The 40th annual Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association (MKNA) Home and Garden Tour is Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. As one of the oldest vintage residential tours in Indiana, creative interior design and recent renovations are reflected in each house. Katie Dolan is the event’s Public Relations Chair. She and her husband Tom are MKNA residents. "This is a particularly exciting year for the Meridian-Kessler Home & Garden Tour - it's the Tour's 40th Anniversary! For 40 years, the Home and Garden Day Tour has showcased hundreds of homes – from large, prestigious estates to cozy bungalows and cottages. It is a remarkable milestone for this unique and historic neighborhood. As in years' past, visitors will enjoy strolling the treelined streets, enchanted by the neighborhood's charm and variety. Visitors will observe firsthand the pride and passion Meridian-Kessler residents feel for their homes and neighborhood. It is an event I love to support!" she explained. MKNA’s Home & Garden Tour and Twilight Tour & Silent Auction are unique opportunities to meet new neighbors, renew acquaintances and visit one of the city’s most historic and scenic neighborhoods.
2013 - part one The rain held off for the 2013 Broad Ripple Art Fair. It was cloudy on Saturday and the hot sun shone on Sunday. There was plenty of good art, good music, and good food for everyone. Bikers used the Pedal & Park on the Monon Trail. Your editor used the free shuttle bus from Glendale Town Center. The Gazette had three photographers on the scene, so our coverage will take more than one issue!

This series is just another reason that I love our community so much. Broad Ripple based, Musical Family Tree is hosting a series of Listen Local concerts. MFT is an online archive of Indiana music from the punk era to now. Have you always wondered what happened to your favorite band from Muncie when you were in college? A great place to start your research is musicalfamilytree.com and all of the music is available for free download. The awesomeness starts Friday, May 24; the food trucks and beer will be available starting at 6:00 and the music starts at 7:00. The first concert features Margot and the Nuclear So and So's, Gentleman Caller, and Everything, Now!. If you’ve heard any of these bands you know how fabulous this lineup is. If you haven’t, trust me – go and be prepared to fall in love with all three bands. All three groups (and Margot keyboardist Cameron McGill) are busy preparing to release new albums this year. Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s have a huge national fan base and are often on tour. They are close to releasing their fifth studio record. Bloomington-based Gentleman Caller is led by Kenny Childers, unarguably one of the most vibrant contributors to Indiana's music scene in the last 20 years. Everything, Now! promises a one-time-only enactment of its debut LP, “Sunshine of Doom” to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the record’s release. All three bands feature original music, great musicians, and buckets fun. Everyone from your kiddos to your grandparents will appreciate the music. Mark your calendars for the rest of the series: Friday, June 14 – Art Adams, Apache Dropout, Thee Tsunamis Friday, June 28 – We Are Hex, Burnt Ones, 2150’s Friday, July 19 – TBA Friday, August 9 – TBA Friday, August 23 – TBA All of the shows are family-friendly and pay-what-you-want. Japandroids is a two piece band from Vancouver, BC and have been playing since 2006. They originally intended to be a trio but Brian King and David Prowse decided to forgo the lead singer and share the duties. They keep it simple with one guitar, a set of drums, and two voices. With minimal gear they sound like a larger band, running the gamut of rock and roll music. A Place to Bury Strangers is a New York–based noise rock (liberal use of dissonance and feedback) band. The three-piece band plays a heavy, atmospheric influenced blend of psychedelic rock, shoegaze and space rock. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Broad Ripple pool opens May 25 for two months By Bill Malcolm
bill@broadripplegazette.com Grab your swim suit and towel. The Broad Ripple Pool is open as of May 25. Located in Broad Ripple Park, the pool is open Saturdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sundays 12 noon to 6 p.m., Wednesdays 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and other days from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday nights and later on Saturday are good times to avoid the crowds. But don't delay. As with last year, the pool closes on August 4! Per Maureen Faul, spokesperson for IndyParks, the early closing is because many life guards and other staff return to school. (Prior to 2005, the pool was open weekends until Labor Day.) Faul says they manage all 12 city pools and many schools return to school in early August leaving them with no choice but to close. The fees are as follows: free for ages 2 and under, just $3 for adults under 55 years old, and $2 for youth (3-17 years old) and adults over 55. The Broad Ripple Park pool offers swim lessons, a swim team, and water aerobics. Call for registration @ 327-7161 (Broad Ripple Family Center). Finally, June 18 will be the "World's Largest Swim Lesson" event. Is there not a better way to spend the day at the pool along the banks of the White River? Also for your splash non-pool enjoyment, take the kids to the 61st/Broadway Park "Spray Ground" at 6051 Broadway. This facility is open until Labor Day (since there are no life guards). This park features tennis courts, a volleyball court, and a spray of water for the kids in the play ground area. (Bring clothes that can get wet.) And best of all, it's free. For more information on all 12 city pools, visit www.indyparks.org or call the Broad Ripple Pool at 327-7333. (Tell them to consider staying open weekends through mid-September like they did years ago. Given Indy's hot August weather, certainly a life guard or two would be available weekends.) Also just north of the area is the Monon Center outdoor pool and water park. This facility is open through Labor Day and has a day rate so you don't have to be a resident to enjoy. They also have an indoor pool and weight room -- plus a large park with trails and other facilities. It's time once again to celebrate Indiana wines at Vintage Indiana. It's the 14th year for the day of wine, food, and music in Military Park on Saturday, June 1, 11am-7pm. This year 28 wineries will have tents offering samples of a variety of wines, hard ciders, ports, and distilled spirits. Try new vintners like Grateful Goat, Monkey Hollow and Wildcat Creek. Visit old favorites Winzerwald, Satek, Turtle Run and French Lick. Sample wines then buy bottles to enjoy on site or take home. There's a handy drive up pick up area where you can leave your wines until you are ready to leave the grounds. A dozen food vendors offering the likes of ribs, pizza, burgers, ice cream and kettle korn will be available to nosh in between sips. An artisans area with wine related goodies, locally produced food products, and clothing is a great way to take a break from sampling the over 300 wines available to taste that day. The music lineup is top notch too with Josh Gracin, Cari Ray and Jenni De Voe performing throughout the day. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Warfleigh Neighborhood Association Picnic
The fifth annual neighborhood picnic sponsored by the Warfleigh Neighborhood Assn is Saturday, June 8, from 5 - 9 pm, in a new location - the parking lot behind St. Paul's Church, 6050 N. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 5 in the left section of the middle row which contains 3-6-7-8-9. The 5 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The 5 in the center section eliminates the space between the 3-6. The only place left is directly to the left of the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. As an owner of a pet supply store in the Broad Ripple area I couldn’t help but notice all the attention Rudy Nehrling of The Good Earth is stirring about “Keep Broad Ripple Local”. That was the message written on a sign that he showed up with at the mayor’s ribbon cutting ceremony at the new parking garage in early May. Ever since, a full protest has gone into action, of a proposal to develop a Whole Foods Grocery located at 6349 College. Good Earth Natural Foods, Inc. is at 6350 Guilford and has been for 42 years. The five story development that includes a parking garage and apartments will be only 100 yards from Rudy’s door. Rudy, who now operates The Good Earth, is the son-in-law of Bob Landman, former owner, who died unexpectedly in 2008. I am a big advocate of shopping local and in fact was a charter sponsor of the initiative Midtown Loves Local which has proliferated little orange window stickers at local shops. After reading other media reports and meeting one of his employees I called him in a show of support. I can’t imagine how I would react if a 35,000 square foot Pet Smart or Pet Co built 100 yards from my door. That very thing is happening all over the country and small independent pet stores are going and gone. I truly felt his pain and wanted to hear his story. First off let me just say that 42 years in business is a lot of history and service and is a major contribution to the Broad Ripple Community. The Village Association owes a debt of support to this member. You may remember Minneapolis-based Supervalu-Sunflower Market which opened at 1021 Broad Ripple Avenue in 2006. They specialized in organic food and natural products until they closed in 2008. It was a rough ride for the Good Earth’s Bob Landman who did everything he could to keep his business alive while everyone flocked to the new store. He weathered it by cutting staff’s hours, taking no pay and cashing in his life insurance policy. Sadly that policy was needed soon after. But Rudy said he still paid his bills and nobody was let go. Today The Good Earth provides an income for his widow and 19 other people. But the good fight for The Good Earth has come again and this time, these years later, it’s become a fight for the community and all local businesses because Broad Ripple is mostly all small, locally owned independents. Sunflower Market was only 4,000 to 5,000 sq. feet compared to the proposed Texas based Whole Foods at 35,000. Taken from The Good Earth’s Facebook page, the protest is about the fact that Whole Foods is an out-of-state Giant with an expanding store already located just two miles north in Nora. To add fuel to the fiery protest the city is considering using the new Midtown TIF to assist in giving millions of taxpayers’ dollars to the developer. This TIF was created for improvement including infrastructure in neighborhoods that need it most in the Midtown district, from 38th and Fall Creek to 70th and College. One such block that has been seeking TIF assistance is 49th and College which has been partially bulldozed, sits barren and has been blighted for many years. Supporters and developers of that corner have been denied TIF while projects downtown have moved forward. Protesters do not think TIF is warranted in Broad Ripple for this project. Rudy told me that there is vacancy in every direction of him. Rents have been soaring with the popularity of Broad Ripple and small independents can’t pay. The space at the SE corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue has been vacant for a while. Many protestors, activists, business owners and residents feel that allowing corporate chains into the village removes the quaintness, charm and uniqueness of the community. They claim the height of the apartments is out of scale for the area. A petition is online and at The Good Earth with over 2,000 signatures. According to Rudy it will be in other stores as well. Upon viewing it I found some good comments. “Put it downtown” said one. Another stated “Neighborhoods like Irvington, Broad Ripple and Fountain Square are the only ones with any soul in this city. Don’t ruin it.” Soul. Yes, Broad Ripple has soul. I just never thought of it that way. I ponder what will happen to Johnny’s Market this time. My husband who was the American Legion Post #3 Commander at the time helped him secure the deal to set up his market on their property, all those years ago. If I am correct it appears from drawings that that part of the property would become another parking garage. Taken from the Midtown Loves Local website: Midtown Loves Local is a campaign supported by locally owned, independent businesses in Midtown Indianapolis to create and build awareness that spending locally sustains the local economy, keeps the community unique, creates jobs, and is ultimately an investment in the success of Midtown. • For each dollar you spend at an independent, locally owned Midtown business, approximately 80% goes back to the community versus about 35% from a franchise or chain — and 0% from the Internet. • By supporting local businesses, you’re helping our community retain its character. Many Midtown businesses are owned by people who live in this community. When the businesses thrive, they have a stake in Midtown’s future and are unlikely to leave. • Small local businesses are the largest employer nationally and, in Midtown, provide the most jobs to residents.
The re-zoning public hearing is scheduled for June 13th. I just hope the Midtown people are there to support the many Broad Ripple businesses that sport their window decals. It’s community teamwork. Who’s On First? When you head into just about any gym, it is pretty obvious what each person “enjoys” or a guess a better word would be “prioritizes” for their workout. Meaning, the gal jamming away on the treadmill with a smile on her face probably enjoys cardio more than the guy grunting with curling huge dumbbells that hasn’t stepped on a cardio machine for ages, and vice versa. Muscular strength and endurance are two essential keys to optimal fitness, however most of us prefer one significantly over the other (or neither at all!). Of course it is rare to have these components preferred equally in any given person and that is most often fine; given that he/she engages in the recommended minimum of both. Therefore, clients often ask me “Which should come first, cardio or strength?” My answer is one of three: Cardio. Strength. Both at the same time. Well, that probably wasn’t confusing right?! Let me explain. Let’s go to the extremes: You cannot expect to reach your ultimate potential as a weightlifter and marathoner at the same time. Too much strength exercise can slow your endurance gains, and logging hours and hours of cardio per week will hinder your ability to build and/or keep muscle. Most people do not fall into either extreme category however and desire a reasonable combination of cardio ability and muscle mass. From what I researched, findings show that the key to which you choose to do first is simple: start with the activity that is most important to you. If you want bigger and defined muscles, hit the weights first. If you are training for an endurance event such as a 10K, focus on cardio before your strength session. There is an enzyme called AMP kinase which is called the “master switch” as it controls both the cellular adaptations for either bigger muscles or better endurance. Apparently how you start your workout that given session determines which way the switch will be set; without changing back and forth in the same session. While I agree with some of these findings, I also find in a bit hard to believe that the switch is “locked” into that setting for the entire workout. I feel that the switch is never exactly in the middle but more so leaning toward one side or the other. And why must the two genres of fitness be so compartmental? For example, High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is a great mix of cardio, endurance, strength and power. And many people find that it makes the workouts fly by since it breaks it up into smaller circuits. So, instead of doing all cardio and all weights in two big chunks, HIIT alternates between the two for gains on both ends of the spectrum and in between. Example of a HIIT workout: 1 minute jumping jacks 15 pushups 1 minute mountain climbers 15 deadlifts 30 seconds high knees 15 squat presses 30 second butt kicks 20 reverse lunges each leg 1 minute side shuffles 1 minute plank If you repeat this circuit 5 times, you will have a 45-60 minute full body workout that will challenge you and likely not bore you. Another piece of advice (and one I should take more often) if you are looking to improve fitness: do what you are not good at. It is easy to do something we are good at because, well, we are good at it! What you are already good at is probably not where you are lacking in fitness. It’s in the areas we may struggle in that can use more attention and challenge your body and metabolism. Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. alan@broadripplegazette.com The new mixed-use parking structure on the site of the old Marathon station at Westfield Boulevard and College Avenue includes about 25,000 square feet of retail space and 344 parking spaces. The parking garage portion of the structure is managed by Newpoint Parking, located in Broad Ripple between the canal and Brugge Brasserie, at 6311 Westfield Boulevard [F6 on map]. Newpoint started in Broad Ripple 4 1/2 years ago and manages parking at several locations in the Village and downtown. I interviewed Todd Morris and John Sutton of Newpoint about the workings of the new garage. The garage in unmanned. I asked what happens if there is a problem with the gate/payment systems. Todd explained that there is an intercom system that calls directly to Newpoint. Newpoint has several employees who are out and about each day and can respond quickly to a problem. "It is so sophisticated that if anything goes wrong, we get a text instantly," said Morris. "I just got a text that one of the construction guys opened the gate to exit," added Sutton. "It can also say that there is a ticket jam or the machine doesn't have any change." If a customer has trouble getting in or out through a gate, they can hit the call button and an operator will answer 24 hours. Newpoint has the ability to remotely sense any issues with the equipment and can control the gates if needed. "We chose an Indiana company in Fort Wayne to supply all of the gates and credit card machines. That company has been very good to work with during the garage soft opening as we worked the bugs out of the system," said Morris. The rates at the garage as effective 24 hours a day, 7 days a week: 0-1 hour $2, 1-2 hours $3, 2-3 hours $4, 3-6 hours $6, and $9 for each additional 12 hour period. This makes for a good solution when a car needs to be left in Broad Ripple overnight allowing the driver to take a cab home. Previously, the driver would return the next day and find a pink parking ticket on the windshield.

Bring on the Bales Thanks to an experiment last year, I have a “go” for this gardening season. Every year I try to do something different — plan a theme garden, put in a new shrub, try an uncommon herb, or even get ambitious with roses (to me a truly fussy flower). Last year’s new venture was straw bale gardening. Research on the web piqued my curiosity. This kind of gardening had all the markers of being the answer for me. It doesn’t require tilling the ground, getting down on my knees, nor doing much weeding. Living in a heavily shaded area, few spots in my yard are sunny. We had to cut down a 40-foot tulip tree, this finally giving us a 20’x 20’ area with at least 6 hours of sun. Unfortunately there were still tree roots galore. Straw bale gardening offered an enticing solution to all obstacles. I decided to use four straw bales in my first attempt, avoiding hay both because it sprouts too many weeds and its seeds compete with plantings. I arranged the bales in the sunny spot ― one by itself and the other three forming a pyramid with two on the bottom and one stacked on top. Online surfing shows many creative ideas for straw bale garden design: long rows like a hedge, bases under arbors, u-shapes, circles, etc. I quickly realized the placement of bales is important because after they’ve been soaked to receive plants, moving them is problematic. This year I’m expanding things and lining my sunny driveway with bales. The only catch is they must be within reach of a watering hose. Bales need to be prepared before planting. I let mine sit for almost 2 weeks after I bring them home so they begin decomposing and warm to an internal temperature that’s conducive to growing plants. Once the plants are in place, I water the bales for the first 3 days to keep them damp. The next 3 days involves sprinkling them with ½ cup nitrogen fertilizer (34-0-0) and watering the fertilizer into the bales. On days 7-9, I fertilize with ¼ cup on each bale and continue watering. Then after Day 10, I check the internal temperature of the bales to see that it’s about 100 degrees. To plant seedlings, I use a hand trowel to dig holes in the bale. I put commercial garden soil with fertilizer in the holes. It’s not good to use yard soil as it can contaminate the bale with weeds and bacteria. Once the start-up process has been accomplished, routine watering is about all that’s required. Soaker hoses work great to allow water to trickle down through the bales. Another hint is to plant impatiens on the sides of the bale. When they wilt, I know bales need water. Some plants that work well with straw bale gardening include tomatoes (will need to stake), peppers, cucumbers, squash, pumpkin, zucchini, lettuce, strawberries and beans. I also put basil around each plant. This year I’m putting a bale planted with pumpkins on each side of my door. It’s fun to watch the vines grow almost a foot each day. You, too, may find enjoyment in trying straw bale gardening instead of or as a complement to containers, raised beds or traditional yard plots. Being able to harvest fresh vegetables right in our own yards is a pleasure that’s catching on like wildfire. Jump on the bandwagon, and get growing! Kilroy’s in Broad Ripple Meet Mike Augustinos, General Manager of Kilroy’s in Broad Ripple. The bar/restaurant will celebrate its one-year anniversary on June 13. “We are very excited about the success we have had and about the positive comments we’ve received from the community,” Mike said. If you haven’t been to Kilroy’s you should try some of the local favorites. “People are familiar with our product and our breadsticks in particular, which is our number one seller. Our long islands and some of our other drinks are also popular, which we brought up here from Bloomington.”

Quality in employees is also very important, he says. “Our staff is very versatile, and they have an understanding of everything that goes on. Teamwork and team building is what we focus on.” “One of the biggest things in customer service is consistency,” Mike says. He assures customers that if they order a drink one night then come back a different night and order the same drink, the product and service consistency will be there. Because Broad Ripple is centrally located, Kilroy’s gets customers from all around Indianapolis. “We have a loyal, local customer base, whereas downtown is more convention driven,” he says. Although Kilroy’s is a Bloomington-based bar, they still support Butler University due to its proximity. “We had the Butler mascots and ESPN radio here when Butler was in the NCAA tournament. We support our home team here, which is Butler.” There was a lot of resistance before the Kilroy’s in Broad Ripple was built because there was a fear of it being just another bar. But Mike says it is not just another bar. “We have a superior product, and we welcome everyone. We feel that we have added a lot to the Broad Ripple community.”
