Everything you always wanted to know about the canal... By Alan Hague

Part Seventeen

The Downtown Canal (part 2) The Broad Ripple Gazette presented (in various issues from Volume 12 #18 through Volume 13 #9) the history and workings of the Indiana Central Canal as it exists today, from the canal’s creation at the dam on the White River in Broad Ripple, down to the Citizens White River Treatment Plant near the Fall Creek and 16th Street. This article is the second part that covers the portion of the canal that was past the water treatment plant. It currently runs from 11th Street, through downtown and White River State Park, spilling over into the White River near the southwest corner of the NCAA Hall of Champions. From issue #5 to start this installment: I had always believed that when the interstate was built downtown, the construction cut off the canal path. I had been told that the canal was piped underground at this point and then it re-emerged at 11th Street and flowed on the rest of the way to the White River in White River State Park. I thought the only changes were the construction of a concrete basin to replace the original earthen structure dug in the 1800s. I was wrong. During my interview with Citizens Energy, the owners of the active canal from Broad Ripple to the White River Treatment Plant, I learned that the canal, in fact, ends at the treatment plant, with all its 8-million gallons a day emptying into the facility, to be treated and delivered to the water users in the city. The real story of the water in the downtown canal was a more complicated one and I would find those details at the Department of Metropolitan Development. In 2016, I met with John Bartholomew, Public Information Officer for City of Indianapolis, Department of Metropolitan Development and Steve Schulmeyer, Project manager at City of Indianapolis, Department of Metropolitan Development, at their City-County Building office to discuss the history of the downtown Canal Walk project. Over the decades, the canal south of the White River Treatment Plant was mostly unused, except as a source of water power until 1969 for the Indianapolis Water Company’s (IWC) West Washington Pumping Station (now a preserved historic

Recycling seems to be back to normal at Broad Ripple Park.

5 BR Brewpub Quiz

Area residents have no doubt noticed the recycling woes at Broad Ripple Park lately. There was a day in January when your editor hauled his cardboard recycling to the park only to find a mountain of cardboard surrounding the bin. Rather then add to the problem, I hauled my cardboard back home. I called Kathy FitzGerald, Park Manager at Broad Ripple Park, to find out how the recycling program works at Broad Ripple Park. Kathy said that there are three types of recycling at the park (located on the north east corner, accessible from Evanston Avenue), newspapers, cardboard, and combined paper, plastics, glass and metals. The newspaper bins are serviced by Ray’s Trash and are emptied on Tuesdays and Fridays. The cardboard bins are serviced by Republic Services and are emptied every day, seven days a week. The combined recycling bins are serviced by the Solid Waste Department of the Department of Public Works (DPW) of the City of Indianapolis and are emptied every day. I was surprised to hear these claims of daily bin emptying. Since November I have found the bins either completely full, or overflowing, every time I have gone to recycle. Kathy said her contact at DPW lamented that November, December, and January are the toughest months of the year. Recycling is up and things can get out of control. For example, some operators are instructed to not empty a bin if trash, recycling, or other items are blocking the truck’s access. So far there is no solution to this problem. IndyParks, which is not responsible for emptying the bins, does not have the staff to clean up around the bins when problems arise. Kathy stated that she is not sure who cleaned up Cardboard Mountain earlier in January. Luckily it was cleaned and the bin emptying resumed. If DPW is correct, we will hopefully see things return to normal in February.

The Broad Ripple Gazette was invited for an evening of jazz at the Vanguard, 6319 N. Guilford Avenue [G5 on map]. Live jazz is now offered on Sunday evenings in the restaurant. As of press time, selections from Vanguard’s new menu are available on Devour Indy. This reporter enjoyed Vanguard’s amazing fried chicken while listening to a classic jazz set by Premium Blend. Many readers will remember this space as Usual Suspects (and long ago it was The Parthenon!), before it was transformed into The Vanguard about a year ago. Downstairs is the long-popular Casba club. Over the coming months, Vanguard will redo that space to create a new venue for music throughout the week. The Casba will be rebranded and the Gazette will bring that news to you as it unfolds.

The Indiana Repertory Theatre invited the Broad Ripple Gazette to opening night of a contemporary staging of William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the story of young lovers struggling to survive amid old hatreds. The vibrant and lively play speaks boldly across centuries to the divided world we live in today. The costumes are present day, the words are Shakespeare, with a slightly modern nod with a fresh energy. Romeo and Juliet runs through Sunday, March 4 at Indiana Repertory Theatre Upperstage, 140 W. Washington Street.

building in White River State Park). According to Now That Time Has Had Its Say [J. Darrell Bakken, 2002], the IWC sent a letter to the state highway commission in 1965 “informing it of the company’s intent to abandon the lower canal by early 1969”. This would make available the land needed to build a four-sided interstate loop with west and east legs. Negotiations fell through and the interstate was designed to only go around the east side of downtown, resulting in the current north-south split mess that Indy is still trying to remedy. In 1969 the State of Indiana only purchased two small pieces of the canal right-of-way for the Interstate 65 project, one near 36th Street for a canal/White River bridge, and the other for the exits around 12th Street. Before the Interstate was built in the early 1970s, the canal was moved underground to a pipe to carry the water (what was left after the roughly 8,000,000 gallons a day had been fed into the water treatment plant) from about 14th Street to 11th Street, where the canal picked up again. There was not much water in the downtown canal. It became a collector of trash and bottles. There was an idea to fix the poor condition of the canal to turn it into an asset.

A view of the canal looking north from North Street, from a report by the Department of the Interior 1985.

In 1972, a trust was established for the purpose of transferring ownership of the downtown portion of the Central Canal (starting at about 21st Street) from the IWC to the City of Indianapolis. The other portion of the canal (from the dam in Broad Ripple that creates the flow for the canal, down to the present-day end at the White River Treatment Plant at 16th Street), remains in the possession of Citizens Energy for use as the main conduit of water for the north side of Indianapolis. This 1972 agreement stated that the canal would be used to the benefit of the City of Indianapolis “for park and recreational purposes.” Another agreement stated that the City had until 1977 to act on the renovation of the downtown canal. The “twenty-two-person Waterways Task Force was created by the Greater Indianapolis Progress Committee” [Bakken, J. Darrell. Now That Time Has Had Its Say. 1st Books. 2002] was formed to study the project, thanks to a Lilly Endowment grant. The 1974 report was largely dismissed due to “high excavation, reconstruction, and redevelopment costs and because it threated to damage historic Military Park.” The Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana (HLFI) prepared a report in 1975 stating that canal redevelopments in other cities had positive economic impacts. The report called for the “development of the Lower Central Canal as an urban linear park”. It would later be called Canal Walk. In 1975, the Department of Metropolitan Development Historic Preservation Division proposed plans from New York Street to the White River (this is approximately the lower third of today’s downtown canal). In 1976 the IWC deeded the downtown portion of the canal to the City of Indianapolis. This was a 2.25 mile stretch. In 1986 the construction began with funding from the Urban Mass Transit Administration, Indianapolis Department of Transportation, the State Office Building Commission, the Lilly Endowment, and the Indianapolis Foundation. [Bakken, J. Darrell. Now That Time Has Had Its Say. 1st Books. 2002] The existing canal was drained south of Interstate 65. The canal bed was lowered 12 feet and the canal channel was lined with concrete to a uniform width of 50 feet. The exceptions were for basins at Ohio, New York, Walnut and 11th Streets. Pedestrian walkways were to be added to both sides. This first project, running from 1985 through 1991, cost $14,400,000. This seven-block section included the portion of the canal that ran from West Street, south of Ohio Street, north to St. Clair Street. end of CANAL part seventeen

Butler University expands with purchase of CTS Campus

Butler University just got a bit larger—40 acres larger. Butler has completed the purchase of 40 acres of property and buildings from Christian Theological Seminary (CTS), both schools announced on Wednesday, December 20, 2017. Butler’s College of Education (COE) will move into the main building on the CTS campus beginning with the 2018–2019 academic year. CTS will continue to reside on campus—in a part of the main building, counseling center, and apartments—through a special long-term lease. CTS will also retain ownership of a parcel of land on the far west side of the property on Michigan Road. Though Butler and CTS will continue to be independent, both say this collaboration is a major benefit. “This purchase supports the momentum of our current strategy and future vision, providing Butler with new physical space for growth as we seek to further enhance the University’s academic experience,” Butler President James Danko says. “This partnership offers many benefits and creates opportunity to explore how we can best serve the needs of CTS, Butler, and our broader communities.” Under the agreement, Butler plans to provide both campuses with services, such as grounds maintenance, the cost of which both schools will share. While COE will be the first to occupy the newly acquired space, Butler continues to explore ways to expand and enhance its innovative educational vision both on campus and in the community through the investment in the CTS space. Renovations to the main building on the CTS campus are set to begin after January 1 and will revolve around classrooms and faculty offices, as well as improvements to technology and accessibility. Butler and CTS have a history. In 1855, the two institutions were founded as a single entity, North Western Christian University. They separated formally in 1958 when Butler’s religion department split from the University and formed what would become today’s CTS. Since then, CTS and Butler have remained independent, but they have shared a rich and dynamic history of educating students to prepare them for rewarding and meaningful lives. Along the way, the two schools have collaborated academically, programmatically, and through shared services.

Why Do Humans Crave Music? Come Find Out

Humans’ obsession with music will be the topic when Wheaton College Associate Professor of Musicology Johann Buis, the main pre-concert lecturer for the Chicago Symphony and the first black member of the Cape Town Symphony Orchestra in the 1980s, delivers the annual Wayne Wentzel Lecture on Friday, February 16, at 7:00 PM in the Eidson-Duckwall Recital Hall. Admission is free and open to the public without tickets. Buis says humans need sound as much as they need air. His presentation examines why humans are obsessed with music and the psychological basis for music enjoyment. Buis was tenured in musicology both at the University of Georgia (1989–1997) and Wheaton College (2003–present). He holds degrees and diplomas from London University, Ball State University, the University of Cape Town, and the Orff Institute, Mozarteum University of Salzburg, the University of the Western Cape, among others. His scholarship ranges from performance history of early music to the aesthetics and reception history of black music between the United States and urban centers in Africa. He is co-author of Shout Because You’re Free! The Ring Shout Tradition in Coastal Georgia. The event also will feature student performances of works by African-American composers.

Governor Invites Female HS’ers to Join CyberStart Competition Governor Eric J. Holcomb is inviting female high school students to explore their interest in the computer science and technology field by joining the Girls Go CyberStart program. CyberStart is an online series of challenges that allow students to solve cybersecurity-related puzzles and explore exciting, relevant topics, such as cryptography and digital forensics. In 2017, the SANS Institute piloted CyberStart, a program designed to inspire the next generation of cybersecurity professionals while identifying talented youth. The 2017 state CyberStart program provided the opportunity for nearly 3,500 students in seven states to discover and demonstrate their aptitude for cybersecurity. Only five percent of the participating students were young women. As a result, SANS is launching Girls Go CyberStart in coordination with Cisco, a new program designed specifically for high school girls. Participating students do not need knowledge or experience in information technology or cybersecurity. All that is required is a computer and an internet connection. Girls may play alone or in teams of two to four. Those who participate have the opportunity to win computers and other technology-based prizes. The grand prize includes a trip, along with a parent, to the 2018 Women in CyberSecurity Conference. Additionally, the winning girls’ schools will receive a cash prize. Registration begins today at girlsgocyberstart.com and ends Feb. 16, 2018. The competition is limited to the first 10,000 female high school participants. Participants will play the game online from Feb. 20 through Feb. 25. Indiana is one of 17 states and territories participating in the Girls Go CyberStart program. Other participants include American Samoa, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Maine, Mississippi, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Texas, Vermont, West Virginia and Wyoming. More information, a description of the game and a sample challenge may be found on the Girls Go CyberStart website at girlsgocyberstart.com.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

They Might Be Giants Wednesday, February 7 The Vogue 6257 N. College Ave - 21+, doors 7 pm & show 8 pm, $25

The Vogue is celebrating their 40th anniversary this year. I’ve been going there (legally) for 35 of those years. I’m thrilled that they’re still going strong. I’m really looking forward to the They Might Be Giants show. I think this will be the fifth time I’ve seen them at The Vogue. In fact TMBG have been around for 36 years - almost as long as The Vogue. TMBG’s tagline is: Brooklyn’s Ambassadors of Love. Their music is full of silliness and fuzzy feelings and the promise of a good time.

-Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. Nora managed CATH Inc coffeehouse at 54th Street and College Avenue for seven years. During that time she hosted hundreds of local and touring musicians, both at the coffeehouse and her home. When CATH closed in 2004 and the music was no longer coming to her, she had to wander from her corner of Broad Ripple to see what is happening elsewhere. You can find her at Second Helpings during the work day, waitressing at the Red Key on Saturday nights and prowling Broad Ripple music venues the rest of the time. van america + Dog The following 2 poems were written on November 16, 2017. They are dedicated to Bill Emmert who taught me how much fun it is to travel America while selling art and poetry in a van with a dog.

a tribute to vanamerica people may say that america is not very beautiful but i say that america looks lovely from the shotgun seat of a van.

Icy Roads, Unplowed Sidewalks Plague The Village Did you drive on College Avenue on the morning of January 24? If yes, you may have assumed that ice trucks had salted the road. They hadn’t. DPW used a “private weather forecast” which erroneously predicted rain – not black ice and snow (unlike the WTHR and Weather Service which apparently called it accurately). To make matters worse, huge new potholes appeared in the section of road north Broad Ripple Avenue. Being from Wisconsin, I am constantly amazed at how poorly

Indianapolis handles winter weather. While DPW had 12 salt trucks out that morning for the entire city, INDOT said they had 60 (and does not rely on the forecast used by DPW). Also, can we suggest to Broad Ripple landlords to shovel their sidewalks? In Wisconsin, if you don’t the city will do it for you and send you a bill.

Riverwalk Planned Between Village And Br Park A new River Walk is in the planning stages between Broad Ripple Village (near McDonald’s) along the White River over to Broad Ripple Park (see above). Unlike the previous plan which would have been a board walk along the river,

this version will instead be at street level, according to organizer Brad Warnecke. The idea to link the Village and the Park has been around for 30 years. Now a new 26-member task force has formed to look into the idea. Organizers include Tom Healy, Bruce Buchanan, Brian Chandler, and others. They are talking with DPW, IndyParks, and the Nina Mason Pulliam Trust (which is promoting ROW-Reconnecting Our Waterways) as well as local landowners like McDonald’s. They are also having a landscape architect draw up a draft plan. I asked if this would be like the new Cultural Trail downtown. Warnecke said he doubted it due to the high cost of the Cultural Trail. The exact route has not been selected nor has a funding source been identified. The Broad Ripple Park itself is under a master plan review at the moment. The group has a newsletter with 50 subscribers. For more information or to participate in the project, contact Brad Warnecker at bradleyj.warnecke@gmail.com.] Escape to Mexico Having never been, I took my first trip to Mexico recently. Puerto Vallarta to be exact. The air fare from Indy is very reasonable (around $211 each way). I took American through Phoenix on the way down and Southwest on the way back through Houston. Hotels are a bargain as are meals, drinks, and everything else. PV itself is very safe although the cobblestone streets are a hazard (and charming). The Vallarta Botanical Garden is a must as is the Mercado streetscape full of vendors. Don’t miss the great restaurants with great fresh shrimp dishes for about $8. Your dollar goes far against the peso (18 to the dollar) and you can practice your Spanish. Be prepared for questioning on our President, especially from Canadian tourists. I finally started telling people I was from Calgary. The people of Mexico are warm and friendly. As the t-shirt said, “Relax, you are on the fun side of the Wall.” My only complaint—few places took credit cards and there were few bank ATMs. Upcoming Feb. 3 Meet Indianapolis Library CEO Jackie Nytes Glendale Branch, 3pm Feb. 18 Backyard Bird Count at Holliday Park, 1:30 pm Feb. 24 Sap to Syrup Day at Holliday Park Mar. 18 Hosta Program, Holliday Park Apr. 7 Wildflower Walk with Norma Wallman Apr. 21 McCormick’s Creek Trip by Holliday Park May. 19 Rafting Trip by Holliday Park ill Malcolm also writes a syndicated travel column and for All Aboard Indiana (both as hobbies). Sertoma Presents Prestigious Awards To Two Area Residents Fred Winters and Jay Abbott, both of Carmel, recently were honored by the Sertoma Club of Broad Ripple. Sertoma (SERvice TO MANkind) raises funds which are donated to various charities within the Indianapolis area. Mr. Winters was named the Sertoman of the Year for his outstanding contributions to the Club during this past year. Fred joined the club in 2006. He has served on the National Heritage Essay Contest committee, eventually became President of the Club, and then Chairman of the Board. Under his leadership, the club has been instrumental in finding new sources of funds for their fund-raising efforts, increasing membership, and enhancing the club’s strategic planning. Fred received an MBA from Indiana University. He served in the Air Force where he learned to be an interpreter of Russian. Fred worked at Eli Lilly and Company in the Human Resources Group for 34 years and eventually became a director in the company. Fred has been a strong supporter of the community and currently sits on the Board of Directors for Noble of Indiana. He has been active in three capital campaigns in his church and is a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Fund Raising Committee. Fred receives accolades from his wife, Jacquie, and his family as being

a loving husband, great dad and grandfather and a very caring individual. Mr. Jay Abbott was presented with the Service to Mankind Award. Jay is the Special Agent-in-Charge (SAC) of the FBI’s Indianapolis Division. Jay has been with the FBI for over 30 years and oversees 10 offices in Indiana, with over 300 employees. Although expressing a desire to play competitive tennis in his early years, he instead obtained his Judicial Doctorate at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He subsequently joined the FBI and held many leadership positions throughout the world. Mr. Abbott has always endeavored to lead by ‘building trust’ with all those with whom he interacts. This can sometimes be difficult in an organization as complex as the FBI. Jay has been assigned to a variety of Foreign Counterintelligence and International Terrorism matters and was also a member of the SWAT Team, a Firearms Instructor and a Tactical Instructor. Jay has received numerous awards and citations for his many accomplishments, including the Washington, D.C. Federal Bar Association Outstanding Law Enforcement Service Award, and is a member of the SAC’s Advisory Committee with advises the Director of the FBI. Jay will be retiring from the FBI at the end of January and is ready to devote time to his wife, Jackie, and family; a family that has sacrificed much for Jay to follow his FBI adventure.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the medium puzzle. We will try to put a 3 in the left section of the middle row that contains 2-4-5-6-9. The 3 in the center section eliminates the space to the right of the 2. The 3 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 9. The only place left is to the left of the 5. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Film historian Eric Grayson launches 2018 Vintage Movie Nights with 1934 film rich with Art Deco sets

Historic Ad This ad for the State Auto Parts appeared in 1958. The shop was at 911 Broad Ripple Avenue [H5 on map]. This is where Sushi Bar is today. The phone number starts out as CL. This was for numbers in the CLifford Indiana Bell exchange. C=2 L=5, so today it would just be 253-2747.

Film historian Eric Grayson begins the monthly Vintage Movie Nights at Garfield Park Arts Center on Saturday, January 27, at 7 p.m., with a 1934 independent feature released through Universal, I Can’t Escape, starring Onslow Stevens and Lila Lee. Vintage Movie Nights were named one of NUVO’s “150 Reasons to Love Living in Indy.” Grayson has been screening films rarely seen elsewhere for several years at the Garfield Park Arts Center. I Can’t Escape survives today, according to Grayson, because it was edited and reprinted as a half-hour television show. The version being shown at Garfield, however, is the complete version, one of the only prints in the world to survive. (The copy on archive.org was made from this print.) Handsome ex-con Steve Nichols (Stevens) is unable to get work during the Great Depression. Desperate for any income, he is taken in by some financial con artists who intend to use him to raise investment funds, steal the money, and leave him looking like the guilty party. I Can’t Escape is an engaging film with lovely Art Deco sets, added Grayson, one of the better independent products of the period. The remainder of the 2018 Vintage Movie Night selections are as follows: Feb 17: Singin’ in the Rain (1952) Mar 3: One Body Too Many (1944) Apr 28: The Pay-Off (1942) May 19: Mark of Zorro (1920) – live piano score June 9: It’s a Gift (1934) July: My Little Chickadee (1940) Aug 25: WC Fields Short Films (1930-33) Sep 29: Origins of Cinema Oct: Ghost of Frankenstein (1942) Nov 10: WWII Training films Dec 1: Laddie (1940)

Admission is $5; concessions $1. Free parking. For more information, visit www.gpacarts. org or call 317.327.7135. For more information on Grayson, visit www.drfilm.net/blog; his website, www.filmeric.com; and follow him on Facebook at www.drfilm.net/facebook.

The February calendar offers a few specific days to beat the winter blahs by focusing on food and drink. Hugel Pinot Gris is a tasty reason to not give up white wine this winter. Welsh cartoonist Ralph Steadman designed the fun loving label. He gained fame with his gonzo inspired illustrations for writer Hunter S. Thompson. You’ll find his free wheeling flair in books, album covers and on craft beer products from Flying Dog Brewery. Steadman’s unstuffy style for Hugel reflects the lip smacking Alsatian wine inside. No oak aging means pure, crisp flavors of tropical stone fruit. Chill it and swill it with Super Bowl snacks or Fat Tuesday gumbo. Bear Flag Zinfandel is another way to avoid taste bud hibernation. Full bodied, complex old vine Sonoma county grapes get a fruity spicy boost from Petite Sirah and Malbec. It’s jammy but it’s not. It’s toasty but it’s not. It’s, you guessed it, just right. Bear Flag refers to a month long “revolt” in 1846 when a gonzo group of Sonoma county settlers carrying a flag with a grizzly bear and a lone red star design, demanded separation from then Mexico controlled California. They settled their specific dispute with drinks not bullets. California became a state in 1850. The Bear Flag became its symbol in 1911. Jill A. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Score Big for the Super Bowl! It’s about that time. Football. Merriment. Super snacking. The best commercials of the year will air AND we’re all wondering if everyone will keep their shirts on during the half-time show. A-hem, Justin Timberlake. Yep, Super Bowl 2018 is upon us. Whether you like a big crowd or a smaller crew, I’ve got some great tips and excellent recipes to make your Super Bowl Sunday one for the record books. Make sure that you’ve got the basics assembled: beverages, snacks and plenty of comfy seating in view of your TV. You want some brewskis that are light enough to be enjoyed in succession without anyone “overdoing it”. Because I dig supporting all things local, I’m going to suggest “Natural Liberty” from Black Acre Brewing Co. in Irvington, Sun King’s “Cream Ale” and Metazoa Brewing’s “Walk in the Park” Hefeweizen. None of these will disappoint. Be sure to have some soft-drinks on hand, too. Brugge Brasserie was making some tasty sodas–might be fun to include some of that sugary goodness in lieu of the usual super-market suspects. On to the yummies. No football party would be complete without nacho cheese and below is the best I’ve had. This recipe was served throughout the eighties at the famed “44th Street Block Parties” in Meridian-Kessler. Credit to my mother, Ann Brunner for this treasure. Serve it with big bowls of tortilla chips.

Random Ripplings More than 40 Beatles fans gathered at the Glendale Branch of the Indianapolis Public Library for a talk in the series Come Together: Discuss the Beatles on January 27. Music scholar Aaron Krerowicz presented the musical evolution of The Beatles as influenced by Bob Dylan. Future Beatles topics at other branches are From the Shadows of JFK: The Rise of Beatlemania in America and The Beatles and the Rolling Stones.

Directions: Sauté onion and bacon until the onion is tender and the bacon begins to crisp. Stir in the remaining ingredients and heat over medium until bubbly. Be sure to stir constantly to avoid sticking. This is a wonderful thing to serve in a crockpot or warmer during the game! (Set to low or “warm”) I like to offer both blue and yellow tortilla chips, but just make sure there are plenty. Besides nachos, I will be offering mixed nuts, a tray of fresh veggies and fruit, a beautiful platter of slider buns and another crock pot filled with beef for guests to create Sloppy Joes. For dessert, a pile of Bourbon Brownies and a big bucket of Indiana Caramel Corn from the gals at Just Pop In!

My Favorite Sloppy-Joes 2 pounds lean ground beef 1 cup chopped onion ¼ cup chopped green pepper ½ cup ketchup 1 can condensed Chicken Gumbo soup 2 teaspoons Kosher salt ¼ teaspoon black pepper 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons butter Directions: Melt the butter in a large skillet and brown the beef. Push the beef to one side, and in the empty space, add onions and green peppers. Sauté until tender. Add the remaining ingredients and simmer 15-20 minutes. Mound this deliciousness into a second crockpot or warmer if you have one and set it to warm. Your guests will be able to enjoy nice hot sammies all evening. One of the most important strategies for entertaining is to have great food AND a great time. That means that you, the host, can actually enjoy your guests. If you set yourself up for success, it can really be a cinch. All these menu items can be made and/or purchased in advance. You can set out your plates, napkins and silverware. Fill the ice bucket. Turn on the warmers. Wipe off the counter and have a quick shower. When you are ready for company, ALL the work has been done and you can enjoy yourself without running around like a crazy person. Make your spread comfortable and welcoming, but gear it towards self-service. Most friends and family will appreciate being able to relax and be casual. Gamethemed or team-colored paper plates and napkins may inspire a little friendly competition (Go, Eagles!) and you can kiss the dirty dishes good-bye.

The following Bourbon Brownie “Life Hack” is my gift to you. These are so delicious and so easy. Ready? Here it is: Bake your favorite brownies. When you pull them out of the oven and they are still nice and hot, sprinkle 1 ounce of Bourbon over the top of them. The liquor will soak in immediately. Allow the brownies to cool completely as you normally would. Dust the pan with a generous layer of powdered sugar and cut the brownies into desired-sized pieces. That’s it. This trick works with brownies and virtually any booze or liqueur that might tickle your fancy. I’ve enjoyed Framboise (Raspberry), Grand Marnier (Orange), Amaretto (Almond), Nocello (Walnut) and Crème de Menthe. Let me know if you discover something wonderful that I’ve not thought of. I hope you’ll try these fun recipes and suggestions for a party that’s a breeze. Enjoy the game and time with your friends. As always, please let me know how you liked my recipes and shoot me a photo of your game day spread! Happy Super Bowl. Random Ripplings A public open house for the proposed IndyGo Red Line was held at The Vogue, 6259 N. College Avenue [H3 on map]. Many residents and business owners had access to Red Line staff to address concerns about construction and street reconfigurations. Construction schedules have slipped due to delays in the passage of Federal dollars that will help fund the project.
