Our Local Record Stores - inspired by NRSD, see page 8 By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com Indy CD & Vinyl co-owner Andy Skinner, World Record Shoppe proprietor Keith Reinart and Luna Music owner Todd Robinson each spoke on the record about their music stores. Skinner co-owns and manages Indy CD & Vinyl with his wife, Annie, at 806 Broad Ripple Avenue. “Annie worked in the store in its prior location in Utah. She moved here in 2001 from Salt Lake City when previous owner Rick Zeigler (Gazette columnist 2006-2011) brought the store to Broad Ripple. When he was retiring in late 2013, he offered the shop to purchase from him. So, we bought it and renovated it, but everything else stayed the same. Rick and Annie had a long professional relationship and he and I were close as well, so buying the store was a natural progression for all of us,” he explained. Andy met Annie in the store when they were introduced by a mutual friend, who remains close to them. They have been married for 11 years. When asked about new vinyl pricing, he discussed the economics and marketing of vinyl records and their resurgence. “Over the years, independent record stores have continued carrying vinyl records with compact discs. When there was a decline in sales in the early 1990s, there were some companies that stopped manufacturing vinyl records because they didn’t want to take the risk of not selling what they made. The biggest change and why many larger retailers stopped carrying vinyl altogether, is the distributors stopped accepting unsold records (returns) from retailers. Now with the resurgence of vinyl’s popularity, there is a little bit of a bottleneck with the production process, causing some record prices to go up. This pricing gets passed along to retailers and we then have to pass it on to customers. Some more vinyl manufacturers have come online, but increasing production depends on finding more record pressing The photo by Mario Morone plates and machines. Annie and Andy Skinner co-own Indy CD & Vinyl. Holy Grail is looking for mothballed record pressing machines that can be restored and be used to help the bottleneck. We have some manufacturers here in the U.S., but demand is currently outstripping production, resulting in some higher prices that you see,” he noted. This may have leave some customers singing the blues. “At Indy CD & Vinyl, we offer deep selections of every genre of titles. We order and carry just about everything and are also bolstering our children’s music section. We make it a kidfriendly environment here, where we have a Kid’s Day once a month with a live performer. This will be true even on National Record Store Day (NRSD) when we will have two hours of kid’s music, face painting and games,” Skinner said. Indy CD & Vinyl notably has a kid’s play area in the back of their store so children can play while parents and older siblings can shop. He continued, “There will be live bands scheduled and food trucks will provide refreshments.” A list of bands and more information is on page 8. “I think there is a good future for independent record stores. I find our store is a community center a lot of times. This place is like a local newspaper,” Skinner surmised. With their musical selection, there is always something new to discover at Indy CD & Vinyl, whose hours are Monday through Saturday Noon a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday Noon to 6 p.m. Inquiries about specific music titles or genres can be answered at (317) 259-1012. In addition to Indy CD & Vinyl (www.indycdandvinyl.com), Andy and Annie own A-Squared (www.asquaredindustries.com), a marketing and promotion company specializing in problem solving. Their clients have included Indianapolis Motor Speedway, The Vogue and Live Nation. He is also a business manager at Butler Toyota. Keith Reinart opened World Record Shoppe in 1979 at 5218 Keystone Court. His 800-square foot location sells blues, classical, gospel, contemporary and classic jazz, musicals, reggae, rock and soul. “When I was younger, I had many different jobs, mostly in the entertainment industry, but have always had an ear for music. I was formerly a Billboard Magazine reporter, manufacturer’s representative, photo by Mario Morone worked in radio and with Keith Reinart opened World Record Shoppe in 1979. musical artists. March zoning issues at BRVA meeting By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com Approximately 25 were in attendance at the March 28th public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee that was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. There were four items on the agenda followed by one private item for the committee members. The agenda items, taken from the BRVA website, are published below in bold. Pictures of each property are at www.broadripplegazette.com A. 6320 College Avenue, George Dury representing RGB Realty regarding a variance of use to provide for a medical urgent care, dental and general medical use (not permitted), with an addition to the existing building. Hearing before the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals April 11 at 1 p.m. This is the location that was most recently First Financial Bank [E2 on map]. The petition is to open an urgent care facility run by a major hospital provider. The provider’s name was withheld from the presentation. The only external, structural changes to the building are planned for the drive-thru on the south side of the building. It will be enclosed. The committee voted unanimously to support this petition. B. 5901 College Avenue, Donald Acheson representing Eugene Pizzi regarding a variance to provide for a pergola addition over an existing sidewalk cafe, with a zero-foot front setback (10-foot setback required) Hearing before the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals April 4 at 1 p.m. This petition is to build a pergola over the sidewalk dining on the College side of Ambrosia Ristorante [KK23 on map]. The committee voted unanimously to support this petition. C. 838 E. 65th Street, Mark Jones regarding the establishment of a Reggioinspired preschool (The Sapling School) at this location. This item was for information only, as no approvals from the city are required. The Sapling School, a year-round preschool, will open soon in the old Editions Limited location [C4 on map]. A playground will be constructed, but no other major changes are planned for the property. D. 6357 & 6371 Guilford Avenue, David and Justin Kingen representing Chris Short and Tom English requesting a rezoning the property from C-4 to MU-2, a variance of the clear site triangle, a variance for building height and an encroachment license needed. Hearing before the Metropolitan Development Hearing Examiner has been continued to April 13 at 10 a.m. This was the 3rd or 4th appearance of this petition before the BRVA committee. Several changes have been made to the proposal to raze the two houses at 64th and Guilford and build a four-story building. The building design is now smaller and there is more green space. The emphasis is now on the Guilford side. Parking and set-back variances are no longer needed due to the redesign. The committee still had many concerns with the latest design and asked for more information to be presented at the April meeting. The next public meeting of the BRVA Land Use and Development committee is scheduled for Tuesday, April 25, at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map].

the store and play their music for me. I’ve worked in a retail background from the time I was 15 to 18 years old. It’s a generational business. I have customers I’ve known for 30 to 40 years who have followed me from different locations. Some people return to visit out of nostalgia. I see their lives, marriage, divorces, births, deaths, relationships and changes in their lives. There are thousands of customers that I’ve known over the years. It’s been an interesting life. I’ve been offered other jobs over the years and even been asked to be in politics, but this has been a drug of choice,” he mentioned. Hundreds of records in the back of the store include Phil Collins’ Face Value and No Jacket Required, The Doors’ Morrison Motel, The Kinks’ State of Confusion, Emerson Lake and Palmer’s Trilogy, Sting’s Nothing Like the Sun and Pete Townsend’s All the Best Cowboys have Chinese Eyes in addition to picture disks of the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Yesterday and Today. In addition to LPs, World Record Shoppe sells 12” singles, (45s) 7” singles, cassettes, VHS movies, DVDs, burners, incense, oils, carved boxes, record sleeves, cleaners, shot glasses, mugs, decals, bumper stickers, cigarette cases & lighters, ryo (roll your own) papers, black lights & posters, new & old releases, pipes, ashtrays, grinders, scales, hats and more. World Record Shoppe was the first store in Indiana to sell compact discs and has always been a pioneer or leader in the U.S. with most genres of music with formats such as 12” singles, Beta, VHS, laser discs, digital tape, pagers, cell phones, prepaid cards and the establishment of the CD. “There was an episode where I was asked to help some major companies with their internal problems. I created my own position and reorganized their retail stores and helped at the warehouse. Distributors took care of the retail operations and I had a blast. I helped establish what is known as the 12” single format. The 12” single was a new format that took years to establish because the customer didn’t understand it and manufacturers didn’t like it because it sold for $3.99 when albums sold for $10. But, it established musical genres like funk, disco, hip-hop and rap. It was hard to talk retailers into carrying it. We built displays that explained the 12” single, why it existed and created a chart for the store to inventory. We agreed to accept 100% returns with retailers to get it established. We made specials to displays, created charts, reviews and definitions. There were a lot of artists (hundreds) like Prince and Madonna who got established by this format or resurrected careers like Michael Jackson, ZZ Top, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner and Barbra Streisand. Hip-hop music was established with efforts from WTLC, Indianapolis Record Pool. Almost any major or minor hip-hop or club music artist would contact WRS to sell their music. WRS had the power and ability to break and make hits throughout the 80s and 90s,” Reinart recalled. “I was in the office with the buyer for a major distributor in 1979. The Warner Brothers representative visited and said, ‘We don’t know what to do with this project. We’ve got this new artist, Prince.’ He said, ‘Keith you’re the guy…what do we do with this?’ The WB representative played it and I said, ‘This is very good. Can’t you get him to change his [album] cover or his name?’ I started calling accounts all over the U.S. Nobody would carry the record. [The cover] was ugly. There was prejudice against this album from EVERY single type of store. We had to ship it to them free on consignment and guaranteed 100% percent returns. I took it to WTLC. They played it and the rest is history. Who knows? If that didn’t happen, there might not have been Prince,” Reinart noted. World Record Shoppe’s hours are Monday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday Noon to 5:00 p.m. Their number is (317) 253-5812. Luna Music owner Todd Robinson described his store at 5202 N. College Avenue [PP23 on map]. “I started Luna (on West 86th Street) back in 1994 after visiting my brother here from Ohio. One of the things that I always used to do growing up was go record shopping. At the time, I expressed disappointment that there wasn’t a record shop in town that I could go to. In high school, I cut my teeth working at a Dayton, Ohio record store. Eventually, either I had to get a job at a record label or open a store of my own. I decided to move to a capital city (Indianapolis) and come up with the idea of opening a retail store in 1994. One of my earliest memories is playing the Boxtops record, “The Letter,” he reminisced. Robinson described the store’s selection: “We stock a lot of different music. We establish a rapport with the customer at the counter, photo by Mario Morone asking where they heard Luna Music at 52nd and College Avenue opened in 2006. about the music they are purchasing. It’s about what the customer wants that determines how we stock the shop.” He mentioned some of Luna’s Music events for NRSD, “As far as the performers, (see page 8) we have a fanatically solid band line-up from Noon to closing time. There will be variety of music from hip rip to rock and punk. We will be producing 70-year technology by using a hard piece of plastic where one copy of a single is cut in real time from a song played by a band or solo artist. It’s like a local album project. Music performances will begin at Noon behind the record shop when Upland Brewing will begin serving beer. La Margarita restaurant will bring their taco truck at 11 a.m. Sometimes the line leading into the store crests at about 150200 people in the morning before we open at 8 a.m. We sell special record store releases and we do special glow-in-the-dark keychain. I am also a board member of a coalition that runs record stores all through the country. Hiss Golden Messenger will be playing with proceeds from their performance going to the ACLU. Service and Michael Raintree will be performing as well. They give us tracks that are unreleased and we record them.” The most rewarding thing about my work is the people I work with. If I didn’t have a fun, smart crew of employees, I wouldn’t be doing it. It’s the people that make the difference,” Robinson noted. Luna Music’s (www.lunamusic.net) hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. To inquire about specific titles, call (317) 283-5862. You can discover diverse genres of music at Indy CD & Vinyl, World Record Shoppe and Luna Music.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

It’s Record Store Day time – and the tenth annual one to boot! You’ve heard me say this – for about ten years now – that Record Store Day is the sure sign of spring for me. Not only are there exclusive RSD deals and fabulous in-store concerts, the great conversations happening on the sidewalk outside of the stores and the sense of community makes me uber-proud to live in this neighborhood. A little trivia – according to Record Store Day rules, the stores cannot open earlier than 8:00 am – not that folks won’t be lined up well before then. Read on for details of the events in Broad Ripple and beyond.

There weren’t any details about Karma Record’s RSD activities available at press time, but I wanted to be sure and include them since they are Indianapolis’ oldest record store, opening in 1970. When my father was ten he was baptized and he also made a commitment to Christian ministry. He was considered very young to make such a commitment, but in his heart he knew that was what he wanted to do. Not long after, dad began attending an adult Bible study a couple of miles from his home. The members of the Bible study soon became enamored with the little man who knew his Bible and was willing to walk two miles to participate. My earliest memories of my father’s ministries came in my birth town of Columbus, Ohio. My father was the pastor of Southwood Christian Church near the heart of the city. We lived in a parsonage close to the church. At the time, my father was working on his Doctorate of Ministry and he chose as his dissertation Working With Widows. Dad assembled a cheerful army of widows for the project. These widows loved each other and they LOVED my father. The widows were extremely active in the church. My fondest memories of this special group developed after church on Sundays. We would eat at Schmidt’s Sausage House in German Village. In no time, the place would be roaring with laughter. I can almost taste the cream puffs as I write. Ten years ago I was moving from Cleveland, Ohio, to Miami Beach. Dad and I decided to get together in Columbus to reminisce before I headed south. We arrived on a Saturday and met with Betty Weber, one of our favorite widows. She called up another widow and said, “You need to come to church tomorrow.” The other widow said, “Now Betty, you know I can’t do that. I’m 90 years old and I have artificial hips and knees. Plus, I just had open heart surgery. The doctor told me that the next time I leave the house could be my last.” Betty said, “Carl Pruitt will be there with his son Chip.” The other widow said, “I’ll be there!” At that moment I learned that a loving heart and commitment to a righteous cause will make a lasting impression. Trail along Williams Creek closed next 3-4 years The Marott Park trail along Williams Creek will be closed for habitat restoration for the next 3-4 years according to IndyParks. This will allow the area to rehabilitate. Otherwise, the land steward said it would cost millions to quickly repair the badly eroded hillside. Unfortunately, it makes hiking through the park difficult. Also at the Park, workers removed invasive plants along the fence and then cut down all the trees along the southern edge of the Park. The contractors told me removing the invasives led to the need to cut down the trees as well as exposing the fence (and leading to a pile of trees.) In any event, it is an eyesore.

Pick your nomination for worst pothole The roads in BR have a lot of potholes but my pick for the worst is the mini-crater at 65th and Westfield on the northwest corner. It’s been there for several months. It’s more of a crater than a pothole. It sometimes has an orange cone in it warning drivers, sometimes not. On April 7, it had two orange cones. bulbs which was done last October by 300 volunteers. They have also added a beer garden and extended their hours until 9 p.m. Thursday-Saturday. The beer garden is in the old conservatory which sold plants. They have put in a new showcase garden in that parking lot (near Michigan Avenue). (Unfortunately, they are no longer selling plants for your garden there.) To avoid the $18 entrance fee to have a brew and enjoy the flowers, memberships are a more cost effective way to visit the IMA. An individual annual membership is $55. (I still say that $18 is too high and as a cyclist I miss not being able to ride through the Park. The IMA was $7 then went to free, then jumped to $18. It’s a stretch.) In other IMA newsComing this summer the Museum has added Saturday movies to their Friday night outdoor movie series. You can also buy season tickets. Unlike years ago, the movies frequently sell out so it is hard to just show up to see them. I’ll be there to see my favorite Priscilla-Queen of the Desert. Finally, the IMA will have its semi-annual spring native plant sale on April 28. Welcome Fresh Thyme Have you been to the new Fresh Thyme? They even have a community room for community events. I can’t wait for the nearby path along the canal to open.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 2 in the left section of the bottom row which contains 1-3-4-6-7. The 2 in the middle section of the bottom row eliminates the space between the 6-7. The 2 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 3. The only place left is to the right of the 4. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Wines for the Times Indianapolis-based Easley Winery released a set of tasteful and thought provoking wines last fall. Just in time for the election. I THINK and NO OPPOSITION are blends of red wine grapes. Each offer up their own personalities and strength and flavor. Each are based on wine grapes that were brought to the U.S. from other countries but have found success and fans and their own flair thanks to American soil. I THINK is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon aged in French Oak barrels. Deep red fruit aromas and flavors with hints of vanilla and clove. NO OPPOSITION brings Zinfandel (which many claim IS an American grape though research shows similar grapes grow in Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary) and Cabernet together in a bold ripe offering of spicy dark red fruit. The labels are as engaging as the wines. As are the notes on the back of the bottles. “If ignorance is bliss then knowledge is a challenge”. These wines are meant to be shared with friends and foes. Swirl, Sip, THINK. Mother Nature once again knows best. www.easleywinery.com

Vol. 14 No. 8
Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Inspiration in the Heart of Broad Ripple Inspiration abounds if you just look or seek. I find it most often from nature and my backyard. But recently, I read about a series, “Walk the Talk,” that appealed to me. It is a speaker series that is held in the Village’s yard, The Vogue Theater. After attending my first evening of inspiration, a program about Compassion, I was delighted to see this motivational Ted-inspired talk bubble up in our community. If you don’t know Ted Talks, you might want to access the Internet, and search for Ted Talks (Ted.com). TED is a nonpartisan, nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 110 languages. Indianapolis has also hosted a day-long TEDX for the business community. But now, two local men, Steve Ross (owner of the Vogue and seeker) and Richard Brendan (WICR radio personality and Counselor/Teacher) both had a vision to bring local, passionate speakers who will address a common theme to tell how they “Walk Their Talk.” Their words become food for the soul, and their images and words inspire the audience. I asked Steve how this all came about. This project was realized to fulfill his spiritual quest. His dream was to provide a platform for people to share the stories of their spiritual journey with others who are also seeking. The story format (usually 10 minutes per speaker) is accompanied by impactful slides or videos that punctuate their personal journeys. How it works is Steve and Richard announce a topic (like Gratitude, Love in Action, Compassion, or Miracles). Through social media and direct contact, potential speakers audition for the event. After they are notified, they rehearse. “Ted Talks require their speakers to practice 400 hours,” said Steve. Wow! On the evening of the performance at the Vogue, chairs fill the dance floor. The bar is open, but not flooded, because the audience in coming for soul words, not drink! A band opens for the performance. Along with confetti, the band introduces each speaker. The stories of each of the six speakers move the evening along so fast that I felt like I had just sat down. The finale was highlighted by a balloon drop to celebrate the wisdoms of the night, and the audience mingles to share their thoughts. This is the first year for Walk the Talk: Creating an epic shift. Steve and Richard have put together a meaningful evening for speakers and audience. The synergy of the night is different from most events that happen at the Vogue. The future topics of the series are Positive Thinking, Life’s Purpose, and Forgiveness. They assured me they will not be running out of topics. If you want more information or to see prior talks, go to their website, www.walkthetalkseries.com. You can also follow them on Facebook where they have individual segments spotlighted in addition to audition and event information. I wanted to capture Steve’s story during my interview with him. He told me had has owned the Vogue Nightclub for 31years. Why did he go in this direction? He grabbed a notebook where he had handwritten a list of his vision and goals. He read the first three to me. “1. Help people grow and learn, including myself. 2. Create a better world. 3. If I had the money, I’d want to make this event bigger and reach more people.” This is a man on a mission! Finally I asked him if he could personally invite people to the talk, what would he say? Steve answered thoughtfully, “Certain things move everyone’s soul. Walk the Talk is not religious or denominational…it appeals directly to the core of every human being. To create an epic shift, it has to begin with one person. We invite you to hear food for your soul and take away key learnings so you can walk your talk.” I was inspired by the speakers and the men behind the evening. I hope to see you at the next event, Positive Thinking, April 19th, 8:00pm at the Vogue. ($15) Take time to feed your soul and be open to creating an epic shift in your thoughts, heart, and actions.
