Broad Ripple Bark Park - $15k+ upgrades By Mario Morone

mario@broadripplegazette.com

INDEX

Broad Ripple Park Manager Kathy Fitzgerald, Indy Parks Director Linda Broadfoot and Indy Parks Chief Communications Officer Ronnetta Spalding share a common bond to one of the city’s most historic recreational destinations. The three park advocates recently discussed a $15,000 grant received by the dog park there and shared some personal memories of the park itself. Last fall, Indy Parks entered the Beneful Dog Park Makeover contest, an online contest where dog park enthusiasts and park lovers could vote for their favorite dog parks. Although Raleigh, North Carolina, won the contest and the $30,000 makeover, the Beneful reps were so impressed with Indianapolis and our votes that they gave us $15,000. Each year, Broad Ripple Dog Park serves more than 800 dogs and their families. It is a great space for dogs to play and interact with their fellow furry friends. Linda Broadfoot, Director of Indy Parks, said, “We came across one of those on-line grant opportunities, the Beneful Dog Park Makeover Contest, where folks could vote. Broad Ripple residents were passionate, which was very exciting.” Ms. Fitzgerald noted, “When the Beneful Dog Park Makeover Contest occurred, there wasn’t going to be a second place. The contest was great in the sense that we saw people we don’t usually see. They provided input and even though many of have them don’t own dogs, they were excited at the opportunity.” Using the Beneful funds, Indy Parks recently unveiled agility equipment that features an archway run, dog bridge with stairs and a ramp and slide, adjustable bar jump, canine castle, and a few different obstacles. The space also includes pet-owner perks such as a leash stand, container with plastic bags for dog waste, and new benches. “We know that the Broad Ripple dog park is very well used and very well loved. We are evaluating ways to make the park grounds including the dog park even better. So, yes, there are other improvements to be made.” A partnership with additional funding from the Indianapolis Parks Foundation helped

make the recent improvements possible. Talks will continue in 2018 about additional park enhancements. “We learned how vocal and strong our advocates are. We would like to find a way to turn those voices into harnessing the parks in other ways and to connect the great things that are happening there. As Director of Indy Parks since Feb 2016, I oversee 211 parks and over 100 full-time staff and just help ensure that our amazing staff has the resources they need to reach their mission in creating places and experiences that inspire. There are 135 miles of trails, including the Monon Trail,” Ms. Broadfoot emphasized. As an undergraduate of Butler University, she spent time in Broad Ripple and had her graduation party there. She mentioned a recent, newly created event, “I love working with the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA) with the Carnival event and want to explore possible future connections with them.” Ms. Fitzgerald provided some history on the dog park that started around 1995. “Back then Beth Krouch, who was then park manager, and Indy Parks Deputy Director Don Colvin knew folks would look at the bark park in terms of a standard. There were some area citizens who were a part of the dog park in the beginning. They were ahead of their time. I was assistant park manager and opened the Broad Ripple Family Center in 2003. Just last week, somebody stopped by to donate a library book.” (The library moved to their current Glendale location around the fall of 2000.) Broad Ripple Park has been a historical destination for generations of families. Programs

created during Ms. Fitzgerald’s tenure are perennially popular. Their fall program guide offers early childhood dance, sport classes, art, and a wide range of programs. For preschool and Youth, these courses expand to art and special interest classes, like karate. Adults can participate in a dance and fitness curriculum that includes low-impact aerobics and beginning gardening. “I think we have highly qualified instructors at a reasonable price for the different classes. Another thing I’m proud of is that we have classes ranging from pre-school to seniors that can feel like this park is theirs. I used to teach and now I get the sense of seeing kids growing up,” she reminisced. A VITA tax program started by Winnie Ballard (wife of former Mayor Greg Ballard), helps people get their taxes done for free. It is made possible from a partnership with United Way. “People like Kathy are such a part of the neighborhood, offering services and classes on a daily basis. They’re really key to the vibrancy of the neighborhood and community,” Ms. Broadfoot noted. In addition to these activities, there is even more. “Through the summer, we have a lot of family reunion shelter rentals since we are centrally located. People can come in from all sides of town. I’ve noticed recently that we have a lot of special events, like basic walks in various areas for fund raising. The pool and the camp events for the summer and the Girls Rock! Group Rocks with the BRVA event are also popular. I oversee all the programming, dog park and day camp activities. We have aquatic special events, Touch a Truck, Ginger Bread Houses (December 8-9) and a Flashlight Egg Hunt for children and the dogs. It really is one of the most multi-faceted parks in the city. There is something for everyone, even taking a walk along the White River, Ms. Fitzgerald explained. Friends of Broad Ripple support many of these events Touch A Truck, Holiday Gingerbread Houses, STEM with LEGOs, Egg Hunts, Swim Lessons, Ballet and Gymnastics are also popular offerings for children and adults alike. Ronnetta Spalding is Indy Parks chief communications officer. “Before joining Indy Parks, I was not aware of everything this wonderful place has to offer. Now, I bring my kids here and we consider this to be our park. We check out what is going on inside and outside with classes, activities, and special events. When I was a Broad Ripple High School student, we walked to Broad Ripple Park to see what was going on in the park. There’s always something going on in Broad Ripple. And, it’s encouraging to see Indy Parks strengthen partnerships with Broad Ripple area businesses.” Ms. Fitzgerald is current working on the winter and spring guide that will be released soon. More information on its contents can be answered by calling the Broad Ripple Park Family Center at (317) 327-7161 or by accessing their website at: www.indyparks.org. Kathy Fitzgerald, Linda Broadfoot and Ronnetta Spalding are making Broad Ripple Park a vibrant community gathering space that inspires generations.

Indianapolis Arts Chorale Announces its 2017-2018 Season

Season Subscriptions are now available at www.indyartschorale.org Tickets to single events will go on sale for $20 each show later in the fall. Dr. Casey J. Hayes is pleased to announce the Indianapolis Arts Chorale’s 46th season, which will be his first complete term as the IAC’s new Artistic Director. In addition to continuing a long-time collaboration with the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the IAC will be making new connections with St. Mark’s United Methodist Church of Carmel, the Historic Landmarks Center, the Indiana History Center, and select elementary schools within the city center. The 2017-2018 subscription season will include: “The Sounds of the Season” - An Arts Chorale Holiday Celebration – Dec. 17, 2017 6:00pm Historic Landmarks Center 1202 N. Central Ave. It has been decades since the Chorale has performed a holiday concert. “The Sounds of the Season” will present many familiar Holiday favorites as well as some they hope will become permanent songs in your holiday repertoire. The performance takes place in the stunning Grand Hall of the Indiana Landmarks Center, 1201 N. Central Ave. in the Old Northside. Audience goers can join the singers in what has become the Chorale’s customary pre-concert reception one hour prior to the performance. The Indianapolis Arts Chorale expects this to be the beginning of a choral tradition for the central Indiana community. “The Song of Wisdom from Old Turtle” – March 10, 2018 7:00pm & March 11, 2018 3:00pm St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, Carmel Old Turtle is a beloved book by Douglas Wood. As a book, it received the 1993 ABBY award for best children’s book and is the basis for the musical work composed by renowned composer Joseph M. Martin. With elegant dream-like watercolors by Cheng-Khee Chee, “Song of Wisdom from Old Turtle” is a stirring choral and symphonic experience. Staying true to the text of the story, Joseph Martin has masterfully crafted the many characters and moods of the book into a musical fantasy for a Soprano/Alto/Tenor/Bass chorus and narrator. Brant Adams’ rich and colorful orchestration adds depth and a sense of awe to this choral symphony. The Indianapolis Arts Chorale will bring this work into select schools along with 300 copies of the book. “On The Town” - Bernstein on Broadway! May 20, 2018 6:00pm Indiana Historical Society 2018 is Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and this Centennial is being celebrated around the globe. The Indianapolis Arts Chorale joins the celebration by performing works that Bernstein wrote for the Broadway stage. From his immortal Candide to his popular adaptation of West Side Story. Dr. Hayes hopes to expose younger generations to one of America’s greatest composers. Singers invite audience members to join them as they toast Bernstein’s birthday at the pre-concert birthday party.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

It’s open enrollment time Do you lack health insurance and are under age 65? If yes, go to www. healthcare.gov to enroll. It’s very simple. You estimate your income, say if you smoke or not, and pick a plan that’s right for you (bronze, silver, or gold). There are no questions about your health or if you have any pre-existing conditions. Yes, premiums are up and choices are down (just 2 providers in Marion County) but subsidies are up so you may actually pay less for health insurance this year than last. Yes, I’m talking about the Affordable Care Act government-sponsored health plan. Think it’s cheaper to skip insurance and pay the penalty for not having health insurance? Think again. A fall or accident can land you in the hospital with thousands of dollars in medical bills billed at the full retail rate (not the negotiated insurance rate). Open enrollment started November 1 and ends earlier this year (December 15) so enroll today. Remember you may be eligible for a subsidy such that depending on which plan you pick your out of pocket cost will be affordable. Over 65? You need to pick a Medicare plan instead. Have health insurance at work? Again, you are already covered. Eligible for Medicaid or children’s health? You can apply for these separate programs all year. Clue: R equals F Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put an 7 in the middle section of the bottom row that contains 2-3-8. The 7 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 8. The 7 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the space to the right of the 2. The 7 in the center section eliminates the spaces below the 3. The 7 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the space below the 2. The only place above and to the right of the 8. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Vol. 14 No. 23

Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Bundle Up – It’s November If you feed the birds, be sure the feeders are in good repair and clean. It’s also good time to clean up under the feeder before the snow falls. If you have never fed the birds before, this is a great time to start. Getting a new feeder and the right seed or mix will give you hours of enjoyment. Let me share a few stories—It never ceases to amaze me how early children can be entertained by birdwatching. We had a mother and two-year-old come into the store to get seed. The little girl knew her names of the birds that visit her feeder. She would walk around the store and point to a bird picture and say the name of the bird. Birdman Gray, an ornithologist that has led bird walks for our store, often tells the story of growing up on his grandfather’s farm in the 50’s and learning the names of all the birds and creatures that inhabited the farm very early. This knowledge stayed with him his entire life and shaped his adult hobby of birdwatching. He has written articles, been on councils for expanding interests in birdwatching, especially for minority groups, and lead trips as a guide to faraway places. The final story is again about a young girl growing up on a farm in northern Indiana. She was given the gift of caretaker of all living things on the farm. She was quite smitten by the birds and then butterflies and moths. Her childhood was in the late 1800s. Gene Stratton-Porter grew her love of nature and especially birds into a career as an author and filmmaker in the early 1900s. She wrote columns for national magazines, such as McCall’s and Good Housekeeping, among others. Her novels have been translated into more than twenty languages, including Braille. At her height of popularity in the 1910s, she attracted an estimated 50 million readers. Eight of her novels, including A Girl of the Limberlost, were adapted into moving pictures. In fact, she owned a movie studio. So as I write, I believe it is not just about birdfeeding. It is about opening a world of nature around you and appreciating what is in your own backyard. So what’s new? Again Steve and I went to a backyard birdfeeding convention in October. We met people from the east coast, from California and Montana, and even Mexico. The hot products were flavored suets, more insect and mealworm products, and some unusual feeders. Solar everything for the yard was prevalent. Serving the Broad Ripple area, we have seen an increase in peanut feeding. Why people are turning to peanut feeding is first? The birds that are attracted to the feeder are fun to watch; and second, there is minimal, almost no, mess under the feeder. You can have multiple feeders depending on the seed or blends you want to offer. Sunflower, safflower, niger (thistle), millet are just some of the seed that feeders have been designed to dispense. There are also holders for suet, fresh or commercial, and corn. The import thing to remember is the feeders need to be easy to fill. They should also be placed near your house so you can enjoy watching all the activity. You might want to add a window birdfeeder if you want an up close observation window. This November as we get ready to spend more time indoors looking out and to purchase and give gifts, think about the birds in your yard. They would appreciate the extra food and water you provide. And, who knows, you may introduce a future author or nature advocate by sharing your birdfeeding station with others.
