Construction all around the Village

You see it almost anywhere you go in Broad Ripple. There is so much, I didn't have room for every project here. Clockwise from upper left: Apartment expansion on the old McNamara property at 61st and Compton. Building Ambrosia and two other shops in the old Fox Glass building at Kessler and College. Building a new restaurant/office tower on the site of the old liquor store (and a long time ago the BR Jail) at Winthrop and BR Ave. An addition to the old Fur-Bee house at Main and Cornell. Piles of construction stuff for the Cornell resurfacing. And, the new home for Audio Solutions at Main and Ferguson.

alison@broadripplegazette.com Broad Ripple locals often encounter food trucks around their favorite stores, restaurants, and events, but very few have probably seen a mobile fashion store. Charmaine Sanders has set out to create one of the most unique shopping experiences in Broad Ripple with the launch of her completely mobile fashion truck, Blush Shoetique. Sanders first opened a store on Westfield called Blush Shoetique, but when her lease was up, she considered closing the store and instead going completely mobile. “I didn’t know if I wanted to sign another lease, so I decided to have a truck because I always eat at Blush Shoetique the food trucks downtown when I see them,” she said. “I usually drop off and deliver people stuff blush317.com if they want to see a pair of shoes or whatever, so that’s where the idea came from as far as delivering shoes on a truck.” The store officially closed on August 3, and the mobile fashion truck, Blush, was launched. The company now houses their merchandise in a suite until they are ready to go out for an event. Operating a truck instead of a store has its benefits, according to Sanders. “I can just put the money that I make back into my merchandise instead of paying rent. The only thing I pay is insurance and that’s not a lot at all,” she said. Besides saving on rent and utilities, the truck is an interesting way to spice up any

party or event. “It’s very convenient and will add a different and unique thing to a party. You don’t see a lot of food trucks or mobile fashion trucks at any event. It would just be different,” said Sanders. Naming the truck was an easy task for Sanders after seeing the reactions to her incredibly unique shoes in her store. “When people see funky shoes they tend to blush at them,” she explained. Sanders agrees that her most unique items are definitely her high heels because you can’t find those particular styles in many other stores. Shoes are not the only kind of apparel featured in the mobile fashion truck. All kinds of clothes and other accessories are included. “I have mainly clothes and a few high heels, and whatever’s in season. We go with the trend,” she said. This summer Sanders brought in studded denim shorts and handbags, popular summer items, for her customers. The clothes mostly follow the seasons and anything that happens to be in style. This fall and winter, Sanders plans to bring in different high and low top boot styles. Following trends can be a difficult task, but Sanders uses magazines to stay up-todate with the trends of New York and L.A. She works with a woman in New York to order her merchandise. “She’s been helping me for about three years now. I like her style,” Sanders explained. New merchandise for the store comes every Friday and sometimes on Wednesdays. The easiest way to see new merchandise on the truck is to follow the store’s Instagram, @blushshoetique, their most widely used social media tool. “It helps a lot because it’s free and it gets a lot of attention now. I can just upload pictures of what I have,” she said. Blush’s Instagram is currently followed by almost 4,000 people and includes close to 2,000 different posts, most of which picture new arrivals and unique store items. If a customer sees a product they would like to purchase online or on Instagram, they can buy the item through PayPal and it can be shipped to them within two days. Look for the Blush truck at many college campuses in September, where they are traveling for homecoming weekends. The campuses include: Indiana State University, Indiana University, Butler University, and Purdue University. The truck will be set up for the entirety of each campus’s homecoming weekend. To reserve the fashion truck for your event, use their website, blush317.com, or email blushshoes@gmail.com. The truck accepts cash and credit cards and even provides an indoor dressing room for people to try on their selections.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle

I owe everyone a big apology. I was looking at the wrong week on the calendar and thought that Jazz Fest was a week later than it actually was. I hope you all attended some of the shows and had a wonderful time. Here are some events that I am telling you about at the proper time:

Art vs. Art featuring Mike Wiltrout and the Modes of Death September 27 Vogue Theater 6259 N. College Ave $12 advance/$15 night of show, 21+, 8:00 PM

Are you a fan of art, chain saws, fire-breathing emcees, decibel meters, witty banter, audience participation, deciding fate by the spin of the wheel, and general bedlam? I can’t be the only one… Art vs. Art is a boisterous and fun art show with a twist. And the twist is worth $4,000 for the winning artist. Earlier this month artists gathered at Garfield Park and were given a canvas and paints and just a few hours to create a masterpiece. The paintings are all online (artvsart.com) to be voted on – now is your chance to be an art critic in the privacy of your own home. The top 32 vote getters will be on display at the Vogue. Balloting that night will determine the top 16. The other 16 will be offered for sale for $100. The rest will be for sale for $50. It’s not as confusing as I just made it out to be – the bottom line is that before the show even starts you can out of the Vogue with a great piece of original art for $50 or $100 – the artists get 70%. The top 16 paintings are randomly paired on stage and voted on by audience cheering – the decibel meter has the final say. The winner moves on to the next round. The loser is subjected to the Wheel of Death. A spin determines the fate of the canvas – past year’s methods have included chain sawing, pizza making and fates that I cannot type without blushing. You can spare the art by buying the painting from your perch in the audience; the price going up with each round (Round 1: $150, Round 2: $250, Round 3: $350, Round 4: $450). The Grand Prize is $4000, a title belt and a whole lot of bragging rights. I know it sounds a little confusing but it really is a fun night. Seeing Mike Wiltrout in action is worth the price of admission.

Nathan Angelo with Micah Dalton Tuesday, October 1 Birdy’s Bar and Grill 2131 E. 71st Street 21+, $10 advance/$12 day of show,

Nathan Angelo is touring in support of his new album, Out of the Blue. His intention was to channel the vibe of the sounds of Marvin Gaye, Jackson 5, Stevie Wonder and Otis Redding. He did it admirably, recording on two-inch tape reminiscent of how recordings were done in the heyday of the 60’s and 70’s era bands. The record incorporates the signature “call and response” singing style common

to Motown as well as the distinct orchestration: horn sections, strings, guitars, snaps, claps, tambourine and the unforgettable keys. Nathan’s live shows garner rave reviews and have created a loyal fan base across the country. Expect original danceable music and a whole bunch of fun. Micah Dalton has been described as sounding like a clever Ben Harper and musically reminiscent of Prince. How can you go wrong with that?

Come Here Architekt: Jan Ruhtenberg Opening reception: October 4, 6-11 PM Show: October 4 – November 16 Indianapolis Museum of Contemporary Art Murphy Building, 1043 Virginia Avenue, Suite 5 all ages, free

I’ll admit to being an architecture neophyte. Like with most things I know what appeals to me and what makes me turn my nose up, even if I can’t put a name to it. Through his grandson, Vess von Ruhtenberg, I’ve become fascinated by the work and mystery of architect Jan Ruhtenberg. Jan Ruhtenberg‘s accomplishments are astonishing: an apprentice and colleague of Mies van der Rohe during his most significant projects; a close confidant of Philip Johnson who helped introduce modernism to America; a man who escaped Nazi Germany to design projects for Herman Miller, Greta Garbo, Nelson Rockefeller and the Swedish Royal Family. However, as Jan approached the pinnacle of his profession, he was outed as a gay man in conservative 1950's America. Jan's commissions disappeared and he all but vanished from the history of modern architecture. This exhibition, curated by Vess von Ruhtenberg and Jeremy Efroymson, begins the process of reintroducing the world to one of its great architects and designers.

Bursting The Pigeon Hole It is easy to become painted into a corner and toil there ad infinitum. The corner may be familiar and comforting, but so is clinical depression. The poem below advocates busting the pigeon hole through awareness of our innate human versatility.

Anti-Pigeon Hole Mantra In a deep still place I heard "You are more than just one thing." I resisted and resisted then realized— I am more than just one thing. I am more than a finite being. My heart it longs to sing. Sometimes what I knew becomes occluded and my perception of freedom becomes deluded then I re-realize what I knew which is true through and through that all sentient beings are more than just one thing C.W. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Broad Ripple Photographer Publishes Book on the Village

Book Signing on Gallery Night, Oct. 11, 2013 A book that features photographs of Indianapolis’s best-known neighborhood is set for release next month. Broad Ripple, U.S.A., The Quiet Side of the Village is the work of local photographer Bruce W. Buchanan. The book will debut at a signing party during the Fall Gallery Tour in Broad Ripple on October 11 from 5:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Flanner and Buchanan, 1305 Broad Ripple Ave. The forty-two carefully selected photographs in the book show moments Bruce captured during his walks through Broad Ripple over a three year period. The photographer chose subjects he calls “everyday beauty.” He also designed and published the book himself. The Monon Trail is one of the book’s favorite subjects. He even photographed one stretch of the Trail in both summer and winter. Other subjects include a restaurant, a church, a classic car by the Post Office, and of course Broad Ripple’s iconic symbol, the duck. “Bruce does an amazing job of spotlighting both Broad Ripple’s iconic places and hidden spaces,” said Brooke Klejnot, Broad Ripple Village Association Executive Director. “We think it will evoke nostalgia for readers and an eagerness to dig deeper into the Village to find more obscure locations and new places to love. There is so much to discover in Broad Ripple. The book will be a great addition to any Broad Ripple enthusiast’s library and a wonderful gift for anyone just learning about our unique little Village.” “I’ve been around Broad Ripple my entire life,” said photographer, Buchanan. “I’m drawn to it because it has such an authentic feel; it’s part early Indiana, part urban chic, part funky, part small town America.” His family has a condo there where he spends part of the year. Bruce is also busy

photographing other neighborhoods around Indianapolis, possibly for another book. Bruce studied photojournalism at Indiana University and worked as a photographer and a picture editor for three daily newspapers almost thirty years ago. Today, he photographs regularly, what he calls his “daily visual diary.” His professional life is now centered on Flanner and Buchanan and the Buchanan Group of companies. When he isn’t traveling, greeting guests at one of his company’s events, or in a meeting, he likes to stop the car, take a walk and capture a few moments. How to purchase the book, plus samples of his poster series entitled “Celebrating Indianapolis,” can be found at www.BuchananPhotoCelebrations.com.

National Walk to School Day is Oct. 9

Within the span of one generation, the percentage of children walking or bicycling to school has dropped precipitously, from approximately 50% in 1969 to just 13% in 2009. Health leaders and community partners around the state are working to change that. The Indiana Safe Routes to School Partnership and Health by Design are encouraging schools and parents throughout the state to help students walk or bike to school on National Walk to School Day, Oct. 9. Despite evidence that walking and biking provides physical benefits, as well as reduces neighborhood traffic congestion, household costs and auto emissions, the vast majority of students arrive at school in a vehicle. Several schools in Indiana actively promote walking and biking, and parents who are involved with those efforts are eager to share the benefits. Kathy Busto rides bikes with her two sons to CFI at School 84 before heading to her office. Tips on how to organize a Walk to School Day event at a school or in a neighborhood are available at www.walkbiketoschool.org. The Indiana Safe Routes to School Partnership works to increase the number of children safely walking and biking to school throughout the state by sharing information, resources, technical assistance, and ideas. It is a collaborative effort spearheaded by Health by Design and comprised of government, community, health and education organizations. For more information, visit www. healthbydesignonline.org.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the right section of the middle row which contains 1-6-8-9. The 5 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 9-1. The 5 in the center section eliminates the three spaces in the row between the 9-1 and the 8-6. The only place left is the between the 8-6. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Graffiti hits the Ripple During the last month, graffiti tagging has exploded in the Ripple. On September 16, workers from Indy Parks were cleaning up the vandalism from the previous night on the Monon Trail pedestrian bridge near the dam. “We got hit really hard last night on the bridge and nearby rocks,” a worker told me. He noted they only clean up graffiti on city property and private property including IPL must be cleaned up by the property owner. Rich Bees, Board member of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA), agrees graffiti has gotten worse in the Village. "There is a lot more graffiti," he told me in an interview. He said the BRVA is having Butler students out on September 21 to clean up the Village including graffiti removal. Kelli Bauman of the Monon Coffee Company also has noticed the increase in graffiti. "It looks worse. (The graffiti is) noticed a lot more," she said. Complaints about the graffiti or requests to have it cleaned up can be phoned in to the Mayor’s Action line (327-4MAC). Contractors, likes Jeff Clark (phone 728-7474), can be hired to remove graffiti from property as can others. Bil l

New $50 fine if on the Monon Trail after 9 p.m. Monon Trail users should be aware that it is illegal to be on the Monon Trail after 9 p.m. (until 5 a.m.) and you can receive a $50 fine. The trail re-opens at 5 a.m. This change was made last October. (All other Indy Parks are open dawn to dusk.) Note there are NO signs indicating this policy on the trail. A few signs incorrectly say “dawn to dusk” on the back of the Monon Trail signs and such signs are few and far between. The extended Monon Trail hours took effect last October. An Indy Park Ranger was out ticketing users at 9:11 p.m. the other night. An IMPD officer told me that the incorrect signage is no excuse as users need to be aware of the trail times. Thanks to Maureen Faul of IndyParks for the clarifications of the policy. Pink Moustaches on cars? Lyft Rides come to the Ripple Have you seen those pink moustaches on the front of cars? It means the driver is a LYFT driver and can take you to your destination or pick you up. The new ride service started in San Francisco and now serves Indianapolis including Broad Ripple. I talked to Brad on Broad Ripple Avenue whose Honda was available to provide the service. (see www.LYFT.com). You pay what you want for the ride-there are no meters nor fixed charges. Instead, they suggest a donation. Cuban food in the Ripple Have you been to Taste of Havana at 815 Broad Ripple Avenue? It features Cuban sandwiches like the roast pork/sweet ham/swiss cheese sandwich on Cuban bread. For dessert, Flan and Tres Leches Cakes are featured. Racy fall exhibition at the Art Center The new fall exhibition series opens September 27. Touchy Subjects features “Art, Sex and Humor: Selections from the Kinsey Institute”, The Makeout Project which is work from Jedediah Johnson, and Catcalls, work from Kyle Herrington. Admission is free. Visit www.indplsartcenter.org/exhibitions. The opening night reception is September 27 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Holliday Park Happenings Marvelous Monarchs will be at 1:30 pm on September 29 On October 7, the Indianapolis Hosta Society will meet at 6:30 p.m. Butler University Visiting Writer Series October 8 On October 8 at Clowes Hall, the author of The Book of 70, Alcia Ostriker, will speak at 7:30 pm. at Butler University as part of the visiting writer series. Taverna is open A new restaurant, Taverna, has opened at 1850 Broad Ripple Avenue. The dark wood interior looks great and the menu is eclectic. See the details at www.tavernafoodspirits. com or call Stuart Wilson, General Manager, at 987-2946. I stopped by opening night and the menu looked very tasty. (Note: this is not a burger joint.) MORE RIPPLINGS September 28 Family Fun Day at Oliver’s Woods Nature Preserve 11 a.m. (near Keystone at the Crossing). Free hot dog lunch. Butler Puts a Piece of the RCA Dome to Good Use

As part of a grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, the University has built a covered pavilion using fabric from the RCA Dome roof and recycled/re-purposed materials from other sources. In all, 80-85 percent of the structure is made of reused material. “It’s exciting to have completed a project with the amount of reused material that’s in it,” said Tim Carter, director of Butler’s Center for Urban Ecology (CUE), which oversees the campus farm. “This can serve as a demonstration for how simple structures don’t need to consume additional resources. Hopefully, this will be a model for others to emulate.” The pavilion will be used as a gathering spot for people coming to the campus farm, those using the intramural fields, as a distribution point to sell produce from the farm, and for educational classes. Among the recycled/reused items in the structure, located west of campus at the University’s athletic fields: The entire roof is architectural fabric salvaged by People for Urban Progress from the former RCA Dome, which was torn down in 2008. The eight steel columns supporting the pavilion were formerly chain link columns supporting a Butler University baseball backstop. The concrete used for the foundation contain 20 percent fly ash, a combustion waste product created typically from the burning of coal in power generation and steel production. Wood members used in the structure are reclaimed timber framing from a former building. The members were re-fabricated for the project. The floor will be reclaimed bricks from a prior construction project on Butler’s campus. Plans for the pavilion date back to 2011, when the Center for Urban Ecology was awarded a Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust grant to expand both the physical space and the educational programming associated with the campus farm. The Center for Urban Ecology, which runs the farm, exists to explore, steward, and enhance urban ecosystems with a vision of becoming a national leader in the study and practice of urban ecology. It was the desire of the CUE to build a pavilion for the farm that would not only serve the farm’s

day-to-day working needs but to have a shelter made up of reclaimed material, Carter said. Carter partnered with People for Urban Progress to develop the idea for the pavilion utilizing the RCA Dome material. Working with local architect Paul Puzzello, the roof design was based on the geometry of the vesica, a shape created by the intersection of two circles with the same diameter, seen in medieval art, architecture, and crop circles.

Open Streets Indy debuts Sept. 29

In Spanish-speaking countries, they’re known as Ciclovias. In most cities across America, they’re called Open Streets. Either way, they’re events that close city streets to vehicles so people can fill the streets to walk, bike, dance, socialize and play. Now Indianapolis is joining the fun. The inaugural Open Streets Indy is Sunday, Sept. 29, from noon to 5 p.m. on Westfield Boulevard between College Avenue and 53rd Street. The free family event features an afternoon of active fun where participants can enjoy themselves and explore their city from a new perspective. Activities along the 1.8 mile-route will include participatory fitness classes, group dances, chalk art, games, music, food trucks, and kids’ activities and contests. In addition, there are several activity hubs. The Rivera Club will host a one-mile fun run, tennis games, shuffleboard, pickleball, live music, and food and drink for purchase. Alice Carter Place Park at Westfield Boulevard and Meridian Street will feature free kids’ activities and prizes , including a bounce house. The Chase Bank parking lot at 56th and Illinois will feature bicycling activities with

Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor

Protein the Miracle Nutrient? Chances are you see it everyday (or you may be the offender). People proudly guzzling their protein shakes/bars in hopes that this act will make them build muscle. Erroneously, protein tends to play a starring role at mealtimes. Most people would be better off if they actually reduce the amount of protein they consume. The primary reason for this is that most Americans get more than enough protein each day, and may be getting too much of this nutrient from animal sources, like meat, poultry, and eggs, which can also be high in cholesterol. Although important in the diet, extra protein will not help you build more muscle or make you stronger. Contrary to what many believe, simply eating protein will not give you toned muscles...yep, you have to earn them! When you're consuming too much of it, you're probably taking in more calories and fat than your body needs, and you may be working against what you are trying to achieve. Of course protein is essential for the body because it aids in every critical function of the body. But the truth about protein is that many people don't need as much as they are taking in, and the excess is unnecessary for the body's tasks. As a general rule, between 10 percent and 15 percent of your total calories should come from protein. So, if you consume 2,000 calories per day, at least 200 should come from protein, or about 50 grams. You should try to eat around one gram of protein per one kilogram of body weight, or around 0.4 grams per pound. An easier way to figure this out in your head is to take your weight, divide it in half, and subtract 10. The total will be the number of grams of protein you should consume each day. So, for example if you weigh 120 pounds, you should eat about 50 grams of protein. The recommended daily amount is two or three (4-ounce) servings. For concentrated proteins like meat, a serving is the size of a deck of cards. But watch the fat content! Many animal proteins contain fat. So choose lean meats and lowfat dairy products to limit your fat intake. And don’t eliminate carbohydrates and fat — this imbalance can damage your health. Unless you have liver or kidney disease, getting too much protein will not likely hurt you... but it could lead to extra unneeded calories and it can take a big hit to your pocketbook as well! However, if you are pregnant or an athlete (especially in endurance sports) you will need about 50% more protein a day than sedentary people. Personally, I think the best way to get your nutrients is from food sources and not supplements. Plus, eating a lovely healthy meal is better than a shake any day! Great sources of protein include: Lean meats, low-fat dairy, beans, lean fish, quinoa, and lentils. Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Nuts to Them! I got up the other morning and went out to the back deck. The sun was shining, the trees were swaying with a gentle breeze, and the temperature was perfect. I looked around, and suddenly there it was, a rude day spoiler. I had left a birdseed jug on the patio table. The cap was gone. A hole the size of a saucer stared back at me. They got me again, those villains― and I was not thinking raccoons and opossums were the culprits this time. No, it was surely devilish squirrels that had ventured right up to the door to plunder my birdseed container. Love them or hate them, when I hear folks tell me they have no squirrels in their yard, I am jealous. I have focused on squirrels in my yard in past articles, the small, puny ones that eat anything in sight and nibble through any surface, and the fox squirrels that jump on my feeders or tunnel into a pumpkin to get to the tender, moist pumpkin seeds. These critters are in my yard to stay because the landscape is very heavily wooded. Our bird feeders are another irresistible attraction. Through the years I have had to come terms with the rascals. Nevertheless, I have to keep looking for redeeming qualities, and so I remind myself of factoids once again: • “Rodentia” is the squirrels’ biological order, and this order makes up 40% of all mammals today. • Squirrels can be classified as tree, ground, or flying squirrels. • It seems that squirrels multiply like rabbits. They can have two litters a season and have up to four offspring per litter. Yikes! • The first young of the year can also produce litters. No wonder we seem to be overrun. • Squirrels can live up to six years. • I don’t know anything they won’t eat. They love the nuts and berries from my trees and can’t get enough of my sunflowers and peanut feeder contents. • Squirrels can jump distances of 10 feet or greater. If your feeder is hung off a branch or near a tree, it is fair game. • Squirrels like to sharpen their teeth of tree branches and wires. They also will strip bark off trees to mine for sodium and sap. • An average adult squirrel will devour about a pound of food a week. See why they rob our feeders? • The squirrel’s brain is about the size of a walnut. So how is it they can keep outsmarting us? Squirrel stories can be on par with fish stories. They usually are humorous or disastrous. Everyone seems to have a lively encounter of these wily rodents. To control these critters, try any of the following: squirrel resistant feeders, baffles to thwart them, spicy pepper food, or as a last resort, safflower, a seed they usually won’t eat. There are ways to keep them at bay. If you are game with encouraging their antics, put out corn and sunflowers. There are feeders for specifically for squirrels: boxes they have to open, bunge cords they have to maneuver; teeter totters they sit on, and wood arms that swing them around. If you’re so inclined, you can create a squirrel playground. Just remember, they are wild animals from which you should keep your distance. Forget attempts to tame them. I hope my experience of having left a birdseed jug out in temptation’s way is a reminder to all to be on guard against squirrel thievery. Random Ripplings There is some new public art in the gardens at Hair @ 6310, 6310 College Avenue [E2 on map]. The garden now has ceramic flowers and wooden dragonflies made from common items. Artist Kay Fisher, long time resident of Cicero, Indiana, has found a new purpose for used china/dinnerware. Kay fashions these items into art for gardens, yards or interior walls. The ArtfullyDishedUp tent can be found at several local Indiana festivals this summer and will be at the covered bridge festival this fall.
