INDEX
Tanorria Askew and Christina Huffines are couponing for a cause. “I am the vice president of the Board of Directors for Dotted Line Divas, which is a faith-based, 501(c)(3) nonprofit extreme couponing organization where items are purchased at a significant discount and then given to families in need,” Ms. Askew explained. “Christina and I are friends. We go to the same church in Carmel, which is kind of what fostered and incubated this whole concept. Christina is a single mom who was struggling and taking care of her two kids and using coupons to obtain items from food pantries, but she couldn’t get personal care items from there. She started to buy items in bulk to get discounts and began doing this for families in need and started it at Mercy Road Church. She was helping families in need for three years. Two years ago, we got a 501 (c) (3) designation which was initially kind of three- to five-year goal for us, but it grew quickly to where we achieved it in a year and a half,” she noted. Ms. Askew is also a culinary connoisseur. “I actually own my personal chef business, Tanorria’s Table. I have an entrepreneurial background. I’ve been a personal chef for four years and competed on MasterChef (seventh season) with
Gordon Ramsey. I left my job in corporate America after 15 years to pursue my business full-time. Every meal I create is customized. My clients are in central Indiana and surrounding countries.” Ms. Askew and Ms. Huffines saw the need to move their non-profit pantry space to a nearby area. “We were in the Home Place area for one year, which is on the cusp of Nora and Carmel. We moved the personal care pantry temporarily into Mercy Road Church (mercyroad.cc) which allowed us to use the place. We wanted [the permanent pantry] to be the in same area, but be more accessible off I-465 for families who travel from Anderson and Brownsburg. [Union Chapel United Methodist Church] is just ideal.” She described the eligibility requirements for the personal care pantry. “People just have to come with a photo ID and proof of address. We want to get to know them and their families. We consider ourselves to be a choice pantry where people can select what they need. It’s a better experience for them. They can choose things to meet their family’s needs. We will be open on the third Saturday of every month. Our first pantry day will be Saturday, August 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Union Chapel United Methodist Church, located at 2720 E. 86th Street, off Keystone Avenue and I-465. People can visit our web site (www.dottedlinedivas. com) and learn more about how to volunteer, donate and get involved.” Dotted Line Divas Founder Christina Huffines said, “I just started out by couponing on my own. People at Mercy Road Church discovered what I was doing and encouraged me. They suggested that I start a non-profit. A friend suggested calling it Dotted Line Divas since coupons have lines around them.” She emphasized, “We’re not a food pantry. We are a personal care pantry that provides a lot of the things that food pantries don’t provide and that food stamps don’t purchase.” Ms. Askew added, “Another unique component is that we have people that are shoppers who purchase items at a significant discount at stores and make a suggested donation to the pantry. We take that donation they give us and purchase more items for anybody in need. The most rewarding thing for me is coming out of corporate America and using those skill sets in being able to serve the community.” Inquiries can be answered at: info@dottedlinedivas.com By reaching out to the local community through their personal care pantry at Union Chapel Union Methodist Church, Dotted Line Divas Tanorria Askew and Christina Huffines are making a difference in the lives of Central Indiana families.

The old Glendale penguins, Wynkin, Blynkin and Nod, are currently greeting visitors at the entrance of the Oceans building at the Indianapolis Zoo. The Kite family has loaned them to the Zoo for a 10year period. The Arthur Kraft sculptures were originally installed in the new Glendale open-air shopping mall at 62nd and Keystone in 1960 (as a child, your editor played on them many times). In the 1970s Glendale was enclosed. In 2007 the enclosed mall was razed. The penguins were relocated to the ground floor of the old Block’s department store which became Staples and the library.

BRVA to host community input session on future of BRHS
The Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) will host a community input open house for residents in their service area – which includes residences within Meridian St on the west, Evanston St on the east, Kessler Blvd on the south, and 67th St/White River on the north - to gather community input on potential reuse of Broad Ripple High School. All other interested parties will be invited to participate in an online survey that can be found at www.brva.org/brhsadvocacy and will be made available Aug. 29 through Sept. 12. The public input open house for Broad Ripple residents will take place next Thurs., Aug. 24 from 6 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, in the Parish Hall Basement (North Building) located at 6050 N Meridian St. Attendees should RSVP at www.BRHSopenhouse.eventbrite.com. In June, Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) announced its recommendation to close various area high schools, including Broad Ripple Magnet High School for the Arts and Humanities. The IPS board will hold a final vote on Sept. 18. BRVA Board Member and Past President Kent Springer says the input session is part of the organization’s mission to advance the Village community through engagement and advocacy. “It is imperative that the community be able to shape the facility’s reuse,” said Springer. “And while the BRVA strongly believes BRHS should remain scholastic and community-service-minded, we want to make sure all voices in the community are heard.” Springer says the input received during the meeting will be relayed directly to IPS, which indicated its desire for the BRVA and others to participate in reuse discussions should the board vote to close BRHS.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. It is my great pleasure to re-introduce Broad Ripple Gazette readers to the poetry of Kyle Andrews. Two takes on every story, flip sides of the same coin... Figureheads in all their glory, for what it is that they purloin... Thieves in the temple, thriving with so few of us surviving, on the trickle down scrapple crap that they are feeding us daily... Clue: B equals Z Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 7 in the left section of the top row that contains 3-5-6-9. The 7 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The 7 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to both sides of the 3. The only place left is to the left of the 5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Historic Ad This ad for the Tin Star Jail, 1904 Broad Ripple Avenue [HH30 on map], appeared in the Broad Ripple High School Riparian yearbook in 1975. I picked this one because a reader wrote in asking for a picture of the old restaurant. The Tin Star specialized in roast beef sandwiches. In this ad, BRHS students Sally Freihofer and Carolyn Kreutzfeld are in one of the jail cells. This location has since been Pizza King, BBQ Heaven, Red Eye Cafe, and is now Boogie Burger.

Did you get to the Broad Ripple Carnival? And more importantly, did you visit the Broad Ripple History Exhibit curated by our very own BR History Guru Alan Hague? What a tremendous collection of the different “era’s” of the village showcased in photographs, posters, and past issues of BRG. Broad Ripple has always been a mecca for leisure of some sort. Maps and photos made it both easy and a bit shocking to see how green space for boating, swimming, and the short lived but much adored Amusement Park evolved into opportunities for independent owners of galleries, shops, restaurants and music venues to open their own businesses. The cycle continues as those places of the past become apartments and condos of the future. Lets hope our sense of community survives as Broad Ripple becomes more of an urban neighborhood than a village. Living in Broad Ripple also makes it a good hub from which to venture forth into other neighborhoods and experience their celebrations of the past, present and future. I explored a few this past weekend. The Circle City Industrial Complex in the Windsor Park neighborhood celebrated the life of a local artist whose pioneering spirit paved the way for that building to be what it is today, home to studios, businesses and even a craft brewery. The Near West Flow Fest showcased the River West neighborhood’s diverse cultures with music (including a rocking performance from long time Broad Ripple musician Tim Brickley and his band), art and a stunning Recycled Fashion show that was a lesson in history and the environment. The DiveDapper Poetry Carnival at the Efroymson Center for Creative Writing in the Butler-Tarkington neighborhood offered everything from poetry workshops to social insight from four of the country’s up and coming poets. The city of Carmel’s Second Saturday Gallery Walk on Main Street featured musicians on the sidewalks, and artists in their galleries including some Broad Ripple residents, all ready and willing to have a conversation with you. At the Indiana State Fair, I enjoyed the talents of local musicians, artists and scientists (shout out to Rocky Ripples Jim Poyser and the positive environmental difference his Earth Charter Indiana group is making in our city and state) in addition to the hard work of Indiana farmers. One of my favorite “timeless” bottles of wine is Dry Creek Vineyards Chenin Blanc. DCV was one of the first in California to successfully grow and bottle the French grape. The result is a lush, white wine with an exotic note of mandarin orange on the palate, and a clean crisp finish. Affordably priced and widely available it’s a wine that feels right at home whether its served on its own or with food.

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Let the Show Begin I rarely talk or write about the artist side of my persona. In my early years I was a working artist—painting in the winter and traveling the outdoor art fair circuit from the spring to the fall. I was in multiple galleries and even owned Market Gallery in the City Market. During my last season, I spent the entire August through October setting up in unbelievable weather, often battling rain and wind. After fifteen years I gave in to my education and got a “real” job. I put my ink, pens, silverpoints, and paints away, took my canvas to the basement, and closed that part of my life. I trained as an instructional designer and enjoyed the novelty of a nine-to-five day with a five-day work week. Working a normal day, I was able to start raising service dogs for Canine Companions for Independence…that was in 1989. Fifteen dogs later and still with passion for the program, I made time to paint again. Capturing our canine companions on canvas has been my present focus—putting my feelings on canvas through the dog expression I capture. This month I am having a gallery show at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church located at 86th and Meridian. I invite you to come to my exhibit “Dog is God Spelled Backwards.” The church is open during the week and I will be at the exhibit each Sunday morning in August. This exhibit has been so much fun to develop. The paintings are for sale with the proceeds all going to Canine Companions for Independence. I have painted a variety of pups, not all service dogs and in all sizes of canvases.

Keeping Cool, oil on canvas
When God had made the earth and sky, the flowers and trees, He then made all the animals and all the birds and bees. When his work was finished Not one was quite the same. He said, “I’ll walk this earth of mine and give each one a name.” And so he traveled land and sea and everywhere he went, a little creature followed him until it’s strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth and in the sky and sea, the little creature said, “Dear Lord, there’s not one left for me.” The father smiled and softly said, “I’ve left you to the end. I’ve turned my own name back to front and called you Dog, my friend.” -Author unknown
