Founder, Editor-in-Chief and Neurologist Adam Fisch described the inspiration for his medical and science illustration company. “As a student, I found that sort of the best check on my knowledge was if you could draw out the information, then you had this internal schema that you could apply to anything else you could learn about it. It didn’t matter what the course in medicine was – chemistry, anatomy, physics - everything could be broken down into a simplistic schema. Then you could rehearse it that rehearsal would be the learning process. Draw It to Know It and The first time I could really formalize it was when 6507 Ferguson Street I was an intern teaching other medical students Suite 102 [C4 on map] about the cranial nerves. I discovered the best www.drawittoknowit.com way to teach was to distill it into its simplest component. Taking it and breaking it down into simple components and then building it back up. If you work through science like an instruction manual, you’ve become an active participant in the learning process. I’ve been working on things like this since medical school, but we started the real incarnation of the businesses in Broad Ripple about two and a half years ago, setting up shop in the summer of 2015 at 6507 Ferguson Street, Suite 102,” he explained. The location was an easy diagnosis for Dr. Fisch. “This is where I grew up. There’s no better place in Indiana than right here.” Draw It to Know It offers individual courses at various academic levels. At the graduate/medical level, they teach Neuroanatomy, Gross Anatomy, Physiology, Embryology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Histology, Immunology/Microbiology, Pathology and Pharmacology. Undergraduate courses include Neuroscience Fundamentals, Anatomy & Physiology, Biochemistry Fundamentals and General Biology, Embryology and histology fundamentals. High school courses consist of Advanced Placement (AP) Biology and Anatomy & Physiology Fundamentals. They also help students prepare for the MCAT (Medical College Admissions Test in Biology & Biochemistry, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Boards and ABPN Neurology Boards MOC (Maintenance of Certification). There are various discounts offered for large groups, of course, or test subscribers for residency programs, student groups, individual classes, academic departments, institutional licenses and hospital libraries. I split my time as a practicing neurologist and working here in addition to teaching. My grandfather and father were cardiologists.” photo courtesy of Adam Fisch After studying English Neurologist Adam Fisch the founder of Draw It to Know It. as an undergraduate, he discovered his path into medicine. “I always liked the balance of reading, writing and doing science problems and working through them. I thought that one always balanced the other. That’s what I bring together here in these courses.” Dr. Fisch graduated from the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2004. He recalled a certain physician who inspired him. “A mentor of mine was the late Bill DeMyer at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He once said, ‘if you can’t draw it, you don’t know it.’ He was iconic in the neuroanatomy lab there.” A scholarship was established in Dr. DeMyer’s name by the IU Medical Class of 1972 at their 25-year reunion in 1997 honoring him. “This most rewarding thing about my work is having students who recognize the power of just how effective this process can be in their education. When you have a student who is struggling and finds our website (www.drawittoknowit.com), getting over the hump in their education in learning, that’s why we’re here. It really is an honor to help students get through their science education,” Dr. Fisch reflected. As a neurologist, educator and entrepreneur, Dr. Adam Fisch is teaching tomorrow’s physicians and scientists today from the best place in Indiana, which just happens to be in Broad Ripple.

This old photo was sent in by reader and 1968 Broad Ripple High School alumna Tom Nygaard. Tom owns Nygaard Service at the corner of Kessler and College Avenue (bottom picture). The photo he sent in to the Gazette shows his building back in the 1950’s when it was a Mobil Service Station. Tom mentioned that the building section with the glass block that has been removed, was a Mobil Training Station. He also pointed out that you can see the Indiana Bell building (now AT&T) back when it had windows and art deco features. My records show the Indiana Bell building was built around 1940.

New Studio Gallery for Interiors Opening in BR Village
Friday, Jan. 19, 2018 marks the grand opening of H. Josephine Home, a studio gallery specializing in art, antiques, home furnishings, accessories and design services, says proprietor and curator Mandy Skelton. The new business is located in Broad Ripple Village at 6516 Carrollton Ave., near 8 Fifteen clothing boutique and the Cake Bake Shop. H. Josephine Home’s focus will be . . . •Art. The studio gallery offers original artwork from several artists, all selected by Skelton from New York’s Garvey|Simon gallery and Pace Prints. •Antiques and furnishings. This includes both one-of-a-kind antique and vintage pieces and items from premier furnishing lines such as The Lacquer Company. •Home goods and accessories. Skelton’s studio gallery carries a curated selection of luxury home goods, including Tatine Apothecary products, Saved New York cashmere throws and blankets, Baobab Collection candles, and baskets from The Basket Room. •Design. MKNA Welcomes Chelsea Marburger as Next Exec. Dir.
Chelsea Marburger, former Director of First Impressions for HI-FI, MOKB Presents and Do317 Media, has been named the next executive director of the Meridian-Kessler Neighborhood Association. Marburger officially assumed the role at the beginning of the year following the 30year tenure of Caroline Farrar. “The MKNA Board is excited to welcome Chelsea to the organization with great anticipation for using her nonprofit leadership to take us to the next level,” said MKNA Board President Nick Colby. “At the same time, the Board acknowledges and honors Caroline Farrar who has led the organization with steadfast devotion and determination for more than 30 years.” Farrar joined MKNA in 1984 and has been integral in the growth and success of the neighborhood from engaging local civic organizations, corporate sponsors and the residents alike. “My involvement with MKNA has been rich with rewards,” said Farrar. “The diversity, demands, challenges and repeated heartwarming moments have been memorable. In addition, Marburger serves on the Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana Young Leaders Board as well as the CHIP (Coalition for Homeless Intervention and Prevention) Young Professionals Board. “Filling the shoes of a powerhouse like Caroline Farrar is going to be a full-time job,” said Marburger. “I’m looking forward to learning from her during the transition and bringing my passion of all things Indianapolis to the table.” In addition to Marburger’s community service, she also served as the Director of Civic Engagement for the Indianapolis City Market for a number of years under Executive Director Stevi Stoesz. Through thoughtful programming, successful grant procurement and event production, the mighty, three-person staff ushered in a new era at the Indianapolis City Market that continues to grow and cater to the ever-changing needs of the community.

Indpls Artist Phil O’Malley Works Featured in Show
Local artist Phil O’Malley will discuss featured works in a public art exhibit opening reception Friday, Feb. 9, 6:30-8 p.m. at Tarkington Tower Condominium, 4000 N. Meridian St., Indianapolis. A professional studio artist and designer in Indianapolis, O’Malley has painted the past four decades here in the Midwest after having lived his first decade about 40 miles west of Cape Cod. He creates two- and three-dimensional works in fine and culinary arts, interior design, as well as architectural, graphic and event design. He says all of the endeavors have symbiotically fed his art to maturity. O’Malley studied Interior Design and Construction Technology in the Purdue School of Engineering and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Herron School of Art and Design at IUPUI. The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Uncle Dan’s Movie Night – Dan Wakefield with Steve Allee, Sophie Faught Tuesday, January 30 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Ave - 21+, doors 5:00, show 6:00, $18
This evening has it all: film, discussion, and music! New York in the Fifties, the documentary film based on Dan Wakefield’s memoir and produced by Betsy Blankenbaker, will kick off the evening. The film features Joan Didion, James Baldwin, Gay Talese, David Amram, William F. Buckley, Norman Mailer, and Dan himself. After the viewing, Dan will discuss the movie and answer questions. Steve Allee, the jazz pianist/composer who wrote the music for the film, will be there in person to play songs from the movie, along with star saxophonist Sophie Faught. I love the book and I’m anxious to see the film. The book was published in 1992,
but I didn’t read it until a couple of years ago. I so appreciate Dan’s enthusiasm for his New York in the 1950s, and his sweet way of telling the stories. As an Indianapolis native, he really soaked in and appreciated his new town and everything it offered. Those were heady times in the big city. How great is it that we get a chance to watch the movie with Dan, hear the music being played by the man who wrote it – Steve Allee, and enjoy the music of Sophie Faught? The Jazz Kitchen is the perfect venue – I know I’ll be pretending that I’m sitting in a jazz club in New York City with Dan in the 1950s.

Construction Starts On Bus Rapid Transit Line

If you saw the new flashing sign at College and 67th Street or elsewhere, you probably wondered what it meant. I am referring to the sign “Construction on Red Line Starting Soon”. IndyGo’s Jerome Home was kind enough to answer my questions about the new bus rapid transit line (aka The Red Line) that will link Broad Ripple with downtown. When will construction start in Broad Ripple? IndyGo is working with the construction contractors on the exact sequencing of when and where construction will happen. A detailed construction schedule will be ready by mid-January. The schedule will be posted to the Red Line Website and available at upcoming public meetings. Will lanes be closed on College Avenue in Broad Ripple? There will be periodic lane restrictions on College Avenue. There are no plans for full street closures. At times it will be necessary to shift traffic over to the east or west sides of the street and have occasional flaggers directing traffic flow. Some signalized cross streets such as 49th Street will have closures during construction in order to construct improvements such as ADA accessible curb ramps, better pedestrian crossings, and utility relocations. Construction contractors are looking for ways to minimize this impact. Where will the stations be in Broad Ripple? The stations located in Broad Ripple North to South are: 66th St., Broad Ripple, Kessler, 54th St., 52nd St., 46th St., and 42nd St. How long will the construction last and what does it entail? Construction will generally last 3 to 4 months in any one location and is most impactful at intersections where stations are located. There will be utility relocation and drainage work done on the east and west sides of the

street. Road resurfacing and repaving will also take place. • At intersections: Curb ramp improvements, sidewalk improvements where necessary, additional inlets, upsized stormwater pipes as needed (this will improve drainage), curb bump-outs at some locations (Minimizes the distance pedestrians have to cross the street), and localized relocations of signal/utility poles to meet ADA requirements. • At stations: Station platform – 15” high, approx. 70-80’ feet long and 12’ wide, station structure (Roof canopy), and ticket Vending Machines, security cameras, lighting, ramps, bollards, communications equipment • Along College: Diverter islands at non-signalized cross-streets, resurfacing of entire street, new pavement markings, raised Mountable Median (4” high, 18” wide,) This will be in the middle of the dedicated lane for buses on College, curb bump-outs at select locations, and new signals at 61st Street, entrance to Broad Ripple Parking garage, and new pedestrian signal at 52nd Street station. Additionally, IndyGo will be hosting two public open house meetings in Broad Ripple to update the public on the construction. January 24, 12:30 pm @ College Ave Library (4180 N College Ave), and the other on January 25 , 6 pm @ The Vogue (6259 N. College Ave). Record Electric Bills May Be Coming
If you have electrical heat like me, this brutal winter can be brutal on your IPL bill. I bought film insulation to put over my windows so I stop heating the outside. It still wasn’t enough. The record cold temperatures in late December and early January mean higher electric bills may be coming for many of us. IPL’s power view estimates my bill may be up more than 50% over last year. (You can monitor your daily usage and daily cost on their on line system known as PowerView. Vist www.IPLPower.com). During extreme drops in temperature, similar to what central Indiana has experienced this past week, systems work much harder to attain a set temperature. If the outside temperature is extremely cold, the desired temperature inside may never be reached. Furthermore, using additional heat sources to compensate for the cold weather also has the potential to increase electric utility bills. IPL understands that high winter bills can be a financial challenge for customers, so here are five resources available to help customers manage costs: 1. Budget Billing allows customers to pay about the same amount for 11 months and then settle the difference on the 12th month. 2. Payment Extensions can be requested online at IPLpower.com or by calling the automated system at 317.261.8222 and selecting option 2 from the main menu. 3. Preferred Bill Date is offered for IPL customers who want a due date that best matches their paydays. 4. Financial Assistance is available by calling the Connect2Help line at 2-1-1. 5. PowerView is an energy efficiency program and web-based tool that offers charts and graphs depicting monthly and daily energy usage, allows you to see bills over time, and compares you to similar households nearby. Beach Bummed Bottle I spent the first week of the New Year on Siesta Key, Florida. No, the temps were not as brutal as they were in the Ripple, but for Floridians it was a shock. For me, it felt like Spring in Indiana. Mostly sunny, temps in the low 50’s with brisk north east winds at 25mph. Yes, wind chills were into the 30’s many days, but I just bundled up and took in as much of the beach as I could. The cooler weather did make us reach for RED wine instead of zippy whites or crisp dry roses. Florida has a plethora of wine choices available virtually everywhere on any day. Drug stores, convenience stores and of course big box and grocery stores are stocked. I had brought a few bottles to share with friends and family on New Year’s Eve and the day after we went hunting for more bottles of red. Our favorite find was the old vine Zinfandel called OZV from Oak Ridge Winery in Lodi, California. The older the vines, the richer the wine when it comes to the Zinfandel grape. It was once thought to be “America’s” grape as for many years growers only found it in California. Later it was traced to be a descendant of the Italian Primitivo, and Croatian grapes Crljenak Kaštelanski and Tribidrag. OZV is smooth and dry with notes of cardamom and blackberry. We ignored the “red for meat, white for fish” thought and enjoyed it with shrimp, Caesar Salad and pasta. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter REFLECTION* The 2017-18 holiday season was quite different for us. We traveled and escaped all the pre-holiday madness. No tree decorating, no shopping, and few parties. We arrived just in time to celebrate a very quiet Christmas and then, the thermometer dived. Those weeks after the merriest day of the year were frigid and encouraged hibernation. I did just that. I spent hours having coffee and doing no projects. I just reflected on my trip and enjoyed the photos I had taken. Also to fill those long cold days were the distractions out my window. My backyard gave me the activity I needed to avoid the feeling of cabin fever! This was the first cold snap of 2017 and even the store felt the change. When it is bitter cold outside and especially blanketed with snow, the birds want and need to visit the feeders you have. We had a steady stream of wonderful birds, and the store sold record amounts of seed and suet. One morning, I decided to make a list of the birds that came to my feeders which included: a tube feeder filled with a birdseed mix, a pole feeder filled with sunflower seed, a hut-like feeder filled with shelled peanuts, a suet feeder, and a trough with a mix of table scraps and peanuts. This buffet was enough to create a steady stream of birds beginning with the cardinals who like to dine first thing in the morning and early evening. So here is my list for just one morning: Downey woodpecker

It is the Blue Jays that intrigued me. The jays are rarely around. I probably had only one or two sightings this summer. They must be lurking high in the trees, because the minute you put out peanuts (especially in the shell), they appear. These birds are so handsome, though some folks think they are a nuisance. I love seeing their brilliant blue with white and black markings show up at the feeders. We had three wrestle the peanuts and come back for more until they depleted the stash. Then, they disappeared again. These creatures entertain me. Their flight, picking the seeds, cracking the kernels, and then winging away are a source of wonder and enjoyment. From my window I can observe their eating habits: the mourning doves and juncos like to eat the millet on the ground, the blue jays like to carry their peanuts away and sometime as many as three or four stuffed in their beaks, the cardinals dine early and late, the sparrows and house finches gorge and rarely leave a feeder. On those below zero, bitter cold days, I could see the steam coming off the birds while they sat on the perches. Since I couldn’t give the birds any help with heating up the outdoors, I could offer them multiple feeding stations and a heated birdbath to get them through the extremes. They all have different habits and having a birdfeeder lets you become a home scientist− identifying and observing. Join in and feed the birds. You will also find hours of pleasure. *Just a note: Since my column editors house-sat for us, they understand now why I write about birds in my backyard. Our master bedroom has two ten-foot picture windows with feeders hanging in each one. Our guilty pleasure is lying in bed, drinking coffee, and watching the early morning bird feeding. They did too. IACS/Indy Parks Announce New Adoption Center Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) and Indy Parks and Recreation announced a new partnership that will bring a satellite adoption center to Broad Ripple Park. “Our team is so proud to welcome the Adoption Center to Broad Ripple Park,” said Linda Broadfoot, Indy Parks Director. “Partnerships are key to our parks delivering the best services in the right places. And, now, we are offering a convenient place for our park customers and neighbors to connect with the city’s Animal Care Services and explore adoption options.” The Indianapolis Animal Care Services Satellite Adoption Pavilion at Broad Ripple Park will have the ability to house both dogs and cats. The plan is to have it open during high-traffic periods at the park, and also during ACS’ busier times when the shelter tends to fill up quickly. “This adoption pavilion will give the thousands of animals that come through the shelter’s doors each year a fighting chance,” said Katie Trennepohl, ACS Director. “Tragically, some animals never get the chance to be adopted. This is one of many steps we are taking to ensure all animals at the shelter find new homes.” Designed by One 10 Studio, the building will also offer a shaded area for dog park users and will not decrease the size of the current dog park. Construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2018. Funding will come from a mix of both public and private sources, including the Friends of Indianapolis Animal Care Services Foundation. “This partnership is important for both the shelter animals and residents who are looking to adopt a new pet,” said Jason Larrison, BNS Director. “We anticipate being able to take this model and expand it to other parts of Marion County in the near future.” If interested in helping the shelter but unable to adopt, consider volunteering your time, fostering a cat or dog, or donating litter, canned pet food, cleaning supplies or any other item from the wish list. Monetary donations can be made online to the Friends Foundation or in person at the shelter, 2600 S. Harding Street. Shelter Adoption Hours are: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Wednesday: Closed. Shelter Intake Hours are: Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesday: Closed, and Thursday: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For additional information on IACS foster, adoption and volunteer programs, please visit www.indy.gov/acs.
