2017 BRVA DUCK RACE

Participants of the 2017 duck race bought all available ducks (2,000) a couple of hours before the race began. At 4pm the ducks were poured into the canal from the red Monon Trail bridge. The rubber ducks headed down the canal and passed under Rainbow Bridge (at Guilford Avenue) and on to the finish line. Mayor Hogsett attended the event and also cut the ribbon (see photo below) to officially open the new esplanade that runs from College to Guilford on the north side of the canal. Helping the Mayor in the photo are City-County Councillor Colleen Fanning, BRVA President Mark Wolf, and Tom Healy of the Envision Broad Ripple Plan and Apple Press. photo by Vanessa Cleary

INDEX

Approximately 10 were in attendance at the June 27th public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee that was held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. There was one item on the agenda (in bold below) followed by two votes for items from previous meetings. A. 930 Broad Ripple Avenue, Erbert & Gerbert’s Soup & Sandwich Shop owner Keith Keokuk and Joshua Savage with Wooden McLaughlin regarding outdoor seating between the trees on Winthrop Avenue. This item was for information only. The petitioners were open to suggestions from the committee for a plan to add outdoor seating between the Erbert and Gerbert’s and Winthrop Avenue (see photo above). The committee asked for the proposed tables to be made smaller and for fewer of them as this is a very busy street-side area. The committee asked for no store signage to be added to this area. Perhaps some

art could be incorporated in the design. There was discussion of patron safety while eating in this area and of snow removal and city ordinances relating to bollards placed for safety. The petitioners stated that a side door would be added to the building if the outdoor dining feature is approved. Post-meeting item 1) There was a request from the petitioner at 838 E. 65th Street for a sign variance on Ferguson Street. The committee decided to suggest that the petitioner instead keep the existing sign on 65th Street. Post-meeting item 2) There was a request from the petitioner for the project at 6357 & 6371 Guilford Avenue for the committee to re-vote. Previously the committee voted not to support this petition. The committee decided that no votes have changed since the last vote and another would not be taken. The next public meeting of the BRVA Land Use and Development committee is scheduled for Tuesday, July 25, at 6pm at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map].

KIB Kicks Off Second Annual Pollinator Count

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful Kicks Off Second Annual Pollinator Count for the #KIBees Through week-long events residents across the city asked to become citizen scientists for a week Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) is calling on all Indianapolis residents to become citizen scientists and partake in KIB’s Wild Pollinator Count Week on July 17 – 23. This week-long event will engage Indianapolis in the important work of not only counting pollinators but educating Hoosiers on the need to plant native to help people and nature thrive. “Pollinators” can be birds, bees, butterflies, beetles, or any living things that transfers pollen. Why count pollinators? One in every three bites of food we eat are impacted by bees and other pollinators. This citizen scientist initiative is important because the data gathered will help guide conservation and restoration efforts, tree and other native plantings, as well as raise awareness of how vital pollinators are to the Indianapolis urban ecosystem. New this year, Indianapolis residents will use the iNaturalist mobile app to log pollinator counts. Using iNaturalist is simple and will include Indy’s pollinator counts in a world-wide citizen scientist effort to understand the living things in our environment. Directions on how to use iNaturalist can be found at www.kibi.org/kibees, where counts can also be uploaded through KIB’s website. During Pollinator Count Week, KIB staff and volunteers will host pop-up pollinator counts throughout the city. Pollinator Count Kits will also be available for download and available at all Indianapolis Public Library branches and YMCA locations. Kits include a Pollinator Data Sheet, a “Buzz Off! I’m Counting” yard sign/ruler, and a guide to common Indiana pollinators. Data can be uploaded on the KIB website, iNaturalist app, or delivered to KIB’s offices (1029 Fletcher Ave.).

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Happy July, fireflies! I’ve been enjoying standing in the middle of my yard at night watching the lightening bug concert - at least until the mosquitos steal the show.

Corey Feldman Angelic 2 Tour Saturday, July 8 The Vogue Theater - 6259 N. College Avenue 21+, $20, 75 VIP Meet/Greet, doors 9 pm, show 10 pm

Corey Feldman was the literally the poster boy of a whole generation. He starred in seemingly all of the 1980s teen and coming-of-age films. He’s on tour with his all-women band, The Angels. Much as been written about Corey’s shows - folks apparently love to bash on former teen-stars - all seem to agree that his performances are heartfelt and enthusiastic. Indianapolis native, Andy D, will open the show. Andy D’s performances are always a blast and his throw-back to 1980s vibe make him the perfect match for Corey Feldman.

The thing I like most about Broad Ripple is the children of God who live there. I see them playing with their dogs in the park. I walk into their shops and find them glistening with Love. (Many business owners attended Broad Ripple High School. And this, my friends, is the very essence of the greatness of this neighborhood!) SAVE OUR SCHOOL C.W. Pruitt June 2, 2017

Letters to the Editor Note to our readers: Letters to the Editor are the opinions of our readers and not necessarily those of this paper. I’m still enjoying your excellent newspaper and the good coverage you provide for what’s happening in the BR community. I heard recently about the planned closure of Broad Ripple High School and wanted to share a few thoughts. With the growth of the area and current efforts to attract more residents, particularly families, why not re-establish a community or local high school at BR? School 84 has been so successful that they converted School 70 to the same Center for Inquiry concept. Perhaps BR High School could be rebooted as a feeder school to appeal to the students/families graduating from CFI. Broad Ripple High School is one of the keys that could help IPS turn around the negative perception among many that it is a “failing school system.” Why not capitalize on the momentum and growth in the area, instead of turning our backs on it for a one-time budget fix? If IPS is unable or unwilling to operate BR High School, perhaps it could become a public charter school, similar to Herron High School, or even a K-12 school. Broad Ripple and Meridian Kessler have a wealth of private school options, but very few public options. The location and facilities at BRHS could be utilized to help alleviate that and support the effort to attract (and retain) families to the area. In my opinion, it is truly shortsighted to close the school and convert the property to apartments or some other use. Given the current density of Broad Ripple, it would be very difficult to acquire similar land and facilities in the future to start a new school. It seems to me that in the long run, consolidating and centralizing IPS schools will only exacerbate their problems and the perception that there are no good public schools in our area. For the sake of Broad Ripple’s viability as an attractive place to live, whatever happens, I think it is important that the community demand that the facility be preserved as an irreplaceable asset for educational purposes for now and our future. I believe the decades long trend of singles and young couples moving to BR, starting a family, and moving away as soon as their children reach school age is beginning to reverse, but more emphasis on providing resources for families (including school options) needs to be part of a sustainable plan for Broad Ripple and the surrounding neighborhoods. With such an active BRHS alumni and growing number of families with young children, there is a real opportunity to expand the public schools in Broad Ripple to serve the entire community. - Chad Slider

Message from Broad Ripple Park As of press time, the Broad Ripple Park Pool is closed for repairs to our circulation pump. The circulation pump is the main pump for the pool and circulates fresh water and chemicals into the pool. If we can’t do that then per Board of Health regulations we cannot be open to the public. The pump is out with a contracted repair company and a replacement part is on the way. Once they have the part then they can make repairs to the pump, reinstall the pump, and then we’ll have to circulate chemicals for at least 24 hours before we reopen. On July 4th and Pack the Parks day on July 8th the pool will not be open. We hope to reopen the following week, but keep in mind we will still be closed on Mondays. There are a few alternatives for people to go to while we’re closed. Sahm Aquatics Center in Castleton is the closest Indy Parks Pool to us. They will have free admission to the pool on July 8th for Pack the Parks. And then there are a couple of spray grounds close to us at Riverwood Park and Dan Wakefield Park.

STREET IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY As you may have noticed, 65th Street between College and Westfield and many others are getting street improvements thanks to urging from the BRVA. Kent Springer of BRVA reports his group was successful in getting the City to do the enhancements this year – earlier than scheduled. We need better streets and gutters that work given all the new development. Thanks to DPW and BRVA (and our utilities) for their great work on our beleaguered streets. The pothole/crater at 64th/College is finally gone.

AVOID DOWNTOWN JULY 8 Like biking at night? The CIBA Nite Ride will be July 8 with a ride from downtown then through the Crown Hill Cemetery. It usually kicks off around 11 p.m. Register at niteride.org. If you are not doing the ride, avoid the area which includes downtown and the near northside. POOL CLOSES AUGUST 6 Summer ends early at the Broad Ripple Pool. I stopped by on June 22 for a noon swim only to find they were closed for maintenance reasons. Coupled with weather closures and they are also closed on Mondays, it’s a short season for a great pool. (see p. 9) JET SKIING ON THE WHITE RIVER On June 21 I spotted someone jet skiing on the White River along the Art Center. It’s usually too shallow. INDYGO NOW TELLS YOU WHERE YOUR BUS IS In addition to the great new Transit Center, IndyGo now allows you to find out where your bus is. Just call them and enter your stop number. I have used it several times and it removes an anxiety of bus riding—namely, wondering when your bus will arrive. The #17 times shown are from Broad Ripple Avenue/Compton. The #18 times show are from College/63rd. Arrive 5 minutes early to ensure you don’t miss your bus. In short, there is no need to wait for the Red Line bus rapid transit to get to work downtown. We have great service now. For more information, call Indy Go at 317/6353344 or visit them at www.IndyGo.net NO STATE FAIR TRAIN AGAIN THIS YEAR No State Fair train again this year as the operators (Indiana Transportation Museum of Noblesville) continue to battle with Noblesville and Fishers which want to abandon the tracks for a bike rail trail. It’s a shame. The tracks run all the way to 10th Street and could be a future commuter rail line. Indeed, the Indiana Transportation Museum is vying to run the train down for Colts Games in a bid to keep the service. Several years ago the train had a stop at 71st Street on its way to the Fair. While bus rapid transit is nice, you could argue the rail line from Noblesville to Downtown would be one way to relieve I-69 congestion. (It’s amazing the Monon Rail line wasn’t turned into a commuter rail line to Carmel.) In other Fair news, the Fair runs from August 4-20, and each night of the fair features a concert that is free. The 2017 Indiana State Fair Free Shows include: • George Thorogood and the Destroyers - Fri, Aug 4 • Hotel California “A Salute to The Eagles” with Gordon Bonham Blues Band, and Terry Lee & The Rockaboogie Band - Sat, Aug 5 • Hispanic Music Festival headlined by Chicas Roland and Carmen Jara - Sun, Aug 6 • Bret Michaels: The Party Starts Now Tour - Mon, Aug 7 • Happy Together Tour - Monday, Aug 14 - Starring: The Turtles featuring Flo & Eddie, The Association, Chuck Negron formerly of Three Dog Night, The Box Tops, The Cowsills and The Archies Ron Dante • Patti LaBelle - Thursday, August 17

Other upcoming events

• Pack the Parks is Sat., July 8th. (Note: BR Pool is not expected to reopen by then) • July 18th is Wizard Expo at Broad Ripple Park, a Harry Potter special event for ages 6 to 13 from 10:00am-11:30am at the Family Center. • Wednesday evenings – BR Farmers Market @ Bent Rail Brewery along the Monon Trail, SoBro - 53rd and Winthrop Avenue. • Thursday evenings – Outdoor movies at Hotel Broad Ripple • July 7 Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Summer Night Movie at IMA • July 28 - The Movie “Friday” at the IMA Doors open at 7 p.m., films begin at dusk

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 8 in the left section of the center row that contains 1-2-4-5-6-7. The 8 in the middle section eliminates the space between the 4-6. The 8 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 5-2. The only place left is to the left of the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

If you’re already finding yourself in the ABC Wine Club this summer (Anything But Chardonnay) how about giving some other off beat whites a try? Picpoul is found in the Rhone and Languedoc regions of France and creates a steely, dry, white wine that is perfect with seafood. Look for the slender green bottle with Picpoul de Pinet on the label. Torrontes from Argentina has an inviting floral, herbal nose and usually offers up smooth rich flavors of stone fruit. Santa Julia, Catena Alamos, and Zuccardi are all affordable and widely available labels to look for. Or how about an Italian vermentino? The bottle I recently sampled is actually a Cal-Ital, from Bella Grace Vineyards in Amador County, California, an area near the Sierra Foothills. This vermentino shows distinct aromas and flavors of candied lemon with a round clean finish. Chill it and swill it! Jill A. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Color Me Red, White, and Blue

Random Ripplings

Sometimes we need to go back for a refresher to understand where we have come from. In my days, the United States Flag was respected and cherished. We learned the meaning of our flag and how to display, acknowledge it, and care for it. So let’s review the pointers found on usflag.org: • The flag should never be dipped to any person or thing. It is flown upside down only as a distress signal. • The flag should not be used as a drapery, or for covering a podium or platform or for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top. • The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose. • The flag should not be used as part of a costume or athletic uniform, except that a flag patch may be used on the uniform of military personnel, fireman, policeman and members of patriotic organizations. • The flag should never be used as a receptacle for carrying or delivering anything. • When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground. • To store the flag, it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously. • The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary. • When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner. American Legion Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony. • No other flag ever should be placed above the Stars and Stripes. • The flag is to be flown at half-staff in mourning for designated, principal government leaders and upon presidential or gubernatorial order. • To salute the flag and show respect, all persons come to attention. Those in uniform give the appropriate formal salute. Citizens not in uniform salute by placing their right hand over the heart and men with head cover should remove it and hold it to left shoulder, hand over the heart. This Fourth of July, put out a flag and display it proudly. It is one of the few symbols we can rally around.
