BRMHS Principal Mike Akers By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Broad Ripple High School has been part of the local community since opening in 1886 when seven students were enrolled. (The editor's great grandfather graduated around 1897). The school joined the Indianapolis Public Schools system in 1923 when the town of Broad Ripple was annexed into Indianapolis. It is currently named Broad Ripple Magnet High School. BRMHS Principal John Akers’ career has come full circle in his return to the school. (Then IPS Superintendent) “Dr. Eugene White said, ‘We’re going to make you Principal of Broad Ripple High School.’ Had he given me the choice of any school, I would have picked Broad Ripple. I was really glad that he showed the faith and confidence in me to do the job because it was like coming home where I started my career as a student teacher,” he recalled. Akers described his educational background: “I have a Bachelor’s degree from Indiana University in Secondary Education (English) and a Master’s degree from Butler University’s School of Administration and Supervision Experiential Program for Preparing School Principals (EPPSP). Many IPS principals have completed this curriculum.” “I began as a student teacher at Broad Ripple in 1997. My supervising teacher retired in December of 1997 and Jim Ray, the English department head, called and asked me if I wanted to take over. The rest is history. I then went to George Washington Community School in July of 2002 where I was the head football coach for the next four years. After receiving my graduate degree, I began an administration career as Academic Dean at Arlington High School for two years, then as Vice Principal at Emma Donnan Middle School for one year and later as Vice Principal Broad Ripple Magnet at Thomas Carr Howe Community High School School for three years. Dr. Eugene White named me to become principal 1115 Broad Ripple Ave [H9 on map] at Broad Ripple in March of 2012. I (317) 693-5708 am currently in my second year,” he 417.ips.k12.in.us added. www.brhsalumni.org Akers mentioned his short- and long-term goals for BRMHS: “Really, they all develop into long-term goals, but have to start as short-term. Develop teacher leaders. Show annual student growth on testing, not just simply passing a test. Pushing those who are proficient on end-of-course exams through more rigorous course work. Strengthen the Humanities program to attract local families and become a model performing/visual arts/media careers school.” The Center for Performing & Visual Arts was created within BRHS in 1976 as an inaugural magnet program with the Center for Humanities that followed in 1978. Each of these Magnet curriculums offers students specialized college preparatory and individual instruction. Many arts events are scheduled throughout the year with recent Nutcracker musical

The mural The Gateway is by artist Michelle Carollo.

Several pieces were submitted to a jury composed of local neighborhood associations, Keystone Realty Group, CICF, Butler, and the Art Center. This mural will be the first part of the new Art 2 Art project, "An Arts & Recreational Trail connecting the Indianapolis Museum of Art to the Indianapolis Art Center utilizing the Central Canal Towpath and the Monon Trail." Several art projects are planned along this trail. Also unveiled was the new Art 2 Art Trail wayfinding sign. Above: Mayor Ballard and Michael Patarino unveiled the mural. performances in BRMHS’ Gene R. Poston auditorium on December 5th. Gene R. Poston became the school’s Director of Choral Activities in 1954. In 1960, he was appointed Chairman of the Music Department and Director of Productions. He moved on to become Director of Choral Activities at Ball State University in 1980 and retired in 1982. In 2007, BRHS Golden Singers alumni established the Gene R. Poston Legacy Foundation to enhance music education and commemorate his impact on students. In August of 2011, the Indianapolis School Board voted unanimously to rename the school’s auditorium in his honor. BRHS’ history can be read at: http://417.ips.k12.in.us/category/broad-ripple-high-school-history/. Reflecting on the rewards of being a lifelong educator, Akers said, “I don't think I can point to one specific thing. Many of our kids (BRMHS and Indianapolis Public Schools) come from less than desirable home environments. Some come from very solid home environments. Regardless of where they come from, they really do want to succeed. They want to make those of us whose lives they touch proud of them. The thing is, they don't need to do anything special to make me proud of them. I am proud of them when they do things no one believes they can do. I am proud of them when I see them helping a fellow classmate. I am proud of them for when they admit they did not give their all. I am proud of them for recognizing they can always be better. I can't see myself doing anything else anywhere else, but with the students and families of IPS.” Distinguished BRHS alumni include architect Michael Graves (IAC, Thomson headquarters Indy, Disney Dolphin and Swan hotels, etc.), former Marion County Prosecutor and Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, late night talk show host David Letterman, Civil Rights Attorney Judith Kammin Albietz, Finish Line CEO Alan H. Cohen, attorney Marilyn (Tucker) Quayle, actor and partner at Brugge Brasserie Abe Benrubi, former NFL defensive end and Purdue University AllAmerican football player Rosevelt Colvin and his wife, Tiffany, owner of SweeTies, Indiana Pacers guard George Hill, Broad Ripple Gazette publisher Alan Hague and his son, John, who is assistant band director. Each of them and countless others not mentioned here continue to make a lasting impact in the communities where they live and work. BRMHS Principal Mike Akers is currently writing his own chapter in the school’s history as he and the school personnel help prepare students for tomorrow. BRHS was renamed BRMHS. In this article I used the new name for current references and BRHS for historic references. - Alan

Where to Shop for Music?

Purchasing music for other people can feel like a daunting task, but totally worth the effort. I love introducing friends and family to new artists and music. We are lucky enough to have three independent record stores in our area – Indy CD & Vinyl, Vibes, and LUNA Music. Don’t be nervous about walking in to any of them. The folks that work at all three stores are super helpful and love to share their music knowledge. Tell them about the person you’re shopping for and they can point you in the right direction. The stores have listening stations so you can hear bit of featured records. And yes, they all sell actual albums – new and used – as well as CDs, accessories, and other cool gift ideas. And if you find choosing music for someone to be too much pressure, they all sell gift certificates. Happy shopping!

Bill Brink Memorial Garden Open House and Photography Show Saturday, December 14 Perk Up Café 6536 N. Cornell Avenue all-ages, free, 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM

You probably knew Bill Brink, even if you didn’t realize it. He was a dashing man with his cowboy hat and charming smile. He could often be found at Perk Up Café, Plumps, Aristocrat, The Jazz Kitchen, or Marigold on Broad Ripple Gallery Tour nights. He looked the part of the authentic naturalist and great outdoorsman that he was. I realize that I never saw him with a camera in his hand, but I wasn’t traveling the wilds of our country in the deep snow with him. He was made of

stronger stuff than most of us. Bill was a thoughtful photographer. He had the patience to wait for the perfect shot and the grace under pressure to be in the wild and not to run when a herd of buffalo unexpectedly crossed his path out West. He has captured some of my favorite nature scenes in both far-flung National Parks and in Broad Ripple. Bill died unexpectedly in 2011. The Bill Brink Memorial Garden has been created in his honor. Work on the landscaped linear garden will run alongside the Monon Trail, east of Cornell Avenue from 65th to 67th Streets has already started. It will reflect Bill’s passion for the great outdoors, native Indiana plants, wildlife, art and Broad Ripple Village. The park will feature plantings, lighting, public art, and benches. Bill’s stunning photography will be on display through January 12th and available for purchase. A photograph would be a great holiday gift to yourself or someone on your list. To donate funds or volunteer for the project visit brva.org or you can mail a contribution to Broad Ripple Village Association, 6311 E. Westfield Blvd, suite 101, Indianapolis, IN 46220 (check payable to: Broad Ripple Alliance for Progress).

Steve Poltz Thursday, December 19 Sabbatical 921 Broad Ripple Avenue 21+, Doors 7:00 PM, show 8:30 PM, $12

I’m not sure what there is to write about Steve Poltz that I haven’t said before, except that I’m always amazed and highly entertained. He’s playing a dinnertheater style show at Sabbatical and I can’t wait. Expect original music, stories, and gobs of laughter. Steve hails from Southern California and is one of the most beloved songwriters that I know of. He was part of the cult legend band, The Rugburns, and has created a solo career that spans genres and generations. I make it a point to never miss one of his shows, and you shouldn’t either. I suggest buying a ticket ahead of time. Visit sabbaticalindy.com for more details. I’ll see you there. -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

If you are a wine lover, there is nothing worse than holding on to a bottle for too long. A bottle that you just know is going to be delicious but instead of DRINKING it, you hold it. You tuck it away in the closet/cellar/box waiting for the perfect night to drink it. You see it all of the time. Every time you go to take a bottle from your stash you pick it up and think, is tonite the night? And then you think, nah, I need to share it. I will save it. So it sits. And sits. And sits. Then you finally open it and UGH, it has gone bad. I have a bad habit of holding wine. Wait. Make that..I HAD a bad habit of holding wine. Recently I discovered a vertical (multiple vintage years) of Davis-Bynum Pinot Noir from California. Back in the day this winery turned out some delectable bottles that would age well. Then years passed, owners changed and though the wines being produced are still noteworthy they aren't made to age as they had in a previous lifetime. SO I invited a few wine friends over, we prepared some food to complement, and got busy tasting. And enjoying. We also had an interesting conversation as we tasted. About flood insurance in Broad Ripple. My friends and I all live in "the flood plain". We knew it when we bought our homes dozens of years ago. The ability to walk along the river, enjoy the trees, the birds and the numerous animals that lived there was worth the price. Then in 2002 the Army Corps of Engineers decided they needed to build a flood wall. They promised by 2006 we would be "out of the flood plain" and thus no more flood insurance. We really had no choice. The government was going to do what the government was going to do. We lobbied to save as many trees as possible and endured several years of mess, noise, and loss of access to the river. When it was done, we did our best to embrace the new landscape. And hope that the government could convince the other neighborhoods along the river to approve the flood wall so everyone could be removed from the fee. It's 2013 and we still pay flood insurance. In fact, our rates are increasing because FEMA needs to make more money due to a series of natural disasters in which the government fumbled its response, particularly Hurricane Katrina. You can't get a mortgage in a flood plain without flood insurance. And now if you sell your home, the new buyers will be saddled with flood insurance rates that are almost triple what most of us are paying. What to do? Lower the selling price of our homes so someone could pay cash for it? Lobby our congressmen and women to delay the rate increase? Wait and hope it improves? Today I crawled over the wall and sat by the river. I spotted a blue heron and enjoyed the trees. The next plan from FEMA includes cutting down all of the trees and thus leaving the bats, birds, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, rabbits, possums and other assorted natural inhabitants homeless. I raised a glass tonight for the river and its friends. And planned another night for my friends and a couple bottles of wine. 2008 Davis-Bynum Russian River Valley, Sonoma County–earthy, spicy, aromas and subtle flavors of dark cherries, wild strawberries–smooth finish with subtle hint of pepper 2009 Davis-Bynum Russian River Valley, Sonoma County–smoky nose- oakstill young- soft hints of cocoa on the nose–not quite ready but bettered as it opened–subtle flavors of cola, cherry. 2010 Davis-Bynum Russian River Valley, Sonoma County–earthy, spicy nose–smooth flavors of cola, wild strawberries, black cherries, smooth finishhint of caramel. 2011 Davis-Bynum Russian River Valley, Sonoma County, "Jane's Vineyard"– inviting nose and flavors of cola, currant, wild strawberry, pomegranate, subtle earthy truffle notes.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the middle section of the puzzle which contains 1-3-7-9. The 8 in the center section of the top row eliminates the 2 spaces above the 9. The 8 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the two spaces below the 1. The only place left is the center-most square of the puzzle. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Claire Fox voiced her opposition to the razing of two bungalows on College before a standing-room-only crowd at the November zoning meeting.

The 2nd emotion-charged zoning meeting of 2013 By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The room at the Broad Ripple Park family center was standing-room-only for the November meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development (LUD) committee. More than 60 people were in attendance. There were 5 items on the agenda. LUD committee chair Jim Holland called the meeting to order around 6pm. 1) 5915 and 5925 College Avenue [KK23 on map] petition #2013-CZN-821 / 2013-CVR-821 - The Reliant Building. This petition for rezoning has been heard before at the BRVA LUD meetings. The petitioners took the feedback they received and made many substantial changes to the proposal and presented those changes at the November meeting. The majority of the audience was at the meeting to either support or oppose this petition. Participants on all sides of this issue got very emotional and out of control at various times throughout the presentation. This proposal is to rezone the two properties north of the old Fox Glass building at the corner of College and Kessler. They are currently zoned residential. The request is to rezone from D5 to C3C. "The C-3C (Commercial Corridor) District, like the C-3 (Neighborhood Commercial) District, is designed for those professional offices and commercial businesses which typically do not draw customers from beyond their respective neighborhood boundaries. Examples of such types of uses include sales of retail convenience or durable goods, shopping establishments, and personal and professional service establishments. It is planned, therefore, for use in older urban commercial areas, which are located adjacent to established residential neighborhoods on select segments of primary and secondary thoroughfares. Characterized by small-scale commercial buildings abutting the pedestrian walkway and vehicular traffic, these areas often suffer from limited availability of off-street parking. In addition, certain redevelopment areas and infill projects can be suitably located in a C-3C District. To encourage the optimal utilization of these types of commercial areas, residential units are permitted in commercial buildings. This feature and the location of this district within walking distance to residential districts dictate that selected types of offices and other commercial uses which do not generate substantial vehicular traffic locate in the C-3C District. In order to perform its buffering function, floor areas are restricted, screening with fences, walls or landscaping is required and other similar amenities are necessary for optimum compatibility of this district with the adjacent residential development."

This rezoning will allow the bungalows on the properties to be razed and a small office building to be built. The petitioners made a commitment to restrict the uses to daytime retail, not allowing evening restaurant/bar uses. Since the last presentation before the LUD committee the building size has been reduced from a 3-story 7000 sq ft building to 2-story 5700 sq ft. Other changes involve blending the new structure into the neighborhood by matching the front lawn with the residences to the north and matching the facade lines of the commercial building to the south. The petitioner explained that this rezoning would mimic the commercial space

on the west side of College currently occupied by Binkley's and Fine Estate Rugs and the spot where Ubër was before moving into the Fox Glass building. This argument was to alleviate the concern of "commercial creep", emphasizing that this is not a mid-block commercial building project in a residential block, but extending an existing commercial corner to match the commercial corner across the street. Several residents and nearby property owners spoke against this project. The main arguments were: - they had purchased their properties with the understanding that the zoning would protect their properties by keeping the majority of the block residential - that the generally accepted commercial plan for Broad Ripple is to reuse homes as businesses without tearing them down - only asking for a temporary zoning variance from residential to commercial, rather than a permanent rezoning to commercial - if this rezoning to commercial is approved, it is likely that every home up and down College will soon be purchased, torn down, and rebuilt as commercial. After about an hour and a half of letting all interested parties speak, there was a motion for support of the petition, then a vote of 10 for, 1 against. I think it is worth mentioning here that the LUD committee votes to support, oppose, or take no stand for a proposal. That position has no legal authority, but merely affects how the BRVA might participate at the actual zoning hearing at the City-County Building. The approval/disapproval of each zoning petition comes from the City of Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission. That ruling takes into account the MDC staff recommendations, the desires of neighborhood associations, and the testimony of residents attending the hearing.

A rendering by the petitioner showing the scale of the proposed building on the left and the existing Ambrosia/Haus Love building on the right.

2) Indy Hostel, 49th and Winthrop Avenue [QQ25 on map], appeared next with an information-only presentation about a rezoning to legally establish the expansion of the hostel that occurred in 2007. The hostel is seeking letters of support from the nearby neighborhood associations. The LUD committee agreed to submit a letter. 3) The Red Room, 6335 Guilford Avenue [G5 on map], appeared next to ask for input on a proposal to expand the restaurant to the outdoor space above the building next door, currently Lucky B. The comments were that it sounded like a good addition to this specific restaurant on this section of Westfield Boulevard, but could set an undesirable precedent making it difficult to limit other bars in Broad Ripple from requesting rooftop seating. 4) Martin Dentistry, 1724 Broad Ripple Avenue [HH29 on map], appeared next with a proposal to purchase the home to the east of the Broad Ripple Masonic Lodge on Broad Ripple Avenue, raze it and build a new building for Martin Dentistry. The proposal calls for a 3000 sq ft building that would have a bungalow style with a pitched roof. The LUD committee voted to support this petition. 5) Sangrita, 834 E. 64th Street [D4 on map], was the final item on the agenda. It was another information-only presentation. The proposal is to completely renovate the old Greek’s Pizzeria building on 64th Street for a new restaurant Sangrita. The committee commented that it will be important to the neighborhood for Sangrita to be a family restaurant, instead of an over-21 bar. There is no December meeting of the LUD committee. The next scheduled meeting is Tuesday, January 28, 2014 at 6pm at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center.

Uninsured? Enroll for health insurance by December 23 Do you lack health insurance? Enroll by December 23 to start your Affordable Care Act health insurance coverage by January 1. Premiums may be free or very low cost depending on your income. To enroll in the Health Exchange Marketplace, call 800/318-2596 or go to www. healthcare.gov. Given the problems with the website, it may be quicker to print off the application and mail it in or enroll over the phone. But hurry. Coverage starts January 1 if you apply by December 23. Also, don’t renew your current individual policy before January 1 as such policies may legally still allow exclusions for pre-existing conditions, onerous out of pocket maximums, strict coverage limits, as well as lifetime maximum caps all of which will become illegal as of January 1. Don’t risk it by going without health insurance. Not only will you pay a penalty on your tax return but you really need such insurance. by

One Book, Two Cities: “Vienna” by Eva Menasse

Indianapolis readers are invited to join those in Cologne, Germany for “One Book, Two Cities,” a first-of-its-kind shared reading campaign that continues through February 2014 as part of the Sister City relationship between the two international cities. Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard was joined by Indianapolis Public Library representatives and project supporters at Central Library on December 3 to announce the “One Book” title – Vienna by Eva Menasse. The freelance author from Berlin, Germany provided greetings via Skype during the ceremony, as did representatives of the Cologne Public Library. The novel is a fictional account of a part-Jewish Viennese family negotiating the trials brought forth by the Nazi invasion and subsequent aftermath as family members become scattered throughout Europe and North America. First published in 2005 and translated in English by Anthea Bell in 2007, Vienna received the Corine Award for Best Debut novel. Born in Vienna in 1970, Menasse was recently awarded the esteemed Heinrich Böll Prize by the City of Cologne for outstanding achievement in German literature. Free copies of Vienna are available for pick-up at all Indy Library locations. In addition to scheduled Library book discussions led by trained facilitators, local residents are encouraged to organize their own book clubs and discuss the book among co-workers, friends, family and neighbors. Specially-created discussion kits are available as a guide to help book groups get started and provide discussion ideas for Vienna. The Sister City blog site, accessed from the Library’s homepage at www.indypl.org, allows participants in Indianapolis and Cologne to share thoughts and submit photos of their discussion experiences. A number of other free Library events related to Vienna are planned in conjunction with “One Book, Two Cities.” Joshua Taylor, host of the “Genealogy Roadshow” (PBS) and “Who Do You Think You Are” (NBC and TLC) and lead genealogist for Findmypast.com, will present a program entitled, “Finding the Roots of Your Family Legends” on Sunday, January 5 at 2 p.m. at Central Library. Other programs presented at various Indy Library locations include, “Writing Your Family Story,” “Preserving Family Photographs: From

Daguerreotype to Digital,” and “Using Sanborn Maps to Research Family Genealogy.” “One Book, Two Cities” is made possible through generous support from BMO Harris Bank and The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund. www.indypl.org.

Butler receives $2.9M grant to create a new kind of Science Museum

The Center for Urban Ecology at Butler University has been awarded a four-year, $2.9 million National Science Foundation grant to create sites along six Indianapolis waterways where arts and science will be used to educate the public about Indianapolis’s water system. “We’re creating the first science museum in Indianapolis, but it will not be a building,” said Tim Carter, director of the Center for Urban Ecology (CUE). “Instead, we’re using the city itself as a learning environment and focusing on six waterways and the adjacent neighborhoods.” The six waterways are the White River, Fall Creek, Central Canal, Eagle Creek, Pleasant Run, and Pogue’s Run, all located in priority areas identified by the neighborhoods through the Reconnecting to Our Waterways (ROW) initiative (ourwaterways.org). By spring 2015, the six Indianapolis/City as Living Laboratory sites will be established at destinations along these waterways. These locations, which will have activities such as dance, music, and poetry that will interpret scientific content, build on previous projects developed in Indianapolis and New York City by Mary Miss Studio. There will be opportunities for community members to engage with work built by collaborations between artists and scientists. In addition, the project will be accessible virtually through a site-specific app for mobile devices and on the Internet so that temporary installations will have a life beyond the live performances. Funding will go to the artists, for installing sites, and also toward research and evaluation so that the lessons learned from this project can inform future installations in other places. Carter said the ultimate goal of this project is to help people to understand connections between their daily activities, the science of the city’s water system—where water comes and goes, where stormwater flows, what lives in the water—and scientific thinking in general. He hopes it will provoke the public to ask questions and test their prior knowledge about their surroundings, which could result in a new appreciation for the waterways as an asset in their neighborhoods.

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE BUILDING ON WESTFIELD BOULEVARD THAT IS NOW THE ROCKDALE BUILDING STARTED OUT IN THE EIGHTEEN HUNDREDS AS A BROAD RIPPLE HOTEL TO SERVICE VISITORS THAT ARRIVED BY TRAIN?

As I write this column it is the day after Thanksgiving, and I must say that this year has embodied the true meaning of this holiday for me more than any other in my life. Thanksgiving day, So.Be.Fit. hosted our 2nd annual “SoBe Turkey Trot” 5K and it was a smashing success. Last year was our first go at it and I pretty much threw it together about 2 weeks before. We had about 40 people attend, and everyone’s “registration fee” was to just bring a canned good for St. Vincent De Paul (where my parents volunteer and deliver food to the less fortunate). My friends that own the Pawn Shop Pub loaned us their air pots and my husband and I tirelessly brewed coffee as our participants walked and ran around SoBro. When they returned they munched on the bagels that I had bought, and everyone really had a great experience. So I decided to make it a tradition, we use the Monon trail which is less than half a block from our front door and our course doesn’t intersect with the Drumstick Dash (which this year had a record 19,000 participants!). This year I was hoping to at least double the attendance, and get several of my trainers actively involved to help me pull it off. My trainer Karena suggested that we try to get food/coffee donations; which frankly had never occurred to me. She offered to take on the task to do so and I was happy to let her…I honestly thought she would be lucky to get these donations for such a small and off the radar event. OH my, was I mistaken!! In fact EVERY place she asked happily agreed to donate. Einstein’s donated bagels, and The Fresh Market gave us gobs of bananas. Ron Harris, owner of Locally Grown Gardens and our business neighbor donated a slew of apples. I was astounded and humbled by their generosity and it made me so proud with their lack of hesitation to give away their products for this good cause. However, what was the most selfless thing I have experienced in a long time was the graciousness of Jim and Rose White owners of Yogulatte (corner of 54th and College next to Twenty Tap). I have never met them before; yes, it was a holiday and they were supposed to be closed and not working. But that didn’t matter to them! Not only did they provide three large pots of coffee and hot cider (along with all of the cups, creamer, sweetener, etc.), but Jim even went over to Yogulatte during the run/walk to return with pumpkin frozen yogurt and other samples! And to top it off, they stayed the entire time picking up coffee cups and just mingling with their neighbors. Oh wait, and to boot they kept thanking ME. Really?! Their volunteering allowed me to actually run with my participants and not worry about anything. THEY are the ones to thank, clearly. More so, I was able to get door prizes from several local/small businesses which was very fun for the runners/walkers. Style Salon, Posh Petals, Pawn Shop Pub, Ceramic Dreams, massage therapists Karena Halman and Arty Clark, and So.Be. Fit. all offered promotions for those who came to give on Thanksgiving. In fact as I scroll back up through this article I see that in total 11 businesses were involved in celebrating this holiday with us…pretty awesome! So, what initially seemed as a challenging/stressful to organize event for me actually turned out to be such a pleasant and feel good experience, fueled by businesses in the local community. These are people helping people, who are helping people. In translation, the local donations were for those who are giving to help others. Oh and they also got in a great workout amongst friends and neighbors. This is truly a full circle positive situation where everyone wins (and hopefully the donors will gain business for their charitable efforts…I for one know where I am going for coffee this winter ) I cannot wait to hear the reaction of St. Vincent De Paul when my parents drop off the boxes and boxes of food; We didn’t tell them we were doing this for them. They feed over 3500 people a week, so the awesome Turkey Trotters are helping to feed so many of these people. As I said, this year it truly was about being thankful; not about a large meal (which don’t get me wrong I adore ). And just about all Thanksgiving day run/walks or any event that support a cause such as ours. If you have never experienced this, I urge you to give it a try. I assure you will not regret it; little to no money involved but oh so rich in the holiday spirit!

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Visions of Holiday Shopping We’re heading into the holiday season again! I have always enjoyed stockpiling gifts for family and friends. At the same time, I realize many people think gift shopping is nothing short of an ordeal. I’d like to suggest some ways to make it otherwise. We might take a clue from my brother to make gifting a little merrier. He has kind of a “one-size-fits-all” scheme for gifts. There was the year he thought glue guns would come in handy — and everyone received a glue gun, our mother, all siblings, and each of the next generation. Ten glue guns, and his shopping was done. This approach has its possibilities if you can hit on a idea with universal appeal. He’s succeeded with it time and again. One year The Gift was elaborate jar openers (especially handy for those with weak hands and wrists); another year it was fine chocolates. He always seems to be able to pull off the feat and win appreciation to boot. Come to think of it, my sister has followed suit. There was the year she knitted a cap for every family member and then presented them on top of inflated balloons. Each balloon had a face drawn on it to resemble the person receiving the cap. Voila, “a Kodak moment” was born, and we got a great family photo with everyone sporting his or her new, warm head topper. I, on the other hand, have a totally different tack. Picking up gifts is a year around pleasure for me, and I tend to do most of my shopping while traveling. It’s recreational. I think I find gifts that are more out of the ordinary in speciality shops and out-of-the-way spots. One of the added benefits is that I can tell fun stories about where things have come from thus reliving the glories of weekend expeditions and vacations. So let me throw out still another possibility for infusing holiday shopping with a sense of adventure.

How about declaring that all gifts be from Broad Ripple? Yes, make a requirement that everything you give must have a connection to our community. Let me offer some suggestions as inspiration: • An art class from the Indianapolis Art Center • Growler and add a red bow from Broad Ripple Brew Pub • For the child, adult, or octogenarian, a bike or tricycle from the Bike Line • A membership to the Broad Ripple Dog Park, a groom at Village Dog • A gift basket from Good Earth or Fresh Market • Tickets to a special show at the Jazz Kitchen or The Vogue • A starter savings account at one of the local banks…better than a piggy bank. • Gift cards for anything good to drink or eat at local restaurants • Baubles from Artifacts, G. Thrapp Jewelers, or Marigold • A wonderful painting from galleries of the area including Ashland, Hoosier Salon, and Eckert Fine Art I can’t end the suggestions without including possibilities on the fringes of Broad Ripple. Stop by the Veterans Antiquities' (46th and the Monon), Agrarian (for urban farming), pasta from Nicole-Taylor Pasta. I have to include Backyard Birds, offering birdseed, birdfeeders, and an array of garden items. To start or finish your gift buying with an “all things Broad Ripple” theme, pick up a current Broad Ripple Gazette, using its 4-page Map and Directory of Broad Ripple Village and surrounding area to aid this strategy. One last thought: don’t pass the temptation to stop for refreshments along the shopping trail. The gift giver deserves a treat too. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com. Email your bird questions to Brandt@BroadRippleGazette.com

SMALL BUSINESS SATURDAY

Small Business Saturday was November 30. Shoppers flocked to the Village for sales and specials and to support our great local businesses. Many holiday values were found at shops like The Bungalow (left) and Chelsea's (right). Each participating shop was marked by a SHOP SMALL doormat, like this one at Girly Chic Boutique.
