Landscape Painter Art Featured in Tarkington Tower Show

Landscape painter Rick Ackers will discuss his works in a public exhibit opening reception Friday, Jan. 27, 6:30-8 p.m. at Tarkington Tower Condominium, 4000 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. A prolific landscape painter, Ackers is known for his art painted “en plein air,” French for “painting under the open sky.” While he created most of his works in Central Ohio, his home, Ackers has documented varied scenes in nature across the continental United States, producing artistic compositions from Maine to Montana and Michigan to Florida. Heavily influenced by Van Gogh, Gaugin, Degas and Monet, Ackers says he emulates the PostImpressionist/ Impressionist’s visions of color and movement. The non-traditional application of paint using only a palette knife is his preferred technique, applying heavy paint to canvas in mood-varying schemes, sometimes subdued and quiet, but usually spontaneous and vivid, he says. Viewers can feel the energy exuding from his works. Since his first personal exhibition in 1998 with the Sharon Weiss Gallery, more than 400 private collectors, art dealers and patrons from across the country have procured Ackers’ work. He has won numerous awards and donated paintings to help raise money for organizations in Columbus, Ohio for years, including Art for Life, BRAVO for Children and Art of Recovery. He participated in juried Ohio State Fair Shows several years and the “All Ohio Show,” resulting in a juried National Show with two paintings that won second place. His 18th solo exhibit with the Sharon Weiss Gallery opened Dec. 4, 2015, “My Appalachia,” and featured more than 25 pieces painted in and around Somerset, Ohio, Ackers’ home and studio site. Most of the paintings were done at his early 1800’s log house property there. The Ackers exhibit is free and open to the public daily through April 25, following the wine and cheese reception Jan. 27. Parking is available behind Tarkington Tower or in the parking lot behind the Dr. Martin Luther King Center off of 40th Street, just west of the iconic Mid-Century Modern high-rise. For more information, call Jaymes Anderson, Tarkington Tower events committee chair, (760) 799-5751.

7 Jan 6 - Jan 19, 2017 * * * * * * * * * * * *

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Buzzing Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Happiest of New Years, gentle readers. I hope 2017 is full of music, laughter, and good cheer!

Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine Friday, January 6 & Friday, January 20 Aristocrat Pub & Restaurant 5212 College Avenue - all-ages, free, 9 pm

If you haven’t had the chance to hear the lovely and talented duo of Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine, you’re missing out! They play a great mix of roots, jazz, blues, and country music. They weave their original songs through an eclectic catalog of standards and quirky cover tunes. Scott is one of the best guitar players in the city and Andra is known for her powerhouse vocalist and stringed instrument playing. She has graced the cover of Mandolin Magazine, who named her “First Lady of the Blues Mandolin.” The Aristocrat will be serving their well-loved menu and extensive beer selection.

Otis Gibbs with Amy Lashley Friday, January 20 HiFi - 1043 Virginia Avenue 21+, $13 pre-sale, $15 night of, doors 7, show 8 pm

I can’t tell you how excited I am about this show! Both Otis Gibbs and Amy Lashley have brand-spankin’ new albums out - which are both wonderful, by the way - and are on a mini-tour. Otis tours the world over, but it’s a rare treat to get to see Amy on-stage. Otis and Amy moved from their Broad Ripple home to South Nashville, TN nine years ago and we sure do miss ‘em. Otis’s latest record, “Mount Renraw,” was recorded in their living room on his 50th birthday. The album is everything we’ve come to expect from Otis. Honest songs about quirky places and long-lost history. Amy’s “Daredevils, Strugglers, and Daydreamers,” features her beautiful voice and outstanding storytelling. This will be HiFi’s first show in their expanded space - what a great way to kick it off!

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. Poetic Thoughts

by C.W. Pruitt II

2 Joyful Dancers The first dancing poem alludes to King David from II Samuel chapter 6 of the Old Testament. The second poem is about Emile Namsemon. He was a friend of mine from my Ball State days.

The Dancing King He was magnetized by the Ark and his dancing would have made Michael Jackson and Fred Astaire look slow and stiff. It would have been a sight to see David dance before the Lord. C.W. Pruitt II Sept. 15, 2016

to: emile namsemon your dancing was electric joy spun throughout the room – those around imbibed the vibe of the joyful dancing saint

New Years Resolutions for Broad Ripple Here’s my list for New Year’s Resolutions for the Ripple● Westfield Boulevard is looking a little worse for the wear with a lot of potholes showing up again on north of Broad Ripple Avenue. Let’s fix that. ● Less shuttered businesses in 2017. Let’s hope this year means more businesses filling in where we currently have vacancies. Many are planned. I personally will be glad when the old Broad Ripple Steak House no longer has plywood blocking the doorway. ● Welcome Coil Apartments and new grocery store. While we need more grocery stores in the area like a whole in the head, the new apartments and grocery store will be opening soon hopefully bringing more daytime traffic to the area. The Ripple has seen only a few new apartments so additional inventory will help us be competitive with the new offerings in downtown. ● Support transit in the Ripple. Let’s hope the City Council follows the will of the voters by allowing the new voter-authorized income tax increase to support IndyGo including bus rapid transit. Let’s not the perfect be the enemy of the good. Broad Ripple will be more vibrant with better transit. ● Reduced crime. We are on a roll folks. Broad Ripple is a safe place thanks to the community support and the police. ● Take the train to Chicago. Take the state-supported train to Chicago, The Hoosier State. It’s a great alternative to congested I-65.

Many readers had contacted the Gazette asking why there were barricades on the Westfield bridge for months this fall. I recently received an explanation from the Department of Public Works. “This was a repair to a bearing under the beam located on the southwest end of the bridge. Our bridge consultant recommended we place barrels and signage at the location to move traffic off of the repair until it was completed. These materials were left on site to be used as needed until the repair was fully complete. “Once the bearing was replaced, concrete was poured and its strength was tested, but did not pass this strength test. Due to this, our contractors had to repeat the pouring process. “Our contractor did not have to close the bridge for a majority of this repair, and only had to restrict traffic with a flagging operation. As I mentioned, the original schedule for the repair was to only last a few days, however weather conditions affected the repair timeline, as well as the additional order of necessary supplies.”

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will put a 4 in the left section of the middle row that contains the 5-6-8-9. The 4 in the center eliminates the space to the right of the 6. The 4 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The 4 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the space below the 9. The only space left is to the left of the 8. You have learned one technique needed to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

I caught up on my wine magazine reading over the holidays, including the Wine Spectator Top 100 List (See picture). One of my Warfleigh neighbors subscribes and after he reads the monthly issue he shares it with me. I am not a fan of the “point” rating system that WS supports, but am always willing and wanting to read as much as I can about wine. WS ranks its “best” each year, based on its experts taste and wine sales/ ads. It’s a good guide and worth a look. But as always, only YOU know what is a “good” or “best” wine, as that is one that YOU like. Don’t let a rating or review persuade you away from a bottle. Give it a try, write down your thoughts and compare to other reviews and see which ones are closest to your “taste”. Then magazines, guides and people CAN be a help when you buy your wines. One of the WS Top 100 is the 2015 Kono Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand (WS #41). It was one of several wines my family and I enjoyed during the holidays. As you can see from the picture, we celebrated on the beach in Florida where the temperatures and fresh seafood made crisp, dry, zippy Sauvignon Blanc our wine of choice for the week. In addition to the Kono, we also enjoyed SB from Dry Creek Vineyards, David Frost, Beachhouse and Monkey Bay. All very affordable, and very tasty even it they didn’t make the WS Top 100.

Random Ripplings On December 14, Noble of Indiana and the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club held their 58th annual Holiday/Christmas party at the Northside K. of C. Hall. Since 1958, Sertoma has provided more than 1,100 children with this festive holiday experience. Christmas gifts purchased by Sertoma members and Noble of Indiana staff were distributed by “Santa” and Mrs. Claus, at a luncheon hosted by the two organizations. Each year the therapists at Noble select 20 of their clients who have qualified for help as part of the First Steps program of Indiana which includes children ranging in age from one to five. The Noble staff provided transportation for each child and family members, and Sertoma members and spouses helped provide a true holiday atmosphere, by purchasing Christmas gifts specific to each child.

Random Ripplings

This one was sent in by Larry Mitchell. He noticed that during the build-out of the Erbert and Gerbert’s Sandwich Shop at Winthrop and Broad Ripple Avenue, the old green band of the facade was exposed. Before Sigman’s Gallery, this location was Chang’s in the 70’s and House of Morris in the 50’s. photo by Larry Mitchell
