The committee looks at the model of the building proposed for 1430 Broad Ripple Ave.

Multi-story buildings at September zoning meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were three items on the agenda (bold below) at the September meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) Land Use and Development committee meeting. The public meetings are scheduled for the 4th Tuesday of each month at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard [KK28 on map]. There were approximately 30 in attendance. A. 927/929 Westfield Boulevard, regarding an update on the proposal to reestablish this property for use. This was a status update on the development at the south west corner of Westfield Boulevard and Winthrop Avenue, where the Broad Ripple Steakhouse and New Paradise Cafe were located. The plan is to renovate the corner building and to replace the small house to the south with a 3-story office building. The combined square footage of the project would be about 18,000. The first floor of the corner building is planned for a restaurant. The 2nd floor could be restaurant or office. The 3rd floor is office. All three floors of the south building are office. Other minor modifications were made from suggestions by the BRVA committee at a previous meeting. B. 6167 Guilford Avenue, regarding the rezoning of 0.2 acre from the SU-1 district to the D-5 district. Case number 2017-ZON-062 Hearing Thursday, October 12, 2017 This rezoning is to allow for the house south of Broad Ripple United Methodist Church to be zoned residential. It is currently zoned Special Uses 1 (SU-1) because long ago this was the parsonage for the church. This SU-1 zoning was unknown until the current occupant tried to get a building permit to add a dormer to the house. The City informed him that it was not currently zoned to be a residence. The committee voted to support this rezoning. C. 1428-1430 Broad Ripple Ave, regarding zoning changes for redevelopment of this property to commercial and residential uses. Case number 2017-ZON-067 This petition is to raze the buildings between Weaver’s Lawn and Garden and Broad Ripple Park on Broad Ripple Avenue. A retail/apartment building with integrated parking would be built on the site. The buildings on this property are the old (very old!) Wake Up gas station structures and the small retail building that contains Indy E Cigs and Broad Ripple Canine Design [H11 on map] Since the last presentation, many suggestions from the committee were incorporated. A model of the building was also presented. There were still issues raised by the committee and by audience members. The committee will wait until the Department of Metropolitan Development staff report and recommendation from the City of Indianapolis are received before voting on the petition. The next public meeting of the committee is scheduled for October 24, at 6:00 p.m. at Northminster Presbyterian Church.

Artifacts celebrates 40 years in Village By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com Jeanne Kaplan described how her store, Artifacts, originated in Broad Ripple. “My mom (Ann Kaplan) and her friend, Dotty Goldberg, decided to start the business. They were both new to Indianapolis and grew up on the East Coast. They didn’t see that kind of shopping opportunity here. My mom ran a food coop in Columbus, Ohio and had some business experience. She studied ceramics at Bennington College in Vermont. Dotty was a social worker. They opened Artifacts at 6418 Carrollton Avenue in 1977. We moved to 6327 Guilford Avenue in approximately 1980 into the former Handy Hardware location. I helped out from time to time during high school and college. I returned back in 1993 when I moved back to Indianapolis. I have a Fine Arts degree from Smith College,” she explained. Artifacts “The focus of the shop has always been American 6327 Guilford Ave. [G5 on map] contemporary crafts. We do have a few carefully selected imported items and often choose fair 317-255-1178 trade sources. We carry ceramics, glass, wood, furniture and jewelry. There are different ways that we find an artist’s work for our store. Some artists contact us. We also go to national, juried shows to buy

items in New York, Baltimore, Indianapolis and sometimes in Kentucky,” Ms. Kaplan said. She noted that Artifacts reached a retail milestone in October. “We are going to participate in the Broad Ripple Art Walk on October 13. The following Friday, October 20, we are hosting our 40th anniversary party from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. All are welcome. There will be snacks, drinks and live music. The space will be transformed by a local floral designer, Molly and Myrtle.” She reflected on the rewards of her business over time. “Two things come to mind. One is how grateful I am for our longtime loyal customer base; we have customers that have literally been shopping here since the store opened in 1977 and I enjoy that. I would also say that I enjoy the relationships with individual artists and small manufacturers– following what they are doing and what’s going on their lives.” “We have been in Broad Ripple through so many changes. The goal from the beginning was to highlight high quality, hand-made objects – to bring the human touch into people’s homes. One of the biggest things that I learned from my mom was not to pick something just because photo courtesy of Jeanne Kaplan it might sell well, but because it’s The original Artifacts on Carrollton Avenue. made well and priced reasonably. There is a definite criteria that has to be met and I think that customers have definitely recognized that,” Ms. Kaplan noted. “I think that my mom was ahead of her time. We had a kiosk at Embassy Suites downtown in a mini shopping mall area that was attached to the hotel, before the Circle Center mall opened. One time, we thought about moving north, but always concluded that the strip mall setting didn’t seem to fit us,” she mentioned. Artifacts hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from Noon to 5 p.m. Inquiries about their merchandise can be answered by calling (317) 255-1178, faxing (317) 255-5319 or e-mailing: info@artifacts.com. Their website is: www.artifactsindy.com. Artifacts remains a unique retail destination as they celebrate their 40th anniversary in Broad Ripple.

KIB and City - October Great Indy Cleanup

Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB), in partnership with the City of Indianapolis, will kick off the fall Great Indy Cleanup season on Saturday, October 7 in neighborhoods across Indy. Free resources such as dumpsters, packer trucks, gloves and trash bags are available for residents who register for a cleanup. KIB and the City’s Department of Business and Neighborhood Services, with support from the Department of Public Works and the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, coordinate annually with neighborhood associations and groups across the city to organize cleanup efforts from April to October. More than 50 neighborhood groups have registered for a Great Indy Cleanup this year. A largescale KIB staff-led beautification day is planned for October 21 in the Kennedy King neighborhood, with more than 200 volunteers coming together to care for and connect to the historic neighborhood. KIB has four ways for residents to participate in the Great Indy Cleanup: 1. Coordinate a community cleanup. Visit www.greatindycleanup.com to select a date for your community cleanup and complete the required request form to receive resources and tools (such as gloves, trash bags and access to dumpsters). Contact Allie Kast (317-264-7555) for more information. 2. Volunteer. Help a neighborhood with their cleanup as an individual or group. Visit www.kibi. org/events to sign up. 3. Adopt your block. Brandish your very own KIB litter grabber by signing up to take care of your block year-round. As a block captain, you’re eligible for cleanup supplies, free native flowers and trees. Visit www.kibi.org/adopt-a-block to join. 4. Share your impact on social media. Show your dirt! When you’re working hard to keep our streets clean, we want to know. Your efforts in the Great Indy Cleanup are also a way to join the It’s My City cleanup initiative. Share photos with @kibiorg through social media posts with the hashtags #GreatIndyCleanup and #itsmycity. In 2016, KIB’s Great Indy Cleanup collected 979 tons of trash through 366 community cleanups. The Great Indy Cleanup is made possible by generous donations from the City of Indianapolis, Kroger, Republic Services, South Side Landfill, First Financial Bank and Clif Bar Baking Company. For more information on KIB’s efforts to beautify the city or to learn how you can help, please visit us at www.greatindycleanup.com.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Georgia Buchanan Releases Third Book Indianapolis resident Georgia Buchanan is releasing her third book, How to Live beyond 90 without Falling Down, just prior to her 91st birthday. She mixes serious advice with her well-known humor to create a book of life’s lessons she has learned–and continues to practice. The advice in her book will be beneficial to persons her age (her first chapter is entitled, “Where are all the old folks? Good God, I’m 90!”), their children, and their grandchildren. Each chapter ends with a series of questions related to that chapter’s topic and a space for taking notes, making the book ideal for book clubs and discussion groups. In addition to Buchanan’s own advice, it contains quotes from notables and unknown alike that help drive home the author’s points. One quote from Dr. Mehmet Oz points out the relevance of the book: “The number of North Americans 90 and older has tripled in the past 30 years.” As described in her second book, 428-1/2: My Journey Beyond the Railroad Tracks, her memoir that begins with her growing up as the daughter of Greek immigrants in The District, a section of Indianapolis just west of downtown, she gives credit to living a long and healthy life to her wise and loving parents, her diet, a positive attitude, and making the right lifestyle choices. No one would ever guess that she’s her age–recently, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles kept checking their computers, thinking her birth year was a typo–and she is not slowing down. Just some of Buchanan’s many and varied adventures include landing in a plane on a glacier; interviewing scores of famous TV and film stars when she covered what became known as the “Golden Age of Television” for the Indianapolis News; riding a donkey to her parents’ village in Greece; becoming an accomplished painter, with her work often featuring scenes of her world travels (and she is planning yet another trip to Greece); attending Elvis’ last show (she had interviewed him many years before); being a television-show host; and, as a volunteer, organizing gala events, raising millions of dollars for charities. The book is available from IBJ Book Publishing (www.ibjbp.com), www.amazon.com, or from the author at georgiagtt@aol.com.

Like cars, community, and craft beer? This is the sixth year for this fun car show. Last year over 100 cars were displayed. I’ve enjoyed talking to the car owners and hearing about the history of the vehicles over the years. The event is family and doggie friendly. Craft beer, food, commemorative poster and tee-shirts will be available for sale. Anyone with an interesting car is invited to participate. If you have a unique, interesting, or vintage car bring it on over. No need to preregister; drive in on the 67th Street entrance and a volunteer will take your information and direct you to a spot. There is a $10 entry fee to show your car – all proceeds are donated to the Broad Ripple Village Association. There will be a best in show trophy awarded to the car with the most votes.

Put The Amazon HQ At Glendale

Many cities, including Indianapolis (both the city and the region), as well as Boone County are vying to be the site of the new Amazon corporate headquarters. Chicago thinks it is #2 in the rankings of likely sites. While the City of Indianapolis apparently favors the White River GM stamping plant site near downtown along the White River, I say put it at Glendale Mall. The Mall area is a sea of under-used or unused asphalt parking lots. The over-sized parking lots would be perfect for the new Amazon headquarters. Several high rises or mid-size buildings would fit easily on the site. Glendale is convenient to the Village and not that far from downtown and the Airport. Of course, every city is vying to get Amazon to move there so we will see. Their new headquarters in the South Lake Union area of Seattle is about the size of Glendale Mall area give or take.

One Road Closes Another Opens

We have more road closure news. Westfield Boulevard is closed through October 26 for resurfacing from Reserve Drive to 65th Street. DETOUR NB: West on Broad Ripple Avenue to College Avenue, North to 75th Street, and East to Westfield BLVD. DETOUR SB: 75th Street West to College Avenue, South to Broad Ripple Avenue, and East to Westfield Avenue. However, it appears that some of the road appears still open at some times. The barrier at Westfield and Broad Ripple Avenue is only over one lane (at the time of this writing). Also, some roads have re-opened. Welcome back: 75th Street (College to Meridian) and 65th Street: College to Westfield. Also, several readers have asked if our roads can handle all the new apartments. I’ll leave that to a future column.

Red Line Station Map, Enhanced Service Details Announced

IndyGo has released a map of the Red Line Bus Rapid station (see right). Per Jerome A. Fare inspectors will traverse the system at random intervals and ask riders to show proof of payment. Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 1 in the right section of the middle row that contains 3-4-5-6-9. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces below the 6. The 1 in the center section eliminates the space to the right of the 5. The only place left is to the right of the 4. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Most wines that hit the market are ready to drink. Timing the opening of the ones that DO improve with age can be tricky. A former neighbor, one of the original Warfleigh Winos, was visiting a few weeks ago and I decided to see how the few bottles that I have been holding for improvement were tasting. Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Vineyards makes a spectacular blend called The Mariner. It’s done in the Bordeaux “meritage” style, blending Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. These are big bold grapes that will get better with time if treated properly. Kind of like friendships. I decided to open the 2005 and 2009 as those coincided with the years many of us sampling the wines first became friends. The 2005 was loaded with dark black fruit flavors, a touch of cedar spice and a round smooth finish. The 2009 had similar notes of blackberry, plum, and black cherry. It had more of an earthy, rustic finish but still delicious. It was a wonderful evening of appreciating old friends, both in person and in the bottle. And we have the 2011 and 2013 bottles to open in another few years. Dry Creek offers up plenty of ready to drink reds for Fall–don’t miss their Merlot, Old Vines Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon wines which are widely available. Note: As I write this many parts of Sonoma county and surrounding areas are burning. The fires are massive and heart breaking. Many of my wine friends and colleagues are losing homes and businesses. My volunteer firefighting friends there are working 24/7. The Fountain Grove neighborhood of Santa Rosa where I have stayed dozens of times, is gone. Crop wise 75% of the harvest is in but many late hanging red wine grapes are not. I’ve always loved the spirit, hard work ethic and down to earth quality of the people of Sonoma county. They are farmers who value the land and are always at the mercy of Mother Nature. This week even more so.

Vol. 14 No. 21

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter State Symbols There are always birds in my life. My yard, our store, and my observations usually bring forth a notice of birds. The holidays are coming and I thought about how birds relate to them. So I made a list! • Halloween: Crows, Buzzards, Vultures, and Owls • Thanksgiving: Turkey (wild or not) • Christmas: Cardinals and Doves • Valentines Day: White Doves • Easter: Chickens and baby birds especially robins • Memorial Day: Racing Pigeons • 4th of July: Bald Eagle Did you know you have a birth month bird? Many of us know our birth flower and birth stone, and after researching birds in our lives, I found out we have birds of the month in addition to state birds.

Random Ripplings

The annual Bob Fest (honoring Bob Landman and Good Earth’s 46th year) was held at Good Earth Natural Food Store, 6350 N. Guilford Avenue [E4 on map], on October 7. Below: Lani and the Tramps

Random Ripplings This little one knew how to pose for the camera. He was at the last-of-the-season ARPO Tails and Ales pet adoption event was held at the Broad Ripple Brewpub.

If you just can’t figure out what to give someone, take a look at their birds of the month, birds of the holidays, or birds of their birth state, bird mascot, or where they are living now. At least in Broad Ripple, Indiana, the cardinal is a safe bet! Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street.
