Crossroads of America Scout Band - 100 By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com John Valdez is the Chair for the Crossroads of America Scout Band’s 100th Anniversary Celebration. He recently discussed how his scouting and musical backgrounds crossed paths. “I was active in scouting and knew about the band since the Director (Harvey U. Gill) lived near me and I cut his grass. I got into the Scout Band in 1982 after graduating from Ball State University in 1981, majoring in Commercial Art and minoring in Music. I’ve been with them since 1982 and am basically, the only adult that helps out with the percussion section. I play all percussion, but more times than not, the drum set. I grew up in Indianapolis and started playing drums in grade school, then at Arlington High School and college, where I played in the concert, marching, pep and jazz bands,” he explained. The Scout Band is preparing for several forthcoming events this season. “We will play for the Mini-Marathon downtown at the starting line, which we have done for the past 15 to 20 years. I think that we are the only group that has played for this event every year since they started having entertainment. From probably 1957 to 1993, we played in every Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade in downtown Indianapolis the day before the race and we’re hoping to do that again this year. We have continued to go out to the track every year, playing at the race and marching around the track. To my knowledge, other than Purdue University, we are the only band that has continued that tradition every year at the invitation of Purdue University. I think that Speedway High School has done it many times. We have marched many more miles around the track than any other band in the world, especially for a nonhigh school band. We practice once a week,” Valdez mentioned. “During the month of August, for about the past twenty years, we have played for the wreath laying ceremony of Indiana’s only President, Benjamin Harrison, at Crown Hill cemetery. It’s very much appreciated because his descendants actually lay the wreath there. We have played a Christmas concert annually for about the past dozen years at the Indiana State Museum. In many cases, we might get a couple of weeks’ notice when we are asked to play. Most of the people involved in the Scout Band come from another scout unit around the area. We are Venture Crew 559, not a Boy Scout troop. We are called the Crossroads of America Scout Band because we have females in the band (previously called the Central Indiana Boy Scout Band), which started in the late 1970s. The band is composed of about three-fourths youth and about one-fourth adults. There was a time through the years, where we had as few as six or seven scouts in the band and in other years, there were as many as 150 in the band. It really varies with the times. We decided in the 1970s that it would be a good time to for parents to sit in with their kids to play and give guidance. Many times, I am just backing the percussion section, playing the snare, bass drum, cymbals or any number of percussion instruments. We have many youth and adults sit in with the band, but the percussion section is a different breed of musicians where we don’t always play the same instrument on each song. As an adult, I’ve had to act like a traffic cop, directing the scouts so that every part is covered for each song. I want to feature the scouts in the band – that’s what it is all about. I have played in the band for more than 30 years and am currently the equipment manager,” he noted. “The most rewarding thing about being in the Scout Band is working with the youth. The kids get excited before a performance. I used to feel that way before playing a concert as a boy. The fact that we have melded it with scouting makes it very unique. We are the oldest continuously operating scout band in the country (and possibly the world). The band has evolved since it started as a drum and bugle corps in 1917 by our founder F. O. Belzer. We probably did not have a full band until the late 1920s,” Valdez surmised. The Band celebrates a historic event later this year. “Our 100th anniversary concert will be at Camp Belzer on July 7th, playing in an outdoor arena that will include patriotic anthems as well as pop tunes, like the 1812 Overture with 2-75 mm Howitzer cannons from Fort Harrison. The Army National Guard will re-enact this, it will include all the bells as well. There are concert portions of the song where the bells go off that will be rung by parents and siblings of scouts in the band. It will probably be topped off with fireworks. That’s just one of the things we are planning during our week-long celebration from July 2nd to 8th,” he said. Bill Schofield, President of the Scout Band’s Belzer Scout Band Booster Club, said,

“I played French horn in the Scout Band as a youth back in the mid-1960’s until about 1970 until I went to college. I returned in 1992 for their 75th anniversary. I played in the Arlington High School concert band, marching band and orchestra. I was a Cub Scout and an Eagle Scout in Pack and Troop 62 which met at North United Methodist Church. My first tour was in 1963 when we went to Wheeling, West Virginia and the Centennial Celebration of Beckley, West Virginia. In 1964, the band went to the National Jamboree in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania with a stop at the New York World’s Fair. We returned to the World Fair in New York in 1965. Other tours that I went were a riverboat trip on the Ohio River that stopped at sights along the way in Cincinnati and Pittsburgh, and to a 1969 Scouts jamboree in Idaho,” he recalled. Elizabeth Howard, with two sons in the band, is one of the many parents that play in the Scout Band. “Zachary is the Scout Band Youth President and plays the alto sax. He and his twin brother, Xavier, joined in 6th grade in January, 2015. They went on tour that summer to Washington, D.C. where they played in a July 4th parade in front of the White House. The leadership there is unbelievable with their expectations and assistance in their activities with the kids. Zachary is currently working on the 100th anniversary events. Both boys enjoy every minute of it. Xavier wanted to play the French horn in the school band, but was discouraged; however, the Scout Band had an extra French horn and invited him to play it. Now, he’s a first chair French horn player in the school band. Zachary wanted to start playing the baritone saxophone and they encouraged him to try it. It’s so incredible that the Scout Band encourages the members to try new instruments. They can take the instruments home and practice them. It’s exciting for them to say that they have two instruments to play. In 2016, they went on a tour that included Illinois, Iowa and Wyoming. It’s a great organization. I joined the Scout Band a year ago because I played the clarinet when I was in high school. They ask parents to play in the band as well. My daughter, who plays the piano, goes to the practices and is interested in the band, too,” she said. Their music has taken the band outside Indiana extensively. “We have gone on tour annually. The band has played in 47 out of our 50 states, visiting Canada six times and England twice. I found some historical information where a portion of the band traveled to Hungary for a World Jamboree back in the 1940s. We’ve probably had more Eagle Scouts come through the band than any other unit throughout the council. Our alumni may be close to 10,000 people and of that, a good number are Eagle Scouts. Even today, we have a lot of girls in the band that are in Girl Scout Troops. The U.S. is the only country in the world that has the boys and girls organizations separate from each other. It may be possible that Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts may join together in a scout organization someday,” Valdez said. According to www.scoutband.com, the Crossroads of America Scout Band’s website, Francis O. Belzer was Indianapolis’ first Scout executive, who formed a drum and bugle corps in 1917 with Campbell Bailey as director. By the 1920s, it had expanded into a full band with Henry Schprengfeil, director of the Indianapolis Military Band, as the new director. Venture Crew 559 is for members aged 14 to 21 who do not have a troop of their own and for members who wish to be involved with the Venture Scout Program. The Crossroads of America Scout Band is open to all youth who play band instruments. If a musician does not belong to a troop, they may join Venture Crew 559 or can be assisted in finding a troop. Practices are every Sunday afternoon from 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m. at Saint Lawrence Catholic School at 46th & Shadeland Avenue on the Northeast side of Indianapolis. New members are welcome at every practice.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Mayor rides the bus, chats about the Ripple I hopped on the #18 bus for a ride downtown on March 17 and there was Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett. He was riding the bus to the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. He was also riding in honor of Transit Driver Appreciation Day (transitdriverday. org). I had a long chat with the Mayor who was very upbeat on the new developments in Broad Ripple that will add to daytime pedestrian traffic. This includes the new Coil

Apartments and Fresh Thyme Farmers Market (at College Avenue and the canal) which open April 1. As we rode by the newly revitalized Tarkington Park (39th and Illinois), he noted his administration was investing in capital improvement in Indy Parks, something that had not been done for many years. Indeed, the new playground in the park is a gem. We discussed potholes. In economic development news, he noted Salesforce was taking over the Chase Tower and hiring 500 new employees.

Spring wildflowers abound around the Ripple Spring has sprung and the spring wildflowers are in bloom. They are called spring ephemerals here in the East because they have to bloom before the trees get their leaves and crowd the sunlight.

Broad Ripple has multiple areas to view the spring beauties (an actual name of one of the flowers). • On the high ridges of Marott Park (75th and College) you will find the yellow trout lilies. Later in the spring the park is full of wood poppies with their bright yellow flowers. • Over at Broad Ripple Park, the woodlands north of the Tennis Courts also feature many spring wild flowers. • Holliday Park has the best display of flowers. They also have white trout lilies. Hurry, you only have the month of April. Once the leaves on the trees come out, many of the showy flowers pack up shop. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the center which contains 1-3-7-9. The 8 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces above the 9. The 8 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces below the 1. The only place left is between the 3-7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Ode to a Street I grew up two blocks away from North College Avenue. This street has been an integral part of our city’s history as much as it has come to represent progress with the future routing of the red line. So here is a bit of history. Indianapolis was founded in 1820 and became the state capitol in 1825. Alexander Ralston and Elias Pym Fordham surveyed and designed the original grid pattern for the new town of Indianapolis, which was platted in 1821. Ralston’s plan extended outward from Governor’s Circle, now called Monument Circle, a large circular commons at the center of town. Ralston had a system of naming streets in this new city by dividing it into an orderly grid: Meridian Street (the north south axis of the city which begins 0 East/West) was a dividing street. All streets west of Meridian were named for western states. All streets east of Meridian are named for eastern states. If you look at the plat map, you can barely make out the street we call College. The earliest street to challenge the Ralston system was Capitol. Because of the location of the new capitol building, Tennessee Street was renamed to Capitol Avenue in 1893. So as the city grew, the city fathers of the time decided to honor various institutions. Meet Ovid Butler, a major contributing early citizen, who was a lawyer and started a political and abolitionist newspaper, the Free Soil Banner. As a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Butler wanted to establish a university for his church. The Indiana General Assembly had to approve the university, and they did in 1850. North Western Christian University opened in 1855 where Ovid Butler served in leadership until 1877. The university opened in the area of 11th - 15th streets and the north south street was named College Avenue. Also in that area, streets in 1896 were renamed Christian Avenue (11th), Butler Street (12th), Home Avenue (13th) and Lincoln Avenue (15th). Mr. Butler provided the property which is now the Near Northside. In 1875, the university was renamed Butler University in honor of its founder. It was moved to a 25-acre campus in Irvington, which at the time was an independent suburb of Indianapolis. My father actually attended this campus in the late 20’s. In 1928, the university moved again and classes began on a new, larger campus; its present site. My father also attended this campus built on the site of Fairview Park, a northwest side amusement park. He was a football player and carried hod (mortar for the bricks) for the Butler fieldhouse, now the historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. The name College Avenue has remained, honoring the college that lined its street. My early memories of College Ave are ones of delight. It had the Fairfield Bakery, Nickers Five and Dime, restaurants, drugstores, and movie theaters (Uptown, see below, and Vogue). Do you remember the Toddle House, Stationers, and Mandarin Inn (see Historic Ad on page 13)? They were our neighborhood business district. College Avenue was the street I crossed four times a day when I walked to and from PS66. Yes, young readers, we walked home for lunch and back again for afternoon school. We had one hour, and we couldn’t be tardy! My early memories of this street are still very strong. The growth of businesses

On March 16th, the Gazette found the Indianapolis Fire Department practicing firing a rope rescue launcher gun at Broad Ripple Park. The rope could be fired out to a boater in need of rescue.

It has had horse and wagons, street cars, autos and trucks traverse its expanse. Bicyclers and walkers who traverse the street today can see the houses that remain and have seen the times change. The years have passed, and College Avenue remains. We know her as one of the major arteries to the village, and we can celebrate her longevity and history.
