Blice Edwards is a multi-faceted decorative art and design studio, whose work includes color consultations, faux finishes, ceiling murals, polished plaster, trompe l’oeil, (French for “Fool the eye”) wood graining, kids’ rooms, painted canvas applications for walls and ceilings and any custom art project for home or business. Chris Blice and Jon Edwards described their artistic beginnings. Chris said, “In 1992, during the faux painting boom, I was a waiter at Friday’s restaurant downtown and quit my job to focus on decorative painting. Jon explained, “I went to school for graphic design at the Columbus College of Art and Design before moving to New York, where I worked for two years at a package design firm. Everything I learned was the old fashioned way with pre-computer ruling pens, brushes and erasers like my grandfather had done. I didn’t want to sit behind a computer all of the time, so I did something a little fine art related.” He was painting backdrops for an Indianapolis company in 1993 when he met Chris. Combining their creative skills has left their signature brushstroke seen throughout Central Indiana and beyond. “We have painted multi-rooms, ceilings, floors, interior and exteriors in private homes across the country, including Pittsburgh, Naples and Orlando, Scottsdale, San Francisco and Chicago, but we’ve primarily worked in and around Indianapolis for the past 20 years,” Chris mentioned. One of their current projects, Titus Bakery, located at 820 West South Street in Lebanon, celebrated its Grand Opening on Friday, November 8th. Festivities included a ribbon cutting ceremony with local Blice Edwards Studios officials attending. “We painted the exterior of the building. It was a gray 1101 E. 54th Street ste F [OO25] cinderblock building. Some people (317) 259-4308 didn’t know it existed as a bakery. We bliceedwards.com painted the exterior with colorful and enormous doughnuts and signature pastries,” Chris mentioned. A link can be seen at: on.fb.me/1cDVkV0 Another recent project is at a nearby historic college campus. “Inside Robertson Hall, we painted a 2,400 square foot panoramic mural with buildings of Butler University’s campus, including the Holcomb Observatory, Clowes Hall and five other iconic structures,” Chris described. They also redid all of the walls and ceiling in the parlor room at the Morris-Butler House at 1204 North Park Avenue. A local landmark is a vintage Quaker Oats advertisement from the early 1900s they painted that appears on Angie’s List building in the 700 block of East Washington Street. Several other ghost signs were also recreated on the same alley wall. Recently restored, the Duesenberg Motors Company sign appears on the IndyGo facility at Harding and West Washington Street. The Indiana Automotive Historical Society and IndyGo’s unveiling of the Duesenberg ghost sign restoration occurred on Tuesday, November 19th. This was IAHS’ kick-off event for their program that

In 2000, we moved our studio to a home in Meridian Hills in the large RV garage that was previously attached. In 2011, we needed to get out of the house and into south Broad Ripple, where we previously created two more landmark projects, Good Morning Mama’s restaurant and Posh Petals flower shop,” Jon mentioned. These projects create an artistic gateway to their studio, located at 1101 East 54th Street, Suite F., next to Reese Kitchens, formerly Thorpe Awnings Co. Chris said, “I went to pastry school and was initially going to open a bakery, but we decided to move our business here instead. It took about a year and a half to clean out

and rebuild the interior.” Techniques they have mastered include “Trompe l’oeil.” Murals painted in this style are a French tradition that use illusion to create a three-dimensional look on a flat surface. “Marouflage” is another French term meaning to apply a painted canvas to a wall or other surface. “Murals and Specialty finishes can dramatically change the personality of a space,” Jon described. “Blice Edwards Art Experience at Studio 54” is a program that Chris and Jon started at their studio about six months ago. It provides opportunities for various groups to gather, drink, eat and create your own masterpiece under the direction of the studio. You bring your own wine or beverage and snack, the studio provides everything else, equipped with a kitchen, “home” -like, feel. Their Facebook page: on.fb.me/I3aDNK explains more. You can also visit their website, www.bliceedwards.com to learn more. They mentioned some additional recently completed projects. “We’ve just finished a job for the Indiana History Center. The You Are There exhibit recreates settings of old photographs. This particular exhibit is a recreation of a photographic studio from 1905 Fort Wayne. We helped with the black and white photo backdrops for the exhibit,” Jon noted. They also created a “welcome” mural at Two Cookin’ Sisters, located in Brookston, Indiana, located at the only stoplight in town at 210 Prairie Street. For the 50th anniversary of Clowes Memorial Hall on Butler University’s campus, Chris and Jon created two paintings of George and Edith Whitehall Clowes inspired by Spanish painter Salvador Dali’s image of Abraham Lincoln. They were pixelated images printed on canvas as a “Giclee,” then a gel medium that was brushed on to deepen the textures and values of the image, which can be seen more clearly from a distance. Reflecting on the rewards of their work, Jon said, “(It's) the impact that we create for our clients.” Chris added, “One of the things I hear the most from our clients is ‘You guys have exceeded our expectations’. Painting the exterior mural on Titus Bakery has increased the bakery’s business threefold. They have added a drive-up service to purchase doughnuts which remains busy throughout the day.” The moral of this story, according to Chris: “Hiring an artist can have a real emotional impact on your customers, resulting in the impact of your bottom line!”

Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for all of you loyal Broad Ripple Gazette readers. I am thankful for all of the venue owners that open their doors for live music. I am thankful for all of the service people that work whacky hours in those venues. I am thankful for all of the musicians who share their talents with us. Cranksgiving Indy 2013 Saturday, November 23 Indy Bike Hub YMCA 242 E. Market Street - 9:30 am to 1:00 pm, all-ages, $10
It feels weird for me not to be telling you about the Tonic Ball this year, but the Tonic Ball benefiting Second Helpings and held in Fountain Square is already sold out. If you’re not one of the 1600 people that already have tickets to the Friday, November 22 music extravaganza – or if you’re a hardy sort – this is the event for you. Cranksgiving is a combination casual bike ride, scavenger hunt and food drive all rolled up into one fun event benefitting Second Helpings. The ride starts from the historic Indianapolis City Market. Rider check-in opens at 9:30 AM, and the ride starts at 10:30. This is the second year for Cranskgiving in Indianapolis. Last year more than 30 Cranskgiving rides were held across the United States and the Indy ride was the third largest! Over 100 riders participated collecting 240 pounds of spices, condiments & pasta from grocery stores and 140 pounds of fresh produce from local urban farms. Cranksgiving is also a great way to see the city, participants will be given
locations of places in and around downtown Indianapolis where they will ride and gather food items that are carried back to the start/finish location and donated to Second Helpings. Locations are not announced until you arrive on-site and there is no predetermined route – or even an order in which you must visit the stops. Based on your knowledge of Indianapolis, riders will cover about 10-15 miles. However, it is left up to you to figure out the best route to the locations, purchase the food item specified and return to the start/finish area safely. Registration is $10 per rider and participants will likely spend another $5-10 during the ride purchasing food. All proceeds benefit Second Helpings. There is nothing better than talented singer-songwriters trading songs and stories. This is the tenth year for the hostel and they have been hosting music since the beginning and it’s always lovely. The vibe is welcoming and people are there to hear the music. In house concert tradition you can come early and enjoy a pitch-in dinner. Vegetarian chili will be available. Bring a snack or covered dish to share and your favorite beverage. Both Cara Jean Marcy’s record Goodnight Charlotte and Tim Grimm’s Heart Land are in constant rotation in my CD player. I’m looking forward to picking up a copy of Tim’s latest record The Turning Point. Chicago’s Heather Styka rounds out the trio of songwriters. I can’t wait!

Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

BR Kiwanis Club Installs New Officers
The award-winning Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club installed its newest officers and recognized its Kiwanian of the Year at the club’s annual meeting. Kyle Sanders, a financial consultant with Foresight Financial Management, was inducted as president for the club’s 20132014 year. The club also installed president-elect Brenda Rising-Moore, owner of Union Jack Pub; vice president Jen Wyrick, longtime club member; secretary Marlene Hatch, an independent management consultant; and treasurer Susie Neal, an independent real estate appraiser. Board members Deborah Stoll, deputy director of Midtown Indianapolis, Inc.; Lance Smith, owner of L.D. Smith Plumbing; Meghan Ogren, attorney at Ittenbach Johnson Koeller & Abrams, P.A.; Drew Brand, owner of Pak Mail; Helen Carroll, real estate agent with Sycamore Group; and Marianne Beck, community and civic volunteer, were also installed at the meeting. Immediate past president and longtime club member Fran Fickle will continue to provide her expertise by continuing to serve on the board for the club’s 2013-2014 year. For her service and commitment to the Kiwanis International mission of serving the children of the world, Jen Wyrick was awarded the club’s highest honor of Kiwanian of the Year. Wyrick has played an instrumental role in organizing the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club’s Pints for Half-Pints fundraising event that took place on Oct. 19 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Speak Easy, located at 5255 N. Winthrop Ave. All proceeds from this craft beer event will be donated to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs at Midtown IPS Schools 55 and 91. Charged with leading the club’s efforts to raise money for Midtown schools and Indianapolis non-profit organizations, newly elected president Kyle Sanders looks forward to seeing the club make an even bigger impact on children within the Broad Ripple community during the 2013-2014 year. Established in October 1987, the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Broad Ripple community. The club donated nearly $10,000 to local schools and Indianapolis non-profits during its 2012-2013 year. Carl Pomerance - 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3 - Atherton Union Reilly Room Talk: What We Still Don't Know About Addition and Multiplication How could there be something we don't know about arithmetic? It would seem that subject was sewn up in third grade. But here's a problem we don't know: What is the most efficient method for multiplication? Another: How many different numbers appear in a large multiplication table? Come hear about many more of these types of problems, plus some recent progress. Pomerance received his B.A. from Brown University in 1966 and his doctorate from Harvard University in 1972 under the direction of John Tate. During the period 1972-1999, he was a professor at the University of Georgia, with visiting positions at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Limoges, Bell Communications Research, and the Institute for Advanced Study. From 1999-2003, he was a member of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories. Currently he is the John G. Kemeny Parents Professor of Mathematics at Dartmouth College and Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Georgia. All lectures in the series are free and open to the public without tickets. I used to drink beer. Florida Spring Break meant Busch Light. (Yes- there was such a thing) Post college I put a lime in a Corona before it was the cool thing to do. When I lived and worked in Lafayette in the late 80's, the Knickerbocker offered up Watney's and Samuel Smith long before they became retail staples. Then I moved to Detroit where you could find plenty of old world German and Polish brews. When you crossed the river to Windsor there was an array of dramatically delicious Canadian ales to drink. And Ann Arbor had a fabulous bar that offered over 50 craft style beers most of them from the western US where craft beers were already creating a buzz, so to speak. When I moved back to Indianapolis, there was the Broad Ripple Brewpub. Heck, I even named my two late great doggy boyz after beer- Guinness and Harp. But somewhere along the way my palate preferred wine and it hasn't wanted to go back to beer. Until now. It's taken Indiana (and me) almost 20 years to catch up with the craft beer movement but it is doing so with a vengeance. There are now 75 microbreweries in the state with 35 more waiting to open. Beermaking and wine making are similar. Though I am starting to think that making beer is much more like baking bread or cakes. You can't just "double" a recipe and expect similar success. Wine making in that respect is much simpler. Grapes, yeast, GO. My first out-of-Indianapolis microbrew experience took place a few weeks ago in Hope, Indiana. I thought that was a good sign. I was right. Brother and sister Josh Bontrager and Jacquie Bontrager Carmen along with their spouses, Nicole and Abram Carman are taking their hobby and making it a profession. This is not an uncommon dream or theme among the Hoosier brew maker wanna be's. But more than likely, it is the recipe for failure. Not many home brewers really have the technique, patience and financial ability to make something they like to do into something they can actually make money doing. Tucked away off of SR 9, just south of Shelbyville and north of Columbus, is Hope, Indiana. And the infamous Haw Creek. The Bontragers say the secret to their beer is the water. Makes sense. Water is a KEY ingredient in beer making. And as I am learning, the water we drink on a daily basis helps our own palates like or dislike the beverages we drink. Especially beer. Haw Creek water is fresh and minerally. The brewers had it checked to meet safety guidelines but they don't remove or add anything to it. Other than their "recipe" ingredients. That means hops, barley, malts, etc. The results are refreshing. The tasting room is a simple warehouse/garage. Well kept and cheerfully appointed. It's small but production is small as it should be. Eight styles on the tasting list. The brewers are more interested in creating quality product than quantity. That means maybe only a batch or two of a style. So you have to get it while they've got it. Right now you can bring or buy a growler to go. Or just come to the tasting room and buy a glass to sit, sip and savor. Down the road the foursome hopes to quit their full time jobs and make Hawcreek Brewing Company their one and only business. I hope they can do so as they are off to a good start. Beers tasted: Four Founders Wheat–notes of almond nuttiness on the nose and palate, light, clean, very dry finish Chaos IPA–pronounced and perky nose and notes of white grapefruit and lime. Fun! Doghouse Pale Ale–Josh and Abram say this was the first beer the two made at home and today's recipe hasn't changed much. Malty with hints of cocoa on the finish. Our robotics teams competed in the City of Indianapolis Vex Robotics Competition last weekend. The Middle School team placed 16th out of 40 teams and the High School placed 31 out of 48. The High School team received the Energy Award for Spirit. We were the only school to have our mascot there. Thanks Rocky!! And well done, teams!

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 9 in the middle section of the top row which contains 3-4-5. The 9 in the left section of the top row eliminates the 3 spaces in the row below the 4-3-5. The 9 in the center section of the puzzle eliminates the two spaces below the 3. The 9 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the two spaces below the 5. Saturday, November 9th over 23 bicyclists left the Bike Hub at 242 E. Market on the Mayor's Birthday ride. The cyclists led by Mayor Greg Ballard and Spencer Moore, father of the late Officer David S. Moore, worked it's way along the Cultural Trail to the Monon Trail and on to Broad Ripple where they were hosted to lunch by Bobby and Jonathan Plump at Plump's Last Shot at 11am. I asked Mayor Ballard how many birthdays he's had, to which he answered "not enough". Actually he will turn 59 on November 20th. The weather was perfect for a ride and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it.

There’s a lot of news in the Ripple: Home safety tips, new IMPD interactive crime website unveiled Homes in the 7000 block of Spring Mill Road and the 800 block of 79th Street were the subject of horrific home invasion crimes recently. At the All Souls Unitarian Church community forum on crime prevention held on November 13, Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs announced that all 5 perpetrators had been arrested and jailed. “Those responsible are now

off the streets,” he continued. Riggs was surprised by how little jail time (for previous crimes) those involved in the home invasions had actually served and said that the city will urge legislative reforms to deal with the issue. Also, Riggs announced that IMPD has a new website, www.safetown.org or www.indy.safetown.org which will help citizens report such crimes and see where police and ambulance vehicles are at any given moment. You will also be able to take a picture on your cell phone and upload it to the site. Riggs gave some safety tips (known as “target hardening”) : • Don’t leave the garage door up. • Call the police if uncomfortable (i.e. you suspect something is out of order). • Start or join a Crime Watch group. www.indy.gov/crimewatch for more info. • You never have to answer your door. If you are not expecting anyone, don’t answer, especially late at night or early in the morning. • Keep your blinds closed, while you are asleep or gone. • Keep your house well lit at night. Citizens Energy also suggested that reducing air leaks could cut as much as 10 percent from an average household's monthly energy bill. Customers can seal leaks around doors, windows, and other openings such as pipes or ducts, with caulk or weather-stripping. They also recommend keeping warm air in by closing vents in unused rooms and by closing fireplace dampers. On sunny days, open draperies and blinds to let sunlight in; close them at night to insulate against cold, outside air. Holliday Park capital campaign on target, new Rivi photo club exhibit opens The capital campaign to renovate the ruins and exhibit hall (plus add a new rain garden and a walled border garden) has raised $2.6 million, just short of the $3.2 million goal according to Lisa Hurst of the Friends of Holliday Park, who is a co-chair of the fundraising campaign. Be aware that a new 20 mph speed limit applies from 96th Street to 146th Street in Carmel. Speeders will get fines. • Paving of the Fall Creek Bike Trail extension east of the Monon Trail looks almost done. • Work continues on the new trail along College near Marrott Park at 75th Street. • Check out the new trail east of Keystone at 62nd Avenue. It goes all the way east to Allisonville Road. You can almost ride to Costco from Broad Ripple on the new trail. • Sadly, a white bicycle has been placed on the Monon Trail at 75th and College indicating the possible death or injury of a of a cyclist. Take Amtrak to Chicago and D.C. for the Holidays Leaving Indy for Thanksgiving or Christmas? Tired of high air fares and cumbersome TSA regulations or standing on Washington Street waiting for the bus? Try Amtrak instead. The Amtrak Cardinal train goes to Chicago and also to Washington, D.C. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter High Time for Pie Move over cakes, cookies, cupcakes, and candy—it’s time for pie. Yes, nothing says dessert in this season more than a pie. Thanksgiving is the time when pies take center stage—pumpkin, sweet potato, pecan, mincemeat, apple or any other seasonal-harvested fruit. Add a lattice or crumb top, ice cream or whipped cream, and you have the perfect finale for a feast. Thankfully, I am a pie baker and my mother was a pie baker extraordinaire. Although she could turn out a fantastic chocolate fudge cake and 20+ varieties of Christmas cookies with recipes originating from Germany and Sweden, she was really known for her pies. Her trick was making pie crusts in quantity and freezing them. She thought freezing made pie shells flakier, and they always were. Her cold, fresh strawberry and lemon meringue pies were to die for. I have used my pie baking skills to contribute sweet endings to pitch-ins, comfort grieving families, grace neighborhood gatherings, and crown many a Thanksgiving meal. Pies are not only central to my family life but also hold a key place in our culture. The three little kittens, Georgy Porgy, Simple Simon, and 4 and 20 blackbirds are a few of the nursery rhymes that introduced me and a trove of other children to the delights of pie. Be they sweet or savory meat pies, these special concoctions can bring smiles at any table. Think about the scrumptious variety: apple, blueberry, cranberry, cherry, strawberry, peach, boysenberry, raspberry, gooseberry, rhubarb, pecan, pumpkin, sugar cream, custard, lemon meringue, banana cream, key lime, French silk, chocolate, butterscotch, peanut butter, mincemeat, rum raisin; quiche, chicken pot pie, turkey and beef too. Doesn’t the array just make your mouth water? Each one’s a winner! I have streamlined my pie baking. My simplifying shortcut (don’t tell anyone) is Pillsbury pie crust. Having listened to my sister’s unending search for the best pie crust recipe (she has experimented with scores, always seeking one that’s better and easier), I decided to go for convenience. My timesaver also yields consistently good results. For apple pies, I prefer to use at least three varieties of apples, sometimes adding cranberries, nuts, or raisins. My mother’s other tip: serve a pie within four hours so the crust doesn’t get soggy. She never baked a pie the day before. Did you know there is an American Pie Council? You can check it out online. The Council has competitions and recipes. The 2012 champion was a Strawberry Kiwi Green Tea Pie. National Pie Day occurs each January 23, not to be confused with Pi Day that happens to be March 14. Our Indiana State Fair also invites contestants to show their pie talents and creativity. Winning the blue ribbon is truly a mark of accomplishment. I was thrilled when a friend won a ribbon for a Green Tomato Pie. That year my entry was a Carmel Apple Pie. Through the years, pie has become "the most traditional American dessert.” It is so much a part of our country’s culture that we commonly use the expression "as American as apple pie." Pie is one of the most comforting symbols of thanks, so baking one or two or even three could make this Thanksgiving memorable. Seize the moment before it’s time to begin baking those Christmas cookies. Bake a pie!

Below is an article written by my friend Holly Hodges who has, in the past 18 months, lost 80 pounds in a very healthy and sustainable fashion. I wanted to share her story with you as I find it very inspiring and I hope you will too!!
IN 1946 AND 1947 SANTA CLAUS ARRIVED IN BROAD RIPPLE ON THE TRAIN.
In January 2012 I had just turned 33, and my self-esteem was at rock bottom. I was about to go up another clothing size, and to make matters worse, I dreaded my once beloved hobby of clothes shopping. My husband requested my use of breathing strips to minimize my snoring. I had no energy. My cholesterol level was too high to get a health insurance discount through my employer. When someone took a picture of me, I thought, “This doesn’t look like me!” One day I happened upon an article in a fitness magazine. Normal people shared their success stories. Their messages were consistent: don’t wait for a miracle solution. Commit to 21 days of building a new habit: exercise. This habit is pivotal, because it leads to healthier eating, better sleep, and more energy to do other things. I was inspired by the honesty in these testimonies and strategized with my doctors. My success plan was to track my food and exercise activity every day using a phone app. I set a goal to exercise 60 minutes per day, five days a week. The workout time was scheduled on my calendar, so I would plan around it for all the other things that evening. I still enjoyed all the exciting life events along the way: birthdays, vacations, weddings, parties, comfort food nights. After six month of doing cardio at the gym and walking our dog, I was ready to move to the next level by adding resistance training. My co-worker and I signed up with a personal trainer. We were nine years and eight clothing sizes apart, but our commitment level was the same. We tried different classes to supplement our trainer workouts. There are so many types and styles of exercise that I truly believe there is something for everyone, and also a trainer to fit every personality. Finding what worked for me was the key to my success. The past two years have been an emotional journey for me. Until January 2012, I had fallen in the category of yo-yo dieter. I would try the latest fad diet, get results, and gain all the weight back as soon as I returned to my normal, unhealthy habits. A dietitian advised me to ask myself these two questions every time I was about to dive head-first into that carton of ice cream: “Why am I about to eat this? If I eat this, will it make me happy?” These binge eating habits had been formed when I was growing up in my parents’ house. They were very restrictive; consequently, I felt I had to sneak the sweet treats when they were absent. This habit continued well after my 18 years under their roof. When I would implement a fad diet, my underlying motivation would be to make myself more attractive, thus gaining approval from my parents, single guys, and society in general. This time, it’s different. I am doing this for my own well-being, not for the approval of others. It is the true key to my success. When people ask me how I have achieved my goals, they are disappointed to hear I haven’t discovered a fad diet or miracle pill. I tell them my boring old story of losing 80 pounds and going down four clothing sizes in 18 months. I don’t snore. My cholesterol levels are healthy. I have energy and endurance. If I had done anything more extreme, I wouldn’t be sticking with it almost two years later. I have a lot of pictures of myself in 2013. I found myself under all that fat and unused muscle, and have definitely “worked out” of my shell. If I can do it, anyone can…it’s never too late!!

We recently learned about some exciting updates to the mixed-use parking structure facility. The garage now has surveillance cameras at all pedestrian entrances and exits and emergency call boxes at each floor lobby. IMPD has been moving furniture into their substation and will be operational very soon. We are also excited to share that two new tenants will be opening their doors soon – Orange Leaf and Massage Envy Spa. Passersby should also note the addition of planter boxes adding to the attractiveness of the area.
Current Activities in Broad Ripple Village Cornell Avenue Reverse Angle Parking
The streetscape improvements are complete along Cornell Ave! Much gratitude to the City for their partnership and to businesses and visitors who were patient during the construction process. It’s back to business as usual – or, almost. Part of the improvements included the expansion and reconfiguration of parking along Cornell Ave. The parking is now REVERSE ANGLE parking. How does it work? Just like parallel parking: 1. Signal a right turn to warn other drivers. 2. Pull past the parking spot and stop. 3. Reverse into the parking spot. What are the benefits of reverse angle parking? 1. Improved visibility and increased field of vision. When leaving the parking space, motorists are able to see oncoming traffic. 2. Decreased number of collisions. Motorists no longer have to back out blindly from their parking space. 3. Improved safety: - For children. Car doors open in a manner that directs children to the back of the vehicle, rather than the street. - For cyclists. As vehicles exit their parking stall, they are able to see cyclists in the roadway. 4. Improved loading and unloading. Volunteer with the BRVA, Give Back to the Community You Love
The BRVA relies on the talents of dozens of volunteers to complete our important work in the community. We offer a variety ways to get involved through committees. We especially need assistance with our beautification, public safety, and communication programs. We welcome you to join us in our efforts to improve the Village! Welcome new BRVA Board Members
The BRVA would like to thank everyone who participated in the 2013 election for the Board of Directors at our annual meeting on October 15. We welcome the following newly elected members to the Board: Aletha Dunston, Jim Holland, Elizabeth Marshall, Kent Springer, and Mark Wolf. Their three-year terms of office begin on January 1, 2014. The BRVA Board will continue to provide guidance, oversight, and hands-on expertise in all facets of our organization, while working to maintain and enhance the livability and desirability of Broad Ripple as a premier neighborhood and cultural district within Indianapolis.
Public Safety Stats Show Improvement
The BRVA works closely with IMPD to develop strategies to ensure Broad Ripple continues to be a safe place for residents, businesses, and visitors. We are happy to announce that the stats we received recently show significant improvement. These are year-to-date figures. Robbery is down in Broad Ripple just over 26% compared to last year. Violent crime is down 32.26%. Property crime is down overall compared to last year, at just over 6.5%, with residential burglaries being cut in half.
