Renaissance Kids - taking kids beyond the classroom By Mario Morone
mario@broadripplegazette.com
INDEX
Elementary School Educators Diamond Malone and Sylvia Denice go beyond the classroom in educating children with Renaissance Kids, Inc. Ms. Denice recently described their endeavor. “We are a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that started in May of 2017. We have a cohort of five Renaissance Kids who started with us in October. The Renaissance Kids and their families participate in activities to support their social, emotional, academic, and cultural well-being through our programming. I am the vice chairman and my colleague, Diamond Malone, who is also a teacher, cofounded Renaissance Kids, Inc. together. We are not affiliated with the Crooked Creek Elementary School where our members come from. We do not yet have a facility, but are hosted by Crooked Creek Elementary School on Michigan and Kessler here in Indianapolis,” she explained. “We are teachers who own and run a nonprofit organization facilitating activities encouraging Indianapolis children to reach their fullest potential. The events happen after school hours and on the weekends. It is open to all Indianapolis kids, but acceptance into the program involves an application and interview process. Our ultimate goal is to have a rolling application process with periodic interview dates for acceptance of new families into the program,” she added. Ms. Denice explained how they decided to start Renaissance Kids Inc. “Diamond felt there were resources lacking where she couldn’t meet the needs of students during the school day during her first year of teaching. We met when we got placed on the same team of teachers instructing fourth graders. She thought I would be a good fit for this program. There was a project she was working on in graduate school during one part of spring break last year as we spent time putting the program together. We are both from Indiana. I am from Fort Wayne and went to Marion College Indianapolis and ending up teaching after I graduated.” She reflected on the rewards of teaching. “I would say that the most rewarding thing about teaching is that I get to keep learning from the kids I educate. They teach me more than what I teach them.” Enrollment information is available at: www.renkidsindy.org/apply. “There is a yearly donation fee of $50.00 for one child, $75.00 for two children, $100 for three children, or $125 for four or more children requested when entering the program. This donation is used to purchase supplies, snacks/meals, play equipment, games, fund program activities, etc. The fee is due at the time of agreement to participate in Renaissance Kids, Inc. We never want finances to be a deterrent for a family who we feel is a good fit for the program; so, if there are any barriers there, families donate their time to the organization in place of the fee,” she described. Ms. Denice mentioned some of their recent activities. “We have launched our eXposure programming, which includes monthly field trips for our Renaissance Kids. So far, they have participated in seeing a musical production at North Central High School and visiting Lights at the Brickyard in Speedway. We have also launched Family Time, which encourages our Renaissance Families to participate in activities with all members of their family units. They have participated in a Family Math Night and a family bowling event, and we will be having a family photo session this month. Our next undertaking is our mentoring program, where each Renaissance Kid will be paired with a mentor, a professional in the Indianapolis community.”

BRVA public meeting shows possible new trail By Alan Hague
alan@broadripplegazette.com Attendance was close to 100 at the April public meeting of the Broad Ripple Village Association (BRVA). The meeting was held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. BRVA president Joshua John ran the meeting. A major item discussed was the possibility of two large grants that could allow for an expansion of the proposed Riverwalk project (Riverwalk story, connecting BR Park to Monon Trail, in next BR Gazette). One proposal is to build a pedestrian bridge across the White River at 64th Street (where the car bridge was a long time ago) connection the trail to Marott Park. Kent Springer, past BRVA president, spoke about the reuse of the BRHS building. He said that both Purdue University and Herron High School are interested in opening additional schools and want them to be in Broad Ripple. Bryan Luellen of IndyGo gave an update on the Red Line. He said federal funds could be coming very soon and would allow for construction to begin 30 days later. The part of the Red Line that will be on College Avenue will be the last part to be constructed. Newly-hired BRVA executive director Colleen Fanning talked about all of the things the BRVA does as an advocate of the Village. Door prizes from Half Baked Pottery, Dr. Eve Earley, and Petite Chou were given to drawing winners. Food and drink was provided by Average Joes and Broad Ripple Brewpub. The next public meeting will be in October and will include the election of BRVA board members.

57th Decorators’ Show House funds to support nursing care at Eskenazi Health
This year’s St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Decorators’ Show House and Gardens will once again allow the public to tour a classic Butler-Tarkington home with proceeds benefiting Eskenazi Health. This year’s residence is located at 4140 N. Illinois St. at the historic Wainwright-Cochran House. Proceeds from the show house will benefit nursing at Eskenazi Health. The annual event runs from April 28 - May 13 (closed Mondays). Daily tours are open to the public from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online at www.showhouseindy. org for $20. At the door, guests 65 and older can purchase tickets for $18 and children 3 to 12 for $5. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased at select Meijer stores for $18 through April 27. Special group rates are also available. In addition to the daily tours, there are many special events to enjoy. Free parking is available on nearby city streets. “As has been the tradition, each spring local interior designers, landscape designers, and their support teams donate hundreds of hours, as do the members of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, to refurbish an area home and its surrounding property,” said Aly Schroeder, director of promotions for the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Decorator’’ Show House and Gardens. “We are excited to share the Wainwright-Cochran House with everyone this year, featuring classic design elements combined with the latest trends.” Interior designers and landscapers have been hard at work since February restoring and renovating the historic house. The Tudor Revival residence was built in 1925 by Guy and Jeanette Wainwright. At the time the recently-wed couple built their new home, Guy Wainwright was vice president and general manager of the Diamond Chain Company. He went on to become president of the company in 1931 and chairman of the board in 1955. The house was later purchased by Richard and Jessie Cochran. It is now owned by her son and his wife Donald and Clare Acheson. For more than 110 years the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has been a key partner in carrying out Eskenazi Health’s mission. From its beginning in 1907, the guild has raised more than $13 million

to support the work of Eskenazi Health. This generous philanthropic support has benefited Eskenazi Health patients directly through programs and services. The dedicated members of the guild work tirelessly and enthusiastically through the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens and many other initiatives for the benefit of Eskenazi Health’s patients and its mission. “Many things have been made possible at Eskenazi Health solely because of the generosity and commitment of St. Margaret’s and their extraordinary show house successes,” said Dr. Lisa Harris, CEO at Eskenazi Health. “There is really no area of Eskenazi Health that St. Margaret’s hasn’t touched. We are forever grateful to the women of St. Margaret’s and those who support them for their determination, their advocacy, their enduring friendship and their devotion to Eskenazi Health.” St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has distributed funds to numerous areas of Eskenazi Health, including the Sandra Eskenazi Center for Brain Care Innovation, Women’s and Children’s Services and the Newborn Intensive Care Unit. The guild was also a key supporter and a strong voice for the construction of the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital and Eskenazi Health campus. This year, the guild is raising proceeds to benefit nursing at Eskenazi Health. “We are extremely grateful to St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and the commitment they have shown to our community,” said Ernest Vargo II, CFRE, president and CEO of the Eskenazi Health Foundation. “Eskenazi Health, and what we are able to offer our patients and their families, undoubtedly benefits from the generous philanthropic support and leadership of the women of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild.” This year’s show house marks the 57th time the guild has hosted the event, which will feature more than 50 area designers and landscapers using their talent and creativity to transform the historic Wainwright-Cochran House. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and is Assistant Band Director at BRHS. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Christos Koutsouras’ “Land Art” opening reception Friday, May 4 Tube Factory artspace 1125 Cruft St. all-ages, free, 6 – 10 pm,
Christos Koutsouras’ upcoming show at Tube Factory artspace is rooted in a place very special to him. The work in this show is inspired by the huge fire that tore apart his birthplace on the island of Samos, Greece. He first approached the theme in 1994 after a fire destroyed much of the vegetation on the island and again in 2016 when a rampant blaze took thousands of hectares of pine forest. When Samos was subjected to the massive fire two years ago, Christos saw it as an opportunity to finish the work he started 20 years ago. He envisions the white trees he has painted juxtaposed with the black landscape as a visual reference to the act of fire. Land Art is made up primarily of large scale photography manipulated by Christos in different ways. Some pieces are painted on, others drawn upon with pencil, and some left intact. The work captures the destruction and rebirth of the forests and fields of Samos from fires that swept through the landscape. In a second element to the exhibition, Christos paints the charred trees white to contrast with the blackness of the burned landscape. Other works were produced by wrapping paper around the burned trees of Samos and rubbing charcoal imprints. Christos is truly an international artist and I’m thrilled that he occasionally calls Indianapolis his home. The show will hang through July 14.

David Amram in concert Friday, May 11 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 College Ave. - 21+, two shows 6 & 9:30 pm, $36 – 46
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the Dan Wakefield and David Amram show last year. I could listen to them tell stories all day long and hearing David play music was icing on the cake. David Amram is such an interesting man and talented musician and has had more adventures than you can imagine. It took me almost a year to read his biography, Upbeat: Nine Lives of a Musical Cat. It is so dense with stories of musical accomplishments and iconic friends that I had to absorb it in chunks. Of course, the stories of hanging out with Dan and Jack Kerouac and Hunter Thompson are fun to read, but mostly I was blown away by David’s detailed memory, the book was a great peek into many behind the scenes moments in his illustrious life. David is a pioneer of Jazz French horn, has composed hundreds of works, and is a multi-instrumentalist. He’s a master of improvising and musical surprises and glee. Seriously, joy radiates from him. Dan Wakefield will also chatting with David for a special edition of Uncle Dan’s Story Hour at the Aristocrat on Thursday, May 10. For details on tickets for that event and The Jazz Kitchen shows and a special combo ticket, visit danwakefield.com. -Nora Not-for-profit director by day, music writer by night, Nora Spitznogle reviews music that happened and previews music and events around Broad Ripple Village. The art in Broad Ripple, when holistically appreciated, is an exquisite masterpiece. Thought and emotion are evoked, and consciousness is lifted. The people in the community weave a tapestry with soulful glances, handshakes, and hugs. We can never hope to be more or fret to be less than a member of a community. Your life is a masterpiece. Contemplate your life’s journey and you will be amazed by the views along the way. You are a masterpiece and a master artist. After all, you were created in the image of the ultimate artist.

Let IndyParks know you want an outdoor pool If you read my last column (and IndyParks response) you may be confused. As a matter of fact, the current outdoor pool at Broad Ripple Park does not appear anywhere in the 3 versions of the draft Master Plan. This is because IndyParks says the pool is beyond repair. While they are considering a “splash park” and indoor pool in the scenarios, the fact remains that an outdoor pool is not apparently being considered. Period. To find out more, you can stop by the Project Studio at the Family Center or go to www.broadrippleparkmasterplan.com. Or go to the meetings May 2 and May 23. Editors note: As stated to me personally and in the previous issue of the BRG, IndyParks says that none of the plans are final at this stage. The plans indicate “aquatics” that could be many things. There are many pool configurations that could end up in the final plan. Art Walk and After Party Scheduled The BRVA Spring Art Walk on May 11 is coming up and the Indianapolis Art Center has scheduled an After Party. The Indianapolis Art Center will host a free community party from 8–9:30 pm after the Broad Ripple Village Association’s (BRVA) annual Spring Art Walk. The party will feature food and refreshments, and a music set curated and performed with accordion and guitar played over beats by DJ La Buena Onda, Gerardo Ruiz Tovar, from Indy’s popular band, Sweet Poison Victim. Beer & wine will also be available for purchase. Starting at 5 pm, BRVA Art Walk participants can pick up a map and brochure at the BRVA office located at 6323 Guilford Avenue. The map will lead walkers through different Broad Ripple destinations featuring art, entertainment and refreshments. Each destination will provide an opportunity

to get a “passport stamp” for a prize drawing taking place at 9 pm during the Indianapolis Art Center community party. Also coming up at the Art Center is the Broad Ripple Art Fair which runs on Saturday, May 19, 11 am to 7 pm & Sunday, May 20, 11 am to 6 pm. Tickets are available in person at the Indianapolis Art Center and online at www. IndplsArtCenter.org/BRAF. New Executive Director of BRVA outlines vision and priorities Colleen Fanning started April 1 as the new Executive Director of the Broad Ripple Village Association. I sat down with her on April 6 to learn more about the group’s priorities for the Village in the coming months and her vision for Broad Ripple. She said the group was focused on re-engaging members, both residential and business. Fanning noted the Village has a lot of big, amazing projects coming on line and she sees a resurgence in the Village: the Red Line bus rapid transit, the photo by Bill Malcolm proposed RiverWalk, and the Broad Ripple Avenue beautification project which will be transformative for the Village. The goal for Broad Ripple Avenue, for example, is create a mini Georgia Avenue by adding street trees, decorative lighting, expanding the sidewalk, making it revenue producing, and more. Regarding re-purposing of the soon to be closed Broad Ripple High School, BRVA is doing advocacy on the issue working with Indianapolis Public Schools. Upcoming April 30-May 12: Get your outdoor plants at the ISBVI, 75th and College May 2: BR Park Master Plan meeting, BRHS May 5: First outdoor farmers market, BRHS May 11: BR Art Walk and after party at Indianapolis Art Center May 19 and 20: BR Art Fair at Indianapolis Art Center May 23: BR Park Master Plan meeting, BRHS Bill Malcolm also writes a syndicated travel column and for All Aboard Indiana (both as hobbies). Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 5 in the right section of the top row that contains 3-7-8. The 5 in the right section of the bottom row eliminates the spaces below the 8. The 5 in the left section of th top row eliminates the spaces on both sides of the 8. The 5 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 7. The only place left is directly above the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

Since Mother Nature continues to be oh so fickle with the forecast, it’s a great time to drink a rosé wine. If the weather is warm, you serve it cold. If there is a chill in the air, drink at room temp. Rosé is a style of wine, which means it can created to be dry or sweet. The French have been making it for centuries but its a relatively new discovery for American winemakers. And the story behind it is worth telling again. In the 1970’s the California wine industry was just beginning to grow as was a red grape called Zinfandel. Zinfandel thrived in the wine country soil and was made into a bold, dry red wine. However, the 70’s wine drinking public wanted WHITE wine. So what could a California winemaker do with this fruity, spicy red grape to make it more palatable and profitable? The Gallo Brothers put it in a jug renamed it “Hearty Burgundy” and made a fortune. But the thirst for white wine was yet to be quenched. So at Sutter Home Winery, Winemaker Bob Trinchero turned a mistake into a milestone. He had a barrel of Zinfandel that experienced stuck fermentation which means the yeast died off before turning all of the sugar in the juice into alcohol. This left Bob with a batch of pink, sweet wine. What could have been a brush with disaster became the blush of success. Pink was closer to white than red and America’s natural proclivity to all things sweet made this combination a winner which we all now know as “White Zinfandel”. The French had been making rosé style wines for years with great success. But the crafty Americans decided to call it “blush” which to this day can still be a tip-off. When the label on a bottle of pink wine says “blush” more often than not it will lean to the sweeter style. Wine labeled “rosé” usually means the pink wine inside is a bit more dry. Most winemakers take one of two options when creating a barrel of pink wine: the rosé/blush method (like Trinchero) or the French style of rosé wine making called “saignee” (SAHN- YEE). Blush/Rosé style means the winemaker puts the crushed red grapes with skins and juice in a barrel, adds yeast that eats away the sugar in the juice upping the alcohol and lowering the sweetness. The winemaker decides how far to let that fermentation go and thus creates either a dry or sweet style of rosé/blush wine. The Saignee process has the winemaker putting full clusters of grapes into a barrel. No crushing. Just grapes. Yeast is added which starts the fermentation and the whole grapes naturally release juice. Sometimes this juice is also called “Free Run”. Winemakers consider this to be the best or freshest juice of the batch which makes it perfect for rosé wine. The winemaker wants the color and flavor of the red wine but not the bitterness or astringency which comes from longer contact of juice/ grape skins. French rosés can be pricier than the Americans but two widely available labels are both affordable and tasty. The Prophecy Rosé offers up dry, crisp aromas and flavors of wild strawberry, nectarine, current and white peach. The Fleur de Mer is a bit more full bodied, with a floral nose, and flavors of red current and raspberry. Jill A. The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining
by Elizabeth Morse
Winning Track Picnics! I know. It’s hard to believe that it is almost time to head out to the Speedway. Heck, it’s hard to believe that we may see warm days at all. They really are right around the corner. I’ve got a great menu that travels well and will allow you to successfully take your party on the road. These recipes are great to prepare a day in advance and stick in the fridge. Load them into your cooler the next morning and head to the IMS with your crew. These recipes will feed a group of 6-8 adults.
Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Carolina-Style Barbecue Sauce Pulled Pork 2 onions, quartered 3 tablespoons dark brown sugar 1 tablespoon paprika 1 tablespoon salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 6 pounds boneless pork butt 1 cup apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 2 teaspoons crushed red pepper 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Directions: Place the onions in a crock pot. Combine all remaining ingredients (except pork) in a small bowl. Rub this mixture all over the pork. Place pork on top of onion in crock pot and pour any remaining spice mix over the meat. Cook on low heat for 9 hours. Allow meat to cool enough to handle and remove from crock. Shred meat with fork. Be sure to remove onions and add to shredded meat. Add barbecue sauce to your liking and refrigerate in a sealed container. Carolina-Style Barbecue Sauce 1 Tablespoons Olive Oil 1/2 red onion, chopped 1 tablespoons minced garlic 1 tablespoons chili powder 2 cups yellow mustard 1 cups apple cider vinegar 1/2 cup ketchup 1/4 cup Worcestershire Sauce 1/2 cup honey 1/8 cup black pepper 1 tablespoon mustard seeds 1 tablespoon kosher salt 1/4 cup raw sugar (cane sugar) 1/2 cup water few dashes of hot sauce Directions: Brown the onions in olive oil. Add the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds. Add the chili powder and cook another 30 seconds. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to a simmer. Cook for 30 minutes and let cool. If you prefer a really smooth sauce, run it through your blender, but I prefer it as-is.
Cilantro-Jicama Slaw 1 large jicama, peeled and shredded 1/2 red cabbage, shredded 2 carrots, shredded 1/2 cup fresh lime juice 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons ancho chili powder 2 tablespoons honey 1/2 cup vegetable oil salt and pepper, to taste 1/4 cup fresh cilantro, finely chopped
Did You Know?
. . . that you can upload your photos of ANYTHING in the Broad Ripple area from ANY TIME to add to the VirtualBroadRipple Archives? Go to www.virtualbroadripple.com/submit.htm Directions: Place jicama, cabbage & carrots in a large non-reactive bowl (not metal). Whisk together lime juice, vinegar, ancho powder, honey and oil. Season with salt and pepper. Pour the dressing over the jicama mixture and toss well to coat. Fold in the cilantro. Refrigerate until ready to serve.
Beholdin’ Beans 6 1 1 1 3 2
slices bacon medium green bell pepper, minced medium yellow onion, minced can condensed tomato soup cans of french-style green beans (drain only 2) teaspoons sugar
Directions: In a large skillet, brown 6 slices of bacon. Remove bacon and drain on a paper towel. In the bacon grease, sauté the green pepper and onion until the onion begins to brown. Pour off as much of the bacon grease as you EASILY can, then add the canned green beans (remember, two cans are drained and one is not). Then add the tomato soup and sugar. Mix well and pour into a baking dish. Bake at 300 degrees for 2 hours. Top with your six strips of bacon, crumbled. Refrigerate until ready to serve. (Pro Tip: This is great hot or cold and is delicious with burgers, too!) To round out your menu, I’d be sure to take a great jar of dill pickles, a pan of your favorite brownies and a bag of potato chips. Oh, and don’t forget buns for your pulled pork sandwiches. Hawaiian rolls make an excellent choice.
