The Vogue Theater A Historic Look Back - Part 1 by Alan Hague
The Vogue has been a Broad Ripple landmark since Carl Niesse opened it as a premier movie house, on June 18, 1938. Film stars Mary Pickford and Buddy Rogers suggested the name “Vogue” to Niesse while they were visiting Indianapolis. Pictured below (on page 11) is Carl Niesse (looking at the camera) with his crew as they reviewed courtesy of The Vogue the plans Cowboy movie star and friend of Carl, Ken Maynard, laid the cornerstone during the for the Vogue. construction of the 800seat theater. The contractor for the $65,000 job was William E. Mick. Architect Edwin Kopf made sketches of the facade designs. Prior to the courtesy of The Vogue construction, two houses had occupied the space An early sketch of a proposal for on the east side of College Avenue just south of the theater’s neon marquee.
The first of four public open houses for the development of a master plan for Broad Ripple Park was held at Broad Ripple High School on March 7th. About a dozen IndyPark staffers were there, including Linda Broadfoot (IndyParks Director), Beth Crouch (past BR Park manager and current IndyParks COO), Don Colvin (Deputy Director of Indy Parks), and Kathy Fitzgerald (current manager of BR Park). This was primarily an information gathering meeting to find out how residents want to use the park. There were displays showing park data, such as exisiting tree canopies, flood areas, utilities, walking distances to the park, and many more. The remaining open houses are scheduled for April 4, May 2, and May 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Broad Ripple High School cafeteria. More info at: www.broadrippleparkmasterplan.com

The background of The Gazette:
I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRMHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRMHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Have you ever thought about the beauty and potential that Jesus Christ sees in you? In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus said: “You are the salt of the earth.” and “You are the light of the world - like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see.” Here is a poem on that topic:
Another Funky Sermon Don’t worship me. Be my brother & my sister & my mother & my father. Watch me groove. I’m groovin’ at a level That heals people. When I was born 3 came from Far away Because they saw My star. You have A star 2Just as bright And As bold As mine. We come from The SAME SOURCE. And when U Really Figure Out How to Get The Groove Even I Will Weep. C.W. Pruitt II December 31, 1999 CW Pruitt II has been on the poetry scene in Broad Ripple for years. Spring Has Sprung In The Ripple The snow drops are already gone and the hepatica are out (or soon will be) at Hepatica Hill in Holliday Park. It’s spring and that means spring wildflowers. Don’t miss Norma Wallman’s spring wildflower walk at 10 a.m. on April 7 at Holliday Park (registration required). Norma told us about what wildflowers we might find: spring beauties, trout lilies (white and yellow), cut-leaf toothwort, hepatica, Dutchman’s breeches, squirrel corn, and many more. To get a sneak preview of what might be in bloom (in April and throughout the year), view “The Blooming of the Seasons” on YouTube. If you are nice, she will point out where to find the very rare shooting star plus the three types of trilliums. Her book, Wildflowers of Holliday Park, can be purchased at the following locations: Holliday Park Nature Center, Kids Ink Children’s Bookstore, Wild Birds Unlimited at Clearwater Crossing, Basile History Market at the Indiana State Library, the Indiana State Library and photo by Norma Wallman Historical Bureau, and IndyReads on Mass Ave.

Best Pothole Award And the winner is—the crater in front of McDonald’s on Broad Ripple Avenue. I’ve driven over and in it during the last three weeks. The best part—you can see all the way down to the brick street that was the Avenue back in the day. Score One For Liquor, Zero For Transit It really is an embarrassment to live here. While our state legislators finally repealed the Sunday ban on alcohol sales (after decades of debate), they could not bring themselves to repeal the ban on light rail transit. (Yes, we are the only state to have such a ban. Worse, no light rail is planned by anyone anywhere in the state, although it should be.) But they found time to debate the matter which looked like a sure thing since it

If not, mark your calendar for the Spring Sale at their Greenhouse. It runs from April 30 to May 2. Let’s Celebrate A Birthday: Are You Up For Amazing? Illinois is turning 200 and it’s time to celebrate with a trip to the Land of Lincoln. I took Southwest to Chicago’s Midway airport (and took the Orange Line to the Brown Line) to my hotel, Hotel Versey (644 W. Diversey Parkway) in the trendy LakeView East neighborhood (think Broad Ripple on steroids). I enjoyed the amazing architecture (both old and new) in the Windy City. Then I took the Amtrak train to Springfield (6 trains a day that go up to 109 miles an hour, tickets at www.Amtrak.com from $17). I explored the Abe Lincoln Home National Site. It’s the actual village where Lincoln lived, complete with National Park Visitor Center. Then it was back on Amtrak to Normal (home of Illinois State University and the cute Uptown neighborhood (also like the Ripple) where I caught the Amtrak Thruway bus back to Indy. And don’t miss Starved Rock State Park if you are ever in the central Illinois area. Plan your trip using these great websites: www.enoyIllinois.org, www. nps.gov/liho, VisitSpringfieldIllinois.com, www.Illinois200.com, and www. IL200Springfield.org. 63rd Street. Before opening the Vogue, Carl spent most of his life in show business. His varied career included working in a carnival, performing in plays, ushering, performing in vaudeville, and writing for vaudeville. He managed three local theaters: the Ambassador, The Alamo, and the Cosy, under the name Central City Amusements. In the late thirties he decided to open a theater of his own. The June 17, 1938, Indianapolis Times reported, “Mr. Niesse’s new picture house has an ample parking lot in the rear. It also has a lemon-and-lime courtesy of The Vogue colored facade and marquee; a circular lobby done Carl Niesse at the construction site of the Vogue. in graduated color shades; indirect panel lights to guide the patron to one of 800 comfortable seats; and a cooling system which could reverse the song title of ‘June in January’ if it wanted to.” Another paper’s description the facade was the following: “The striking front is of antique cream and wine terra-cotta, graced with an ultra-type marquee and attractive sign illuminated in power green and amber neon”. In the lobby there were two large displays of telegrams from many Hollywood movie stars such as Claudette Colbert, Norma Shearer, Tyrone Power, and Robert Taylor. The Ritz Brothers, a comedy team of three brothers that starred in over a dozen films, sent a telegram to Niesse joking that they would be available as ushers for the Vogue if there were any job openings. The feature film for the opening was “College Swing” featuring Martha Raye, Burns & Allen, Bob Hope, Edward Everett Horton, Betty Grable, and Jackie Coogan. Tickets were 25¢ for adults and 15¢ for children. The Vogue Variety Hour and short subjects were also on the program. Olsen and Johnson, a comedy team booked at the Lyric Theater downtown, were in line to be the first patrons to buy tickets at the Vogue opening. To add to the opening night fun, they tried to buy one adult and one child admission, but got “caught”. Carl Niesse then put the team to work in courtesy of The Vogue the box office to sell The lobby with graduated color shaded walls premiere tickets.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the middle section of the top row that contains 2-3-4-7-9. The 5 in the left section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 7. The 5 in the center section eliminates the spaces below the 3. The only place left is directly below the 9. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The recent change in state law to allow Sunday Retail Alcohol sales got me thinking about the Indiana wineries again. They have been able to sell their product on Sundays since 1971. That’s when a small group of wine policy pioneers, including Bill Oliver Sr. and Jack and Joan Easley, helped create and pass the Indiana Small Winery Act. Among other things it made it possible for wineries to be open for tasting and sales on Sundays. Smart. Their families continue to produce and sell award winning, tasty wines today. About that same time in the Columbia Valley region of Washington state, Don and Linda Mercer expanded their multi generational family business of ranching and farming. In addition to sheep, cattle and wheat, they created an irrigation system and planted wine grapes in the Horse Heaven Hills. Smart. The wines of Mercer Estates have that rich, opulent, old world structure with an energetic fruit forward New World taste. The Sharp Sisters Red Blend 2015 is a great example. It’s named for Carma Sharp Mercer and her five sisters, who were some of the first settlers in that region in the 1800’s. The wine opens with heady aromas of blackberry, and patchouli. The mouthfeel is lush. Flavors of ripe juicy blackberries and mulberry and plum envelop and lusciously linger on the palate. The blend is an homage to wine grape history – Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Grenache and Carignane. The grape-to-bottle method is thoroughly modern. Grapes are fermented whole in stainless steel tanks, keeping the flavors fresh and recognizable. Aging in both American and French Oak barrels adds that smoothing touch for tannins that could be a little rough and rustic, but instead become silky and supple. Everything old is new again in this easy drinking dry red, that can now be enjoyed any day of the week. Jill A. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter A Good Time for Science In March we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, the Ides of March, Daylight Savings Time change (March 11 at 2am), and sometimes Easter. There is one more day to celebrate that calls for a science lesson to learn something you may never have pondered. It is the Spring Equinox. What is an equinox? This is a date that represents the day when the sun crosses the celestial equator. It is the day when the day and night are of equal length. I totally look forward to the Vernal Equinox (or our spring event) because of the anticipated change of seasons and my plants and trees will awaken soon. The equinoxes are ancient. The early Romans marked them on their calendar. The Julian calendar (decreed by Julius Caesar in 45 BC) noted the spring and autumn celestial events. But in AD 325, the Gregorian calendar (our modern one) was established and the creators wanted the Vernal Equinox to reflect Easter. So spring equinox is not a fixed date; it can vary from March 19 through the 21st. This spring date differs in order to accommodate leap year. This year, we can celebrate the Vernal Equinox on March 20. Remember the above description of the Vernal and Autumnal Equinoxes applies to us in the Northern Hemisphere only. Residents in the southern hemisphere have the reversed seasonal effects in areas south of the equator. But again, it is the time when the sun spends equal amounts of time above and below the horizon at every location on Earth. The time of daylight also differs depending on how far you are away from the equator. At the north and south poles, the equinoxes mark the change from 24 hours of darkness to 24 hours of daylight. I dug a little deeper into the science of darkness and daylight; I wondered how the equinoxes were different from the solstices. The quickest resource was Wikipedia: “An equinox represents a day with equal duration of day and night (Mar 21 and September 23), and thus we have a spring and a fall equinox. And solstice refers to a day with either the longest day (June 21, also called summer solstice) or shortest day (Dec 21, also referred to as winter solstice).” People will celebrate the solstices by gathering at traditional sites like Newgrange in Ireland, Stonehenge in England, or Times Square in New York City. They will also be making special foods, celebrating the sun and entwining religion, culture, and legends−all being a joy-filled time. Look at this information as a real inspiration. You have 4 more days you can call holidays. You can wish your friends Happy Vernal Equinox, Season’s Greetings on this Autumnal Equinox, Enjoy your Summer Solstice, So Sorry I missed seeing you at Winter Solstice. I am sure many of you could make up some fun and memorable cards for these events and give each receiver a bit a science too. In addition to Beware of the Ides of March and Erin Go Bragh, I wish you a warm and beautiful Vernal Equinox. May you enjoy the sunshine, the nesting birds, and budding flowers and trees. Just a few more games of darts..... After 36 years at the corner of Westfield Boulevard and Guilford Avenue, The Wellington Bar and the Corner Wine Bar restaurant closed on March 7th. The new owner will remodel the neighborhood favorite. It is expected to reopen under a new name in a few weeks.
