mario@broadripplegazette.com Random Acts of Flowers started blooming at 1057 East 54th Street, Suite F last fall. Executive Director Alison Kothe said, “We are a national non-profit organization based in Knoxville, Tennessee. Indianapolis is the fifth branch to open and we officially launched our mission on October 13, 2016. I personally became involved when some friends of mine who were involved in the initial startup funding for the branch, approached me about working for the organization. I was immediately enchanted by the mission and jumped at the opportunity.” Ms. Kothe explained. Program Manager Lindsay Potter said, “The mission of Random Acts of Flowers is to improve the emotional health and wellbeing of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragement and personal moments of kindness. Basically, we use flowers that would otherwise be thrown away, either after a wedding or special event, or flowers that are past their “sell-by” date at a grocery store or wholesaler, and we turn those flowers into Random Acts of Flowers new, beautiful arrangements 1057 East 54th Street, Suite F that we deliver to patients in local hospitals and residents in www.randomactsofflowers.org assisted living centers. In the process of accomplishing our mission, we are committed to operating with a sense of environmental responsibility. Therefore, beyond rescuing and repurposing these flowers that would otherwise end up in the landfill, we also recycle vases to use with our arrangements and we compost hundreds of gallons of organic waste on a local farm each week. However, the heart of our mission is the moment of kindness and caring that takes place between the delivery volunteer and the recipient. In a world where these touchpoints between strangers can be few and far between, it is our goal to bring a bit of joy and compassion to those who are the most vulnerable.” Program Coordinator Emily Sell said, “We have volunteer opportunities for every aspect of our operation, including picking up the donated flowers, repurposing the flowers for arrangements, arranging the bouquets and perhaps most importantly delivering to those in need of a spiritual lift. All shifts take place Monday through Thursday between 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are our floral design shifts. Volunteers come in and create

arrangements for that afternoon’s delivery. We never know what kind of flowers we are going to have to work with from week to week, which can be a fun challenge for our volunteers.” She added, “All of our arrangements are delivered in vases that are donated and so essentially, each vase equals one person that we can serve. We’re always in need of vases, so for individuals interested in our mission who aren’t able to attend one of our daily shifts, hosting vase drives at their school, church or place of business is a wonderful, and essential, way for them to be involved.” Ms. Potter added, “The wonderful thing about RAF is that it’s a very simple concept that has a huge impact. There isn’t anyone in our community who has not been touched by the experience of having a loved one require healthcare assistance. Everyone can relate to the fear, the stress and often just the boredom of being hospitalized. According to their website, www.randomactsofflowers.org/history, RAF took root after near fatal accident by founder Larsen Jay in July of 2007. He credited the outpouring of support he received in the form of daily visitors and dozens of floral arrangements while in the hospital as a key to providing the emotional lift and encouragement that helped him persevere through the multiple surgeries and challenging recovery process he faced. When Larsen was capable of leaving his room, he noticed how many of his fellow patients did not have visitors or flowers – the very thing that helped him so much in those early and difficult days. The first “Random Act of Flowers” delivery was made moments later as Larsen Jay repurposed his flowers and delivered them from his wheelchair. His recollections of these events inspired him to form the company in 2008. Random Acts of Flowers not only provides a second life to creating attractive floral arrangements, but also brightens the days of individuals receiving them. Alison Kothe, Lindsay Potter, Emily Sells and their volunteers’ acts of goodwill create lasting memories for recipients.

Live Christmas Tree Disposal Wraps Up This Month
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) and Indy Parks would like to remind citizens that the opportunity to drop off live Christmas trees at Indy Parks drop-off locations ends on Tuesday, January 31. The live Christmas tree disposal program continues to provide residents an opportunity to recycle their live trees for a variety of sustainable landscaping resources. Trees can be dropped off from dusk until dawn at the following locations. All ornaments, tinsel, lights, tree stands and other non-organic decorative materials must be removed from trees before dropping off. Eighteen months ago, Carmel resident Keith Keokuk was treated to a free lunch and experienced a life-changing moment at the same time. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Red Line, improved transit for 2017 At the city council meeting held on January 9, Proposal 3, a measure to enact a tax dedicated to transit, was introduced by Council President Maggie Lewis. The measure will be heard by multiple Council committees with a public hearing and vote at the Rules and Public Policy Committee. The full council is expected to vote for final adoption on Monday, February 27, 2017. “The Marion County Transit Plan proposes significant improvements for a historically underfunded mass transit system,” said Mike Terry, IndyGo president and CEO. “Nearly 60% of Marion County residents voted in favor of a tax to improve the city’s transit system.” The maximum rate of 0.25% would be dedicated to funding service improvements including shorter wait times, extended weekend and late night operations, and other capital investments like new vehicles and rapid transit lines. Committee meetings continue until the final vote at the City-County Council meeting on February 27. The proposed new bus rapid transit line from Broad Ripple to downtown (the Red Line) faced a setback last month when a $75 million grant for the Red Line was not authorized by Congress when it failed to pass a new transportation budget that contained such authorization. However it still could be passed this year. According to Bryan Luellen of IndyGo:“Indianapolis’s Red Line is one project among 31 Federal Transit Administration grants awaiting Congressional action. The Red Line has already cleared two major hurdles: FTA recommendation for funding and inclusion in the President’s budget. Programs in nearly every area of government, from agriculture to foreign affairs, are also reliant on the appropriations process. The project is still on schedule and pre-construction work is underway. Outreach and stakeholder engagement continue as final construction documents are being prepared.” Not everyone is on board. Lee Lange of the Stop the Red Line group argues that the Federal grant set back is the perfect time for IndyGo to go back to the drawing board to develop a more appropriate plan that serves folks who actually use IndyGo. Her group is opposed to the establishment of a permanent lane down College Avenue for the route which they claim will cause the loss of parking, that it will be difficult to turn left off College, and that it will interfere with emergency vehicles.

Two Winter Farmers Markets In The Ripple? Have you been to the Broad Ripple Winter Market? It is held every Saturday at the Bent Rail Brewery (5301 Winthrop Avenue) and runs from 9 a.m. until 12 noon. According to the Market’s Mark Demerly, they are featuring more fresh produce this year including organic lettuce, potatoes, carrots, and tomatoes all grown locally in Indiana. Fresh baked breads as well as salmon and bison meats are also featured, as is live music. SNAP participants can get double SNAP dollars for Indiana-grown fruits and vegetables by using their Hoosier Works EBT card to double

New shared office space opens The Hatch has arrived. It’s a shared office space environment for “creative co-working”. For those like me who tire of sitting alone working from our homes, it’s an intriguing idea. It costs $40 per day or $99 a month to use the facility (although you can rent an office as well). It also includes a conference room, rooms for telephone calls, a café, and a creative studio space for artists and photographers. You can visit them at 6161 Hillside Avenue near the LA Fitness. New apartments, grocery store open soon Would you like to take an elevator down to your grocery store? You can if you live at the new Coil Apartments on College. The new Coil Apartments will be opening in late March or early April while the new grocery store will be opening in late March. Studios start at $996 while one bedrooms start at $1286. Water and electric are paid separately as is the $100 parking fee if you want a spot in the garage. You can find them in The Hatch for now, taking lease applications, or see the new complex and grocery store at 6349 College Avenue where hard hat tours of the apartments are being scheduled.

100 Days 100 Ways Hello readers!! It’s been a while and I apologize for taking such a lengthy break...but I actually have a really good excuse. Let me explain... Back in July I received an email from a woman saying that they were looking for a personal trainer for a new project. First of all, as a business owner, I probably get at least 3 times the junk mail that others do (and I know you get a lot). So the fact that I even opened this email was a total fluke. And after I read the word “project” I almost hit delete as that usually translates to “free” or some kind of marketing scheme to try to swindle me out of hard earned $$. But, nevertheless, I read on. She explained that two best friends, local and renowned author, John Green (who wrote the NYT bestseller Fault in Our Stars), and Chris Waters were exploring an idea called “100 Days of Fitness” in which they would spend 100 consecutive days exploring the vast world of health and wellness. This could be exercise, diet, mental health, etc. The project would be videotaped and aired on YouTube (this is when I REALLY almost hit delete!). I thought to myself “wow, this seems a bit overwhelming,” as I am already a pretty busy person. But for some reason I thought what the heck!! Can’t hurt to meet just for fun to chat about it. And then turn it down :) Welp, as you may have guessed I didn’t turn it down... John, Chris, his filmmakers and I all met at the studio one afternoon and the layers that seemed overwhelming and stressful were slowly peeled away. They were looking for a “home base” local gym/trainer to visit twice a week during the 100 days, and the other days of each week they would participate in a myriad of activities ranging anywhere from boxing to aerial yoga to cooking classes and literally everything in between. And *added bonus* I would be getting paid! So, I decided to give it a go as a personal challenge and a new adventure. John wanted to base the series on the changes that the body experiences with wellness in ways that I could determine EXCEPT weight. He felt that there is too much emphasis on the number on the scale. So I came up with about 10 “metrics” to measure progress; such heart rate during a specific activity, flexibility gains, plank hold duration, etc. to set the bar on Day 1 and routinely measure it every so often to analyze the improvements (if any) in their fitness levels. As I write this today we are on Day 82. And it truly has been an amazing experience so far! The show has started airing and has showed 6 episodes as of now. I won’t talk too much about the details because I want you to see for yourself. Look up “100 days John Green” on YouTube and you can personally witness the journey of these two brave, hilarious and bromance friends! It’s funny, inspiring, informative and truly entertaining. To boot, they like to give me a hard time when I make them do things they would rather not...but they always do it. You will see some Monon trail running, park workouts, circuit training, swimming, an indoor obstacle course, boxing, nutritionist advice, etc. AND what’s even cooler is that you can download all of the workouts from the site and have them for yourself for free! Please follow with me on the show for the next 3 or so on YouTube or right here in the gazette to watch what happens mentally, physically, spiritually when you add wellness into your life. Who knows you may be inspired to try something that they did that you NEVER would have and fall in love with it. Trust me, they tried ALOT of things. Rest assured, watching the videos is entirely free. There are no marketing gimmicks, product plugs yadda yadda. It’s just a fun display of two friends trying to transition into a so-called “healthy mid life crisis”. I’ll leave the article saying that I also had the benefit of trying new things, got out of my comfort zone of being on camera, researched some new workout ideas, and was reminded to not judge a book by its cover (the original email). I can honestly say I am going to be pretty sad when the 100 Days is over. Such a fun experience, and after reading the comments on the videos it has already inspired thousands to follow along, which is the best part! :) John claims he wants to continue to train with me and I hope he is speaking the truth!! But if not, I have no doubt whatsoever that he and Chris will continue to do a regular fitness routine of some sort as they both regularly mention how much they have benefited physically, but even more so, mentally. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex way to solve. On the Medium puzzle, we see that the 3 in the left section of the middle row would eliminate the space above and below the 1 in the section below (lower-left section). This means a 3 will have to be in the left-most column of that section, but we don’t know where. That eventual 3 will eliminate the spaces above the 1 in the upper-left section. The 3 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space above the 8-9. The 3 in right section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 9. One of the country’s largest wine competitions took place recently in California. The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition had nearly 7000 entries from over 1400 US wineries. This competition is all about consumers. Wines are judged on taste, price, availability and consistency. If you’re looking for new labels, varietals and styles for the new year it’s worth taking a closer look at the wines that took top honors. Familiar names like Korbel, Hanna and even an ice wine from national restaurant/winery Coopers Hawk are on that list. by Brandt Carter Clean Up Crew The holidays have come and gone. Whew! What a bustling time! From all the make-ready to the actual festivities and then cleaning up−nothing is ever dull or static. As the New Year unfolds, I think back on all the guests: ones dropping off gifts and treats, some stopping by to chat, or others coming in from out of town. I stockpiled provisions in anticipation that surprises would surely pop up at my doorstep. As for people, I believe in being prepared for as the biblical saying goes, “You never know if you will be entertaining angels.” For the other critters at my home, the cat, dogs, and yard critters are probably glad the streams of people have lessened. We often have guest dogs visit, so extra treats are in order. I save special toys for some canine visitors; others I have to hide so they are not destroyed. The frozen patio and yard are always a great place for play dates. Luckily the cat has no visitors. She does relish the birds on the other side of the big picture window. Her chatter and vocals entertain us, and let us know our birds are busy emptying the feeders. I also load up the provisions for the outdoor critters. It is especially important at this time of year to supplement birds during harsh weather conditions. I offer extra birdseed, suet cakes, and peanuts. I have put out a few more feeders and added the heated birdbath. Now I have the steady stream of outdoor visitors. The Downey, Red-bellied woodpeckers along with the nuthatches, flickers, and titmice gratefully dine at the suet feeders all day long. Every now and then I spy a blue jay trying to mine a peanut. The cardinals, house finches, photo by Bob Moul sparrows and chickadees You can see crows chasing hawks or owls in the sky show their gratitude for a free around Broad Ripple. meal of Backyard Premium blend made of sunflower, chips, safflower, and millet. They kick out the millet so my ground feeders (mourning doves, juncos, cardinals, and squirrels) get served a meal also! This month is also a great time to clean the kitchen of provisions that were overlooked. You can offer your backyard critters your stale nuts, wilted fruit, and tired popcorn and cranberries. You might try tying them to a tree or draping them over a shrub. Did you know crows love turkey carcasses? Put it in an old onion bag and tie it to a tree limb. You can also put stale bread and squash seeds in a tray feeder. They will appreciate withered apples too. The birds and critters in your backyard will be only too happy to help you clean up after the holidays!
