mario@broadripplegazette.com Broad Ripple resident Barbara Applegate-Jones described how she discovered a new artistic vocation. “I started painting just a little bit after the year 2000 when I retired from teaching. I paint still-life’s, landscapes and flowers. Some of my work is at the Stutz Business Center (1060 N. Capitol Avenue, Suite B-455), but most of it is at Palm Court Designs, located at 1134 E 54th Street, Suite K,” she mentioned. “I was an elementary school teacher, I had college students who trained with me, young women who were trying to decide whether they wanted to be school teachers or not when they were seniors and needed to have classroom experience. I started out in Cleveland, Ohio, then taught in Baltimore, Maryland and Columbus, Ohio, before starting my job here at Grandview Elementary School which is now called Sycamore. I also taught at Crooked Creek Elementary. I’m originally from Lakewood Ohio,” she explained. “I always loved art and I tried to sketch people. My dad was rather artistic, but he was a solider and later became a businessman. When I met Air Force Colonel

An American Legion emblem was dedicated at the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police North District headquarters (3120 E. 30th Street) on July 2nd, to provide a physical symbol of the ongoing support and appreciation Broad Ripple Post 3 (64th and College Avenue), the American Legion, provides the North District officers. The dedication was during the 1:30 pm roll call with all of the “midshift” officers present. Post 3 commander Roger Vandrey dedicated the emblem. North District Commander Joshua Barker accepted the emblem on behalf of the district officers, and Deputy Chief of Police Chad Knecht thanked Broad Ripple Post 3 for the excellent support of the officers. Commander Vandrey used elements of the Legion emblem to highlight some of the principles Legion members and police officers share: (1) The rays of the sun form the background of the emblem and suggest the Legion’s principles will dispel the darkness of violence and evil; (2) The wreath forms the center, in loving memory of those brave comrades who gave their lives in the service of the United States; (3) The star symbolizes honor, glory and constancy; (4) The smaller of two inner rings set upon the star represents service to our communities, states and nation; and (5) The smaller of two outer rings denotes the welfare of America’s children. Since January 2017, Post 3 has supported North District’s Officer of the Month program by presenting a gift card to the chosen officer and by post members being present at roll call to thank all of the officers for their service to our community. The command staff has reported the officers most appreciate the presence of the Legion members, and the personal thank you. IMPD’s North District is one of 6 districts that make up IMPD’s patrol area. North District is 80 square miles – for perspective, this is the same size as the city of Cincinnati, Ohio. While North District is not the largest patrol district in Indianapolis, it is by far the most densely and diversely populated with a population of approximately 220,000 residents. This district is home to Butler University, the Indiana State Fair Grounds, 2 major hospitals, over 30 miles of city trails and green space, and Indianapolis’ premier commercial and retail corridor. There are 211 police officers assigned to North District, providing 24-hour patrol coverage, investigations, narcotics investigations, and community relations. North District has some of the most affluent areas in Indianapolis; home to a number of professional sports players from the Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers and Indy Car Drivers. Like too many cities across the country, there are also neighborhoods touched by a disproportionate amount of violence and social disorder. Broad Ripple Post 3 is proud to be part of this neighborhood, and will continue to support and recognize our police force for the magnificent job they do.

from pg. 1

Gene Jones (who served 30 years in the Air Force), he had a horse farm in eastern Indiana. After he retired, he played golf and tennis, but I encouraged him to resume painting. He worked in a separate studio space at the Stutz Building, but later moved up the fourth floor and it became our studio. When we married, he had a real talent for painting and said, ‘When you’re not teaching, come down to the studio and I’ll teach you how to paint.’ That’s really where I started with colors and shapes. He would set up items like a basket of fruit, flowers and vases. We would paint on each other’s palettes. It was really a fun way to learn. He said, ‘You’ll never get it if you don’t visualize what a color chart is. He was very popular with the other artists there and told them epic stories about the war. One of his friends was local artist C.W. Mundy, who invited us to his studio a few times so we could observe his technique. We would paint there with him and he would comment on our work and instruct us,” Ms. Applegate-Jones noted. “Both my husband and I liked to travel. When we traveled to Cascais, Portugal, he took art materials that I thought he was going to use. We were on a street where he set up the easel and paints, then told me, ‘You’re going to paint this scene of a boat on the water.’ I did and later that day, somebody walked by and bought it. I painted a whole lot of things there and a lady bought some of them. I was so thrilled that I could sell them. He taught me how to stretch a canvas, frame, market and sell paintings. My husband and I also traveled to Italy and France and painted there as well,” she recalled. Painting has been very rewarding for her. “I just always feel very happy when I finish something and think I’ve done a good job, it’s something that I’m drawn to when I go to the studio, seeing my paints there and an item on the wall that I want to fix or start something new. It gets me excited. My husband fought in three wars and always loved art, but didn’t think it was appropriate for a solider. When we got married, I was still working and he was retired. He played tennis, golf, but when I saw some of his work, I wondered why he wasn’t painting. He opened a studio with local artists Jack Dickhaus who was well-known here in town and C.W. Mundy. They became good friends and painted together. The more he got into painting, he enjoyed it and wanted me to share in that. C.W. allowed me to watch him paint and taught a class. It was a very happy time, When I found out people could actually make some money painting that got me excited,” Ms. Applegate-Jones said. Artist talent is in her family’s genes. “My father was kind of an artist in that he could draw and arrange flowers. My daughter, Karen, who paints and draws, is an art teacher in Portland, Oregon. When she was a student at Broad Ripple High School, there was an art teacher there who encouraged her work. She won an award for a clay sculpture that she created. She graduated from the Pratt Institute in New York with Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. She moved to Florida and earned a master’s degree in teaching degree there before moving to the northwest.” The Stutz Business Center has been an ideal canvas for her creativity. “It has been wonderful working in this space. Turner Woodward has been very good to the artists and encourages them to pursue their work. I’ve made friends at Stutz that has turned into a very congenial group. Sometimes we have lunch together and watch each other paint.” Barbara Applegate-Jones is among many local artists whose work can be seen at the Stutz Business Center and at Palm Court Designs. She can be contacted at applegate-jones@att.net or at her studio number at (317) 403-6428.

Join Us To Talk About The Weather!

The safest, most neutral topic on the conversation menu has become infused with bewilderment and dread. Are weather and climate change more than we can afford to contemplate? The Indiana State Department of Education doesn’t think so. Beginning in 2016, the eighth-grade state curriculum standards include a mandate to teach the theory of climate change in the context of 100 years of data. Inspired by her students’ response to the new weather curriculum, Nica Solomon, middle school science and math at Hasten Hebrew Academy, is hosting an intergenerational education event for the public at Hasten Hebrew Academy. Because when it comes to the weather, we’re in it together. This event combines the screening of selections from the NOVA film Decoding the Weather Machine with a multi-disciplinary panel discussion and delicious snacks. Our middle school and high school student collaborators will lead climate-related activities for kids of all ages, so don’t leave them at home! We will convene at the Hasten Hebrew Academy at 6602 Hoover Road Indianapolis, IN 46260 on Sunday, July 29, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. To RSVP visit www.facebook.com/weathertogether18 or email weathertogether18@gmail.com. This presentation is a partnership of #sciencerising, Union of Concerned Scientists, the Citizens Climate Lobby, Earth Charter Indiana, Hoosier Environmental Council and NOVA Science.

by circumstance, and whose best hope is to simply work through all the hardship. Reading this turned Bella Simons – a 17-year-old student who has been hospitalized for multiple brain tumors and a stroke – into an instant fan. Bella wrote to tell Christina just how much the novel meant to her, and in response Christina sent her an advance copy of her next novel, Everywhere You Want to Be, with the handwritten inscription “Slay your demons”. The two have been writing to each other ever since. June and Simons (both Bella and her mother Tasha) teamed up to raise money for the Riley Children’s Foundation, the organization that supports Riley Children’s Hospital and the James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home, among other programs. Upland announces renovation plans for BR Tasting Room

Upland Brewing Co. announces renovation details for their Broad Ripple Tasting Room slated to start Monday, July 16th and tentatively looking to reopen to the public on Tuesday, July 24th. The renovation will create an open concept layout, expand draft & carryout beer selections and provide space for more event programming. The Broad Ripple Tasting Room opened its doors in November 2009 as Upland’s first location outside of Bloomington, Indiana. The tasting room has been known to locals as a charming dogfriendly spot to enjoy a pint alongside friends. The new space will maintain its original charm and dog-friendly nature with a more modern design and feel. The bar will be lengthened and reorientated in order to provide faster service as the draft lines increase from six to ten. Two of the new draft lines will be dedicated to Upland’s growing line of award-winning sour ales. The carryout selection will be expanded to offer the full lineup of Upland beers. The new open concept space will also enable expanded event programming including sour ale tastings and educational events. Customers can continue to look forward to new updates throughout the summer. The second phase of the renovations will be focused on the exterior of the building, including updated storefront glass with a new pick up window for carryout beer. An outdoor seating area will be created on College Ave and a new sign will be installed to improve visibility from the street and reflect the new internal renovations. Upland is thankful for the longtime support that the Broad Ripple community has shown since 2009 and looks forward to serving its members for years to come. This year marks the 20th anniversary of Upland Brewing Co, and these renovations highlight their commitment to creating a great experience for its customers for the next 20 years and beyond. I am a life-long resident of the Broad Ripple area. My family has been in Broad Ripple for many generations. Jacob Coil platted and named Broad Ripple in 1837. Two of his daughters married into my family in the 1870s. My grandfather was a mail carrier at the BR post office and a charter member of the American Legion Post #3. My grandmother Helen Dawson Hague worked at the Broad Ripple National Bank in Mustard Hall that became Fletcher Trust, then AFNB, then Bank One, and now Chase. My uncle Glen Hague worked at TV News and at Hoster-Roberts Ford, which is now Passwater’s and the Old Pro’s Table. My great-grandfather, grandmother, uncle, father, sister and son all graduated from BRHS; I am class of 1978. My son John is BRHS class of 2006, and was Assistant Band Director at BRHS, now band director at Crispus Attucks. As a board member of the BRHS Alumni Association, he is an organizer of the BRHS reunions for the classes of the 1940’s through the 1950’s held the first Sunday each June at Riviera Club. For many years, I have wanted a newspaper that answered my questions. Where did that store go? Why were those people digging on the corner? When is the BRHS Homecoming Parade? What happens at that business? The Gazette is that paper. You will get an unbiased look into what is happening in Broad Ripple because I have no financial interests in Broad Ripple, nor am I affiliated with any of its organizations. I am simply a resident who is passionate about the area. You will also read about the history of Broad Ripple. This history continues to expand as I uncover new sources of stories and photos. The Gazette’s area of coverage has no real boundaries. Historically, the town of Broad Ripple extended down to 54th Street. The goal of the Gazette is to share with readers stories that are within 10 minutes or so from the heart of Broad Ripple - covering events in the Midtown region. Also, Broad Ripple is one of the seven Cultural Districts recognized by the City of Indianapolis. We try to let you know what is going on in the other districts as we can. One question I often get is how an article gets into the Gazette. We do not accept payment for articles. Article subjects are picked by me for inclusion based on the interest to the residents and visitors to the Broad Ripple area. Since this is a bi-weekly paper, we will not be able to cover news as it happens. Rather, our focus is on issues that are not time sensitive. You will probably never see these stories anywhere else, so getting them a week or so later will be much better than not at all. We try to include a new/ recently opened business or long-time business feature article in each issue. I have hundreds of stories planned, but if there is something you want to read about, please let us know. I think you will enjoy the Gazette. I know I enjoy bringing it to you. -Alan Hague

Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam: Indiana Avenue Tribute Tuesday, July 31 The Jazz Kitchen 5377 N. College Avenue 21+, $25, doors 5:00, show 6:00

The Uncle Dan (writer Dan Wakefield) and Sophie (saxophonist Sophie Faught) Jams are a delightful mix of music interspersed with a panel discussion, or the other way around if you’d rather. Not only do they share the history of the person or era they’re covering, they tackle some hard-to-talk about social issues. As Dan has wrote on his blog, “When I was a boy growing up in Indianapolis in the 1940s I loved listening to ‘The Ink Spots’ on the radio. They were a pop vocal group who became internationally famous in the 1930s and 1940s, and in 1939 their hit song If I Didn’t Care sold nineteen million copies; in 1989 they were inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame. “I had no idea they were from Indianapolis. I had no idea that one of their original members, Jerry Daniels, once taught music at Crispus Attucks – nor did I realize the music department of that high school was as highly regarded as their Oscar Robertson team that twice won the state basketball championship. “I knew that guitarist Wes Montgomery and trombonist J.J. Johnson were from Indianapolis, though I didn’t know that they got their start on Indiana Avenue, nor did I know that Indiana Avenue had once been the seedbed and performance center of some of the great jazz musicians in this country – Indianapolis natives who were known throughout the world, though not by the white population of their hometown. Such are the fruits of segregation.” The Indiana Avenue edition of the Uncle Dan and Sophie Jam will cover music from the Avenue’s glory days and musician’s experiences around the Avenue. Performers and panelists include Carl Hines, piano player and band leader who played at clubs on Indiana Avenue in the last of its legendary days and drummer Kenny Phelps who was inspired by the Indiana Avenue tradition. Aleta Hodge, author of Indiana Avenue: Life and Musical Journey will be on hand to unlock the Avenue’s long-hidden history.

There are some great acts on the Chevrolet Free Stage and I love that several Indianapolis based bands are part of the line up. The Free Stage is in the northwest corner of the Fairgrounds, in front of the 4-H exhibit halls. Here are a few tips: There is limited bench and bleacher seating and you can bring a blanket sit on. You can purchase booze, beer, and wine at the bar next to the stage and there are acres of places to buy food on the Fairgrounds. There are great restrooms in the 4-H buildings. If you park at the Indiana School for the Deaf it is just a quick walk across 42nd Street to Free Stage. Every Free State show I’ve seen has been a blast! Fri., Aug. 3, 7:30:

On Sunday July 8th, Greg Humirchouser was out for a jog with his dog on the Monon Trail near Kessler at 62nd Avenue when a pit bull attacked his dog. I spoke with Greg who appreciated all the Good Samaritans that came to his help. Greg urges everyone to carry Mace on the trail. It can be purchased on line via Amazon or from Walmart. More Developments In The Effort To Save The Outdoor Pool

E

by B il l M

A local swim advocate and attorney encountered issues at the Broad Ripple Pool while trying to get signatures for a petition to keep the outdoor pool open. A guard came out and told him that he was not allowed to collect signatures in front of the pool and that he would have to leave. He also expressed his disappointment that neither BRVA nor Friends of Broad Ripple Park has come out against closing the outdoor pool. The Friends of Broad Ripple Park sent a letter on the Master Plan proposal to IndyParks which stated in part: “A lazy river has the same issues of staffing and liability as a lap pool and we urge further consideration as to which feature — a lap pool or a lazy river — better serves the public.” Friends President Tom McCain also stated: “Personally, I consider it a mis-characterization to call it a “plan to close the outdoor pool.” It is a master plan created during a monthslong process that was thorough and inclusive and received many more comments from the public than most such efforts.” Joshua John, President of the Broad Ripple Village Association, also responded: “We have not been absent. The BRVA had 3 representatives who took part in the Broad Ripple Park Master planning steering committee and also had representatives at each public meeting. Ultimately it is what Indy Parks determines is feasible. The cost of an outdoor public pool is substantial combined with an ever shortened season due to balanced school calendars reducing available summer days. It is not just the maintenance cost and upkeep associated with a deep water outdoor pool-the cost and availability of life guards is a consistently an issue each year for the park. I believe the park is exploring options to have a smaller outdoor lap pool as part of their last drawing/rendering of the master planning process. Along with the option to upgrade/improve the facility to include an indoor pool at some point in the future if it is economically feasible and a desired feature of the park. The current outdoor pool is past it’s useful life. Things deteriorate. So until the new facility is constructed, their only real option is to close the pool until that process plays out.” In other pool news, we checked in the rumor that the pool will close for good on August 5.

Jul 20 - Aug 2, 2018

In response, the Chief Communications Officer of IndyParks issued the following statement: “As part of our regular process to get outdoor pools ready for the summer season, Indy Parks evaluates the status of pools, needed maintenance, and available lifeguards/pool staff to prepare the season operating schedule. Broad Ripple Park’s pool will be included in the pool process for 2019. Currently, nothing has been confirmed to change this process for Broad Ripple and our remaining outdoor pools.” Closing permanently or not, the pool this year closes for the season on August 5 and also is closed every Monday. So get out and enjoy it while it lasts. And yes I oppose closing the pool. It is not past its useful life (the Jordan Y Pool is much older) but, as an Indy Masters pointed out at a recent hearing, it could be better managed (including hiring adult life guards, offering more classes, raising fees, and being open more hours).

Limes Too Tart For BR?

No sooner had the Lime Scooters appeared everywhere in the Village, the electric scooters disappeared. However, you can still find electric scooters downtown, albeit a different brand. Apparently new fees and regs from the City Council caused their abrupt departure.

Construction Begins Soon On New Apartment Complex

Several readers have asked about the two lots across from Public Greens and BRICS on Westfield Avenue. This is the old pool supply building which is scheduled to become The Line Apartments which is being built by JC Hart. Last week, the weedy lots were cleaned up. I spoke with Mark Juleen of JC Hart about the project. Due to complications in the design of the parking structure, the project was delayed a bit but they hope to close in financing this month at break ground at the end of the month. The complex will feature two separate buildings (with no bridge connecting them. Details can be found by Googling “The Line Apartments by JC Hart Indianapolis).

Joella’s Fried Chicken is coming to the Ripple.

Per Evan Sharf, they are looking at an early to mid-October grand opening of this chain from Atlanta which will locate in the former Applebee’s Restaurant on Broad Ripple Avenue.

Sudoku is a nine by nine grid. The solution (each puzzle has only one) will have all the numbers from one through nine in every row and every column. In addition, the grid is divided into nine three-by-three sections. Each of these three-by-three sections will also contain all the numbers from one through nine. Each Sudoku puzzle from Pappocom can be solved using logic alone. If you prefer guessing, you can – but there is a logical way to solve every puzzle. Let’s start with the easy puzzle. We will try to put a 1 in the left section of the top row that contains 3-7-8. The 1 in the middle section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the left of the 8. The 1 in the right section of the top row eliminates the spaces to the right of the 3. The 1 in the left section of the middle row eliminates the spaces above and below the 7. The only place left is to the left of the 7. You have learned one technique used to solve Sudoku puzzles. There are many more.

The Life of The Party Adventures in Entertaining

by Elizabeth Morse

Easy Summer Dips! I love entertaining casually in the summer. Whether it’s a porch party, friends on the patio after dinner or relaxing by the pool, an easy snack is a must. I’m sharing three unusual, but equally delicious dips for you to try. I’m wondering which will be the big hit, so drop me a line and let me know what you think.

Pineapple & Mango Fruit Salsa Serve with tortilla chips.

One whole pineapple, peeled, cored and diced 1 mango, peeled and chopped 1 red bell pepper, seeded and chopped 1 green jalapeno, seeded and minced (be sure to wear gloves working with hot peppers) ½ red onion, peeled and diced 1 11oz. can of mandarin oranges, drained 1 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped 1 tablespoon honey Juice of one lime 1 teaspoon salt

Random Ripplings

Bank America is coming to 2132 E. 62nd Street [HH31 on map] with a new fully-automated branch concept. This location was previously WingLicious.

Combine all ingredients in a non-reactive (not metal) bowl. Allow to chill at least an hour before serving.

Spicy Peanut Dip

Serve with raw veggies or pita chips. 2/3 cup creamy peanut butter 1 tablespoon brown sugar ¼ cup fresh lemon juice 2/3 cup spicy hot salsa ½ teaspoon ground cumin Salt to taste 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce A few dashes of Tabasco (to taste)

Combine ingredients in a non-reactive bowl and serve.

Tomato-Pesto Cream Cheese Dip

Serve with crackers or toasted baguette. 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 1 small (10.5 oz) package of fresh goat cheese, softened 1 teaspoon oregano (fresh, if possible) 2 cloves garlic, minced Salt and pepper to taste ½ cup sun dried tomatoes Small jar of basil pesto (6.3 oz)

Mix together the cream cheese, goat cheese, oregano, salt and pepper. Spread 1/3 this mixture into the bottom of a small, square dish lined with plastic wrap. Sprinkle the sun-dried tomatoes on top. Spread another 1/3 of the cream cheese mixture on top of the tomatoes. Spread the basil pesto on top and then spread the final layer of cream cheese mixture atop that. Chill for at least an hour. To serve, turn the dish upside-down on a serving platter and gently pull off the plastic wrap. This makes a very eye-catching appetizer.

Pro Tip!

If you’re interested in serving drinks with each of these, here’s what I’d offer: Pineapple & Mango Fruit Salsa - Mexican beer like Dos Equis or Sol Spicy Peanut Dip - Sparkling white wine like Prosecco Tomato-Pesto Cream Cheese Dip - Pinot Grigio if you like white wine and an easy-drinking Chianti if you like red wine. Cheers to Summer! Elizabeth Morse, owned the Corner Wine Bar in Broad Ripple for close to 20 years. Random Ripplings

Ezra’s Enlightened Cafe, 6516 Ferguson Street [C4 on map], was recently added as a Broad Ripple Gazette pick-up spot!

Random Ripplings Crab General opened recently at 921 Broad Ripple Avenue [H5 on map]. Crab General is a Japanese Shabu Shabu / Louisiana Seafood Boil restaurant. We don’t normally go into more detail with new restaurant Random Ripplings, but some of our readers may not be familiar with Shabu Shabu. While working for RCA, your editor made several trips to Japan and enjoyed this style of dining. It is a Japanese cook-atyour-table method that involves cooking vegetables and thinly sliced meat in a boiling pot of broth and then dipping in various sauces.
