It was the warmest and driest Broad Ripple Lights Up! Parade that I can remember. I counted 44 entries / vehicles in the December 3rd event – including a gull-wing Tesla, a very scary Krampus (pictures on-line, too scary for print!), and Santa at the end of the parade.

PactSafe offers an extensive and ever growing list of features to help companies get their contracts signed with simple and secure ways to send them on all devices. Entrepreneur Brian Powers recently discussed his company and his background. “I am a lawyer and represent a bunch of technology companies. I saw a gap in the way that their on-line contracts were tracked and executed, so we built a platform that would help them do that and contract with their consumers in a very seamless way. We’ve evolved into helping really any business getting contracts signed in PactSafe a very frictionless, fast way. Sometimes, that 6338 N. College Ave. means checking a box on-line and responding to [E2 on map] a text message or an electronic signature on a PDF www.pactsafe.com document,” he explained. Describing how PactSafe products work, Powers said, “It boils down to what the best way is for a business to get a contract signed. We have number of different signing methods and products on our platform that are for different types of businesses. We have an AI (artificial intelligence) that plugs into our software.” “We have what is called a text to sign document where people can sign replying to a text message. We also have a standard electronic signature and push button publishing click method to accept contracts. It’s getting our customers the tools to mold the contract to their type of business. We have clients all over the place, some

The landscaping plan for item 2. The proposed building outline is shown as a dotted line (as this only shows the first floor retail and interior parking portion).

BRVA November Land Use meeting By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com The Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) public meeting of the Land Use and Development committee was held on November 28 at Northminster Presbyterian Church. Approximately 20 in attendance. There were four items on the agenda (in bold below). 1. 6520 Cornell Avenue, Charlie Revard and Alex White regarding information on the proposal to develop a new building for the Bike Line. This proposal is to replace the existing Bike Line house with a new, larger structure. The alley to the west of the Bike Line and Renee’s Bakery would be opened and improved to allow for traffic flow. The committee decided to wait for the comments from the Department of Metropolitan Development and then take an electronic vote on whether or not to support this petition. 2. 1428-1430 Broad Ripple Avenue, Sam Zinkan, Joe Zinkan, David Toth, Garrett Lawton, Diane Johnson, Steve Zinkan regarding the zoning of 0.864 acre from c-3, D-5 and SU-37 districts, to the D-P classification to provide for a mixed-use commercial and residential development with a density of 44 unites per acre and 6,500 square feet of commercial space. Case number 2017-ZON-067 Hearing before the Metropolitan Development Commission Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. This proposal has appeared before the committee before. The model of the building was shown in issue #21 of the Gazette this year. This is a proposal to build a 4-story retail/ apartment building occupying most of the land between Weaver’s Lawn and Garden on

the west to Broad Ripple Park on the east. Several changes were incorporated into the design since the last meetings with the BRVA, including dumpster location and the overlap on the west end with Weaver’s. The petitioners stated that an agreement was reached with the property owner for the Weaver’s land, with access granted to the petitioner for the west entrance in exchange for new water and sewer connections provided by the petitioner to the Weaver’s property. The committee voted to support this petition. 3. 6247 College Avenue, Ricky Phan, Owner Basic Exchanges L.L.C. regarding the flood control plan. This petitioner did not appear, so this item was skipped. 4. 6360 Guilford Avenue, LOR Corp - razing existing structures and building a 4-story office building. This presentation showed the preliminary designs for a new 4-story office building to replace the old 3 Sisters Cafe house in the 6300 black of Guilford (3 Sisters moved to 6223 Guilford Avenue in 2014). Each 1300 sq. ft. floor has a large balcony. The variance required is for parking. The petitioner has arranged for dedicated off-site parking to provide the needed spaces. The committee decided to wait for the comments from the Department of Metropolitan Development and then take an electronic vote on whether or not to support this petition. The next public meeting of the Land Use and Development committee is planned for Tuesday, January 23 at Northminster Presbyterian Church starting at 6 pm.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Town with Nora Spitznogle I hope you’re all enjoying the good cheer of the holidays. I went a little crazy decorating my yard and porch this year. I’m turning into that neighbor. Not only do I have the big-bulb lights strung across the top of the house, I’ve added a 1950s era blow mold Santa to the lawn and a lit tree and a mannequin dressed as Santa on the porch. It’s a little over the top...in a good way. Whatever you do to celebrate and decorate, I hope it is fun and stress-free. See you next year!

They have an awesome party planned to celebrate including: DJ Marcus playing the hits, largest cash balloon drop in The Vogue history, live dancers and performers, drink specials from each decade (I wonder if the 80s special will include Midori?), pyrotechnics and laser show, party favors and champagne toast. What a fun and festive way to bring in the 40th anniversary year of The Vogue and the new year!

Poetic Thoughts

Rumi Speaks Below is a poem from the voice of the great whirling dervish Rumi.

From RUMI Let me seduce you with the sound of the Cosmic wire. Let it tangle around your heart and drain into flower wine. Year In Review And Resolutions For 2018

What column is not complete with a year in review (and a preview of the upcoming year)? And what a year it has been for Broad Ripple Village. Highlights include: ● The announcement by IPS that Broad Ripple High School will close ● The repairs of roads in the Village ● The opening of the new Coil Apartments/Fresh Thyme Market/Canal Walk (as well as the 66th th Street Flats) ● The start of construction on the new building behind McDonald’s on Westfield Boulevard and the new apartments on Westfield Boulevard (the old pool facility)

● The expansion of the Hotel Broad Ripple ● Further planning of the Red Line bus rapid transit line which will run along College Avenue ● The destruction of the old growth Sycamore trees along the White River (part of the Army Corps of Engineers flood control project)

Resolutions And Hopes For 2018

Here are a few thoughts on the state of affairs in the Village and resolutions for 2018.

The beleaguered Broad Ripple Pool

Let’s hope the Broad Ripple Pool has a better year next summer. This year the too short two month season ended abruptly after a pool pump failed and it took a month to replace the part which was apparently ordered out of state. When I moved here, the pool closed after Labor Day (not August 8), was open some weeknights, and had longer hours. Now it opens after Memorial Day and closes on August 8 (and is also closed Mondays). It’s hardly worth it. The pool should at least stay open through Labor Day (or at least on weekends). Maybe it should be sold to a private operator or the operations out sourced.

More street lights and street repair

Broad Ripple still needs more basic infrastructure—especially with all the new development. While it is fine to hope that such development is transit oriented, there are

Dec 15 - Jan 4, 2018

too many streets in need of repaving and there are too few street lights. Indy seems to skimp on basic infrastructure. We can’t with all the new development.

Competitive challenges facing the Ripple

The Village is basically competing with downtown, Fountain Square, and Carmel for the resident growth so we need to stress what we have that they don’t. This includes our Monon Trail, great parks (Broad Ripple, Holliday, and Marott), proximity to shopping on 86th Street, and diversity. We need to grow beyond a bar and pizza/hamburger hang out place. (I love all 3 but does every new business need to be one?)

Relocation of Glendale Library

Glendale Library will be exiting the mall for a new location. Let’s bring it back to the Village.

Second thoughts on transit

While I love the idea of bus rapid transit and the innovative BlueIndy shared car system, I don’t see a lot of folks using either. No need to wait for the Red Line. The #17 and #18 IndyGo buses already serve downtown with high frequency. Also, the idea that millennials will flock to the Red Line when they don’t seem to take IndyGo much now concerns me.

In other news Winter Market Opens

Don’t miss the Broad Ripple Winter Market which runs Saturdays from 9 to 12 at 5301 Winthrop (Bent Rail Brewery). Also weekends through the holidays is the Winter Market in Carmel which is from Wednesday through Sundays (and includes an ice rink, food, and adult beverages).

Art Center Student Show Debuts

On December 15, the 80th Annual Student Show Exhibition Opening will be held from 6-9 pm. See the largest juried exhibition of work made by our students. Each year more than 400 works are submitted and only some of the works are selected by the judges to be displayed. Note that the Art Center will also be closed for the Holidays December 23 through January 1.

George’s is now Raffi’s Mexican Tacos at 801 Broad Ripple Avenue H4 on map].

On December 6th, Noble of Indiana and the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club held their 59th annual Holiday/Christmas party at the Northside K. of C. Hall. Since 1958, Sertoma has provided more than 1,100 children with this festive holiday experience. Christmas gifts purchased by Sertoma members and Noble of Indiana staff were distributed by “Santa” and Mrs. Claus, at a luncheon hosted by the two organizations. Each year the therapists at Noble select 20 of their clients who have qualified for help as part of the First Steps program of Indiana which includes children ranging in age from one to five. The Noble staff provided transportation for each child and family members, and Sertoma members and spouses helped provide a true holiday atmosphere, by purchasing Christmas gifts specific to each child. President and CEO of Noble of Indiana, Julia Huffman, was presented with a check for $4,015 from the Broad Ripple Sertoma Club. Noble is one of the primary fund raising recipients of Sertoma.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 1 in the right section of the top row that contains 3-4-8. The 1 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces below the 4. The 1 in the left section of the top row eliminates the space between the 8-4. The 1 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both side of the 3. The only place left is two spaces below the 8. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

HOLIDAY CHEER

I’ve been pouring a lot of private wine events lately. Always fun to educate, entertain and converse with people about one of life’s simplest pleasures, wine. The star of the show has been the scrumptious and hard to find Late Harvest Torrontes from Familia Zuccardi in Argentina. I visited the winery a decade ago and am happy to say the quality, care and charm I experienced with their wines then, continue today. Which is why people LOVE this unique presentation of the Torrontes grape. It’s usually bottled as a dry white wine, with a flavor profile similar to that of Sauvignon Blanc. When it’s left on the vine, the grape sugars condense and when pressed, the silky juice offers up aromas and flavors of mango, pineapple and honeysuckle. We call it “Heaven in a glass”. The Santa Julia label comes in a half bottle size that makes it a terrific stocking stuffer. If you can keep yourself from drinking it before you gift it.

HO! HO! OH!

Wasn’t Broad Ripple Lights Up fun? As we become more of an urban village with a towering skyline, it was fun to experience the simple pleasure of a parade. Kudos to the people, pets, and percussionists who waved and smiled to all of us as we lined the streets. Backyard Birds Brandt Carter in her little red corvette. The Minion on the firetruck. And Santa, flipping the switch on the new lights along the canal were only eclipsed by the Super Moon that appeared and added even more Christmas magic to the evening.

YE MERRY GENTLEMEN

One of the contributing artists in the new 10th West Gallery in the downtown Stutz Building, is Warfleigh resident David Kleeman. David gives sculpture a whole new meaning blending found objects with his own creations using metal, wood and ceramics. His astonishing work involves hours of time and thought. He’s too humble to offer that information up on his own, but ask and he’ll share the story behind the piece. Hear it and you’ll want his art in your home. Ashland Gallery in Broad Ripple is where the talented teacher/artist Johnny McKee offers life changing experiences for young adults with Down’s Syndrome and Autism. This is another gallery where you need to hear the story to fully appreciate the energy and beauty of the creations. This month in addition to the work of his students, Johnny showcases some of his abstractly soothing pieces with the effervescent work of Kipp Normand. Kipp is what I call an archaeological artist. He uncovers art in both the everyday and unexpected places, then puts them together in a way that will stir your soul. Jill A. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Backyard Birds Legend “How Santa Knows Who’s Naughty or Nice” One day, a chickadee lit on my feeder and began singing. His song told me a Christmas tale about the year Santa Claus lost the List. Goodness, Santa didn’t know who had been naughty or nice. There was no list! Three days before the big night, Santa was still searching his house, workshop and stable – no list. The Mrs. could be of no help because she had to bake her stollens and kugels to finish her holiday projects. Meanwhile, Santa bellowed, “Where is the List? There will be NO Christmas. I don’t know who has been naughty or nice!” After much rummaging and fretting, there was a peck, peck, peck at the window. Two snowy owls that lived in the hollow of the old tree outside the kitchen window pecked until they got Santa’s attention. “Can we help?” they asked. Santa replied, “Oh, if only. You see, I have no list. Without it, there will be no trip and no gifts!” The two wise owls put their heads together to try to save Christmas. They knew the reindeer could not help because they had to save their strength for the big night. The snowshoe hares were too small to hop very far. The seals only went as far south as the California Coast – not far enough. The elves were too busy making last minute gifts. Was there no one at the North Pole to help? Was there no magic left – no miracles? Finally, the aha! Only one group could help: the birds of the world. All the owls had to do was fly far enough south to issue the alert. Because birds inhabited almost every earthly corner, each bird could go to the home of a boy or girl and watch to see who was naughty or nice. Then the birds would report back so Santa could make the List again. That is exactly what happened. Christmas was saved. Santa wrote the List again because “a little bird told him so”… That is, who was naughty or nice. Because all the gifts were delivered on time that year so long ago, birds have been very much a part of every Christmas celebration ever since. Feeding the birds a special treat is an important part of the holidays – a sheaf of wheat, seed wreaths, fruit and nuts. And this is why having a bird’s nest in your Christmas tree brings luck for the New Year. Brandt Carter, artist, herbalist, and naturalist, owns Backyard Birds at 2374 E. 54th Street. Visit her web site www.feedbackyardbirds.com. Email your bird questions to Brandt@BroadRippleGazette.com
