The 2017 Tour De Coops had several north side houses on the route. The tour started at Agrarian, 1051 E. 54th Street [OO25 on map]. Another business stop was the tour’s sponsor, Hope Plumbing, at their future home on 52nd Street, a few blocks west of the current location. There was a cookout (hot dogs, not chicken!) and games, such as an egg toss.

Broad Ripple Community Dog Walk at Opti-Park
The Broad Ripple Community Dog Walk at Opti-Park is planned for Tuesday, October 3 from 6pm-8pm. A free and fun event to get together and enjoy a night in the neighborhood. Walk starts and ends at Opti-Park. We’ll depart at 6:15pm, arrive at the halfway point (Fresh Thyme patio) at 6:30pm and return to the park at 6:45pm to enjoy food, drink and neighbors!
Butler’s Holcomb Planetarium Goes In Search of Alien Earths
Now that you’ve seen the solar eclipse, Butler University’s Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium invites you to go farther out with In Search of Alien Earths: The Sequel to Our Solar System, a new show that highlights the exponential growth in the number of known planets outside our solar system. The 50-minute Planetarium shows are Friday and Saturday nights now through Dec. 2 (except for Oct. 13-14 and Nov. 17-18 and 24-25) beginning at 7:30 PM, with telescope viewing from 8:30-9:30 PM. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Admission is $3 for children and students under 18, and $5 for adults for the planetarium show. Viewing through the telescope is always free. For more information, visit www.butler.edu/holcomb-observatory. While most of us have grown up thinking there are eight planets, actually there are thousands, said Professor Brian Murphy, Director of the Observatory. In fact, more than 3,500 have been discovered and confirmed as planets since 1995, and another nearly 4,500 are candidates to be added to the list of planets. Visitors to the show will hear all about these Hot Jupiters, Super Earths, mini-Neptunes and more. Afterward, visitors will have an opportunity to view through Indiana’s largest telescope, weather permitting. Objects that are being observed may include the moon, the planet Saturn, M13 (a globular star cluster), Alberio (a binary star), and/or M57 (the Ring Nebula). The celestial objects viewed through the telescope change seasonally.
3-week festival features authors, films and performing arts
The JCC’s 19th annual Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts is a three-week festival featuring local, national and international authors, films and filmmakers, performing artists and fine artists. This year’s Festival of Books and Arts is Oct. 23 through Nov, 13, 2017. The highlight of this year’s festival is an appearance by Chuck Todd, NBC News political director, moderator and managing editor of Meet the Press, the flagship Sunday morning public affairs program and the longest-running broadcast in television history. Tickets to A Conversation with Chuck Todd on Wed., Oct. 25 are $25 per person for general admission. Most events are $10 per person unless noted otherwise.

- Wingo is creating new artwork inspired by the content from this year’s Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts. “I paint what I feel not what I see, using acrylics due to their quick drying time which allows me to layer my images. I mix gallons of black and white exterior house paints with my acrylics to erase and build color. I have always believed that natural shapes are perfect even with their sometimes imperfect appearance. I use them as a resource for my work.”
Pints For Half-Pints Returns This October
The Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club, along with sponsors and local breweries, will host its sixth annual Pints for Half-Pints on October 6, 2017. All funds raised from the fundraiser help support science, technology, engineering, art and math education (STEAM) in Midtown IPS Schools. Last year’s event raised over $18,000. Proceeds supported robotic clubs at School 55, 91 and Sidener Academy; scholarships to Camp Invention and music camp; computers to support after-school coder dojo clubs at School 55 and Techpoint Youth; sponsorship of girls First Lego League competition; and multiple Donors Choose projects supporting STEAM academics in midtown schools. “We’re proud to support our local schools and students by providing the resources teachers specifically request,” said Marianne Beck, Committee Chair. “The past five Pints for Half-Pints have raised over $58,000 total, and have funded everything from calculators and markers to music stands and circuit kits. And because we are a volunteer-based organization, 100% of all proceeds raised go back into our community.” The event will include craft beer from BIER Brewery, Broad Ripple Brewpub, Big Lug Canteen, Centerpoint Brewing Company, Mashcraft Brewing, Indiana City Brewing, and Thr3e Wiseman Brewing Co. Wine will again be donated by 21st Amendment Inc. Food trucks will be on-site and Indianapolis band Straight Up Chumps will provide live entertainment throughout the evening. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at The Speak Easy, located at 5255 N. Winthrop Avenue in Indianapolis. Admission is $25.00 per person and includes a souvenir pint glass (while supplies last) plus one drink ticket. Discounted tickets are available until 9/29/17. Food and additional drink tickets will be sold separately at the event. This event is for ages 21 and over. Established in October 1987, the Broad Ripple Kiwanis Club is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children in the Broad Ripple community. 100% of all proceeds raised goes back into the community. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

This is the 17th year for this fantastic folk series (housed in the Unitarian Universalist Church). I especially love that the lineup includes some favorite performers at the late-great CATH coffeehouse - which closed 13 years ago in September. They are kicking off the season with the New Augusta Bluegrass Band* on Saturday, September 30. The band has been playing together since three of them played together for a pick-up gig in 2008 and they haven’t looked back. The core of the five member band - Dave Schroeder (guitar), Lisa Wagner Schroeder (upright bass), John Gates (mandolin), Brian Lappin (banjo), and Roger Banister (multiple instruments) - is bluegrass, and they stretch the traditional lines by dipping into jazz, traditional country, rock, and Celtic music. In A Dream He had long brown hair and brown eyes. He played the guitar and sang a new song for us every day as we joyfully tilled the soil for $8 an hour.

Westfield, 64th Street, and 75th Street have all been partially closed as of late. It’s great to see our roads being repaired and upgraded. Readers Jonesy and Ben suggested I look into it after the sign went up on September 18 announcing Westfield Boulevard itself would be closed on or after September 26. Here’s the scoop from Warren Stokes of DPW: There will be no full closures, only 2 upcoming partial closures. This will allow for residential traffic to still have access to their homes. For the Westfield partial closures, there have been some recent changes to the planned detour route, I am still waiting on receiving that update. I also want to note that construction detour routes only include major thoroughfares and secondary streets. Residential streets are not used to route traffic. Below are streets in the Broad Ripple area that are either in construction or will be this year. • Ferguson St. from 64th St. to 67th St. - Start Aug. 2017, finish Oct. 2017. This street was partially closed, but should open sometime this week. No exact date since the contractor’s schedule is based on their own workload. • Carrollton Ave from 64th St. to 66th St. - Start Sept. 2017, finish Nov. 2017. This will have a partial closure. • Compton St. from 61st St to Broad Ripple Ave. - Start Sept. 2017, finish Oct. 2017 • Guilford Ave. from Broad Ripple Ave. to 64th St. - Start Oct. 2017, finish Nov. 2017 • 64th St from College Ave. to Monon trail - Start Oct., finish Nov. 2017 • Westfield Blvd. from Guilford Ave. to Winthrop Ave. - Start Sept. 2017, finish Oct. 2017 • Westfield Blvd. from College Ave. to Guilford Ave. - Start Oct. 2017, finish Oct. 2017 • Westfield Blvd. from Rivera Dr. to 65th St. - Start Sept. 2017, finish Oct. 2017 • Westfield Blvd. from 65th to Shore Island - Start Sept. 2017, finish Oct. 2017 • There are also plans for an alley between 63rd St to 64th, but this will just be storm water infrastructure improvements.

Move the Glendale Branch back to Broad Ripple
The Glendale Branch of the Library will be exiting the former shopping mall, a leased space. Let’s push to bring in back to the Village. (It used to be in BR Park where the City’s community center is across from the pool.) The City is apparently planning to build a new branch which would not open until mid-2022. I vote to move it to the Village to enhance our walkable community and diversify the mix of offerings away from bars, pizza places, and burger joints. Even better, put it in a re-purposed Broad Ripple High School.

Here is an update on the matter from IPL: A new stand-alone building for the Glendale Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library is part of an overall capital improvement program involving 11 projects to renovate or build new library facilities. These projects are being funded through individual bonds approved by the City-County Council a couple years ago. As for the Glendale project, the current projected schedule has site selection and site acquisition accomplished by mid-2018. A new branch would be scheduled to open in mid-2022. They will, as with all other construction projects, have numerous public meetings for individuals to offer input on what they’d like to see in their new branch, with opportunities to interact with the architects and to review what is planned before construction begins. The new branch would sit on approximately 6 acres. The cost would be approximately $10 million and will be funded from bonds issued in 2020.
Holliday Park Fall Festival Coming Up
Over at Holliday Park, there are a lot of Fall activities including, of course, Hauntless Halloween. Other events include: Yoga in the Park: On Saturdays (from 9 to 10:15 am) from Oct 14 to Nov 14. Pre-registration required. Field Trip to Goose Island in Linton, Indiana - Nov 4 Fall Festival: On Nov 5 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. celebrate fall at Holliday Park. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 3 in the middle section of the bottom row that contains 4-6-7-8-9. The 3 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 4. The 3 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the space between the 6-7. The only place left is between the 8-9. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. Once upon a time a fashion-forward person put away their white clothing after Labor Day. Perhaps a pair of white sneakers could still be worn, but those skirts, shirts, jackets and pants were packed away until Memorial Day of the following year. These days, it seems that anything goes when it comes to clothing color, texture and season. A lot of wine drinkers pack away their bottled whites when the temperatures drop. I for one, enjoy it year round. If you are somewhere in between, you might want to try a classic Italian white blend that is both crisp and refreshing yet smooth and comforting and can be enjoyed despite the days weather forecast. Soave (pronounced “Swah-vay”) is a town in Italy and also a region where only white wine grapes are grown. Like the French, the Italians often identify a wine on the label by the area in which its grown rather than the type of grape in the bottle. Soave is a blend of grapes. The Pieropan family has been making wine in the region for over 50 years and the 2016 blend is Garganega (gar-guhneg-uh) and Trebbiano (treb-ee-on-oh) di Soave. A floral nose of honeysuckle leads to a fruity palate with notes of apricot and pear and a nutty touch of almond with a creamy lush finish. This dry, food-friendly wine can be served chilled or at room temperature and is tasty with Indian cuisine, vegan dishes, or light proteins like chicken or fish. Affordably priced and widely available, it’s a wine worth the try if you’re easing your palate from one season to another. Jill A. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Season #3 We are now in our third season and I am exploring why this season has several quirks all its own. Have you ever thought of why we say wintertime, springtime, and summertime? Where is our “autumntime” or “falltime?” We do refer to the third season as harvest time, but not as commonly as “autumn or fall - time”. So why does this season also have several names and the other three seasons don’t? Autumn officially began on the autumnal equinox September 22nd at 4:02EDT this year. It is the mirror of the spring equinox occurring on March 21. The equinoxes are the only two points during the year where the sun is directly over the equator. These two days are the only ones where the whole earth receives exactly the same amount of daytime and nighttime. If you research fall as a topic, you will learn that spring and fall are not as old in records and literature as winter and summer. It may be that the changing seasons varied and the original two seasons referred more to hot and cold times of the year. Fall’s inclusion of the months has also varied. In days of old, it could vary from August to November or September to December. If you call this time Harvest, you are more influenced by the German traditions. The British influenced the naming of the seasons as fall or autumn, with the former being the older term. But most agree that season number three begins with the autumnal equinox and ends with the winter solstice. Whatever you call it, this time of year holds great beauty and change. The landscapes abound with color: reds, golds, oranges, and browns. Crops and gardens give a final boost of produce with seasonal items: apples, squashes, pumpkins, and persimmons. Celebrations of the last warm days of the year abound from fairs to concerts and markets. It is like the last hoorah before cold and snow appear. Holidays punctuate this time: from the Jewish holiday of Succoth or Feast of Booths or Feast of Tabernacle to Halloween, and then Thanksgiving. This is a season for celebrating bounty and blessings. We even decorate with the abundance that nature has provided: Indian corn, bittersweet, colored leaves, pumpkins, gourds, mums, and asters. In turn, it is also the season for preparation. The leaves Fall at the Broad Ripple Farmers Market. are falling, the birds are migrating to warmer climates, and backyard and forest animals are storing up food for the winter. We spend time raking, putting our yards in order, and preparing the house for inclement weather: weather stripping, storm windows, and furnace maintenance. We are also preparing for end-of-year holidays and activities. With all this bustle of preparation and doing, take the time to enjoy the crisp evenings and warm days of fall. Eat just one more caramel apple or slice of pumpkin pie. Make time to enjoy the color and the crunch of falling leaves. Rekindle the campfire and enjoy hot (proofed) cider around a fire pit. Whatever you call season 3, autumn, fall or harvest, I am wishing you all a great season when the harvest moon shines upon you.
