Crossroads of America Scout Band - 100th anniversary concert at Belzer

alan@broadripplegazette.com The 100th Birthday Concert for the Crossroads of America Scout Band was held at Camp Belzer on February 12. My connection to the band is from growing up across the street from the Lobraico’s. Multiple generations of the Lobraico family played in it. My father remembers Mike Lobraico, who started Lobraico’s Rexall Drugs that opened at the corner of Guilford and Westfield in 1925 (now Runners Forum and The Red Room), practicing his trumpet on the porch of his 61st and Carrollton house. Mike’s son Joe and grandson Joey both also played in the band. Mike’s granddaughter Mary tells me that boys from the band would play carols in the Broad Ripple drug store at Christmas. The back of the program from the 100th anniversary concert lists the many activities coming during the 100th Anniversary Celebration Week at Camp Belzer - July 2 - July 8, including community parades, vintage campsite, Scout Band museum, Merit Badge work and the finale 100th Anniversary Concert.

Hatch co-founder and chief creative officer Ben Carlson described the inspiration behind the innovative workspace at 6161 Hillside Avenue. “I own a social media company called Fizziology with my partner, Jen Handley. We were looking for a new home for our company, and were excited by the co-working options we found for our teams in Los Angeles and Nashville. We thought that fusing the co-working revolution with a really creative space would be something Indy needed.” Handley and Carlson then partnered with Chad Handley for his background in real estate development and design along with Laurie Schneider whose background in advertising was a fit for running operations and member experience. The colorful logo on the building’s north side brightens any overcast winter day with inspiration. “While Indy has technology incubators, we didn’t feel there was a place for creative people to call home. This building is in Broad Ripple - the creative heart and soul of Indianapolis. The Hatch is for freelance writers, designers, photographers, as well as small business people and people who work from
home. As more of the economy shifts from going to work in the same office for decades to a gig economy, there are thousands of people who need a place like this for their business,” he explained. The Hatch utilizes the Broad Ripple space as a multi-purpose facility. On a recent Wednesday, approximately 180 people attended a Linking Indy Women networking event. Verge, a local tech organization, and Creative Mornings have also hosted events from the stage that overlooks a large work area. There are power outlets everywhere in the building built into the seating and tables and a Wi-Fi network with dedicated fiber optics is free for all members. “We are looking into other locations in Indianapolis and other markets,” Carlson says. According to their website, www.thehatchcreates.com, The Hatch is available for individual memberships, corporate memberships, large and small events, private office suites, and creative studio rentals. The Hatch provides a sense of community among its members and is a welcome addition to the vibrant Broad Ripple Village corridor.

alan@broadripplegazette.com An open house was held at the Glendale branch of the Indianapolis Public Library on February 6. Representatives were on hand from the Army Corps of Engineers (ACE) and the Department of Public Works (DPW) to answer questions about the upcoming tree clearing along the White River levee on the north side of Indianapolis. The ACE conducted a survey of the entire levee for the White River that starts on the north end in Broad Ripple and goes south along the river. Hundreds of detailed cross-sections were drawn showing every tree and its relationship to the levee wall. From these cross-sections it was determined which vegetation could remain and which would be removed. As shown in the above right photo, the cross-sections show the height of the dirt around the levee wall. Based on ACE standards, a dotted line (enhanced with green) shows the minimum area that cannot contain any plant growths. If a tree had a root ball in

the critical area and the tree fell over in a storm, the root ball would rip from the levee allowing for further erosion and possible breach. Anything putting roots in to the designated areas is slated for removal. Many trees though have their entire root ball (highlighted in red) above that minimum safe line and can therefore remain on the river bank. Jacob Sinkhorn, project engineer from the Corps, said that the clearing will happen this Spring.

Pulitzer Prize-Winning Author Junot Díaz to Present 2017 McFadden Memorial Lecture! The entire community is invited as award-winning author Junot Díaz presents The Indianapolis Public Library’s 2017 McFadden Memorial Lecture on Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at Central Library, 40 E. St. Clair Street. Diaz will discuss his career as a writer and social activist during this presentation moderated by local journalist Raphael Sanchez and conduct a book signing following the program. Díaz is best known for his short story collection, Drown (1996), and his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (2007), which also earned the National Book Critics Circle Award. His second short story collection, This Is How You Lose Her (2012), was a New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist. He is a recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and PEN/O Henry Award. Díaz was selected as one of the 39 most important Latin American writers under the age of 39 by the Bogotá World Book Capital and the Hay Festival, and as one of the 20 top writers for the 21st century by The New Yorker magazine. Díaz was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. He is currently the fiction editor at Boston Review and Nancy Allen Professor of Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Díaz has been a critical voice on immigration policy in the United States and the deportation of Haitians and Haitian-Dominicans by the Dominican government. He is the cofounder of the Voices of Our Nation Workshop and honorary chairman of the DREAM project, a non-profit education involvement program in the Dominican Republic. In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, the title character is a sweet but disastrously overweight ghetto nerd who, from the New Jersey home he shares with his old world mother and rebellious sister, dreams of becoming the Dominican J.R.R. Tolkien and, most of all, finding love. Traffic Improvements And Changes At Fall Creek Parkway Near Central Avenue Bridge
The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that in the coming days, traffic pattern changes will be made to increase traffic safety and operational efficiency along Fall Creek Parkway. DPW installed vertical pavement markers on the south side of the center lane along Fall Creek Parkway between 30th Street and Central Avenue. This addition will separate opposing lanes of traffic and provide three inbound lanes and two outbound lanes along Fall Creek Parkway between 30th Street and College Avenue. Starting February 1, traffic headed westbound on Fall Creek Parkway at College Avenue will see a dedicated left turn lane and left turn arrow at the traffic signal. This will allow drivers to turn left and proceed southbound on College Avenue. Additional traffic safety in the area: - Increased barricades on Central Avenue at Fall Creek Parkway to improve safety. - Detour signs on Fall Creek Parkway westbound from 30th Street denoting an upcoming left turn signal. - Removing existing pavement markings on Fall Creek Parkway at Central to eliminate left turn opportunities at the intersection. - Additional pavement markings will allow two inbound lanes to proceed through the intersection

These measures and improvements come after the closure of the bridge over Fall Creek at Central Avenue. The bridge is closed for replacement and is scheduled to reopen in 2018.
JCC Indianapolis Receives Largest-Ever Endowment Gift
The generosity of Irwin and Ann Katz (of blessed memory) will be remembered forever through an endowment created by their children to sustain arts programming at the JCC. The Irwin and Ann Katz Cultural Arts and Education Endowment Fund was established with a gift from the family representing the largest-ever endowment gift given to the JCC. The endowment will provide funding of about $35,000 every year to support JCC arts programming. Irv Katz (1919-2015) was a founding partner of law firm Katz, Sapper & Miller and was devoted to the JCC for more than 70 years. He was the only board president to serve two consecutive terms, leading the JCC at a pivotal time after World War II when the organization was raising funds to purchase land and construct the current facility. The annual Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts was transformed from a one-week book fair to a major three-week cultural arts event when in 2000, Irv made a significant commitment to an annual contribution over a 15-year time period. In addition to financially supporting the growth of adult continuing education programs, Irv Katz also led the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Indianapolis (1972-75).

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Assn he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1930’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The History of Indianapolis Punk Rock (and beyond*) Friday, March 3 Circle City Industrial Complex 1125 Brookside Avenue - all-ages, free, 6-10 PM
Things like this give me justification for my habit of hanging onto things way too long. I’ve packed and hauled a file folder of punk rock show flyers through at least a dozen moves (including one out of state). There was creativity with a dash of the practical in making a flyer to promote a band and a show. The typical flyers were created on an 8 ½ x 11-inch piece of paper so they could fit on the Xerox machine. I was never the flier creator – my specialty was making buttons with my Badge-A-Minit pinback button press. I was however, a champion flyer hanger. Have tape, will travel. The exhibition will feature not only flyers, but photographs and historical information from the Indianapolis punk rock scene in the late 1970s through the 1980s in Satch Art Space and the adjacent Stokol Gallery. History of Indianapolis Punk Rock (and beyond*) show will hang at the Circle City Industrial Complex from March 3 – 31. There will be an opening party
on First Friday, March 3, with a performance by Indianapolis band, Cheetah Priest – the band debuted at the Tonic Ball in November. A display of historic punk records and ephemera will be shown by Indiana Music and Entertainment Museum. I have loaned my collection to exhibit, I’m not sure if any will be on display, but I can’t wait to see the collection. The exhibition in the Stokol Gallery will be open weekdays, 9 am to 5 pm, from March 3 through March 31, 2017. A special showing will be on Sunday, March 12, from 10 am to 4 pm. *well, at least to Bloomington and Lafayette… -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple Honors Reverend Charles R. Harrison as the winner of the 2016-2017 Service to Mankind Award
Most of our current readers have not seen CW’s columns from the early days of the Broad Ripple Gazette when we only had 2500 The Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple awards the Service to Mankind Award to readers (we now have 7000!). Here is his 5th column from Volume an individual or group that has provided outstanding service to those in need in our community. This year’s winner is Reverend Charles R. Harrison, Pastor 1 #17 first published on December 24, 2004. of Barnes United Methodist Church and founder and head of The Ten Point Coalition of Indianapolis. The award was presented to the Coalition for their success in fighting crime in “so many” Indianapolis neighborhoods this past year. The Reverend Harrison lives and works in Indianapolis -- a city in which the black population represents twenty-seven percent of the population but accounts for the majority of the reported crime. He organized a group of friends into what became The Ten Point Coalition of Indianapolis. Today, The Ten Point Coalition of Indianapolis conducts faith walks and faith patrols. Participants wear bright yellow vests as they walk or ride in neighborhoods where there are boarded-up houses and stores and few if any streetlights -- neighborhoods the police are reluctant to visit. On their faith walks and faith patrols, which take place at least five days a week, members of the coalition talk to the people of the neighborhoods and often offer curbside counseling. Their presence fosters an aura of caring and serves as a great deterrent to crime. They provide street-level intelligence to law enforcement and watch over potential hot spots. Reverend Harrison and his colleagues make a special effort to reach and positively influence high risk young people, particularly those between fourteen and twenty years of age, to improve their chances of leading meaningful, productive lives. Harrison is currently the president of the board of directors of The Ten Point Coalition and the chaplain for the Indiana State Police. He is a member of numerous ministerial boards of directors and he has received many prestigious awards including Sagamore of the Wabash and the Distinguished Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Leadership Award. We have just recently learned that Reverend Harrison will soon go to Washington, D.C., together with his nominator, Special Agent in Charge, Jay Abbott, to be awarded the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award. Reverend Harrison has been serving his parish, his neighbors and the citizens of Indianapolis by dedicating his life to the church and its teachings. He has worked tirelessly to guide and protect the residents of our city’s most at-risk neighborhoods. Reverend Harrison accepted the award on behalf of the partners “who do the hard work” as he put it -- the pastors, the churches, IMPD, Sheriff’s Department, FBI, Ten Point Coalition, and businesses that hire felons and stay on top of them every day. “It’s all of them working together to try to improve the quality of life in the high risk areas of our city.” High-risk areas were identified as Butler/Tarkington, Crown Hill, and United Northwest, with the latter now posing the greatest challenge. Reverend Harrison expressed proudness for the number of days Butler/Tarkington and Crown Hill had gone without a homicide. In each of these areas, he commented that most of the neighborhoods in the areas are normal, but there are a few places in each which cause the big problems for all. Notable guests in attendance were Fawn Porter Harrison, wife of Reverend Harrison; Fanchon Stinger, FOX59 News; Reverend Rob Fuquay, Pastor of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church; Jay Abbott, Special Agent-in-Charge, Indianapolis FBI. Following Reverend Harrison’s remarks, Mr. Abbott directed his comments towards Broad Ripple Sertoma, thanking them for what they do and for reaching out and selecting Reverend Harrison as the Sertoman of the Year. Ms. Stinger emphasized that all of us need to reach out to the younger generation and give them hope, just as Reverend Harrison is doing.

Proposed flood wall in the news again The ongoing drama of the proposed floodwall along the Central Canal continues. Reader Jim Polito of the Save the Warfleigh group opposes new state legislation regarding the flood wall. His group supports the proposed Indianapolis North Flood Damage Reduction Project which they say provides extensive benefit including flood protection for Broad Ripple, Warfleigh, south Warfleigh and north Butler-Tarkington. They claim the project is fully funded and shovel ready with federal funding providing 75% of construction costs. The group says that the city continues to work with Rocky Ripple to explore
future projects that would provide Rocky Ripple flood protection (apparently left out of the current plan). Nevertheless, Polito claims new legislation in the state legislature suggests either a Rocky Ripple or Butler-Tarkington resident sue the City to stop the project and would expose residents to the ever-present threat of catastrophic loss of life and property as they impose attorney’s fees.

a companion to “100 Days of Fitness”

Days 29-42 Hello readers. I hope that you have been following along with the show I have been writing about entitled “100 Days”. This show highlights local author John Green and his best friend Chris Waters tackling various fitness and diets challenges for 100 consecutive days. Week 5 hits in and it is apparent that the “honeymoon phase” may be over in regards to Chris and John. They have been trying to stay the course with workouts and diet. But, as life happens, there are obstacles as well. Realistically, it would be highly unlikely that everything would go 100% according to plan for an entire 100 days. Especially when it comes to making somewhat drastic changes to lifestyles. Week 5 displays this fact as John and Chris get into a minor spat about diet pitfalls. It was the first time that the “bromance” was not in full display. And I wasn’t surprised... it didn’t get too ugly though and by the end of the workout all was well in the land of 100 Days. This was also the week of Thanksgiving as we all know can be quite a challenge, as John admitted while visiting family in Montana. Although he did get in some runs and hiked out there in that lovely state, so not a total bust!! And Chris went on a morning holiday run with his buddies on our lovely local tow path, which is a great tradition for him. Week 6 was a pretty intense regimen. The guys visited the Naptown Roller Girls (our local roller derby team) and John clearly underestimated the hardcore-ness of this group. After falling on a turn and bruising his tail bone, they continued to do a non-skating boot camp style workout that left them both pretty exhausted and with a new appreciation for the sport. They also met with their dietitian to regroup with new goals and expectations. She suggested more frequent snacks during the day and list writing to remember the WHY in their journey. I found her tips to be helpful as did they. The last part of week 6 as far as I was involved was a tough free weight workout with me which I’m not sure they particularly enjoyed, but I did this workout for exactly that reason. I wanted to show them the vast amount of ways you can work, fatigue and build the same muscle group. There is no one way to do “resistance training”. Working out does not mean just cardio and pumping weights. It wasn’t their favorite style, which I was expecting, and wasn’t going to make them do it again....but I at least wanted them to try it. And last, but CERTAINLY not least, was their final workout of the week with boxing instructor Suzana. Suzana used to work for me and she’s about as intense as they come. Let’s just say they both agreed it was the hardest workout they had ever endured. Dozens of nonstop drills and her “breaks” included mountain climbers and burpees. It didn’t look pleasant and John even dry heaved. Personally, this is not my style as I don’t find nearly passing out and vomiting the picture of health...but that’s why it is good there are so many different types of fitness/training out there. Some people swear by their trainers while others would not enjoy that physical feeling. If you have been following along it is also quite clear that the guys are becoming much more fit. Their strength and endurance have markedly increased despite a few bumps in the road. Their accountability towards one another and to me is a huge boost toward their success!! If you would like to challenge yourself to your own fitness desires I would definitely recommend having a buddy, spouse, trainer etc. to help keep you on the course in a positive way!! The time is right to take a second look at some of the tried and true wine regions of the world. Odila Galer-Noel with Frederick Wildman Wines has some good advice. “We’ve been so enthralled discovering new wines from new regions we’ve kind of set aside those traditional wines and regions from France, Spain, Italy and Greece”, says Galer-Noel. Spain is a good place to start when it comes to easy drinking great value wines, in both red and white. “Crianzas are straight forward red wines, spicy and warm and under $13. Even reservas which have spent a few more years softening up in the bottle making the wine more lush and round, they are still under 20 and a great price.” A good starter is the El Coto de Rioja Crianzamedium bodied, smooth with notes of dark fruit and spice. Don’t forget about France either. “Rhone is making a comeback with some great values. Look for the Cotes du Rhone, Liracs, Cotes du Ventoux, whites and roses as well as red blends are lively and pack a lot of flavor for twenty dollars or less”, says Galer-Noel. “There are delicious and affordable reds and whites from the Burgundy region too, where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are the star grapes.” Galer-Noel says many long time producers like Olivier Le Flaive and Joseph Faively offer classic Burgundy wines at new world wine prices.

Backyard Wildlife Just as the Broad Ripple Gazette illuminates with facts, anecdotes, photos, and interesting articles of the Village, I would like to share some FYI data about the backyard wildlife that you can see around the streets and parks of the area. • 392 species of birds have been seen in Indiana • Birders sponsored by Backyard Birds did a study of the birds visiting at a neighboring lake for one year and identified more than 70 species of birds and ducks. • The cardinal is our state bird and the bordering states except Michigan. The crested male is red, and the female is a beautiful tawny brown with blushes of red. • You will see a variety of ducks on the canal and the lakes. Most of our Canada geese do not migrate in the winter. • It is very common to see Red-tailed hawk in the area. This large bird is carnivorous, and an opportunistic feeder finding small mammals such as rodents, but they will also consume birds, fish, reptiles, and amphibians. They can be used in falconry. • If you see a large gray bird, check to see if it is a mockingbird. These entertainers can have from 53-150 themes as their songs. Their repertoire can keep you up at night if your windows are open. • The robin (the brown bird with an orange belly) does not migrate although it is considered a harbinger of spring. When the ground thaws, the worms are easier to find but in the winter, they will flock around the flowering fruit trees heavily laden with frozen berries. • It’s very possible to see our national symbol, the bald eagle, flying along the White River. They are no longer strangers in the village. • If you are out and about at night, you may see the night hawks flying around parking lots or you may even hear the Great Horned Owl hoot or the call, “Who cooks for you? Who cooks for you-all?”of the Barred Owl. • Starling and Grackles are especially plentiful when there is snow cover. You can use Google to figure out the difference! They are not the same bird and are often confused.

They have two litters a year and have on average three babies in each litter. • On the White River, be on the lookout for cranes, ducks, deer, muskrat, fox and herons in addition to the usual numbers of fox and gray squirrels, turtles, and groundhogs. • Blue Herons are the long and large silhouettes you might see if you look up. Although they are usually found on the banks of the river, they will visit residence fish ponds. Although it is fun to people-watch in Broad Ripple, the village and surrounding area offers challenges for those who enjoy watching and observing nature. It’s fun to see the visitors observing all the wild life (birds, animals, or people!) on the streets of Broad Ripple Village. •

Don Colvin, Deputy Director of Indy Parks Planning, presented some renderings of potential improvements to the dog park. Those improvements include artificial turf, specifically designed for dogs, to be put in at the most heavily used area of the dog park (right near the entrance where it is currently a muddy/sandy area). He had different types of turf samples for people to see and feel and explained the process of how it all works and how it would be installed. He then moved on to talking about agility equipment. He had some pictures of different styles and on the renderings he had some potential placements that could be a good flow through the dog park. Lastly, he talked about extending the fence on the eastern border of the dog park out about 10 feet (almost to the property line) which would increase the size of the dog park about 10,000 sq ft. Don opened the floor to questions and comments. The open forum was a mixed bag of opinions. The first few people who commented were not for the artificial turf. Don had to clarify that really our only options at this point would be to do the turf or to leave it how it is. In the past it’s been seeded, it’s been over seeded, he’s laid sod down, and year after year it just becomes a muddy mess (from the grass going dormant in the winter months when we still have people and dogs walking all over it, so it just dies). Don explained how most new dog parks are putting artificial turf in their parks because of the longevity and durability of it. He gave the name of a park in Cincinnati, Washington Park, that has it and

encouraged the attendees to look it up and look more into the turf. One major item that was brought up by attendees was getting a shelter with benches at the dog park. Don said he looked very much into it and gave the cost rundown for it. A small dog park was requested by several people, asking if the satellite dog park behind the Family Center could be turned into a small dog park. Don said that that could be doable, but major upgrades to it would have to be done, leaving no money for the main dog park improvements. Final decision on the dog park will not be open for a vote, but Don does want to get preferences from the members, so he did go around the room taking preferences. I think this was a great opportunity for people to see the reality of how far the $15,000 will get us (which isn’t very far). Members asked how they could be more involved and how they could do more fundraising. I told them of 1 or 2 potential events in the future that we may have (we’re still working out all the details) for fundraising. I also invited them to join the Friends of Broad Ripple Park, which is a great way to become more involved, not just with the dog park, but with Broad Ripple Park as a whole. The Friends of Broad Ripple Park meet every 3rd Wednesday of the month at 6:45pm at the Broad Ripple Park Family Center.
