IPL encourages customers to prepare for the winter season

Indianapolis Power & Light Company (IPL), a subsidiary of The AES Corporation (NYSE: AES), encourages customers to take steps in advance to be prepared for winter weather this season. IPL customers can fight the winter chill with convenient and easy resources available to help bear the burden of extremely cold days. Here are some helpful safety and energy-efficiency tips to consider as temperatures fall. Be safe at home: • Avoid using appliances such as stoves and ovens to heat your home. • Always use caution when using alternate heat source such as fireplace, wood stove, portable/ kerosene heater or electric heaters, practice fire safety, provide for proper ventilation and follow all manufacturer’s safety guidelines. • Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are working properly. • Never leave candles unattended and remember to keep them away from children and combustible materials. • Take precautions with your pets and limit their time outside. Be smart about energy use: • A general rule of thumb is to set your thermostat on 68 degrees or lower to save on heating costs. • Close all doors, windows, and screens. You may want to purchase inexpensive window kits to cover unused windows and doors with plastic. • Prevent drafts by closing fireplace dampers when not in use. • Use IPL PowerView to see your daily and monthly energy use, how weather affects energy usage with actual weather factor overlays, view bills over time, and more. IPL also encourages customers to be weather aware and prepared. The Outage Information Center on IPLpower.com offers easy outage reporting, safety tips, preparedness tips such as what to pack in an emergency kit, and suggestions on how to form a “Storm Squad” if you need to enact and emergency plan. IPL also encourages customers to follow us on Twitter at @IPLpower where we make every effort to provide relevant, real-time outage updates.

Indianapolis Art Center Announces Grant From The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust

The Indianapolis Art Center has received a grant totaling $25,000 from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust to conduct a charrette to explore activating the riverfront at the Art Center as a cultural, environmental and recreational resource for the Broad Ripple and greater Indianapolis community. The Art Center is located on nine acres of land at the confluence of the White River and the Monon Trail just north of Broad Ripple. The area, known as the ArtsPark, is freely accessible and open to the public. This charrette will allow the Art Center to explore how to further leverage this unique location to create a relevant and community-driven riverfront experience. Facilitated by Williams Creek Consulting, a range of organizations with a stake in the community, knowledge of the White River or expertise in architecture and landscaping will be involved in the “Facing the River” project charrette. Ultimately, through their combined expertise, this group will create a vision for a riverfront that inspires visitors through the convergence of art and nature, provides increased access to the White River, and conserves and protects the delicate river ecosystem. “With a population boom in Broad Ripple, ongoing foot traffic along the Monon Trail, and the coming of a Red Line stop just blocks from the Art Center, this is the perfect time to be embarking on this project,” Indianapolis Art Center President and Executive Director Patrick Flaherty said. “We appreciate this grant from the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, which allows us to work with the greater community as we begin to plan this exciting project. The Art Center’s campus can be an amazing resource to the community with great potential to celebrate the conjunction of creativity and nature, bring new audiences to the arts, and showcase a beautiful stretch of the White River.” “During her career, Nina Mason Pulliam shared her financial success and business leadership skills with many charities. She had a keen awareness of challenges that face our community and would take great pride in the outstanding work being done by organizations like Indianapolis Art Center,” said Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust Trustee Kent Agness. “Through her Trust, we continue to build on her legacy, which clearly reflects her heart for philanthropy.” The grant to Indianapolis Art Center represents one of 29 awarded to organizations in Indiana by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust during the second of two grant cycles this year. Since the Trust began its grant making in 1998, it has awarded more than $292 million to 963 organizations in its home states of Indiana and Arizona. For more information about the Trust and its programs visit www.ninapulliamtrust.org.

Live Christmas Tree Recycling Drop-Off Dates

The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (DPW) and Indy Parks are teaming up to help recycle live Christmas trees for the city’s residents. Through Wednesday, January 31, trees without any decorations can be dropped off at Broad Ripple Park (1610 Broad Ripple Ave.) south lot. Trees must be free of tinsel, lights, tree stands and all other decorative materials in order to recycle them properly. Trees can be dropped off from dawn to dusk. The Indianapolis tree recycling program diverts waste from landfills and the waste-to-energy facility. This service recycles trees for sustainable landscaping resources, such as mulch and soil blends. The Christmas tree recycling program is NOT for commercial use, and is intended solely for residents of Marion County. Please respect our parks and do not dispose of anything other than trees during this time.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Around Town with Nora Spitznogle Happy New Year lovely readers! If the extended forecast was correct, it’s darn cold outside as you’re reading this. Here are a few ways to warm your heart and your toes in upcoming weeks.

Eighth Annual Year in Review Quiz Tuesday, January 9 Broad Ripple Brew Pub 842 E. 56th Street all-ages, 7 pm, free

I’m going to brag. I was on the winning quiz team last month, although my biggest contribution was being able to identify area churches and their festivals from photographs - staying true to my Catholic roots and love of church festivals. You can find Quizmaster Billy’s previous month’s quiz questions and answers in this paper. If you’d like to play, gather your team or form one from folks at the pub. There is also a prize for the best team name, so be thinking of one. This is a special year end edition, the quiz is typically held on the last Tuesday of the month - mark your brand new shiny calendar for Tuesday, January 30 also.

The Vogue is celebrating 40 years as a music venue and Big Head Todd and the Monsters are in their 34th year as a band. I know I’ve seen Big Head Todd at the Vogue several times over the years. I’m glad the band is still touring and that The Vogue is still hosting live music. When the band was here last year they did double duty that day, playing in the Super Bowl parade in Denver and at The Vogue that night. They have written music at the request of Space Shuttle astronauts and their songs have been featured everywhere from presidential campaigns to feature films. They have something for everyone - rock, blues, and jam tunes.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. Baby it is cold outside Being from Wisconsin, I am used to cold weather like the cold snap we are having here in Indy. However, in Wisconsin, homes and apartments have much better insulation. Double pane windows are not uncommon. Business have two doors (one for the outside, and then a hallway, and then another door that let’s you inside the business). When it snows, they plow every street. In short, because winter is longer there, you don’t notice it as much as you do here where we treat it as a short-term annoyance. Stay warm.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put an 6 in the left section of the top row that contains 1-3-7-9. The 6 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 9. The 6 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces below the 7. The 6 in the left section of the bottom row eliminates the space above the 9. The only place left is the upper-most left corner space. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

2017 – what a year. I’m a fan of history, especially if we learn from our lessons. 2017 enabled us to be stalwart students of politics, nature, and social activism, if we chose to be. When we graduate and how we use our “degree” is up to us. When it comes to wine, it was also a year of learning from the past to accept the present and prepare for the future. More family wineries being sold. Drought, rain, fire, compromising crops. Stricter export and import regulations. In Indiana, we may finally be able to quench our thirst on a Sunday, if we want to purchase alcohol. (But if you need a cold beer, you’ll have to plan your shopping trip.) I’m not big on “best of” or “bucket” lists as I think every day is a chance to find something that satisfies that desire. But there were a few from the many wines sampled this past year that moved to the top of my satisfaction list. Gerard Bertrand Cote des Roses Languedoc – crisp dry pink wine with notes of red fruit and a smooth clean mineral finish. Cavicchioli Prosecco 1928 – gorgeous bottle outside, elegant, smooth off dry bubbly inside. Prophecy Pinot Noir – is this wine really less than $10? Smooth, juicy, dry red with notes of cranberry, cardamom, cherry. Easy drinking, California style of this grape makes it a great “starter” red for those wanting to ease their way into more complex red wines. Hmmm.... maybe the label and taste profile can set the tone for 2018. Jill A. Ditmire is an Omnimedia wine specialist, AWS certified wine judge, freelance broadcast journalist and 20+ year home owner in the Warfleigh neighborhood of Broad Ripple. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Resolution Recipes: Starting Strong In 2018 While the new year signals the official end of holiday parties, it does welcome healthy beginnings and resolutions. Maybe you’ve set some culinary/nutritional goals and are working hard to achieve them? Why not emphasize your efforts with some eats that satisfy your plans and your taste buds? The recipes featured today are great for entertaining and daily use alike. They are also designed to align with any financial goals you may have as they don’t contain any exotic (read: expensive) ingredients. Give these recipes a whirl and you’ll be the life of the party, whether you share them at the office, or in your own living room. For Breakfast or Early Morning Meetings, try serving these with coffee and fresh fruit:

Random Ripplings

Huntington Bank, 724 Broad Ripple Avenue [H3 on map], has been completely remodeled.

Carrot Cake Muffins 1 ¾ cup whole wheat flour 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup honey 2 eggs ½ cup vanilla yogurt (I like Greek-style) ½ cup applesauce ½ cup chopped walnuts 1/3 cup raisins 1 cup grated apple 1 cup grated carrot 1/3 cup coconut oil In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking powder, cinnamon, baking soda, and salt. Whisk to combine, then add carrot, apple, raisins and walnuts. Mix well. In a second bowl, combine the honey, coconut oil, eggs, yogurt, and applesauce and mix well. Pour this mixture into the dry mixture and combine. Divide the batter evenly into 12 muffin cups. (I use a non-stick muffin pan, but if you don’t have one, use paper liners or prepare the cups with non-stick spray) Bake for 13-15 minutes in a preheated 425 degree oven. Cool and enjoy. These will keep, covered at room temperature for up to two days or in the refrigerator about four. They also freeze well. Want a healthy but hearty main dish to feed your crew or maybe you’re hosting book club this month? I’m LOVING this healthy version of an old favorite.

Cabbage, Sausage & Potato Soup 1 pound chicken or turkey kielbasa sausage, cut into bite-sized pieces 4 leeks, sliced 3 carrots, sliced 2 stalks of celery, including leafy tops, chopped 2 tablespoons of olive oil 2 teaspoons minced garlic 1 cabbage, cored and chopped 8 cups of vegetable (or chicken if you prefer) stock 1 pound diced potatoes (I like red potatoes) 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon dried rosemary 1 bay leaf salt and pepper to taste In a stock pot, over medium heat, sauté the sausage until browned. Remove the sausage and add the oil, carrots, leeks and celery to the pot. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add garlic, then cabbage and sautée for another five minutes, still stirring. Add the stock, herbs, potatoes, cooked sausage and bay leaf. Stir to combine and bring to a simmer. Continue to simmer for about 20 minutes. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed. I like to serve this piping hot with a crisp green salad and crusty bread. A traditional Pilsner is a strong match for this meal. The stew can be made ahead and frozen for up to three months.

www.broadripplegazette.com My grand finale today is a funky little brownie recipe that is sure to please, just don’t divulge the ingredients to your guests. Seriously. You will read through this and not believe that it can be good. Healthy, yes. Good, no. But they REALLY are excellent. Give them a try and see what you think.

So Good Brownies ¼ cup vegetable oil (I like coconut) 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips ½ cup honey ¼ teaspoon salt ½ cup quick oats 2 tablespoons cocoa powder (I like Hershey’s extra dark) 1 ½ cups canned black beans, rinsed and drained Dump ALL of the ingredients into your food processor and blend until REALLY smooth. Pour the batter into a greased 8x8 inch pan (or a stick-free if you have one). At this point, you can add some more chips to the top for decoration or to change the flavor a bit (for instance, a hand-full of raspberry chips, or peanut butter or butterscotch-–you get the idea. This is totally optional). Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes. Cool completely before attempting to cut. You can hurry this process along by sticking them in the fridge if you need to. These brownies are great as they are, but delicious with a scoop of frozen yogurt if you are so inclined. As always, I’m curious to know if you enjoy my suggestions so please drop me a line or let me know if there’s something you’d really like me to write about. I’m here for you. Bon Appetit!
