This one was sent in by Steven Lee Chase.

Last night, I happened to be at Brics in Broad Ripple when this event when down. I’m a videographer and photographer so I also happened to have my equipment in my car. It ended up being nothing like I imagined. It started slow, but as time went on, Mr. Blair created rhymes off the cuff dealing with topics that people yelled out. At first, they were jokes and silly things, but the topics started to get more serious and eventually people were even asking about their fears. By the middle of the event, adults were creating songs and writing poems, pouring their hearts out and bearing their souls in front of complete strangers, and since fears are universal it was collectively cathartic. I think we were all grateful we were there that night.

Attorney Focused on Entrepreneurial Businesses Heeds Own Counsel - Kristine Camron Launches kOMpose

After nearly 20 years of providing legal counsel to start-up companies, Kristine Camron has launched kOMpose. kOMpose, headquartered at 6201 Winthrop Avenue in Broad Ripple, is a studio that offers yoga classes and coaching services in order to provide individuals with an opportunity to create their own personal journey of self-discovery, transformation and well-being. “I’ve spent a career advising clients who are looking to take a leap of faith and start a new business. At times I have served as a coach, adviser, friend and counselor. I now have an opportunity to merge what I know as an attorney with my own life experiences to help others on their own personal journey.” In 2009, Kristine’s life was forever changed when she was diagnosed with cancer. It was during her battle with cancer that Kristine found yoga. “Yoga taught me how to breathe and surrender my fears related to my treatment. Yoga was an integral part of my healing process from an emotional, physical and spiritual perspective. As a result of the significant impact that yoga had on me during my cancer treatment, I became certified to teach yoga. I wanted to provide others with the opportunity to experience the many gifts that yoga can offer.” kOMpose will offer a variety of yoga classes taught by experienced yoga teachers beginning December 5, 2016. In addition, Kristine will also provide group and individualized coaching services that will allow individuals to discover their untapped potential and empower them to create a vision and plan for the future. For more information about kOMpose visit: www.facebook.com/komposestudio www.komposeu.com, instagram.com/komposeu Studio phone: 317-493-1161

Jingle Books! A Gift for Every Child

The Indianapolis Public Library, Mayor Joe Hogsett and Indy Reads are encouraging individuals to spread the joy of reading by participating in the third year of Jingle Books, a community-wide project to provide free books for Indianapolis children during the holiday season. Continuing through December 23, Jingle Books allows individuals to “give a book and take a book” at Jingle Books displays at all IndyPL locations. They can take a book home as a gift for young children and/or donate new or gently used children’s books. Free gift wrapping stations will be provided on site at most Library locations. A Jingle Books bin is also available at Indy Reads, 911 Massachusetts Avenue. The goal is to get more books into the hands of young ones who can then read, share and value them as a great gift to receive. “Jingle Books can ensure that every child receives a book as a gift during the holiday season,” stated IndyPL CEO Jackie Nytes. “This is a fun way to help young ones develop their reading and language skills that can pave the way for their future academic success.” In 2015, Jingle Books provided nearly 1,000 books for children throughout Marion County and received more than 1,300 donated books.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

Below is a thought-sequence poem I wrote recently while listening to John Coltrane.

Perfection out of Chaos All of the ingredients are here for greatness. It is a matter of what goes where. But it is such a mess! So we embark upon perfection out of chaos.

The Breakes and Christian Taylor Friday, December 30 Indy CD & Vinyl 806 Broad Ripple Ave all-ages, free, 6:30 pm

Family Tree and NUVO are hosting this great show. They’ve paired the upand-coming rock ‘n’ roll trio, The Breakes, with one of my favorite songwriters, Christian Taylor. The Breakes are a young rock trio that produce a big fun sound. Every time I hear Christian Taylor sing, I wonder why the heck he’s not famous.

New Year’s Eve

There are plenty of ways to celebrate in the neighborhood. The Jazz Kitchen is hosting two seatings for the Walter Beasley show, The Vogue is featuring a Boy Band review. I’ll be working at the Red Key. I promise not to sing if you swing by. I’m looking forward to another great year of music and neighborly things! See you then! -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Farewell to our state rep, Christina Hale, who gave up our seat to run for Lieutenant Governor. While she did not win, we know we will see her again. Hale is a go-getter and the only Hispanic in the Legislature. Welcome to new State Senator, John Ruckelhaus who replaced our RFRA author who decided not to seek reelection. Let’s hope both focus on moving our great state forward, not on partisan, lifestyle issues.

Too many vacancies in the Ripple

While the year saw 2 new apartment complexes begin construction and another one announced, there are still too many vacant storefronts in the Ripple. Rumor has it that the 3 boarded store fronts on Broad Ripple Avenue have been rented. The former Broad Ripple Steak House is also apparently under new owners. Still, as of today, there are too many commercial vacancies in high profile areas. The good news: our apartment rents and housing are now a bargain compared to downtown.

Too much algae on the White River

This summer marked low flows and algae blooms on the White River. That produced unsightly water conditions with a green algae coating along much of the river banks.

Does anyone ride the bus?

I love transit and hope it is expanded including the new Red Line bus rapid transit up College Avenue. This year the IndyGo bus routes serving the Ripple are being revamped. The #17 no longer is split between Kessler Avenue and Broad Ripple Avenue. The #18 now goes to Butler and proceeds downtown instead of going down Pennsylvania. I rode the #18 the other day to and from the new and wonderful Julia Carson Transit Center and proceeded north on Illinois before diverting to Butler University then back to Illinois before turning up Westfield to the Ripple. In a word, while I like Butler University, it adds 15 minutes to the trip. You can drive downtown in 20 minutes. It took me over an hour to get home on the bus. Worse, there were few passengers on the bus and no one got off or got on at Butler and very few going to Broad Ripple at all. Next time I will take the #17. I love transit but the folks backing transit expansion need to take it now. We have great service from the Ripple to downtown. Plus no parking worries.

www.virtualbroadripple.com Why I love the Ripple

I live on the Monon Trail and ride my bike everywhere. The great shops. The Monon Coffee Company (and their great Stars sandwiches). Hubbard and Cravens coffee (the best). The many places to get your hair cut including the new place next to Hubbard and Cravens, HairQuarters, and more. The fresh juices at Ezras. The baked goods at Rene’s. The ice cream at BRICS. The great restaurants. The micro-breweries including my favorites, Thr3e Wise Men and Hopcat. The convenience (doctors, dentists, and more). The nearby LA Fitness. Nearby shopping in Nora, Glendale, Keystone at the Crossing. Plus we are only 20 minutes north of downtown (and 20 minutes south of Carmel). We have it all!

Year in Review

We’ve had a great year in the Ripple. Congrats to retiring BRVA President Kent Springer who tells me he will still be very active in the BRVA and in BR community affairs. He has done an incredible job for the Village. Going forward, we need to recognize that BR is not the hot spot it once was. We are competing with the downtown as the very competitive Fountain Square. But we have a lot they don’t: the very nice Monon Trail, Holliday Park, the 2 art museums, and more. However, we need to diversify. I love a cocktail as much as the next person, but the Village needs to be a diverse, 24-hour community, not just a bar hangout on the weekends for the post-Butler crowd. The new apartment complex/health foods store may help.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Here is another technique. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. Check the square about the 7 in the middle section of the bottom row. Check in the section and in the row and column of the blank for left over numbers. The 1 is above, 3 is in the section, 4 is above, 5 is to the right, 6 is above, 7 and 8 in section, 9 to the left. Only one missing is 2! You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Oh what fun it was to see the hundreds of smiling faces as people lined the streets watching and welcoming the holiday season to the Village during the Broad Ripple Lights Up parade. The kids, the pets, the cars, the singing reindeer added warmth and glee to the cold late afternoon air. Santa expertly led the carols then flipped the switch that turned the drab winter scene around the firehouse into a merry glow of holiday lights. The BRVA float with the giant duck wearing a Santa cap brought plenty of Ho Ho Ho to all who came together to experience the simple yet fulfilling gesture of turning darkness into light. The December edition of Carmel’s Second Saturday Art Walk features a number of Broad Ripple artists and artisans. Main Street is a short drive from the village and a walk up and down that street offers galleries showcasing all kinds of art. Most are open daily and you can see art and talk with the artists at French Blue Gallery (the “12x12” show is terrific!) Inspire Studio, Hoosier Salon and the Upstairs Studio just around its corner where you’ll find former Broad Ripple artists offering classes and work.

by Brandt Carter Backyard Birds Legend “How Santa Knows Who’s Naughty or Nice” One day, a chickadee lit on my feeder and began singing. His song told me a Christmas tale about the year Santa Claus lost the List. Goodness, Santa didn’t know who had been naughty or nice. There was no list! Three days before the big night, Santa was still searching his house, workshop and stable – no list. The Mrs. could be of no help because she had to bake her stollens and kugels to finish her holiday projects. Meanwhile, Santa bellowed, “Where is the List? There will be NO Christmas. I don’t know who has been naughty or nice!” After much rummaging and fretting, there was a peck, peck, peck at the window. Two snowy owls that lived in the hollow of the old tree outside the kitchen window pecked until they got Santa’s attention. “Can we help?” they asked. Santa replied, “Oh, if only. You see, I have no list. Without it, there will be no trip and no gifts!” The two wise owls put their heads together to try to save Christmas. They knew the reindeer could not help because they had to save their strength for the big night. The snowshoe hares were too small to hop very far. The seals only went as far south as the California Coast – not far enough. The elves were too busy making last minute gifts. Was there no one at the North Pole to help? Was there no magic left – no miracles? Finally, the aha! Only one group could help: the birds of the world. All the owls had to do was fly far enough south to issue the alert. Because birds inhabited almost every earthly corner, each bird could go to the home of a boy or girl and watch to see who was naughty or nice. Then the birds would report back so Santa could make the List again. That is exactly what happened. Christmas was saved. Santa wrote the List again because “a little bird told him so”… That is, who was naughty or nice. Because all the gifts were delivered on time that year so long ago, birds have been very much a part of every Christmas celebration ever since. Feeding the birds a special treat is an important part of the holidays – a sheaf of wheat, seed wreaths, fruit and nuts. And this is why having a bird’s nest in your Christmas tree brings luck for the New Year. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
