TRAFFIC WARNING College southbound lanes changed again
Without warning from the city, the flow of traffic in the southbound lanes of College Avenue at Broad Ripple Avenue were changed again. Around the time of the garage construction, the left lane became left turn only, and the right lane became through and right turn. This turned into a nightmare for many drivers obeying that new configuration as they were run off the road by drivers ignoring the signs. The Gazette received many calls and emails complaining about this. Now, as the intersection is repaved, the configuration has been changed to allow cars in the left lane to turn left or go through, and the right lane can turn right or go through. For safety's sake, "Traffic Patterns Have Changed" signs should have been installed to warn drivers. Below: Getting a new intersection on July 24 in the early hours.

College Avenue. “We had been exposed to a hot sauce tasting bar in Key West a number of years ago and we thought it would be an interesting concept for the Midwest if we opened a retail outlet, which we did on May 15. It was probably about 10 years ago when we were first exposed to the idea. As things changed, we started to get Lava Lips & Tiki Trends serious about it. The idea is very unique to the Midwest—people can 4915 N. A variety of snacks at Lava Lips accompany their condiments. “In addition to hot sauce and salsa, we have fiery peanut brittle, hot caramel corn, chili flavored chocolates, caramels, hot jams, hot soy sauce, hot mustards, marinades and jellies. If you can find in it in a store, you won’t find it here. Dairy can subside the heat and take away the steam a little bit. For the simplicity of giving items to customers to sample, we prefer yogurt or cream cheese,” he added. Some of their sauces, salsas, rubs and dips are pictured at: www.lavalipsindy.com, but their flavors can be experienced at the store as Siemer emphasized, “Customers can try before they buy. You try it to see if you like it and have it apply to your eating, cooking or snacking. We stress flavor before heat with our hot sauces so you can adapt it to your eating and cooking. Most of these are made in small batches, somewhat similar to the microbrewing industry, so it parallels that. Often, hot sauce is related to one’s mood. If you’re in the mood for some heat, I’ll take you to the hotter sauces or if you prefer something milder for more of an everyday use, I’ll move you in that direction.” “The fruitier-based hit sauces tend to go with fish, then with a lesser extent to pork and

chicken with the hot sauces applying to red meat as well. You can add to a marinade to give it a little extra bite to include it on a glaze to spice up your ham. You want to taste the food and certain sauces can add to the flavor, so that it adds to the enjoyment of the food you’re eating. We can add a little heat and little flavoring to a potato salad as well. Sitting down and experimenting with the different hot sauces with your friends is a nice wrinkle to spend the evening with them. We can a little more heat to your date night,” he noted. An island setting complements Lava Lips. “The tropical decorations and Tiki bars came first. I started doing that a few years ago at shows and festivals. As that evolved, we decided to open a store with a hot sauce tasting bar. We can make anything Tiki, be it selling just the thatch or bamboo to building any type of structure that fits a customer’s landscape. We have a couple sizes of standard size bars and huts that we make and they are also available for rental. The tropical portion of the business is called Tiki Trends and the tasting bar is Lava Lips. I also have carved coconut fish and painted buoys that were made by local artists during our stays there. We wanted to be in Broad Ripple and this (location) just seemed to be a good spot with the area’s momentum going in a southern direction,” he noted. Tiki Trends furniture is made in Indianapolis. Lava Lips and Tiki Trends recently celebrated their grand opening July 20 with free hot sauce and salsa sampling, YATS creole cuisine and beverages from Upland Brewing. Their mild and spicy hours of operation are 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. They are closed on Monday. Lava Lips and Tiki Trends can add some sizzle to your summer days, yet keep you cool in their tropical-like setting just south of Broad Ripple.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle This might be my favorite two weeks of the year. The Indiana State Fair is in full swing, plus there will be great music at the Indy Folk Festival and SausageFest. Food and music, what more do you need?

I have an unnatural affection for the Indiana State Fair. And popcorn. Seriously, rarely a day goes by that I don’t eat popcorn. The 2013 agricultural theme is Year of Popcorn! I haven’t missed a day of the Fair in the last decade, even with the addition of more days and I hope to make all seventeen days this year too. I hope to see you there – you can usually find me around the Pioneer Village or the Home and Family Arts building with a big grin on my face and most likely some form of popcorn in my hand. There is no way that I can list all of the great things happening each day of the Fair; here are some highlights and I promise that you can find fun whatever days you happen to be there. Pioneer Village is in the northeast corner of the Fairgrounds. You’ll find old-timey farming demonstrations, antique tractors, barns, and Dick Reel. Dick is one of the many volunteers who use their vacation time to sleep on the Fairgrounds at night and recreate home and farm skills by day. Dick has demonstrated woodworking and carving for almost 20 years. Even more fascinating, he has worked on the fairgrounds every August since he was 14 and has wonderful stories about working at the grandstand and taking tickets at the entrance gates. You can see vintage farm machinery in action most days at 10:00, 2:00, and 4:00 (time vary on Sundays and a few other days). The Glass Barn is a brand new addition to the Fairgrounds and can be found on the north side of the Fairgrounds next to the MacReynolds barn. The new venue promises a clear look into the farming experience. I Carving the giant cheese sculpture. can’t wait to see it. The Coliseum is being renovated and you can tour the progress each day between 10:00 – 6:00. I can’t wait for a peek. Historic and Vintage Pianos will be on display each day, from 9:00 to 9:00 on the third floor (wind your way up the stairs after you check out the open show

photographs) of the Home and Family Arts Building. The Big Cheese Sculpture is in the DuPont Pavilion. You can watch the carving in the early days of the Fair and gawk at the sculpture. World’s Largest Ball of Popcorn. You read that right! The world’s largest ball of popcorn will be a mere mile from my house. It’s almost too much to think about. You can find it (and mostly likely me) in the Ag/Hort building each day from 9:00 – 9:00. The Daily Parade takes place each day – hence the name – although if I were in charge I would call it the Tractor Parade at 6:30, except for Friday, August 16. Souvenirs: The State Fair Gift Shop (across the entryway to the Midway) on Main Street always has fun State Fair hats, tees, and other goodies. In Pioneer Village you can purchase a freshly cut Nora in the 2011 parade. cedar shingle stamped Indiana State Fair with the year. The last two years there has been a die stamping machine making brass key chains before your eyes and ears. My favorite place to purchase a tee shirt is the MacReynolds Barn. Not only do they sell John Deere toys and goodies, but they generally have a shirt unique for the State Fair. Music: With the renovation of the Coliseum and lack of stage at the Grandstand all of the music at the State Fair this year is free once you’re in the gate. Main Street Stage (and you thought these streets had no name; on the south side of the of the infield track, across from the draft horse barn), the music typically starts at 11:30 and the last show ends at 8:00 PM. There is plenty of shade and picnic tables by the stage and it is strategically placed between the Dairy Bar, Pork Tent, and Cattleman’s Tent for a handy place to eat and enjoy the music. I don’t have enough room to list all of the shows but that stage tends to feature Indiana musicians. In fact on Saturday, August 3 from 10:00 AM – 1:30 the show will be a spotlight of Indianapolis musicians. Pioneer Village (in the north side of the red barn on the northeast side of the Fairgrounds – I sound like my dad with those directions), the music features oldtime, apron-wearin’ music. The music typically starts at 10:00 AM and lasts until about 6:30 PM when the parade starts. There are church pews for sitting to listen to the music. Make sure to have your program handy or something to fan yourself with, those pioneers were hardy stock, no air conditioning. Be sure and find Bill Bailey – he’ll be wearing overalls – not that that narrows it down, but if you’re lucky he’ll be playing the washboard and spoons. Thank him for organizing the music in Pioneer Village, it’s always a treat. I suggest downloading the Indiana State Fair app, checking out the website, or grabbing a program to have a rough idea of what you want to do while you’re

at the Fair. It’s easy to get caught up in one area and not make it around the Fairgrounds. We’re lucky enough to live close enough to make it feasible to visit the Fair several times and the Fair offers same-day pass outs if you want to break up the day. I suggest that you plan on picking up an Indianapolis Star on Monday, August 5 for the free ticket to use on Wednesday, August 7. I’ll see you there, for sure.

Indy Hostel Folk Festival and Anniversary Celebration Saturday, August 10 Indy Hostel 4903 Winthrop Ave - all-ages (under 13 free), $13 adv, $15 door
The tag line for the Indy Hostel anniversary festival is “10 Years of Bringing the World to Our Neighborhood,” which is true and awesome, but I think of Indy Hostel’s anniversary as “10 years of getting touring musicians off of Nora’s sofa.” I can’t believe that it has been almost a decade since my couch was a stop on the underground railroad of touring musicians! Not only is the hostel a good spot for musicians, but they have housed hundreds of international travelers, tourists, students, and other fascinating folks during that time. This year’s folk fest is spilling out to the street. A stretch of Winthrop Avenue from 49th Street to the north will be closed to make way for the stage and crafts people, food trucks and Upland beer. The day will start with a parade of kiddos and adults (me at least!) on bikes at 10:00. Feel free to decorate your bikes; there will be prizes for the children. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Earlier this year, I lost a dear friend and Broad Ripple lost a truly unique personality. Michael Lochmueller was a fixture for years at 54th and College. With beard in flow and staff in tow he could be seen often sipping coffee in this vibrant neighborhood. In 1968 Michael burned his identification and said he was no longer a human being, but an animal. At this time he began signing his paintings 'ANIMAL'. Michael's sojourn here contained much variety. He excelled in furniture design. He was once the proprietor of a nudist colony in Kentucky. Michael was once in a band 'The Four Horsemen' with the iconic John Cage. Below Ian Keske Martinez offers a poetic tribute to Michael 'ANIMAL' Lochmueller.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Kids’ Day at Edible Arrangements
Edible Arrangements Indy is happy to announce that we will be holding our first annual kids day event at our Glendale and Carmel stores. The Final Lab at The Art Lab

The Wine Scene as seen by The Broad of Ripple (Jill A. Ditmire)
White Wine for the Other White Meat I just tasted the 2012 vintage of the Vinhos Norte "Cruzeiro Vinho Verde" from Portugal. It's delicious. So much so that I had to email the importers, Value Vines out of New Jersey. I traveled with them in February of 2011 to Portugal and the Vinho Verde region. Graybull Organics distributes the wine here in Indiana. Here's my email and tasting notes to Adele and Carl with Value Vines: Just tasted the new vintage of the Cruzeiro Vinho Verde tonite. Its like the one I had when I was at the winery a few years back. Vintages very similar. Needs to open a bit as there is some sulphur blow off on top–I am sure they added a wee bit more CO2 for bottle and travel to US to compete with the other exported Vinho Verdes. A bit more fizz. But it goes away-- and then the fun begins. Subtle at first but clean and crisp from the get go. Flinty, mineral, almost like a Sancerre without the fruit–Hints of sage and thyme in the back notes. Great acid/sugar balance as it balances beautifully with neither more or less of either. I am impressed by this one. Its a great winery in a fantastic location-- on a stream in a bucolic setting. THIS bottle really TASTES like the place. SO of course I had to look back at my notes from the trip to see what I had written about "the place". Here is what I found: "We started at Vinhos Norte–one of the area's larger producers and the first to export wines out of the country with much of its production going to Germany and France with some box wine blends sold in Brazil. Not available in the US. The winery is located next to a stream in a wooded, hilly area that the morning of our visit was in bloom with camilla's and magnolia trees. The sun was shining and it was a glorious location to taste wine and then drink the wines over lunch. We sampled 9 of their wines including some red Vinho Verde wines–vinhao (VIN-YOW)... and also Padeiro (PUH-DARE-OH)... both really remind me of Chambourcin–French-American hybrid we grow in Indiana. We drank the wines with lunch that started with broa (BRO-UH) bread (corn, rye, wheat grains made like Indiana cornbread. YUMEEE) with a tuna/onion/mayo spread--then salty oven roasted potatoes (like mini yukon gold's in flavor and density) and "cabbage" (turns out to be turnip green tops)-more like broccoli rabe... and goat and pig. (LOTS of goat and pig. The Portuguese LOVE their "other white meat") " Vinho Verde wines are fresh, crisp, not too sweet, not too dry. They usually have a wee bit of "fizz" to them which cleanse the palate and perks the taste buds for the next sip of wine or bite of food. As State Fair season is upon us I think Vinho Verde with an ear of sweet corn or grilled pork chop would be a great way to combine the flavors of the past with the present. This and other Vinho Verdes retail for $10 or less and are available at wine shoppes throughout the Indy area. Jill A. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 1 in the middle section of the top row which contains 2-4-5. The 1 in the left section of the top row eliminates the three spaces in the row below the 2-5. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 4. The only place left is between the 2-5. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. Norma Wallman, who leads flower walks in Holliday Park and has spent the last 19 years preparing a list of all the flowers in the park (and when they bloom), has published "Wildflowers of Holliday Park: A Pictorial Field Guide Organized by Blooming Season".
Norma's new book is available for $20 at the Holliday Park Nature Center. The book features over 300 flowers. "We are so grateful to Norma for producing such a wonderful resource for Holliday Park," said Holliday Park Office Park Coordinator photo by Norma Wallman Katie Nell. Her wildflower hike on July 13 featured summer wildflowers and the wildflowers of the park's wetlands. (The park also has a prairie area which is now in full bloom as well) This book is a must for any nature lover or would be naturalist.
DIG AND DISCUSS AT HOLLIDAY PARK
On August 16 and 30, the Dig and Discuss group will meet from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to work in the rock garden and have a briefing by local landscaper Chris Turner. Contact the Park for other volunteer opportunities. Thanks to Indy Parks and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for coming to the park. The July 18 ISO outdoor concert was a hit with over 1,000 people braving the heat to see the symphony. Thanks again to the ISO, an anonymous donor who funded it, and Indy Parks!

Artsparkle, the Indianapolis Art Center summer fundraiser, is scheduled for August 18. It's a fun event where folks enjoy the warm summer night with food and music. According to Ashley Graves, over 20 food vendors are coming with great chefs. The Impalas will provide the music. Tickets are $75 for art center members and support the Art Center's Activities. A few more great films are scheduled for Friday nights at the Indianapolis Museum of Art's summer nights outdoor film series including Hoosiers on August 9. Then on August 16 is the classic, The Big Sleep, a great film in black and white from the 1940s with Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart and features the famous whistling line to Humphrey Bogart (“you just put your lips together and blow”). Also airing is Rushmore, a 1998 film on August 23. The last film is on August 30. The title has not yet been announced as movie-goers get to select one of 3 options.

On July 15, BRVA had a picnic at the Broad Ripple Tavern. According to Kristina Mazza of Lux Restaurants (who is the operations manager of the tavern), the event was a fundraiser for money to improve safety and security in the Village including new street lights. July BRVA Zoning committee meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com The July public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee was held on July 23 at Broad Ripple Park. There were three items on the agenda. 1) 911 Broad Ripple Avenue - This request is from the restaurant Sushi Bar (pictured
above), between Triton Tap and Subway. A variance of development standards is being requested from the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development to provide for a 350 square foot outdoor deck (200 square feet permitted with current zoning) along the Broad Ripple Avenue side of the building. The plan for the deck calls for leaving the existing concrete steps (currently covered by mulch) in place and building the deck over them. The lower deck wrap would hide the steps from view. The deck will add 28 to 30 new seats for the restaurant. There was a commitment added to not enclose the deck to make it into a year-round room. The committee voted to support this request. 2) 5915-25 College Avenue - This agenda item was for information only. Tom Willey and Scott Lindenberg came before the committee to discuss their plans to build a 2.5 story office building on the lot just to the north of Fox Stained Glass at 59th and College Avenue. There are currently two houses on the two lots that would be combined for this project. The proposed project would be two floors approximately 2400 square feet each. The top floor would about 1200 square feet, set back from the College Avenue side. Plans are for the ground floor to be a small retail business and the upper floors to be office space, including the office space of the project's developers, Reliant Partners. The building would occupy about 1/4th of the lot, with the remaining space used for a parking lot for 21 cars and a dumpster. The committee was receptive to the idea and offered many suggestions and design elements to consider. 3) 1111 E. 61st Street - No one from Buckingham Development appeared for this agenda item. The committee explained that concerns have been raised about tree and foliage removal on the site during the apartment expansion taking place along 61st Street at the Monon Trail. In 2010, commitments were agreed to about the removal and replacements of plants. The committee is following up to assure that those commitments are being adhered to. The next public meeting of the committee will be Tuesday, August 27, at 6 pm at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center.

I was excited that Laura asked me to write another article for the gazette and even more excited when she suggested I write about food. If you know me at all, you know I could talk about food all day! So, I will pick just one topic from under that huge umbrella and because I am writing for Ripped in the Ripple, I will keep it on the 'lighter' side. INDULGENCES, I am definitely on board with going all in on special occasions; life is too short not to. However, if you are like me, that sweet tooth calls to me on a regular basis. So, I have a few tips & tricks that help me crush those cravings without having to deprive myself. Most of us know about replacing oil/butter with applesauce and egg whites for whole eggs or whole wheat flour and sugar substitutes. Therefore I had to dig a little deeper into my basket of tricks and pull out these lesser known suggestions. Let's start with the magical, protein rich, fiber packed legume! Yup, beans in your sweet treats and no one, except you, will be the wiser. Use black, cannellini, red or even lentils pureed with a bit of water to replace 1/2 of your butter, shortening or oil in your recipe. Match the color of your bean to what you are making and no one will suspect a thing. Problems with gluten? Or not! Try this flour-less cookie, chewy and rich, it is sure to satisfy. The pureed chick pea does the trick, checkout this link for the details, www.loseitwithalexis.com. I have even been so bold as to make chocolate chip cookies with whole chick peas! Jessica Seinfeld has the recipe in her cookbook and yes, they look funny, but everyone enjoyed them. You can also puree beans and add them to soups and stews as a thickener instead of the traditional rue base of flour and butter. OH wait, that is savory and could lead me down a whole other road. Back to sweets! Let's talk brownies, cause everyone loves a brownie! Well, whether you bake from scratch or take the box mix shortcut (as I do) there are things to try. With a box mix, stir it together with 1 can of pure pureed pumpkin. It's a bit of a workout as the batter is really thick, but this brownie is almost like fudge without the pudge! If you make brownies from scratch, try adding 2/3 C of raw, grated beets and then reduce the called for sugar by 1/4 C Reduced sugar; good! Added moisture, antioxidants and fiber; GREAT! One other really quick trick for pre-made cake mix is, diet pop. Believe it or not, it just takes 1 can of soda stirred into a cake mix to create a super light and moist cake or cupcakes. Get creative and use root beer, Dr Pepper, cherry cola in chocolate cake, lemon/lime, cream soda or orange in a white cake; the options are endless! If pies and crisps are more to your liking, try these ideas. Not a fan of making/ rolling out those pie crusts? Me neither, but I love the graham cracker crusts. Love it even more because I know you don't need butter to make it stick together! just pulse 10 sheets of graham crackers in a processor till you have fine crumbs; add 2 Tbsps of low fat milk and then pulse about 30 secs. Press into 9 inch pie pan and bake @ 350 for 10-12 mins. Need a crumble topping? Follow your usual recipe, but only use 1, maybe 2 Tbsp of butter and 4 Tbsp of apple sauce; blend these together and cut into dry ingredients. You can even reduce the sugar because the apple will add some natural sweetness. Or you could just throw on homemade granola during the last 5 mins of baking. There is a great recipe on So Be Fit's facebook page. Like I said at the beginning, I could go on all day, but I will leave you with my favorite toppings for all these sweets. 1) Greek yogurt blended with vanilla, or other extract and Splenda. 2) Cool Whip light, don't use the fat free, personally, a bit plastic-tasting. 3) Fat Free Reddi Whip, even good straight from the can into your mouth. Oh wait, I don't do that! 4) Blue Bunny fat free vanilla ice cream is 'go to', because after trying many duds, I found this has great flavor and texture. Happy eating and treating! Corn and soybeans comprise more than 50% of our farmers’ cash crops. So it is fitting that a corn product is the symbol of the 2013 Indiana State Fair — yummy POPCORN. But let me back up to share more tidbits about corn. It is one versatile plant. Corn is one of the basic “three sister plants.” According to Iroquois legend, corn, beans, and squash are three inseparable sisters that grow and thrive together. Indiana produces dent corn (field corn used for animal feed, ethanol, and a long list of extracted products), sweet corn, popping corn, and Indian corn for autumn decoration. You can enjoy corn on cobs or as hominy, polenta, corn flour, meal. Also known as maize, corn is one of the oldest crops, valued by humans and livestock for the energy its starch and sugar provide. Just why popcorn pops is intriguing. Each kernel of popping corn contains both moisture and oil. As kernels are heated, steam pressurizes inside the hull, and starch in the kernel gelatinizes. When heated to the breaking point, the hull gives way and the crisp white fluff takes shape. Did you know a kernel of popcorn is a “flake?” The most common flakes are either butterfly (an irregular shape with wings) or mushroom (large ball-shaped). Butterfly flakes are more tender and fragile, having less hull. Mushroom flakes are often used for caramel corn. Both flakes can be found on a single cob of popping corn. There are cobs that can be put in microwaves so kernels pop right off of the cob. Popcorn has come of age. The basic buttered popcorn is now being glamorized with white cheddar, nacho, caramel, garlic, herbed, kettle variations or pressed into cakes, balls, or squares. It’s a great snack at the Fair, on a car ride, or at a movie. Creative commercialization has given us delicious blends such as the buttered, cheese, and caramel combination all mixed together. The recent twist of peppermint or chocolate drizzle for the holidays has elevated popcorn to the gourmet ranks. Popped corn seems to be a staple in our childhoods. How well I remember getting little bags of the salty treat when trick or treating on Halloween. Another fond memory goes back to a time when I was visiting cousins who lived in Irvington. Having spent a long weekend with them, I expected the kind of Sunday evening supper we usually had at home, sandwiches, fruit, and a cookie. Not at my cousins. We were given milk and popcorn in front of the TV… as much as we wanted to eat while watching Ed Sullivan. It’s amazing that more than 50 years later I still remember popcorn for dinner because it was such a novelty. With the State Fair offering fun so close to Broad Ripple, this may be a good year to be a fair-goer. Meet Dr. Kolman of Kolman Dental Dr. Paul Kolman of Kolman Dental started his business five years ago when the previous dentist in that space decided to retire. He said the transition was smooth and the timing was perfect. “You might expect there would be issues coming into new patients that were used to someone else, but there weren’t,” Dr. Kolman said. “It was a smooth transition. Patients coming in were glad to have another dentist they could come to see, and I really couldn’t have asked for anything better.” He says there are a number of things he enjoys about dentistry. “I get to see and meet new people all day long,” he said. “It’s a good feeling when someone walks out smiling because you were able to help them.” By having his own practice, he is able to spend more time with his family and help the community. “It allows me to get involved in the community in ways I didn’t anticipate. Current Activities in Broad Ripple Village Come to National Night Out:
National Night Out is a nation-wide event to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, policecommunity partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back! National Night Out in Broad Ripple is on Tuesday, August 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bike Line (6520 Cornell Ave.) This is the BRVA’s inaugural NNO event! Attendees will interact with Public Safety Officials and get tips on how to prevent and report crime. The BRVA will be sharing information about our Block Captain/Block Club program and a new program to help keep Bike Patrols in the area! There will be booths and exhibits on crime prevention and public safety, music, prizes, activities for kids and food and drinks. Everyone is invited! We hope to see you there!
Shell Site Vote:
In response to community feedback about the proposed development at 6349 College Avenue (commonly known as the Shell site) and the apartments nearby, the BRVA’s LUD Committee provided certain conditions to the developer. A special meeting held on July 8 at the Indianapolis Art Center gave the developer an opportunity to respond to those conditions. At that time, the LUD committee voted (Yes 5, No 3, Abstain 1) in favor of recommending the BRVA Board support the zoning variance request. The BRVA board met on July 9 at the Indianapolis Art Center. Following a report from LUD Chairman, the board voted (Yes 9, No 3, Abstain 1) to support the LUD recommendation to support the zoning variance. Flood Wall Meetings:
Indianapolis Department of Public Works will hold an open house series to help residents better understand the Final Supplemental Environment Impact Statement (FSEIS). A Successful Village Picnic:
Southern Wine and Spirits partnered with Broad Ripple Tavern (BRT) and the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) to help raise money for beautification and lighting projects in Broad Ripple. Together, they hosted Village Picnic at BRT on July 15th. This was the first Village Picnic event, and it raised nearly $800. Approximately 300 people attended the event. Francisco from the Ball & Biscuit on Mass Ave won the "Official Summer Cocktail of Broad Ripple" bartender contest with his cocktail "Summer Fling."
Annual Sidewalk Sale:
Many of the small, independent businesses in Broad Ripple Village have organized a sidewalk sale for Sunday, August 4th from 9am-2pm. This annual sale has been in Broad Ripple for approximately ten years. This is the perfect opportunity to walk around the Village and find bargains from the 17 participating businesses! There will be tables full of great deals in front of each store. Customers should look for the balloons to identify the areas with sales!

I end up at Indy CD & Vinyl more than I should.” He says he loves the community feel that Broad Ripple has. “Everyone looks out for one another and is so supportive. You might not expect certain businesses to help each other, but everyone wants to see everyone else succeed.
