alan@broadripplegazette.com Approximately 25 were in attendance at the May 23rd public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee that was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. There were two items on the agenda. A. 1428-1430 Broad Ripple Avenue, Sam Zinkan & Joe Zinkan - Developers, Garrett Lawton - Advisor, David Toth - Architect, regarding rezoning from C-3 to D-P for mixed use with first floor retail and multi-family units above. This item was presented for information only, as nothing had yet been filed with the City of Indianapolis. This proposal is to raze the buildings between Weaver’s Lawn and Garden and Broad Ripple Park along Broad Ripple Avenue. This would remove the dog groomer/e-cig building and the structures associated with the longgone Wake Up gas station. A new 5-story building with underground parking would be constructed on the site. The building would have 30 to 35 apartment units and

approximately 6,600 square feet of retail. The committee made several suggestions for the project, including reorienting the building to Broad Ripple Avenue to put the parking in back, to be in agreement with the Envision Broad Ripple plan. The developers expect to file a proposal with the City in June and would then come back before the BRVA committee for a local vote. B. 6357 & 6371 Guilford Avenue, David and Justin Kingen representing Chris Short an Tom English requesting a rezoning the property from C-4 to MU-2. Hearing before the Metropolitan Development Hearing Examiner has been continued to June 15 without notice, at 10:00 a.m. This project has been before the BRVA committee numerous times. It is a proposal to raze the two large houses on the south east corner of 64th and Guilford Avenue to erect a multi-story apartment/office/retail building. After the last presentation, an electronic vote was taken and the committee narrowly voted to not support the proposal. The petitioners decided to return to the committee this month with further explanations to see if the vote could be reconsidered. After a lengthy discussion, the committee decided not to hold a re-vote. (As clarification, the BRVA committee does not have legal jurisdiction on rezonings. The BRVA can appear at the hearing in the City-County Building to either support a petitioner or to remonstrate against a petitioner. It is the Department of Metropolitan Development that rules on zoning changes.) The next public meeting of the BRVA Land Use and Development committee is scheduled for Tuesday, June 27, at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map].

Brian Wheat is the owner and operator of Village Recording Studio at 841 Westfield Boulevard that opened in late March. “Village Recording produces music, podcasts, and audiobooks, as well as educational videos and live Internet broadcasts,” says Wheat. “I hope people find it to be friendly and affordable as well.” Wheat’s love for music and recording began at age 12 when he held a guitar for the first time. “My dad taught me a few chords and I was hooked.” He got a taste of the recording process in high school, when his band won two hours of recording time in a studio. “This was back in the days when Q95 had a radio show where they played local bands and people called in to vote on their favorite song played that evening. We won and in that brief time in the studio, I fell in love with the process of recording Village Recording Studio and producing and have done it in some form or another ever since,” 841 Westfield Blvd [G4 on map] he recalled. 317-432-4306 Wheat, a 20-year resident of www.villagerecording.com Warfleigh, dreamed of opening a studio here on many walks through bwheat@villagerecording.com Broad Ripple. “On one walk in late December 2016, I saw a ‘For Lease’ sign on one of the small shops in the Carter building on Westfield Boulevard. Later that night, I talked to Brian Moldt - my band mate in The Porchmen - about the idea. We quickly decided to partner together.” “Our location in the heart of Broad Ripple is an important part of the vibe I want to create,” says Wheat. “In the 1950s, when recording studios were just starting to emerge, they were very visible and often on main street. Sun Studios, for example, is located right on Union Street in Memphis,” he continued. “I like the social aspect of this visibility.” Wheat also has fond memories of Renee’s, the French restaurant that occupied the space many years ago. “When I first walked into this space, I had a flashback of having dinner with my wife over 15 years ago,” he reminisced. “Of course, music is a big part of what we do at Village Recording. We love working with artists to create music whether they are a singer/songwriter, instrumentalist, or a full band,” says Wheat. “I am currently working with a local singer/ Inside the recording booth. songwriter to help him bring his songs to life.” In addition to the technical side of things, Wheat is often asked for help with composing, arranging and even playing instruments, if needed. “I play bass and guitar so I am adding some of these tracks in addition to the singing and acoustic guitar tracks.” For more elaborate projects, the studio

is equipped with an arsenal of high quality virtual instruments including a full orchestra as well as pianos, synthesizers, drums, and special sound effects. In the past few years, Wheat has ventured into composing and producing music for TV, film and video. Wheat’s music has been heard on CBS, MTV, VH1, NBC, and E!, among others. “That’s another aspect of what we do at Village Recording – we work with producers to complete the audio side of video projects, whether it is recording a music soundtrack, doing voice-over, or adding sound effects. “I want to help Indiana filmmakers compete in Indie films - a properly recorded and mixed audio soundtrack can help locally-made films stand out among the crowd.” In addition to music, recording podcasts and audiobooks is becoming a big part of Village Recording services. “With today’s technology, anyone can have their own talk show,” says Wheat. “We have local business owners who are discovering that recording a monthly or weekly podcast is an affordable way to engage customers and drive more foot traffic into their shops.” Audiobooks were on the menu of services from the very beginning. “Our very first customer was a local author who is taking the self-published route on Amazon. Adding an audio format will increase sales and interest in the print version of her book as well,” he noted. The addition of video and live broadcasting has expanded Village Recording’s reach as well. “We bought technology to broadcast live on Facebook so a local singer-songwriter could do a live concert from Village Recording Studio and then take questions from the fans watching anywhere in the world.” Just recently, Wheat added “green screen” capabilities which has enabled them to produce tutorials, educational videos and even commercials. “We are working with a local automotive sales consultant to produce a series of tutorials on his unique approach to selling. “The ‘green screen’ allows his producer to insert background graphics and images in post-production to emphasize talking points” Recording inquiries can be answered at www.villagerecording.com, e-mailing Brian at bwheat@villagerecording.com or at (317) 432-4306. Wheat is a long-term area resident and plans to stay here. “I’ve lived in Broad Ripple since 1997 and seen it change quite a bit. Throughout the 90s, I was in several bands – Bangkok Rooster, Sam I Am, Moon, and Solving For X to name a few - that played around here. That was an exciting time for music in Broad Ripple,” says Wheat. “I really miss the Patio and the other venues. But I guess as long as we have the Vogue, Broad Ripple will always have a music scene to me. In a way, I want Village Recording to help bring back some of that vibe.”

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Canal Rubber Duck Race Sunday, June 25 Rainbow Bridge, Broad Ripple - all-ages, free, 3 - 5 pm

What time did the duck wake up? At the quack of dawn! I’ve been quacking myself up with all of the duck jokes swimming around my head. You might want to steer clear if you run into me at the duck race. I’m so excited about the duck race that I purchased my ducks ($5/each or 6/$25) already at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market - they’ll have them available at the Market, Broad Ripple Village Association office (6323 Guilford Ave, random hours), and at the race. Starting at 3 pm there will be activities for the kiddos including face painting, arts and crafts, [temporary] tattoos, and carnival games. Since the duck race is considered gambling (you’re buying a chance on a duck) you need to be at least 18 to purchase a duck. The rubber ducks will be launched from the Monon Trail bridge at 4:30 and race past the Rainbow Bridge towards the pedestrian bridge near College Ave. finish line.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. BurgerFuel is open at 6320 Guilford Avenue [G4 on map]. This is the first US location for the New Zealand-based restaurant. Above: Founder Chris Mason was spotted driving the very cool BurgerFuel hot rod around the Village.

Poetically speaking, the old Paco’s Cantina (on Broad Ripple Avenue) was one of my favorite spaces to work. The food was good, they had free refills on coffee and soda pop, and most important - it was open 24/7. Kyle Andrews and I spent many nights writing poetry there. One Sunday night we arrived at 10 P.M. and left Monday morning at sun up. As is his style, Kyle wrote his poems on napkins. When he finished, he had accrued about a four-inch stack of them. Here are two of the inspired works from that night: Socrates said Search, Lao Tzu said leave me BeThey took a walk, through everything And wound up here in meJesus faced the desert Buddha faced the KhanThey found their way within Still we Keep movin’ onWe ran into St. Andrew Who had St. Francis as his guideSo with my friends I say to you You are always welcome-Inside-

NEW WHITE RIVER DOCK PLANNED The Army Corps of Engineers will be installing a new boat carry in launch at Friedman Park (south of Holliday Park near Riverview Drive and Kessler) as part of the Levee Project. They will also be renovating the existing carry in launch near the Indianapolis Art Center. The projects were part of a deal struck with the Friends of the White River in order to improve access to the White River according to Kevin Hardie, Executive Director of the Friends of the White River. Both projects will be completed by mid-summer. Also, the Friends have started a new partnership with the Indianapolis Art Center (IAC) to teach teens how to appreciate the White River. Finally, the group is planning a celebratory event at the end of the summer. Hardie said they want more eyes and ears focused on the White River. He noted that the group was as surprised as were many supporters of the Levee Project at the The current boat launch by the IAC. number of old growth

Sycamore trees cut down as part of the levee project. No one really knew or foresaw that amount of cutting of the trees which was done quickly to avoid environmental rules regarding the protected Indiana bat which kicked in April 1. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 3 in the center section of the middle row which contains 1-2-4-6-8-9. The 3 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 6-2. The 3 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 4-1. The only place left is between the 8-9. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter I Spy I spy little glass feeders with red and yellow flowers hanging from eaves and poles around Broad Ripple. I must say probably twenty years ago I would see few of these contraptions. Now many residents have found that feeding hummingbirds is a pleasing summer pastime. The hummers are amazing birds that command our respect. These teeny birds, often mistaken for insects, are amazing. Only the ruby-throated hummingbird will visit feeders and gardens in our area. You may see many more varieties west of the Mississippi River, but not here. You may also notice that there are more hummingbirds around lakes and rivers and in the countryside. But, don’t let that stop you from putting out a hummingbird feeder. They are here in Broad Ripple. Some fun facts that might inspire you to attract hummingbirds to your yard: • Ruby throated hummingbirds winter in Central America and migrate from 525-1000 miles across the Gulf of Mexico taking up to 20 hours. You can follow their migrations online at www.hummingbirdcentral.com/ hummingbird-migration, or www.learner.org. People just like you post their sighting beginning in March. The males arrive early (the scouts), and the females follow about three weeks later. The early birds will find the best nest locations; however, they also are at risk for bad weather and poor food sources. • In our area, hummers usually return the first of May and leave in September and even as late as October. Feeders should be put out the first of May and stored about the second week of October. • Although most die within the first year, their life span can range from 3-5 years with the oldest recorded being 9 years. • They are only 3-4 inches long, and the female is 15-20% larger than the male. • The male is the one with a ruby throat; the female will be a greenishbrown color. • They only weigh .07 to .21 oz. and may nearly double their mass prior to migration. A hummer will feed 5-10 times per hour for 30-60 seconds each time and eat its weight in nectar or sugar water each day. It may also feed on small insects; they are considered omnivores. • Make your own hummingbird food: 4 parts water to 1 part white table sugar. Heat the sugar water so it dissolves. It can be stored in the refrigerator so it won’t ferment. Keep the feeder clean and refill it every couple days in the heat of the summer. • There are practical feeders and decorative feeders. You will notice most have a reservoir for sugar. Check that the mixture can’t drip. The bird has a very long tongue (proboscis) that they use to dip into the hole and sip nectar or sugar water. • The hum of a hummingbird is made by the bird’s rapid wing beats, up to 6080 beats per second. Their courtship dives increase their wing beats up to 200 times per second. They can dive-fly up to 40 mph, but their normal flight is 25 mph. They can fly upside down and backwards; thus, their aerobatics can mistake them for a Clearwing Moth. • Their heartbeat is 250 times per minute while at rest, about 1,220 per minute while flying. This is a great trivia answer! The ruby throated hummingbird is amazing! Not only are hummingbirds here for our enjoyment and wonder, but they are important pollinators. You will see them in gardens that have an abundance of red flowers. They also will be attracted to blue flowers. If you decided to feed hummingbirds, get a good feeder, make your own sugar water (nectar), and plant some red flowers. I guarantee that this summer project will give you many hours of enjoyment. One note: you may see a bully boy hummer monopolizing the feeder. This is not unusual. My advice is to add another feeder and share the bounty. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com. Email your bird questions to Brandt@BroadRippleGazette.com

Random Ripplings Broad Ripple Haverford Little League hosted the annual Jack Klein Day with a “Shave or Braid” event on June 3rd. The event raises money for St. Baldrick’s Foundation to fight childhood cancer. Above: Mayor Joe Hogsett was there to perform the knighting ceremony. He announced that if $100,000 is raised next year, he will shave his head. By 2pm at this year’s event, over $75,000 had been raised.
