mario@broadripplegazette.com The fourth annual Midtown Holiday Home Tour is Saturday, November 9 and Sunday, November 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Marsha Langdon started this tour in 2010. She is co-chair of the event with Cindy Zweber-Free, who is President of the Midtown Indy Board of Directors. “In its fourth year, the Midtown Holiday Home Tour will again have five diverse homes in three different neighborhoods decorated for the holidays, which sets this home tour apart from others. We are grateful for the talented floral designers, David Strohmeyer of The Empty Vase, Sheri Hilton who is The Frugal Decorator and Ken Johnson from Simply Amish, all who are decorating homes in the spirit of Christmas. Missy Cheshire, of Palm Court Designs will design autumnal colors of Thanksgiving for a lovely Arts and Crafts home,” said Ms. Langdon. Advance tickets can be purchased for $15 on-line through www.midtownindy. org or at: The Empty Vase (111 East 49th Street) and National Bank of Indianapolis (49 North Pennsylvania Avenue), Be Boutique (5607 North Illinois Street) and at The Riviera Club (5640 North Illinois Street). Tickets available the day of the tour at homes are $20. Architectural designs of the tour homes are: American Foursquare, an Arts and Crafts bungalow, French Colonial and two English Tudor homes, one of which has a Spanish influence. A Broad Ripple Kiwanis fundraiser, Pints for Half Pints, was held recently at Speak Easy, located at 5255 North Winthrop Avenue. From Suzie Neal of Broad Ripple Kiwanis, "We were very pleased with the event. We raised three times the amount of our inaugural year (2012) and had twice the attendance. We had the generous support of six Broad Ripple area breweries (Broad Ripple Brew Pub, Brugge, Thr3e Wise Men, Triton, Upland, and Bier), and many local businesses through sponsorships and donations of food and items for raffle baskets. More than 40 volunteers helped stage the event. "The proceeds of Pints for Half-Pints will be used to benefit STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) programs at IPS schools, primarily Schools 55 and 91. We are already supporting STEM at these schools. This year we funded two new robotics clubs at School 51, and the continuation of the robotics club at School 91 (which we helped start last year). We also are providing supplies and judges at School 55 to enable their participation in the science fair. Currently, we are working with the schools to determine the best use of the proceeds. "We are already looking forward to next year's Pints for Half-Pints. We believe that it benefits all of us in Midtown and Broad Ripple to have strong schools, and are excited about being able to provide additional support with these new funds."

BRVA elections held at annual meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com The annual public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) was held on October 15 at the Indianapolis Art Center. The election for board members occurs at the annual meeting. BRVA president Jay Wetzel (pictured above) opened the meeting at 7:15pm. He announced that the next public BRVA meeting will be held on April 15 at 7pm at the Art Center. Past BRVA president Mark Wolf described what the BRVA means to the community and how all residents and businesses can become involved. He mentioned recent activities such as watching over zoning issues, safety issues, and working with the city on the Cornell Avenue project. Jay listed each of the BRVA committees and described their 2013 accomplishments and 2014 goals and the need for volunteers. The volunteer opportunities are in Public Safety, Beautification, Economic Development, Land Use & Development, Parking, Special Events, Historic Broad Ripple, Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress, and Communications. BRVA president-elect Justin McKeand introduced each of the candidates for the board member election. There were seven candidates vying for five open board positions. Steve Brining, Aletha Dunston, Jim Holland, Elizabeth Marshall, Lora Olive, Kent Springer, and Mark Wolf. After the voting, the floor was opened to Community Sharing. Then the meeting was adjourned and everyone went into the lobby to mingle and enjoy the food provided by Taverna. Announcement just before press time: The five new board members will be Aletha Dunston, Jim Holland, Elizabeth Marshall, Kent Springer, and Mark Wolf.

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle I’m late with marking my Broad Ripple Gazette anniversary and that is fitting; because as the ever-patient Alan Hague, can attest, I’m always late turning in this column. By my estimation this is my 200th column and 150,000-ish word published. I’m on third my computer, fourth camera, and second job – we won’t discuss relationships – since I’ve started writing Buzzing Around Town. Like all of the Gazette writers, this is a volunteer gig for me, and I am honored to be part of this community-centered paper. I’ve worked and lived in Broad Ripple area off and on for the last 25 years, yet I still feel like I’m new in town. I love the pride that folks take in being associated with the Village and the deep connection to the history of the area. I’ve seen music venues go and new ones pop up in the last eight years, part of the ebb and tide of an area I suppose. I am continually inspired by the commitment to live music in Broad Ripple. From the big stage of The Vogue to the basement of the Corner Wine Bar you can find music every night at all points in the neighborhood. I hope to run into you in one of them soon. Include as many details as possible – who, what, when, where, ticket price, and anything else that might be helpful. I’d love to hear from you. Mars or the Moon is made up of Broad Ripple musical icons, Joe Hart and Lani Williams. The duo began writing together and soon added percussionist, Lenen Nicola. The group wears a lot of musical labels – folk, singer-songwriter, roots, psychedelic, and Americana – they have lovely harmonies and kind souls. What more do you want in music, really?

Plan on having dinner at Birdy’s. I’m a big fan of the chicken tenders, they go especially well with Irish Whiskey.

The artists of the Tonic Gallery were invited to reimagine the LP cover. The show will feature 12” x 12” art – the size of an album cover. I’ve been lucky enough to see two of the pieces ahead of time. Artist Brinton Farrand has created two covers – one Tom Petty inspired, the other Jerry Garcia. All of the proceeds from the Tonic Gallery benefit Second Helpings, a food rescue, culinary job-training, and hunger relief organization serving our city – including senior and childcare programs right in our neighborhood.

Houndmouth with the Wheeler Brothers Thursday, November 21 The Vogue Theater 6259 N. College Ave - 21+, doors 7 PM, show 8 PM, $15.
I got to interview the Wheeler Brothers last year at the Austin City Limits Festival. The band is made up of three actual Wheeler brothers – Nolan, Patrick, and Tyler. Fellow Austin, TX natives Danny Matthews and A.J. Molyneaux round out the band. The brothers Wheeler didn’t play music until Tyler won a guitar in a shoe store raffle drawing when they were young. Tyler confessed that he “crunched up the ticket so it would get picked. I knew that I was going to win.” As one guitar and three boys was not a good combination, their father wound up smashing the guitar to quash any further arguments. The boys ultimately worked it out by choosing different instruments. I asked if the brotherly smack-downs continue on tour. Patrick told me “Nolan has a safety net as the singer because you can’t punch him in the mouth, and we realize that we all need to be in good shape to tour.” For all of the fisticuff talk the guys were entertaining and charming and they clearly enjoy each other. Their camaraderie was clear when I got to hear them play; their infectious stage presence had me bopping along in the photo pit (even though it is so not-cool to dance in the pit). Their sound is Americana-rock at its most fun – there is hope even in the melancholy. New Albany, Indiana’s own Houndmouth is headlining the show. They formed in 2011 and quickly gained a following with their Americana sounds and fervent live shows.

Eight years ago when I started writing this column I was begging you to attend the Tonic Ball. This year, Tonic Ball 12 is almost sold out. As always it will be a great night of music – 45 bands donating their time for a great cause – fighting hunger in Indianapolis. I’ll see you there – I’ll be the one with an ear-to-ear grin. It is my most-definitely my favorite night of the year.

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. 7 Nov 8 - Nov 21, 2013 I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Kids Ink is Hosting Little Lost Girls!
Kids Ink’s very own Mab Graves has always had an artistic eye and the means to express it. Now, not only can readers take her artwork home, they can play with them! On November 16th, Kids Ink will be celebrating the release of Little Lost Girls! Starting at 1pm in our store (5619 N. Illinois St), Mab will lead her audience in activities such as drawing and paper doll construction. She’ll have some of her original artwork and scale models on display as well! Kids Ink will be giving away pins, bookmarks, and a raffle will be held for prizes – every customer gets a ticket! A native Hoosier, Mab is an active traveler and painter, has shown her work in several galleries across the country as well as right here in Indiana. Matt Schwegman to join House of Blues Entertainment
While HOBE is still a few weeks away from unveiling the name of the new 900 capacity concert club in Louisville, they have hired Matt Schwegman as lead talent buyer for the venue. In addition to booking shows at the new room (set to open in April of 2014), Schwegman will also be responsible for booking the Louisville Palace Theater and overseeing all HOBE interests in Kentucky. A graduate of the University of Cincinnati, Schwegman got his start at another Live Nation venue, Bogart's Concert Club. In 2000, he moved to Indianapolis and has booked The Vogue for the past 13 years, helping create a thriving & vibrant music scene in the Indiana state capital. "Matt has a great understanding of the club business, and we look forward to him bringing that same club mentality to Louisville", said Dan Kemer Vice President of HOBE Midwest Music. Kate DiCamillo has written the books we either read to our children, or grew up with ourselves. Perhaps best known as the author of Tales of Despereaux, she also penned the Bink and Gollie and Mercy Watson series, and her latest book, Flora and Ulysses, is already earning critical acclaim. On November 10th, she will be at the Glendale Library reading and signing autographs. Kate DiCamillo takes the stage at 2pm. The first half hour will be devoted to speaking, reading from her works, and a Q&A session, followed by signing. This is a free event, and so no reservations will be taken. Wine like jazz depends as much on the time and place as the product. How many times have you enjoyed a bottle of wine on vacation and thought it was the most amazing juice to cross your lips. You return home, buy the bottle, pour the glass and what you taste is worlds apart from what you remembered. But the memories are still there so you don't just toss the bottle in the recycling bin. You sip and savor and experience it in a new way. I hadn't been to the Jazz Kitchen at 54th and college in years. Not as dark and small as I had remembered and I mean that as a good memory. But the vibe is still alive. Just enough lighting to see what you are eating or drinking as you partake from the menu. Tables close enough to lend a festive, party like atmosphere but not too close. You still feel as if you are having a one-on-one experience with the performer on stage. The stage itself is just a step up from the tables so once again more of that feeling that the musician is one with the people and vice versa. Which is another reason this place has presence. Everyone is open to share. There are no strangers in a room of jazz lovers. A nod, a smile, it's all done in rhythm to the performer. It truly is all about time and place. Hearing Freddy Cole and his Quartet last weekend was case in point. The 82 year old jazz pianist/singer has led a long and productive career on his own. His brothers were Nat King and Ike, and his son Lionel and niece Natalie have all shared their family talent in the music world. Freddy was having FUN on Saturday night. His fingers and voice still dexterous. He shared his life experience in a mischievous way as he delivered over an hour's worth of standards. Half silly, half serious, Freddy's phrasing of the familiar songs of love brought a NEW sense of joy and appreciation for everyone in the audience. His band was an enchanting mix too. Elias Bailey on the bass, head nodding, fingers moving, setting the groove. Randy Napoleon who looked like a teenager but is in his 30's played the guitar with the verve and vigor of Eddie

Van Halen riffing with 21st century energy but tucking notes tight so as not to out shine Freddy's elegant, inspired piano melodies. Drummer Curtis Boyd was in it for fun as well. I watched with delight as he used different sets of sticks, brushes, and a baton to punctuate the playful presentation. Freddy took time to meet the audience and sign CD's after the show. We had a lovely chat about Indianapolis and the fact that he grew up on the south side of Chicago. Though he's lived in New York for most of his life, his heart is still with the midwest. I met some friends after the show and sipped a bottle of Gascon Red Blend. This too was another time and place experience. I visited the Argentina winery 11 years ago and remember this bold, lush blend of Bonarda, Malbec, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Enjoying the 2011 bottling took me back to the wild, rugged, purity of the Mendoza wine region as I shared it with some of my neighbors. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 5 in the middle section of the top row which contains 2-3-6-9. The 5 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to right of the 6. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Remembering a Real Honey If you’ve ever shopped at Backyard Birds, you’ve probably met shop cat Miss B. Ripple, goldendoodle Webster, and senior golden retriever greeter Mel. These extraordinary pets have made the store a fun place. Some people stop in bringing treats and sitting awhile on the benches to visit with the critters. One of those special greeters is now gone. We lost Mel in October. At 15 ½ years of age, he was our “senior employee.” Lying on the plaid carpet and welcoming old and new customers was his daily mission. His story may not be a famous as that of Rin Tin Tin, Lassie or Marley, but he has a story that touched many lives. We received Mel when he was eight weeks old, our seventh dog to raise for Canine Companions for Independence. He had been flown from Santa Rosa, CA to Columbus, OH for us to bring to Indy for a little more than a year. We were responsible for all his expenses and weekly puppy and novice training classes at First Friends K9. Socializing him was also part of our responsibilities. So, off we went together to the grocery, church, shopping, parties, movies, and even to work at Lilly, all to get him This Mel’s last photo at 151/2 years of age.. .What a used to being in public. Honey! Mel arrived with his name. Because I had an uncle named Mel, the name always felt awkward for me. So I did some research, finding this golden boy’s name in Latin means (1) honey, (2) sweetness, pleasantness (3) darling, honey—how appropriately named! All of his litter had names beginning with M, and Mel was the perfect name for this prospective, honey-colored service dog. We returned Mel for advanced training in May 1999; he lasted only one month. We were so disappointed. Putting more than a year into launching a puppy only to have him eliminated from the program is like seeing a dear friend lose a job. Mel’s nemesis was a ferret, which he saw on a training field trip to a pet store. At first he was afraid of the ferret, and then he became so captivated by it that he wouldn’t leave it. Trainers decided this would be problematic for him as a service dog. So we were given the option either to adopt him or help someone else adopt him. Luckily we had a dear friend who wanted him. When we told her his official record of dismissal stated he was assertive, stubborn, and insensitive to correction, she said, “I’ve dated men just like that so I can surely handle a dog with those traits.” Although Mel happily lived with his missy, he spent most days at our house or the store. He even had extended stays during his missy’s illnesses, extreme cold or rainy weather, and vacations. He was one lucky dog to have two homes— one where he was the alpha and the other where he had companionship of a pack. We always said he had the best of both worlds. What I would like to share is what I learned from Mel. A dog doesn’t have to be a highly trained canine to serve. Although he didn’t wear a cape or harness, he did provide life, companionship, joy, humor, friendship, and love. He served as a welcoming presence and goodwill ambassador throughout his neighborhood. He would dance and bark for food always reminding us to enjoy our sustenance. He loved to lie on his back and wiggle, reminding us to love the earth whether it was crispy grass or cool snow. Although he could only bark, he was the center of many friendly conversations. He taught us to accept treats with gusto, nap to relax, dance in circles to release joy, show the younger puppies how to act, and have exemplary house manners even until the end. As part of the national Veterans Glassblowing Day, the Art Center is hosting a day of free art activities for veterans featuring glassblowing and painting activities. More info for both at www.indplsartcenter.org/popups Crime in the Ripple: GPS tracker on cell phone nabs robber On October 22, IMPD police officers used an iPhone app (Find My IPhone App) to track down an armed robbery suspect. The armed robbery occurred around 10:20 p.m. in the 900 block of E. 62nd Street in the Broad Ripple area. During the robbery, the victim’s iPhone and purse were stolen. The victim was able to provide a vehicle description and a witness tracked the stolen iPhone using a Track my iPhone app. With the app’s help, police tracked the suspect to the 4900 block of S. Hillside Avenue. Police said the suspect then led officers on a short vehicle pursuit to the 3700 block of Caroline Avenue. At that time, police said the suspect jumped from the car and ran on foot with gun in his hand. Officers were able to get the suspect’s handgun and recover the victim’s purse as well. Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities' Dance Magnet is excited to present Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker on Thursday, December 5. Broad Ripple students have been working for months to bring this production of one of the world's most well-know ballets to life. Celebrate Kurt Vonnegut at inaugural VonnegutFest
The inaugural VonnegutFest, hosted by the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library, is Nov. 9, 2013, in venues in and near downtown Indianapolis. VonnegutFest is a citywide celebration of the power of the arts and humanities to help us communicate. Created in honor of legendary author Kurt Vonnegut in his hometown, VonnegutFest educates the public about the author’s contributions to literature, humor, art and social consciousness, and explores how military veterans (like Vonnegut) use the arts and humanities to safely share their experiences with others while healing through the creative process. “We intend for this festive and thought-provoking event to become an annual celebration on or around Kurt Vonnegut’s birthday, Nov. 11, which is also Veterans Day, or “Armistice Day” as it was called in Vonnegut’s early years,” said Julia Whitehead, executive director of the Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library, the only facility in the world dedicated to the author of Slaughterhouse-Five, Breakfast of Champions and more than a dozen other works. Pointing Your Finger Results in Three More Pointing Back Picture this scenario: You are at the gym lifting weights and you see a group of fit guys making fun of an overweight woman struggling on an elliptical. Chances are you have seen this, done this or even experienced it for yourselves. And, sadly, it is not an uncommon occurrence. A little known fact is that I was actually overweight for a few years growing up and I have experienced this personally so it really infuriates me when I see someone overweight being discriminated against. First of all, if someone is overweight or obese chances are about 100% that they know it and don’t really need to be reminded by looks or comments. And as far as teasing an overweight person that is AT THE GYM is about as absurd as it gets. Think about how difficult it is for that person to begin; not only for the fact that he/she has a long way to go, but exponentially more so due to the likely scrutiny that are likely to endure by walking into the gym. This person has made a decision to attempt to improve their health and it should be nothing but applauded. When I have a new client consultation and they are very overweight I silently commend them for taking the leap to change. It is similar to an alcoholic attending their first AA meeting. It surely is an intimidating yet very brave decision, and clearly people aren’t making fun of them for trying to better their life. In fact, teasing people about their weight can actually contribute to their obesity. Researchers from Florida State University found that people who experience discrimination based on their weight were 2.5 times more likely to be obese four years later. In their study, researchers followed 6,000 participants over four years. The findings revealed that high school students who were harassed for being overweight responded by skipping workouts or gym class, and eating more. The adult participants avoided diets and found comfort in binge-eating. The study suggested that the teasing is often “justified” by the offenders because they falsely assume the jabs will motivate someone to lose weight. But it actually results in the opposite effect. Interestingly enough other forms of discrimination, pointedly in regards to race can also create health problems. For example, race discrimination is linked to hypertension, and coronary obstruction. So, when you feel like “helping” someone by pointing out their flaws, consider stopping yourself and think about how it would make you feel if you were in their shoes…not only in the case of an overweight person at the gym but at everything in life. Everyone has their battles, and in their case, it is a lot more “noticeable” than some others. The world would truly be a better place if people focused on bettering themselves rather than the shortcomings of others. And for my last point: I have dozens of “heavy” clients that could outlast most “thin” people I know. Don’t judge a book by its cover!! Laura Minor owner and operator of So.Be.Fit. Indianapolis Art Center Have you heard of a place that includes a library, more than 8 acres of land outside and has a lot of paintings? Is it a Park? NO!!! Is it a library? NO!!! Is it and art school? Possibly! It’s the Indianapolis Art Center!!!!!!! The Art Center is a wonderful place where you can have classes, paint, or just look around for FREE. When you walk right through those doors, you will be greeted by giant sculptures of microscopic creatures come to life. Did you know in the Art Center, they have more than 4 studios for different art? They have a metalsmithing studio for making jewelry, a woodworking studio for making furniture, steel & stone studio for making metal objects, a ceramics studio for clay and for making pots, a Moxley Glass Studio for glass, and painting & drawing for making as many paintings as you would like. In the back part of the center they have 9.5 acres of outside area. There is a library which can be used for weddings. They also have a painting gallery and offices with lobby. They give classes too. They have classes for glass making, woodworking, steel fabrication, ceramics, metalsmithing, textile, painting, furniture refinishing, and photography. It gives nearly 300 courses per semester. They offer classes for people ages 2-102. They give sample classes and up to 14 week classes. The Indy Art Center sends teachers through the country and has other teachers go to the Art Center. They have an art festival every year and artists come and sell their work. They have a lot of paintings. They have Pump Jack which is a sculpture by Garry Noland which costs $ 2,500. They have Pyramid by Stacy Lee Weber which is a cloth that costs 7,500! Yikes!!!!! The art center was founded in 1934 but the facility was built in 1996. Their phone number is 317.255.2464. They are located 820 East 67th Street, Indianapolis 46220. Their hours are 9 am- 10 pm on Mon. to Fri. On Saturday, they are 9 am-6 pm. On Sunday, their hours are noon to 6 pm.

I write this at Halloween. The Trick-or-Treaters have come and gone leaving me to think of all their costumes. There were the usual super heroes…..lots of Batmen and Spidermen. When I was a kid out with a pillowcase seeking treats the only super hero I remember was Superman. Does anyone remember Mighty Mouse? I look back to my youth and my real super hero was my big brother. He was the best brother in the whole world because he was eight years older than me and he took care of his “little baby sister”. He protected me from all the bratty boys in the neighborhood; the ones who called me names and made fun of me and the one who beat me over the head with my doll. He was the best brother until he would steal my Halloween candy. Since he was older and big and tall he could no longer go out so when I came home with the loot he would ransack it. I gladly gave him everything with nuts and coconut. It was a good trade to have his protection from the mean kids. Fifty years ago, Halloween night, 1963 was a horrible and tragic night in Indianapolis. The Indianapolis Star wrote about it Sunday, October 27th. Reading it brought it all back. Holiday on Ice was a big ice skating show that came to the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum annually. On that fateful night, while more than 4,300 spectators watched the show, propane tanks in a storage pit under seats in the southeastern corner of the coliseum exploded. People, seats, concrete, steel and debris were propelled loosening walls and flooring which caved creating a 50 foot wide crater down to the storage pit. Spectators were hurled into the crater or flown out onto the ice. Bodies were trapped and mangled. A second explosion created a fireball as high as the rafters. Some victims were so badly burned they could not be determined as male or female. The cold ice became a morgue as bodies were covered with blankets. Seventy-four people died and many hundred were injured. The newspapers reported that it was the worst disaster in city history, possibly state history. At the time I was a sophomore at Shortridge High School. The next morning at school was terrible. Shortridge was just down the street from the Coliseum. Many of my friends had gone to the ice show and some of them were hurt, dead or had parents, grandparents or siblings that were injured or dead. Back then there were no school councilors to console us. It was terribly sad. For this article I interviewed Harry E. Jones. Harry is a Broad Ripple High School alum, class of 1958. He was 23 years old when this explosion occurred. At the time he was a volunteer fireman with the Washington Township Fire Department at the station at 71st and Keystone. He told me that it was an all volunteer team with the exception of the fire truck drivers who were called engineers. The volunteers got the call on their radios at home and were dispatched. Harry was the 7th first responder to arrive on the scene. He was told not to go in because another explosion could happen. He weighed the options and told me that there was no way he couldn’t go in. He said what he saw was worse than war. The gore was awful. When he arrived there were two fire trucks. 150 including ambulances responded in total coming from as far as Richmond and Terre Haute. They used folding tables for gurneys. Harry never had closure from that horrible experience. He went on to serve as a firefighter and became President of that station’s volunteers. He helped to burn down farmhouses to clear fields to make way for Keystone at the Crossing and Castleton Mall. He later established a successful career in commercial real estate in the Chicago area. He retired and is now living in Naples, Florida. About ten years ago he heard that folks accomplished getting a memorial plaque placed at the Coliseum. He came home to see it. He needed that closure. It had been forty years. The city of Indianapolis had done nothing to honor the first responders or the victims in all that time. He told me that 9/11 had occurred and other tragedies elsewhere and those communities had paid tribute and homage. He was deeply hurt that our city ignored it as if nothing had happened. He couldn’t wait to come home to see the plaque. It meant everything to him. He told me of his disappointment when he found it. And he did have to find it. It was small and hung in a corner. He said you had to hunt for it. He felt that it was not historic with details and it was too generic. He thought it should be in a prominent place and it should list names. He was saddened that this was the best our city could do and that it took 40 years to do it. Most journalists mention parties in their columns by last name. I couldn’t call Harry through this column “Jones”. It’s too formal. I am his “little baby sister” and he is my super hero, the one I shared on that Halloween night fifty years ago. That night Harry you were a hero to many. I know this 50 year anniversary saddens you. I hope to give you and the rest of the wonderful emergency responders the recognition you so deserve. It was a horrible night that I know you made better for as many as you could. Thank you for taking good care of so many in your life. You make me smile! You are down in Florida and probably don’t even know that the Coliseum is undergoing renovation. I will put it out there that I hope that the memorial plaque is resituated in a more prominent place so that all the families will get their due closure. Perhaps someone reading this has that pull.
