Attendees of annual BRHS Reunion for classes of the 30s & 40s
The annual reunion for Broad Ripple High School classes of the 1930s and 1940s was held on June 2 at the Riviera Club. About 40 alumni and guests attended the brunch buffet. After the brunch, John D. Hague announced recent activities of the BRHS Alumni Association and the new website www.brhsalumni.org. This reunion is open to all 30s-40s alums and is held on the first Sunday each June. A relaxing and tranquil environment awaits customers at Complexions Spa, Salon & Boutique, located at 5420 North College Avenue. “We offer hair and nail services, massages, and we do facials. We’re really known for doing more corrective types of facials, including chemical peels, like microdermabrasion. We also do massage and body wraps,” explained owner Trinia Price. She is a licensed esthetician, massage therapist and makeup artist. After college, her career led to Los Angeles where she perfected her craft working with some well-known clientele. “I received a bachelor’s degree in Complexions fine arts from Roosevelt University. While in Chicago, I started singing 5420 North College Ave [OO23] with a professional band that was (317) 432-9000 really a professional act. Then I sang on a boat in Lake Michigan. www.complexionsspa.com When I started working at the cosmetics counters, I realized that I was interested in make up artistry. I started working with Chanel as a regional makeup artist. At the cosmetics counter, one isn’t allowed to tweeze the brows! You must have a license. I wanted to sculpt the brows, which inspired me to return to school to study esthetics and massage therapy. At the same time, I ended up returning to Indianapolis and studying at Honors Beauty College. After graduating, I worked at Techniques Day Spa in Indianapolis. I opened Complexions downtown, below Aesop’s Tables in 1999,” Trinia explained. “In 2003, I expanded my business by 3,000 square feet and acquired a small business administration loan. Nine years later, the building went into foreclosure. I am so happy I paid off my SBA loan in 2009!” she added. “I proceeded to make my rent payments to the bank for three years waiting for the possible opportunity to buy my space. At the bank sale, it was listed for three times the market value due to back taxes that were owed. I decided to look for a new place. What drew me here (to 5420 North College Avenue) was The Fresh Market. Complexions Spa also believes in using many organic products. I recently moved back to Indianapolis and worked at the Mass Ave location before we moved to Broad Ripple,” she mentioned. “I do men and women’s hair, colors, cuts, nails, manicures, pedicures and schedule appointments, helping our guests with whatever they need here. I like getting to know our guests and interacting with them. I love the area we’re in. Creativity! It’s fulfilling, making people feel good about themselves. We have a great group of talented people on our team,” Angie noted. Trinia made some transitions with Complexions’ new location. “I didn’t want to compete with the hi-tech design of my other place and my philosophy was that the business had to stand alone. I just pulled out more things that I had that I wasn’t able to use before. I decorated this place with antiques, paintings and tapestries that my family had. It is what it is. The main thing is that we’re all tight knit here. We know each other,” she noted. “I’ve had to build out the store space here. We’ve done the build-out ourselves with family and friends. Customers are coming back and we’re starting to see a lot of new faces. Here, the people want more of a foundational place that fits. It’s more of a neighborhood feel being across from the Fresh Market. My husband, Adam Price, was very instrumental in the build-out with my brother, Mike Rife, an electrician and other friends who were on the crew,” she said. You can often find photographer Faith Cohen’s wonderful work hanging at Zest! Exciting Food Creations, but I’m here to tell you about Faith’s Global Beatles Day. In Faith’s words, “Global Beatles Day is a day honoring and celebrating the phenomenon and ideals of the Beatles, collectively and individually, for their gifts to the world including, but not limited to, their promotion of peace and love, of truth and youth, and of the expansion of human consciousness. More specifically, GBD commemorates the Beatles music - their promotion and expansion of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, world music... and especially their collective and personal exploration of a myriad of musical ideas and innovations.” Faith chose June 25 as the day to celebrate the Beatles because on June 25, 1967 their song “All You Need Is Love” was first performed by the Beatles on the BBC program, Our World. It was the first live global television link and broadcast to twenty-six countries and watched by 400 million people. I’m a big fan of Faith and her dream of holiday celebrating the Beatles. Let’s all do our part on Tuesday, June 25 and honor the band’s lasting influence. Play a Beatles record or queue one of their songs on your iPod, brush your hair over your forehead, scream like a teenage girl, or whatever makes you think of them.

Well-known Chicago band, ROLLOVER will be in our neighborhood. The Indy Hostel is celebrating their tenth year with a series of concerts (mark your calendar for August 10, the Indy Hostel Folk Fest). ROLLOVER was the first band from Chicago ever to be signed by the legendary Bill Graham Management (Santana, Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Neville Brothers, Joe Satriani). They are a band with a classic roots-rock sound influenced by late 60's and 70's rock. ROLLOVER has toured with some of rock's biggest acts, including The Allman Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Blues Traveler, John Hiatt, The Neville Brothers, Cheap Trick, Buddy Guy, Eddie Money, Robin Trower, Johnny Winter and many others. For the last 18 years Louie Zagoras (main singer-songwriter) has been writing songs with Roy Marinell. Roy co-wrote “Werewolves of London,” “Excitable Boy,” and other hits with the late Warren Zevon. Roy most recently co-wrote Kid Rock's hit song "All summer long" – the song which caused me to have an inexplicable crush on Kid Rock a few summers ago. Anyway, this promises to be a great show with a fantastic band.

As you might know I usually go to Austin for the Austin City Limits Festival in the fall, but this year I’m skipping it for a festival in our own backyard. I know this event is months away, but you should get your tickets now. The White River Arts & Musical Festival (WARMfest ) will run for three days over Labor Day weekend. WARMfest is a collaboration of several key groups: Indy Parks & Recreation, Indie Arts & Vintage Marketplace and Broad Ripple Music Fest. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The "In Between the Seasons" Wine: Rose Pink wine is divine. But like a lot of other innovative wine ideas (the screw cap, the bag in box) pink wine has taken a bad rap for years. Most people think all pink wine is SWEET and cheap. Not true. In fact some of the most coveted and expensive wine in the world is pink. ( Think: elegant lush Bandol rose wines from Provence, France. Ooo la la!) So how did pink wine get a scarlet reputation? In the 70's the California wine industry was just beginning to grow as was a red grape called Zinfandel. Zinfandel thrived in the wine country soil and was made into a bold, dry red wine. However, the 70's wine drinking public wanted WHITE wine. So what could a California winemaker do with this fruity, spicy red grape to make it more palatable and profitable? The Gallo Brothers put it in a jug renamed it "Hearty Burgundy" and made a fortune. But the thirst for white wine was yet to be quenched. So at Sutter Home Winery, Winemaker Bob Trinchero turned a mistake into a milestone. He had a barrel of Zinfandel that experienced stuck fermentation which means the yeast died off before turning all of the sugar in the juice into alcohol. This left Bob with a batch of pink, sweet wine. What could have been a brush with disaster became the blush of success. Pink was closer to white than red and America's natural proclivity to all things sweet made this combination a winner which we all now know as "White Zinfandel". The French had been making rose style wines for years with great success. But the crafty Americans decided to call it "blush" which to this day can still be a tip off when the label on a bottle of pink wine says "blush" more often than not it will lean to the sweeter style. Wine labeled "rose" usually means the pink wine inside is a bit more dry. After all it is a STYLE of wine making and most winemakers take one of two options when creating a barrel of pink wine: the rose/blush method (like Trinchero) or the French style of rose wine making called "saignee" (SAHNYEE). Blush/Rose style means the winemaker puts the crushed red grapes with skins and juice in a barrel, adds yeast that eats away the sugar in the juice upping the alcohol and lowering the sweetness. The winemaker decides how far to let that fermentation go and thus creates either a dry or sweet style of rose/blush wine. The Saignee process has the winemaker putting full clusters of grapes into a barrel. No crushing. Just grapes. Yeast is added which starts the fermentation and the whole grapes naturally release juice. Sometimes this juice is also called "Free Run". Winemakers consider this to be the best or freshest juice of the batch which makes it perfect for rose wine. The winemaker wants the color and flavor of the red wine but not the bitterness or astringency which comes from longer contact of juice/grape skins. Rose wines are wonderful with food. The acid and fruit from the young fresh juice enhances virtually any protein especially seafood, fish, chicken and turkey. You serve a rose wine chilled but as it comes to room temp the delicious quality remains. Think about this. On a hot summer day when you know your meal would be complemented with a big red wine like a malbec or shiraz, but the thought of drinking a bottle seems so heavy and hot... try a rose style of malbec or syrah instead. You get all of the "aaah" and none of the "ugh". And most roses look like rubies in the glass which makes the food/wine experience even more delightful. Real men drink pink wine. and sometimes they even have a second glass! Shell Site Overview By Thomas P. Healy
At the request of the Broad Ripple Gazette, I elaborate here on my presentation at the May 23 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA). My task that night was to share aspects of the Envision Broad Ripple (EBR) Plan and the Canal Esplanade project relevant to the proposed development of the former Shell site. My presentation and this article are for informational purposes only; neither constitutes official policy of the BRVA nor articulates my personal views. -------Adopted by the Metropolitan Development Commission last November, the EBR Plan is one section of the City’s Comprehensive Plan. As the plan of record for the Village its purpose is to guide property owners, developers and decision-making bodies in their considerations and deliberations. The guidelines of the Plan were crafted after a 4.5-year planning process that involved more than 200 people at 27 public meetings and two supplemental field trips by the volunteer steering committee. Professional planning staff from the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development provided support and guidance. Early on, planners challenged participants to catalog community assets and to identify specific characteristics of the Village that defined its “look and feel.” Broad Ripple Park, White River, the Monon Trail and Central Canal were key assets. Tree-lined bike and pedestrian-friendly streets and locally owned shops were also cited. The Plan’s recommendations were grouped into the following nine major elements: 1. Improve transportation and infrastructure 2. Foster and improve sustainability 3. Improve the image of the Village 4. Honor the historic aspects of Broad Ripple 5. Increase trees and open space
6. Respect White River, Central Canal, & Monon Trail 7. Maintain the mixed-income diversity and provide housing opportunities for all age groups 8. Seek ways to develop key projects 9. Increase density
Further, participants crafted land-use recommendations that include unique typologies and identified six critical areas that exhibit unusual character deserving special consideration. The proposed project lies within Critical Area 2, as described in the Plan: “To retain and enhance the village character of Broad Ripple and to promote its evolution into a self-sustaining pedestrianoriented village it is critical to increase the population density, promote mixed-use development and enhance vitality of the streetscape.” Element #6 is also pertinent: “Capitalize upon the resource and opportunities provided by the Central Canal and the towpath.” The City’s Comprehensive Plan zoning recommendation for this site is Village Mixed-Use with two components: 1. Community Commercial Uses: “This land use category is for low-intensity retail commercial and office uses, which serve a predominantly residential market adjacent to, or very near, the location of the use. The uses in this land-use category are designed to fulfill a broad range of retail, personal, professional and business services and are either freestanding or part of a small integrated center typically anchored by a grocery store. These centers contain no, or extremely limited, outdoor display of merchandise.” 2. Residential Development greater than 15.00 units per acre. “This density is appropriate only within relatively intense urban areas where there is a full range of urban services and where those services have the capacity to accommodate the development. It may be appropriate in rare circumstances in suburban areas as assisted-living housing and as a buffer between major retail commercial uses and lower density residential uses. Development at this density is appropriate for all types of mass transit corridors.” The site also lies within a new category proposed by the Envision Broad Ripple Plan: Neighborhood Village. This is a mixed-use designation that seeks to foster a bicycle- and pedestrian-friendly area and increase residential density by combining both commercial and residential uses in structures. The Plan lists eight Frontage Typologies that honor unique characteristics of Village streets. For example, Broad Ripple Avenue has a different form than Cornell, which differs from College Avenue, which has yet another form than Westfield Boulevard north of the Canal and so on. The three typologies (or forms) for this site include: North Village Local on the Carrollton side of the proposed project. This calls for tree-lined streets and a less hectic pace. College Avenue is designed for a potential transit corridor and major access road. Canal typology encourages embracing and enhancing the Canal. Frontage typologies identify setbacks, height and appropriate uses. Retail and residential uses are allowed on all three typologies. The College Avenue typology allows for a height of 50 feet or five stories (whichever is less), while the North Village and Canal typologies permit four stories or 40 feet (whichever is less). Existing zoning limits the height to 35 feet. The developer, Browning Investments, is requesting a variance to increase the height to 85 feet at the Shell site. Typologies also outline access, façades and parking requirements. Primary entrance must be on the College side and access from the North Village side is required. An entrance off the Canal is permitted but not required. Ground-level transparency is the amount of door/window space that
allows pedestrians to see inside a structure and breaks up the face of a building. On the College Avenue side the minimum transparency at ground level is 40 percent, while the other 2 typologies have a minimum of 25 percent. On-site parking is required in the College and North Village typologies. It is only permitted behind a building on the Canal. No driveways are permitted off the Canal but are allowed for in the other two typologies. Browning Investments is also seeking a variance of development standards to increase the maximum amount of space for a retailer from 8,000 square feet to 35,000 square feet. While the amount of square footage for a given structure is not directly addressed in the Envision Broad Ripple Plan, the City’s Comprehensive Plan allows for a maximum gross floor area of 125,000 square feet. Since 1987 the Village has sought to make the Canal more inviting by adding landscaping and pedestrian amenities. At various times through the past 30 years, the BRVA has worked with faculty and students from Purdue and Ball State universities to design upgrades. Professional firms have also been contracted to provide landscape designs, some of which were implemented in 2000 with the installation of the Central Canal Towpath. During the Envision Broad Ripple process, historic plans for the Canal came under intense scrutiny. Through the generosity of Village supporters who donated to the BRVA’s fund-raising arm, the Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress, the architecture firm Browning, Day, Mullins and Dierdorf (BDMD) was hired to collect designs into a master plan for transforming the Canal between Westfield Boulevard and College Avenue into a linear park. These drawings assisted in formulating key elements of the EBR Plan. Since BDMD is part of Browning Investments’ development team on the Shell site, Browning has incorporated Canal Esplanade plans in the renderings shown to the public. To date, Browning has committed to implementing Canal Esplanade elements on its project only from College to Carrollton on the north bank. It remains to be seen whether this incremental improvement could be leveraged to include the entire Esplanade project. Citizens Energy Group, owner of the Canal, is a key stakeholder in this discussion; in addition to the relevant zoning approvals, the developer will have to obtain the utility’s support before the project can proceed. Based on information gathered from the public meeting and from a SurveyMonkey survey that ended June 5, the BRVA encouraged Browning to seek a continuance from the June 13 hearing, which it did. As all parties prepare for the July 11 hearing, the BRVA continues to work with the development team to address community concerns. The following list was given to Browning for consideration as it revises plans for the site. 1. Create a more residential feel overall — especially along Carrollton and Canal sides. No parking garage, loading zone or dumpsters exposed. 2. Enhance existing transit stop on College Avenue to integrate with IndyConnect Red Line plan. 3. Reduce height. Overall height can be 65 feet with the understanding that the elevator shaft and stairwell can overrun by 1 story. Need a 4-story “feel” by making sure the 5th story is set back. 4. Second story needed on College Avenue side to comply with the EBR Plan. 5. Project needs to improve how it interacts with the Canal — especially transparency as outlined in EBR Plan. Need to coordinate and collaborate with Citizens Water and its design work for this part of the Canal, especially any upcoming public meetings. 6. More residential units. 7. More traditional scale and style of building (base-middle-top); not so contemporary looking. 8. OK with reduced parking. 9. Reduce square footage of single tenant to a maximum of 20,000 square feet. 10. Specify green/sustainable features. NOTE: The U.S. Green Building Council reports that buildings account for 41% of total energy use, 73% of electricity consumption and 38% of greenhouse gas emissions. Thomas P. BROAD RIPPLE DAM PROJECT COMPLETION DELAYED–The completion date for the Broad Ripple Dam project has been moved to late August/early September instead of June. According to Citizens Water, the delay is due in part to the rain we had in April which slowed down progress significantly. MERIDIAN BRIDGE PROJECT COMPLETION PUSHED TO FALL– Will Meridian Street ever go back to 4 lanes near Holliday Park? Maybe this fall according to the Indianapolis Department of Public Works. The Meridian Bridge over the White River (where Meridian goes down to 2 lanes) is part of a bridge maintenance project that began in 2011. The bridge was built in 1926 and is the only 7-span arch bridge in Indianapolis. In addition to delays for the complex concrete work, working near a levee under one of the bridge spans required additional time for design and construction. I can’t wait for Meridian to re-open and also the trails underneath it to link us again to Holliday Park. LEVEE COMING TO THE NORTH SIDE–The City of Indianapolis is working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct a levee on the city’s north side. Right now they are completing Levee IIIB which is an earthen levee that will extend the levee from Kessler to the north edge of the Riviera Club. Summer is here. School is out for most and teachers are recharging their batteries. If you are a teacher or know a teacher, the pet industry is again reaching out to you. Last July I wrote about “Pets in the Classroom”. It is an ongoing grant program but now is the time to think about next semester and here’s why: Times are changing. We live in a digital age. It has not gone unnoticed by the pet industry. One company spokesperson said “In a world where video games, iPods and other electronics reign supreme we unfortunately see less and less children having an interest in pets.” The industry is concerned that if today’s 5- and 10-yearolds fail to develop the connection with animals and the desire to own one, the industry will face an impoverished market and a dwindling customer base that cannot support the abundance of small, independent retailers. The most vulnerable will be those that specialize in small animals, reptiles, birds and fish–basically any category other than cats and dogs. I know at our house, our kids had it all…. hamsters, guinea pigs, fish, lizards and rabbits. I grew up with a rabbit and gold fish. How many of you had Habitrails for your hamsters? How many of your kids today are asking for that for their birthdays? Studies show that kids turn to their pets for emotional well-being, with 40% of children choosing pet companionship when feeling down. Kids were also found to seek out their pets when feeling tired, upset, scared or lonely, and 53% of respondents said they enjoy doing homework with pets nearby. “Being around animals is extremely good for children,” says Dr. Harvey Markovitch, pediatrician and editor of The Archives of Disease in Childhood. “They’re good for morale, and teach children about relationships and about the needs of another living being – learning to care for a pet helps them to learn how to care for people.” Studies show caring for pets aids in improving school attendance and teaches children about responsibility. Armed with those statistics, the pet industry, knowing that teachers have limited resources, initiated “Pets in the Classroom”. This is a program that has helped teachers support classroom pets with no-hassle educational grants for the purchase of new pets, pet environments, pet food and supplies for existing classroom pets. Since 2010 over 9,300 grants have been awarded. If you are a teacher who would like to use pets for education go to www.petsintheclassroom.org . Taken from that website they state “whether it’s Math (“how much does a hamster weigh?”) or Science (“what does a snake eat?”), Geography (“what part of the world do ferrets come from?”) or Grammar (“what words would we use to describe a goldfish?”) students will approach learning all these subjects with a new enthusiasm and interest. Other classes can even come visit your classroom pets and your students can create special presentations about the animals. The following conditions apply: Pets in the Classroom grants are offered to Pre-Kindergarten through Eighth grade classes only in both public and private schools. These grants are intended to support pets or aquariums in the classroom for the purposes of teaching children to bond with and care for their pets responsibly. The welfare of the small animals involved is of paramount importance. These grants must not be used for the purposes of research or experiments of any kind. The Indianapolis Star reported on June 8th: “The Teacher of the Year’s classroom is a zoo. Hens cluck outside, crayfish swim in water and a tadpole has turned into a frog. Ann Mennonno’s first- and second-graders cradle crayfish and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. They care for a bearded dragon named Cinderella. In this classroom, learning comes to life. “It’s more than reading about it,” said Mennonno, who was chosen as Indianapolis Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year. “It’s seeing it, feeling it and being responsible for it — and that’s when you don’t forget.” A 13-year educator at IPS, Mennonno takes the district’s top teaching title for the second time. She was recognized as IPS Teacher of the Year in 2004. Praised for her innovative teaching style, Mennonno integrates reading, writing and math in her social studies and science lessons in her multi-age classroom for Grades 1 and 2 at the Center for Inquiry at IPS 27 on the Near-Northside. For a unit on life cycles, which led to the classroom zoo, she took her class to the real zoo to pick animals to write about in nonfiction books.” What kid wouldn’t love a bearded dragon named Cinderella? Retain your Gains! A common scenario for those who work in the fitness arena: Someone starts out quite dedicated to their regimen for a period of time (say a future bride for example), and POOF after the wedding she never returns as if the only reason to get into shape was for her sacred wedding photos. This is an all too common occurrence and understandable due to family schedules, vacations, illness, work, etc. Many people choose against even starting since there is a good chance that at some point they will undo their hard earned fitness. It seems that fitness is like a dog chasing its own tail as there is no true “end” if one wants to reap the benefits. However, this grim idea is not necessarily the case. In fact, researchers have consistently found that it takes less work to maintain your level of fitness than it did to get there in the first place. So, when life throws you curveballs and you can’t get in your usual level of activity, you can temporarily scale back on your regimen without becoming a slug. However, don’t celebrate by kicking up your heels and popping bon bons. Researchers have also found that after two to three weeks of reduced activity, subjects showed a reduced insulin sensitivity and decreased ability to burn fat. So, good news and bad news I suppose. The various literature on “detraining” is rather complex because different adaptations to your muscles, heart and metabolism fade away at different rates. But a good general rule is that you retain endurance gains for about two weeks without training but after four weeks, you are near or at baseline. Quite obviously, the drop off happens sooner if you’ve just started exercising while long term jocks have structural adaptations that will endure for several months such as a stronger heart and more muscle capillaries. There are some good strategies however to “cheat” your way to preserving your fitness when you are time crunched. Many studies have shown that you can get away with working out fewer times per week and for a shorter period of time….as long as you maintain or increase the intensity. For example, one study showed that subjects who were used to training six times per week were able to maintain fitness with only two high intensity workouts a week. So if you have only 10 or 20 minutes, you can squeeze in a great and high intense workout (think burpees, pushups, squats, lunges) all in your family room! Take away message, it’s much easier to maintain endurance and strength than to rebuild it from scratch, so find the time for at least a few short workouts even when you’re busy!

Here Comes the Bride — in Broad Ripple Broad Ripple is a great location for weddings and wedding parties. With June as the traditional month for wedding bells, you might see celebrations happening here these days. The bachelor and bachelorette parties are easy to spot. As nightlife gets in full swing with a limo in sight, the tip-off might be a bevy of young women with one sporting a tiara, boa, or sash that designates her as the bride. She is usually the “queen bee” with all the other women buzzing around her. Hopping from bar to bar, celebrating the days preceding the grand wedding finale, these merry groups stand out with their laughter and chatter. Their camaraderie underscores joy of the event to come. With the bride leading the way, dinner orders usually consist of lots of cosmos drinks and chicken dishes. No groom in sight! Groups of guys out on the town are usually the sign of a bachelor party in progress. Revelry runs high as these outings celebrate the groom’s last few days or hours of freedom. The groom is usually in the center of his group, being indulged with his favorite brew or cocktail and ribs, steak, or thick hamburger. Rehearsal dinners, weddings, and receptions abound in the Village and surrounding restaurants. Hollyhock Hill has been a tradition for family rehearsal dinners. I have attended several at this venerable, old-line restaurant. Bigger receptions frequently get booked at the Riveria Club or Riverwalk on Westfield. I have attended weddings at the Indianapolis Art League and would not be surprised by a funky wedding at the Vogue. Although area churches are most likely to host weddings, I am sure there have been couples united in wedlock on the Monon Trail, at Broad Ripple Park, along the Canal, or at the Museum of Art. Choosing the special site for a wedding or reception might be just as important as the decision to marry. Maybe a favorite date spot or sentimental spot where the couple met becomes the wedding destination as it did for the pair who wed this year at Plump’s Last Shot Wedding related festivities are easily accommodated in Broad Ripple. There seems to be a decided trend toward choosing more casual places for rehearsal dinners. BR is loaded with options. Cruising the Farmer’s Market might help you find unique vendors to complement rehearsals or receptions. Ice cream carts and wonderful breads, crepes, and pies may be sourced. If you want a delicious BBQ, you can find the right vendors for a DIY affair. Perhaps a cupcake cake or pink whoopie pies from local bakeries can put a special spark in your event. Local breweries can help with a craft beer reception. Don’t forget the pets or kiddos. Some weddings are including dogs as part of the wedding party. I have seen them carry a pillow bearing rings all the way to the altar. If you do include four-legged friends, stop by the Three Dog Bakery for the day’s special treat. I also have heard of couples who are inviting lots of young families to enjoy weddings with a children’s area featuring small tables and chairs where children can color and craft supervised by a sitter. Area parks offer shelters and perfect landscapes for vows: Broad Ripple Park, Opti Park, Marrott Park, and Holliday Park. A ceremony by the Canal or the River would be sublime on a cool June day. What about having four or five food trucks pulling up for an impromptu reception? Surprise and fun! Instead of a traditional guestbook, have guests sign a tablecloth with permanent markers. Any one of the wonderful local florist can design lovely flowers: Colby Palmer, McNamara, Posh Petals, Bokay. Got the idea? If you want to have wedding events, big or small, Broad Ripple can be the best of all locations.

DPW presents Cornell plan Jason Cook, an engineer with the Department of Public Works, hosted a public meeting at Broad Ripple Park on June 5. The plans for Cornell include fixing the drainage problems, widening and striping the street, rebuilding the existing sidewalks and driveway curb cuts, adding new sidewalks, and changing the parking configurations. It had been previously rumored that Cornell would become one-way. This is not scheduled to occur. Instead, the street will be widened allowing the on-street parking to move closer to the Monon Trail. Two lanes will then be striped. The widths of the lanes will be narrow, about the width of Meridian lanes in the 56th Street area. Some of the parking will be reverse angle parking. This means a car will drive past the spot and back into it on the diagonal. This puts the trunk on the Monon side for safer unloading of bikes. The project is expected to begin in late July and finish in November. It will be performed in stages, so as not to block all of the businesses along Cornell at the same time.
