LIGHTS UP!
Hundreds lined up along Broad Ripple Avenue to watch the 5th annual Lights Up! Parade put on by the Broad Ripple Village Association. The snow stopped about an hour before the 5:30pm start time. I counted 23 parade entries, including the Broad Ripple Magnet High School marching band and Santa Claus. Before the parade families enjoyed food, music and activities at the firehouse. After the parade everyone congregated back at the firehouse for the lighting of the tree.

The seeds of Agrarian’s early success planted by Andrew Brake, Anne Collins and David Stuckert were the result of their shared interest in chicken farming and urban homesteading. Their store at 661 East 49th Street is the first of its kind in Indianapolis and was recently selected as the Best New Local Shop by Indianapolis Monthly Magazine. “The three of us founded this business to provide an in-town source for chicken farming supplies and more generally, urban homesteading supplies. Andrew is very involved in the urban chicken movement in Indianapolis and both he and Anne raise chickens at their homes in the Meridian-Kessler area. Anne is very familiar with the
urban homesteading movement and has selected a wonderful array of homesteading products and unique gifts that include locally handmade items and everything needed for homesteading activities like bee keeping, fermenting and maple sugaring, to name a few,” Stuckert stated. “I think people feel out of touch with where their food comes from,” says Ms. Collins. “Gardening and raising chickens are just two of the ways that people are getting back in touch with their food sources. They want to gain some kind of control in growing their own healthy choices, organically and reducing their reliance on big stores and manufactured food. Keeping chickens in an urban area is an easy thing to do because you don’t need a lot of space. Many people begin gardening and then move into keeping chickens; they go hand-in-hand. My grandmother lived in Columbia, South Carolina Agrarian and had always grown her own food and raised 661 East 49th St. chickens. I have a degree in psychology from the College of Charleston and worked in medical sales until I had my three children. They inspired me to look at life differently and that is why I started keeping chickens. I wanted to teach them where food comes from and that we directly affect our environment. I hope that Agrarian can inspire others as well,” she added. “Chickens are a terrific alternative form of composting. I was concerned about throwing out table scraps and instead gave them to my chickens. The obvious benefit of raising chickens is the eggs and knowing where they come from,” Brake said. “You give them table scraps and they give you food and fertilizer,” Stuckert

emphasized. Brake added,” There are two different kinds of chickens – egg-laying and meat birds. I raise egg-laying chickens - Leghorns that lay white eggs and Rhode Island Reds that lay brown eggs. You can also get Americana Chickens that lay beautiful blue eggs. The breed of chicken determines what color eggs they will lay, it’s genetic.” Brake continued, ”I’ve raised chickens in the city for a long time and developed a business called Naptown Chickens (www.naptownchickens.org) to provide complete chicken packages for homeowners and schools. The package includes the chicken coop, the chickens and all of the equipment and supplies that are needed to get started. The chicken packages for the schools are sponsored by local businesses so that the schools don’t have pay anything. Through the store we even offer the package on a trial basis for those who are not yet certain that they want to raise chickens.” “We decided to open our store at the corner of College and 49th Street because we knew that there is a high concentration of chicken farmers in the Broad Ripple area and, although there are also a good number of chicken farmers around Irvington and Fountain Square, we feel like it’s an up and coming corner,” Brake added. “We want our store to be a bricks and mortar alternative to the internet where customers can actually come in, look at our products, compare prices and talk to us. If we don’t know the answer, we have experts who can help. In urban homesteading, one may not have the ability to do everything, but we can help provide the tools and education to accomplish the task,” Stuckert added. Agrarian will hold workshops throughout the year on urban homesteading topics. In January and February, the workshops will cover chicken farming, composting, soap making, maple sugaring, seed starting and tree care. A December seminar on beekeeping was a huge success and another is now planned for January. Some other areas customers can learn about are rainwater harvesting, worm composting, canning and raised-bed gardening. Bright House Networks Expands WiFi Coverage in Broad Ripple - Free WiFi HotSpots Now Available Bright House Networks has announced that it has expanded Bright House Networks WiFi access to the Broad Ripple area. The company now offers 20 HotSpots throughout the Broad Ripple area. This initiative is part of the 150,000 Bright House Networks WiFi and Cable WiFi HotSpots that are available in major cities nationwide. Bright House Networks WiFi HotSpots are now available in the locations of College Avenue and Westfield Boulevard from 67th Street down to 62nd Street. This includes the majority of the commercial and entertainment areas, in addition to Broad Ripple High School’s football stadium. I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Chad Mills twice in the last few months. Once was planned, the second accidental – he happened to be playing at a fundraiser that I attended last weekend. Every single time I see him I’m blown away by his talent and his ability to win the crowd over. Whether he’s playing with the Upright Willies in a bar or solo in a room full of people seeming more interested in eating fancy food and drinking craft beer, Chad’s songs and voice always wins them over. The Upright Willies are big rock fun. The band includes William Rood (upright bass), Grover Parido (cello), Bob Stewart (percussion), and Chad playing stringed things and singing. The Stampede String Band is made up of a trio of banjo, guitar, and bass playin’ musicians singing beautiful harmonies. I look forward to hearing them in person! It is hard to hang a tag on the Innocent Boys. They’re a little bit rockabilly, a little bit bluegrass, and a lot of fun. Banjo, guitar, harmonica, accordion, bass, and harmonies all add up to a big sound.

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and works with several bands in IPS. I am currently the organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s and 1940’s. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the six Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other five districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

First Baptist Athletics announces new director
First Baptist Church of Indianapolis, 8600 N. College Ave., Indianapolis, announces Steven Carr as the new Director of First Baptist Athletics (FBA). Steve replaces George Robinson who retired December 15 after 24 years as FBA Director. Steve, an Indianapolis resident, is a 2005 graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in social work. He brings experience in youth sports, urban Young Life programs, and most recently case management for the Indianapolis Department of Child Services. According to Steve, “I have had a chance to see the product of George Robinson’s many years of service and the impact FBA has had in the community and I am humbled by that. I look forward to carrying on the strong tradition of "good sports" and will continue to work towards excellence in providing families a wonderful experience. I want each person who takes part in FBA to feel like he/she is the most important person in the world to us.” First Baptist Athletics is a year-round, community athletic program offering baseball, softball, soccer and basketball for children and teens, aged 5-18. FBA began in 1968 with four baseball teams and has grown to several thousand children/players annually. The FBA program stresses good sportsmanship, citizenship, respect, and learning the game. Craft Beer for Wine Lovers I've found the perfect beer for wine lovers. Not too hoppy. Not too sweet. Multi layered, elegant with notes that pair well with food. That's the good news. The bad news is you can't always get it in Indy. Yet. Daredevil Brewing Company mainly distributes in southern Indiana but this culinary-compatible craft brewery is making more of its beer available in the Indianapolis area. (Check out the "Aggressively Fun Appreciation Tour" dates below.) Owners Michael Pearson and Bill Ballinger have the credentials and the passion to make this operation work. Both are engineers with Eli Lilly which gives them the "science" part of the equation. Both are self-proclaimed "foodies" which means they approach their craft as if they were preparing a meal or baking a cake. As I have said before, making beer is VERY much like baking. You DO have to have a recipe. Measurements matter. Pearson spent time in Colorado where craft beer has been king for decades. He moved to Indiana and met Ballinger in a homebrew club. The two competed for years entering award-winning beers in the Indiana Home Brewing Contest. One year Pearson would win. The next Ballinger would take the title. Finally they decided to pool their talents and give it a try for real. I am so glad they did. Their setup is in a garage in rural Shelby County. It's spotless as a microbrewery facility should be. BIG shiny stainless steel tanks. They had a solid financial plan in place before they even put the first recipe together. Smart. They researched and found the best branding for the product. Smart. They are more focused on quality than quantity. Smart. And they decided to focus on production creating kegs for restaurants and growlers for the home. Instead of wasting time, energy and money on multiple styles, they chose one as their flagship. Liftoff IPA. They use West Coast hops which add a citrusy accent to the golden-hued ale. Aromas of orange peel, tangerine and a subtle but spunky hint of pink grapefruit make this beer work well as a refreshing drink or partner for food. Think of Sauvignon Blanc. That white wine has similar characteristics, so any food you would enjoy with that wine could work with "Liftoff IPA". Shrimp, fish, chicken. Vegetarian dishes would rock with the citrusy notes and clean finish of the IPA. Lift Off is now available in four packs of 16 ounce cans. Daredevil is making some small batch brews on the side. Including its anniversary ale which was just released last week. And once again, THIS is a beer for wine lovers. The "J.W.P. American Stout" got its name from Ballinger's time in the army. He said they had to eat MRE's (those military pouches of meals ready to eat). He said as a foodie it was horrible. But with the instant packet of food was an instant packet of coffee, sugar and hot cocoa mix. He used to blend the three together with some water and create a "Pudding". They called it John Wayne Pudding in a note of respect to the American actor who made many a war film. That same flavor profile can be found in J.W.P. It's deep dark brown in color, rich creamy mouthfeel and aromas and flavors of mocha, milk chocolate, caramel. Rich elegant flavors BUT not heavy or filling. Just pure pleasure. In the wine world I liken this one to an intense Petite Syrah. J.W.P would be a delight with prime rib or a hearty meat and potatoes crock pot stew or chipotle-sauced BBQ ribs. Better yet, poured into a tall glass over a generous scoop of Edy's S'Mores or French Silk ice cream. Oh my. Westfield re-opens The Mayor’s office confirmed that Westfield Boulevard at Broad Ripple Avenue was scheduled to re-open on December 13. It was closed due to construction of the new office building and connection to a water main. This made the already bad afternoon congestion worse at this tricky intersection. Also, a reader has asked us to investigate the afternoon congestion on Broad Ripple Avenue. Should the bike lanes go? The street is backed up daily in the afternoon hours which makes it a slow crawl from Keystone to College.

Sample a class this winter at Broad Ripple Park Broad Ripple Park offers sampler fitness classes and more next month. Are you thinking of taking a class? The new "sampler series" at Broad Ripple Park has classes for you. Take a few days of a class for a few bucks and decide if you want to enroll. These include boot camp fitness, Beda fitness, low impact aerobics, yoga, and more. Classes start in January. Pick up their winter/spring fun guide for details or visit www.broadripplepark.org. Find a health care provider taking exchange plans in the Ripple A word of caution to those buying health insurance at HealthCare.gov, the new Federal exchange for those who lack insurance. The insurance offerings feature much more limited networks of providers (compared to current plans), no out of state coverage, and no out of network coverage. I was offered only two company choices: Anthem and MDWise (with both offering silver, bronze, and gold plans). Finally, the silver plan (which has no premium for some) also has a $6,000+ annual deductible. This means the plan pays nothing until you have spent this much. Therefore, despite the lack of monthly premium, it may be inferior to the bronze plan (which has a modest monthly premium charges but no onerous annual deductible). So compare the silver, bronze, and gold plans carefully. See last week’s Indianapolis Business Journal for details. Finally, you have until March 31 to sign up. Go to the new and improved www. healthcare.gov today if you currently lack health insurance. You will need 2014 projected income information so that they can determine your premium subsidy (if any). Holliday for the Holidays? Holliday Park has some great winter programs including birding through the eyes of photographers (Audubon Society) on January 15. To donate to restore the ruins and exhibit hall renovations, go to www.hollidaypark.org/pricelessasset. Also, don't miss the new nature photography exhibit when you visit the nature center.

Use caution crossing the Monon at the College/75th intersection A reader has let us know that the crossing is very dangerous at 75th and Westfield on the Monon. He was hit by a turning car and suffered permanent leg injuries and recommends that trail users always use the crossing button when attempting to cross this intersection. Sasha's celebrates 36 years! Year in Review What column is complete without a few comments on the year ending 2013. The hot topic this year was of course the Whole Foods debate. I tried to stay neutral but was amazed at the passion on both sides when I attended May’s BRVA meeting on the topic at the Lutheran Church across from the Kroger. The most disturbing story of the year was the 2 home invasions in the Ripple. One of those arrested told Fox59 that he was the nicest robber you would ever want to meet (!) and that it was all about “the money”. Finally, our new parking garage opened. Is it me or is the turquoise covering and entire building architecture disappointing and out of character for the neighborhood? I preferred the plan that featured apartments and a parking garage. • Hey, Rockets! Your Wrestling team competed very well at the Bishop Luers Invitational this past Saturday, despite a short-handed crew. The team finished with a 2-3 record. Freshman phenom Deshawn Adams lost his first match of the year, but still finished in 2nd place. Deshawn’s record for the season is now 12 and 1. Jordan Clay went a perfect 5-0 to win the tournament and was voted tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler. Jordan is now 13 and 0. GREAT JOB TEAM!!
• Congratulations to the girls' swim team on doing very well at its first swim meet. All 12 girls had personal best times. Highlighted were 1st place swims by Junior Margaret Commons and Freshman Jessica Halsmer.
• Donald Crouch, a 7th grade member of the Advanced Band (Wind Ensemble)
and the Marching Band, has been selected to the IMEA All-State Honor Band. He will be traveling to Ft. Wayne for rehearsal with 60 other Honor Band students from all over Indiana, and then performing a concert for Music Educators from all over the world. The other interesting part of this is that he will be the YOUNGEST student there! Congratulations, Donald! Well done!

The good old holidays are here again! And while most of us love this time of year, it doesn’t come without the usual obstacles of added stress, skipped workouts, gluttonous dinner parties and those lovely homemade candies just to mention a few. When you think about it, this time of year can really wreak havoc on our minds and bodies (not to mention the wallet!). Hopefully most of you have agreed with what I have already stated, so I would like to present you with a challenge this year: focus on giving health/fitness/wellness based gifts in lieu of the usual candles and picture frames that collect dust in your closet only to be re-gifted! And while buying your spouse a new treadmill isn’t exactly what you have in mind, fear not; there are hundreds of options that are really affordable and effective! Here are some ideas: 180 Headphones with Ear Warmer: These are amazing! They are like ear muffs with headphones that will keep you warm and moving along to your tunes on those frigid outside workouts. A must have for those who brave the temps throughout the winter. Approx Cost: $20-30 Yoga/Fitness Classes: If a loved one is currently taking or has mentioned wanting to try a fitness class this would be a perfect way to support his/her healthy lifestyle while also saving them money. There are tons of LOCAL studios/gyms that offer classes of all varieties. AND most of them offer packages at discounted rates if you buy in bulk. Healthy Gift Baskets: Instead of giving the baskets filled with cheese, salami or popcorn, opt for one that has much healthier items such as mixed nuts, fruit, and other natural snacks. They are very easy to find and pre-made so you needn’t do any work! The prices of these will obviously range due to size and items. Personal Training Sessions: This is a great idea for someone who is already working with a trainer or has expressed interest in trying this service but has been dragging their heels for whatever reason. Depending on the person, it may be a good idea to get them sessions with a buddy (either another or yourself) so they will feel more comfortable. Varies depending on trainer and length of time (NEVER forget to ask if they are certified!). Water Filtration Bottle: BPA-free stainless steel bottles have become the fitness water bottle of choice. Look for one that has its own water filtration system and they keep water cool for hours. They are not only eco-friendly but will save the recipient $$ since they will not need to buy bottled water. Approx cost: $25-40 Magazine Subscriptions: I love receiving a gift that runs through the entire year! Examples include Shape, Men’s Health, and Fitness which offer workouts, recipes and general health tips. For the cooking enthusiast consider options such as Cooking Light, and for those with a specific interest/hobby there is a magazine for just about any sport under the sun i.e. Runner’s World, Mountain Bike Action. Varies from $15-$75/year Perfect Pushups: These are a hot item among men and women alike. Not only do the handles help you keep your wrists in a neutral position, but the height of the handles also allows you to lower even further to the ground, increasing the intensity of the exercise. They also come with an instructional poster of moves. Approx cost: $40 Keep in mind that not everyone would be thrilled to get gifts such as personal training sessions or a fitness magazine if they have never expressed interest. You shouldn't get someone a gift just because you want them to exercise or be more healthy. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Backyard Birds Legend “How Santa Knows Who’s Naughty or Nice” One day, a chickadee lit on my feeder and began singing. His song told me a Christmas tale about the year Santa Claus lost the List. Goodness, Santa didn’t know who had been naughty or nice. There was no list! Three days before the big night, Santa was still searching his house, workshop and stable – no list. The Mrs. could be of no help because she had to bake her stollens and kugels to finish her holiday projects. Meanwhile, Santa bellowed, “Where is the List? There will be NO Christmas. I don’t know who has been naughty or nice!” After much rummaging and fretting, there was a peck, peck, peck at the window. Two snowy owls that lived in the hollow of the old tree outside the kitchen window pecked until they got Santa’s attention. “Can we help?” they asked. Santa replied, “Oh, if only. You see, I have no list. Without it, there will be no trip and no gifts!” The two wise owls put their heads together to try to save Christmas. They knew the reindeer could not help because they had to save their strength for the big night. The snowshoe hares were too small to hop very far. The seals only went as far south as the California Coast – not far enough. The elves were too busy making last minute gifts. Was there no one at the North Pole to help? Was there no magic left – no miracles? Finally, the aha! Only one group could help: the birds of the world. All the owls had to do was fly far enough south to issue the alert. Because birds inhabited almost every earthly corner, each bird could go to the home of a boy or girl and watch to see who was naughty or nice. Then the birds would report back so Santa could make the List again. That is exactly what happened. Christmas was saved. Santa wrote the List again because “a little bird told him so”… That is, who was naughty or nice. Because all the gifts were delivered on time that year so long ago, birds have been very much a part of every Christmas celebration ever since. Feeding the birds a special treat is an important part of the holidays – a sheaf of wheat, seed wreaths, fruit and nuts. And this is why having a bird’s nest in your Christmas tree brings luck for the New Year.

Biz Div hosted its annual holiday party on Wed. Dec 11 at the Marigold Clothing second floor loft. Forty business and community leaders attended and a great time was had by all. Snow removal is critical to creating a safe and positive experience for everyone who uses the Village. And, snow removal is part of our shared responsibility as community members. Per city code, it is the responsibility of residents and businesses to clear sidewalks and drives in front of their properties (Sec. 431-106). The Department of Code Enforcement can cite businesses and residents for not keeping their sidewalks, drives, and access ramps clear of snow and ice. Let’s all do our part to keep the Village accessible and safe!

Bill Brink was a self-taught wildlife photographer, naturalist and outdoorsman who, until his death occupied the Broad Ripple home in which he was born. He was affectionately known as the “Mayor of Broad Ripple” and impacted many who live and work here. A group of friends and family have come together to establish the Bill Brink Memorial Garden, which will be located along the Monon Trail east of Cornell Avenue from 65th Street to 67th Street. The Garden will be a lasting memorial to Bill, who taught and inspired so many about the great outdoors, wildlife, wildflowers, art and the wonder of nature all around us. The Bill Brink Memorial Garden will be a landscaped linear oasis. It will reflect Bill’s passion for the great outdoors, native Indiana plants, wildlife, art and Broad Ripple Village. There will be a variety of plant habitats including a rain garden, forest wildflowers and a prairie as well as benches, public art and lighting.
Work on the Garden began this fall with the removal of invasive shrub honeysuckle along the Monon Trail near 66th Street (Bill would be very proud of this as he lectured often about the harm done by invasive honeysuckle) and fundraising for the garden is already underway. The goal is to raise $35,000 to complete the project; additional funds will be needed for ongoing maintenance of the garden. Several volunteer planting and maintenance days will be scheduled for 2014. Visit brva.org to make a tax-deductible donation to the project or to volunteer.
