Veterans Antiquities - 46th & Monon By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Veterans Antiquities creates and sells unique décor items for homes and gardens. Created by the non-profit organization Veterans in Action (VIA), they are located at 1140 East 46th Street on the Monon Trial. Director of Program Development Jeff Piper described his background and how he joined Veterans Antiquities in the summer of 2012. “I am a non-combat Vietnam era veteran. I was injured in a training incident at 19 when I was stateside and spent a little time in a wheelchair. As I got older, I didn’t know that I was disabled. I was told to go home from the Veterans Administration, take my pain medication and don’t do anything. My son and I started using recycled material to build birdhouses and have been doing this for the past six or seven years. After several years of creating birdhouse kits and taking them out to veterans in wheelchairs, a vision came to me to have a central location for veterans to create them and have them expand to other items. Upon my training injury, I was denied my mission, but through making these birdhouses, I’ve been on a mission ever since, creating jobs and a facility for disabled vets. This mission has become a gallery, a mall-type setting for creating items from salvaged goods whenever possible. It’s a win-win situation, helping veterans and Mother Nature. With the pain, there’s a limitation to what you can do, but there’s a strong medicine. I didn’t know that the therapy of doing this would help me,” Piper explained. “Our birdhouses are made from cedar and recycled fence boards. I’ve saved over two tons of license plates from landfills. For every license plate that we reuse, we’re reclaiming five feet of fence board. Tillman’s Trucks & Vans, (located on the west side), gives us recycled plates as well,” he noted. Items are created from salvaged wood, 1140 East 46th St metal and other materials that are often 80 to 100 years old. Inquiries about them can be answered by calling 602-7678 or at: info@ veteransantiquities.webs.com veteransantiquities.com. They are open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed Sunday through Tuesday. A meeting with a local businessman helped make Piper’s vision a reality. “I was truly blessed to talk to Chuck Mack, a fellow veteran, (a Marine), because he had a similar mission. He owns Moe & Johnny’s. I was organizing the ‘Fish with a Vet Day’ at the Indiana State Fair, but the goal was to converse with him and we didn’t know we had a shared vision. Our visions were running very close to parallel. We toured this facility and Chuck asked me if this place would work. We opened on February 25th. He had beer, burgers and a few bucks to put into it and it couldn’t go wrong,” Piper mentioned. His involvement with other non-profit entities has also benefitted others. “I started OvrThere (www.ovrthere.com) known as ‘Our Vets Remembered through Environmental Rehabilitative Enterprises’ for six years. That was our first place to plug into this place. It was a grass roots effort and totally self-funded. OvrThere is where the birdhouse building started and my whole goal is to keep lightweight projects for guys in wheelchairs. I sponsor fishing trips with city kids and fished with over 100 kids on Monday (May 20) from Crooked Creek Elementary School and work hand-in-hand with local PTAs or any local group of kids. A girl caught her first fish Monday and it was a great experience for her. We fish on the east side at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park. My son, Samuel, started fishing at 16 months and could steer a tractor at 18 months. Through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources’ ‘Go Fishin’ program found at http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/7508.htm, he’s a certified fishing instructor at the Indiana State Fair’s ‘Fish with a Vet Day.’ On Thursdays, we have a group of veterans creating their choice of medium. We’ll have a woodcarver, painter, somebody sketching or

There’s a lot of news in the Ripple:

CORNELL AVENUE RESURFACING TO ADDRESS DRAINAGE ISSUES -- Cornell Avenue will see resurfacing that will also address the drainage issues in that area. The Indianapolis Department of Public Works will be resurfacing from the Canal dead end to 67th Street. The project scope includes replacing sidewalks and curbs where necessary and adding angled parking. Due to the extensive drainage repairs the street will need to be closed a block at a time hopefully for no more than a couple of days at a time. At this time they are looking for this project to begin middle to late July 2013. lm co al

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Son Volt with Colonel Ford Saturday, June 8 The Vogue 5259 College Avenue - 21+, doors 6:30, show 7:15

I interviewed Jay Farrar (via telephone) in March and didn’t faint. Victory for me. I’ve been a big fan of Jay’s music since his Uncle Tupelo days and first saw Son Volt at The Vogue in September 1997. I was interviewing him for the magazine, Ghettoblaster, about Son Volt’s newest record, Honky Talk. I’m really enjoying the record and I’m sure the live show will be terrific. The Vogue show will be just the ninth on Son Volt’s aggressive 47 show tour. You should go. I broke the first rule of interviewing when I was speaking to Jay – I talked about me and my love of his music and his concerts I’ve seen. He was lovely enough to tell me that he was looking forward to playing at The Vogue again (the last time Son Volt played the venue was 2005) and being in Indianapolis.

Stand Up for School On Wheels featuring Rebecca Corry Thursday, June 13 Crackers Comedy Club 6281 N College Ave. 21+, 7:00 pm, $20 to benefit School On Wheels

It is always good to laugh! The very funny Rebecca Corry will be at Crackers on Broad Ripple Avenue for a good cause. School On Wheels works with homeless children by providing tutoring in shelters and after school programs, advocating for their educational opportunities, and providing school uniforms and supplies. All of the proceeds of the evening will be donated to School On Wheels. I hadn’t been to a comedy club for decades and recently saw a show at Crackers. Now I wonder why it took so long to get back! Laugher is good for the soul – and for School On Wheels.

Jude Fest Saturday, June 15 The Irving Theater 5505 East Washington Street all ages, $10 suggested donation, 11:00 am to 10:00 pm

Many of you know Jude Odell and don’t realize it. She is truly multi-talented; I’m overwhelmed trying to figure out how to describe her. Jude’s figurative clay work has won awards at juried art shows and museum events. She has provided

children’s art programming since 1978 and has been with the Indianapolis Art Center since 1992. Jude has worked with thousands of children and has shepherded young artists in creating vibrant public art and mural projects from Saint Joan of Arc School to Huehuetenango, Guatemala. I know Jude best through music and I consider her one of Indiana’s musical treasures. She is a genius at recalling traditional mountain and country songs. And she’s good enough to teach the likes of me. A wonderful group, calling themselves Friends of Jude have organized this event to help Jude with her expenses so she can concentrate on her health and recovery from her surgery earlier this year and ongoing treatments. It has been pert-near two years since Alice Chalmers and The Stick a Cork in Your Jug Band has taken the stage. I’m excited to dust off my cowboy boots, fluff my crinoline, and put new ribbon in my Smith-Corona for Jude Fest. You read that correctly – I play the typewriter. As you might guess, the band features interesting instrumentation. In addition to the typewriter, you’ll be treated to Tammy Lieber playing washtub bass, Stasia Demos playing accordion, Holly Smith Garrett playing violin, Joni Back-Bubenzer playing ukulele, and Jude Odell herself playing banjo and guitar. The fun and traditional songs we play lend themselves perfectly to the beautiful voices of everyone (but me – can’t sing a lick). ACATSACIYJB is only one of the seventeen bands playing. Not only will the day be packed with music but there will be food and drinks available for purchase, a silent auction, and good old fun and conversation. As I was typing the lineup it occurred to me that some of the nicest, most talented people that I know are playing. It will be fun to have all of that goodness in one place! I’ll see you there. 11:30 - The Half Step Sisters featuring D. building birdhouses or making jewelry. I learn from them as much as they learn from me. We plan to use this facility to showcase artists whose work will appear on the walls with wine tasting events, coffee or whatever the crowd desires. Sometimes veterans visit and just talk with each other. We’re getting involved with agencies who provide housing and employment,” he said. His other venture, www.working4green.org, “is envisioned as a tobe-registered, Indianapolis-based nonprofit seeded by Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC) that contributes to community and workforce development in neighborhoods both by coordinating job training and by delivering services, beginning first in the deconstruction market." Vance Wilson is one of the artists whose work appears at Veterans Antiquities. “I do everything from drawing and painting to woodworking and sculpture. I make jewelry out of computer parts. We’re working on getting contracted jobs for tables, chicken coops, crates and whatever else anybody might want out of recycled materials. We’re also currently recycling military fatigues and burlap coffee bags and turning them into purses and pillows,” he described. Wilson also runs the warehouse and does production. Discussing one of his current projects, “I’m taking old gold clubs and turning them into lamps.” The Louisiana native moved to Tennessee and joined the Navy where he enlisted in the Seabees and served in Guam, Japan, Diego Garcia, Kuwait and Iraq. “When I came here, the warehouse was a scattering of things everywhere, but I assessed the situation, organized and set up shelving and de-cluttered it. Now you can go back there and see what you need to work with. I’m grateful to Jeff for giving me the opportunity to come in and help,” he emphasized. Another local artist, Jeff Crist said, “I mostly paint abstracts and mixed media. I build and stretch my own canvasses and do a lot of concept canvasses, like unique ones that wrap around. The one I did that wrapped around a corner was in here and sold within 24 hours. One side was ‘heaven’ with the sun coming up with birds flying and other side was ‘hell’ which was dark.” Crist served in the Army and medically retired after 12 years. “I was born in Washington State, but moved to Indiana when I was nine,” he added. A flag motif that Crist created will be permanently displayed at the VA Hospital’s D Wing where their Healing Arts Wing is being renovated. The stars are made from oregano paint and the colors include cayenne pepper mixed in with the paint. Quotes from General George Patton and FDR appear in the patriotic theme. Dennis Rice mentioned, “I’ve known Jeff for about 37 years and served with some of his family in the Army. When he started doing this, I helped him make some birdhouses and work in the store. When the Children’s Museum’s Hot Wheels project was being phased out – all their structures were pre-fabricated – we took it off their hands so that it wouldn’t go to a landfill and could be reused. It’s a win-win situation when you can help veterans and do something green. “Chuck (Mack) has also been a big contributor. Moe & Johnny’s provides meals for veterans when they are working in the shop.” Piper’s other business partner has played a key role in his other non-profit endeavor. “Barb Vance is my benefactress. She lost her brother at a young age in Vietnam. She is a degreed social worker and certified fraud examiner who works in the private sector. We own 80 acres of land called ‘Popp Ridge’ in Perry County around the Indiana National Forest. Derby has only one open business with some nice tourist cabins. My space has accessibility and Rainbow Pay Lake sustains Rainbow Trout. A limestone quarry there is 376 feet deep and with a hill 370 feet tall. We are really close to the German Ridge camp. You can see the forest from the trees over there. It’s about midway between Evansville and Louisville on the Ohio River,” he described. Three veterans recently toured the shop, becoming acquainted with it. “If a guy goes through situational assessment, it takes about six weeks. We start with a simple assembly job where he works with different woodworking kits and starts building things. On Thursdays, we usually have a woodcarver, a sketch artist or somebody painting or building furniture. I leave them to their own devices to create things and put them on the website (www.veteransantiquities. com) for sale. They pack the items for sale and have them shipped. They mentor one another and learn to run the store or website. They can learn inventory control when they replenish materials and supplies. They continue telling the Veterans Antiquities story,” Piper said. Other veterans whose art appears in the store are Camille Richard (making beads and jewelry from glass, enamels and precious metals), Butch Perdue (creating family tree tables from recycled and claimed materials, shelves and wall hangings), Tim Hildebrandt (paintings and various artwork) and John Brooks (traditional oil paintings to large scale paintings and sculptures), just to name a few. As a mentor to his fellow veterans, Jeff Piper has answered a new calling by reaching out to those who have courageously served our country. You can discover and purchase the artistic fruits of their labor at Veterans Antiquities.

Spirit art? i could feel myself evolving artistically as the paintings emerged

as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

i was mystically blitzed by the realization that what had gone thru me was indeed as great as it seemed (unless the canvas was lying to me)

More GRAPE News about Wine and Health: I recently found this article and thought it was worth sharing. It talks more specifically about WHY wine in moderation is good for our health. Resveratrol has long been cited as the key component in red wine that benefits cardiovascular health by dozens of peer-reviewed scientific studies from around the world. But a new study conducted by Harvard Medical School and published in Science provides major breakthroughs in understanding how resveratrol works to keep cells healthy, which in turn is a big step toward developing effective drugs to treat diabetes, cancer, and other diseases. Senior study author David Sinclair, PhD, called it "the killer experiment" because it verified that resveratrol was the sole source of the benefits; identified the exact location of a protein (SIRT1) which helps fuel the power-producing parts of cells that fight age-related illnesses like cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes; and will allow the development of new treatments. In effect, resveratrol helps to slow aging. Resveratrol is a naturally occurring fungicide on the skins of grapes to help ward off plant disease, and is also the most potent naturally occurring chemical for combatting heart disease. It is found predominantly in red wine because of the prolonged skin contact in producing it, whereas white wines with virtually no skin contact contain very little. Years ago, former Cornell researcher Dr. Lee Creasy showed that red wines from humid winegrowing regions generally contain more resveratrol than those from dry regions because more resveratrol is needed to protect the grapes during the growing season. Indiana summers are most certainly HUMID which means it might be worth a visit to one of the 60 some Indiana wineries to get a heart healthy taste of the red wine grapes grown here including Chambourcin, Chancellor and even Concord. In the meantime here are two big, bold reds found in Indianapolis area wine shoppes that are brimming with flavor and resveratrol. Bon Sante! Tamarack Cellars Firehouse Red, Washington State–Lush, bold dry red wine with enticing aroma's of black cherry, plum and currants. Smooth creamy finish. Fire up the grill and enjoy a glass with a cut of lean beef. Fiddletown Cellars, Old Vines Zinfandel, California–WOW. In your face aromas and flavors of blackberry, mulberry, black pepper. Chewy tannins and long lingering finish. Another great glass for grilled beef or wild game.

i will choose to believe that the Spirit spoke and i painted it down C.W. Pruitt II Feb. 7, 2013

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

BRVA special public meeting regarding development of the old Shell station on College By Martin Chittum

martin@broadripplegazette.com On May 23, at 6pm, the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) held a special public meeting at the Broad Ripple United Methodist Church. The purpose was so representatives from Browning Investments could give information about their proposed development of the property at 6349 College Avenue – the site of a former Shell gas station. The meeting was very well attended with standing room only. Local TV media were also there covering it. The meeting was brought to order by BRVA President Jay Wetzel. He gave a general welcome and introduced the representatives who were to give the presentation. He made a point of saying that the BRVA does not yet have an official stance on the proposed development. The purpose of the meeting was to get the information needed so that they can form an opinion on it. After Jay was done, BRVA member Mark Wolf gave a general overview of the agenda for the evening. He stressed that all Broad Ripple residents who want to make their opinions heard should fill out the opinion poll, so the BRVA can better know how the neighborhood feels. Tom Healy gave a short overview of the development plans for the neighborhood in general, and how that may be relevant to the development being proposed. He spoke about the rich and interesting history of the canal, and the future vision they have for it. Much of the information regarding the BRVA's vision for development can be found in the Envision Broad Ripple plan that is available to view on the BRVA website (brva.org). The Envision plan was formally adopted by the city this past November and is the standard by which future neighborhood development will be judged. Elizabeth Marshall spoke shortly about the Midtown TIF that the neighborhood is involved with. She made a point of saying that, as of this moment, no TIF funds have been requested for this project. The main presentation was given by Joe Scimia of Faegre Baker Daniels. They are asking to have the site rezoned from C-2 to C-3 and for a variance in maximum allowed height and maximum allowed floor space for a retail store. The plan is to put in a Whole Foods grocery store, taking up 35,000 square feet in the ground floor, with apartments above, and a garage with 400 parking spaces on the north side. He said that they had previously proposed just an apartment building, but the city wasn't interested in putting any money toward just apartments. In addition, the land immediately underneath the former gas station is deemed unfit for residential construction – though it is considered safe for a retail grocery store. They also had proposed building a hotel on the site, but none of the major hotel franchisers were interested because of the location. He went through the nine vision statements outlined in the Envsion Broad Ripple plan, and described how the developers felt the proposed would fit in with it. He emphasized the proven track record of success in urban environments and strong interest in the neighborhood. But, as soon as he got to the point about providing a “service not currently available”, the audience erupted into a cacophony of boos and shouts. It turns out that many members of the community are rather sensitive about the possible opening of a Whole Foods in this neighborhood.

9 Jun 7 - Jun 20, 2013

After the shouting died down and the meeting was brought back to order, Greg Jacoby, of Browning, Day, Mullins, & Dierdorf, gave a presentation about the proposed structure itself. The storefront and parking will face College Avenue to the west and the apartments will be set back from College so that they won't be over the part of land where the gas station was. He said the developers were particularly sensitive to the appearance of the canal and plan to include some kind of public space near it that could potentially have use during local festivals. The general reaction from the audience to the artistic renderings seemed to be quite negative, and a tense, unsettled, atmosphere continued throughout his presentation. Past BRVA President, Jim Holland presided over a Q&A session after the main presentation. He started by asking that everyone keep it a low-key, rational, discussion. He also reiterated that the BRVA on-line survey is the place for opinions, so people should please keep to asking relevant questions. Few people heeded his wishes. He started the discussion in earnest with a question regarding the proposed 85-foot height of the building. The developers said that the reason for needing such a high allowance is to have room for the structures needed for the mechanical workings of the elevators and that the actual building wouldn't be that high. Many people voiced their displeasure with the potential increase in traffic on that area of College, with several relating anecdotes about having gotten into traffic accidents there. Others complained about the increased population density in what they already feel is a crowded part of the neighborhood. The developers feel the increased density is needed to fit with Broad Ripple's plan for self-sufficiency and to meet the wants of increased daytime business in the neighborhood. One asked if, in regards to the Midtown TIF, wouldn't it be better to locate the new grocery store in the area closer to 38th street, where there is already a recognized lack of services. The response to that was that it isn't a good neighborhood for a store like Whole Foods. They emphasized that the increased property value of putting the store in Broad Ripple would help the underdeveloped neighborhoods by adding funds to the TIF that could be used to their benefit in the future. They also suggested in this statement, that they would indeed ask for funds from the TIF for this development, seeing that it would come back to benefit the TIF. This subject reoccurred during some arguments amongst the audience members about TIFs in general and statements regarding recent allegations of corruption in the within the city government. In regards to any levee and flood issues, the developers recognize that until the levee system is completed, the property sits in the floodplain and are fully aware of what may happen. They feel that if any serious flooding were to occur, the only part that would be affected would be the grocery store, and that the apartments would be generally safe. Regarding the price of the housing, the developers plan for it to be priced at market rate for the neighborhood and don't plan on it being mixed income. They have no plans at this time for any sort of subsidized housing in it. While they don't plan on having any apartments developed specifically for seniors or the handicapped, they said the building will be fully accessible as required. When asked why the existing apartments in the area can't be renovated, they said that was the prerogative of the current landowner, and that he preferred to sell them and have something new built. This elicited random shouts of “slumlord!” from the audience. Several people asked why open a Whole Foods in Broad Ripple when there is already one located 2 miles away in Nora. The developers feel that, after much study, a Whole Foods would do well in the neighborhood and would be a good way to draw outside traffic into the neighborhood during the critical daytime hours that they are trying to promote. They also said that the store in Nora has just signed a 20-year lease, so they have absolutely no plans to close that one after opening the Broad Ripple store. They mentioned Lincoln Park and Evanston, Illinois as examples of areas that have several stores within a few miles of each other and have had no trouble with business. Others bemoaned the possibility of the store inevitably closing and being replaced by yet another sports bar. The developers countered this with the fact that as of this date, Whole Foods has never closed a store, to their knowledge. And, any future development of the site would first need to be approved by the authorities, and the neighborhood has already made it clear in their development plans that they don't wish to continue opening new bars. They were asked for a commitment to work with the BRVA regarding the appearance of the proposed development, and they agreed that they would. They stated they were sensitive to keeping with the shared vision of the neighborhood. Seeing no more useful discussion possible in light of the hostile atmosphere the meeting had devolved into, Jim Holland did his best to end it in an orderly manner. He once again stated that all opinions can be voiced in the BRVA survey. You can find all the detailed pertinent information regarding the proposal here: http://brva. org/initiatives/development-zoning/ On June 13, at 1pm, there will be a zoning meeting at the city building downtown for this proposed development. Everyone is invited to attend.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 6 in the left section of the middle row which contains 3-5-7-9. The 6 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space to the left of the 7. The 6 in the center section eliminates the spaces to the right of the 5. The 6 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces above and below the 7. The only place left is directly below the 3. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

BRVA Land Use committee May meeting By Alison Graham

PRESERVING OUR PAST FO R G E N E R AT I O N S TO C O M E

The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee met May 28 at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center to discuss the additional 35,000 square feet of retail space on College Avenue and the proposed tenant of Whole Foods. About 30 people were in attendance. The meeting consisted of a discussion of the possible recommendations and solutions to the problems of the retail space proposal. Board members discussed the precedent this building would set for future building proposals in the Village and future plans for the canal front. Many board members pointed out that a larger pedestrian activity would be desirable for this area in order to extend Broad Ripple further north. The BRVA envisions Broad Ripple with active streets and an engaged canal front and worry that the architecture and potentially blank, flat walls of the supermarket would take away from the desired atmosphere. Some members of the committee agreed that a smaller Whole Foods store, around 15,000-20,000 square feet, would be more reasonable for Broad Ripple and would open up the rest of the area to other commercial and residential tenants. The board plans to assemble a list of recommendations and present them at the next zoning meeting. The next meeting of the Land Use committee is scheduled for June 25 at 6 pm at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center located at 1550 Broad Ripple Avenue.

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor

Family, Cosmetic, Restorative & Implant Dentistry

Happy June, readers! People often ask me for helpful tips to make sure that they get in their weekly workouts. Of course I have about 100 but here are a few to get you going! Tip 1: Make an appointment with YOURSELF! Way too often we tend to put ourselves low on the totem pole when our schedules get busy and demanding. Try to find a time of day that you are able to squeeze in your workout without too much distraction. Whether it be early in the morning or right after work before going home, or even after dinner. For example, in my calendar book, I write down my name at a time each day that I plan to exercise so that I have time to take care of myself… and I make this appointment pretty hard to break. In taking care of yourself, you will be better to others as well! Tip 2: Find a few mantras that work for you. We all have days that we need to self-motivate more than others. On such days, I say “mantras” to myself that really push me into getting in the groove of the workout. Whether it be singing an empowering song in my head, thinking about a passed loved one, or simply just telling myself that “I AM STRONG!”, I find that these little tools help to get (and keep) me going. Tip 3: Break up the workout into segments If you break up the workout into time or activity segments, it can help you push through a long and/or challenging session. For example, if you plan to strength train for 60 minutes, try to approach it as 10 minutes of arms, 10 minutes of legs, and 10 minutes of core (abs and back); and do two rounds. Or for cardio, break up the session into one mile fragments instead of a full five mile trek. When I go out on my hour long runs, I tell myself “I am doing three 20-minute runs.” Sounds kind of silly but it REALLY works. This mental trick can make the workout go by more quickly give you endurance! Tip 4: Make your body your primary exercise “machine” Instead of using large machines that have fixed angles, use your own body to strength train. At So.Be.Fit. we like to call it “Training the body from the inside out”. Old fashioned squats, lunges, push-ups, wall sits and abdominal exercises are challenging, take up no space, challenge your core and balance, and, as an added bonus, are free since they require no equipment! So, when you are short on time and can’t make it to the gym you can still get in a great workout at home. Tip 5: Ditch the negative self talk Not surprisingly, studies have shown that those who regularly insult their physical appearance are much less likely to attain their health and fitness goals than those with a more positive self-image. Look at your body as a priceless asset and think about all of the wonderful things you can do because of it. Your body is your livelihood and should be praised more often than bashed. For example, instead of thinking how big your butt looks in those jeans, thank your butt for getting you around all day!

Finally, remember that a dog reflects the care and training an owner has given to it. Dogs are like children – they have to be taught how to behave, and they have to practice the social skills involved with dining out. See you out and about! Time to Dine with Your Dog We did it again — volunteered to be puppy raisers for Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). Our assistance dog in training, Seth III, is now nine months old and ready to dine with us on the patios of Broad Ripple. Although he has access to indoor restaurants with his service-dog-in-training identification, the outdoor summer experience is the most fun. If you haven’t met one of our previous 11 service dogs, I’ll catch you up. We have raised eight golden retrievers; two labs (one black, one yellow); and one lab/ golden mix. Our number 12, a golden retriever, got to be part of a recent fundraiser for CCI at Milano Inn. The festive event brought together a group of puppiesin-training, service dogs, and friends for an evening of good food, music, and a silent auction. Proceeds were donated to CCI. As volunteers, we tend to the puppy’s every need for 14-16 months: food, toys, grooming, training, and veterinary bills including neutering. We are then notified of a turn-in date at which time we return the dogs to CCI for continued training by professional trainers, first as a novice and then as an advanced service dog. If a dog makes the grade and matches with a person with a disability, it will go on to serve. The person may have any disability other than blindness, which requires a differently trained dog. So now that Seth will be out and about, it’s a good time to share thoughts about dining outdoors with dogs in Broad Ripple. Check out the business and restaurant sections in the Gazette. A paw print next to a restaurant’s name indicates a dogfriendly patio. Before setting out to dine out with your dog, always check that the patio welcomes dogs. I also encourage you to practice with your dog before you go to a local patio. Don’t ever leave a dog in a hot car if your plans have to change. Some suggestions when dining out with your dog: • Always keep the dog on a leash. • Keep hold of the leash or tie it to a table or chair leg. • If you have to leave the table, do not leave the dog alone; give the leash to another person at the table. • Tuck the dog under the table, and give it the down and stay commands. • If other dogs are present, service dogs ALWAYS have the right of way. • Don’t let your dog sniff other dogs, especially service dogs. If they make locked eye contact, escalation of attitudes can happen. (A dog fight can ruin everyone’s evening and threaten future access.) • Bring along a plastic bag and paper towels in case the dog has an accident. Clean up after it. • If your dog cannot maintain a long down/stay command (1 hour while you dine), don’t bring it with you. • Never feed a dog from a restaurant table. If you have scraps to give the dog, save them for the car or food bowl at home. • If you want to dine out with your dog, but it is not yet accomplished enough, enroll in a local obedience school. Tell the school your goal so trainers can help you and your dog become ready for this experience. • Caution: Young puppies are susceptible to disease and should not be exposed to lots of dogs until their vaccinations are complete.

Harold (Howie) Shipley, 27 year employee of the Robert E. Kennington American Legion Post #34, was seen filling the bird feeder for our resident new fledgling Sparrows....I asked "why are you doing that" to which he responded "Frog, the birds have to eat, they are God's creatures too." You are so right Howie. Post Commander, Tim Elson said "We are the post that cares". If you're ever by the post, stop and see Howie. P.S. He needs some more bird seed.
