IPS holds meeting about school closures
The 5th Linear Bocce Tournament held in Indy and the second World Championship played out along the alleys from 42nd Street, north, between Broadway and Park on May 6. Play progressed north until there was one remaining player. The 2017 winner - Bond Sando. The 2017 tournament raised $1,450 for a new park in Fountain Square called The Idle. The sport was invented by IndyStar writer and playist Will Higgins (above, in the middle of the pack wearing sunglasses) in 2014. He continues to serve as commissioner of the governing body. alan@broadripplegazette.com The public meeting room at the Glendale branch of the Indianapolis Library was filled to capacity - about 200 packed the room. Representatives from the Indianapolis Public Schools explained the results of the task force that recommended the closing of three of Indianapolis’ seven public high schools. Thee seven schools (as of 2017-218 school year) are Broad Ripple, Tech, Washington, Arlington, Shortridge, Northwest, and Attucks. The plan is to hold several meetings, like this one at Glendale, then, in June, choose the schools to close. There would be public meetings through August pertaining to those schools. In September, the final IPS board vote would occur and the schools would be slated to close after the 2017-2018 school year. Next, the huge crowd broke up into about a dozen groups. Each group appointed a leader and then came up with a two minute “presentation”, consisting of
comments and questions about the proposed school closings. A few of the comments: - Why is this happening so fast? Announced in April, schools selected in September. - We have seen at past school closures some kids will not transition to the new schools, they will drop out. - Close the IPS administration building and move those offices to a high school. The longest-running home tour in Indiana, the Meridian-Kessler Home and Garden Tour, will be on June 2, 3, and 4, with the neighborhood’s theme, “Live, Work, Shop, Learn, Play, and Grow.” The 44th annual tour begins with a special Twilight Tour of two homes, 4304 Park and 4144 Ruckle, on Friday, June 2, from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Tickets ($65 through May 26; $75 thereafter) will also entitle participants to tour the eight Day Tour homes on June 3 or 4, as well as dinner (including appetizers, two free drinks, and a dessert bar), dancing, and a silent auction from 6 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at a party tent on the grounds of St. Joan of Arc School, 500 E. 42nd St. Reservations for the Twilight Tour are available at www.mkhometour.com. Online bidding will be available at the event via Qtego. Bidding may also be done by those not able to attend. Visit the home tour website for more information. The Day Tour, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, features eight homes: 4311 Meridian, 4115 Washington, 517 E. 57th, 5815 Carrollton, 5855 Carrollton, 3825 Ruckle, 5240 Delaware, and 4511 Broadway. Since 1999, MKNA has provided more than $300,000 in grants. The 2017 grants, totaling $15,000, include support for bikes for kids, art, gardens, health, and playgrounds. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

The Why Store was formed in the last 1980s in Muncie under a different name. A few months later Chris Shaffer joined the band and they renamed the band The Why Store, after a former Muncie haberdashery. The Why Store recorded two successful albums and signed to an MCA subsidiary that released their self-titled LP in 1996. Their major label debut produced several hits, was a Top 20 album for 1996, and sold 200,000 copies. The Why Store split up in 2000 citing creative differences, though each member has continued to play in different projects. In 2007, Shaffer has reincarnated The Why Store, they released an album and continue to play occasionally. Their shows are always big dance-y fun. Endiana is a classic four piece American rock band. They describe themselves as “on photo courtesy of Reverbnation.com the corner of Tornado Endiana and Gasoline alley…. [Their] songs breathe lust and bloodshed into the bitter air of the heartland.”

When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. My State Record Those close to me know about my state record. I speak of it often. It was 1986 and I was playing varsity baseball for Triton Central High School in Shelby County. It was my sophomore year, and I played first base. In practice, the coach worked with me on my pitching. All of our pitchers were juniors and seniors, so by working with me, he was thinking about the future of the team. I threw with decent velocity; however, my breaking ball did not break. Also, when I attempted to throw a change-up, I would often throw the ball over the backstop. I often felt sorry for our coach, as he had made such a questionable investment in our team’s future. Well into the season we were playing a home game against the small school of Shenandoah, which had mighty home run hitters. After two innings we were down 13-0. The coach then brought me in to pitch. It was clear to the team and all involved that our coach had lost all hope of winning. He just wanted to save the arms of the older (and better) pitchers. When I faced the first batter, I decided to take my chances and throw it down the middle of the plate. The guy clocked a homer over our short left field fence. The second batter was small and skinny. I thought that he wouldn’t do much damage. Big mistake! That little dude hit the ball so far over the center field fence (into the cornfield) that they never found the ball. The umpire reached down to get me a new ball and said, “That wuz tha farthest home run I ever seen!” I don’t remember how I pitched the next batter, but he homered too. The umpire called a time out so he could come to the mound to talk to me. He said, “I’ll tell ya how to pitch these guys. I go to all of their home games. Their high school is just 40 miles from my home.” It was a little disconcerting for me to realize that my opponents’ bigger fan was umpiring the game. The ump’s advice did little good. I gave up seven home runs in just two innings. The next day I learned of my record in a rather large article in the Indianapolis Star. So, my state record is the following: Most Home Runs Conceded by a Pitcher in a High School Varsity Game in the State of Indiana. This record may never be broken. If it is, maybe the new record holder should give me a call. I will share my sympathy. And maybe, just maybe, we can share some laughs. BR Pool opens May 27 It’s almost summer and the Broad Ripple Pool will open Memorial Day weekend. Hurry though because the pool usually closes the first week of August. Also at the Broad Ripple Park, the outdoor summer concerts are starting. The first outdoor concert will be on being Friday, May 19th at 6:30pm where Flatland Harmony Experiment will be performing.

Dare to be Aware….of Climate Change According to Tech Times, over one-hundred million people living in coastal regions will be displaced by just a one-yard rise in sea levels due to melting glaciers. 97% of scientists strongly believe this is because of the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, creating a change in global or regional climate patterns— therefore, heating the planet. For many, this phenomenon is given the title, “Climate Change.” But there are some who have dismissed the reality of things and who have convinced themselves that these conditions are in some way pseudo. Our objective is to inform our fellow stewards of this planet on the validity of this matter and to forewarn them of the desolating possibilities for the future. Temperatures on Earth have increased approximately 1.4 degrees since the early twentieth century. All three major global surface temperature reconstructions show that 15 of the 16 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001. In addition to this, for three consecutive years now, the planet has experienced record temperatures, 2014 being named the hottest year in history, followed by 2015 and then 2016 acclaiming that entitlement also. Global sea level rose about 6.7 inches in the last century, however, the rate in the last decade is nearly double that of the last century. Both the thickness and extent of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly over the last several decades. Glaciers are retreating in most areas around the world including in the Alps, Himalayas, the Rockies, Andes, Africa, and Alaska. These are all prime examples of how the climate is undoubtedly changing and how these changes are occurring in an extremely rapid manner—so brisk that is has become an international dilemma. The question still remains as to what could happen if no global preservation efforts are put into place. Greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere are expected to continue to increase, most likely influencing an increase in Earth’s average temperature, reduced ice, snow cover, and permafrost. Additionally, an increase of acidity in the oceans and the frequency, duration, and/or intensity of extreme weather/Earth related natural disasters are predicted to occur. Along with higher sea levels and shifted ecosystem characteristics, scientists also believe that the way the Earth is so intensely changing will impose increased threats to human health. This is presumed to be a byproduct of the carbon in the air that is penetrating and depleting essential layers of the atmosphere, specifically the Ozone layer. These protective layers help keep out destructive electromagnetic waves from the sun, such as ultraviolet rays. These rays, as you may know, cause sunburn and can lead to deadly cancers and illness later in life. When these defensive layers are subtracted from, the effects of the rays that can now reach the Earth would be extremely consequential. As is probably most obvious, the rapidly rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have resulted in sea level rise, stronger storms, global warming, more droughts, and a loss of sea ice. If these conditions continue to progress and become worst, the possibilities for the future become more and more devastating. It is fundamental and almost our duty to inform others of these facts and to instruct them on how action must be taken to prevent further extremities for the future. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s learn another, more complex, two-step, way to solve. On the easy puzzle, we see that the 1 in the center section would eliminate the two spaces to the left of the 2 in the right section of the middle row. The 1 in the right section of the top row would eliminate the space between the 2-3 in the right section of the middle row. This means the 1 will eventually go in one of the two spaces to the left of the 3 in the right section of the middle row. We can use this eventual 1 placement to eliminate the spaces to the right of the 8 in the left section of the middle row. The 1 in the center section eliminates the spaces to the right of the 3 in the left section of the middle row. This only leaves the space to the left of the 4 for a 1 here! I am a wine drinker, not a collector. But one of the first wineries I got to know when I started doing more wine related journalism 20 years ago was Dry Creek Vineyards in Sonoma County. Dave Stare started the winery in the 70’s and his daughter Kim and her husband Don joined the business in the 90’s. DCV’s long time former marketing director had a Broad Ripple connection so on one of my early trips to Sonoma County to judge a wine competition, they invited me to pay a visit. That day turned into a long time friendship and sincere appreciation for DCV wines. They make a broad palate of wines, most to drink now but some that do become richer and deeper with time. I’ve held back a few of those gems and this is the year to open and share some of them. Recently I gathered a group of friends and neighbors to indulge in an eclectic array of wines including a few special DCV bottles. We weren’t disappointed. 2006 Somers Ranch Zinfandel - the nose on this was enchanting. Ripe red currant, raspberry and roses, plus a hint of white pepper. Silky, smooth, rich and ripe with red fruit and exotic spice it was still very much alive after an extra 11 years of aging. 2007 Somers Ranch Zinfandel - Like the 2006, it also offered up an enticing nose of fruit and spice, but on the palate this one had a touch more toasty oak and spice than fruit. I love that the same vineyard can produce exceptional wines two years in a row but Mother Nature’s upper hand made this bottle a bit softer and subtle. 2014 Old Vine Zinfandel - This bottle is still widely available and highly recommended for indulgent drinking now and will age to a throttled down version with another 8-10 years in your cellar. Big bold juicy plum, currant, black cherry with white peppery spice and pronounced toasty oak. Enjoy with bold cheeses, grilled burgers or tuna or spicy mole.

Most of our current readers have not seen Brandt’s columns from the early days of the Broad Ripple Gazette when we only had 2500 readers (we now have 7000!). Here is a column from the first year of the Gazette - December 10, 2004.

I lived in the neighborhood even before Glendale was built. Murphy’s, Block’s, A&P, and Vonnegut’s Hardware were the major retailers. AFNB, Indiana National Bank, and Railroadmen’s were the banks of the day. All the county high school students went to Broad Ripple or Shortridge, and Broad Ripple was the only shopping area north of 38th Street.

Our yard had lots of wonderful birds and wildlife: bluebirds and purple martins, an abundance of cardinals, finches, and owls. Nights were silent - no city-street sounds. After all these years, this familiar neighborhood has transitioned from its rural feel with gravel roads coated with tar to an urban neighborhood of 60-yearold homes and gardens to match. Some of the fields birds have moved on, but Nature has been kind and left many varieties of birds to feed and watch from the window. In September I marveled at gold finches swaying on the sunflowers, filling their beaks with drying seeds. While the finches have disappeared along with summer, it’s quite the experience to see them changing from the eye-catching yellow and black to the grayish green for winter protection. They eat the seeds from flowers: sunflowers, zinnias, cosmos, coneflowers to name a few, but will gladly abandon blossoms for the abundance at the thistle feeder. If you have not attracted or fed finches before, try offering thistle. This requires a special feeder with smaller holes. Some finch feeders also allow upside down feeding with the food port below the perches. Other birds that like thistle but can’t hang upside down will not drain the feeder. Random Ripplings The Gazette found Erica Parker working on a mural at Broad Ripple Avenue and Carrollton. Erica said, “My partner, Rafael Caro, and I approached the building owner about the wall space between George’s Tacos and the Egyptian Hookah Bar. Our design is called “Astro”. It features a Labrador pup, some Indiana pines, and other abstract designs. We are using aerosol and hand-brushed paint. This mural is kicking off our new company, Blend Murals + Design. We are a small collective of Indy artists who hope to use their creativity to rejuvenate public spaces; whether it is a wall, storefront, or a sidewalk chalkboard.”
