Tom and Greg Blackman own EYE Can See, located at 6311 Westfield Boulevard, Suite 103-A. Their products and services provide support for individuals with low vision or blindness that assists them in their daily lives. “I have a master’s degree in blind rehabilitation and have taught Orientation and Mobility for many years and then developed an interest in adaptive technology which includes low vision devices and computer access software for blind individuals as well as for students with learning disabilities. We started the EYE Can See business around 16 years ago. We’ve been here in Broad Ripple for a little 6311 Westfield Boulevard over a year,” Blackman explained. (317) 258-6747 The selection of their Broad Ripple www.eyecanseeinc.com office has been advantageous. “We thought that this seemed like a good and practical location that is easy for people to find. We were looking for a certain rental rate where we could be on the first floor and have wheel chair accessibility and parking. The name (EYE Can See) is something that I thought of that people could remember, something that would be memorable, but positive,” he noted.

EYE Can See’s mission includes “Assessing and meeting each individual’s needs by providing on-site demos, delivery, set-up, training and continual support for all that use our products. Eye Can See is the authorized local dealer in Indiana, Kentucky and Metro Cincinnati for several of the best manufacturers of lowvision and blindness products.” Blackman described their work, “It’s basically demonstrating and showing products to people who know and need them and to optometrists who can share information to their patients. We work with different manufacturers of these products to get the word out that they are available and try to demonstrate them as often as we can to people and groups of individuals. We are the middle man between the manufacturer, the end user, the rehab center and the eye doctor. We can also supply people with local and discounted pricing. We can sell it for less than that because we work with them and we try to pass along discounts to people.” EYE Can See’s clients include various non-profit groups and local schools. “We work with Easter Seals, The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, Crossroads Rehabilitation and Bosma Enterprises. We work with people with macular degeneration. A retired schoolteacher recently bought a few items. We found some good refurbished equipment for him that would meet his budget,” Blackman said. Their variety of visual aids meets a range of various individuals’ specialized needs. “We go from simple low-tech, hand-held magnifiers up to desktop electronic reading and writing machines. We have scanners that scan text and read it to blind people. We also have computer software for blind and low vision users. We don’t sell ADL (adaptive daily living) items like cooking aids or large print playing cards. We refer people to Bosma Enterprises for those kind of things, like a talking wristwatch or a large-print clock and they refer people to us.” EYE Can See covers a wide-ranging sales area, as Blackman mentioned, “We’re a direct authorized dealer for Indiana and Kentucky. It’s kind of like a protected territory for us. An individual in Louisville helps us there, making it more effective for us than to go there. He has had low vision for about 10 years and uses some of the equipment that he sells. Prior to that, he was in newspaper advertising. We sell products really all over the state of Indiana and to Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation and to private paying people. A career change brought Blackman’s son, Greg, into the business, which positively impacted their operations. “He was a salesperson and was looking for something where he could have more normal hours and something more in helping people. He had helped me before part-time and knew what we did. He

decided that this would be better for him. He’s been with us for about two years. He encouraged us to open up this demo center (in Broad Ripple). Prior to this, I worked out of my home. I had a person call me from Frankfort and was willing to visit here. We used to travel a lot more, so it’s really a much more effective way to use our time. We go out and do repairs for customers who have brought equipment from us,” he said. Blackman mentioned the rewards of their work: “Helping people find a solution, whether it be low- or high-tech and helping them find a solution that they didn’t know existed, like helping them read and write, use a computer or watch television. Usually, when people get a reading and writing machine from us, if it breaks, they’ll call us. They depend on these products so much because they live alone and don’t have anybody to see for them. They use these products a lot. WARMFest (White River Arts & Music Festival) Labor Day Weekend, Sat-Mon, Aug 31 – Sep 2 Broad Ripple Park (1550 Broad Ripple Ave) and surrounding area. All-ages (10 and under free with adult), $45 single day at gate, $100 all three days at gate, see website for presale), gates open at 10:00 am.

I am getting really excited for WARMfest; it will be a combination of all of the best things about music festivals, our community, and our neighborhood wrapped up into three fun days. WARMfest is managed by the Carl G. Fisher Society. CGFS’s vision is to restore and promote the White River to return it to the grandeur of a century ago. Each ticket purchased includes a donation to CGFS. I am thrilled that the festival will be held along the banks of the White River in Broad Ripple Park – and you can take a paddlewheel boat cruise during the festival and see the majestic river up close. Cruises are scheduled each day for an additional $5 and there are three livemusic cruises (G.Love, Todd Park Mohr – of Big Head Todd & The Monsters, Woodstove Flapjacks) with varied ticket prices for each show. You do need to have a festival ticket for the boat rides and there are only 50 tickets available for each cruise. I strongly suggest purchasing tickets ahead of time. The music will be spread over four stages and a dance tent surrounding the Indie Arts and Vintage Marketplace. Food and beverages are sprinkled throughout the park. I won’t even try to try to tell you about all of the 40 musical acts that will be playing over the three days. Just know that it is a lovely mix of local talent and national musicians and you can’t go wrong no matter who you see. Check out the website for a full listing of bands. Here are some tips for attending WARMfest and music festivals in general. Bring cash. I’m sure there will be ATMs in the festival grounds, but I’d rather be enjoying the music than being at the ATM. Bring your ID. You’ll need to buy beer. Make sure your phone is charged. You’ll be snapping photos, tweeting, and such. Bring a good attitude. Part of the fun of a festival is being part of the crowd. Have a meeting place. If you’re going with a group have a place where you can meet up at an appointed time. It is no fun to spend your time trying to find each

other. Wander. Make sure that you have time to check everything out. The band you’ve never heard of might just turn out to be your new favorite group. Things you can bring to WARMfest: blankets, baby Strollers, non-professional camera equipment – the rule is that if it has a detachable lens you can’t bring it in – you can bring your point-and-shoot camera and use your cell phone camera, a small folding lawn chair, and the coolest thing I’ve seen at a festival, they are letting you bring in a small EMPTY six-pack sized cooler (approx 9″ x 9″ x 11″ or smaller). You can enjoy the music and entertainment and limit your trips to the concession area by stashing your food in the cooler. And they will provide ice free of charge. I can’t tell you how that makes my little food-safety minded heart sing. Things you cannot bring to the festival: outside food or drinks (including alcohol, bottled water), any type of backpacks, weapons of any kind, including fireworks, binoculars, illegal or illicit substances of any kind, glass containers and metal aerosol cans (including sunscreen in aerosol cans), empty CamelBak or water bottles or other empty plastic containers, umbrellas of any kind, skateboards, scooters, carts, wagons, tents, pets (except for service dogs, of course), or professional recording equipment. I am really looking forward to WARMfest – I’ll see you there.

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. Tarkington Tower Unveils New Art Galleries

As part of a major renovation to the 45-year old historic Tarkington Tower building, -‘gateway’ to the Indianapolis Historic District on Meridian and 40th Streets, Tarkington Tower will hold an art exhibition and reception on Friday, September 20, 2013, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. in its new lobby and terrace room galleries. Major works of art, including Rembrandt, Monet and Dali will be displayed along with many other works by prominent artists. The collection is on loan from a resident of Tarkington Tower. The Tarkington Tower galleries will provide a new and unique venue and exposure for all types of artists throughout the area. This “inaugural” art exhibition is the first in an ongoing series. It is hoped that a new exhibit will begin on the third Friday of each month, and will feature one or two artists each time. “We are very excited by our new venue and hope to provide new, experienced artists and students alike with a place to exhibit a mixture of artistic mediums. We are especially looking forward to exhibiting the works of local student artists, as well,” said Jim Grim, President of the Tarkington Tower Condominium Association. The exhibit on Friday, September 20, 2013, is open to the public from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served. Nominations Open for BRVA Board

Nominations are now being accepted for elected positions on the Board of Directors for the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA). Those interested can download a Director Candidate Application Form. The form has all of the details for the nomination and election process. Nominations will be accepted until October 5. The election will take place on October 15 during the Annual Fall Meeting of BRVA. Three-year terms of office will begin on January 1, 2014 and end on December 31, 2016. Letters From Readers Just to let you know that our youngest son, Jim Cullen, is getting married to an Indianapolis girl, Lydia Campbell Maher, Saturday, 1st June, in Indianapolis. Jim has only moved to Indianapolis in April having been engaged to Lydia since summer 2012 and working on securing his visa for the last year. They will be married in Lydia's parents house in Norwaldo Avenue and we'll watch it on Skype and pop the champagne together. We live in Cork, Ireland and Lydia and Jim met here in April 2011 and fell in love at more or less their first meeting. Lydia is an Ethnomusicologist, specialising in Sean-Nos (old-style) singing. She had originally come to Cork to pursue a semester of studies in Irish music and culture in 2008 and returned in 2010 to earn her M.A. From the moment they met it was very obvious for all to see that this was a very special relationship. Jim had been working for himself in print and design for some years and had moved into the recruitment business and was really building a good career but the heart dictated that his future career would be in America with the lovely Lydia. Naturally we were very concerned at the idea of our son going to America and I think Lydia's parents were equally concerned at their daughter picking up more in Cork than her M.A. The loving couple headed for Indianapolis near the end of 2011 to meet the parents, Jim and Mary Maher, who live just south of Broad Ripple in Norwaldo Ave. Apparently they got on really well with Jim even cooking a shepherds pie dinner for thirteen of the family in a log cabin in the woods where they stayed for a few days. Jim and Mary and her sister and brother then visited Cork in the summer of 2012 where we all met up for dinner and drinks and got on great and put our hearts completely at ease as we saw what a lovely family they are. Lydia had to go back home last November as her visa had expired and she was a little homesick. Jim moved back in with us while he prepared to follow and Skype helped keep their relationship blossoming. A difficult time for them but it showed how strong their relationship is that it could survive. They are both now living on Hillside Avenue and Jim has to wait for 3 months before starting work due to visa restrictions but he's planning to do some voluntary work in the meantime. He's passionate about Manchester United Football Club (soccer) so he's hoping he might be able to do some soccer coaching to children or/and do some Irish Language teaching in the Irish Arts Academy of Indianapolis where Lydia is teaching some classes. Anyway, whatever they end up doing we know they'll be very successful and will contribute to Indianapolis in a very positive way. Myself and Assumpta are naturally missing Jim but are delighted that he's marrying into such a wonderful family and are looking forward to our new and future relationship with Indianapolis. Alan, as we are going to have a relationship with Indianapolis and more particularly the Broad Ripple area, feel free to contact us at any time if you ever feel it would be of interest to you or your readers to hear what's happening in Ireland or get a flavour of what it's like to live here. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. For years I've stumbled in the large section of concrete in disrepair on North Cornell Avenue. Several children have skinned their knees and some elderly folks have fallen there. Complaints to the city were more or less ignored and those to the establishment in which the hole was in front of were helpless as the city had tied their hands. Well, last month, in the dark of the night, Santa, set up a meeting with the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy and together they contacted the "Concrete Gremlins"......the rest is history!! Have a safe walk.

As the 1971 Sly and the Family Stone hit said "It's a family affair". This ad for Schiff's Shoes appeared in 1960. They even sold ice skates! Schiff's was at 836 Broad Ripple Avenue, where Chumley's Grill is today [H4 on map]. August BRVA land use meeting held at park By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The August public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee was held on August 27, at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center at 6pm. There were three petitions on the agenda. 5915-5925 College Avenue - Petition 2013-CZN-821 and 2013-CVR-821. This was the second time this matter has been presented to the committee. Previously it was for information only. It is back on the agenda now that the petition has been filed and a hearing is set for September 12 with the Metropolitan Development Commission. It was announced that the petitioner will file for a 30 day continuance which will move that hearing to October. This will give time for further development of the building plans. The proposed project is to raze the two homes at the above addresses and build a 2 1/2 story commercial building. This is just to the north of the Fox Glass building at Kessler and College. There were remonstrators in the audience tonight that expressed very strong objections to this project. They was stated that if this residential tear-down and commercial construction is allowed, then it will not be possible to stop further tear-down and building along the rest of College Avenue. They further stated that the residential feel of this neighborhood is critical to the charm of Broad Ripple and the stabilization of property values. The petitioners countered that this proposal is unique, in that the new commercial building (and the Fox Glass building) will only occupy a similar portion of the block going north of the corner, matching the west side of College. On the northwest corner of College is Binkley's, Ubër, and Fine Estate Rugs. This mimicking of the commercial development on opposite side of the street could mean that further development in the middle of the block could have convincing arguments for being denied. Remonstrators said that the BRVA Envision Broad Ripple plan calls for stopping all residential razing. The BRVA said that actually the plan calls for College to be a transit corridor with a concentration of commercial development at the nodes (such as Kessler and College, Broad Ripple Avenue and College, etc.). The issue was tabled until the September meeting when the completed plans will be presented for this project. 618 E. 60th St - Petition 2013-HOV-034. This is a variance request for a twostory addition with a garage. The variance is needed because the property will only have 56.25% open space after the construction and the law states that the property must have at least 65% open space. The city staff said that this property should be allowed this variance because it is a small lot in the area and it would be a hardship for the property to meet the general open space requirement. The BRVA committee vote to support this petition. 911 Main Street - no petition yet filed. This project was presented for information only, to get feedback from the committee. It is a proposal to build a one-story addition for a conference room and a deck that includes ADA ramps to the building that was previously Fur Bee at Main and Cornell Streets. The variance requested would be for zero on-site parking spots, where four are required. Considering the location of the property, the small number of parking spots needed and the availability of parking on Main Street, the committee was in favor for future support for it. Liquor licenses have been requested by Taverna (beer, wine, liquor) at 1859 Broad Ripple Avenue (previously Khoury's) and Hotel Broad Ripple (beer, wine) in the 6500 block of Westfield Boulevard. Both signed the BRVA agreement. The next public meeting of the Land Use and Development committee is scheduled for September 24, at 6pm in the Broad Ripple Park Family Center.

Coops” will be held Sunday, September 22nd between 1pm and 5pm throughout Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington and Rocky Ripple neighborhoods. There will be 12 "show coops" on display and a couple of Project Poultry schools with coops. This is an "open-house" style event and can be explored at your leisure. Tour de Coops is bicyclefriendly and encouraged! Pedal & Park will be providing bicycle racks for your safety. Of course, cars are also welcome on the tour. The trail has been extended north into Westfield by 3-4 miles and makes a nice (albeit long) ride from the Ripple. You can stop at the new coffee place and microbrewery bar just south of Main Street in Carmel for a break as well. Warm Fest Honors Miami Beach And Speedway Founder Did you know? The upcoming WARMFest benefits the Carl G. Fisher Society. The benefits will be for Broad Ripple and White River. Carl Fisher was a very interesting man. Not only did he plan and design the Speedway but he also planned and built Miami Beach. Holliday Park Happenings We have a lot of fun events in September at Holliday Park including: • September 1: Family Nature Club, 1:30pm • September 7: Beekeeping, 1:30pm to 3:30 p.m. • September 7 and 21: Work days in the garden • September 8: Girl Scouts Sunday, 1:30p.m. • September 13: Natural History Book Club, 10 a.m. • September 13: Labor and Learn/Dig and discuss (volunteer gardening and a lecture by horticulturist Christ Turner. Native Plant Home Tour The Indiana Native Plant Society will have a garden tour on September 22. This will be a home tour on how local gardeners use native plants in their garden. Details at www. inpaws.org. Pool Closed August 4 Due To Budget, Not School Schedules I couldn't figure out why our city pools close August 4. Indy Parks claimed the life guards were high school students. As pointed out by Amos Brown in The Recorder, the life guards were not high school students and they did not go back to school August 6. (They are mostly college students.) In any event, students don't work weekends, so could the pools stay open on weekends in August? Long story short: the real reason they close the pools early is to save money (this is what an Indy Parks insider admitted to me). As I have asked before, why can't the pools stay open until Labor Day like Jordan Y and the Monon Center outdoor pools do? Sometimes Indy can be frustrating. We skimp on basic services (pools, police, libraries, and transit) but have money to handout to for-profit sports teams and cricket fields. Let's get the basic services right first. Penrod features Friday night event This year there is an event on Friday, September 6, before the Penrod Art Fair on Saturday, September 7, at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. The evening will feature food and drinks as well as musician Todd Snider. Also, there will be previews of approximately 150 artists' works in advance of the Saturday fair. Whole Food to Anchor Planned Development Does the story sound familiar? Whole Foods has announced plans to open a supermarket in a mixed-use retail and residential development. Whole Foods will occupy the ground floor while the five story building will include 200 apartments on the top. Actually, this story is from The St. Paul (MN) Villager about the proposed Whole Foods in St. Paul. The building replaces a bank and several homes. A new era for genealogy research will open Saturday, Sept. 7 when the Genealogical Society of Marion County (GSMC) opens a new headquarters library building. All genealogists and family historians are invited to attend the grand opening program at 11 am. It is in Memorial Park Cemetery at 9350 East Washington St., just a mile east of Post Road. For about 70 years the building was the office for Memorial Park and has been remodeled for GSMC through the cooperation and support of Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers which owns 16 event and funeral facilities throughout Central Indiana and has seven cemeteries and the first crematorium. GSMC is open to all genealogists. It began in 1996 when Ron Darrah and others formed the group with 15 members. It formerly had a library in the Waiting Station at Crown Hill Cemetery. Genealogy and family history are among the largest hobbies and professions as millions of people trace their families’ history. They record not only births, deaths, marriages, but also information about their lives which is a heritage for individuals. Mike Method, current GSMC president, said that he expects this new location will be a valuable asset for genealogists throughout Marion and surrounding counties. It provides the space and flexibility to expand all of our offerings and to provide more services to the genealogical community He said there is an explosion of interest in genealogy that began when Alex Haley traced his family lines in the 1970s and the blockbuster television series “Roots” became a sensation. It was especially difficult, Method said, because Haley had to follow a difficult journey through slavery and his African heritage. Today, Method said, thanks to the Internet, a wealth of information is now online and is helping people connect easier with their families past. At the same time, the importance of print publications, microfilm sources and education are as great as ever. GSMC has free regular monthly meetings that discuss fundamental genealogical research topics as well as sometimes hidden resources. The library specializes in Marion County records from schools, cemeteries, organizations. It has several record preservation projects underway, accomplished by volunteer members. GSMC is a member of the Indiana Genealogical Society and the Federation of Genealogical Societies and is now an affiliate library for FamilySearch, one of the world's largest and

Jill Came From the Fair... What happened to August? I seemed to have spent a good part of it at the Indiana State Fair. I had the pleasure of doing cooking demos for Red Gold Tomatoes inside of the lovely Dupont Food Pavilion. I biked the Monon each day. Been awhile since I have done that, so my observations of everything old was new again. Admired the murals along the wall between 52nd and 49th streets. Wondered where those artists are today. I believe most if not all were BRHS students at the time. Glad to see the murals of Major Taylor and Pat Mack's inspiring "Angel Hug" sculpture still in place. The CIBA folks ran the Pedal and Park. What a deal. Park for free AND enjoy delightful conversation with this group of interesting and cheerful folks. Because my mind was able to "breathe" from the 20 minute ride from my laptop to the fair I was able to really LISTEN and converse. So, dates and items spurred a conversation about royalty which turned into a conversation about ancestry.com which turned into learning that it is a small world. We all knew several of the same people. And maybe were even very distantly related! People at the fair intrigue me. Each morning I would walk across the midway and the vendors and hawkers were ready. Big stuffed animals, blow up animals, giant balls all ready for winning. The rides were still waiting for the kids. The Fun Slide was my favorite. The irony of the name and the glee of the kids going down it. As opposed to the many mechanical, whirly, shaking, rides. I did see the World's Largest Popcorn Ball. I thought it would be bigger. Demos were well attended and I delighted in sharing all of the crazy Indiana food knowledge and nutrition knowledge and anti-aging facts I have gathered over the years. And put me on a stage with a knife–careful. ha. The Indiana Wine Grape Council also had a booth in the Dupont Building. The group was championing its "Indiana's Own" grape, Traminette. Kudos to Easley Winery for taking top honors with its version of Traminette at the Indy International Wine Competition held at Purdue the week before the State Fair. The Indiana Microbrewers Guild had an education exhibit as well. Did you know there are now 70 microbreweries in the state? And while you could learn about the grapes and hops you couldn't taste them. So in closing I will recommend that you DO give Easley Traminette a try. It is available at the winery and selected grocery stores in town. The grape makes an off dry white wine with aromas and flavors of white peach, apricot and a hint of cardamom spice. It would be delicious with any of the Red Gold recipes I made at the fair. The crowd favorites were the Chicken Gyros with Cucumber Tomato Salsa and the Sassy Guacamole. Christian Theological Seminary Hosts Alumni Reunion

Christian Theological Seminary (CTS) will host an alumni reunion on Wednesday, September 25, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at its Indianapolis campus, 1000 W. 42nd Street. CTS alumni will learn about new initiatives and programs underway, including the Center for Pastoral Excellence and The Discipleship Project. A reception will honor CTS’s first female faculty member, Dr. Sue Cardwell. Dr. Cardwell celebrated her 95th birthday this year. Central Indiana Bicycling Association & Pedal and Park

The Indiana State Fair is over for 2013. At Pedal & Park the Central Indiana Bicycling Association parked a record breaking total of 2149 bicycles at the Boulevard Station along the Monon Trail, all for free. Over the 17 days of the fair CIBA members volunteered 1,013 hours Pedal and Park. The next Central Indiana Bicycling Association Pedal and Park event will be Penrod at the Indianapolis Museum of Art on September 7. Additionally CIBA members provide free Pedal and Park for visitors to the Broad Ripple Art Fair in May.

I get up in the morning and I go to work. I have a day off and I work in the yard. It rains and I work in the house. At night I work at my computer. Sometime it seems like I just work, work, work. This probably makes me just like most of the rest of you. WORK is a four letter word that rules my life, so this year I am going to celebrate Labor Day. Labor Day is the federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September. We get to have a day to celebrate workers. That’s me and probably you. So let’s know how it all began back in 1882. Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday while he was secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York. The first Labor Day celebration was in New York City, September 5, 1882. Oregon was the first state to officially adopt the holiday, and 30 other states then followed. It was not until 1894, after the deaths of workers during the Pullman Strike, that the U.S. Congress voted to make Labor Day a federal holiday. President Grover Cleveland signed the bill. Although early years found towns and cities celebrating this day with businesses closed, parades, picnics, political and labor speeches, the holiday has long meant the end of summer to me. It used to be that school never began until after Labor Day. We stopped wearing white after Labor Day. Summer was over. The approach of Labor Day also signaled a trip to Stout’s Shoes to get a new pair of saddles or penny loafers. This annual trip brought occasion to see Stout’s parrot and the baskets that carried payment and purchases to be wrapped to the office via wires just below the ceiling. Whoosh, as quickly as the salesman pulled the cord, the transaction was underway. My new, stiff, uncomfortable school shoes were yet another reminder that summer barefoot days were over. Labor Day today is often a work day. This being a big retail weekend, many shopkeepers and salespeople work, as do restaurant, gas station, and hospital employees, police and firemen. Homemakers don’t get a day off, nor moms and dads. Planning a work-free day in the 21st century may be next to impossible…not like the good old days when blue laws kept most businesses closed on Sundays. Oh, for bygone days and the simpler ways of life. If you have to work this Labor Day, I will take the day off for you. If you are a lucky reveler, thank a person around you for working so you can celebrate. I also take my hat off to all the workers of Broad Ripple. Thanks for making it a memorable, fun place to visit. Thank you business owners, thank you Broad Ripple Village Association, thank you landlords, thank you police and EMTs, thank you garbage collectors and DPW, thank you servers and cooks, thank you entertainers, thank you retailers. You are appreciated. From the U.S. Department of Labor website: “The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor

You Go Girls!! Several years ago, I heard mention of a group called “Girls On the Run” and remember that I was intrigued and happy at the thought of this idea. All I really learned about this organization at the time was that it was for younger (primarily elementary) girls and it involved running, and thought that it would be a great to get involved in some facet. Well, as it happens…life got in the way; moving business locations, adding employees, writing for the coolest publication around ;) and the idea subconsciously faded away. That is until recently! A few months ago, a good friend and regular class go-er, Karen Roberson, mentioned to me that her adorable daughter Amelia was in this group at her school St. Joan of Arc. So, I did a little investigating as to what exactly GOTR is all about. It basically spans a period of 10-12 weeks, and typically held after school. Their website explains their mission a lot better that I could: “ The program is designed to allow every girl to recognize her inner strength, the Girls on the Run curriculum inspires girls to define their lives on their own terms. Throughout the season, the girls make new friends, build their confidence and celebrate all that makes them unique. The Girls on the Run lessons encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Participants explore and discuss their own beliefs around experiences and challenges girls face at this age. They also develop important strategies and skills to help them navigate life experiences. Then, we look at the importance of team work and healthy relationships. And, finally, the girls explore how they can positively connect with and shape the world. Physical activity is woven into our program to inspire an appreciation of fitness and to build habits that lead to a lifetime of health. At the end of each three-month session, the girls participate in a Girls on the Run 5k event. This celebratory, non-competitive event is the culminating experience of the curriculum. Completing the 5k gives the girls a tangible understanding of the confidence that comes through accomplishment as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. Crossing the finish line is a defining moment when the girls realize that even the seemingly impossible IS possible.”

After reading this, I was determined to check it out and mentioned to Karen that I would like to attend a session. So, one day I walked over with her (all of one block from my home) and sat on the floor in a circle with about 12 young girls who I could tell were thinking “Who the heck is she?” but not in a bad way. The topic of that day was “community” and how to maintain a healthy relationship in the various communities. The girls were very insightful and I was impressed by their mature yet playful discussion. I then introduced myself and talked about how their group is a great example of a community in that they are all working together to accomplish a goal. You see females can often work against each other and this group was so inspiring as they had mutual respect for each other and were each others’ cheerleaders! Now to my FAVORITE part…I whispered to the teacher/group leader that I would like to warm them up before their training run, and they were so excited! I had a blast leading those little whipper snappers… jumps, lunges, mountain climbers, squats. It was quite amusing to see some of these young girls complain more than my older clients! At the end we had a group hug and high fives and I

walked home with a huge smile on my face.  If you have a young daughter, I would highly recommend looking into this program. It would be an experience they would never forget and will likely lead to a framework of positive habits and beliefs. Take it from Amelia Roberson herself (at the time in third grade), “Girls on the Run was an awesome experience! I joined together with a group of girls because I wanted to get great exercise. The activities were fun and motivated us to reach goals we set for ourselves. Everyone was always cheering for you and our coaches were so nice and fun. Most importantly we learned to believe in ourselves.” Hmmmm pretty sure I wasn’t this intuitive in third grade… I love this picture because it truly embodies the unique personalities of the girls!
