripple By Bill Malcolm

bill@broadripplegazette.com Special report to the Broad Ripple Gazette - First of a two-part series: With all the talk about Indy Connect (the regional transit plan) and expanding transit in the region, you might think a light rail station in Broad Ripple is coming soon. Far from it. In this two-part series we will get an overview of public transit options in Broad Ripple today and then in two weeks cover what the Indy Connect proposal would mean for Broad Ripple. Today Broad Ripple is served by two IndyGo bus routes that basically run once an hour during the week: the #17 College and the #18 Nora. The #17 College is really two routes northbound from downtown: The #17A goes up College from downtown and at Kessler cuts over to Glendale Mall. It there makes a ten minute stop before continuing over to Broad Ripple. The #17 goes up College to Broad Ripple Avenue and then over to Glendale. (It's a bit confusing so make sure you are on the right bus when coming from downtown to get to the right destination.) The trip takes about 45 minutes and costs $1.75. Frequency is about once an hour during the week days. It takes about 35 minutes to get downtown from Broad Ripple and Compton stop (near McDonald's). Southbound, the #17 runs south on College Avenue to Mass Avenue before ending on the east side of the Capitol. Service runs hourly during the week and weekends. The last bus during the week leaves the Capitol at 9:20 p.m.. Note the stop at College and Broad Ripple Avenue is closed due to construction of the new parking garage so be sure and catch the #17 on Broad Ripple Avenue. Another route serving downtown from Broad Ripple is the #18 Nora. From Broad Ripple, it goes south on Pennsylvania and Central before cutting over to Meridian closer to downtown. It too drops you off on the east side of the State Capitol. Northbound from Broad Ripple it goes to Keystone at the Crossing. Service is hourly except during rush hour when there are additional runs. The #18 takes 34 minutes to get downtown from College and 63rd stop. Also, this route does not run on Sundays but instead becomes the 18/26 North Loop so on Sundays the #17 is your only route downtown. According to Samantha Cross of IndyGo, the lack of Sunday service (except for the loop) on this route is due to lack of ridership. So let's say you have to be at work by 8:30 a.m. and live near downtown Broad Ripple. You can take the #17 from Broad Ripple/Compton at 7:36 a.m. and arrive at 8:10 a.m. or take the #18 a 7:56 a.m. from College and 63rd and arrive at 8:30 a.m. (Both routes go to the State Capitol.) The fare is $1.75 on all IndyGo routes and no change is provided nor are transfers given out. You can buy a day pass, though, for $4. A 10-trip pass costs $17.50. A 31-day pass costs $60. Persons 65 and older, youth 18 and under, and persons with a disability get half off if they get a IndyGo half fare identification card. Also, bike racks are available for two bicycles. Stops are called out by a recording on the bus. Recent rides on both routes for this writer have been on time with friendly drivers and efficient service. Unlike driving, you can read, play with your iPhone, talk to fellow passengers, or enjoy the scenery. With parking meters now charging $1.50 an hour, it's great to take transit downtown. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Broad Ripple Brewpub, Indiana’s very first Brewpub, is excited to announce the first in a series of Beer Dinners. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. On March 9th, I had the pleasure of attending a Butler Men’s Basketball game at Hinkle Fieldhouse. It was their last home game and it was total entertainment. Butler beat Xavier by two points. But I was there to see the English Bulldog mascots whom I refer to as the Blues Brothers: Blue II and Blue III. For more than a week the media was talking non-stop about this game’s half time event, the Changing of the Collar, the first ever transition of a retiring mascot to a new mascot. Blue III, or Trip as he is nicknamed, is just one year old and has spent this last year in the public eye as the understudy or mascot-in-training. Blue II is healthy but a senior ready for and deserving of a happy retirement. He has worked tirelessly. I can remember when I first started writing for this publication maybe six years ago. I started writing with a focus on pets because I own a pet supply store. So I wrote frequently on the Butler Bulldog which at the time most readers knew nothing about. Butler had only had one living official Bulldog mascot in the history of the school which goes back to the 1800’s. She is still alive and is 12 years old. The staff member that took care of her left the university and took her so another dog was brought in, Blue II, and Michael Kaltenmark, a new staff member with a position in fund raising, stepped up and volunteered to be the new caretaker. His life has been a whirlwind ever since for two reasons: 1) he’s a marketing genius with Twitter and Facebook for the dog (s) and 2) the men’s basketball team has been outstanding going to the Final Four in 2010 and 2011. Everything is on fire and it is now said to be “The Butler Way”. As for me, I contacted the school in 2006 when I opened City Dogs Grocery to offer to sponsor Blue II and provide his food. I wanted to do this in honor of my parents who were alum from the class of 1932. I’m not sure but I think we must have been the first sponsor. At the time, he was just a campus pet, rather lazy, who slept under Michael’s desk and was often led outside by students for breaks. Enter the success of the basketball team led by Coach Stevens and everything changed. I am now feeding Blue II, Blue III and Marcus, the Butler security dog. We love every minute of it and consider it an honor and a privilege to be a part of this media magic. I wish we could do more. So that brings us to the present with the changing of the collar. Perhaps the best coverage is that of WISH TV. You can see it on YouTube. We had a quiet role in the process, but a very important one. Our store supplied the beautiful blue 1 ½” leather collar and matching lead. We secured it from an independent leathersmith in California who is one of our first suppliers. It was taken to Reis-Nichols Jewelers who embellished it with sterling silver medallions featuring the school logo, university seal and an engraving designed by Michael Kaltenmark dedicating the symbolism of the collar to future Bulldog mascots who give their service to the university. The YouTube video takes you behind the scene to view the craftsmen at work and shows a close-up of the finished collar. It is now under lock and key in a safe and not something we will see regularly. The ceremony itself was just terrific. At the end, after all was said and done Blue III (Trip) was walked off the center court and left standing in the midst of a sell-out crowd of 10,000 fans was a man and his dog. Michael loves Blue II and was emotional in having to let him step down. For nine years they have been a team working with tremendous energy to serve this school and the community who can’t get enough of them. With great strength, pride and a tear in his eye he lifted Blue up high in the air and gave him to a roaring crowd with deafening applause. I stood and applauded with tears of my own as I am so very, very proud to be such a part of this wonderful enchantment. I stood there thinking my Dad was in his freshman year the year Hinkle Fieldhouse opened in 1928. Last month he would have been 100 years old. He was a young freshman, only 16. I felt his presence along with Mom’s. They loved their school and kept up with it. They attended reunions. They were smiling down that night. Everything was good and right. Thank you Blue II. Martin Schliessmann is making a movie about Indiana wine. Not just about the current day production but the history of the industry and the man who got the grapes growing and going in 18th century Indiana, John James Dufour. But, why? Well that question seems to be the driving force behind his penchant to produce documentary films. His previous "Why Sturgis?" focuses on the history of Sturgis, South Dakota which hosts the world's longest and largest motorcycle rally annually. It took two years to produce and was released theatrically in 2007. This time around the movie is not called "Why Indiana" or even "Du Who?" It's called "In(diana) Vino Veritas" which the In Vino Veritas part means translates to "in wine, truth". Since he is self-funded and has a full time job, the project is anything but a hobby but also not on a major sponsored deadline for release. Martin and his videographer have been traveling the state shooting interviews with almost all of the now 70 Indiana wineries, plus others who have contributed to the making of wine in Hoosier land and that list of interviews alone is enough to make one want to see the film. He plans to have it ready to release by end of the year. On Wednesday March 27th I will be interviewing Blue 2, the recently retired "America's Dog" mascot of Butler University. On March 4th the Ravenswood White River Neighborhood Association had our regularly scheduled meeting. At the request of Deputy Mayor Olgen Williams on December 3rd, 2012 we invited Citizens Energy/Water to speak to our community about the sanitation, sewer problems in our neighborhood. This meeting was very well attended and there were many questions asked of Bob Masbaum who represented Citizens Energy that evening. Our questions included, “What is going to happen with sewer replacement now that the city has sold the utility to Citizens Energy/Water?” and "Where do we fall in line for this much needed utility replacement and when will it begin?" Unfortunately, there were no answers. A follow-up meeting with Citizens Energy/Water is scheduled for Monday, April 8th and will include Marion County Health Dept. Septic & Wells.

“Pop” till you Drop? “Welcome to Burger Hut, may I take your order?” “Yeah I’ll take a large French fry and a 64 ounce Big Gulp.” When I hear statements such as this, I think to myself “OMG! How can someone drink 64 ounces of liquid sugar?” Unfortunately I have a strong feeling that the answer may lie in that he/she doesn’t realize what the high levels of high frustose corn syrup (HFCS) can do to their body, or they simply don’t care, or they were raised on soda and have a dependency. It is truly sad that so many people regularly consume high calorie, sugary and HFCS products which contribute to obesity and a host of other health problems. You’ve probably heard by now that the proposed ban on large sugary soft drinks that was scheduled to go into effect in New York City on March 12 has been overturned by a State Supreme Court judge. Unveiled in May of 2012, mayor Bloomberg's plan banned the sale of any cup or bottle of a sweetened drink larger than 16 ounces in restaurants, movie theaters and other venues. Bloomberg and supporters say a proposed ban on the sale of large quantities of sugary drinks is crucial to combating a nationwide obesity epidemic. While I admire their intention, I agree that this ban was and is not the answer. People who drink soda, are going to drink soda whether you sell it in a small or large cup, or an eyedropper; and although I disagree with it personally, it is not my place or our government’s to say whether they can or cannot. When I first heard of this proposal I was actually in favor because I agree that portion sizes in the past 20 years have become insanely larger. But I realized that simply because I personally think people should drink less soda doesn’t mean that they “legally” cannot do so. And besides, this type of governing could slowly lead to more control of how we personally choose to live our lives (For example, passing a law mandating a minimum of three workouts a week…haha). I feel that the answer lies heavily in education and information. Accurate and regular exposure to the facts of obesity and its causes in school, on billboards, and in ads can help to remind people of the dangers of excessive HFCS consumption and hopefully lead to healthier behaviors. Also, clearly placed calorie counts on all menus give the consumer the information of whether or not to consume a product. I’d even be in favor of package warnings similar to cigarette packs describing the dangers of certain products. Therefore, if the guy who ordered the 64 ounce Big Gulp sees on the menu that it is in fact 744 calories, and still orders it…well, that was his personal and informed choice; while be it a poor one, I feel he has the right to choose it while aware of the consequences. We all make bad choices from time to time of course, but given it be legal, I believe we have the freedom to do so. I am sure that some of you may disagree with me, and I am slightly torn in writing this as I agree with the aim of the proposed restriction but not the method. People simply do not want to be told “what” to do; but telling them “how” to do it may be more effective as they can take more ownership in their actions. Happy Spring!!

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Trio of Rivals If I had a dollar for every time I’ve been asked, “Where did you go to high school?” I think I could buy something big — really big. Even though high school days were long ago, this question invariably pops up when meeting new people who also grew up in Indianapolis. This seems to be one of those ice breaker questions that starts conversation rolling. So when I answer, “North Central,” I’m always interested to hear where others spent their high school days as well. When I hear “Broad Ripple” or “Shortridge,” my mind starts racing back to friends and relatives I knew in those schools. Oh, the memories! Each school had its own personality, and anyone who went to one of them of course thought their high school was the best. Battle lines between every high school in Indiana always seemed to be most pronounced on the basketball courts. There was nothing like the Hoosier Hysteria of sectional and state basketball competition in March to heighten competitive loyalties. We all wanted our team to make it to Hinkle Fieldhouse. Interestingly enough, it was usually teams from out of the city that ended up in the play-offs for the state title. We had plenty of chances to cross paths, Broad Ripple, Shortridge, and North Central competing in other sports and extra-curricular activities like debate. We’d often get to one another’s variety shows and theatrical or music productions. Our school newspapers and yearbooks reported the life of each student body, making every effort to taut achievements with all-due Rocket, Blue Devil, or Panther pride. I think what is amazing is the quality of student those three high schools turned out. Let me name a few from the three different schools:
