alison@broadripplegazette.com On June 1, 2013, Rhiannon Bibbs’s dream became a reality. This date marks the grand opening of Bibbs’s store, The Badd and The Beautiful, which sells clothes, jewelry, and accessories. Bibbs studied apparel merchandising at Indiana University and worked for various retail stores, gaining experience along the way. “I have had the opportunity to work with amazing professors, The Badd and The Beautiful retail managers, and entrepreneurs who helped 841 Westfield Boulevard to expand my retail (317) 965-6629 knowledge and enhance www.baddandbeautiful.com my passion,” said Bibbs. Finding the location was a happy accident for Bibbs. “While eating dinner one night, I noticed the previous boutique had a closing sign in the window. At that time, our boutique was only online and I didn’t have plans to open a store just yet,” she said. Regardless, Bibbs and her mother, Mandy, decided to open up the boutique. “The location was perfect and Broad Ripple is a great neighborhood, so I decided it would be a great opportunity to open a store and continue to build the brand,” she said. The store’s theme is centered on the idea that each woman has her own unique style, which can change from day to day. “I am inspired by the woman with fashion versatility. Some days I want to be a tomboy and wear sneakers, but other days I feel like wearing a dress. I try to buy merchandise that embodies all women,” said Bibbs. The annual Broad Ripple Village Sidewalk Sale was held on August 4. It was a beautiful day and shoppers found many bargains. The next Village store event will be the Fall Gallery Tour on October 11 from 5 to 9pm.

These unique items allow the store to stand out from others in Broad Ripple and create a new atmosphere for women. “Fashion is about exploring and wearing what you like,” she said. “Our store tries to encourage a woman to be confident and embrace her style.” Not only does Bibbs seek out unique items, she keeps affordability a big factor in her store, keeping all of the items under $50. Most of the merchandise comes from wholesale vendors, but some items come from local designers. I am thoroughly enjoying the Indiana State Fair this year, especially the music. There are still great bands to be heard on the Marsh Free Stage near the 4-H buildings in the northwest side of the Fairgrounds. Thursday, August 15, 7:30 – Montgomery Gentry Friday, August 16, 6:30 – Jennie Devoe, 8:00 – Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band (if I was in charge of labeling this lineup I’d call it “Indiana’s Most Beloved Musicians.”) Both acts are diverse on the surface, but have a good dose of the blues running through them. Saturday, August 17, 7:00 – Blood, Sweat, & Tears Sunday, August 18, 1:00 – Indiana Folk Music and Dulcimer Society (Pioneer Village Opry House)

The White River Arts & Music Festival (WARMfest) will take place over Labor Day weekend in Broad Ripple Park. The Broad Ripple owned and operated, Howald Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing company has signed on as the presenting sponsor of the festival. Company owner Larry Howald says the event’s vision to restore and promote the White River area to its former grandeur struck a chord with his family owned business. “I was born and raised here in Indianapolis. My dad Wayne started Broad Ripple Heating and Air Conditioning back in the 1960s. I remember working in his place, riding around Broad Ripple in his trucks and spending time along the river” says Howald. “Partnering and investing in an event like this that’s fun and supports the community is a great way for our company to give back.” WARMfest will feature three days of live music on five stages in addition to the Indie Arts & Vintage Marketplace, and will focus on educating the public and raising environmental awareness. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Carl G. Fisher Society (CGFS), a non-profit with a vision to restore and promote the White River to return it to how it was in the past. Bands include Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Mayer Hawthorne, G. Love & Special Sauce, JJ Grey & Mofro, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue, Delta Spirit, RJD2, Red Wanting Blue, 3rd Bass, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and a good dose of local bands. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I ran across this old column I wrote three years ago. I found it interesting to re-read and thought you might as well. A lot has happened in three years. I will share that at the end.

As a pet food retailer I was invited by one of my vendors to tour their plant on June 29th. The company hosting the tour was Eagle Pack in Mishawaka, Indiana. This is a very established company of many years. Because it is made in Indiana, we the citizens are loyal to the brand. We love to buy local. To that I say “Yeah! And keep it up”. It is one of my best selling brands. When companies are family owned and they have their blood, sweat and tears invested they are passionate about quality more than bottom line. Recently the founder of Eagle Pack died and with him so did his family dedication. The family sold the company to another large premium pet food company – Wellness. With the merge came the new name (WellPet) and the concern of retailers as to would the quality remain the same. Rumors were rampant as sales reps changed and internet users shared their qualms. You see this also happened with the IAMS brand. It started out in independent stores, where those retailers made the brand as only a small retailer can. They have more ability to talk to the customer in depth and can develop a following. I am told before my days in the business this was THE brand. It was sold to Proctor and Gamble, taken out of independent stores and stocked in big box stores. Now WellPet, needed to allay our fears that this might be history repeating itself. None of us want to see our best sellers go to the big stores. So a chartered bus was ordered and many of us were invited up to join other independent retailers from Indiana and Michigan to take the tour, have a BBQ on the lawn and

have a question and answer session with the new company executives. Kevin, the plant manager with Eagle Pack for thirty years, was our guide. At times the process was deafening so I missed a lot of what was said but my eyes got the picture. We followed as the cat duck formula was being processed. This is a holistic formula with cranberries and blue berries. We were told that these components are all human grade and procured from the same source to the cereal companies. I’ll cut to the chase by telling you how immaculate the facility is and most importantly how on top of quality control they are by taking samples every hour and detailing reports in their labs. Raw materials delivered by their vendors are tested and sampled before acceptance. The manufacturing decision makers all have food industry backgrounds. They treat this pet food manufacturing no differently than the other human food plants they worked in. I’m not so sure that I am convinced that they will remain loyal to the independents but it was a good start that they care enough to open their doors. I am hopeful that we will remain strong partners. It was especially good to know that among us they had invited the editor of Whole Dog Journal, Nancy Kearns, from California. This is a publication that is the industry bible. Every February the top super premium dry dog foods are released with great detail on their manufacturing methods and ingredients. She demands company transparency. Those that don’t comply are called out. Those that excel are recognized and published as “approved”. It is imperative for a manufacturer to be included in this issue and suicide not to be. Fast forward three years later, this past June we were again invited to tour the plant only this time we were a small select group and no charter bus was ordered. They had not been loyal to independents. Their product, for nine months, was tried at PetCo and Pet Smart. The Holistic Select Brand was recently taken out from those stores and brought back to independents only. It seems we little guys do matter after their trial didn’t pan out so well. There were many changes on the tour itself. These past years have seen pet food recalls, so the manufacturing process has become even more safety stringent. Views were from behind glass windows, walks from room to room were through foot baths, etc. Many new regulations are in place industry wide. Two years ago Proctor and Gamble did it again. They went after another pet food manufacturer that was totally top notch. The owner sold it and retired. And then, last spring there were two salmonella concerns followed by voluntary recalls. The company is Natura whose brands are Evo, Innova, California Natural, Karma and Healthwise. They will be back in stock soon, if not already, but it has been a challenge for the company, the consumers, and the retailers. We had been proactive and as soon as we heard they had been bought by P&G, pretty much ushered them out the door. They are not loyal to independents despite their lip service. We are a dying breed. We will try to put an 3 in the left section of the bottom row which contains 1-7-8-9. The 3 in the left section of the top row eliminates the space between the 1-8. National Night Out in Broad Ripple

National Night Out, a nation-wide event to promote involvement in crime prevention activities, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back, was held on August 6 at The Bike Line, 6520 Cornell Ave [C5 on map].

Food was provided by Kroger and Little Caesars Pizza. Several local businesses set up booths. Games were available for the kids. Several Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers attended on their patrol bikes.

Every other Thursday the Broad Ripple Brewpub (65th and Cornell Avenue) hosts an event called "Tails and Ales." The event is coordinated by Move to Act, which parents many different smaller animal shelters around Indiana. Each shelter sets up a booth and information about their shelter and brings a few adoptable dogs to show off.

There’s a lot of news in the Ripple: This week we have news on the Meridian Bridge, Cornell Avenue and other projects plus a Labor Day run in the Ripple. Finally, a timely safety hearing is scheduled. And lots more. Here we go: Meridian Street Bridge Project Nears Completion The Meridian Street Bridge over White River is again open to four lanes of traffic. The City will continue to do some work under the bridge but it will remain open to traffic through this work. They expect all work to be complete by the end of August weather pending.

Comment Period Extended for Corps Flood Damage Reduction Project At the Indianapolis Department of Public Works' request, the Army Corps of Engineers has extended the comment period for the Final Scoping Environmental Impact Statement for the project until September 6, 2013. Residents are encouraged to read the documents before attending one of the three DPW sponsored open houses. All three open houses will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 6050 N. Meridian Street (Lilly Room). Tuesday, Aug. 20, 5–7pm, Thursday, Aug. 22, 1–3pm, Saturday, Aug. 24, 10-noon. Copies of the FDSEIS are available for review and at http://bit.ly/indynorthlevee and in the Indianapolis Public Library, 40 E. St. Clair St. All public comments should be submitted by residents to the Corps via the project website. Mail written comments to Colonel Luke T. Leonard, District Commander, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Louisville District, PO Box 59, Attn: CELRL-PM-P-E, Louisville, KY 40201 Cornell Avenue resurfacing begins Work was scheduled to start last week on the Cornell Avenue surfacing. As the City started the drainage repairs, they will better know a closure schedule. Drainage improvements can be complicated so they ask that resident and business owners be patient as they determine the closure schedule. RebuildIndy Facebook and @IndyDPW Twitter pages will detail closure information moving forward. Thanks to Leslie Gordon of the Department of Public Works for the updates. Piano Playing in the Ripple Did you enjoying the piano which was part of Go Ahead and Play. This was a project of the Women's Fund of Central Indiana which placed the Art Rocks Piano at the Monon Trail Shelter (north of 65th). Thanks to artists Vandra Pentecost and Broad Ripple Art Fair participants. The sponsor was Apparatus and the piano was donated by Mary Davidsen. Thanks Mary! There were 19 other pianos placed around the region. Go Ahead and Play was a public art project lead by 6th-12th grade students using their talent. It was completely a studentguided project. The pianos were there from August 1-18. State Representative Holds Safety Forum, Backs Amtrak Service to Chicago State Representative Christina Hale will host a public safety meet up on September 6 in the Nora Library Branch, 8625 Guilford Avenue. She also recently weighed in on Amtrak's plan to end train service to Chicago unless the state subsidizes it. Ripple Effect Run / Walk Set for Labor Day The Ripple Effect is a 4 Mile Run/Walk that will highlight Broad Ripple village. The event will be on Labor Day (Sept 2) morning. The event will start at Broad Ripple Station near Broad Ripple Ave and Compton Street. The event will finish near Winthrop and Westfield Blvd. Parking is available in Broad Ripple High School lots and in surrounding neighborhoods. Note at press time the event did not have a sponsor. For more information, contact tuxbro@indy.rr.com Ride Your Bike to the State Fair Don't forget to ride your bike to the State Fair which closes on Sunday, August 18. Also, take the Fair Train including from the station on 71st. You can park for free at the Fair at the Pedal and Park lot. Indy Connect Schedules Hearing on New Line which could serve Broad Ripple. IndyConnect is having a hearing to comment on new rapid bus route service including a proposed Red Line which would serve Broad Ripple. A public comment hearing will be held Thursday August 22 from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the North United Methodist Church, 3808 N. Meridian Street. Funding is still needed for all the proposed lines. Indianapolis has been leading the way in adopting all cultures and helping those cultures grow and flourish. Today the Native Hawaiian Communities have come to Indianapolis looking for a chance to grow and flourish, so they too can help this cultural mecca in Indianapolis to become richer and stronger. In a historic move, the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs (AHCC), founded in 1918 and located in Honolulu, Hawai'i, voted unanimously to charter the largest single block of Hawaiian Civic Clubs (HCC) in its history. Through hard work and determination, community leaders in the Midwest came together to form six individual Hawaiian Civic Clubs utilizing efforts to make their vision a reality; The Midwest Hawaiian Civic Club alliance brought together members based in Elmwood Park, Illinois, Indianapolis, Indiana, Minneapolis, Minnesota, Kansas City, Missouri, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Native Hawaiian communities throughout the Midwest now stand together through an alliance of Hawaiian Civic Clubs in the region, poised to take the area by storm as the representatives of their culture. Additional communities in the Midwest are preparing to form more Hawaiian Civic Clubs with the assistance of positive attitudes of the pioneering leaders of the original six Midwest clubs. We come to you as a resource to serve Indiana by teaching and perpetuating the Hawaiian history, culture, legends, and traditions; and, by serving the people and other non-profit organizations by volunteering; fundraising and providing scholarships to students, in need who meet the Club’s guidelines and criteria. Broad Ripple’s Howald Heating, Air Conditioning and Plumbing is investing in local environmental efforts signing on as the presenting sponsor of the White River Arts & Music Festival (WARMfest) to take place Labor Day weekend (Aug. 31- Sept. 2) in Broad Ripple Park. The locally owned and operated company has served the Indianapolis and surrounding communities since the early 1960s (when it operated first as Broad Ripple Heating and Cooling). The company’s involvement with WARMfest, along with the efforts of several other local organizations and cultural groups, including Indy Parks & Recreation, Broad Ripple Music Fest and the Broad Ripple Village Association, will aid in the festival’s mission of restoring and preserving the White River. Company owner Larry Howald says the event’s vision to restore and promote the White River area to its former grandeur struck a chord with his family owned business. “I was born and raised here in Indianapolis. My dad Wayne started Broad Ripple Heating and Air Conditioning back in the 1960s. I remember working in his place, riding around Broad Ripple in his trucks and spending time along the river” says Howald. “Partnering and investing in an event like this that’s fun and supports the community is a great way for our company to give back.” WARMfest will feature three days of live music throughout the entire run on five stages in addition to the Indie Arts & Vintage Marketplace, and will focus on educating the public and raising environmental awareness. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Carl G. Fisher Society (CGFS), a non-profit with a vision to restore and promote the White River to return it to how it was in the past. Indy Parks & Recreation, Keep Indianapolis Beautiful and CGFS will support efforts to remove invasive honeysuckle from the shoreline of Broad Ripple Park. With the aid of volunteers, these invasive species will be cleared on Wednesday Aug. 7, a full 3 weeks before the events, with a goal of ensuring that the White River is once again viewable from the park and, through an agreement already in place, that the effort is continued. It’s All Good In Our Hood! Hello readers! You may or may not know that from time to time I am blessed with being a pretty regular contributor to the Health and Fitness section of the Indianapolis Star, and it is something that I really enjoy. Yesterday (then August 9th), much to my surprise I was featured in an article entitled “25 things I love about Broad Ripple”. My mug was on the slide “Small Business Owners” and I was SO honored! So, that gave me an idea… This article is going to be about my favorite things in SoBro and Meridian-Kessler  The best neighborhood in the world in my humble opinion! 1. The 54th Street Shops: DUH! Haha… This is where my studio So.Be.Fit. is located along with several others such as Posh Petals Florist, Zest Cafe, and Nicole Taylor’s Italian Deli/Market. Since I have been at this location for about 4 ½ years, this area has exploded! Positive growth, heavy foot/bike traffic, and a very community oriented vibe all combine to put this at the top of the list. If you haven’t been there do yourself a favor and go. 2. The best running/biking courses in the city: Between the Monon Trail, Canal Tow Path, Butler campus, Crown Hill cemetery, and the Art Museum, getting the motivation for a workout isn’t nearly as challenging. And most of them connect and offer drinking fountains. Get off that darn treadmill and explore these areas! 3. 56th and Illinois intersection: I love this area! Between the meat market, old firehouse, cupcake shop and sidewalk café, it always takes me back in time as though it looks the same as it may have 50 years ago (well, I guess besides the Starbucks, but we will keep it!). It is very charming! 4. The Fresh Market: Yes, although it may burn a small hole in your pocket at times, you would find few that would argue its benefit to SoBro. Yes, we miss Atlas, but it ain’t bad to be able to grab a few items without having to go all the way up to Broad Ripple in rush hour. Now if they could have only designed that parking lot better… 5. Local Holes in the Wall: Pawn Shop Pub, Moe N Johnny’s, Twenty Tap, The Red Key to name a few. What is better than a watering hole with good, cheap eats in walking distance from your house? Not much says I! And it is rare to go any given night and not see the owner happily slaving away in their proudly owned establishment. 6. Rocky Ripple Neighborhood: This quirky little town always puts a smile on my face. I run here often as well, and I also have a good buddy who lives on the river who I visit often. Every house has its own “appeal” whether it be peace signs and dream catchers all over the yard, or watercraft variously stacked (that anyone in the town is welcome to use). They have their own festival every September with bands, art booths, food and kids events. Check it out! 7. The Rivi: Talking about going back in time! This club gives new meaning to the term “old school”! Its biggest draw is hands down its huge pool with and separate diving tank. Nope, they haven’t changed it almost at all since they opened in 1933, but that is part of its appeal. And it is well supported by the neighborhood; and why not? Who would want to leave our neighborhood anyway?! 8. Local Bike/Fitness Shops: Namely, Indie Bike, Bicycle Exchange, Blue Mile and Bike Line. You gotta hand it to those that open up a shop in an industry that could be crushed by big box chains. But they chose the right area. This neighborhood PROUDLY supports local even if it means shelling out a few more bucks. But it is worth it as their customer service is awesome! Try going to a big box store and see if they know your name AND your shoe size by heart. 9. 49th and Penn(sylvania): Ahhhh. I could go on and on about this intersection! I met nearly the entire neighborhood here while slinging omelets for many years at Café Patachou and this is where I fell in love with the hood.  Where else would you WANT to wait 2 hours for breakfast, while having the super friendly service people at the Shell station rotate your tires, and pick up your dry cleaning at Meridian Heights Cleaners when you’re done? 10. Hinkle Fieldhouse: Wow, I just realized that I clearly am intrigued with “old things” haha. This building is just awesome and of course I don’t have to explain myself here. I go into this amazing structure at least a couple of times per week to get water during a run and each and every time, I am in awe. Not to mention the experience of attending a Butler Basketball game. They are like no other! A few times this year I ran into Brad Stevens randomly and he always greeted me with a smile and hello although he has no idea who I am. We will miss you dearly Brad! 11. Locally Grown: This darling fruit stand sits just across the street from So.Be. on 54th street. I swear the friendly owner Ron must live there as it always seems open and if it is…yep he’s there; and the reggae music is in full effect. Ever had one of their pies? Well, maybe you shouldn’t as it has addictive properties. Oh yeah, but they mainly offer produce ;) 12. Canterbury Park: This little gem is tucked away on the Monon Trail between 54th and 56th street and boasts a great play area and volleyball court. I often

embarrass a client by making them workout there while the many kids point and laugh. Oh yeah and we even have a park that now has a flushable toilet! Take that Northside Monon! 13. St. Joan of Arc French Market Festival: St. Joan is literally a stone’s throw from my home I love the view of the bell tower from my kitchen window. Every September they have a huge throw down festival that is one of my favorite things of the year. Bands play literally all day; and we are talking the kind that draw a dancing crowd, which is a hilarious sight to see if you have been fortunate enough to have seen my family and I out there. The food vendors are from all local places such as Yats, King Ribs, and the Sun King is flowing! And is supports the school so it is for a great cause. Okay, I better stop now, as I could do this until the number 100 and beyond. While I started writing this article knowing my adoration of this area and its people, I now realize I love it even more than I thought! If you don’t live around the So.Bro. or Meridian-Kessler neighborhood, come check us out. One thing is for sure, it’s like a box of chocolates…you’re never really sure what you’re going to get. Putting the Fly into Fishing Getting out in your backyard space…. outdoor cooking areas, flower and vegetable gardens, small fish ponds, bird feeder sanctuary…can rest the mind. Another way that you can manage your stress involves leaving your backyard and venturing to the lakes, ponds, creeks, and rivers of Indiana for the sport of fly fishing…the backyards of Indiana where you can enjoy a great activity for fun and relaxation! Most people have the incorrect perception that fly fishing is done primarily for trout. Our opportunities for trout in Indiana involve a few lakes and even fewer streams. The majority of our lakes, rivers, and creeks are warm water and provide great habitat for bass, panfish, walleye, pike, muskie, salmon, steelhead and numerous other species. Our water quality for fishing is very good. Except during times of increased My favorite fishing buddy. precipitation our water flows with good visibility and is very relaxing to wade with wading shoes and shorts or fish from a canoe, kayak or larger boat. The most frequent question in our store is where to fish. The Delorme of Indiana (book of large maps) is the starting point for this discussion. The Delorme offers Topo maps of the entire state. Indiana is divided into 48 sections and each one is detailed with streams, lakes, back roads, recreation areas, etc. The majority of the streams and lakes in Indiana are open to wade as long as private property is not crossed to gain access. If you have questions about navigability of Indiana water visit the DNR website or talk with a conservation officer stationed in the county you are visiting. There are people who enjoy making fly fishing complicated, but at FlyMasters of Indianapolis we make it simple and fun. Our experience has taught us that the best way to teach the sport is to have a school that consists of three phases. 1. In-store Introduction: After we close at 6 p.m. in the evening, we have an in-store session that explains the sport and its equipment. Basic knots are taught and questions answered. The schedule for these sessions is on our website (www. flymasters.com) or you can call us at 317-570-9811. 2. Pond Lessons: The pond phase is scheduled by appointment when you have time between Monday thru Saturday mornings during daylight hours. Most people complete more than one class at the pond since few people learn everything in one appointment. They are done individually or sometimes with two people. The pond lessons are repeated until the student has developed adequate skills to go fly fishing on his/her own. 3. Moving Water: The last phase is done in a small creek. All you need is a pair of shoes you can get wet and quick drying shorts or pants. In moving water, fish lay in different areas to feed, and we use different methods and flies to catch those fish. All three phases are included in the $100 school fee and are taught locally. You have a state with lots of available water and species of fish, and a great resource readily available for instruction. All you need to add is a little equipment and a tank of gas. Other than saltwater species, you can catch all of the popular species in your own Indiana backyard. In Marion County I have caught smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white bass, catfish, panfish, sauger, and Eagle Creek recently stocked Muskie. Just slightly over an hour from Indianapolis you can visit Franklin County (Brookville, Indiana). There you can catch rainbow and brown trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white bass, striped bass, walleye, and catfish. Many possibilities await the angler right here in Indiana. The IMPD are a very visible and welcome presence on the Monon Trail. From their Bicycle Patrols to their Equestrian Patrols (my personal favorite) and their Motorcycle Patrols.
