Auto mechanic and entrepreneur Steve Anderson described the driving force behind A OK Car Care, located at 5581 N. Keystone Avenue. “I actually started working on cars when I was eight years old with my dad. He was a carpenter, but he worked on his car to save money. It was kind of a hobby, but then I moved into karate and then into the military. When I got out of the military, I opened A OK Car Care in 2002. This gives me something to do and somewhere to go. I tell my customers, ‘It’s not just about building and repairing cars, but building relationships with my customers too.’ Working on cars has always been a hobby and a love of mine which grew into also creating and building street-legal vehicles like the flying saucer which I drove in the 500 Parade last year and the Frankenstein I co-designed and built this year with a customer who is a Herron Art professor. One of his students welded Frankenstein’s framework and two of my body shop colleagues showed the team how to ‘make’ his body and A OK mechanic Walt wired Frankenstein so he had blue eyes, head and side lights and the red backlighting the driver,” Anderson explained. “We also have fun vehicles like the Munstermobile with the entire Munster family as passengers, as well as five Batmobiles and for a short time, the smiling Little Oil Drop (See Where in the Village? Volume 14 Number 9). Other ‘road legal’ vehicles include a stage coach, covered wagon and a casket (‘just add dirt’). The ’66 Batmobile, like the one featured in the 1960s TV series, is signed by Adam West and Burt Ward. We rent the Batmobile and other cars to the public,” he said. Anderson explains, “We work on all cars at reasonable prices for our customers. Our diagnostic fee is free when we work on a customer’s vehicle. As an independent shop, we do the same quality of work for less money than dealerships and chain repair services. At A OK, we do everything - from engines, tune-ups, transmissions to suspensions, alignments, brakes and bodywork. There’s really nothing that we don’t do,” he mentioned. (Well, they don’t do tires.) When you invest your money getting your car repaired, you want to know what you’re spending it for,” he advised. “We work on any kind of vehicle: imports and domestic cars; hot rods & vintage; cars built before and after 1996. For 90 minutes on July 18, many voices were heard by the IPS board and Dr. Lewis D. Ferebee, Superintendent. There were pleas to keep BRHS open because it is such an important part of the community and of their children’s lives. Story after story of what the family at BRHS and the community meant to them growing up in the school. Many asked, if schools must be closed, close the smaller ones and bring those students to BRHS, a larger and better equipped facility. Many of the speakers told of how the strong arts programs at BRHS shaped their lives for the better and should be allowed to continue and grow. In 2002, one of my tenants was working at this location and told me his boss decided to retire, so I talked to the owner about locating here. The retired folks moved out on Friday. I remodeled it on a Saturday and Sunday and opened A OK Car Care that Monday, so this location being an auto repair shop never skipped a beat. Anderson provides fleet service for multi-vehicle businesses and also gives discounts for military, seniors, law enforcement, fire fighters & students. Answering the call to serve his country, Steve joined the Army when he was 17. “I served during the Vietnam era in the 1970s and retired as staff sergeant after 24 years in the military. After I got out of the service, I returned to my passion of working on vehicles. It was always a hobby of mine along with martial arts.” (Many of his customers were also his students at or neighbors of A OK Karate.) Anderson noted, “I tell my students that it is not to be used for violence, but to prepare mind, body and spirit to work as one. Mutual Respect between Teacher and Student provides for each to learn from the other. You always want to defuse a potential confrontation through verbal engagement, using the martial arts only to defend your own life, family and country.” Originally from Indianapolis, Steve attended Manual High School, later earning both a bachelors in human resource management and an MBA from Oakland City University, a Christian school located in northern Indiana. Customer and friend Margaret Gross said, “I quickly came to recognize that many mechanics are also artists! My first realization was when Walt, who works with Steve and who has been working on cars since he was 16, re-constructed the heat shield located between the radiator and the engine on my ‘97 Subaru, because the cost of a new one was several hundred dollars. The webbing was, in fact, a piece of art worthy of hanging in an art gallery! A more recent realization was witnessing Steve and fellow customer Lowell Isaac, a professor at Herron School of Art, discover their shared enthusiasm for Frankenstein. By the time Lowell’s car was done, he and Steve sketched a Frankenstein car, Lowell went back to his studio, returning with a clay prototype he’d sculpted and painted.” Anderson described the customized model. “We built the Frankenstein car in six weeks. When we got it running, the first thing I said, was ‘it’s alive!’ I grew up with the comic book characters Superman, Batman and Cosmos. I surround myself here in our shop with items from my childhood. People are always welcome to see our ‘museum’ as well as recent acquisitions. Margaret and I like to think that when you have fun in your work, you never work a day in your life. You make it fun for the other people. When I drive these cars around town, I get miles of smiles.” To steer potential automotive buyers in the right direction, Anderson advises, “The best thing to do when purchasing a car is to take it to a shop and let them look at it before you spend a dollar. Check the oil, transmission fluid, headlights and taillights. We’ll put it up on a lift to see if the front end is tight, if the service on the timing belt has been changed every 75,000 miles. Domestic vehicles have a timing chain that can be replaced. Check for a mechanic’s lien. The key to minimizing costly repairs and prolong the life of your vehicle is staying current with its maintenance. At least change the oil – the life blood of your car every 3 months, no matter how few miles you’ve driven, because oil, the life blood of your car, has a ‘shelf life’ of only about 90 days. Annually, check the fuel injection and change the other fluids (transmission, brake, coolant). Just read the manual, follow the scheduled maintenance standards and you can keep a car around for decades.” Finally, Steve wants you to know that when you come in on Monday, Wednesday or Friday, you may find him “channeling” Superman; Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, he’s Batman!

Seu Jorge, one of Brazil’s most talented contemporary singers, rose to international fame in the Wes Anderson film A Life Aquatic. In his acclaimed role as Pelé dos Santos, a singing sailor, Seu Jorge performed several of David Bowie’s songs in the film. But in a twist, he did it in Portuguese, accompanying himself simply on acoustic guitar. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Three reasons why Broad Ripple High School should remain an education-based facility. On June 28, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) announced its plans to close three local high schools, including Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities. While the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) understands the IPS recommendation to close BRHS, we believe that as the district and its board evaluates options for future use of the school property, it is essential that the facility continues to be used for public education purposes. Here are three reasons to keep in mind as this process moves forward. 1. Broad Ripple possesses a long-standing tradition of neighborhood schools, and it is imperative for area residents to have public school options for their children. Broad Ripple High School was first established in 1886 and became IPS’ fourth high school in 1923. It has provided a sense of identity and community for more than 130 years. A number of Broad Ripple High School alumni have stayed in or returned to the village to shape the community and grow its businesses. 2. Maintaining a high school within village boundaries will increase resident retention and raise the profile of Broad Ripple among potential new residents moving to the Indianapolis area. Schools are often the primary decision factor for families choosing a home or neighborhood. Without a viable, neighborhood-based high school, Broad Ripple’s long-lasting community development and sustainability are unachievable. 3. The school building is an essential part of Broad Ripple’s infrastructure and must serve as a hub for learning and community growth. Throughout its 130-year existence, the high school has opened its doors to the community and invited it in for special events, performances, sporting events and community gathering. It is particularly important to preserve the facility as a hub for education, art and community. Such uses are not profit-bearing ventures. If the building is sold, no such facility will be built in its place to ensure these important community activities have a continued home. Maintaining a high school in Broad Ripple creates a diverse mix of educational, business and entertainment offerings throughout the village. Finally, the BRVA believes strongly in community input and involvement throughout this process. It is imperative that community members have an opportunity to weigh in and help shape the facility’s future, which we strongly believe should remain scholastic and rooted in community service. - Broad Ripple Village Association

Rapid bus line moves forward

The Red Line rapid transit project which will run from the University of Indianapolis to downtown and up College Avenue to Broad Ripple continues with construction packages being put out to bid in August. There will be two packages: one for civil work and the other for station work. Vendors are invited to bid on one or both. The IndyGo Board of Directors anticipates approving the final bid(s) in October with a groundbreaking before end of year, and service open in 2019. IndyGo is committed to mitigating impacts to pedestrians, bicyclists, traffic and parking. As such, some restrictions and timing requirements will be included in the bid documents including but not limited to work restrictions for special events, a limit on consecutive intersections impacted at one time, and signage to redirect traffic to support business access. Coming this summer and through groundbreaking, IndyGo will be connecting with corridor business owners and residents about the anticipated schedule and resources available during construction. In addition, a dedicated construction hotline will open at the end of the year, the three corridor liaisons will continue outreach and serve as direct interface between work crews and the public. Later this month, a new Red Line website will launch with additional resources including a 3-week look-ahead construction schedule. The Red Line is an element of the Marion County Transit Plan that will see a total 70% increase in public transit service by 2021 according to IndyGo. Stretching 13 miles from Broad Ripple to the University of Indianapolis, the Red Line will serve as the frequent spine of the improved efficient grid network. Carnival returning to the Ripple

Back this year by popular demand, the BRVA presents the Broad Ripple Carnival in Broad Ripple Park on August 11-13. The free four-day festival will celebrate the history of the area featuring carnival rides and games, food and drink, a craft beer garden, live entertainment and community booths. A history exhibit provided by Broad Ripple Gazette will be on display and Saturday will feature an artisan and vintage market provided by Indy Urban Flea. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Short Sips I poured the Art of Wine event in Carmel last weekend. Gorgeous weather, big thirsty crowd that delighted in the six wines being sampled from the Crush & Brew table. Three white, three red, all available at local retailers. Fan favorites included the Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc–a zippy tangy New Zealand white wine with notes of white grapefruit, lemongrass and honeydew melon; Villa Pozzi Moscato–an off dry white from Italy with a fresh white grape flavor, and a softly sweet finish; Septima Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina–lush, bold dry red with aromas and flavors of mulberry, blackberry and a hint of sage; and the 2013 Darcie Kent Vineyards “Madden Cab”, mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with a bit of Petite Syrah that offers up an easy drinker medium bodied dry red with notes of black cherry, eucalyptus and hint of spice. Another dry rose to find: V. Sattui Winery Rosato di Sangiovese. One of Napa’s oldest wineries and the first to offer outdoor picnic seating when wine tasting in Napa was limited to a handful of wineries and the experience was just that–tasting wine. My first visit was in 1996 and I’ve been in love with their old world style ever since. Their dry rose offers up aromas and flavors of black cherry and almond with a crisp yet full finish. Delicious!!

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Let Out Your Inner Child It’s fairy garden time. I will be planting and imagining what the fairies will desire in my yard this year. Do you know that fairies and elves can be bad and impish or fanciful and kind? That is why I offer an enticing garden for these unseen creatures. I want to have only the kind ones visit my yard on a dark, warm, starlit night. I am adding to my fairy garden this year. It is nestled under my big sugar maple so shade plants and moss are my only plantings. I do expand each year by adding more structures, lights, and festoons. My corner tree is perfect for all the children of the neighbor to visit the “big” fairy garden and climb the tree to see the garden from a different perspective. It is the highlight of summer walks whether during the day or late evening. The big maple tree has a wooden owl face affixed to the trunk so that the tree shares its wisdom while overlooking the fairy houses. This stern owl will hopefully remind visitors to treat the garden with respect. Mulch, moss, and stones line the area that is surrounded by an embellished white wire fence (fairy height of course). If you want to enter the garden, you have to be small enough to walk through the twig archway made from the fallen limbs found in the yard. There is another small twig structure with a thinking seat in it for six-year olds and younger to disappear into. Small garden lights start shining at dusk for the late night visitors. In the garden village you will see fairy-sized houses, businesses like fairy dust and fairy wing shops, a band shell, churches, and troll huts. There is a special welcome-fairy door that provides an opening in the tree so the fairies and elves can enter from the nether land. Hanging banners and suspended fairy dwelling are in overhead branches. One little cabin has a place for pieces of paper so a visitor can write a note and wait for a fairy to answer. On magical nights, fairies visit and sometime leave trinkets in the box for curious children. I have been making fairy gardens for the past decade. I encourage you to try adding one to your yard. Once you have made a fairy garden, it is difficult to stop with just one. My yard has at least six ranging from the under tree garden to one made in a small pot. Smaller gardens can be assembled in any kind of a container, small or large: leaky birdbath tops, Weber grill lids, an old wheelbarrow, a large pot, or even wheel hubs. The container is secondary to what you put in it. From homemade or collected objects to store bought, and/ or elegant fairy paraphernalia, anything goes in this kind of garden. Begin with a base of sand, rocks, or plastic packing Front: Fairy house made from a shoe with a black board roof. Back: Stone covering a peanuts for drainage. Add good potting soil. You can either landscape the area plastic bottle and decorated with moss. first or put in your houses, birdbaths, rocks, tables/chairs, figurines, and then finally add miniature plants. The fairy landscape doesn’t require many plants. I use some from my yard like miniature hostas, mosses, violets, and ground cover. A small rosemary plant makes a perfect scale tree, and different thymes are just the right touch. Local nurseries usually have wonderful selections of small flowers to add delight. Watering and pruning is required for the maintenance of your garden, and it can be done in a matter of minutes! Be sure to provide some shade so that the plants will not perish in the hot sun. My gardens are in fairly heavy shade. What’s also fun as a fairy garden landlord is collecting items for the garden all summer long. Encourage your visitors to donate special items. You will be amazed at how jammed it can get! The garden can continue to change for the seasons. Add paths of stone or gems, a flag, a pond, a pumpkin, or a scarecrow. Summer is the high season for fairies. Your garden will work like a charm as a conversation starter for visitors, and you will want to invite passersby to stop and admire your handiwork. And the best part about a fairy garden is that sometimes, if you are lucky, you just might catch a glimpse of a fairy visiting.
