Rocky Ripple Festival and a little history By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com The annual Rocky Ripple Festival will be September 23, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. This family-friendly event is free and a celebration of the arts for all ages. With over 80 artists, six bands and an eclectic and wide variety of hands-on creative activities, the Rocky Ripple Festival is a casual day of fun and entertainment in a 6-acre park. The location is Hohlt Park, 840 W. 53rd Street, near Butler University across the White River Canal. Free street parking and free safe/secure bicycle parking are available with Pedal & Park. In an interview with Festival coordinator Dhyana Raynor, she mentioned that her involvement with the festival began the year after moving to Rocky Ripple in 2001. “At the time it was a small event with about a dozen artists.” Raynor who has loved and supported art most of her life, was inspired to get involved. Rocky Ripple resident Steve Hurt, a musician and sound technician offered to find bands and provide music for the festival. “With each year, the festival has grown and expanded. A professional stage and tent replaces the original, ground level wooden platform. There is now a food, beer and wine court. The creative children’s activity area has become a destination spot for families. There is much more. You’ll just have to come to the festival and experience it yourself,” Ms. Raynor mentioned. “This year is especially significant,” she A yoga demonstration from a previous fest. said. “It marks the 90th year of Rocky Ripple as an incorporated town. To celebrate this historical year, each band will feature at least one Rocky Ripple musician.” Rocky Ripple resident and artist coordinator Megan Wright believes that her town is a unique community. “Per capita, it probably has more artists and musicians than most neighborhoods. The unique personality of the Rocky Ripple Festival grows out of the personality of the residents.” Raynor totally agrees. “It’s an eclectic community. It is time for the annual Broad Ripple Historic Home Tour. This year marks the thirteenth year for the tour. From 11 am to 5 pm on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24, ticket holders can visit seven stops along the way. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 day of event. As in years past, the Friday evening before the tour weekend is the Home Tour Kickoff Party. The party is free to attend with purchase of home tour ticket and will be held on Friday, September 22, from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm. The bands, in order of their performance are: Philadelphia Phil (unique blend of blues), Americana (western and swing), Silver Dollar Family Band (handcrafted Americana), Andra Faye and Scott Ballantine (blues and jazz), Sunny Meade, David Linder and friends (acoustic roots), Tim Brickley and the Bleeding Hearts (high energy rock) and 3:1 with John Byrne (diverse high energy festival party music). Food, beer and wine vendors include La Chinita Poblana, Punch Burger, Pita Pit, Wilson’s Sweet Corn, LICK Ice Cream and the Broad Ripple Brewpub. New festival events his year are a shaded ground stage for kid’s interests, visiting Nigerian dwarf goats, witches from the Children’s Museum Haunted House, and Trip (Butler’s bulldog). The popular bubble bonanza, art station, face painting, bean bag toss, hooping, and hair spray color are returning. The Rocky Ripple Festival continues to be a free event thanks to the generous sponsorship of local businesses and organizations. Key sponsors are Blue Herron Construction, Broad Ripple Brewpub, the Great Frame Up (612 N. Delaware and 62nd and Allisonville Road) and Good Earth. Additional support comes from the Meridian Hills Coop Nursery and Kindergarten School, the Riviera Club, the Children’s Museum Guild and Global Gifts. RCCA has been in existence since November 12, 1948 when the first organizational meeting was held in the home of Mrs. William Smith. It was voted on to call the group the Ladies Auxiliary of the Rocky Ripple Volunteer Fire Department. Their purpose was to assist the firemen and the volunteer fire department morally and financially. The first order of business was to raise money through a bake sale to buy a hose for the fire department. By July of 1950, a town hall had been built by local residents with money and support from the Ladies Auxiliary. Through the next four decades, the Ladies Auxiliary raised money to fund the volunteer fire department as well as provide social events for the residents of Rocky Ripple. By the end of 1989, and with the dissolution of the Volunteer Fire Department, the Ladies Auxiliary adopted new bylaws on February 6, 1990 and renamed the organization the Rocky Ripple Community Association. In March of 1998, the Community Association incorporated for the purpose of becoming a Not for Profit organization in order to apply for grants, increase revenues and thus be able to provide additional support to the Rocky Ripple community. As indicated by the mission statement, the Rocky Ripple Community Association’s mission is to provide social, cultural, recreational, and educational services to the Town of Rocky Ripple and its residents, and in so doing strengthen the bonds of civic unity and provide for the common welfare of all residents. The annual festival is hosted by the RRCA, a not-for-profit organization and produced entirely by volunteers. All proceeds support the parks in the town of Rocky Ripple, a “community within the city.”

60th Reunion of the BRHS Class of 1957 by Gail Moll Pebworth

Members of the Broad Ripple High School class of 1957 will celebrate their 60th Reunion with five events September 15-17. Opening gathering on the 15th will be a three and half hour boat trip up White River on the Broad Ripple Boat Company two deck covered paddle boat—Central Indiana’s only paddle wheel excursion boat. Delicious refreshments will enhance this great opportunity to talk and catch up with friends. Friday evening a number of ’57 Alums will then attend the final Broad Ripple High School Homecoming Football Game at 7 p.m. In their senior year, the BRHS Football team of 1956 won the Indianapolis High School City Championships defeating all six city foes and ending season with a convincing 41-0 victory over arch-rival Shortridge High School. Saturday the Class of ’57 will have a box lunch in the Broad Ripple High School cafeteria followed by a presentation of the history of BRHS and a tour of the current high school led by Lou DeBruicker, BRHS Events Coordinator. The Saturday evening banquet will be held at Woodstock Country Club with class displays, program and sing-a-long of memorable music composed by classmates at former reunions as well as the Ripple Fight Song and other songs from the 1950’s. The final Reunion Event will be breakfast at the Riviera Club where classmates had spent many hours in their youth. This will provide another opportunity to share happy memories, renewing friendships from the past. Twenty-four members of the 1957 class have been planning the 60th Reunion for the past several years. The committee includes: Judy Ahring, Alice Appel, Ann Bowman Strong, Kay Brock Beineke, Ann Conner Cox, Judy Cravens Reeder, Sandra Dahlstrand Shevers, Mike Elliott, Brenda Eyles Taylor, David Gillette, Judy Heim Ritter, Charles Kendall, Jim Lafollette, Doris Lambert King, David Lawson, Gail Moll Pebworth, Judy Oliver Naaman, Sharon Oliver, Kurt Peters, Marcia Rinne Foster, Judy Riley Etheridge, Jim Schroeder, Patricia Shute, and Anne Williams Meyer. Most of committee live close to Indianapolis or in other parts of Indiana,but some have assisted from as far as Arizona, California and Florida. The Reunion Committee can account for all but seven of the 322 BRHS graduates in 1957. While 82 classmates currently live in Indiana, 1957 Rockets now live in 30 different states as well as one classmate in Australia. Nearly 1/3 of the living alumni will participate in the reunion coming from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina. Texas, Washington, and Wisconsin as well as Indiana!

Celebrate 100 Years of Central Library!

The entire community is invited to commemorate the illustrious 100-year history of Central Library, the main hub of The Indianapolis Public Library, with special programs and activities continuing through mid-October. Situated on land donated by beloved Hoosier poet James Whitcomb Riley, the original limestone building at 40 E. St. Clair Street was designed by Paul Cret, who devised many of the Library’s plans while fighting in the trenches for his native France in World War I. Dedicated on October 7, 1917, Central Library arose from the need to expand beyond the crowded and inadequate conditions at a building occupied at Ohio and Meridian Streets since 1893. The Cret Building, whose architectural features are highlighted by its classic Greek Doric exterior and an interior ceiling mural painted in oil on small canvases, received acclaim from such national publications as Architectural Forum, which in 1918 proclaimed Central Library as “the most beautiful secular building in the United States, if not the most beautiful secular building produced in modern times.” Free architectural tours of Central Library will be offered on September 16 and 30 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Presentations on Central Library’s history and architecture will be held on September 17 and 24 at 2 p.m. Throughout September and October, children and families can roll their coins down the “donation maze” to support the refurbishing of the 100-year-old Penny Gates at the south entrance of the Cret Building that were established from the donation of pennies by children “in loving remembrance of their friend James Whitcomb Riley.” Other programs include a 1917 storytime and scavenger hunt for children, a presentation on Central Library’s urban legendary “hauntings,” and an exploration of the life of James Whitcomb Riley. The centennial celebration culminates with a commemorate program on October 7 during which a 100-year time capsule will be unveiled, along with performances by a quintet from the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis and Indianapolis Children’s Choir, a proclamation by the Mayor’s office, historic period characters, family programs, birthday cake and more. Free parking in Central Library’s garage will be available throughout the day. PATTERN Magazine’s Launch Party to Celebrate 6 Years

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

This is my 300th column - that’s 12 years of Buzzing Around Town! I still sort-of look like the caricature of me, although you need to draw on my glasses on your own. I’ve been reminiscing about the early crazy days of writing this column. And by “crazy” I mean pre-WiFi. My first computer was a retired desktop from Lilly that I installed my own modem in so I could send the column via dial-up. I soon graduated to a secondhand laptop that had to be connected to dial-up, so I still wasn’t very mobile. After a few years I was able to buy a brand-new Apple MacBook and I could transmit via WiFi…. except for the small detail that I didn’t have WiFi at home. I can’t tell you how many deadline nights I walked to the Indy Hostel, sat on their back porch, “borrowed” their signal and transmitted the column. Other times I’d press the MacBook up to the window of Northside News Café (where 20 Tap is today) to get a strong enough signal to send the column. I’m sure folks leaving Moe & Johnnies at last call wondered what in the heck I was doing with my laptop pressed against the window. I think I looked just crazy enough that no one ever stopped to ask. Times have changed - I now have WiFi at home. In spite of that, I’m still often submitting the column at the last possible second. I’ve loved having a reason to keep up on the Broad Ripple music scene and its changes. My all-time favorite music venue – The Patio – closed in 2005. Other venues have come and gone – I especially miss Locals Only and The Upper Room. Cheers to the music spaces that are going strong; The Vogue, The Jazz Kitchen, Birdy’s, The Monkey’s Tale, The Mousetrap, Flatwater, and the Melody Inn. Several other places tuck music into their businesses; Indy Hostel, Aristocrat, Brothers, Hotel Broad Ripple, Plump’s Last Shot and Upland Tasting Room. New ones are popping up – I’m looking forward to visiting Black Circle Brewing. We are also lucky to have two of the best record stores in the country in our midst. Cheers to Indy CD & Vinyl and to LUNA music. Not only do they both stock national artists, they carry plenty of music from local musicians. Watch their calendars for in-store performances of touring artists playing acoustic shows. Nothing better than standing in the stacks of records listening to live music (see page 7!). Writing for the Broad Ripple Gazette has allowed me to hone my style and find my voice, and has led to some pretty amazing things. I now freelance for NUVO newsweekly and write reviews and occasional features for the national print magazine Ghettoblaster. Most of all, the Broad Ripple Gazette has connected me to the community – and you dear readers. For that I’m eternally grateful. Thank you for taking a chance on me, Alan!

Invasive Plant Removal Events

Tom Hohman of INPAWS has organized several events to clear parks of invasive plants including removing bush honeysuckle at an Indy Parks property. It’s a new one that we haven’t worked at before, Juan Solomon Park. It’s located about a mile west of Holliday Park. They will be working there Wednesday, Oct. 4, 9:00-12:00. He is still working on a couple of additional events, including at least one at either Holliday Park or Marott Nature Preserve. Contact the native plant society to register.

INDY GO RAPID ROUTE WORK CONTINUES

IndyGo released the construction bid packages for the new Red Line Rapid Transit project. Two bid packages are included: one for civil work and the other for station work. Vendors are invited to bid on one or both. The IndyGo board of directors anticipates awarding the final bid(s) in December, with construction groundbreaking in January 2018. Bid packages from construction contractors will include detailed work schedules. The Red Line, is planned to open for service in spring 2019, is an element of the Marion County Transit Plan and will stretch 13 miles from Broad Ripple to the University of Indianapolis. This upgraded transit service will serve as the frequent spine of the improved efficient grid network. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can â&#x20AC;&#x201C; but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s learn another, more complex, two-step, way to solve. On the easy puzzle, we see that the 1 in the left section of the middle row would eliminate the space above the 2-5 in the left section of the top row. This means the 1 will eventually go in one of the three spaces to the left of the 2-5 in the left section of the top row. We can use this eventual 1 placement to eliminate the spaces below the 9 in the left section of the bottom row. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above and below the 3 in the left section of the bottom row. This only leaves the spaces above and below the 6 to put the one. We can eliminate the space below due to the 1 in the right section of the bottom row. This only leaves the space above the 6 for the 1! Disasters man made and natural have been on my mind a lot lately. The sixteenth anniversary of 9/11. Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. It seems trivial and a bit selfish to think about wine but when so many bad things are happening, the simple things can bring a much needed moment of pleasure. Even if it’s just a glass of wine. I read that billionaire businessman Sir Richard Branson hunkered down in the wine cellar of his private home on Necker Island while Hurricane Irma passed over. He, his staff and his bottles survived unscathed. What if you didn’t have to worry about broken bottles? Or having a corkscrew? Box wine of course. It’s functional, delicious and widely available. The standard “big box” of wine has a convenient tap which is connected to a polyethylene bag that keeps wine fresh up to 6 weeks after opening. Each box equals 4 bottles and even if the box gets soaked or damaged, the wine in the bag stays fresh. Tetra pack wines hold 3 glasses. The aseptic lined portable packages are like “adult juice” boxes. Light and air are the enemies of wine. Once a bottle is exposed to either, the wine begins to fade in flavor and structure. I look at the world around me and wonder how we got where we are. The country is more divided than I can remember. It seems as if change is happening so rapidly that I can’t keep up. I can’t seem to find sense in the headlines today. Sadly, I am stunned how people treat each other, how government is not working like it used to, and how technology is controlling our lives. All of this turmoil made me stop to assess what my role is in my community, state, and county − that as a “citizen”. With all the barrage of information, misinformation, and media noise, I don’t hear much about citizenship. It seems that discussions about civic heritage and civic responsibility have been replaced by demands of individual and group rights. This observation gave me pause to reflect about what it means to be a citizen. We have no choice where we are born, and we spend our early life learning the rules of our society. If we don’t accept these rules, we can work to change them or move somewhere else. Our rights are natural rights. They are given to us by God and cannot be taken away by anyone, including the government. You may want to refresh your knowledge of your rights by reading the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. They include free speech, press, petition, assembly, and religion; the right to privacy; the right to due process which is part of equality before the law. And to make a point − these rights may be violated, but never taken away. So what are our responsibilities? They are few, but critical to the survival of our democratic republic. They include public engagement and spirit, civility, respecting the rule of law, serving as a juror, voting, paying taxes, being informed on civic issues, and participating in volunteer and political activities, and finally, love of our one nation. Historically, success of a democratic society is that people will place the group needs above their individual needs. You have been born or chosen to live in our community. In doing so, you shall accept the moral and legal obligations of living in this community. They include personal, political, and economic responsibilities. Think about this Citizenship Participation Checklist.

Broad Ripple residents share a common bond. This is all too well felt when a tragedy occurs like 9/11, a natural disaster, or a huge success like the Super Bowl; we draw closer together. It would serve us all to think about our citizenship with all the rights and responsibilities it entails. We are blessed to be in this country. Can we raise the bar our founding fathers set so we can fully engage in our community, state, and country? After reading this article, try to come up with 10 things you are doing that shows your “good” citizenship. Ask your friends and family to also participate in the Citizen Participation List.
