Connect Think - Village app designers By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Connect Think specializes in developing solutions for web, mobile and desktop platforms. Justin Bolles, Chris Waugh and Chris Swinefurth are partners in the Broad Ripple-based company located at 6507 Carrollton Avenue. They recently shared their entrepreneurial story in a round table discussion. “Chris (Waugh) and I originally met in Westlane Middle School and then went to North Central High School and Purdue University. Chris (Swinefurth) was my first boss out of college. The three of us worked together for about three years. We actually worked at home for about a year before we got the office space in Nora,” Connect Think Bolles said. “One of the reasons we got together was to play with the iphone. We 6507 Carrollton Ave [C4] started this company to get together and work (317) 682-0242 with apps. When we were working for other companies, we decided to see if we could do connectthink.com this for ourselves. We’ve had a 100 percent retention rate of our clients with IndyGo being our newest client this year. Growing the staff has helped us grow and take on more projects,” Waugh mentioned. “For example, we’re creating a mobile commerce website, e-brochures and Word Press websites. Our client interfacing and marketing has found great success with a team dedicated to it,” Swinefurth noted. “When designing apps, there is a phone component and a web component that helps drive home the experience of using the web. It really depends on the solution that the client is asking for,” Waugh explained. “That’s really the interesting part of our job. We have apps that range from brewer's beers on tap from Flat 12 Brewery to helping a 600 person sales force access a catalog,” said Bolles. ”The apps are automated to make your device do something for you and to make your life easier,” Waugh added. Laurie Blackburn is Connect Think’s Director of Marketing. “My background is in marketing and advertising. I began with an ad agency in New York City, which is where I’m from. After years of managing branding and advertising for larger clients like Community Health Network, Marsh and The Indiana Blood Center, I decided I wanted to use my writing and marketing skills to consult for companies who needed to grow their business,” she explained. “My friend, Linda Brundage, co-owner of Nogginwerks (a local ad agency in Broad Ripple that handles a lot of brand and advertising work for Simon Property Group) told me about Connect Think. They had been working with Simon, developing the Atlas app and wanted to add someone with marketing and account management experience. I was impressed by these guys because they are so good at programming and yet completely able to talk through technology with a marketing person like

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle The committee and a few resident observers at the monthly meeting.

The Vogue Theater opened 75 years ago on June 18 and has gone though a few incarnations since 1938. The Vogue played hundreds of movies – some wholesome, some not so wholesome for the first 39 years. For the last 36 the Vogue has been home to live music and I’ve been seeing shows there for 31 of those years. My all-time favorite Vogue concert memory is of one of the first shows that I saw there: The Ramones on May 24, 1983. Joey Ramone and I share a May 19th birthday. I’d just turned 22 and Joey had turned 32. I made a Happy Birthday Joey sign and I swear I saw him wink at me under his delightful mop of hair. Other favorite new-wave punk shows include the Stray Cats, Plasmatics, Wendy O Williams, Joan Jett, Psychedelic Furs, and They Might Be Giants. I discovered my love of twang by seeing BR5-49 followed by Junior Brown just a week later in 1997. Ralph Stanley and Willie Nelson always put on amazing shows. The Vogue has been great about showcasing local talent. Otis Gibbs worked at the Vogue (and its sister club, the Patio) as a doorman and in recent years his name has been on the marquee as a solo act. I even got to play there with Alice Chalmers And The Stick A Cork In Your Jug Band a couple of years ago. I think I might go down in Vogue history as the only typewriter player to grace the stage. I also love being in the Vogue during the day. My friend Jennifer used to do the chalk calendar that was in the men’s room in the late 1980s and it was fun to tag along while she worked. Did you know that you can buy tickets to Vogue shows during business hours? The office is open from noon – 5:30 Monday through Friday. The office is upstairs in what used to be the projection room. The Vogue continues to host excellent live music. I’ll see you there soon. Vogue Theater 6259 N College Ave

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. June mtg of BRVA land use and development By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The Broad Ripple Village Association Land Use and Development Committee met for the regular meeting on June 25. The meeting was at the family center at Broad Ripple Park. There was a fairly small public turnout. About 25 were in attendance, including the committee and the petitioners. There were two items on the agenda. Committee chair Jim Holland called the meeting to order. He announced that item 2 on the agenda, commonly referred to as "the Shell project", has changed its request from a C-3C classification to a C-S classification and has moved the hearing date at the City-County Building from July 11 to July 25. 1) 6516 Ferguson Street: petition 2013-UV2-011. This request is to open a commercial cafe in the garage at the rear of the property. The front of the property contains Playful Soul and Mother Nature's Sun [C4 on map]. Plans call for a small amount of seating, for 8 to 12 people, with most of the food being served in to-go containers. The request includes a zoning variance to legally establish the massage therapy business that has been at the location for some time. It also calls for two outdoor freezers to be installed by the garage, outdoor seating, and a yard sign. They hope to open in the fall. Tom Healy discussed how this project fits in with the recommendations for development in the north Village district. The committee voted to support this petition. The hearing in the City-County Building is scheduled for July 9. 2) 6349 College Ave, 702, 705, 709 & 713 E. 63rd Place, and 710 E. Laverock Road: petitions 2013-ZON-013 & 2013-VAR-001. Jim Holland explained that a sub-committee of the land use committee, consisting of two professional architects and Tom Healy, has been negotiating with the developers. Those negotiations are continuing and the site plan is evolving. A traffic study is underway on College to determine if a new traffic signal is needed. The Whole Foods portion of the project has been reduced to be under 35,000 square feet. The number of apartment units in the four floors above the grocery has been increased to around 100. The parking as required by the city is 368 space, but the project has reduced it to 326 to make space for the additional residential units. The committee voted to move the voting on this project to a special meeting (likely mid-July) to be announced.

myself,” she added. “The original idea for Connect Think came about through three friends who were all working independently in IT. Chris Swinefurth had 15 years of experience designing and implementing enterprise solutions. Chris Waugh had been a technology consultant and worked in large corporate IT departments; while Justin Bolles was writing embedded code for custom hardware. Independently, they provided a number of services, but together they could deliver a wider range of solutions, from system integration and development of databases to website applications. For a while they worked remotely, but then decided an office space would allow them to collaborate more easily and bring on new people. One of the strongest benefits of the Connect Think team is that everyone brings particular strengths in programming and IT. As for our location, Broad Ripple is thriving and we think it’s the perfect place to grow a technology business. This is our second office in three years. Our first was in Nora. We now have 2,400 square feet of completely renovated space and we seem to be filling it pretty fast. Plus, we’re right down the street from the Broad Ripple Brewpub,” she said. Connect Think’s clients are as diverse as the apps they design for them. “We work with a wide range of companies, from large Fortune 500's like Simon Property Group, to smaller start-ups. Some of our projects include FatStax for iPad, a cloudbased solution that integrates electronic catalogs into the iPad for sales teams. We built and maintain a large-scale custom integration solution for Central Restaurant Products. Another client, Art to Remember, needed a large-scale ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) solution for their business. There are simple, elegant apps like the Drumstick Dash for Wheeler Mission, the Wheeler Mission website and a mobile website for Central Restaurant Products. Most recently, we were hired by IndyGO. We also partner with companies like The Basement, Raidious and Hirons to provide specific technology solutions for their clients,” she added. Bolles described one of their apps: “We did an app for the Drumstick Dash to provide participants (runners and walkers) information on the day of the event, like the layout of the course, water station locations, how volunteers could help and the ability to donate to the event for Wheelers Rescue Mission. There were 15,000 participants last year.” Waugh added, “It’s having information in your pocket.” Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs would be proud of them. “We always work in groups of at least two developers on a project and have a lot of direction between the client and developer so it won’t get lost in translation,” Swinefurth noted. Waugh added, “It’s great having a business like ours in Broad Ripple. It’s still a very attractive place for business to attract customers and it was a very big step for us to move here back in March. We’re thrilled to be in the neighborhood. One of our partners is Nogginwerks that used to be located here in this building.” They recently attended the Apple World Wide Developer Conference in San Francisco and are already applying information learned there. Bolles said, “We’ve already had a meeting this morning (in mid-June), where we were talking with a client about some of the new features that were discussed at the conference. We met developers from all across the U.S. and around the world from Brazil, Belgium, Hong Kong and Japan. There were 66 countries represented.” Waugh added, “There were a lot of new fun tools and toys and OS X 10.9 Mavericks, the new Macintosh operating system.” Swinefurth noted, “There are new features that will benefit our clients in a huge way.” A popular Macintosh website, 9to5mac.com, has daily breaking information. The Indiana Economic Development Commission recently offered Connect Think up to $370,000 in conditional tax credits and up to $25,000 in training grants. The plan is to create up to 25 new jobs by 2016. A portfolio of Connect Think's work can be seen at: connectthink.com/portfolio. Use @connectthink to follow them on Twitter. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Lava Lips & Tiki Trends Grand Opening Set for July 20th

Are you looking for a hot time in Indy this summer? Then be sure to check out Lava Lips, Indy’s first and only hot and spicy tasting bar at 4915 N. College Ave. just south of the Broad Ripple area. On Saturday, July 20th, Lava Lips will be having a special Grand Opening Celebration featuring free hot sauce and salsa samplings, free food tastings provided by Yats, beer from the Upland brewing company, food trucks, grand opening discounts, family fun and more. The public is invited and it promises to be a “hot” time for all. Hot sauce is a hot market, and production of specialty and hot sauces rank among the top 10 growing industries in the U.S. Owners Lisa and Michael Siemer feel they have tapped into a growing trend. According to Lisa Siemer, “People want more flavor and excitement in their food today, but they also want a broad selection, advice, a fun place to shop, and the option to ‘try before they buy,’ and that is where we come in.” In fact, every sauce that is available for sale in the shop, from lighter varieties, salsas and bbq sauces, to their hottest sauces, with names like “Penance” and “Widow Maker” are available to try. Lava Lips also houses Tiki Trends, a tropical décor business run by Michael Siemer. According to Siemer, “This place is the ideal location, right near Greg Hardesty’s Room Four Restaurant and The Sinking Ship Bar, and it combines our love for hot and flavorful sauces in an environment that makes you think you are in Key West.” Lava Lips and Tiki Trends are open from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday; 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday; and closed Monday. Visit them online at: www.lavalipsindy.com or www.tikitrends.com.

Butler Student-Led Pharmacy Receives National Award

The Butler University Community Outreach Pharmacy (BUCOP) is one of four studentled community programs to receive a national award for community service from the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). Faculty advisor Kristal Williams and student Meagan Doolin will accept the award and $15,000 in prize stipends at the ACCP’s national conference in July. BUCOP and the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences (COPHS) will use the stipends for community public health projects. Since it started in 2009, BUCOP has filled thousands of prescriptions and provided medication counseling free to low-income patients during Saturday clinics held at Neighborhood Fellowship Church on Indianapolis’ near eastside. Butler volunteers—COPHS students and faculty—work side-by-side with the non-profit Indiana University Student Outreach Clinic (IUSOC), which offers on-site services in medicine, law, social work, dentistry, and physical therapy. In the first half of 2012, BUCOP served 5,750 patients unable or ineligible to receive healthcare through other programs, and filled 1,750 free prescriptions for medication covering immediate and chronic medical conditions. As many as 50 Butler students per week volunteer for BUCOP; they have also offered smoking cessation programs, promoted healthy lifestyle changes, and secured grant funding and donations for BUCOP operations. “In BUCOP, our students develop their interprofessional skills by communicating with and working directly with the IU medical students and physicians, answering their drug information questions, and making therapeutic recommendations,” said Williams, assistant professor of pharmacy practice.

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)

Hello Summer! One day it's 88 on the temperature and humidity index. Next it's rainy and 62. Welcome to summer in Indiana. Good idea to make sure your summer wine collection is as flexible as the forecast. Here are some EZ drinking, affordable wines available around the Indianapolis area. Marques de Riscal Proximo, Rioja–It's big. It's bold. It's less than $11. Ripe aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry and hint of white pepper and cardamom. This could be your house BBQ wine for the summer. Falesco, Sangiovese, Italy–A smooth Italian operator that also delivers bright cherry and plum fruit flavors. Fabulous with spaghetti, pizza, and great base for sangria. Gran Verano Sauvignon Blanc, Chile–THE box for white wine lovers. Yes, I said BOX wine. Don't let that turn you away. Crisp, tangy, with notes of white grapefruit and lime. Each box equals 4 bottles. Can be found for $28 or less. Do the math...enjoy the refreshment. And remember box wine is PERFECT poolside, golf cart, picnic, or boat. NO glass! Sula Chenin Blanc, India–My favorite offbeat exotic wine of the summer. The chenin blanc grape can be juiced into a dry or sweet style of wine. This one is in the middle. Notes of honey dew melon, citrus and touch of fresh white grape flavor. Delicious with grilled chicken, seafood and a great glass to have in hand while watching cricket.... Aveleda Vinho Verde, Portugal–This zippy, limey, fizzy white from Portugal is the perfect "chill it and swill it" bottle for post lawn mowing, bike riding, roller blading days. Biltmore Christmas White, North Carolina–Christmas in July in this fruity, slightly sweet, totally delightful blend from the vintners at the North Carolina's Biltmore Estate. They made a limited amount in December and if you've been a good boy or girl you might be able to find a bottle at a local wine shoppe. Ho Ho Ho! Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia Wine Specialist who shares wit and wisdom nationwide in print, TV and radio, and is also an AWS-certified wine judge. Jill and doggyboy Harp live in Warfleigh, where she also consults and teaches in an effort to keep the doggyboy’s treat jar filled with biscuits and her freezer stocked with ice cream. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the right section of the top row which contains 2-5-6-7-9. The 8 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 6-7. The 8 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces above and below the 9. The only place left is between the 2-5. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Here is an article written by one of my trainer's brothers. Her name is Cori McCorkle and his is Tim Gentry. :)

If I can do it, anyone can! My brother was always a little overweight as we were growing up and not much of an active person. Like most of us, he always tried to start a diet and exercise, but usually found himself right back to his old ways. In the past 10 months he has lost 55 pounds from eating right and within the last 4 months he started doing cardio and strength training. I’ve been a support person for him to vent about his good days, bad days and just questions about what he is doing. I’m very proud of him and always show off his progress pictures. The people I show always seem to ask the same questions. They want to know what motivated him, at age 39, to finally do something about his health. Here are his answers and I hope that his story might motivate someone else to make a change, because if he can do it, you can do it!! There were several reasons I wanted to make a change in my life to get healthy and lose weight: A good friend of mine lost 200 pounds with lapband surgery. Suddenly he weighed less than me. Even though he had a medical procedure that helped him lose a lot of weight he still had to make a commitment and it's not just an easy thing to go and do. Seeing the changes in him both mentally and physically was very motivating to me. Also, seeing as we have always been competitive towards one another, I had to get in better shape than him. For years my wife has worked out hard. She’s has done an awesome job of getting in shape and maintaining a high level of fitness and activity. In 2012 she ran her first marathon. But she’s never been happy with her weight and constantly monitored her food and exercise obsessively. In February she made a decision to leave the women-only gym where she worked out to join a co-ed gym and asked if I wanted to do so as well. I took it as an opportunity to do something with her and maybe even get our kids involved. I recently turned 39 and next year is the big 40. I wanted to turn 40 in the best shape of my life. Although I haven't reached my goals, I've seen many changes along the way. I started walking...then walk/jogging and now spinning, yoga and road cycling. Pushing myself more and more along the way to make it more challenging but not so much that I might lose interest. I’ve never tracked my fitness in my adult life. But I do think that even though I have a little ways to go to reach my goals that I’m in the best shape that I’ve ever been in. I wanted to prove to myself and others that there is no magic diet, supplement, wrap or product that will transform your body into something you want to see in the mirror that was more satisfying, healthier and long lasting than a healthy diet and exercise routine. It seemed like everyday friends on Facebook were looking for or posting something that magically melted fat away. I wanted to be proof that there was no substitute for eating right and exercising. My brother also wrote some tips about exercising and diet that are too good not to share: Here are some of things that helped me that everyone should keep in mind if they are looking to make a serious change in their appearance: Don't put too much emphasis on the scale. Your bathroom scale can lie and unless you have it in the exact same spot and weigh yourself the same time of day you might not see what you want to see. Besides, it's not about numbers it's about how you see yourself in the mirror that matters most. Take measurements of your body and track lost inches each week. If you are building muscle and replacing fat with muscle the scale might not move but the

inches are melting away. Don't expect things to happen overnight. Most likely it took years to put on what you are trying to take off. Know that if you stick to what you are doing and make a lifestyle change with what you eat and how you exercise you will SEE results. Stay positive. Don't think of what you are doing as a diet. Be excited about eating healthier foods and reasonable portions. Be creative... search out clean foods to eat that present lower calorie totals. There are tons of ways to eat good tasting foods that are far better for you. You just have to search and find them. If you need help with ideas just ask me. Hire a personal trainer. Find someone who will push you to do more and encourage you along the way. Make this an appointment that can’t be rescheduled. If you can’t afford one, find a friend, a group and workout together. Know it gets easier as time goes on. Start slow and try not to do too much too fast. Set yourself up for success in an exercise routine that pushes you but you know you can do. Keep adding to it and before you know it you will be doing things you never thought you could. Just Do It! What do you have to lose? If you fall off, get back on. Every stop/start is a new chance to start fresh. Don't get down on yourself and focus on how you failed. Focus on how you are going to succeed the next time! I asked him how he felt today compared to how he did before he made the commitment to eat healthy and exercise regularly: Today my joints and muscles feel much better. I no longer ache when I get up like I used to (unless my muscles are recovering from a workout the day or two before). I can do more normal activities without being short of breath or fatigued and I feel bad when I've had more than two days away from the gym. I find that I want to go to the gym now every day. I want to try new cardio exercises that I didn’t have the confidence to do before. I want to ride my road bike 20-30 miles each day. I feel better mentally and physically when I have done some type of physical activity and I have more energy than I did before. When I see myself in the mirror or in pictures I still see myself as an overly fat guy who weighs 285 pounds. That still motivates me to keep going. Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. The Thrill of Bluebirds You need to remember that in 1950 Broad Ripple was a little village, Carmel was a farm community, Ravenswood was transitioning from a summer resort of the early 1900s, the American Village vicinity was Bacon Swamp, and the area around Glendale was on the brink of development. Not far beyond was open land. Wildlife in all these locals was quite different then. Bluebirds and purple martins, while common in that day, are rare today. I was taken by surprise this year to have visitors from the past in my neighborhood — bluebirds. These exquisite birds have become a rarity in urban or suburban areas. While out walking her dog, a neighbor was the first to spot a pair of bluebirds. As is usually the case when she sees something exciting, she called to report the noteworthy sighting. On my way to the grocery, I drove down the next street for a look around. To my utter amazement, the male bluebird flew right in front of me en route to a perfect branch on which to perch. Lucky me, I was overjoyed by this sighting on the same day as my neighbor had seen the birds. The bird I saw was an Eastern Bluebird, with deep blue on the top side of its body and rusty red on its throat and breast. When I see one I always think “Bluebird of Happiness.” This showy bird has been glorified in literature, song, and art. Traced back to Indian mythology, it is the symbol of cheerfulness, prosperity, hearth and home, good health, new birth, and springtime renewal. This little creature is probably among the most positive of symbols. Did you know that bluebird tattoos can signify finding one’s way, love, a well-traveled road, good luck, victory, and triumph? Sighting a bluebird at sea indicates one is close to land. Lore has it that sailors believed if their ship went down, a bluebird would fly over and carry souls to heaven. Another story maintains prisoners put bluebird images on their hands — wings on their thumbs and forefinger with the bird’s body in between. When they flapped their fingers and waved goodbye, the bluebird gave the appearance of flying to freedom. Bluebirds have figured into many songs including “Bluebird of Happiness.” 1934; “There’ll Be Bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover,” 1942 WWII song; “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” 1939; and “Bluebird” by Paul McCartney, 1971.

Compare the sentiments from the ‘30 to those of the ‘70s. The bluebird’s significance is steadfast. Somewhere over the rainbow Bluebirds fly. Birds fly over the rainbow. Why then, oh why can’t I To Paul McCartney Late at night when the wind is still I’ll come flying through your door And you’ll know what love is for I’m a bluebird Bluebirds disappeared from cities because they like open fields and nesting in hollow cavities. Houses and landscaped lawns do not interest them. They feed on insects, wild fruits, and berries. Rarely do they come to feeders; however, if you do have a country place, you can attract bluebirds by placing nesting boxes tailored to their specifications. If you ever have a chance to site or watch bluebirds in nature, take your time and enjoy their beauty. You won’t see them often in Broad Ripple but their vivid blue and rusty marking is undeniably memorable. It only takes a moment to understand how they have come to symbolize positive vibes. P.S. A little known fact: the Boy Scout troop at John Strange School is Troop 133. It takes 133 bluebird boxes to span from there to Lake Wawasee. Meet Jack of Hope Plumbing Jack Hope started Hope Plumbing seven years ago and has enjoyed pursuing his career in the Broad Ripple Village area. “It’s not about the ability to do the repair,” Jack said, “but having an understanding of what the people in Broad Ripple are trying to accomplish for their older home.” While Jack was getting his masters in philosophy, he did plumbing work on the side. As the calls began pouring in, Jack realized he had enough clients to run his own business. What began as a way of making money grew in to a passion for fixing things and eventually became a full-time business. “I loved the feeling of accomplishment when I would replace an old shower valve,” Jack said. “As we’ve expanded, I now do marketing and advertising. Figuring out how we want to brand ourselves is a lot of fun.” Although plumbing was never a childhood aspiration of his, Jack said he enjoys the business and has come to appreciate the ways in

Broad Ripple Tavern is hosting a party for the neighborhood on Monday, July 15 from 7pm-10pm! The picnic is aimed to raise funds for BRVA Public Safety and Beautification projects. There will be games and prizes in addition to drink samples and free picnic-style food for all attendees and donors. There is no admission fee or cover charge. The idea for the event came from Southern Wine and Spirits (SWS) and Broad Ripple Tavern (BRT) who wanted to do something to united the community and raise money for beautification and public safety projects in Broad Ripple. Last summer’s public safety concerns led to decreased visitation and morale in Broad Ripple and it had a major impact on the Broad Ripple hospitality industry. SWS and BRT hope the Village Picnic event unites industry folks and neighborhood residents in the common goal to keep Broad Ripple a great place to live, work and visit. Funds raised at the event will be donated to the Broad Ripple Village Association’s beautification and public safety initiatives.

He feels he has created a business that is a positive environment for his employees. “I really enjoy providing a good job for the people that work here,” he said. “Everybody can earn benefits, retirement savings, and go to school if they wish. I just don’t know if that’s something that all the plumbing companies in town offer.” Jack is married with a two-year-old boy. He says his family lives in the Meridian Kessler area and takes full advantage of the nearby Broad Ripple Village restaurants. “You run into nearly every personality type, income level, race, and age in Broad Ripple,” Jack said. “That is truly what I like about it.” He believes that Hope Plumbing is successful because of the meaning behind their slogan: “We specialize in older homes.” “We are inclined to offer solutions to keep the original look of the house,” he said. “We like Broad Ripple for the uniqueness of the house.” For more information, visit www.hopeplumbing.com
