“My background is 20 years of creating digital products, working with company founders and tech executives to help them with their ideas. My first role out of Purdue University was in software consulting, and I did programming for about a year. I have always been passionate about tech, but my passion is on the utility of tech. In other words, ‘Are we building the right thing?’ I moved to a small start-up company called Aprimo, which ended up having an exit value of half a billion dollars. As head of product design for one of Indy’s best success stories, I’ve always been passionate about bringing things to life,” he emphasized. Reynolds’ entrepreneurial vision began to flourish. “I always had the vision of starting a company and there was a tremendous market demand and opportunity. For four years now, our team has delivered product talent for over 80 Indianapolis tech companies. Tech products need to be well-built, but great digital design is what differentiates an idea. A company’s technology team focuses on product stability, while we partner with them to focus on a product that resonates with both users and buyers in the software world.” He mentioned their work with clients. “We focus on three audiences. For tech start-ups, we bring their product vision to life. For tech scale-ups, we take their existing idea to another level. For larger corporations, we think through how a digital play can complement their business. Our approach is always to figure out how products resonate with users. We’re primarily Indy-focused for now, with opportunity to expand in the future.” “When deciding on a name for Innovatemap, I wanted something simple. College Avenue is much more than a destination. “We originally chose Broad Ripple because it complemented our culture and client needs. From a logistical standpoint, Broad Ripple is central to everything - Fishers, Carmel, and downtown. The client services we offer are extremely collaborative, so the fact that we are centrally located in Broad Ripple provides the opportunity to host clients in our office. One nice benefit for the community is that when clients come to our office, there is a lot of additional daytime traffic to local Broad Ripple businesses, especially restaurants. If you consider our 19 team members and at least three or four groups of clients coming to Broad Ripple, each day, there’s a nice impact. We like to think of ourselves as great staple to the Village in terms of daytime traffic,” he noted. Innovatemap’s clients may come from different areas of Central Indiana, but they all share a passion for digital product. Our team does an excellent job of turning a vision into a product that is marketable, valuable, and usable,” Reynolds added. The Purdue University graduate and his staff are helping bridge the gap between technology and the consumer. In the July/August 2017 issue of Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s Bizvoice Magazine, he articulated, “Innovatemap is taking a different approach, one that helps companies create, design and market digital products by starting with users. They get to the heart of what people want – from the most basic tasks to needs and desires they may not even be aware of – before bringing these digital products to life. When that human element became overshadowed by technology, something got lost. To bring that element back, we should embrace the humanities. The humanities are a strength that can be forgotten. They’re about people and why we do (at Innovatemap) what we do. Engineers are good at asking, “Am I building the thing right?’ The humanities ask, “Am I building the right thing?’ He doesn’t suggest abandoning our drive to improve education in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), but that we strike a better balance between (STEM) and the humanities. Innovatemap has made this ideology part of their mission with their customers. As Mike reflected on the rewards of working in technology, he noted, “It is so rewarding to see the clients’ reactions when we successfully bring their idea to life. What was originally a vision in someone’s mind becomes a revenue-generating digital product that solves a problem for our clients’ customers. It is very rewarding to see our clients succeed and grow great companies here in Indianapolis. The Indiana Writers Center (IWC) will host a public discussion with the team of investigative journalists from The Indianapolis Star who uncovered decades of sexual abuse in a series, “Out of Balance” — reporting that ultimately led to the conviction Dr. Larry Nassar and the resignations of officials whose actions and inaction enabled the continued abuse of dozens of female athletes. Funded by a grant from the PEN America’s Press Freedom Incentive Fund, and in partnership with the Arthur M. Glick JCC, “In the Balance: Press Freedom & the Public Good in the USA Gymnastics Investigation,” will take place 7-9 p.m., March 22 at the Arthur M. Glick JCC, Laikin Auditorium, 6701 Hoover Road, Indianapolis. John Krull, chairman of Franklin College’s Journalism Department and host of the WFYI show, “No Limits,” will moderate the panel, featuring Mark Alesia, Tim Evans and Marisa Kwiatkowski, the Indianapolis Star journalists who investigated and wrote the stories about widespread sexual abuse in the USA Gymnastics organization. Other panelists include Steve Berta, editor for the series, Robert Scheer, visual journalist, and Gerry Lanosga, professor of journalism at Indiana University. The Star’s investigation began in 2016. It provided the first comprehensive look at the pervasiveness of the abuse in gymnastics, revealing that at least 368 gymnasts had alleged sexual abuse over the past 20 years. As a result of the team’s reporting, Nassar, former USA Gymnastics and Michigan State University doctor, will serve a minimum of 125 years in prison up to a maximum of 275 years, after more than 150 women and girls said in court that he sexually abused them over two decades. The series was among the top award winners in the 2016 Investigative Reporters & Editors (IRE) contest, which recognizes the best watchdog journalism of the year. Reverberations from the scandal continue. The entire leadership of Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics resigned, and institutions such as Michigan State University and the United States Olympic Committee have been accused of mishandling complaints. Flu Activity Remains Significantly High in Marion County

Flu activity is widespread across the county and remains at a significantly high level in Marion County. Everyone is strongly encouraged to take precautions that can prevent the spread of flu in the community. During the week of Jan. 28-Feb. 3, the percentage of visits to emergency departments in Marion County for influenza-like illness (ILI) was 4.5 percent. This is the highest ILI percentage since the 2014-2015 flu season. As of Feb. 9, Marion County reports 14 influenza-related deaths this flu season. Marion County Public Health Department director Virginia A. Caine, M.D., says it is impossible to predict if flu activity has reached its peak. Many more cases are expected to occur during what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is calling a “high severity season.” Dr. Caine says that increased flu activity is expected to last several more weeks. She is asking local businesses and schools to take this flu season seriously. “Sick employees and students need to remain home if experiencing flu-like symptoms with a fever,” says Dr. Caine. “Once a person is fever-free for 24 hours, they may return. Although this practice may be difficult, it could help decrease the spread of this virus in our community.” Other important preventable actions regarding flu include: Get a flu shot – it’s not too late; Avoid close contact with sick people; If sick, limit contact with others as much as possible; Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze; Wash hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub; Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs can spread this way; Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu. Also, as a precaution to protect patients and staff, temporary visitor restrictions remain in place at Marion County hospitals. Restrictions began on Jan. 8 at the request of Dr. Caine and include: No visitors with symptoms of influenza; No visitors under the age of 18; Visitors limited to immediate family as identified by the patient. Visitors are encouraged to check a hospital’s website or call in advance to learn more about restrictions at a specific location and any exceptions.

The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

I was reading through Edie Carey's impressive bio and started giggling when I read, "Carey has been singing at festivals, colleges, and listening rooms across the US, Canada and Europe since 1999, performing alongside Emmylou Harris, Lyle Lovett, Brandi Carlile, and Shawn Mullins, and has been a featured artist on NPR’s Mountain Stage." I can't believe they forgot to list CATH coffeehouse! Edie was one of my favorite musicians to play at the coffeehouse and sleep on my sofa. The warmth and grace and poetry of her songs are all reflections of herself. She was part of a group of New York City singer-songwriters that toured the country by car and were kind enough to make CATH coffeehouse a stop. I have fond memories of Edie singing her beautiful songs as I stood behind the pastry case. One of her shows coincided with the day that a longtime boyfriend unceremoniously photo by Ann Marsden ended our relationship. I kept it together (at least in my mind) long enough to make it through the show. Edie was kind enough that evening to sit on my sofa and hold my hand as I sobbed. Since those touring coffeehouses and sleeping on sofa days, Edie has found the audience she deserves. And you should go hear her.

One of the fun things (and there are many) about writing this column is that I occasionally get to hear a record before it is released to the public. I got to give Never Come Downs' first album Abyss a virtual spin in anticipation of their release show. The band; Mike Contreras (guitar, voice), Devin Kearns (guitar, voice), Monique Valah (bass), and Chris Cockrill (drums) formed in 2016 and after a few lineup changes have found their dream pop voice. The four musicians create a big sound with ethereal vocals swirling about. Bands Ward 6 and Stranger Attractor will also be playing. Black Circle Brewing is a small batch craft brewer. The Comedy of Moby Dick I have been watching Moby Dick on free TV and just Love it! It is a great story and so much fun to watch! Why fun you may say? It is such a dark, deep film. It has to do with growing up near Washington Square Mall on the once-great East Washington Street. During films, yelling at the screen was often what made the film fun. One time, a classmate of mine was going in to see a movie that I had just seen. He asked me what I thought of the film and I said, “The movie was terrible, but provided great opportunities to yell at the screen. I feel great! Like I just got out of 2 hours of therapy.” He said, “Alright!!” Moby Dick is hilarious to yell at. My favorite thing to yell is “Let it go, Ahab! It’s only a fish.” – or some variation thereof. Just hilarious! I would highly recommend yelling at this film! If you do, it would pay tribute to my teen years on East Washington Street. HAPPY YELLING

Library Rejects Moving Glendale Branch Into BRHS, Public Input Not Planned I attended the public meeting at the Glendale Branch Library with Indianapolis Public Library CEO Jackie Nytes on Saturday, February 3rd. Glendale Branch is leaving the Glendale Mall in 2022 when its lease is up. They already have approved funds to build a new building. (Until 2001, the Glendale Branch was located in Broad Ripple Park which is now a community center.) Surprisingly, the Library has already extensively reviewed many potential sites for the new Glendale Branch without any public input and, worse, appears on a verge of a decision which is focused more on parking spaces than what the community may want. An attendee asked at the meeting why they were not surveying the Glendale patrons to see what they want. Nytes said she didn’t want to have to disappoint them if the idea was too expensive or unworkable. Nytes said they have talked to IPS about moving into the Broad Ripple High School building which is being vacated after this school year. She said the site was too expensive, and “doesn’t work well” as it would be hard to serve clients to the east of Broad Ripple due to “traffic challenges” (in Broad Ripple). Nytes said the Library was not interested in adding to the “traffic woes” (of Broad Ripple). Broad Ripple High School is also too big for just the Library, she continued, so they would need a partner for other uses at the building (which would be too complicated). The Library has also looked at building on the empty parking lot behind Glendale Mall. While the site would work, the land was apparently too expensive. They also looked at the vacant Marsh Store (Keystone at 62nd Street) but the owner only wants to lease the building and the Library wants to buy it. Finally, she reported the Library is in talks with Washington Township Schools to take over the John Strange Elementary School on 62nd between Keystone and Allisonville. I commented that not every trip to the Library should have to be in a car. You should be able to take transit, walk, or bike to the Library. (Indeed you can visit them on-line now.) I asked why the Library did not want to “go local” and integrate the Library into the fabric of the community and the neighborhoods. (With a library back in the Village, you would have increased pedestrian traffic and could weave a visit to the Library into other activities in the Village.) Nytes said they didn’t have the funds to be in every neighborhood and that such an approach would be fine for Broad Ripple only. (They want the new Glendale Branch to reach neighborhoods further east.) I asked why not have several smaller libraries rather than using a COSTCO approach (i.e. a mega Library which is everything to everybody and has lots of stuff including parking). I have alerted Broad Ripple Village Association to this development. The Library needs to survey Glendale patrons and use this as a time to see what people want and what works best as well as have several public hearings. Having the Library back in Broad Ripple would add diversity and walkability to our community and would help the Library be more relevant as well – especially to Millennials who, one meeting attendee noted, never use the Library. Nytes’ car-centric approach needs a vision update to reflect that the growing Indy neighborhoods (Fountain Square, Downtown, and Broad Ripple) are walkable, livable communities that do not rely on the automobile or four lane streets. New Master Plan Coming For Broad Ripple Park IndyParks is doing a new master plan for Broad Ripple Park. Comments from Indianapolis Public Library CEO Your editor followed up with Jackie Nytes to get a direct quote about public input on the Glendale branch relocation: Thank you for checking this detail…I recall [Bill], he was at my Dear CEO Love Your Library Tour stop at the current Glendale Library location last Saturday. He is a passionate believer in having a strong and bright future for the Broad Ripple Village and that is what it will take to strengthen the area. We had a good talk about walkability and somewhat sadly I had to provide a reality check about how many libraries we can afford across the city. I do want to clarify ... my statement [to Bill]…while we do not anticipate “having a public meeting” to find a location where we can relocate the current library, we are certainly gathering plenty of public input along the way. I have met with IPS about their high school building, and with both the Mind Trust and a potential developer with ideas for the re-use of that building. We have identified a series of sites within 2 miles of our current site and had our broker obtain information on each of them including the former Marsh store site; we have met with the owners of the Mall who own other land in the area, and we have met with some other property owners including the leadership of the Washington Township Schools. In every instance we are considering location, accessibility, proximity to our other library locations, availability (timing), and cost. We hope to conclude this analysis this spring and be able to announce a location at that time. The Library will not be started until 2020 however when we will be able to sell the bonds for its construction. Everything you always wanted to know about the canal... By Alan Hague

Several vehicular bridges that crossed the canal were replaced during these years. Those bridge projects were under the Department of Transportation and were not part of the canal project. The bridges included Ohio, New York, Indiana/ Michigan, North, St. Clair, 10th and 11th Streets. The canal project included new pedestrian bridges at Vermont and Walnut Streets, where vehicular bridges existed before. The vehicular bridge at 9th Street was planned to be replaced with a pedestrian bridge, but was simply removed around 2000 when the north section of the Canal Walk was built. Phase one of the project, started in 1985, was to move the canal into an underground 54-inch pipe from the West Street Bridge to the White River. This pipe provided a temporary overflow for the downtown canal system. In 1986, phase two lowered the canal from West Street to New York Street and built the Ohio Street basin and fountain. This is the area where the canal is supplied with water. As I mentioned in a previous installment, I had always thought that the downtown canal was an extension of the Broad Ripple canal. I had heard that the water flowed south from Broad Ripple, went underground at the Interstate, then re-emerged at 11th Street. In fact, the downtown canal is more like a pond. It is a non-flowing, contained structure fed by two main water sources – the AUL Tower (now One America) and the Indiana State Office Building. The AUL water is from the ground water pressure from the hole dug for the underground parking. The State Office Building outputs the used geothermal water into the canal. The relatively warm temperatures of these waters are why the Ohio basin does not freeze in the winter. The waterfall feature on the north end of the canal by Buggs Temple, fed by pumping ground water into the canal, keeps the water moving in the summer months so it doesn’t become stagnant.

The Downtown Canal (part 3) The Broad Ripple Gazette presented (in various issues from Volume 12 #18 through Volume 13 #9) the history and workings of the Indiana Central Canal as it exists today, from the canal’s creation at the dam on the White River in Broad Ripple, down to the Citizens White River Treatment Plant near the Fall Creek and 16th Street. This article is the third part that covers the portion of the canal that was past the water treatment plant. It currently runs from 11th Street, through downtown and White River State Park, “spilling over” into the White River near the southwest corner of the NCAA Hall of Champions. From part 2 to start this installment: In 1976 the IWC deeded the downtown portion of the canal to the City of Indianapolis. This was a 2.25 mile stretch. In 1986 the construction began with funding from the Urban Mass Transit Administration, Indianapolis Department of Transportation, the State Office Building Commission, the Lilly Endowment, and the Indianapolis Foundation. [Bakken, J. Darrell. Now That Time Has Had Its Say. 1st Books. 2002] The existing canal was drained south of Interstate 65. The canal bed was lowered 12 feet and the canal channel was lined with concrete to a uniform width of 50 feet. The exceptions were for basins at Ohio, New York, Walnut and 11th Streets. Pedestrian walkways were to be added to both sides. This first project, running from 1985 through 1991, cost $14,400,000. This seven-block section included the portion of the canal that ran from West Street, south of Ohio Street, north to St. Clair Street.

That feature typically only runs April through October, because it would freeze in the winter. Phase three took the canal north past Michigan Street. The Chinese New Year starts February 16th. It’s the year of the dog. Great news for most of Broad Ripple as we are truly a canine loving community. Brian Wheat who owns Village Recording Studio (www.villagerecording.com) recently talked with me on his podcast about the popularity of dogs in the village. With the Monon Trail, the bark park, pet focused businesses and dog friendly eateries, it’s good to be Rover in the Ripple. I met most of my neighbors who are now dear friends while walking my own two dogs in the hood. My boys were named for beer. Guinness and Harp. They were black and tan mutts adopted from the Humane Society on St Patricks Day 1998. Their true “boof day” was in February so had they not crossed the rainbow bridge (Guinness in 2006, Harp in 2013) they would now be 20 in human years and 140 in dog time. Guinness and Harp had their own column in the Gazette, called “Better Than a Biscuit” in which they highlighted things that were tastier than treats. I think they would include Dark Horse Double Down Wine if they were still clicking the keyboards with their nose worthy notes. Like an unconditional love giving mutt, it’s a blend of familiar and unfamiliar wine grapes that come together and bring satisfying smooth flavors of spicy red fruit. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter Do Kindness, It’s Free February is the month of love. Valentine’s Day dominates the first half of the month with bouquets of hearts and roses. I am not presumptuous enough to think our village will embrace this lovey-dovey season, but I think we can wish that a bit rubs off. With little retail to remind us of these emotions and a dominance of bars and restaurants, I challenge the residents and the business people of the village to spend some time thinking about the true meaning of love and kindness. My dream is a village of warmth and friendliness in addition to fun and drinking. Hospitality embraces kindness and service, or at least it should. It is a requirement for those folks who are working in the service industries − but what about the residents and the visitors? I always think of a village as a small community where everyone knows each other, holds others accountable, helps one another, and has a welcoming greeting for everyone on their streets. But alas, many of us are products of the 2000’s where social media and lack of manners is more the practice. I challenge anyone reading my article to think and practice kindness this month. Kindness takes little time and costs nothing. So how can you do a kindness workout? • Practice patience. Take a breath, hesitate a moment, and turn your kindnessswitch on. • Say a warm “Hello, have a nice day” or “Good Morning”. Take time to say “Thank you”, and don’t ignore a “Please.” • Do a good deed: help someone with directions, answer a village question, open a door, pick up a dropped item, share a load of packages, and let someone with one item go in front of you. You will never know how a simple kindness can sow the seeds of care and goodwill. I still remember the man who was walking towards me in a carved-out snowy path during the Chicago blizzard. As we got closer, each one of us was probably thinking who would give the right-of-way. Picture the snow was several feet tall. To my delight, the “gentleman” stepped in the snow drift and even tipped his hat at me as I passed. I have never forgotten that quaint manner, and even fifty years later, it is a vivid memory. Here are some words of inspiration: “Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you, not because they are nice, but because you are.” Unknown “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.” Aesop (620 and 564 BC) “Kindness is more than deeds. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is anything that lifts another person.” Plato (424-348 BC) Kindness does not go out of style; it is a human characteristic that has been with us since the beginning of time. Manners may change, but kindness is eternal. Kindness fuels our Hoosier hospitality and ripples through our village. Give it a try. The Rusty Nail Society, founded in 2016, is a men’s group that meets at 2:00 PM every Wednesday in Broad Ripple at Plump’s Last Shot. The group uses its weekly dues to help the needy. Last year they sent money to Hurricane Relief through a “guess the weight of the pumpkin” contest. For the second year in a row, they held a food drive for the Northside Baptist Church food pantry, (the Society’s chosen annual charity), that serves 6 zip codes in Indianapolis.
