Oh my! The weather was perfect for the 2013 Fall gallery Tour in Broad Ripple Village. There were 24 locations participating in the 2013 Fall Gallery Tour: Artifacts, Artistry in Clay, Ashland Gallery & Stu's Studio, Chelsea's, CLOTH, Editions Limited Gallery of Fine Art, Fine Estate Art & Rugs, Flanner & Buchanan Funeral Centers, Girly Chic Boutique, Hoosier Salon, Indianapolis Art Center, Indy Upcycle, Inspire, Just Pop In!, Marigold Clothing, Neat-O, Sigman's Gallery, The Bungalow and The Art Spot Gallery, The Fur Bee, The Gift Gallery @ Ceramic Dreams, The Potter's House, The Thompson Collection, and Urban Optiks. Way too many fior this photographer to get to in four hours! We visited as many as we could - a little art, a little food, good times. He is originally from Logansport, Indiana. “I have many clients in the Indianapolis and Broad Ripple area and also several clients that come down from South Bend. I ended up being connected to an individual there and got connected to others. Indianapolis and Broad Ripple are the crux, but I don’t want to leave out those clients from South Bend that drive down,” he said. The Coaching Cabin’s high visibility along the Monon Trail places it in an ideal setting. “I like to say that I envisioned this location before I found it. I wanted something small, but to be independent, in a village area with high foot traffic and I wanted it to be older, something that had a soul, which this place certainly does. I created that vision for it and it found me or I found it, however you prefer to look at it. The Coaching Cabin opened in April of 2012. I transitioned from corporate coaching where I coached salespeople toward successful roles and life balance. It was a stepping stone working in that world and allowing me the opportunity to transition to here, The Coaching Cabin and doing my life’s work. It’s a much wider breadth of coaching I am able to do here, serving my clients in a multiple of facets versus the agenda of an organization,” he noted. Coaching services are available by appointment. “A Company of Women: New and Selected Poems” Mary The Failers, Rick Dodd and the Dickrods, Finest Grain Sexson, Lylanne Musselman, Jayne Marek Thursday, October 31 Friday, October 25 Birdy’s Bar & Grill Big Hat Books & Arts 2131 East 71st Street - 21+, doors open 8:00 PM 6510 Cornell Avenue - 6:00 PM, free, all-ages Big Hat Books & Arts is hosting an evening of poetry by the members of A Company of Women, a three-woman writing group based in Indianapolis. Their poems are insightful, frank, and humorous and draw upon their experiences as women, touching on friendship, family, loss, sexuality, and hope. I used to be afraid of poetry. I assumed that I wouldn’t get it. I thought that I wasn’t smart enough or in-touch with my feelings enough to understand poetry. I was wrong. I now think of poetry like songwriting; lyrics without the music. And like music, I connect with some of it and don’t with others. I think we can all connect with this group of women (even if you’re not a women). Jayne Marek is the author of Women Editing Modernism and a book of poetry, Imposition of Form on the Natural World. Lylanne Musselman is the author of three books and her one-act play, Surfacing, has been performed at Ball State University, and her monologue "Of Mother and Men" appears in Mother/ Daughter Monologues Vol. 2. Mary Sexson is the author of the book 103 in the Light: Selected Poems 1996-2000. Her work has been included in many journals and poetry projects and she is a kick-ass Scrabble player (I know this from painful experience). The evening promises to be full of laughter and wonderful poetry.
After you’ve tucked your little ghosts and goblins in bed or feel safe turning on your lights back on from hiding in the dark after running out of Halloween candy or however you celebrate the ghoulish evening– swing into Birdy’s for a night of great music and good people. I always say that all Indianapolis bands are related to each other in some way. In the case of this show it is pretty easy to connect those dots. The Failers is made up of Aaron Adelsperger, Jim Borders, Chad Dressler, and Stephen Fields – musicians that have played in some of my favorite local bands from days gone by; Paging Raymond and Odyssey Favor. Rick Dodd and the Dickrods members are Rick Dodd, Sean Jackson, Erik Styles, Andy Shutz and Chad Dressler. Chad also plays in The Failers. Finest Grain is the duo of Sean Jackson and Kent Vernon. Sean also plays in Rick Dood and the Dickrods. Sean also used to have legendary Halloween parties and his guests wore some of the cleverest costumes that I’ve seen. In fact I met Sean when we lived on the same street and one Halloween I crashed his backyard party. I can’t wait to see what costumes appear for this show. Expect an evening of delightful original music leaning towards the singer-songwriter, pop, and folk sensibilities.

Writer’s Harvest features a bounty of writers. Writers so amazing that I get nervous just by typing their names. Seriously, my palms are sweaty. The Fault in Our Stars author John Green will headline Butler’s first-ever Writer’s Harvest. Green, who delivered Butler’s 2013 commencement address, has recently been spending time on the set of the film adaptation of his #1 New York Times bestselling book. The evening will also feature other Indianapolis-based writers. Novelist Ben H. Winters is the author of Edgar Award-winning The Last Policeman and its 2013 sequel Countdown City. Susan Neville is a short-fiction writer who teaches English at Butler. Poet Allyson Horton is a Butler graduate student. Admission is free and open to the public. Those who attend are asked to bring a bag of rice or a box of pasta for Second Helpings. If you’re wondering what type of pasta to bring, spaghetti noodles are great – kiddos will eat any vegetable that is tucked in strands of spaghetti.

The Sunset Stomp Jazz Band was born in 2010 after a show that Robin Hopkins and Kathleen Miller both performed in. The result is a seven piece plus vocalist ensemble performing the music of the Jazz Age. The band name comes from Louis Armstrong’s “Sunset Cafe Stomp”, which came from the Sunset Cafe on Chicago’s south side, where Louis Armstrong played before going on to New York. The group performs Dixie music, combining the traditional with new arrangements. Whether you want to bring your swing dancing shoes or just sit back and enjoy a good time is promised. And did you know that The Jazz Kitchen was voted one of the “World’s Top 100 Jazz Clubs in the World” by Downbeat Magazine? How cool is that?

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Slow Eating With ANIMAL and Buckminster Fuller Michael 'ANIMAL' Lochmüeller thought a lot of Buckminster Fuller. He told me he dined once with him. He said that Bucky was easily the slowest eating person he had ever seen. He explained to Michael why he ate that way. Michael later became the slowest eater I have ever seen. ANIMAL thought a lot of Buckminster Fuller. Michael once told me that Buckminster Fuller had 20 secretaries. I have no way of looking it up. I have been living in the 20th Century since the 20th Century. Apparently Bucky F. once suggested that a roof be placed over the city of Indianapolis. Michael would smile when he told that story. Michael also smiled on my second-to-last visit to see him. I showed him photos of the geodesic dome I stayed in in Anchor Point, Alaska. His eye got a twinkle and he said, "You know, Buckminster Fuller invented this." Yes, indeed. Now maybe Alan could show us the invention of my slow-eatingmentor's slow-eating-mentor.

7 Oct 25 - Nov 7, 2013 I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. Butler Theatre Presents 'Romeo & Juliet'
“Never was a story of more woe than this of Juliet and her Romeo,” William Shakespeare wrote in 1594—and from Nov. 13-17, Indianapolis theatergoers can experience this classic story of love and woe when Butler Theatre presents Romeo & Juliet at the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts. Show times are 8 p.m. on Nov. 13 and 14, 7 p.m. Nov. 15, 8 p.m. Nov. 16, and 2 p.m. Nov. 17. Tickets are $19 for adults, $13 for senior, and $8 for students. They’re available through the Schrott Center box office, (317) 940-2787. Director Tim Hardy, the Christel DeHaan Visiting International Theatre Artist from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England, has set the production in 1920s Verona, Italy. He cut the running time to roughly two hours, and will present the play on what he describes as a “huge, realistic set,” complete with windows, balconies, and a staircase. For the Capulets’ ball scene, he’s even enlisted 10 dancers from Butler Ballet. Hardy said people think they know Romeo & Juliet—“and they do in one way”—but there’s actually so much more to it. “Yes, it is about love—and enormous, passionate love,” he said. “But Romeo and Juliet actually only have four scenes together. A lot of it is about prejudice and bigotry, and how that can be totally destructive.” Hardy has directed Romeo & Juliet before—a studio production at the Royal Academy in London—but he’s happy to present Butler Theatre’s production of the drama in the 450-seat Schrott Center. He said the “knockdown, drag-out realistic set will suit that space very well. And acoustically, it’s well-nigh perfect.” To prepare for this production, Hardy read over the script and felt it was overwritten. Before

cutting it, though, he went to talk to a Shakespearean scholar in England. “And this guy, he was so pleased,” Hardy said. “He said, ‘Absolutely. And especially Act V. It’s a young man showing off. He overwrote. Cut it.’” “I think my job is to reinvent it so it’s fresh and new for today’s audience, rather than dusting down a classic,” he said. “And we’re doing school matinees (at 10 a.m. Nov. 14 and 15), which I’m really pleased about. And if some of those young people come thinking, ‘Oh, God, it’s Shakespeare,’ and go away thinking, ‘Wow, I didn’t know it could be like that,’ I’ll be pleased.”
Public skating returns to State Fairgrounds
Ice skating returns to the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the first time in 17 months with a free public skating session in the new Youth Arena Saturday, Oct. 5 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Rental skates will also be available for free on a first come, first served basis. This will mark the first skating event to take place in the $10 million facility that opened in August during the Indiana State Fair. “This is like a second ‘Grand Opening’ for the Youth Arena, and we want to provide an opportunity for the whole city to come see it and enjoy this wonderful new ice surface,” State Fairgrounds Executive Director Cindy Hoye said. “This is where we will host all our skating and hockey activities until the Coliseum is reopened next year.” Public skating sessions officially begin Monday, Oct. 7. Admission will be $6 for skaters 4 years of age and older; children 3 and younger skate free. Figure skates may be rented for $4; hockey skates are available for $5. Balance is what it's all about in a bottle of wine. When opened the "nose" should be inviting offering up notes of fruit or spices. That aroma should make you want to take a sip. And that taste should entice and enliven, not assault your palate. Too much tannin and it leaves a bitter taste. Too much residual sugar and it leaves a flabby, empty feeling. Too much wood or oak might be the winemaker masking bad juice. An eye-appealing label and hefty price tag might make you think you are buying quality wine. But more often than not you are just paying the marketing bill or new tasting room at the winery. Your money is not going for what is inside the bottle. What you thought you were getting and what ends up in your glass are two very different things. As I look at the proposed development for the corner of College and Broad Ripple Avenue I think of the same things. The drawing of the plan does not show the houses, cars, VFW, stoplights, delicate sewer system or the mostly empty new parking garage across the street and retail space below it. It portrays the canal as more of a river rather than the charming, historic land mark it is. It fails to include the fact that up the road a few blocks several lanes of traffic on College are being removed to install a bike trail thus creating traffic back ups to the north as well as the south. And that TIF money will help fund it. When John Hill built the two buildings next to The Broad Ripple Brewpub they were done with taste and proportion. Balance. The look, the size, the purpose were all in step with the feel of Broad Ripple Village. Alas, the BRVA scolded him for doing so without its consultation and instead of encouraging his business to expand, left him to find new residents. A similar situation occurred when Van Salon wanted to add another story to it's house/building on College, almost directly across from the proposed Browning development. Nearby neighbors brought up the fact that the plan was too big for the space leading to excess rainwater runoff, sewer troubles, parking and traffic that would all take away from the neighborhood. The BRVA listened and denied the expansion. Balance. It's a matter of taste. And something we should think about whenever we put our money where our mouth is. I'm not anti-big box or change in building or bottle. In fact my recommended wine this week is one you can find at Trader Joe's. And it's produced by E & J Gallo. Dark Horse Red. It's rich, lush and balanced. Inviting nose that leads into similar flavors of blackberry, black currant and mocha. And less than $10. Even big production wine can get back to its historic roots and produce new wine with the same character and quality it did when it first started. Jill A. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 1 in the left section of the bottom row which contains 2-3-5-9. The 1 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to both sides of the 3. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter For Love of Leaves “The falling leaves drift by the window …The autumn leaves of red and gold.” These seasonal song lyrics are once again playing in my mind. Autumn also has a way of motivating me to get ready to hibernate. Cleaning up the birdhouses and putting them away, cleaning and filling birdfeeders, changing the birdbath top so it can withstand an unwanted freeze, taking down hummingbird feeders, winterizing porch furniture, and storing the yard swing are the tasks at hand. Alas, it’s a lot of work to put things away. Then there’s the window washing and putting up storm windows. Beyond all the work, this is also the time I like to bring things from my backyard into the house. I look for the last blossoms of summer to put in a vase on the kitchen table. That late rose always seems to be the most beautiful. Remaining tomatoes go on the windowsill to ripen indoors. I cut and freeze herbs for winter cooking. Jars of jam, pickles, herbed vinegar, and applesauce get stored in the basement. Any fragile plants are brought indoors in hopes of carrying them over to the next growing season It’s time to celebrate the season by bringing the outdoors into our homes. Using leaves and ornamental grasses from backyards can yield a Martha Stewart moment even in the most modest of decors. I love to look for beautiful fallen leaves, spreading them on tabletops. For dinner parties, I use them as place cards, lettering guests’ names on them with a gold ink pen. Tracing and then coloring leaves can add a seasonal accent on many surfaces. Still more artful projects can involve drying leaves, dipping them in glycerin or preserving them between pieces of clear Contact paper, My fascination with leaves goes back to childhood when I incorporated them in gift making. As a youngster, I would take a leaf, put a new dishcloth over it, and rub a crayon on the cloth. The imprint of the leaf would appear. Using a hot iron, the crayon would set and I would have a lovely gift for my mother. This also works on pillow cases or placemat―paper or cloth. Of course there was the leaf collection for school science class too. This fall I’m feeling inspired to make a wreath of colored leaves, Indian corn, gourds, bittersweet, and dried hydrangeas. I figure it will extend the feeling of autumn until Thanksgiving. Crime on the Monon: Teens attack jogger, IMPD offers safety tips On October 7, police arrested a 14-yearold juvenile and an 18-year-old after the two robbed a woman on the Monon Trail in the 3500 block of the Trail at 7:30 p.m. The jogger told police that two men came up to her. One pointed a silver gun to her face and said get on the ground. He then demanded her cell phone. The man took the phone and also her can of mace. A police officer spotted them near 30th Street and Guilford Avenue and arrested them. (Source: WISH TV and the Indianapolis Star). IMPD has the following suggestions to stay safe on the Monon Trail: • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If something doesn’t seem right, it probably isn’t. • Use the buddy system. • Do not use the trail after dark alone. Don’t make yourself an easy target. • Leave valuables at home. If you must bring them with you, lock them in the trunk of your car. • If you are wearing headphone, only use one of the ear buds. • Have a cell phone with you in case you need to call for help. • Make sure someone knows where you will be in case of an emergency. • Don’t fight with attackers. Sertoma Club of BR sponsors Special Olympics fundraiser On September 19, the Special Olympics of Washington Township held its first annual Charity Golf Outing at the Pebblebrook Golf Club in Westfield. The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple was the primary sponsor of the event which included 68 golfers. In all, 90 friends of Special Olympics attended the dinner following the outing. The funds raised at the outing will be used to pay for the costs of athletes and participants at upcoming events such as next year’s Special Olympics State Track Meet in Terre Haute. The goal of the Special Olympics organization is to give athletes and partners an opportunity to become fulfilled and productive members of the community by developing confidence, self esteem and skills through sports. Special Olympians can start at age 8 and participate into adulthood. Sertoma is an organization whose goal is service to mankind. In addition to its new sponsorship of The Special Olympics, The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple provides aid to Noble of Indiana and the Cranial Facial Unit of Riley Children’s’ Hospital. The Broad Ripple Sertoma members saw the Pebblebrook golf outing as a way to expand their commitment to helping others through service.

New BR Hotel coming soon Frustrated by the lack of hotels and motels in the area? The nearest ones are downtown (7 miles) or Keystone at the Crossing (7 miles) or Carmel. Relief is on the way. Debbie Hasbrook will open the Hotel Broad Ripple next spring. [B&Bs and Hostel also in area - see directory p. 18] Located on Westfield Boulevard right on the Monon Trail (just south of CrossFit Broad Ripple and Howald Heating & Air Conditioning), the new hotel will have rooms starting at $150 per night. The nine room hotel will also feature a lounge/bar which will be open to the public. Guests will be just steps from the Village's restaurants and shops. Holliday Park Fall Festival October 27 There is a lot going on over at Holliday Park. The Park has its Fall Festival on October 27 from 1pm to 5 pm which includes entertainment and lots of fun activities. These include a reptile program, a live animal program, the Rusty Musket Band, marshmallows around the campfire, a scavenger hunt, fall crafts and snacks. Also, congratulations to Adam Barnes, the new chief of the park. Art Center Pop Up Classes: A Glass Pumpkin Don't miss glass pumpkin (a pop up class ) to be held October 27 and again on November 2 and November 10 from 1pm to 3pm (and a fee of $40). Pop Up classes are new two hour classes offered by the Indianapolis Art Center. Take the train to Chicago Thanks to Governor Pence and INDOT for agreeing to continue the Amtrak Hoosier State train service to Chicago (which could have ended service on October 16). You can take the train to Union Station in Chicago and back for around $48. Leave at 6 a.m. and return Chicago at 5:45 p.m. local time. Now that the state and local communities are funding part of the cost, Amtrak has agreed to work on better service (like later departure times in the morning). “Crime Prevention Measures in Indianapolis”
On Tuesday, November 12, 2013, at 7:00 p.m., Troy Riggs, Indianapolis Public Safety Director, will speak at All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 E. 56th St., Indianapolis, 46226 about current measures being implemented to curtail violent crime in Indianapolis. His presentation will be followed by a question and answer period. Please join us for a reception immediately following the presentation. This lecture is free to the public. Troy Riggs was appointed Indianapolis Safety Director in September, 2012. He came to Indianapolis from Corpus Cristi, Texas, where he was assistant city manager and formerly Chief of Police. Riggs also spent 20 years in Louisville as a police officer, where he departed with the rank of Lt. Colonel. Under his leadership in Indianapolis, the Department of Public Safety has implemented new programs and safety measures to address violent crime and to determine and impact the root causes of these incidents. The Community Speakers’ Forum presents monthly programs by persons of prominence and/or leadership in the community. It is planned as a public service educational opportunity designed to inform Indianapolis residents on topics of importance and interest and to provide information which will enhance their lives.

Butler Univ Receives $2.9M Grant to Create Science Museum
The Center for Urban Ecology at Butler University has been awarded a four-year, $2.9 million National Science Foundation grant to create sites along six Indianapolis waterways where arts and science will be used to educate the public about Indianapolis’s water system. “We’re creating the first science museum in Indianapolis, but it will not be a building,” said Tim Carter, director of the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE). “Instead, we’re using the city itself as a learning environment and focusing on six waterways and the adjacent neighborhoods.” The six waterways are the White River, Fall Creek, Central Canal, Eagle Creek, Pleasant Run, and Pogue’s Run, all located in priority areas identified by the neighborhoods through the Reconnecting to Our Waterways (ROW) initiative (ourwaterways.org). By spring 2015, the six Indianapolis/City as Living Laboratory sites will be established at destinations along these waterways. These locations, which will have activities such as dance, music, and poetry that will interpret scientific content, build on previous projects developed in Indianapolis and New York City by Mary Miss Studio. There will be opportunities for community members to engage with work built by collaborations between artists and scientists. In addition, the project will be accessible virtually through a site-specific app for mobile devices and on the Internet so that temporary installations will have a life beyond the live performances. Funding will go to the artists, for installing sites, and also toward research and evaluation so that the lessons learned from this project can inform future installations in other places. Decide before you feel Deprived It isn’t news to anyone that portion sizes and calorie counts in most restaurants and homes are significantly higher than those 20 or even 10 years ago. This, combined with our significantly lower activity levels since most of us are sedentary at work, has led to an inevitable result: large rates of obesity and overweight people. This becomes extremely frustrating in that most of us do not want to spend the time or money constantly label reading for exact portion sizes, and buying the healthiest foods for every meal. This obstacle can cause many to not even attempt to control their intake and follow suit with the majority of people around them by eating every ounce of whatever is handed to them. However, there are several easy and manageable tips that can be extremely effective in controlling your portion sizes. It is more about what is going on in your head than in your gut. Humans (and most animals) are very visually biased and base the proper amount of food they feel they need more on what they see on a plate than their actual hunger levels. A few studies captured my interest on how visual we actually are and how to use it to your advantage rather than to your demise. For example, a tall skinny 8 oz. glass and a short fat 8 oz. glass obviously hold the same amount of liquid. However, the skinny glass appears as though it has more liquid in it than the short glass. Therefore, when people drank the juice from the skinny glass they assumed they were served more than those who drank from the short glass and consumed less yet felt more satisfied. Take Home Tip: Drink from tall, skinny glasses (But beware of tall and fat glasses!). Another study used M&Ms. It concluded that if you give people a bag of M&M's all the same color, they won't eat nearly as many as if it's a multicolored bag. More variety can trigger people to eat more, even though they must know they're all the same flavor. Another point for less variety at one meal is the Thanksgiving dinner analogy. Even though you are full, you couldn’t imagine continuing to eat if you only were offered green beans with your Turkey….but you could always keep eating when you haven’t even tried the sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce and mashed potatoes yet…not to mention pumpkin pie! Take Home Tip: Choose one protein, vegetable/fruit and starch for each meal. You will be less likely to overeat once you get your “fill” of the flavors of each. Several studies have shown a drastic reduction of portion intake when using smaller bowls, plates and even utensils. Large plates create an urge to fill each space with food; Or if there is an open space on a large plate this may lead to a deprived feeling and a desire to go for seconds, even when your body has had enough or more than enough food. Take Home Tip: Try using smaller plates and fill them up. After waiting 10 minutes when finishing your plate, you will likely not feel you need more food. If you do, then allow yourself no more than half your plate for seconds, and I assure you will feel full! Another tip was to use square plates with sloped sides instead of round plates because they have less surface area. Lastly, a good solid tip is to take your food from the bag or container and always eat from your (small) plate. This will help to prevent “mindless” eating, since you will SEE your food instead of taking it from the bag directly to your mouth. Obviously, there are hundreds more pointers for managing your portions. A good idea is to start with one or two at a time and slowly incorporate others so you will hardly even notice you are eating less while feeling satisfied at the same time.

He has been a member of several bands that have played the Broad Ripple area, including United States Three that performed at the recent WARMfest. An exhibit of the architectural designs of Jan Ruhtenberg, grandfather of Vess, is currently at IMOCA in Fountain Square. Jan was a famous architect and worked with Philip Johnson. The exhibit runs through November 23.

Business cards can be an invaluable networking tool when you meet a new contact or potential employer. Depending on what information they contain, it could mean the difference between being contacted later or being left in a rolodex. You could create a design or logo that uniquely describes your talents and abilities. There is only one person who will ever be like you and this is an ideal way to help you stand out from the crowd. The front of your business card should contain your name and contact information. It doesn’t necessarily need your home address, but should include your current or future job title you are seeking. A phone (or cell) number, e-mail address, LinkedIn page or webpage that displays samples of your work are also important. If you use a logo, try to create a visual balance between it and the information so it doesn’t appear cluttered. For example, an aspiring teacher could use an image of a desk, apple or school while a programmer could include a computer icon. The image could appear on one side of the business card or in the middle with supporting text around it. Pictures can also be eye catching, like the Broad Ripple Village and canal aerial photo appearing on Gazette Publisher Alan Hague’s business card. The back of your business card can list your skills or career highlights, though clarity and brevity are crucial here. Include your related accomplishments in a bullet point format. While this information typically appears on a resume, it can easily be summarized. If left blank, you could be omitting valuable information that saves an employer time trying to locate. The difference in the cost of printing on both sides of a business card can pay off in the long run. A stack of resumes clutters any hiring manager’s desk, but a business card can tell your story by emphasizing what you can do for a potential employer. Use color or black type at your discretion. If you are seeking a creative profession, certain colors can differentiate your business card’s appearance. If your position is more traditional, black text on a white background can be effective. Local office supply stores can print business cards for you or the UPS Store on Broad Ripple Avenue at 466-9616. Another source is www.vistaprint.com. A minimal investment in a business card showcasing your skills could potentially lead you to a new job or career.
