Neat-O Art Shop - a hidden gem in Broad Ripple By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Neat-O is a specialty shop dedicated to offering a variety of original art, artisan and contemporary craft pieces to consumers. The store acquires its products through artists on a consignment basis and sells them to the public at affordable prices. Neat-O opened April 12 at 724 Broad Ripple Ave, Suite 2, in the Huntington Bank building and is co-owned by sisters Lee Slagle and Stephanie Shears. Stephanie described some of Neat-O's art: "We have photography, paintings - abstracts and still-life paintings of toys and games like Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots, chess, Monopoly and watercolors. We also have jewelry, some of which is beaded, some made of paper beads, some up-cycled (recycled) cans, soaps, dishcloths, hand woven rugs and purses made of recycled aluminum. Wendell August started a forge business in 1923 located in Grove City, Pennsylvania (Neat-O is an exclusive local seller of August's items). It is the largest and oldest metal forge in the United States, 724 Broad Ripple Ave but each piece is still individually handcrafted in Grove City. Anything neat-oartshop.com that isn't local has a personal connection to us somehow. It's like an art fair here," Lee mentioned. "We decided to open a store because entrepreneurship runs in our family. Our grandparents owned and operated a grocery store in Bruin, Pennsylvania, where our parents grew up, which is in western Pennsylvania north of Pittsburgh. We have great memories being a kid there getting penny candy from the store. Whenever there was a holiday from school, we would go to Bruin," Stephanie recalled. “The family is very tight knit and Stephanie and I are very close. We've always done things together," Lee mentioned. "We're like twins, even though we're 18 months apart," Stephanie noted. "Our mom is pretty crafty. She is always doing projects, like knitting and sewing. She has done some painting and cross-stitching. A lot of people on her side of the family are pretty creative," Stephanie explained. “The business is very

alan@broadripplegazette.com The April meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use committee was held at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church on April 23. There were about 25 in attendance. Two issues were on the agenda. 1) 6265 Carrollton Avenue [H4 on map] - Petition #2013-DV3-009 is requesting a variance of development standards to provide for a tavern expansion in an existing building with zero parking access (84 spaces required). The petitioner stated that no alcohol permit changes are required for the expansion. The expansion adds the small portion of the north side of the building that would connect the Alley Cat to the store front on Carrollton. The expansion would add eight 4-top tables inside and some tables for outdoor dining on Carrollton. The committee voted to support this petition, with two abstentions. The hearing date before the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals is May 21. 2) 6349 College Avenue [F3 on map] - Petition #2013-ZON-013 is requesting a rezoning of 1.9 acres from C-2 to C-3 to provide for retail, commercial, and residential uses. This project includes a 32-35k sq.ft. ground floor single-user grocery store, with a four-story apartment structure atop a portion of the ground floor and a parking structure to the north. There would be about 80 apartment units of various sizes. the garage would have about 290 spaces. The committee tabled the vote until more information is received from the Metropolitan Zoning staff. The hearing date before the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals is May 9. The next meeting of the committee is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28 at 6pm at Broad Ripple United Methodist Church.

"Art has always been part of our lives, so you learn to appreciate the craft and skill involved, especially if you can't do them. The creative process is interesting and the possibilities are endless. You're not confined to a box. I like to try and learn everything. I've done sewing, some painting, cross-stitching, crocheting and knitting. I like to do do-it-yourself home projects and would like to do more sewing and quilting projects," Lee said. Stephanie paints as a hobby. Subsidy For Food Store And Apartment Complex In Br Spurs Debate By Bill Malcolm

bill@broadripplegazette.com The long-shuttered Shell Station just north of the Central Canal on College would be the site of new taxpayer-subsidized apartments, parking, and an organic grocery store. Midtown tax increment financing (TIF) district funds (the district runs from 38th and Fall Creek north to Broad Ripple) would be used for the mixed-use complex if all goes as planned. Joe Scimia of Faegre Baker and Daniels described the proposal to the Broad Ripple Land Use Committee on April 23. According to meeting minutes posted on the BRVA website, the project would include a 35,000 square foot organic grocery store, 88 new apartments, and a 280 space parking garage at the site of the shuttered Shell Station at 64th and College and the apartments currently behind it. The complex would be 5 stories with 4 stories of apartments. Broad Ripple's city councilman, Will Gooden, said he supported the TIF financing for the project which will generate more TIF funds for other projects. "The concept of TIF financing is a good one for Midtown and north Midtown," he told The Broad Ripple Gazette. Gooden said he was excited about getting the TIF concept going. Like the new Broad Ripple parking garage, this project would add to the TIF base, he continued. It will help the rest of the district and Midtown. Also supporting the project was Marc Lotter, Communications Director for Mayor Ballard. He said it was great news for Broad Ripple that the area is looking good for economic development. Obviously a lot of study was done on the marketplace, traffic, and the like by the developer which is why they picked the site, according to Lotter. With rents for a one bedroom apartment in Broad Ripple approaching $1,000 per month and no new apartments nor condos being built in years despite the strong demand, tenants might like more options. Gary Ricks, tenant at an apartment complex one mile north of the Village, said he welcomed 88 new units of apartments. "Certainly Broad Ripple needs more housing close and convenient to the Village. That's good for everybody," he said. (However, the existing 40 units of apartments behind the Shell Station would be demolished under the plan so the net increase in apartments is smaller.) Not everyone is thrilled by the proposal, however. Rudy Nehrling, President of the nearby Good Earth Foods (which sits just behind the proposed project area), has concerns about taxpayer support for the project (via tapping into the new mid-town tax increment financing). He and 11 others protested the project at the recent grand opening ceremonies of the new parking garage and has also started a petition drive against the project. His concerns are: -There is a lack of grocery stores between 38th Street and 64th Street so city tax incentives should be used instead in this "food desert" area instead of Broad Ripple. -Does Whole Foods (who Nehrling thinks is the grocer) need $5 million in "local Hoosier tax dollars" to build another store just two miles from its existing location? The 35,000 square foot store is too large for the Village as well. -The project at 5 stories (and 2 acres) is too large for the Broad Ripple Village area. -At 85 feet, the project would be too tall (current zoning is for 50 feet) as well. "Broad Ripple was always a village with small stores," Rudy told The Broad Ripple Gazette. The new TIF is to help neighborhoods that need help such as 38th and Fall Creek, he continued. Nehrling said less than one month after the TIF was enacted, Browning Investments is now proposing this project and asking for taxpayer incentives. (Other groceries in the area include the Fresh Market on College, 2 Targets (at Glendale and Nora) which now sell food, 3 Kroger Stores (Broad Ripple Village, 71st and Keystone, and on 86th Street),Walmart on Keystone, 2 Marsh stores (on 86th Street and in the Glendale area ), and the Whole Foods in Nora Plaza.) Whole Foods Midwest corporate office spokesperson Keith Stewart said the company does not comment on proposed projects until a lease has been signed. He did confirm the Nora store is being upgraded to better serve customers. Per Brooke Klejnot, Executive Director of the Broad Ripple Village Association, the group has not taken a position on the proposal. However, the group would like to see something done at the former Shell gas station site which she said needs a lot of environmental clean up. She said the project would go before the Board of Zoning Appeals on June 6. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Pedal & Park at Broad Ripple Art Fair

For the 12th year in a row, Pedal & Park will provide free bicycle parking for the Broad Ripple Art Fair. The bicycle corral will be located next to the Monon Trail north of 65th Street, adjacent to CrossFit Broad Ripple and Howald Heating & Air, and will be open Saturday, May 18, 10 a.m.–6 p.m. and Sunday, May 19, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Bike to the fair and park for free, just one block from the gate! Pedal & Park works just like a coat check and volunteers will watch your bike while you have fun. This is the 13th season for the Pedal & Park program and it has parked more than 33,000 bikes.

ARPO Dog Olympics will be held at Broad Ripple Park

The 8th annual ARPO Dog Olympics will be held at Broad Ripple Park on Saturday, May 18th where local dogs will compete in events designed for almost any dog. Events range from an athletic obstacle course and T-shirt race to a more passive shedding or barking contests. Participants are sure to find an event that will fit their four footed pet. Participants and spectators will be able to meet Q-95's Dean Metcalf and visit information tables from local animal related businesses. Adoptable animals from local rescue groups and Indianapolis Animal Care and Control will also be available to meet potential adopters in this fun and relaxed environment. Proceeds from this event will directly benefit the local homeless pets rescued by ARPO, The Alliance for Responsible Pet Ownership. ARPO is an all breed pet rescue group staffed 100% by volunteers. Pets rescued by ARPO are kept in foster homes where they receive high quality veterinary care, training and most importantly, love and affection while they wait to find a home. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 9 in the left section of the top row which contains 1-3-4. The 9 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right and left of the 3. The 9 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 2. The 9 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 3. The only place left is the square in the upper-left corner, diagonally to the left of the 3. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Random Ripplings If you travel up Westfield Boulevard, you have probably noticed lots of construction equipment along the river by the Kennington Legion Post. In the past few months a wall of iron pilings have been driven into the bed of the White River just below the Broad Ripple dam. Some of the pilings that are higher can be seen sticking out of the water in the middle of the left side of this picture. In the next few weeks the dam will be reinforced, section by section, without blocking the flow of the river.

Boston Stands as One…and One for ALL! As I tightened my laces waiting in my starting corral at the 117th Boston Marathon on April 15th 2013, a nervous feeling ran through my body. You see, contrary to popular belief, no matter how many races I have done in the past, every time I (and probably every athlete) still get jitters before a big event. However, I don’t mind them and try to turn my nerves into adrenaline….The starting gun sounded…and we were off! The Boston Marathon is the most challenging, while at the same time, my favorite course for many reasons. It runs through seven quaint Massachusetts towns with amazing crowd support the entire way. The race is always on Patriots Day which by tradition falls on a Monday. Patriots Day is basically the equivalent of the Super Bowl in Boston. Also referred to as “Marathon Monday”, nearly all Bostonians are off work and emphatically supporting the runners (often with a tad of partying involved, of course). The supporters are out for hours tirelessly encouraging and even handing out orange slices, candy and water. I cannot explain enough how much the crowd support is appreciated and helps with motivation during the challenging hills along the course. I’m not sure words can express how amazing it is to see how electric the city is as a whole during this weekend. Red Sox gear is an undeniable staple at all times.... The adored team also plays that day, of course on their Patriots Day; so most likely, if you live in Boston, you are either cheering on the runners or the Red Sox! Either way, I am amazed by this city every time I visit. The sheer PRIDE “Bostonians” have is unprecedented by any other place I have had the privilege to see. One of my favorite personal traditions during the marathon is to hang on the right side of the course and slap as many kids hands as possible. I get the biggest kick out of a kid’s reaction when a runner slaps his/her hand. It’s as if the runner was the president when they hit their hand and they beam with glee at the interaction! Another tradition I have is to dedicate each mile to someone that is important to me in my life and adorn the list on my arms via a black sharpie. During their mile, I think about that person and what they mean to me. It really makes the time “run” by! My truly favorite mile is between 12 and 13 (about half way) where it passes through the adorable town of Wellesley… home of the girls school Wellesley College. Thousands of young and hilarious women are screaming their lungs out, in bright red lipstick, BEGGING to kiss runners. They are in rare form, and it is clear that this day is verrrryyyy important to them. I LOVE IT! This year after passing the ear drum torching scene, a guy turned to me and with a big red smacker on his cheek said “That is the best mile ever!” and I replied with an agreeing laugh. I’m not going to lie; it was my hardest marathon to date. I had an injury last year, and hadn’t run this distance since. However, I mentally made it to Boylston Street and during the last 3 blocks of the challenging run I slapped about 10 more kids’ hands on my way to the finish line. Woo-Hoo! I was finished! As I grabbed my water, medal and energy bars I thanked the volunteers and received dozens of “Congratulations!” from these generous people. As I gimped my way to my gear check bus, I was asked by several of them if I was okay…and I remember thinking that the organizers of this famous race do such an amazing job and take spectacular care of the runners. I grabbed my stuff, and called my husband. He told me that my sister, Jenny, who was also running, was due

to finish soon. With relief, I headed to her bus excited to see her. My runner tracker on my phone dinged that she indeed was finished, and in an effort to not stiffen up by waiting there I decided to slowly head toward the finish in hopes to find her. As I walk facing the finish line, my eyes are fixed in the opposite direction than most others are heading, hoping to find her. Then all of the sudden….BOOM! “A firework?”, I think. But I suddenly realize that it isn’t the case, seeing the large smoke cloud above, I notice that it is just inside the finish line. And then another…BOOM! I start walking backwards in disbelief of what I know this really meant. They were bombs. I start shaking and wonder when and where the next one will detonate. Police start running and yelling “Move!” Delirious post-marathon runners are understandably confused and not sure what to do and most seem to be unaware of the enormity of what happened and is happening about 2 blocks away. All the sudden, the normal, somewhat “nerdy” post-marathon finishers’ banter that typically includes: time splits, energy gel usage and whether or not they walked or ran up the infamous Heartbreak Hill quickly faded. We all began to realize that the situation is dangerous; strangers asking whoever to use their phone… frantically calling loved ones, sirens are blaring, people are being shuffled out of Boylston and in the matter of a couple minutes, a beautiful day of Boston celebration quickly turned into a nightmare. I quickly called my husband and panickly told him that something very bad happened, and at that moment to my extreme relief, Jenny called me. I obviously hadn’t seen her pass in the chaos. When we met up, she told me that she heard that the subways were closed. Since we were staying in the town of Quincy, 8 miles outside of the city, we felt very vulnerable, confused and to top it off, freezing. We were directed to a station about a mile away. My mom called and was concerned about us getting on the subway. Although I agreed, I also knew we didn’t have a choice. When we finally returned to our hotel, the TVs in the lobby were frantically reporting on the reality of the horrible events and we were overcome with sorrow, anger, guilt and fear. I couldn’t stop thinking about the last 10 hand slaps from the glossy eyed kids and the stands full of people who were selflessly there for US and how several of them were now in the hospital with life threatening injuries, or worse. The past weeks have been very difficult and the support of our friends, family and clients has been immeasurable. Witnessing something like this has certainly changed my perspective on life in many ways. We may never understand exactly why or how something like this can happen. What can bring people to do such a horrible thing to so many people is unanswerable. There is no sense in this. While this event will change the history of Boston and the marathon forever, I deeply hope (and know to be true) that it will not change the heart of that awesome city and the pride that the people have for being Bostonians. It’s May and time to garden. As a youngster, I looked forward to May Day (May 1) as the occasion to pick spring flowers and fill small baskets or paper cones that were stealthily delivered to my mother and neighbors. The recipient was not to know the giver’s identity, but the secret was often not so secret. When I was a bit older, my parents took me to Earlham College for its festive May Day pageant with a May Pole dance and the crowning of a May Queen. Oh, did I love that sight after a long winter of gray skies and monotone landscapes! Now, those May Day recollections are inspiration for a new interest. I have welcomed spring gardening ready to unleash imagination on fairy gardens. Much of the joy of creating these miniature gardens is sharing them with others. I now have two young neighbor girls, my granddaughter, a friend and her niece all making their own gardens. No two fairy gardens are alike. Each gardener has chosen her own container according to the vision she has for her garden. I am using a cracked birdbath; some chose baskets; others selected random terra cotta pots. This year we are having a ceremonial planting party and fairy tea — great fun for all. With fresh soil, a selection of miniature plants, and a few small features, gardens get built in just a few hours. We spend time scouring the yard to find natural items such as moss, stones, unusual twigs, and seed pods. For ponds, small rocks or sand define the edges. I brought sand back from Florida so one of the gardens could include a beach for a tiny sandcastle I also found on vacation. Other small items and fairies (not angels) from Goodwill and garage sales are in our materials arsenal. I now have a box filled with all kind of goodies that afford seasonal and theme accents. We begin by putting down a layers of plastic peanuts or gravel in the bottom of the container to allow good drainage. Then place a layer of window screen over the gravel and then fill the container with soil. Those with baskets have to line them with sheet moss. After the ground is tamped down and sprinkled with water, the hardscape begins. I made a trellis for my dish while my friend purchased a beautiful arch. We have benches, chairs and tables, gourd houses, bird baths, ponds, and fences. Then a wooden spoon is great to use to dig a hole to adds plants. I even use curly willow starts for trees in my garden. Carefully the soil is opened, and seedlings are patted into place. The final step is adding rocks, sands, or colorful stones for paths in the garden. I have also made May Poles with colorful ribbons, adding pennants and battery-operated lights. As you see, it’s all up to one’s imagination to determine what a fairy garden can be. I usually don’t put a fairy in my garden until later in the summer. I want as many fairies to come as possible to my specially designed garden. Who knows who might show up? And remember if you see a fairy, you cannot tell. They might flee if you do! We celebrate our new gardens with a tea featuring miniature cookies and succulent ripe fruits: strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries. Lemon cookies are a must because I think fairies would also enjoy something tart and sweet. The tea is herbal with a hint of honey. The day ends on a perfect note with everyone having a charming garden to take home so fairies will come to their yards.
