Nexus Academy of Indianapolis By Mario Morone

Nexus Academy of Indianapolis is an open enrollment, tuition-free, public high school located at 6101 N. Keystone Avenue, Suite 302. It is the city’s first specially “blended” high school that was designed by Godshall Kane Architects LLC, a Pennsylvania-based firm. A “blended curriculum” is part face-to-face instruction with licensed teachers in English, math and business courses with the other part being on-line virtual learning with science, social studies and elective courses. “Success Coaches” are based at the campus and guide students through the curriculum that includes a personalized learning plan. Guidance counselors assist Nexus Academy students with college and career choices. By serving as mentors, they can help Glendale Town Center students achieve their goals. 252-5919 Classroom space combines a “team” area www.NexusAcademySchool.com with casual seating where collaborative and individual work takes place. It also includes seminar-style classrooms where students meet with teachers in smaller groups. There are also hands-on science labs, art rooms and a café. Students can attend classes either Tuesday through Friday morning (8 a.m. to 12 Noon) or Monday through Thursday afternoon (12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.) sessions. This schedule allows them time during the school day for internships, dual enrollment in college classes or participation in sports or performing arts. Each student receives a laptop computer that enables them to work anywhere inside or outside the school.

Nexus Academy Principal Jamie Brady is a 17-year veteran educator in Indiana. “I believe educators have been given a great charge in ensuring that we are properly preparing our youth for a vastly expanding global society. Nexus Academy is driven to educate students individually via the use of real-time data, ensure they are on the correct success path, and fully integrate technology in day to day teaching and learning,” she explained. “I have watched education evolve over the past 17 years and I am amazed that some educators still believe that standing up in front of a classroom, writing on a chalk board, and lecturing to young children is impactful and beneficial. Nowhere in corporate America are there chalk boards and most meetings are interactive and anchored by some sort of use of technology. We are educating our future leaders and we better make sure they are prepared to compete in a global

society,” she emphasized. Mrs. Brady graduated from Broad Ripple High School, where she served on their student council in addition to playing varsity basketball and softball. She earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Indiana University’s Bloomington campus and her master’s degree in K-12 education at Indiana Wesleyan University. She also completed their Principal Licensure Program in Administration. During this time, she worked in the Indianapolis Public School system for eight years as a teacher before serving as Assistant Principal and later as Principal. She was also Principal of Lighthouse Academies Charter School prior to be being recommended by a colleague to Nexus Academy. Mrs. Brady is currently a doctoral candidate in Leadership and Administration at Walden University. "What I like best about Nexus Academy is that I know that the teachers will be there to help me with anything I need and provide support," said, Matt Johnson, who is a current student. Over 60 students were currently enrolled in grades 9 through 12 at Nexus Academy in early September. A maximum of 150 students can matriculate for the 201314 school year that began August 5th. West Street in downtown Indianapolis. Additional times are Friday, November 8 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday, November 9 from 7:30 to 4 p.m. at the same location. Nexus Academy currently celebrated their first year of operation. In the 2012–13 school year, schools opened in Cleveland, Columbus and Toledo, Ohio in addition to Grand Rapids and Lansing, Michigan. They were a finalist in the 2013 EdTech Digest “Cool Tool” Awards in the Product or Service Setting a Trend category. Nexus Academy schools are part of the Connections Education family, which is part of the global learning company Pearson, a publicly traded security on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol, PSO. Their Glendale/Broad Ripple area location is their newest school. Nexus Academy Principal Jamie Brady and her staff are helping students fulfill their potential in the 21st century.

Three iconic indie pop rock acts are touring together this fall: Fountains Of Wayne, Soul Asylum, and Evan Dando of The Lemonheads. Each brings a deep catalog of melodic, guitar-driven rock songs and pop hits. You’ll find yourself singing along when you didn’t even realize that you knew the words. Fountains Of Wayne have released five critically lauded LPs, beginning with their self-titled 1996 debut. Their third record earned them a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, as well as a pop breakthrough with the single "Stacy's Mom." Their most recent full-length release is Sky Full Of Holes. Minneapolis' Soul Asylum started out recording for legendary indie TwinTone in the mid-80s, but achieved multiplatinum major-label success in the 90s with their albums Grave Dancers Union and Let Your Dim Light Shine, which contained several hit singles. Evan Dando has been fronting The Lemonheads since he was a teenager in Boston in the mid-80s. After signing with Atlantic Records in the 90s, the band had a string of alternative and college radio hits, became MTV staples with their cover of "Mrs. Robinson", and Dando graced the covers of countless magazines. In the 2000s Dando released a solo album, Baby I'm Bored, and continued to release music and tour under the Lemonheads moniker with various band members including Indianapolis’ own Vess von Ruhtenberg and Devon Ashley.

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Film Censorship
1. The “Czar of Hollywood” through the ‘20s and ‘30s, this Hoosier is known for the production code that bears his name. 2. In 2009, the Welsh town of Aberystwyth finally lifted its 30-year ban of what film by an irreverent British comedy troupe, probably because the mayor actually appeared in the comedy? 3. The 2001 Ben Stiller comedy Zoolander was banned in this country because of the movie’s plot involving assassination of the country’s prime minister to preserve cheap garment labor. 4. Not surprisingly, this 2006 mockumentary has been banned in Kazakhstan.
Banned Children’s Books
1. Published in 1926 and the basis for animated Disney feature films in 1977 and 2011, this classic has been banned in the United States for talking animals considered an “insult to God” and in Turkey and the UK because the sidekick is offensive to Muslims. 2. Largely known for his children’s books, this author was the leading cartoonist for Playboy, and penned both the Dr. Hook hit “The Cover of the Rolling Stone” and Johnny Cash’s hit “A Boy Named Sue.” 3. The 1964 novel Harriet the Spy has been banned for being “a bad example for children.” It was also challenged for teaching “children to lie, spy, talk back, and curse.” Who wrote it? 4. These books are frequently banned for their toilet humor and irreverent attitude. The title character is a superhero devised by two 4th graders about their grouchy principal, Mr. Krupp.
The First Amendment
1. Uttered in the 1964 U.S. Supreme Court case of Jacobellis v. Ohio, which justice said, "I know it when I see it" to describe his threshold test for obscenity? 2. In 1978, this comedian’s most famous routine served as a U.S. Supreme Court case, FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, where the court ruled, among other things, that the act was "indecent but not obscene." 3. In the landmark 1919 Schenck v. United States case, which U.S. Supreme Court justice asserted that “…free speech would not protect a man in falsely shouting fire in a theatre and causing a panic”? 4. In 1971, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the New York Times Company over the United States in the "Pentagon Papers,” leaked by what U.S. military analyst employed by the RAND Corporation?
Recently Banned Books
1. Last year, the school district of Republic, Missouri, banned this 1969 novel by Indianapolis native Kurt Vonnegut, prompting the Vonnegut Memorial Library to send families in that district free copies. 2. In May 2013, this WWII-era book, first published in English in 1952, was the target of a Michigan mom who tried to get it banned due to its “pornographic tendencies.” 3. In 2012, a Tennessee school district banned Looking for Alaska by this local young adult author for offensive language and for being sexually explicit. 4. Just last week, Randolph County, N.C. is reconsidering a recent ban on this 1952 novel that focuses on black identity in the first half of the 20th century. The board chair rejected the book as a "hard read," and another member stated he couldn't "find any literary value" in it.
Challenged Music
1. In 1956, ABC radio made this Hoosier songwriter change the lyrics of this Frank Sinatra hit to "Some like the perfume in Spain". 2. Indiana Governor Matt Welsh tried to have this song by this group banned because of perceived obscene lyrics, which were largely unintelligible. The first verse actually says, “A fine little girl waits for me; / Me catch a ship across the sea. / I sail that ship all alone; / I never think I'll make it home.” 3. In 1970, the BBC pulled the Kink’s hit “Lola” until Ray Davies changed what one word in the lyrics? 4. Shortly after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Clear Channel Communications sent a memo to its more than 1,200 radio stations and flagged 165 “lyrically questionable” songs. This band, whose last album was Renegades in 2000, was the only artist who had all their songs flagged. The Broad Ripple Brewpub Quiz is held at the 65th and Cornell Avenue pub every Tuesday at 7pm. mario@broadripplegazette.com The Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s is Sunday, October 13 at Military Park in downtown Indianapolis. An opening ceremony begins at 1 p.m. and the Walk starts at 1:30 p.m. Registration begins at noon. The nation’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research is held annually in nearly 650 communities. In Indiana, 13 Walks are held in Anderson, Bloomington, Columbus, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Kokomo, Lafayette, Merrillville, Michigan City, Richmond, South Bend, Terre Haute and Warsaw. Leah Shattuck, Communications Director for the Alzheimer’s Association of Indiana, explained, “The Indianapolis Walk to End Alzheimer's is a wonderful opportunity for the community to unite in pursuit of a cure for Alzheimer's disease. Their story recently appeared in an Indianapolis Alzheimer’s Association’s press release. The Alzheimer’s Association is the world’s leading voluntary health organization in its care, support and research. Their mission to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease is supported by their annual Walk.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Announces Graffiti Free Indy Program
Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) announced today their new Graffiti Free Indy program; which will provide free abatement options for Indianapolis residents effected by vandalism. To assist the City of Indianapolis, Department of Code Enforcement with the new ordinance on graffiti control, KIB is providing free resources through a partnership with Valspar and Lowes Home Improvement, to neighbors and residents in a citywide program to combat vandalism. “Graffiti Free Indy is a way that we are able to support our partnership with the City to provide abatement opportunities alongside their new graffiti ordinance,” said Joseph Jarzen, community engagement coordinator with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful “It empowers neighbors and property owners to be proactive and remove graffiti which hinders quality of life issues in our community. The impacts of this program will benefit those locally but also the overall character of Indianapolis. It is good to have the support and interest from Valspar and Lowes in this abatement effort.” KIB will be kicking off this initiative with a distribution day, Monday, October 7 at the Lowes Home Improvement Store near Post Road. Those interested in receiving the free supplies, must first register online with KIB by visiting www.kibi.org/graffiti_free_indy. The Graffiti Free Indy initiative allows Indy residents to take graffiti removal into their own hands by either proactively abating the graffiti on their own, coordinating a group clean-up, or volunteering to assist on graffiti removal. Support from the Marion County Prosecutors Office and IMPD, and the Department of Public Safety’s Graffiti Efficiency Task Force who helped set up the program and advocate for this ordinance, assisted greatly with the creation of this abatement program. All That Jazz and A Little Bit of Wine Too.... Yes, it's October but I'm still savoring September. Specifically the 2013 Indy Jazz Fest? I had the pleasure of being in the company of two of the strong line up presented "all over town" September 12-21. The festival opened with New Orleans jazz icon Allen Toussaint. The Schrott Performing Arts Center is BRAND new on Butler Campus. Allen was one of the first musical artists to perform in the venue. And he did so with grace, class and JOY! It's a "large but small" kind of venue–only seats 400 but feels more intimate than that. Most of the seats are close to the stage with a slight, slow elevation that ends in a balcony, that I wouldn't really call a balcony compared to what they are like in large venues. You just feel very connected to the stage. And I thought that the performer must really feel in touch with the audience. Which could be good or bad. ha. Thursday night, it was great! Allen came out in a stunning silk suit that appropriately had every color of the chakra system on it. As the night went on, I kept thinking he was wearing the coat of many colors of jazz. And his music was bringing those chakra colors/meditations to life: as he was sharing the root, the soul, the heart, the throat and the EYE of jazz. And on his feet, practical white sox and sandals. Love that! He has a sweet humble smile that never ceased for the almost two hours he played. We were seated stage left in the 4th row so we had the perfect view of his amazing hands. Oh my–how they swirled and slid so easily over the keys. Each movement was certain and emotional caressing the keys with respect and joy. His first tunes reminded me of a mix of Bach and Boogie....then he played some songs that had Asian undertones...and his bass guitar player (Roland Guerin) stepped in with some jamming. And scatting. It made me think of an Asian Pink Panther theme. The drummer (Herman LeBeaux) used his hands to rim the symbols and snapped his fingers to keep the beat. The lead guitarist (Renard Poche) was incredible. He had a "tool box" and kept pulling out different instruments–wood winds, a trombone, a flute–and adding nuances to all of the songs.
Allen talked to the audience for a bit and shared his wonderful sense of humor. Remarking on how his writing royalties have helped in so many ways...especially when the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead used his work. "They all still play like they are hungry–and they are old! I like that!", he said about the Stones and their latest work. He played several songs from his "Bright Mississippi" Album–he loved calling it an "album" too–ha... –then got out a bag of "goodies" from the Accent Annex in New Orleans and tossed trinkets and t-shirts and beads to the audience. He was having a good ol' time. He sang one of the many songs he penned but were made platinum by others, "Southern Nights"...and tried to leave the stage but the crowd wanted more, so he came back out and sat at the piano and just blew us all away. His depth and knowledge of all styles of piano music, from chopsticks to Beethoven to blues to hot and cool jazz sizzled from the keys. Once again, I just sat mesmerized with a BIG smile on my face soaking in all of his unconditional jazz love he was so freely and gladly giving away. It was a night I will never forget. But the wine I had that night–not the same. Was a lackluster Chardonnay. I didn't catch the name as it was the "bar pour". I detected a few notes of banana and pineapple and a good dose of vanilla oak. But nothing to remember. The wine was better ( 2010 Jawbone Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealandnotes of green pepper, grassy, decent sipper) and the jazz was just as smart on Saturday night when I heard Diane Schuur at The Cabaret at the Columbia Club. The high ceilings, marble floors, chandeliers and a backdrop of Monument Circle made for an elegant, sophisticated setting. The Cabaret is tucked away on the third floor of the Club. This show was a sell-out and the crowd was seated comfortably at chic round club tables on the floor with a simple stage against the wall where the leaded glass windows frame the Monument and buildings surrounding it. Ms Schuur's performance was playful and done with an ease that made you did feel like you were at your talented Aunt Diane's house and she was playing the piano and singing just for you. We were her playmates for the night. Her band ( Pat Mallenger on saxophone, George Fludas on drums and Jake Vinsel on Bass) looked like they were underage but their youthful look did not show up in their performance. Each played with intensity and respect for Ms Schuur who was having a fabulous time, taking her voice to intense heights then following up with a whimsical run on the piano keys and breezy laugh with the crowd. Her copper colored hair was secured with a bejeweled barrette that matched her glasses. She had taught a Master Class to students at the Cabaret earlier that day, and our show was her second of the evening. Yet she played for an hour and gave it her all. www.indyjazzfest.net Jill A. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. There was a great turnout Saturday, September 28th, at The Bike Line in Broad Ripple for the 3rd annual Officer David S. Moore "Warriors On Wheels" ride. Mayor and Mrs. Greg Ballard were in attendance as was Public Safety Director, Troy Riggs, who by the way rode in the event. The ride this year was altered to honor fallen Officer Rod Bradway and Officer William Whitfield, the first African American Indianapolis Police Department officer killed in the line of duty November 27, 1922.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Savoring the Season This month air is crisp, colors are vibrant, and the days keep getting shorter. There will be frost on the pumpkin, a last rose of summer, and a harvest of green tomatoes. Autumn also holds a sequence of special full moons and the end of Daylight Savings Time with setting our clocks back one hour. All these occasions signal changing seasons. Two of my favorites this time of year are the full moons and harvest. So let me wax. In September we had the Harvest Moon and this month we have a Hunter Moon. These moons are in song and celebration. I bet you can hum “Shine on Shine on Harvest Moon.” The Feast of the Hunter Moon in Lafayette is known nationwide and pays homage to early pioneers and Hoosier lifestyle in the woodlands of Indiana. The full moon closest to the autumnal equinox is named the Harvest Moon. This year it was in September. For your edification, here are the dates and names of the remaining full moons in 2013.

As we gather in this year’s harvests, I want to share a project I completed this year. The Love Apple Project was based on an idea of Ross Ferris, backyard gardener and vendor at the Indianapolis Farmer’s market. He had the vision of tapping other people’s backyards to grow produce. Home-grown produce was his legacy. This inspired our garden group at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church to give out tomato plants early last May — more than 200 of them. All summer I heard reports about growing progress, including concerns for delayed ripening. Alas, the harvest began. Our church supports the food pantry at Fletcher Place on Prospect and State. To date we have delivered a much appreciated bounty of more than 200 pounds of gorgeous, home-grown, vine-ripened tomatoes of all varieties plus peaches, apples, and miscellaneous produce. This was a great harvest project. I didn’t have to plant, water, or pick. I just transported the tomatoes to Fletcher Place. We all enjoyed accomplishing the challenge and sharing. As you know, tomatoes were called Love Apples. We did put lots of love into this project and the folks loved enjoying the fresh produce. Soon the trees will be bare, wonderful seasonal produce will be gone, and the gray days of winter will be upon us. There’s a lot of news in the Ripple: Fall Creek trail extension off Monon Trail delayed until spring The Fall Creek Trail extension – which runs from Central Avenue west to the Monon Trail --is scheduled to be completed in the spring. The trail has gravel on it now but work appears to have halted. In any event, this will give bike riders another option in heading downtown. Relatedly, the new North Skiles Test Park to Fort Harrison State Park is scheduled to be completed this fall.
Marrott Park gets new path along College Avenue Have you driven, biked or walked up College near 75th Street lately? As you know, the sidewalk ends if you are on the east side of the street. Good news! A new multi-use path is under construction along Marrott Park. It will be about 10 feet wide and is scheduled for completion by mid-November. Menswear store expands, celebrates one year anniversary Need some new undies or some new gym clothes (and want to look sharp). The Tool Box is a men's (underwear and sporting goods) supply company. They are located at 853 65th Street (and on the web at toolboxindy.com). They recently doubled their size and have a great selection of men's underwear and workout clothes.
Sept zoning issues at BRVA LUD meeting By Alan Hague

There were three items on the agenda for the September public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development (LUD) Committee was held on Tuesday, September 24, at 6:00 P.M. at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center. About 25 were in attendance. 1) 5925 College Avenue - Petition #2013-CZN-821 / 2013-CVR-821 This is the proposal to raze the two homes north of the Fox Glass building at Kessler and College to build a 6000 sq. ft. commercial office building. The petitioners took all of the feedback they received from previous meetings and made changes to the design details of the project. At the time of the meeting the architect was still working on those modified plans. To give the LUD committee time to review those plans, the petitioners have requested a continuance to the November 14 hearing with the Metropolitan Development Commission (MDC) Hearing Examiner. The LUD committee would be able to review and vote on the case at the October 22 public meeting at Broad Ripple Park. 2) 1111 East 61st Street [JJ25 on map] - This item was presented by Buckingham Companies regarding changes to the plans for $15 million expansion, Monon Place Phase II. Buckingham explained the modified site plans for the apartment expansion taking place at 61st and Compton. A letter of recommendation from the BRVA was requested by Buckingham. The modified site plan includes moving the location of the west buildings 17 feet to the east to allow for the existing foliage along the Monon Trail to remain in place. Also, a planned connection to the Monon Trail has been removed from the plans so as not to destroy a mature tree on the property. There is an option to build a small commercial building on the northwest corner of the property in the future if a tenant is found. The previous plan was for a dentist office on that space, but those plans have changed. Buckingham also changed the roof pitch on the perimeter buildings to lessen the effect of the heights of those structures. The LUD committee agreed to send a letter to the MDC. 3) 6515 Carrollton Avenue, Petition #2013-UV2-021 - This petition is for an addition of approximately 400 sq. ft. addition to the proposed Cake Bake Shop (previously supported by the LUD committee) to be constructed on the alley behind Playful Soul and Mother Nature's Sun at 6516 Ferguson Street [C4 on map]. The LUD committee voted to support this petition. The next public LUD meeting is October 22 at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center at 6pm.

Slow Food Book Club meets at Brugge The Slow Food Indy group will meet at Brugge on November 13 for a book club discussion of A Place at the Table. Gettin’ Ripped in Ripple by Laura Minor
A Cure is in Sight Several years ago when I was renting space for personal training in the basement of a massage studio in Broad Ripple, a lovely couple named Mike and Margo Schmidt became clients. After several months, Mike asked me if my mother, who is a travel agent, could book him a flight to Boston and come back to Indianapolis the very same day. Well, as I can tend to be a bit nosey, I asked him why he was going just for the day. He replied that he was going to Massachusetts Eye Institute because he was in a research study for a vision disorder. He told me the name of the condition and kind of played it off like it was no big deal… so of course I went home and Googled it to see what it was all about. The condition he said was Retinitis Pigmentosa. As I searched this disease all over the internet an overwhelming feeling of sadness came over me as I realized that it can be a quite serious and debilitating condition. As stated on the medicine.net website: Retinitis pigmentosa is the most common of a group of hereditary progressive retinal degenerations or dystrophies. There is considerable variation and overlap among Mike, Margo, Molly and Makena Schmidt the various forms of retinitis pigmentosa. Common to all of them is progressive degeneration of the retina, specifically of the light receptors, known as the rods and cones. The rods of the retina are involved earlier in the course of the disease, and cone deterioration occurs later. In this progressive degeneration of the retina, the peripheral vision slowly constricts and central vision is usually retained until late in the disease. Since retinitis pigmentosa begins as rod degeneration, the patient first notices increasing difficulty in night vision, followed by difficulty seeing in the periphery. Slowly progressive constriction of the visual field leads to tunnel vision. A small area of central vision in both eyes usually persists for years. Generally night precedes tunnel vision by years or even decades. Total blindness eventually ensues in most cases. The age of appearance of legal blindness ranges from as early as childhood to as late as the 40s. So, what this is basically saying is that a person with RP will gradually over time lose his/her peripheral vision until most often they become blind. Imagine each of your eye balls as an enormous drinking straw. Over, time, the straw shrinks and shrinks until there is complete darkness. And sadly, although there is some very promising research for RP there is no cure at this time. However there are several fundraisers such as the annual VisionWalk (held nationally including Indianapolis) that raises money to find a cure. In 2011, Mike and Margo posted a video on YouTube about his specific story and it is very touching. He was diagnosed in 1994 and described his initial denial which turned to anger and depression. After he met Margo in 2000, and later getting married and having two daughters, he changed his perspective on his “affliction”. Here are a few quotes in his own words: “A lot of it is embarrassment. When you’re out in public and you trip over a chair of fall down a couple of steps. I’ve been asked to leave a restaurant before for being drunk when I hadn’t had anything to drink because I was bumping into stuff trying to get to the bathroom. So, it makes you clumsy and it’s just really frustrating. You’re slowly losing your vision and you don’t know when. And that’s the scary part…you don’t know when. You’re told you are going to go blind at some point in your life. Well, that’s hard to deal with. How do you plan? Should I start looking for a new job? When will I stop driving? What do I do? It’s difficult to deal with when you don’t have a timetable” “There’s an old cliché that say you gotta play the hand you’re dealt. When I was first dealt my hand, I looked at the one card, RP, and it was…a pretty bad card. And, for 15 years all I did was think about that card and what am I going to do and anger and all of the emotions. And as I have gotten older and hopefully a little bit wiser, I decided in poker you get five cards. I had one really bad card

I looked at the other cards: I’ve got a wife that loves and supports me more than I could ever thank her for, I’ve got two healthy beautiful little girls, I’ve got a family that does and offers to support me, and I’ve got a set of friends that would do anything for me. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world and I’m very fortunate.” My friends Mike and Margo are the Indy VisionWalk co-chairs and four years ago, I was fortunate enough to have them ask me to “warm up” the participants before they head out on the walk. I absolutely love doing it and it is such a great event! Although I make a fool of myself by coercing people into doing jumping jacks and squats while they are eating their pre-walk bagel….I look so forward to it each year. It is great to see how much support it receives and for such a great cause. And it is also touching to see the community of those with RP coming together as it is quite a rare disease. Young kids all the way up to the elderly were present. One mother said that it was her son’s favorite day of the year “even over Christmas”. Howling at the Moon by Susan Smith It’s that time of year again. Butler’s Homecoming and the Butler Bulldog Beauty Contest. It is Saturday, October 12th and if you are reading this fresh off the press you have time to make it, otherwise it will have come and gone before the next issue. This is Indianapolis’ opportunity for a fun, FREE Saturday morning that shouldn’t be missed. Bring the whole family. Experience the chill of an October morning as fall settles in. The contest will behold more than 100 Bulldogs that will have you laughing so hard you will be in tears. Every year it gets crazier and more imaginative as in the Marilyn Monroe look alike with a blonde wig and cleavage, or ET in a bicycle basket, or Little Bo Peep (a young girl) walking out her sheep (a Bulldog covered in cotton balls). Oh, just go see for yourself. The kids will love the bounce house and face painting. There are coffee and food trucks. It is a major production set up in the middle of the campus with dogs scheduled to waddle across the big skirted stage at 10:00 AM. On another note I read with interest Matthew Tully’s column in The Sunday Star, October 6th. The headline of the column was Risk-takers who saw potential have created a destination. He said “There’s something uniquely exciting about urban renewal, particularly the organic kind driven by local entrepreneurs with a dream, and there’s a great example of it in the midtown area of the city. I call it “The L” because that’s how it’s shaped. It’s an undefined area that starts loosely at 49th and College, goes north to 54th Street and then juts east a bit past the Monon Trail.” He’s talking about my turf and I proudly accept the term “risk-taker” for indeed I was when I opened my first City Dogs Grocery location at 661 E. 49th Street. The Broad Ripple Gazette featured a picture of the storefront in a recent issue. It announced with the picture the present business Agrarian, a new urban homesteading and supplies store. Andrew Brake is one of the owners and as he was about to open the new business he reached out via email to find sponsors for the 3rd Annual Nap Town Chickens Tour de Coop. The event took place on Sunday, September 22nd in Broad Ripple, Meridian-Kessler, Butler-Tarkington and Rocky Ripple neighborhoods. There was to be a dozen show coops on the tour with a bicycle-friendly route. Also scheduled was an ol' fashioned eggtossing contest after the tour at the parking lot across the street from Agrarian. I emailed Andrew back and welcomed him to my former location. I told him it had served me well until we outgrew it and moved north to the next intersection. I went on to say that “when we leased 661 E. 49th Street we were pioneers. The block was scary…it still is across the street. But then along came Paw Patch Place and Upland. Now it’s the “in” place to be with Recess and Sinking Ship. I like to think that I started it all. The building has quite a history these last seven years. The Paw Patch people can tell you. I had an alarm system from day one. It only cost $20 a month and was great peace of mind. I never had much of value but it did have a panic alarm for safety. When I first moved in there were a lot of panhandlers and weirdos bumming money and lots of drunks due to the liquor store. But that all cleaned up with neighboring businesses coming in. I was down there by myself and it was freaky. I wished him and his partners good luck with the new venture, told him to enjoy the track lighting I left behind and attached some photos. I then met him in person at the BR Farmer’s Market where he had a big coop set up. So from those words in my email you can see that I was a risk-taker at 49th Street. It pleases me so to see that our little “SOBRO” has caught on and gets the attention of newspaper columnists. I have emailed M. Tully at times. He lives in our midst. I appeal to him to help bring focus to that blighted NW corner. It needs to be more than a place to have an ol' fashioned egg-tossing contest. Tully got on a roll lately in one of his columns about the Shell station redevelopment in Broad Ripple on College Avenue. He was tired of the blight and wants to see new development. Gee Whiz, there’s about five million dollars of TIF money from tax payers slotted to go to that development. We pioneers and risk-takers at 49th and College have been crying for help with TIF and development for more than eight years. Is anybody listening???? Get rid of the dirt parking lot. Matthew Tully, I implore you, for the sake of all the entrepreneurs at that corner will you please take on our case? Will you research what has transpired over the years (it’s a lot) and write our story? SOS….(save our stores) from this blight. I miss my old place but Andrew and crew will treat it well. It went from dogs to chickens…..pets in the city. They make you smile. Broad Ripple Fall Gallery Tour Friday, October 11
Don’t miss the Broad Ripple Fall Gallery Tour on Friday, October 11 from 5-9pm. The Fall Gallery Tour will feature galleries, boutiques and shops each hosting their own unique art exhibits. The exhibits are scattered throughout the Village making it a wonderful evening for attendees to come explore Broad Ripple and support the arts community! Enjoy unique art exhibits encompassing a wide variety of mediums including traditional art, ceramics, jewelry and fine crafts. Each location provides complimentary snacks and beverages. The Fall Gallery Tour is brought to you by participating Village merchants and the BRVA; presented by Flanner and Buchanan Funeral Centers and supported by restaurants Ambrosia, Corner Wine Bar, and JT’s Grille and Bar. Pints for Half-Pints: A craft beer experience that raises funds for education! Join us on October 19 from 4-8 p.m. at The Speak Easy (5255 Winthrop Ave.) You must be 21 or older to attend. Your $10.00 admission (cash or credit card) includes a souvenir pint glass. Food and drink tickets will be sold separately. Enjoy craft beer from local breweries, grilled food, prizes, and live entertainment. Come support your favorite brewers as they test their trivia skills in Broad Ripple Brewers Throw Down! All proceeds will benefit STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) initiatives at IPS Schools 55 and 91.
Broad Ripple Zombie Walk and Prom October 19
Now in its 6th year, the Broad Ripple Zombie Walk has become Indiana's largest Zombie themed flash mob. The fake blood flows as the undead swarm Broad Ripple for a series of events to benefit Gleaners Food Bank. Their hunger for brainz topped only by their thirst for charity. In 2012, The Broad Ripple Zombie Walk registered over 800 Zombies and collected 3,400 lbs of canned food. This massive horde has created a "2nd Halloween weekend" for Broad Ripple. Parking Permit Survey Closes October 12
The BRVA is exploring the feasibility and desirability of a Residential Parking Permit Program. To assist us in understanding residents’ desire for such a program and in identifying what the need is in specific geographic areas, we are asking Broad Ripple residents participate in a survey.
