mario@broadripplegazette.com “Podcasts have reawakened people to the joys of storytelling” says Brian Wheat, owner of the Village Recording Studio in Broad Ripple. “That is what I want to do with the Broad Ripple Village Podcast.” Launched in February 2018, the podcast features residents and business owners who live and work in Broad Ripple and surrounding areas. “There are wonderful and interesting people here who have stories to tell”, Wheat adds. In the ongoing podcast series, longtime residents tell stories about days gone by, business owners tell stories about starting and running their business here, and newer residents tell stories about what happened to them just yesterday. “I want to help keep the ‘Village’ aspect of Broad Ripple alive through storytelling” says Wheat. The first five episodes feature Alan Hague - owner and operator of the Broad Ripple Gazette; Jill Ditmire - resident and host of Curious Mix on local PBS station WFYI; Jessie Davis and Blake Roberson - managers of the Runners Forum and hosts of Running On Indy podcast; Dave Schnieders - resident and retired teacher for the Indiana School for the Blind; and Debra and Chuck Hasbrook - residents, owners and operators of Hotel Broad Ripple (see photo). courtesy of The Vogue

As the host, Wheat’s approach to the podcast is very conversational and easygoing. “I think the best podcasts are unscripted where the listener feels like they are over-hearing an interesting conversation between people at a party or get together.” Says Wheat. “There really is no preparation required on the part of the guests - they show up and talk about things they already know about”. Village Recording Studio is set up in such a way that guests do not have to wear headphones or worry about speaking directly into a microphone. “People literally sit around a coffee table and have a conversation” says Wheat. “This does a lot to make people comfortable and ready to talk”. This is not to say Wheat wasn’t a little nervous about his first recording. “I had doubts in my abilities before I started,” says Wheat. “But I quickly realized that if you can have a conversation with someone, you can do a podcast.” And like many people, Wheat did not like hearing his own voice in the recording - but that faded quickly as well. “Everyone’s voice is unique, and so I just accepted mine for what it is.” In future episodes, news-oriented stories are planned such as the recent rescues of kayakers caught in turbulence of White River. Wheat also plans to add music and spoken word poetry to the mix. “Storytelling comes in many forms and I want the podcast to be both entertaining as well as informative,” says Wheat. Wheat wants to give others the opportunity to start their own podcast – it was always part of the plan when Wheat opened Village Recording Studio located in the heart of Broad Ripple in the spring of 2017. “At its most basic level, Village Recording is a storytelling studio,” says Wheat. “It is here for songwriters, musicians, authors and poets, as well as individuals, families and businesses to record stories that entertain and/or inform listeners.” Wheat says families come to his studio to capture stories that can be passed along to current and future generations. “Hearing your great grandmother’s voice tell stories of her life is a deeply moving experience,” says Wheat. “The studio was designed to capture all of the characteristics and nuances that make a person’s voice unique and special.” Local businesses use his studio to engage with their customers on a regular basis with podcasts. “Business owners have deep passion and knowledge about the subject matter of their business, whether it is music, brewing beer, outdoor adventure, exercise, or beauty,” says Wheat. “Using their own voice to share this knowledge with their customer base is a very effective way to keep customers coming in the door. Plus, the audio format is much less expensive to produce and just as effective, if not more, as other means of communication.” Because of its many enjoyable attributes and popularity among young adults, Wheat thinks podcasting is here to stay. “We are entering the second golden age of audio. The first started with radio broadcasting in the 1920s where people gathered around the radio console and listened to a very limited number of programs,” says Wheat. “Today, people have access to an unlimited number of podcasts on every subject imaginable and can listen where ever they might be or whatever they might be doing–driving to work, riding a bike, walking the dog or even at home gathered around their Amazon Echo smart speaker.” Broad Ripple Village Podcast is available on iTunes, Google Play, TuneIn, Soundcloud, and Stitcher. Recap: In part one, Carl Niesse opens the Vogue Movie Theater at 63rd and College Avenue in 1938. Niesse tried a new idea. He eliminated the double feature and showed a new concept instead: “Short Subjects”. Until that time theaters regularly showed double features, and one of the films was usually considered “filler”. Although many patrons did not like the double feature, surveys showed that women liked two movies for one price because they thought it was a bargain. Movie studios agreed with the concept of the short subject, which allowed them to produce fewer and better full-length movies. Here is what the newspaper had to say about Carl’s idea: “Mr. Niesse is introducing a novel courtesy of The Vogue note, for these Stylish ushers in front of a poster advertising the Vogue Variety times, into his Hour, shown with each feature film. program. He isn’t cutting it brief with a solo feature, but simply substituting a carefully selected group of short subjects under the title of The Vogue Variety Hour, for the much-abused second attraction. The current bill, for instance, includes an Audioscopics (the pictures jump out at you), Pete Smith’s How to Train a Dog, one of the Crime Doesn’t Pay series, a cartoon, a fashion subject, a musical comedy brevity and a full newsreel–62 minutes of interesting this and that in addition to College Swing. First Congregational United Church of Christ Calls New Senior Minister

In a unanimous vote in January, the congregation of First Congregational Church Indianapolis made history by calling the Rev. Dr. Sarah Griffith Lund as its senior minister – making her the first woman to lead the church in its 161-year history. Lund began her ministry with the congregation on March 1. “For our first year together,” said Lund, “we will focus on building trusting and life-giving relationships with each other, the neighborhood and wider community!” Ordained with standing in both the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ, Lund served since 2014 as vice president for seminary advancement at Christian Theological Seminary. Prior to that appointment she worked with nearly fifty congregations in Florida to strengthen their vitality, and as a congregational pastor responsible for preaching, teaching, presiding over the sacraments, providing pastoral care, and community ministry. A proliferate speaker and writer about mental health, Lund is the author of the widely regarded book “Blessed are the Crazy: Breaking the Silence About Mental Illness, Family and Church.” She blogs at www.sarahgriffithlund.com and is an active board member of the Martin Luther King Community Center in Indianapolis. Lund’s formal education includes a bachelor of arts in religion from Trinity University, a master of divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, a master of social work from Rutgers University, and a doctor of ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago. She also completed the certificate in fundraising management from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University. Lund received the prestigious Engle Award in Preaching from Princeton Theological Seminary. Lund’s first Sunday in the pulpit was March 4. IMPD has created E-Commerce Exchange Zones

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has created an “E-Commerce Exchange Zone” at each district headquarters and encourages community members to use the front parking lots or lobby (if available) when meeting people to complete their online purchases and transactions. As more people conduct private business transactions online, there has been a nationwide increase in crime with respect to these transactions. Therefore, IMPD is taking a proactive approach to deter crime by creating an Online Purchase Safe Zone, or “E-Commerce Zone.” In an attempt to reduce the likelihood of citizens falling victim to scams or more serious crimes; IMPD has designated the front parking lot or lobby (if available) as the Online Purchase Safety Zone. These areas are under 24-hour video surveillance. Citizens who are conducting private business transactions by answering newspaper advertisements, or through online retailers such as E-Bay, Craigslist, OfferUp, Facebook etc. can finalize their business transactions in a safe place. While law enforcement officials will not be involved in verification, monitoring or facilitating the private transactions, this program is designed to provide a known, well-lit and secure location to conduct business. Citizens can request the other person to meet at this E-Commerce Zone, but if the other party declines, then chances are it is a sign of “buyer beware.” The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is not reacting to any one specific incident, but rather

taking a pro-active approach to provide a location where the citizens can feel safe meeting an unknown individual to conduct their private transaction. “E-Commerce Exchange Zones” are available at the following police districts: • North District Headquarters - 3120 E. 30th Street. The background of The Gazette:

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Bill Earle pulled this snapping turtle out of the Broad Ripple swamp. by Paul Walker

This photo, taken at 6560 Ferguson in 1936, shows 13-year-old Bill Earle, holding a 13 inch snapping turtle by the tail. He stated that it came out of the Broad Ripple pond [once located around 66th and Ferguson] and estimated that it weighed 25 pounds. It was so heavy that he told the photographer to hurry! A friend told him to be careful of the thing, or else! To demonstrate, he held the handle of a steel wrench close to the creature’s head. In a flash the turtle’s head came out of the shell and “SNAP!” onto the steel handle. One wonders if turtles have teeth, and if so, how many did it have left!! What happened to the turtle? Bill said he just let it go. Editor’s note: The structure behind Bill, to the right of his head, was recently torn down on Cornell. We think it was a chicken coop. Park 66 Apartments is now on that site. Also, Bill Earle was featured in the Broad Ripple Gazette three-part series Rippleite of Distinction in October 2004.

City May Outsource Pool Operation? At the recent IndyParks meeting on the master plan for Broad Ripple Park, a consultant for the City told me that the City was considering outsourcing pool operations to an organization like the YMCA or a hospital group. Note that the next IndyParks Broad Ripple Park master plan development public meeting will be held on April 4 followed by May 2 and May 23. All meetings are held at the Broad Ripple High School and start at 6 p.m.

City-County Councilor new BRVA Executive Director The Broad Ripple Village Association has picked City-County Councilor Colleen Fanning as its new Executive Director. She starts on April 1. The Association will have its spring meeting on Tuesday, April 17, at 6 p.m. at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Updates on the community, the BR Park Master Plan, and a presentation from IMPD are scheduled. Trout Lilies And Other Flowers Out At Marott Park Marott Park, just south of 75th and College, features a great display of spring wildflowers including the trout lilies (see right). You will find them at the top of the hill. Holliday Park Wildflower Walk Set for April 7 Don’t miss the annual “Wildflowers with Norma” wildflower walk at 10 a.m. on April 7. You can also rent a bike easily using the B-Cycle or the new Lime Bikes and their equivalents which don’t rely on docking stations. The Know Justice, Know Peace exhibit on the complexities of urban policing is a must. Have lunch or a snack at the 7th Street Public Market next door. Next hop on the new extended CATS Blue Line Light Rail for a 20-minute ride north to the University of North Carolina Charlotte. Must see while you are on the beautiful brick-themed modern campus include the Botanical Garden, the Asian Garden, and the McMillan Greenhouse (which is full of orchids and other tropicals). The botanical garden features spring wild flowers, rhododendrons, and azaleas as well as magnolias and is a must in the spring. Spring arrives early and lasts a while in Charlotte. It is worth a visit, if only to escape the last vestiges of a Midwest winter. And unlike some cities, their state legislature has not banned light rail. to the double feature his ticket sales grew by 30 percent. The Vogue was one of the first movie theatres to have air-conditioning. The June 18, 1938 Indianapolis News reported that “Air-conditioning in the Vogue will be by watercooled air. The water used in the plant is drawn from deep wells. The washed and cooled air reaches the auditorium through air-ducts, all of which are soundproof. The ducts are equipped with deflectors to prevent drafts.” The Men’s and Women’s lounges were elegant and sophisticated. The newspaper description has “Inside, the Vogue furnishings and architecture continue the modernistic motif with tubular divans in cream and black upholstery. The women’s lounge has a color scheme of ivory and orange and is carpeted with a futuristic rug pattern. The men’s smoking room, decorated in Roman buff, also is furnished with modernistic appointments.” The projection booth had two arc-lamp projectors and a bench for rewinding films. While the projection booth has since been converted into the general offices for the Vogue Nightclub, the original medicine cabinet on its restroom wall still remains. Another new idea at the Vogue was a free 400car parking lot. In the upper right corner of the parking lot picture you can see two houses on Broad Ripple Avenue, where Huntington Bank is now.

In the late 1930’s and 40’s the Vogue was one of the premier movie houses in the Midwest. Due to its size and popularity, for a time, a second box office was added at the rear. The Vogue also showed matinees for kids. For parents of matinee attenders, there was a clock system. Two clocks hung in the box office window: one for the time of the next showing, and the other for the time when the kids should be picked up. In my history research I discovered that some naughty children used this system for other purposes by noting the time of the second clock on their way in to the theater, continuing through the theater and out the back door. Unsupervised mayhem ensued throughout Broad Ripple, and by returning at the time of the second clock, no one was the wiser. The Vogue was remodeled in 1948 when light-up letters spelling Vogue above a larger marquee were added. Carl Niesse sold the Vogue in October 1954. He died in January 1960 at the age of 63. When the sample bottle of wine infused with coffee arrived, I thought, oh puhleeze. When the snow started to fall and kept falling on March 24th, I thought, oh puh-leeze. Sunshine and great dog walking days to 10 inches of snowman snow in 24 hours. Maybe we DO need wine with caffeine if for no other reason than as an energetic boost to shovel that spring snow. I’m a fan of the Apothic brand. The red blends are some of the best values on the shelf. Winemaker Deb Juergenson isn’t afraid to try new methods either. Apothic Inferno is aged in whiskey barrels. But why add cold brew coffee? Turns out Juergenson is a fan of the chilly pick me up. She’s not alone. Bloomberg News reports sales of cold brew coffee grew 80% in 2017. Juergenson got hot for the cool drink when she realized the technique and flavors were similar to blending and aging wine. Cold brew uses more grounds which means a longer steep but a smoother finish. Cold temps further reduce the bitterness and enhance the silky mouthfeel. What’s left is more delicate mocha notes which complement the dark red fruit notes of the wine blend. Apothic Brew is dry so don’t think it’s a dessert wine. The rule of thumb for pairing wine and dessert remains the same, your wine needs to be sweeter than dessert. The chocolate, blackberry, notes of the wine would be better served with savory foods–perhaps chipotle sauced ribs, or coffee rubbed brisket. Apothic Brew is a limited release. Lets hope the spring snow is too. In the meantime, remember it’s 5 pm or 5 am somewhere.... Jill A. Easter Traditions Whether you celebrate Easter in the truest sense of the holiday or you just dig chocolate bunnies and jelly beans, most of us gather with friends and family for a celebratory meal. Easter marks the end of winter and calls for a fresher menu than feasts in the coldest months. I’m personally celebrating in Paris this year (look for some great new recipes next month!) but I’ll outline a menu that is simple and delicious: Asparagus Salad, Mustard Roasted Ham & a cute, holidaythemed cake hack.

Asparagus Salad with Walnuts 2 pounds fresh asparagus, trimmed of tough ends ¾ cup toasted walnuts 2 green onions, chopped ¼ cup olive oil 2 tablespoons tarragon vinegar 3 ounces fresh goat cheese Salt & pepper, to taste

Directions: Steam the fresh asparagus over boiling water just until tender (3-4 minutes). Remove from heat and allow to cool before chopping each stalk into thirds. In a large bowl, add olive oil, tarragon vinegar and whisk to combine. Season with salt and pepper. Add the chopped asparagus and toasted walnuts and toss gently to coat. Add the crumbled goat cheese and serve.

Mustard Roasted Ham 10-12# skinless smoked ham (shank-less) ¾ cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed ¼ cup prepared mustard (I like whole grain) 1 teaspoon allspice 2 tablespoons cider vinegar Directions: Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Place ham on a rack in a roasting pan (loosely covered with aluminum foil). Roast the ham for 1 ½ hours. In a bowl, combine the brown sugar, prepared mustard, allspice and vinegar. Whisk to combine and use this mixture to evenly “glaze” your ham. After applying the glaze, pitch the aluminum foil and bake, uncovered, for another 30-35 minutes. Remove from oven and let the ham stand for 15 minutes before carving.

Pretty Jelly Bean Cake (Hack!) If you like, make your own white layer cake with white frosting. Make sure there are no other decorations. I prefer to purchase one for this purpose, but either way, it will be darling and tasty. Directions: Place your frosted cake on a pretty plate and COVER (the top only) with colorful jelly beans. Don’t spread them out, pile them on so that they are all touching. That’s it. For those of you who are even more ambitious, here are a few other ideas: Set out a large tray of deviled eggs as an appetizer and perhaps a dish of scalloped potatoes to accompany the ham. If you want to take your Easter game to the next level, consider making a center piece for your table out of colorful plastic eggs and a few chocolate bunnies.
