To commemorate Vogue Nightclub’s 40th anniversary as a live music venue, the Gazette is bringing back its Vogue Theater history feature. This three-part piece appeared back in 2004, when the Gazette was an 8-page paper.

The Vogue Theater A Historic Look Back - Part 3 by Alan Hague

Recap: In parts one and two, Carl Neisse opens the Vogue in 1938. It was one of the first air-conditioned theaters. The last movies I remember seeing at the Vogue were Tora, Tora, Tora and House of Dark Shadows in 1970 (I was 10 at the time). In the early 1970’s, the Vogue changed from a premiere first-run movie house to a firstrun X-rated movie theater, featuring such classics as Deep Throat and A Touch of Sex (I did not see those!). In 1977, John Ross and Doug Turnbull purchased the Vogue. To announce the new ownership, the marquee displayed a take-off on the recent The Vogue Theater is now “PORN FREE”. (1977) film Born Free. They invested $500,000 in the old theater and remodeled it, putting in tiered seating, oak floors, a balcony, a larger stage, and three full service bars. On New Year’s Eve 1977, the club opened to a sold out show with a band named Coal Kitchen. The Vogue featured many local and national bands in the coming years. John and Doug ran the Vogue until May of 1986, when they sold it to Steve Ross and Dennis Burris. Steve and Dennis invested $250,000 in changing the club’s interior appearance. They reconfigured the front bar area, added a deli, added the center dance floor bar, installed 100,000 watts of lighting and sound systems, quadrupled the size of the dance floor, and painted the entire club. The Vogue Nightclub presents all types of entertainment, including full production plays, musicals, talent shows, band contests, charity benefits,

March BRVA Land Use Meeting - no votes needed By Alan Hague

alan@broadripplegazette.com There were approximately 20 in attendance at the March 27 public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) Land Use and Development Committee. The meetings are currently held at Northminster Presbyterian Church, 1660 Kessler Boulevard, in the basement, starting at 6pm. There were two items on the agenda (in bold below): 1. 6142 Broadway, Jeff Eshowsky with American Construction Company regarding the removal of the present garage at this location and replacing it with a carriage house, on the same footprint, with a bathroom and kitchenette on the second level. (6:05-6:25) This item needed no zoning variances and was therefore at the meeting for information only. No vote was needed by the committee. The project is to replace an existing 24’ x 24’ garage with a 24’ x 24’ two-story carriage house. The carriage house will be used for a home office and crafting space. It is similar to other carriage houses in the area. 2. 1428 & 1430 Broad Ripple Avenue, Joe Zinkan, Developer, David Toth, Architect, Shuan Langhorne, General Contractor for an update on the changes to the elevations for this development. (6:25-6:45) This project has been before the board several times. It is to build a retail/ apartment building on the space between Weaver’s Lawn and Garden and Broad Ripple Park, along Broad Ripple Avenue. The last plan was approved by the Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD). This presentation was to show some of the proposed building materials and to show the design changes planned. The height and building layout was changed. The height was 63’ and is now 53’. The number of units went from 38 to 36. There will be 68 parking spots and 6200 sq. ft. of retail space on the first floor. The project is hoping to break ground in mid June. The next public meeting of the Land Use and Development committee is planned for Tuesday, April 24 at Northminster Presbyterian Church starting at 6 pm.

On March 31st Plump’s Last Shot held their 1st annual Easter egg hunt in the Bill Brink Memorial Garden. The Rusty Nail Society sponsored the event and provided free hot dogs, the eggs, stuffed animals, and the Easter Bunny himself, to pose for free pictures with the kids young and old. Much thanks to Dora Riley and the regulars at Alibi’s (too many to mention here) for donating all of the candy. Carly and Mandy, owners of Just Pop In, for the popcorn and “Breadman Jack”, with Klosterman Baking Co. for the buns. Indiana basketball legend Bobby Plump (seated below) was on hand to greet the kids. Everyone had a great time.

Marion County Implements 311 Non-Emergency Line for Cell Phones

In a continued effort to save lives and protect citizens, Marion County Sheriff John R. Layton, joined with IMPD Chief Bryan Roach, Speedway Police Chief Jim Campbell, Lawrence Police Chief David Hofmann, and Beech Grove Police Chief Mark Swartz, as he announced the implementation of 311 in Marion County. 311 is now available to cell phone users needing non-emergency law enforcement assistance. The non-emergency line for landline phones remains as 317-327-3811. Marion County is the first county in the state to implement 311 for cell phone users, and joins Baltimore, Chicago, Las Vegas and New Orleans in the implementation of 311 for non-emergencies. Approximately 60% of calls made to the Marion County Sheriff’s 911 Center are not true emergencies. Non-emergency calls made to 911 can impede emergency services for those facing life or death emergencies. The creation of the 311 number will allow citizens the ease of directly contacting 911 without tying up an emergency 911 dispatcher. The following are examples of non-emergency phone calls that should be directed to 311 or 317-327-3811: Lost or stolen property, Noise complaints, loud music, loud parties, barking dogs, Fraud reports, identity theft reports, Requests for vehicle inspection checks, Any report being made for insurance purposes, Any incident involving a time delay that has an effect on the situation such as a delayed burglary report, delayed theft reports, delayed motor vehicle accident, Any other reason a citizen may need to speak with a dispatcher that does not constitute a life or death emergency.

I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

North District Officer of the Month Congratulations to late shift officer David Loyal for receiving North District Officer of the Month for February 2018. Special thank you to our sponsors American Legion Post 3 (Broad Ripple Post), Indiana State Fair, and Steven R Jenkins Company. Please take a few moments and read the recommendation for Officer Loyal. North District Officer of the Month - February 2018 - Officer David Loyal On 02/25/2018, Officer David Loyal responded to a loud music call at 2006 W. 76th St. at The Viewpointe at Westland Apartments. Officer Loyal and assisting officers responded to the address and attempted to make contact with the occupants of the apartment. David could hear loud music and talking consistent with a party while standing outside. Loyal had to knock several times to get the occupants to answer. He then heard the music go off and movement inside. After some time, one of the subjects inside opened the door and officers were met with the overwhelming odor of marijuana and saw ammunition and drugs in open view. The officers observed at least 9 people and ordered them out detaining them in the living room. North District narcotics were called to the scene. A search warrant was requested and granted with the following items located: 5 pounds of marijuana, 1 pound of marijuana edibles, 3 ounces of Marijuana butter/wax, Glock 21 - .45 caliber handgun, AK-47 Rifle - 7.62 caliber, High capacity magazine for AK-47, Various rounds of ammunition, and $1,215.00 cash seized Great work by all involved, especially Officer Loyal.

No outdoor pool at revamped Park? At the IndyParks April 4 master planning meeting for revamping Broad Ripple Park, a Parks representative told me the current outdoor pool is too old to be repaired (none of the proposed park layouts showed an outdoor pool*). It was also announced formally that IndyParks is looking for strategic partners to run/construct recreation facilities at BR Park, including YMCAs and hospitals. Upcoming meetings include May 2 and May 23 at Broad Ripple High School. Three “concepts” are being considered: 1. Developing “pockets” including a recreation center. 2. Urbanized edge including a marina. 3. Naturalized engagement featuring a nature center and more trails. Ideas include new splash parks, cafes, moving the Farmers’ Market to the Park, and moving the boat ramp. To find out more, you can stop by the Project Studio at the Family Center in Broad Ripple Park or go to www.broadrippleparkmasterplan.com. Unlike the Library which is moving the Glendale location to a new building without any public input process, thanks to IndyParks for this informative, transparent, and open dialogue.

*Editor’s note: Kathy Fitzgerald, BR Park Manager, asked Dominic L. Cornett, Senior Manager of Community Partnerships, Department of Parks and Recreation/Indy Parks to add some clarification to the disappearance of an outdoor pool in the mock ups at the last open house at BRHS: “Currently, Broad Ripple Park is undergoing a master planning process that will result in development guidelines and park recommendations for enhancements over the next 20-30 years. Working with the community, the design team is exploring a variety of aquatic experience opportunities with an eye toward more financial sustainability and an extended operating season. On April 4, three design concepts for Broad Ripple Park were presented for feedback. All concepts included a potential outdoor aquatics experience. Likewise, all three concepts included the potential for indoor aquatics within the recreation facility, or the preservation of real estate to expand the building in the future to accommodate such a need. The current pool facility will open on May 26th.” ***Updates to the planning process can be viewed at www. broadrippleparkmasterplan.com. The next public meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 2nd at 6:00pm in the cafeteria of Broad Ripple High School.

Steve owns it today. Nelson. The Vogue has won many awards, such as “Best in Indy” from the Indianapolis Monthly Magazine and NUVO Reader Polls and Indianapolis Star critic’s picks. It is part of a family of nightclubs, comprised of the Vogue and the Patio in Indianapolis, and the Bluebird and Axis in Bloomington*. Sold-out performances and long lines at the Vogue box office are regular sights on College Avenue. There is an important part of the Vogue that I have not yet touched upon - the autographed star. The star has quite a history, some that is known and some that is still a mystery. The part that is known: Carl Niesse placed a large bronze star in the sidewalk in front of the box office. Carole Lombard and her boyfriend, Clark Gable, signed the star. Twenty-six other movie stars, all with Hoosier connections, also added their autographs: Irene Dunne, Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Marjorie Weaver, Dick Powell, Myrna Loy, Don Ameche, John Barrymore, Tyrone Power, Ken Maynard, Ginger Rogers, William Powell, Barbara Stanwyck, George Raft, Bing Crosby, Monte Blue, Joan Blondell, Shirley Temple, Alice Faye, Loretta Young, Bob Burns, Claudette Colbert, Francis Dee, Sonja Henie, Richard Dix, and Bobby Breen.

The part that is still somewhat a mystery: It is believed that Niesse took the star with him when he sold the theater in 1954. It hung in a local bar for a time. In 1994 it was “rediscovered” when a local TV reporter did a story on an eastside woman with a star. Ross and Burris heard about the story, made a bid for the star and were able to reacquire it, partially because they were going to return it to its original home in the sidewalk. They repaired the star and sank it back into the sidewalk under the marquee and celebrated with an unveiling ceremony.

courtesy of The Vogue

Steve Ross posing by the newly replaced bronze star in front of the theater.

The Vogue is even a landmark from the alley side with this familiar painted sign that has adorned the rear for decades. (Image from 2003)

The star can still be seen there today, and is a reminder of Broad Ripple’s connection to the Hollywood of the 1930’s. Recently Steve Ross had the concrete surrounding the star replaced, as it had become chipped and damaged by the weather. Perhaps a reader of the Gazette can fill in some details on the history of the star and its disappearance for many years, although the important thing is that it is home again and being preserved.

The Vogue has survived longer than any other business in Broad Ripple** due to the hard work of its many owners over the years to adapt it to the current generation. It stands as a Broad Ripple landmark and a piece of architectural history. If someone gives directions for a location in Broad Ripple, chances are the Vogue is included in the description. * This article was written in 2004. ** Kroger started around 1930, Steve Ross is the current owner of the Vogue Nightclub. but has been at more than one (Image from 2003) address. courtesy of The Vogue

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 8 in the left section of the middle row that contains 1-2-4-5-6-7. The 8 in the right section of the middle row eliminates the space between the 2-5. The 8 in the center section eliminates the space between the 4-6. The only place left is directly to the left of the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Make Wine Not War WineAmerica (www.wineamerica.org) is a Washington D.C. based group that keeps a keen eye on laws, policies and procedures that affect the US wine industry. Jim Trezise is president. I’ve known him for 20 years when he was transforming the New York Wine industry by successfully bringing together growers, workers, consumers and politicians. Its weekly e-newsletter is important information for anyone who cares about wine. Winemaking is farming and chemistry. When US trade policies change that means wineries take a hit too. California is most threatened but a number of Indiana wineries export their product overseas. Information in last week’s newsletter is worth knowing. “It’s official: Since last week, in response to U.S. tariffs imposed on certain Chinese products, China has turned its threat into a reality with retaliatory tariffs on 128 American products, including a 15% hike on wine. On top of the already imposed 14% tariff, that now adds up to 29%–compared with Australia and Chile which pay 0% due to their own trade agreements with China. We can’t compete with that. Then this week the President threatened to hold hostage the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with Canada and Mexico until the latter provided more border security for the U.S. This is serious stuff. Canada is #1, China #4, and Mexico #6 in terms of countries importing American wines, totaling about $545 million in revenues to American wineries in 2017. In terms of volume, they total 111 million liters or about 12 million cases. Lots of time, effort and money are required to build an export market but a trade war can make it collapse overnight. California is clearly affected most directly and severely making up 90% of total US wine production and 97% of American wine exports. But the potential ripple effect of lost sales will extend across the country. All that surplus wine can’t be sold in California.” That surplus could mean short term good news for consumers as producers drop prices to sell off wine meant for export. But wineries will have to make up for that financial loss, and guess who will pay for that? Finding your favorite US wine on the store shelf could become trickier too as distributors fight for space to keep their product in the public eye. The Prophecy label offers wines made from both domestic and imported wine grapes. The Red Blend comes from Washington and California. It’s a rustic, brooding, blend with lingering flavors of dark cherry and plum. The 2015 could be decanted it’s that intense. Prophecy wines are already widely available and a good value. Enjoy them with an open mind. Jill A. Right in my Own B a c k y a r d by Brandt Carter “….The Best of Life is Mine” At Broad Ripple by James Whitcomb Riley Ah, Luxury! Beyond the heat And dust of town, with dangling feet, Astride the rock below the dam, In the cool shadows where the calm Rests on the stream again, and all Is silent save the waterfall, bait my hook and cast my line, And feel the best of life is mine. No high ambition may I claim angle not for lordly game Of trout, or bass, or wary bream black perch reaches the extreme Of my desires; and “goggle-eyes” Are not a thing that I despise; A sunfish, or a “chub,” or “cat” A “silver-side” - yea, even that!

In eloquent tranquility The waters lisp and talk to me. Sometimes, far out, the surface breaks, As some proud bass an instant shakes His glittering armor in the sun, And romping ripples, one by one, Come dallying across the space Where undulates my smiling face.

The Gazette was invited to the annual Meridian Street Foundation Easter Egg hunt at the home of Dr. and Mrs. John Klein, which is the old Governor’s mansion at 4343 N. Meridian Street. It was a very windy day.

Riley wrote these words over 100 years ago about our village.

Forever sweet to ear and eye, Forever tenderly begun Forever new and never done. Thus lulled and sheltered in a shade Where never feverish cares invade, I bait my hook and cast my line, And feel the best of life is mine.
